Opis:
The article explores the ancient notion of ekphrasis in an attempt to redefine it and to adjust it to the requirements of the contemporary literary and artistic landscape. An overview of the transformations in the world of art in the 20th century allows us to adjust our understanding of what art is today and to examine its existence within the literary context. In light of the above, I postulate a broadening of the definition of ekphrasis so as to include not only painting and sculpture on the one side, and poetry on the other, but also to open it up to less conventional forms of artistic expression, and allow for its use in reference to prose. In order to illustrate its relevance to the novel, I have conducted a study of three contemporary novels – John Banville’s Athena, Kurt Vonnegut’s Bluebeard and Don DeLillo’s Mao II – in order to uncover the innovative ways in which novelists nowadays use ekphrasis to reinvigorate long prose.

The aim of the study was to determine whether the age of the audience of the exhibition influences the assessment of aesthetic preferences of artistic products made up by people with visual impairment. The research was conducted to give an answer if there are differences in the preferences of different categories of artworks created by artists who are blind or low vision. The research consisted in the evaluation of raised-line drawings, photographs, sculptures and the tactile picturebook. These artistic products were presented in the art gallery. The assessments were made on a 5-point scale, where the respondents indicated how much they liked the artworks they were watching. In the study participated 118 people, including 80 children and 38 adults. It turned out that age and type of art had an interactive impact on the aesthetic assessment. Age differences in aesthetic preference werefound in reference to drawings and picture books. The visual art created by people with sight impairment was evaluated very positively.

The article reports on the events held as part of the ‘Letter Festival’, which was intended as an interdisciplinary project targeted at the graphic artists and painters as well as linguistic and literary scholars, poetry being one of the areas explored. The numerous visual works shown at the art exhibition explore the sign material – letters, words and a visual representations of concepts – in a variety of ways. My analysis of these works focuses on semiotic aspects (the indexical, iconic, and symbolic function of signs) and several analogies to phenomena under intense research by modern literary scholarship (intersemiotic metaphors, identity of the subject, narrative structures, intertextual relations, ironical revaluations of meanings).

The position deserves attention, as it opens a discussion on the important phenomenon of visual culture history, which is currently widely discussed among many researchers. A historian, even if he is not an art historian, often analyses iconographic art in his work. After all, we are dealing with a different type of perception of the described reality, one which accumulates the ability to synthetically capture it using at the same time both the historian’s and film expert’s skills. Jacek Szymala sets himself an ambitious goal – to create a model, “a set of tools helpful in the future research of historians, especially modern historians, going beyond traditional historiography”. The author brilliantly shows that history is not only a collection of past facts and events but lives in its visual dimension, becoming a continuation of history itself. It is only important that, as far as possible, every viewer or reader can and should remain exactly as critical as in the process of interpretation of any historical source that “lies on the table” in the workshop of a good and reliable historian. The author is absolutely right when he writes that: “[...] these monuments, skulls, or paintings should serve as a warning and reflection, and not be the cause of mutual hatred, stereotyping, and prejudices”. Jacek Szymala’s book will definitely serve future researchers of this fascinating topic.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie istoty i możliwości wychowania przez sztukę dzieci w klasach I-III szkoły podstawowej na zajęciach plastycznych. Zaakcentowano konieczność podnoszenia poziomu kompetencji nauczycieli wczesnej edukacji wczesnoszkolnej w zakresie tworzenia dzieciom warunków do poznawania i bezpośredniego doświadczenia sztuki. Cel badań: Celem artykułu jest ukazanie wychowawczych walorów sztuki realizowanych w  toku edukacji plastycznej dziecka w klasach I-III szkoły podstawowej. Stan wiedzy: Rozbudzanie wrażliwości na piękno oraz kształcenie umiejętności wyrażania i odwzorowywania sztuki za pomocą różnych metod i technik ustanowiono jako pedagogiczne zadanie nauczyciela w zakresie edukacji plastycznej. Spotkanie ze sztuką stanowi jest podstawą procesu pozwalającego odkrywać jej wartości. Podsumowanie: W tekście podkreślono, iż wychowanie dziecka przez sztukę łączy się nie tylko z koniecznością stałego poszerzania wiedzy w tym zakresie, ale przede wszystkim z motywowaniem dziecięcej twórczości plastycznej.
The aim of the article is to indicate the essence and possibilities of educating through art children in grades 1-3 of primary school during visual art classes. In the study, the need to raise the level of competences of early childhood education teachers in terms of creating conditions for children to learn about and experience art directly has been emphasized. Aim of the research: The aim of the article is to show the educational values of art realized in the course of children's art education in grades 1-3 of primary school. State of knowledge: Raising a sensitivity to beauty and developing the ability to express and reproduce art using various methods and techniques was established as a pedagogical task of a teacher in the scope of visual arts education. The encounter with art is the basis of the process of discovering its values. Conclusion: The text emphasizes that raising a child through art is connected not only with the need to constantly expand knowledge in this area, but above all to motivate children's artistic creativity.

Sociologists traditionally focus on the power of socio-economic variables as drivers of aesthetic tastes and cultural practices, leaving other important factors outside the purview of analysis. As a remedy, this article makes use of recent progress at the intersection of the sociology of culture and network theory to show that individual interest in and preferences for art are also embedded in social relationships of a different kind. Data from a specially designed survey on personal networks and cultural tastes in Polish society is analyzed. Cultural taste is measured in detail by presenting respondents with ten color illustrations depicting different styles of visual art. These ten evaluations are then reduced to two significant dimensions (traditional vs. more modern art). The regressions analyses show distinct relations of network characteristics (such as heterogeneity, type of contacts, density, or associational membership) with the type of art preferred. The findings are interpreted in terms of social influence and affinity between cultural orientations (e.g., openness) and the manners in which social ties are developed and maintained. Additionally, the article sheds light on distinction patterns by arguing that status is claimed through specific (modern) preferences.

Artykuł prezentuje przegląd badań dotyczących indywidualnych uwarunkowań percepcji estetycznej. Wśród rożnych wymiarów osobowości najsilniejszym predyktorem okazuje się otwartość na doświadczenie, która pozytywnie koreluje z wrażliwością artystyczną w ogóle, a także jej nietradycyjnymi formami. Prezentowane badania wskazują również na systematyczne różnice pomiędzy doświadczeniem estetycznym ekspertów i laików. Szczególne znaczenie treningu estetycznego uwidocznia się w kontakcie ze sztuką współczesną. Ze względu na charakterystyczne właściwości sztuki współczesnej (niejednoznaczność, rekontekstualizacja czy wielowarstwowość) nadanie interpretacji dziełu – stanowiące element estetycznego przetwarzania – przypomina proces rozwiązywania problemów. W związku z tym można oczekiwać, że satysfakcjonujące doświadczenie estetyczne w kontakcie ze współczesną sztuką wizualną częściej będzie udziałem osób charakteryzujących się wysoką tolerancją wieloznaczności i wiedzą ekspercką.
The paper presents a study review on individual determinants of aesthetic perception. Among various personality traits, openness to experience appears to be the strongest predictor of art preferences in general, as well as the preference for non-traditional forms of art. The studies presented in the article show systematic differences between aesthetic experiences of experts and non-experts. This significant role of aesthetic training could be noticeably seen in relation to contemporary art. As a consequence of the characteristic features of contemporary art (such as ambiguity, recontextualization, layering) the interpretation of artwork, which is a part of aesthetic processing, resembles the problem solving process. Therefore, it could be expected that satisfactory aesthetic experience occurs more frequently in individuals with high ambiguity tolerance and expertise.

The article focuses on identifying differences in the locus of control and styles of coping with stress among young students who are artistically gifted within the fields of music and visual arts. The research group includes Polish students (n = 354) of both music and visual art schools who develop their artistic talents in schools placing particular emphasis on professional training of their artistic abilities and competences within the field of music or visual arts respectively. We make an assumption that different types of difficult situations experienced by youth educated at music and visual art schools may generate differences in dominating personal traits as well as in their sphere of emotions. The results of cross-sectional research in 2013 confirm the assumption regarding differences among music and visual art school students both with regard to the source of the locus of control, understood as the personality variable, and dominating styles of coping with stress. Moreover, a positive correlation between the tendency towards internal locus of control and a task-oriented style of coping with stress in difficult situations has been observed in music school students.

Natalia Malek undertakes a task of finding a possibility of translation between the languages of prosaic/poetic and visual arts, thus struggling to widen the spectrum of artistic expression. Her actions aim to intensify the form of the poem, which results in her leaning towards daring minimalism. Malek’s poems have gone a long way from life images with an ordered plot to concise linguistic images which strive towards deeper meanings and open up questions about identity and the art of poetry.

This paper aims to address and explore the problem of rendering Alasdair Gray’s prose in Polish, by focusing on his works’ extra-narrative elements. It seeks to identify the difficulties and limitations in translating an author of this kind – a writer, but also, and perhaps primarily, an artist, whose texts function as book-objects, relying heavily on artwork as well as typographical experimentation. The analysis, centred on Gray’s Lanark, 1982, Janine and Poor Things, leads to a discussion of the broader question of translating these books in which the actual text is only part of the story.

Opis:
Purpose of research. The purpose of the study is the analysis of the creation and functioning of art as a continuing process, a quality that is intrinsic to it. Art can be perceived visually as well as with other senses both in the process and through the material outcome. An attempt at its reinterpretation, illustrated with selected works of contemporary Polish and foreign artists, will be presented. Methodology. The dissonance between modern and traditional art lies, among other things, in the variety of, both, the techniques applied and the ways of conveying the message of the work. Art provides the artist with room for freedom which manifests itself in a free choice of artistic means: Teresa Murak celebrates the miracle of living by using natural materials; for Anna Goebel every material she uses tells its own unique story and so the artist considers it to be a medium of creating her own reality, whereas Yves Klein used to say that his paintings were only the ashes of his art, as what is most important is the experience and creation process, including the passage of time. Such a belief comes from the fact that everything art relates to, each creation as well as reception process – all this takes place in a context. Results. Today every sign of artistic activity - from painting, in the traditional sense of the concept, to the "action", experimental imprints of the human body, objects, plants, ephemeral art and spatial forms as environments, installation – can be considered a work of art. Art in process expresses not so much the temporary nature of the artwork formation, , as the necessity - essential for its existence - of being in a state of permanent execution by the author. Conclusions. In contemporary art, it is possible observe a re-evaluation of the stages that influence the creation of the artwork. Examples of art in the text show a different approach to the art in the process and the form and manner of use of the medium. They prove the lack of discrepancies between essence and existence of human and matter that takes on the form of the individual personality.
Cel badań. Celem pracy jest analiza kreacji i funkcjonowania sztuki, która jest w bezustannym procesie, co wynika między innymi z jej natury. Zarówno poprzez proces, jak i materię, może być odbierana wzrokowo, ale także za pomocą innych zmysłów. W artykule dokonano interpretacji na podstawie wybranych dzieł polskich i zagranicznych artystów. Metoda. Dysonans pomiędzy sztuką współczesną a dziełami sztuki dawnej leży między innymi w różnorodności zastosowanych technik i sposobów przekazywania wiadomości. Sztuka to obszar wolności artysty, który manifestuje się dowolnym wyborem środków wyrazu: Teresa Murak celebruje misterium życia, posługując się tworzywami pochodzenia naturalnego, każdy użyty przez Annę Goebel materiał opowiada własną, niepowtarzalną historię i jest traktowany jako medium do stworzenia własnej rzeczywistości, natomiast dla Yvesa Kleina malarstwo jest popiołem sztuki, gdyż najważniejsze są doświadczenie i sam proces tworzenia, wszystko bowiem, do czego sztuka się odnosi, każdy proces twórczy i proces odbioru dokonują się w jakimś kontekście. Wyniki. Dziś dziełem sztuki określa się każdy przejaw działalności artystycznej, począwszy od obrazu w pojęciu tradycyjnym, aż do sztuki „akcji”, eksperymentalnych odcisków ciała ludzkiego, przedmiotów, roślin, sztuki efemerycznej, instalacji i form przestrzennych, takich jak environments. Sztuka w procesie wyraża nie tyle czasowy charakter powstawania dzieła, ile zasadniczą dla jego istnienia konieczność znajdowania się w stanie permanentnego wykonywania przez autora. Wnioski. W sztuce współczesnej następuje przewartościowanie etapów wpływających na tworzenie działa. Przywołane w tekście przykłady ukazują odmienne podejście do sztuki w procesie oraz do formy i sposobu użycia medium. Dowodzą braku rozbieżności pomiędzy istotą i egzystencją człowieka, a materią, która przybiera formę osobowości jednostki.

Opis:
The article asks about the power of photography. Four photographs are referred to. The author tries to describe ways of looking, analyzing and interpreting each of them. Every time, it is a subjective analysis based on individual visual competences. The concept of punctum turns out to be important, as it allows a closer look at the visual. Ultimately, the answer to the question whether in the analysis of an image we take possession of it, or is it the other way around, is solved at the level of individual reception of a particular photo.
Artykuł traktuje o sile fotografii. Omówiono cztery fotografie, na któ-rych przykładzie autor próbuje opisać sposoby patrzenia, analizowa-nia i interpretowania. Każdorazowo jest to subiektywna analiza oparta na indywidualnych kompetencjach wizualnych. Pojęcie punctum oka-zuje się ważne, ponieważ pozwala przyjrzeć się temu, co wizual-ne. Ostatecznie odpowiedź na pytanie, czy w analizie panujemy nad obrazem, czy obraz nad nami, jest każdorazowo rozpatrywana przy indywidualnym odbiorze konkretnego zdjęcia.
