Opis:
A macroscopic analysis of experimental measurements offuel sprays penetration on evaporating conditions using the Laser Induced Fluorescence Planar technique is presented. A pure fuel and tracers have been used to determine the two-phase process of the spray by characterizing the wavelengths they display when excited by a laser beam. An experimental set-up based on a single cylinder engine [1, 2], an Nd:YAG laser, an image acquisition system and a system of injection common rail have been used to carry out the experimental processes. Experimental results show the behaviour of the vapour phase and liquid phase in the spray under different thermodynamic conditions and injection parameters in the combustion chamber, particularly the work-fluid density and the injection pressure were observed. The measurement of these parameters is of interest to design the combustion chamber geometry and the piston bowl features of modern direct injection Diesel engines. In particularly, the sschematic diagram and main components of the equipment, cross-sectional view of the cylinder head, experimental layout of PLIEF imaging tests and images, examples of the liquid phase and vapour phase penetration, maximum penetration of the liquid and vapour phase as function of the work fluid density, Maximum penetration of the phase as function of the work fluid density, maximum penetration of the liquid and vapour phase as function of the injection pressure are presented in the paper.

The number of vehicles in the world is growing rapidly. Therefore, the global consumption of crude oil is increasing and its natural resources are being depleted. It causes the rise of oil fuel cost. Constantly rising energy prices and emironmental concerns have made energy saving the highest priority for transportation operators. The main goal of vehicles' operation is economy. The fuel consumption of the most popular internal combustion engines depends on various factors, and one of the most important of them is thermal condition. Energy or fuel saving is the main way to reduce operational expenses of vehicles. This paper aims to investigate fuel consumption of 1.9 liter volume direct injection diesel engine and to construct a diagram of the dependence of the amount of smoke in exhaust on the temperature of engine's operation. The temperature was fixed in the engine's crankcase, while the temperature of cooling liquid was measured at four points as well as during the engine's bench testing. Unexpected test results are obtained: when the temperature of exhaust gases rises above 70-75 °C, the amount of smoke increases by a few times. Finally, basic conclusions and recommendations are given.

Those criteria have been divided into tribological, technical in detail and technical in general. The above criteria have been related to piston-con-rod system, in which, two tribological centres were specified. One centre included, piston-piston rings and cylinder, in which, piston rings serve as labyrinth seal and the cylinder constitutes piston guides. Crank bearings and main bearings of engine crankshaft constitute the second centre. From the point of tribological view, piston-piston rings and cylinder constitute slide and thrust bearing lubricated hydrodynamically, while crankshaft bearings a-c-t as slide and journal bearings also lubricated hydrodynamically. In the description of thermal load of the above-mentioned tribological centres, special attention was paid to criteria that ensure their motion reliability and durability of engine operation. Whereas in the description of mechanical load of elements constituting investigated centres, some criteria were determined resulting from their functionality and fatigue strength of the material they were made of. Criteria of thermal loads were based on mean density flux of heat conducted through the walls of engine elements, paying attention to their low precision of evaluation. It has been emphasized that synthetic criteria indicators are the most precise. They are determined on the basis of engine load measurements during its operation. Those criteria allow us to describe the operating process of con-rod-piston diesel engines and at the same time it is possible to expose their technical condition which is of essential practical meaning. The wear process of tribological centres that takes place during operating in piston-con-rod system, affects the course of engine working process and its techno-economic indicators.

Explanation of phenomena occurring in pistons of combustion engines which appear during heating and cooling processes in reference to standard materials and composite materials of high material proprieties is aim of the paper. Bring over researches were mostly directed on measurements of difference dimensions which appear during the piston work in the combustion engine. The paper concentrates on phenomenon of different proprieties of materials. The thermal stresses and shocks differ. In the thermal shock, thermal stresses are caused by instantaneous temperature gradients which appear at high engine speed. These stresses are determined thro temperature distribution and they do not differ from stresses in steady-state conditions. Researches concerning thermal expansions were performed by means of sensitive dilatometer which can work in simple and differential system. Changes of dimensions versus temperature function were measured with inductive sensor and the sensitive Pt-ptrh thermocouple, and results were referred to reference material-Platinum. Research results are illustrated on diagrams of different courses of changes of the of thermal expansion coefficient during heating and cooling of standard and composite materials. Values of the thermal expansion coefficient a for the heating and cooling are smaller for composite alloys. The course of the coefficient â during cooling can be higher or lower from the coefficient a during heating. Similar values were also received. Maximum differences were of 10%. Smaller values of the coefficient a for composite alloys cause that for such the same thermal loads temperature gradients will be smaller for composite alloys. Courses of changes of the coefficient â have a different characteristics suited from chemical composition of alloy, granularity of the composite component and thermal treatment.

It is oblivious, various properties of fuels cause different thermal loads of engines. Question is, how big is this effect and what fuel compound and its property play insignificant part. This paper is focused on problem of quality of diesel commercial fuels in Polish market and it is a challenge to find answer for question mentioned above. The academic staff from Wroclaw University of Technology organized tests with different commercial fuels. Chemical and physical properties of these fuels were studied and used for investigation to define relationships between them and thermal load during simulation process. All researches were done in the lab of Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines at the Wroclaw University of Technology. Tests have showed differences in chemical and physical properties of fuels, but there is no statistics effect on engine parameters. Results have not also pointed any important differences in thermal loads of engine VW1,9 TDI and its components according to different physical and chemical properties of tested fuels. It is probably because there are differences of calorific values from one side but from other hands various density and specific fuel consumption compensated these differences. To burn unit of fuel contains higher level of oxygen, engine needs lower amount of air, so it gives, for the same fuelling system, lean mixture. It causes higher temperature of exhaust gases and a bit higher exhaust losses

Certain results of the comparative studies of the high-speed Diesel engine V-12 of the “W” series were presented in the article. The engine was modernised in regard of possibilities to achieve better performances at specific fuel consumption, smaller exhaust emission, smaller scavenge, lower noise and better thermal stability. The subject of this work is the piston cast of novel composite silumin. The development of novel composite silumin (aluminium-silicon alloy), which contains a little more Copper and Nickel, and the introduction of novel alloyed elements, such as Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, increases the strength of the alloy and its thermal stability during successive heating and cooling. The pistons made of this alloy may have a little bigger outside diameter than the pistons made of PA-12 standard alloy, and a smaller clearance between the piston and cylinder liner. The pistons made of standard and novel alloy were mounted successively in the "W" engine. The full load and part load curves were determined. The lubrication oil consumption, fuel consumption, exhaust emission, blow-by and noise were determined too. The article presents the results of the above-mentioned research. The novel composite alloy enables further engine modernization because the engine should operate at higher pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber.

The internal combustion engine should be rated for the thermal loads that come from different sources. Thermal analysis is important both for design purposes and for evaluating the conditions of its use. Very good results are obtained by a combination of non-invasive measurement techniques, such as research using infrared thermal imaging techniques [3, 11]. The purpose of the study was to determine the engine thermal load by evaluating the average temperature on the outside surface of the engine at many of its points for two selected motorcycle engines with similar displacement capacities. For many reasons, such as ecology, durability, engine strength and thermal performance when heating and cooling are critical. To accomplish this task, a thermographic technique for indirect evaluation has been used, thus creating the possibility of measuring the temperature in a dynamic manner. These are accurate measurements and most importantly do not interfere with the construction of the object under investigation. The engine was tested during operation according to external and load characteristics. As a result of the work, graphs of temperature curves of heating and cooling of the tested engines were compiled. The article presents a methodology for measuring the temperature fields of outer surface engines. The collected material will be used in the future for studying the equable load on the cylinders, and as accurately as possible determine the conditions of movement such as power, revolutions, flow rates, temperatures and pressures.

The paper presents the theoretical basis and practical implementation of the concept of a five-stroke cycle where an additional expansion of the working medium is achieved in a separate cylinder. The work, carried out at the Cracow University of Technology, constitutes a development of the idea of five-stroke engine. This paper proposes a new theoretical thermodynamic cycle that describes the processes occurring in a five-stroke engine. It has been taken into consideration that the expansion ratio of the engine is twice the compression ratio. At the next step an analysis of the thermodynamic cycle with particular emphasis on its thermal efficiency compared to efficiency of four-stroke engine has been shown. In the second part of the article selected research results of the five-stroke engine built based on the existing four-cylinder spark ignition engine have been presented. A comparison of the total efficiency obtained by the engine in the four- and five-stroke version has been provided. Similar comparisons for specific emission of the selected exhaust components have also been given.

The research focuses on the solutions to avoid overheating the intake and exhaust valves due to engine overload. Subaru EJ25 engines are currently mounted in passenger cars such as Subaru Impreza but the author's innovative idea is to use them in small passenger airplanes. The paper describes the coupled thermo - mechanical load model of a supercharged Subaru EJ25 engine. The engine piston was tested thermally and mechanically, and the intake and exhaust valves only thermally. The calculations were done using the finite element method (FEM) in ABAQUS 6.10. Parts where divided into Hex and Tet mesh elements, depending of their geometry. The models used in the simulation were previously created using CATIA v5. Because there were only separate parts, the authors used only Part Module. The process of 3D scanning based on the method of reverse engineering was for fine mapping the surface of the examined parts, e.g. a piston. The boundary conditions and material properties are based on the literature and the information provided by the companies that sell spare parts for this engine. The simulations were done for varied heating times and mechanical load (25, 50, 100, 250, 400 seconds).

Pistons of internal-combustion engines work in the conditions of high mechanical and thermal loads. The typical alloy materials applied on pistons of internal-combustion engines have inadequate parameters for such applications. It mainly refers to the fatigue strength of the mechanical and thermal character and to the thermal shocks. In relation with fact that the piston of internal-combustion engine has unsymmetrical shape, that in every case of the piston temperature increase the unequal deformations appear and stresses related with this, what causes fatigue loads of the piston structure. The paper presents special demands, which pistons of contemporary of internal-combustion engines must fulfil with respect to strength, thermal and useful properties, mirrored in the engine work parameters, like engine oil consumption, fuel consumption, noise, gas blow by to the crankcase and the emission of toxic exhaust elements, mainly hydrocarbons. One turned attention on the new material that can be used in manufacture of pistons for the internal-combustion engines, which is the carbon material. In the article the results of research for the mechanical, thermal and engine properties are submitted for the pistons manufactured from a new material. On the emphasis deserve fact, that the application of new materials permits on the obtainment of the small difference in the coefficient of linear thermal expansion during the heating and the cooling, that will bring many profitable effects of both functional and useful nature.

This article concerns the issue of thermal degradation process of fuels, important from the perspective of the operation of turbine engines, especially in the context of new fuels/bio-fuels and their implementation. The studies of the kerosenebased jet fuel (Jet A-1) and its blends with synthetic components manufactured according to HEFA and ATJ technology, were presented. Both technologies are currently approved by ASTM D7566 to produce components to be added to turbine fuels. Test rig investigations were carried out according to specific methodology which reflects the phenomena taking place in fuel systems of turbine engines. The mechanism of thermal degradation process was assessed on the basis of test results for selected properties, IR spectroscopy and calculation of activation energy. The results show that with the increase of the applied temperature there is an increment of the content of solid contaminants, water and acid for all tested fuels. Thermal degradation process is different for conventional jet fuel when compared to blends, but also semi-synthetic fuels distinguished by different thermal stability depending on a given manufacturing technology.

Novel composite material was worked out based on experiences and researches realized in the Institute of Aviation, the Lodz Technical University and PZL WOLA Company. Actually applied silumins on the pistons secure them high-quality for durability, low Rm and HB values at increased temperature, high hysteresis of the coefficient a during heating and cooling, high clearance between the piston and the cylinder, increased oil consumption, blowthrough and obtainment relatively low-power engine. Thereby works concerning elaborations of novel composite material based on the standard silumin with better from at present applied on the piston properties are presented. Novel composite material on the pistons has mechanical properties in the ambient temperature: Rm ≥ 400 MPa; Rp0.2 ≥ 330 MPa; A5 ≥ 3.5%; HB ≥ 130 and in the temperature 250°C: Rm ≥ 320 MPa; Rp0.2 ≥ 240 MPa; A5 ≥ 5%; HB ≥ 90. Metallographic and ATD researches, the researches of the hardness, the researches of Rm, Rp0.2 and A5, the researches of the coefficient of thermal expansion "α", engine researches were performed. Curves ATD and the microstructure the alloy are presented. Test results of the S12-U diesel engine engine are introduced too.

Ecological aspects and utilization of biomass as a fuel leads to applying of a closed work cycle in the piston engine. It forces usually to delivering of heat to working medium through a heat exchanger. The heat may get from any type of fuel in an external combustion chamber, which allows on precisely control of combustion process. The paper describes a new conception of the engine operating in two-stroke cycle with working medium being in the close system, the best with the perfect gas as argon or helium. The delivering process of working medium with high temperature from the heat exchanger takes place through the inlet valve during a few dozen degrees of CA rotation in piston position at TDC. Expansion stroke takes place until outlet valve opens shortly BBDC. The outlet period from the cylinder follows almost at constant pressure and at low temperature to an adiabatic chamber, from where the working medium is compressed by an adiabatic compressor to pressure near pressure being in the heat exchanger. The engine works in two-stroke cycle and enables to get low temperature and pressure as early as BDC through a long time of opening of the outlet valve. The paper presents the ideological scheme of the engine system and theoretical thermal cycle. On this basis one presents the theoretical description of the individual thermodynamic processes with determination of thermal parameters of the characteristic points of the cycle. This article determines also the thermal efficiency of such closed cycle. The presented engine may have a practical applying as a stationary engine in energetic systems, where as fuel may be biomass, which globally influences on decreasing of CO2 and NOx by temperature control of the combustion process

Pistons of internal-combustion engines are the most loaded elements of internal-combustion engines, belong to these specialistic elements, which have essential influence on the ecological properties of engines, their durability and reliability. The object of paper is pistons manufactured from the standard material and from new research alloy. The investigations were performed with dilatometer permitting on the registration of changes of the dimensions of sample in the function of temperature and time. The measurements are possible in straight system and in differential system. Exemplary results of investigations are presented in the paper. During the piston heating, period preutectic phases succumb the partial dissolution in solid solution a, but in the cooling process they secrete again. As a consequence the piston partial deformation occurs, which by result is gradual growth of difference between its expansibility during the warming and contraction in the process of cooling (so-called hysteresis occurs). The characteristics of the new piston silumin alloys give possibility of dearances minimalization and the obtainments of a correct engine performance in the full range of engine rotational velocities and loads. The effect are the decrease of the oil expenditure, the decrease of the emission of hydrocarbons in exhaust gases, the decrease of blowbys to crankcase, the decrease of the expenditure of piston rings grooves wear and the piston skirt wear, the decrease of the piston deformation and the increase of engine durability and reliability.

This article applies to searching for symptoms and diagnostic parameters pointing in a deterioration in the quality of the combustion process in marine diesel engines. It was assumed that diagnostic parameters should give clear information regardless of engine load or with respect to the mean indicated pressure. The proposed cycle and sectional net thermal (heat) efficiency characteristics and also dimensionless net heat release rate were analysed. In order to obtain the state of deterioration of the injection process simulation of discalibration (larger diameter) of injector holes was performed. The simulation was carried out by the enlarged of diameter of the injector holes form 0.375 mm to 0.385 mm. Deterioration of the formation and growth of fuel spray droplet diameter is result of such simulation. The study was conducted on a laboratory engine Sulzer Al25/30. The study was carried out according to active experiment plan, during which the selected engine failure of the injection system was simulated. Measurements of pressure of combustion were performed by means of tensometric sensors of Spice Company on the indicator valve. In the present paper the results of investigations into the degradation mechanizm of thermal barrier coating (TBC) applied in spark ignited and naturally aspirated diesel engines are presented. The TBC comprised 0.09 mm thick NiCrAlY bond coat and 0.36 mm thick Al2O3-40%TiO2 top coat. The coating was atmospheric plasma sprayed on piston heads, inlet and outlet valves and engine head. Top coating was heavily damaged in thermal fatigue tests and in exploitation test on spark ignited engine. The mechanism of damage was spalling of the outermost layer of ceramics. Porosity of the ceramic coating increased significantly which made the coating permeable to the products of combustion and thus facilitated corrosion attack on bond layer. Spalling of coating did not increase wear of piston rings and sleeves. X-ray diffraction studies proved high phase stability ofAl2O3-40%TiO2 top coat. Al2Or40%TiO2 APS sprayed coating cannot be considered the alternative top coat to currently used ZrO2-8%Y2O3in engine applications. Thermal barrier coating based on Al2O3-40%TiO2 can not be used for adiabatization of diesel or spark ignited engines. Al2O3-40%TiO2 based TBC can be used in less demanding applications.

The main purpose of the preliminary analyses presented in the paper was to compare the behaviour of the combustion engine piston made of different type of materials under thermal load. A thermomechanical FE analysis of the engine piston made of composite material was shown. A selected engine is installed in one of the popular polish tanks. The proposed new material is characterized by a low hysteresis – the differences of the coefficient of thermal expansion for heating and cooling are not significant. The results obtained for the piston made of a new material were compared with those for the current standard material. The piston was loaded by a temperature field inside it. Appropriate averaged thermal boundary conditions such as temperatures and heat fluxes were set on different surfaces of the FE model. FE analyses were carried out using MSC.Marc software. Development of the FE model was also presented. Geometrical CAD model of the piston was developed based on the actual engine piston, which was scanned using a 3D laser scanner. A cloud of points obtained from the scanner was processed and converted into a 3- dimensional solid model. FE model of a quarter part of the piston was developed for the preliminary analysis presented in the paper. 4-node tetrahedron finite elements were applied since there was no axial symmetry of the considered object. The temperature field inside the piston was determined and presented in the form of contour bands. Contours of displacement and stress in a radial direction were shown as well.

The article presents the results of the investigations cover novel composite silumins with new alloying additives, such as chromium and molybdenum (not yet used in this type of silumin) and increased content of nickel and copper. The samples strength tests were performed at room temperature (20°C) and at elevated temperatures (up to 350°C), and were carried out using the strength machine, equipped with the special climate chamber. The dimensional stability of the new aluminum alloy was investigated using the precision dilatometer. This device allows one to register and record the sample dimensions as a function of temperature, during sample heating and cooling. During the DTA crystallization process investigations, derivative curves have been determined, that allows the analysis of the solidification process and the analysis of the heat transfer process in the sample structure and phase transformations. In the article shows the derivative curve and representative microstructures, and characteristic temperatures for the conventional AlSi12 alloy and novel composite alloy. All research results indicated that the newly developed composite aluminum alloy has far better parameters than aluminum alloys used previously for pistons of the internal combustion engines. This article concludes with a summary of the advantages of the new composite alloys.

Aluminum is the most popular matrix for the metal matrix composites The Al alloys are attractive due to their low density, their capability to be strengthened by precipitation, their good corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, and their high damping capacity. The characteristics of metal matrix composite materials are determined by their microstructure and internal interfaces, which are affected by their production and thermal mechanical treatment. Investigations to improve the combustion piston engines arę leading to improve the working process performance by increase ofits parameters, especially the average temperature of the thermodynamic cycle. New piston consists of two parts manufactured of standard and composite materials are presented in the paper. Composite alloy has chemical composition of short fibre with Al2 O3 was following, in the mass percentage: 96% Al2 03, 4%, SiO2. As the binder the colloidal silica was used in quantity 5%. The volume of fibres in the insert was 22 plus or minus 2% by volume. Bending strength of the insert was 0.5 MPa. Temperature and stresses distribution in standard piston and different versions of composite pistons are introduced in the paper. The paper presents the resistance of investigated materials on thermal shocks. Experimental veriflcation of manufactured composite pistons in the engine proved the larger exhaust temperaturę for about 20-70°C, in comparison with the engine with standard pistons (that gives the greater effectiveness of turbo charging application), proved the lowering of a individual volume of gases blow-bys to the crankcase, the lowering of noise level, larger resistance on thermal loads.

Research results of novel silumins on pistons for combustion engines, which have high mechanical properties within the range of piston higher operating temperatures, 100-300°C, are presented in the paper. Silumins contain enlarging concentration of the nickel and copper alloy additives up to 4.0, and chrome and molybdenum alloy additives up to 1.0%. Occurrence of given microstructure in piston-silumins results in almost the same values of the coefficient thermal expansion during the heating up to the 300 °C temperature and during the next cooling into the ambient temperature. Small values of the coefficient of expansion of thermal and small differences between values of the coefficient of thermal expansion during heating and cooling enable on application of small values of working clearances between piston and the cylinder liner. As a consequence they make possible, the low exhaust emission level, and the low noise level. The pistons from alloys with small values ofthe coefficient of thermal expansion, small differences of this coefficient during heating and cooling are novel aspects presented in paper. Research results of strength and metallographic parameters, research results of the coefficient of thermal expansion, comparative engine research results are represented in the paper. In particular representative chemical components for a standard alloy and novel alloy, mechanical properties investigated alloys after solution heat treatment, wear resistance of novel alloy compared with two cast irons, ATD curves, fibrous construction, silicon construction, microstructure of novel alloy, courses of changes of the coefficient of thermal expansion in the function of the temperature during heating and cooling are presented in the paper.

This work presents a complete thermal cycle modeling of a four-stroke diesel engine with a three-dimensional simulation program CFD - AVL Fire. The object of the simulation was the S320 Andoria engine. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of fuel dose distribution on selected parameters of the combustion process. As a result of the modeling, time spatial pressure distributions, rate of pressure increase, heat release rate and NO and soot emission were obtained for 3 injection strategies: no division, one pilot dose and one main dose and two pilot doses and one main dose. It has been found that the use of pilot doses on the one hand reduces engine hardness and lowers NO emissions and on the other hand, increases soot emissions.

The researches were carried out at the use of the precise dilatometer of the firm BAHR 802/801. The device makes possible the registration of changes of measurements of the sample in the function of the temperature. Measurements in the simpler and differential are possible. Heating and cooling is performed in the special device, which realizes the programme temperature, controlled computer. Changes of dimensions are measured with an inductive sensor. Samples were placed in the quartz-pipe and changes of their length were transferred by quartz-rods. The temperature of tested material was measured by means of the Pt-PtRh thermocouple. Material on the pistons has a fundamental meaning for the value of the clearances between the cylinder and the piston. Too small clearness between the piston and cylinder on the cold engine cannot be applying, because during the work of an engine it would be able to occur seizing of an engine. From here, also the large resistance on seizing of material of the piston is essential. Investigated composite materials performed based on piston-silumins AK12 and AK18 in which a composite addition was silicon carbide (SiC) and ferric sulphide (FeS).

In the paper, numeric calculations relating to the influence of engine speed on thermal stresses of the piston in a turbocharged diesel engine in the initial phase of its work were carried out. Novel composite ma hysteresisterials on the pistons are characterised that they occur in them multiple intermetallic phases which crystallize in the high temperature, before crystallization of the alfa+beta (Al+Si) eutectic. For forming of pre-eutectic phases, chromium and molybdenum are introduced to silumins, and for derivation of multiple increased concentration of nickel and copper and decreased concentration of magnesium are accomplished. On the basis of evaluations of mechanical and thermal loads of combustion engines pistons applying essence of composite materials of combustion engines pistons, as well requirements for combustion engines pistons, especially high loaded engines are expressed. Test results of hardness, influence of temperature of casting, test results of mechanical properties, friction coefficient and coefficient of thermal expansion are presented in the paper. The special attention devoted to so called hysteresis coefficient of thermal expansion and hysteresis of the relative elongation in function temperature and time. Courses of coefficient of thermal expansion for standard and composite material are presented. Differences of the a coefficient during heating and cooling in function temperature are relative to kind of heat treatment. Two-stage heat treatment is beneficial for the obtainment small values of the a coefficient.

W pojazdach wojskowych istotnym zagadnieniem jest rozruch silników spalinowych. Ze względu na warunki klimatyczne oraz nieregularne wykorzystywanie silników, poza standardowym rozrusznikiem często są one wyposażone w dodatkowe systemy wspomagania rozruchu. Mają one za zadanie ułatwiać uruchomienie silnika oraz chronić silnik przed nadmiernym zużyciem czy zniszczeniem. W artykule zaprezentowano stosowane rozwiązania układów rozruchowych w pojazdach militarnych. Przedstawiono także koncepcję rozwiązania wspomagającego rozruch i fazę nagrzewania silnika.
In military vehicles very important is starting system of combustion engines. Weather conditions and irregular usage of engines causes that auxiliary starters are necessary. With these systems engines have easier start and better protection against damage. An article presents several examples of engines’ starters from military vehicles and conception of system which supports engine’s start and warm up.

The subject of the article concerns the issues associated with thermal degradation of aviation fuels under high temperature conditions. Due to the intensive development towards increasingly higher thermal loads for both, turbine aviation engines, as well as the used fuels, the issue of thermal stability of the fuel itself is extremely important. In aviation, the fuel, apart from direct participation in energy generation during the combustion process of a fuel-air mixture, also takes part in the heat transfer in many aircraft systems. As a result, requirements in terms of the fuel’s thermal potential are increasingly higher. The standard method for determining the thermal stability of fuel executed on a JFTOT device proves to be insufficient in the context of the appearing issues in current operation. The article presents a non-standard approach to the assessment of aviation fuel thermal degradation with the use of a specialist test rig. The authors believe that the presented methodology and the measurement capabilities of the test rig are valuable supplementary material for the standardized thermal stability test. It allows more thoroughly understanding the phenomena undergoing in the fuel impacted by high temperatures. In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

Parameters of the turbofan engine comparative cycle (turbine inlet temperature, compression of compressors), by-pass ratio, fan compressor, (or low pressure compressor) are the most important engine parameters which determine their characteristics and construction. In order to fulfill the task there is a necessity for searching the optimum parameters for the system. The most important equation that binds airplane and engine characteristics is mass balance equation. The sum of engine mass and fuel mass was called total engine-fuel mass. In the paper specific total engine mass index was introduced (gamma 2). This index is equal to total engine-fuel mass divided by thrust in design point. Impact of the choice of the design point on the total mass index of the engine and the fuel used up was presented for different airplane mission. The next problem is to find those thermodynamics parameters (compression ratio, turbine inlet total temperature, bypass ratio) which give minimum of total mass of engine and consumed fuel for different airplane missions. A very important parameter that plays the part in fuel consumption is airplane flight time. The most important conclusion is that the best thermodynamics parameters from minimum mass criterion are less than for minimum specific fuel consumption.
Parametry obiegu porównawczego dwuprzeplywowego turbinowego silnika odrzutowego determinują jego charakterystyki i schemat konstrukcyjny. W pracy przedstawiono problem poszukiwania optymalnych wartości parametrów termogazodynamicznych obiegu porównawczego silnika turbinowego. Do tych parametrów zaliczono: spręż całkowity sprężarki, temperaturę przed turbiną, stopień podziału strumieni. Przedstawiono wpływ wybranych warunków lotu, sprężu sprężarki i temperatury przed turbiną na zmianę ciągu jednostkowego i jednostkowego zużycia paliwa. Jako kryterium optymalizacji wybrano sumaryczną masę silnika i paliwa, wymaganą do wykonania zadania lotniczego. Wykorzystano, zbudowany na potrzeby innych prac, model silnika, który jest funkcją parametrów termogazodynamicznych. Wyprowadzono zależności pozwalające na optymalizację jednostkowej masy sumarycznej (jako kryterium bezwymiarowego). Przeprowadzono szereg obliczeń, których wyniki przedstawiono na wykresach. Wykazano, że na podstawie wybranego kryterium optymalizacji, jakim jest sumaryczna masa silnika i paliwa, można wyznaczyć wartości sprężu sprężarki, dla których wskazane kryteria oceny masy osiągają swoje minimum.

According to operation characteristics of the main engine 9K98ME-C7, a combined turbines-exhaust gas waste heat recovery system is proposed to recover waste heat and increase system energy efficiency. Thermodynamic models based on the first thermodynamic law and the second thermodynamic law are formulated. The superheated steam yield, the total electric power yield, the first thermodynamic law efficiency, the exergy efficiency at different exhaust gas boiler working pressure, and the variation of the exergy efficiency under different feed water temperature and different steam turbine back pressure are analyzed. Thermodynamic results indicate that the most appropriate exhaust gas boiler pressure is 0.8MPa for studied main engine and the total thermal efficiency with combined turbines arrangement has climbed up to 53.8% from 48.5%.

Large seagoing vessels are one of the largest pollution sources in the sea environment world. Marine engines operate with extremely low quality fuels contaminated by sulphur and aromatic compounds. Vessels are responsible for an estimated 14 percent total nitrogen oxide emission and 16 percent sulphur oxide, respectively. Nitrogen oxides emissions cause serious problems including acid rain in local areas such as harbours' vicinity. All diesel engine manufacturers have been working on reducing on NOx from ships. This paper describes one of the experimental methods - using non-thermal plasma reactor. NTP reactor was built as the after-treatment module in exhaust gas system in marine diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out on the engine with and without demonstrator NTP module. The main aim was to analyze exhaust gas compounds during real engine operation, in accordance with test cycles procedureD-2 and E-2 (ISO-8178 rules). The experiment test bench gives the innovative role in the development exhaust gas after-treatment technology for marine systems. One of the most promising methods to decrease the number of toxic compounds from exhaust gas is implementing of NTP reactor as after main treatment module. As the next steps a two-stage plasma-chemical process for the control of harmful compounds: non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst is proposed. This combination should be more effective and probably gives reduction with more efficiency of harmful exhaust gas compounds.

The problem of design parameters selection of the turbine engine is the most important task at the preliminary design stage of the multi-purpose aircraft. A special feature of the multi-purpose aircraft mission is a sudden (even pulse) weight change, especially its decrease as a result of discharge of cargo bombing or rockets due to the ammunition consumption during air combat manoeuvring. In this article the attempt to use economic and mass criteria to assess the impact of the type of air missions on the choice of the design parameters of the engine was done. As the design, parameters there were selected the following measures: compression ratio, the turbine temperature and the bypass ratio. A mathematical model of the engine – aircraft – air task system was built (taking into account the flight conditions, the mission elements – the subsonic and supersonic flight, flight time, thermo-gas-dynamic and mass model of the engine). The model enables to conduct the simulation research of the complex flight missions and their assessment on the basis of the constructed criteria. The model includes a parametric description of physical processes in the turbofan engine, thereby allowing a direct assessment of the impact of the selection of engine parameters on the effectiveness of the mission. The paper presents the results of calculations according to the classical criteria (e.g. kilometre fuel consumption, specific fuel consumption of the engine). New criteria for evaluation were presented; they are the energy efficiency of complex mission of an aircraft and the relative total and specific fuel consumption. The values of circuit parameters that need to be taken as design constraints for the engine to allow the implementation of the aviation missions were determined. The results are shown in an illustrative way on the number of graphs.

Jednym z ważniejszych procesów, mającym wpływ m.in. na trwałość i niezawodność silnika oraz na zużycie paliwa i emisję toksycznych składników spalin, jest proces smarowania wszystkich węzłów tarcia. Ze względu na sposób i charakter smarowania tulei cylindrowej nieuniknione jest przedostawanie się części oleju smarowego do komory spalania, przez co poza samym procesem smarowania, bierze on również częściowo udział w procesie spalania. W artykule przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania metod termoanalitycznych do określenia wybranych właściwości oleju takich jak np. temperatura krystalizacji, temperatura samozapłonu, produkty rozkładu termicznego.
One of the most important process in the internal combustion engine, which has the influence on durability and reliability, but also on fuel consumption and emission, is the lubrication of all engine kinematic pairs. For the sake of cylinder liner lubrication method and character, it is unavoidable to get the lubricating oil to the combustion chamber. As a consequence the lubricating oil takes part in the combustion process. In the paper the prospects of evaluation of selected engine lubricating oil parameters, such as cristallization temperature, self ignition temperature or thermal decomposition products, are presented.

Hot surfaces in ship engine rooms are the risk objects that most frequently contribute to fire ignition. Thermography, especially when using thermal cameras, offers many advantages over more common infrared thermometers, but dedicated systems are often prohibitively expensive. An affordable hybrid approach was thus tested in this study, where a low-cost thermal camera smartphone was paired with a common infrared thermometer. Measurements were taken in situ during a sea voyage in an engine room under normal operating conditions, and the surfaces of the main engine, the generating set auxiliary engine, and the exhaust gas boiler were tested. Several areas were discovered to be well above the generally-accepted temperature limit of 220°C, primarily due to absent or poor insulation. Clear recommendations for remediation are made, and the proposed testing method offers fast, easy, effective, and affordable inspection.

A compression ignition engine fuelled simultaneously with two fuels: a fuel with low cetane number used as the main fuel, and Diesel oil used to initiation of ignition, is assumed to be called as a dual fuel engine. This system is perfectly suited to adaptation to supply of CNG gas in majority of compression ignition engines. Such adaptations can concern both an older engine equipped with classic injection system, and modern engine with common rail system. In traction engines, interchangeability of liquid fuel by the gas belongs to important issues, what is a condition of profitability of the adaptation and operation of dual fuel engines. In the paper are presented test results of the 1CA90 engine with piston pump to injection of liquid fuel, and a system with mixer to supply of the gas; and the SB3.1 engine equipped with common rail system and injection of the gas in area of the inlet valve. On the base of performed tests one has shown variability of energetic fraction of the CNG gas in total energy supplied to the engine. The tests were performed in complete field of variability of engine parameters, i.e. rotational speed and engine load. Obtained results have shown that in spite of decreasing fraction of the gas at partial loads of medium size traction engines, substantial reduction of operational consumption of the Diesel oil is possible. Due to significant differences in price of the CNG gas and the Diesel oil, it gives considerable savings in operational costs of the engines. It should encourage users of the engines to adaptation of the fuelling to the CNG gas. In the paper is presented a proposal of control system to dual fuel traction engine, from maintaining its performance parameters point of view.

The paper describes the basic methodological principles and the results of development and practical application of simultaneous complex parametric analysis of the in-cylinder processes and thermal load on cylinder piston unit in diesel engines. The application of the suggested method to research and conceptualize engine design allows us to choose an optimal combination of the cylinder-piston unit parameters and diesel engine control. As a result, an admissible level of thermal stress in the most heavily loaded parts of cylinder-piston unit and low fuel consumption of diesel engines are achieved. A limited number of factors determining perfect in-cylinder processes make this method easy to visualise as well as providing it with a clear physical meaning of graphically presented results, not restricting the analysis to the design parameters of engine units. The method was practically used for upgrading high-speed diesel engines of the trademarks CHN 16.5/18.5, CHN 15/18, and CHN 15/15, to increase their power based on the average indicated pressure, and to reduce their fuel consumption and harmful environmental effects. In particular, a method implemented in diesel engines CHN 15/15 of the basic design with their power increased by 60-70%, the power of diesel CHN 16.5/18.5 was increased by 70-100%.

In the paper are presented comparative tests of combustion of gasoline and combustion of methanol in spark ignition engine of the Fiat 1100 MPI type. The engine was equipped with a prototype suction manifold with duplex injectors on each cylinder. Implemented system enabled dual fuel operation of the engine with any fraction of the alcohol. Engine performance and start-up capabilities were the same like in case of the operation on gasoline only. Type and parameters of the fuel supply can be changed in any time during operation of the engine. The study dealt with comparison of a selected parameters used to assessment of combustion of the fuels: pressure of the working medium p, rate of pressure rise dp/d, heat release rate dQ/d, temperature of the working medium, and combustion angle. The investigations pointed at considerable differences in run of combustion of the gasoline and combustion of the methanol, as autonomous fuels. Moreover, addition of methanol to gasoline results in considerable differences in combustion process, comparing to combustion of gasoline mixtures. The combustion goes on more dynamically, especially during initial phase of the process, while total time of the combustion is shorter. Effects of these changes are: higher maximal pressures, faster rates of pressure growth and heat release. Extent of change of combustion parameters depends on methanol fraction in total dose of the fuel supplied to the engine. Addition of the methanol effects in growth of general efficiency of the engine, which increases together with growth of methanol fraction and engine load. Absolute growth of the efficiency amounted to 2-5%, while relative growth amounted to 6-16%. Such significant growth of the efficiency should lead to reduction of energy consumption during engine operation.

Within the framework of the basic research task funded by the Agency for support of research and development we solve a problem of a more effective non-conventional usage of the part of energy taken away by the ICE cooling system. The energy is used for production of cold. Results ofpartial solutions and methodology of energetic evaluation have been already presented in various conferences and symposia as well as published in several professional journals. This contribution brings some newly acquired theoretical and practical experience gathered during the operation of a test laboratory sample of the cooling engine in a non-conventional energetic unit. Experiments were focused on temperature mapping. The basic scheme of a non-conventional energetic unit with a cooling engine, the view of a functional laboratory sample, surface temperature in the vicinity of evaporator - taken by thermal imaging, time course of changes in the engine torque, revolutions and temperature on the engine, temperatures in the evaporator, temperatures in the liquefier, temperatures in the absorber, temperatures in the evaporator, temperatures in the VBR exchanger are presented in the paper. The results of the experiment shown that there is a 10 - 15 % agreement with the results acquired through calculations. Theoretical assumptions and solutions carried out for the alternative cooling liquid of the cooling engine in a non-conventional energetic unit can be considered real. Within the framework of this consideration a test circuit is being prepared for experiments with alternative cooler.

The article presents calculations of thermal and mechanical loads of the piston, consisting of two parts: steel and aluminum. The calculations were made using FEM in the Abaqus software. The piston is characterized by a split construction and was equipped with a cooling oil channel. The piston will be used in an aircraft diesel engine characterized by opposite piston movement. The presented geometry of the piston is the next of the ones being developed earlier and contains preliminary assumptions as to the size and main geometrical dimensions. The thermal boundary conditions of the simulation tests assumed defined areas of heat reception surface and heating of the piston by defining a temperature map on its crown. The results of these studies were presented in the form of temperature distribution and heat flux on the surface of the tested element. The strength boundary conditions assumed a mechanical load in the form of pressure resulting from the pressure in the combustion chamber applied to the piston crown surface and the opposite pressure defined on the support at the surface of contact between the piston and the piston pin. The results of these tests were presented in the form of stress distribution on the surface of the tested element. As a result of the analyses carried out, the results constituting the basis for further modernization of the piston geometry were obtained.

Opis:
Applying of a closed work cycle in the piston engine leads usually to delivering of heat to working medium through a heat exchanger (Stirling engine). The heat may get from any type of fuel in an external combustion chamber, which allows on precisely control of combustion process. The paper describes a new conception of two-stroke engine with working medium being in the close system, the best with the perfect gas as argon or helium. The engine has the conventional crank-piston system and an inlet and outlet valves placed in the cylinder head. The delivering process of working medium with high temperature from the heat exchanger takes place through the inlet valve during a few dozen degrees of CA rotation in piston position at TDC. Expansion stroke takes place until outlet valve opens shortly BBDC. The outlet period from the cylinder follows almost at constant pressure and at low temperature to an adiabatic chamber, from where the working medium is compressed by an adiabatic compressor to pressure near pressure being in the heat exchanger. The engine works in two-stroke cycle and enables to get low temperature and pressure as early as BDC through a long time of opening of the outlet valve. The paper presents the ideological scheme of the engine system and theoretical thermal cycle. On this basis one presents the mathematical description of the individual thermodynamic processes with determination of thermal parameters of the characteristic points of the cycle with taking into account of work of the compressor and amount of delivering heat to the exchanger. This article determines also the thermal efficiency of such closed cycle. The presented engine may have a practical applying as a stationary engine in energetic systems, where as fuel may be biomass, which globally influences on decreasing of CO2 and NOx by temperature control of the combustion process.
Zastosowanie zamkniętego obiegu pracy w silniku tłokowym prowadzi zwykle do dostarczenia ciepła do czynnika roboczego poprzez wymiennik ciepła (silnik Stirlinga). Ciepło można uzyskać z dowolnego paliwa w zewnętrznej komorze spalania, co pozwala na dokładniejszą kontrolę procesu spalania. Artykuł opisuje nową koncepcję silnika dwusuwowego z czynnikiem roboczym będącym w układzie zamkniętym, najlepiej gazem doskonałym takim, jak hel czy argon. Silnik ma konwencjonalny układ korbowo-tłokowy oraz zawór dolotowy oraz zawór wylotowy umieszczone w głowicy. Proces dostarczenia czynnika gazowego o wysokiej temperaturze z wymiennika ciepła zachodzi przez zawór dolotowy przez kilkadziesiąt stopni OWK przy położeniu tłoka w GMP. Proces rozprężania odbywa się się do czasu otwarcia zaworu wylotowego krótko przed DMP. Okres wylotu gazu z cylindra następuje prawie przy stałym ciśnieniu i niskiej temperaturze do adiabatycznego zbiornika, skąd czynnik roboczy jest sprężany przez sprężarkę adiabatyczną do ciśnienia panującego w wymienniku ciepła. Silnik pracuje w cyklu dwusuwowym i zapewnia uzyskanie niskiej temperatury oraz ciśnienia począwszy od DMP przez długi czas otwarcia zaworu wylotowego. Artykuł przedstawia schemat ideowy układu oraz teoretyczny obieg cieplny. Na tej podstawie przedstawiono opis matematyczny poszczególnych przemian termodynamicznych z określeniem parametrów termicznych charakterystycznych punktów obiegu z uwzględnieniem pracy wykonanej przez sprężarkę oraz dostarczonego ciepła w wymienniku. W pracy określono również sprawność cieplną takiego obiegu. Przedstawiony silnik może mieć praktyczne zastosowanie jako silnik stacjonarny w układach energetycznych, gdzie paliwem może być biomasa, co globalnie wpływa na zmniejszenie emisji CO2 oraz NOx przez kontrolowanie temperatury procesu spalania.

W Katedrze Silników Spalinowych i Pojazdów Akademii Techniczno Humanistycznej w Bielsku-Białej prowadzone są prace dotyczące wykorzystania paliw alternatywnych w ramach dwupaliwowego zasilania silników ZI. W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję dwupaliwowego zasilania silnika o zapłonie iskrowym z wielopunktowym wtryskiem alkoholu i benzyny za pomocą mieszalnika paliw. Przedstawione rozwiązanie polega na mieszaniu paliw (benzyny i alkoholu) przed kolektorem paliwowym, co zapewnia zmienne udziały alkoholu w paliwie zależnie od warunków pracy silnika (prędkości obrotowej i obciążenia) oraz jego stanu cieplnego. Paliwa dostarczane są do mieszalnika, który umożliwia odpowiedni dobór proporcji alkoholu i benzyny. Przygotowana wstępnie mieszanina paliw wtryskiwana jest przez oryginalne wtryskiwacze silnika do kolektora, w okolice zaworu dolotowego. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wstępną analizę algorytmu sterowania silnikiem zasilanym dwupaliwowo za pomocą proponowanego mieszalnika paliw.
The Department of Internal Combustion Engines and Vehicles, Technical University of Bielsko-Biala are carried out work on alternative fuels in the area of feeding of dual-fuel SI engines. The article presents the concept of dual fuel engine with MPI injection of alcohol and gasoline fuels using a mixing device. The solution consists in mixing fuel (gasoline and alcohol) close the fuel manifold which provides variable share of alcohol in fuel, depending on engine operating conditions (engine revolution and load), and its thermal state. Fuels are delivered to the mixer which allow the suitable selection of the proportion of alcohol and gasoline. Pre-prepared mixture is injected through the original injectors to engine manifold, around the inlet valve. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the control algorithm, for a spark ignition engine fueled by the proposed mixing device.

The paper describes simulation model of thermal deformations of piston of Diesel engine with combustion chamber placed in piston crown. Results for different shapes of combustion chamber are presented and analyzed. For calculations assumed that thermal deformation of piston do not vary within engine 's cycle if it works in constant conditions. An hand of pressure and temperature charts of SW680 engine, heat transfer coefficient on piston crown surface was defined. Heat transfer coefficient on the rest piston surfaces was defined based on the literature. Using finite element method (FEM) code, piston shape was created, and then the piston body was meshed and loaded according to Fourier conditions. Nodes displacements let describe piston deformation. The simulation results allow to find the optimal shape of combustion chamber, in respect of piston deformation, and also can be the base to create the method of fast verify combustion chamber shape. Results simulation research of piston deformations showed that piston deformations were considerably dependent from combustion chamber shape . W artykule przedstawiono model obliczeniowy odkształceń cieplnych tłoka silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym z komorą spalania umieszczoną w jego denku, oraz wyniki obliczeń dla różnych kształtów komory spalania wraz z ich analizą. Do obliczeń przyjęto, że odkształcenia cieplne tłoka są stałe w całym cyklu pracy silnika jeżeli pracuje on w ustalonych warunkach. Na podstawie wykresu indykatorowego silnika SW680 określono współczynnik przejmowania ciepła na powierzchni denka tłoka ALFA 0. Współczynniki przejmowania ciepła na pozostałych powierzchniach tłoka zostały przyjęte na podstawie zależności podanych w literaturze. Za pomocą programu komputerowego wykorzystującego metodę elementów skończonych (MES) zamodelowano tłok, a następnie dyskretyzowano jego objętość elementami przestrzennymi obciążonymi cieplnie przy wykorzystaniu warunków brzegowych trzeciego rodzaju (Fouriera). Wyznaczenie przesunięcia węzłów siatki pozwoliło na określenie odkształceń tłoka. Uzyskane wyniki obliczeń mogą stanowić punkt wyjścia do wyznaczenia optymalnego pod względem odkształceń cieplnych kształtu komory spalania a także być podstawą do stworzenia metody umożliwiającej szybką weryfikację przyjętego kształtu komory spalania. Wyniki badań symulacyjnych odkształceń tłoka, wskazały, że odkształcenia tłoka są w znacznym stopniu zależne od kształtu komory spalania. Największe odkształcenia wystąpiły dla komory o małej głębokości i dużej średnicy. Różnice odkształceń cieplnych części prowadzącej tłoka sięgają do 50mi m.

The water cooled exhaust systems are not often used onboard ships. Prime goal is to lower temperature of exhaust gas from main propulsion and auxiliary engines to the defined limit. The design of such systems require detailed analysis of propulsion system operational parameters to meet designer expectations. The paper outlines the cooled exhaust system design problems in specific application. The simplified method of evaluation of expected cooling water flow requirements has been developed. Based on marine diesel engines test bench data, the results of short analysis of cooling water demand for two different diesel engines are presented. A simplified engineering approach may be useful for assessment of exhaust gas cooling system performance in commercial application like rescue vessels wet exhaust design or exhaust gas cleaning systems.

The paper presents results of FEM investigations into the effect of thermal barrier coating (TBC) on stress and temperature distributions in the components of naturally aspirated diesel engine. Calculations were performed by means of Abaqus ver. 6.8-3 computer program. The considered coating was plasma sprayed double-layered TBC consisting 0.15 mm thick NiCrAl bond layer and 0.3 mm ZrO2-8%Y2O3 top coat. TBC reduced the maximum temperature of the cylinder head by 15K compared to uncoated metal head, increased temperature of the outlet channel by 10 K and reduced maximum temperatures in inlet and outlet valves by 2 and 1.2 K, respectively. Although maximum temperature of the pis ton head remained the same after deposition of the coating but the range of temperatures at the piston head was reduced by 23.8%. Application o f TBC considerably reduced stresses in acritical region of outlet valve- the interface of stellite hardfacing /valve. The highest thermal stresses in the TBC were in the bondcoat, which confirms the common localization of damages. Stress concentrations were also found in the metal part at the edges of TBC and at the edges of the recess machined in the piston head. The reduction of metal temperatures and thermal gradients in protected components should have some positive effect on the components' durability.
W pracy przedstawiono rezultaty badań numerycznych wpływu powłoki typu bariery cieplnej (TBC) na rozkład temperatur i naprężeń w elementach wolnossącego silnika ZS. Obliczenia numeryczne zostały wykonane przy pomocy programu Abaqus wer. 6.8-3. Rozważano natryskaną plazmowo powlokę dwuwarstwową składającą się z warstwy podkładowej o gr. 0,15 mm i warstwy ceramicznej ZrO2-8%Y2O3 o grubości 0,3 mm. TBC obniżyła maksymalną temperaturę głowicy silnika o 15 K w porównaniu do głowicy nie pokrytej powłoką oraz obniżyła maksymalne temperatury zaworów wylotowego i dolotowego o 2 K i 1,2 K, odpowiednio. Wprawdzie maksymalna temperatura tłoka pozostała stała ale obniżył się o 23,8% zakres temperatur na powierzchni tłoka. Zastosowanie powłoki znacznie obniżyło wartość naprężeń w krytycznym miejscu zaworu wylotowego- granicy podłoża i warstwy napawanej stellitem Najwyższa wartość naprężeń TBC występowała w warstwie podkładowej co potwierdziło częstą lokalizację pęknięć. Znaleziono również koncentracje naprężeń na krawędzi TBC i krawędzi wybrania w denku tłoka. Obniżenie temperatur metalu i gradientów temperatur w pokrytych elementach powinno wydłużyć trwałość elementów.

The results of initial simulation research of piston deformations shows that these deformations to a considerable degree will depend from the position of the combustion chamber. The largest deformations stepped out for piston with the chamber farther displaced from the piston axis, the smallest for piston with the symmetrically situated combustion chamber. The largest differences in the deformations steps out in the areas of piston crown. Results from the performed earlier simulations show, that the position of combustion chamber has comparable influence on the deformation of piston leading parts (so essential for the engine exploitation with accordance to the rules), how the combustion chamber shape. Obtained results encourage to the performing of further research works.
W artykule przedstawiono model obliczeniowy odkształceń cieplnych tłoka silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym z komorą spalania umieszczoną w jego denku, oraz wyniki obliczeń dla różnie położonych komór spalania wraz z ich analizą. Do obliczeń przyjęto, że odkształcenia cieplne tłoka są stałe w całym cyklu pracy silnika, jeżeli pracuje on w ustalonych warunkach. Na podstawie wykresu indykatorowego silnika SW680 określono współczynnik przejmowania ciepła na powierzchni denka tłoka a0. Współczynniki przejmowania ciepła na pozostałych powierzchniach tłoka zostały przyjęte na podstawie zależności podanych w literaturze[6]. Przy pomocy programu komputerowego wykorzystującego metodę elementów skończonych (MES) zamodelowano tłok, a następnie dyskretyzowano jego objętość elementami przestrzennymi obciążonymi cieplnie przy wykorzystaniu warunków brzegowych trzeciego rodzaju (Fouriera). Wyniki wstępnych badań symulacyjnych odkształceń tłoka wskazują, że odkształcenia te w znacznym stopniu zależą od położenia komory spalania. Największe odkształcenia wystąpiły dla tłoka z komorą najdalej odsuniętą od osi tłoka, a najmniejsze dla tłoka z symetrycznie umieszczoną komorą spalania. Największe różnice w odkształceniach występują w okolicach korony tłoka. Z przeprowadzonych wcześniej symulacji wynika, że położenie komory spalania ma porównywalny wpływ na odkształcenie części prowadzącej tłoka (tak istotne dla prawidłowej eksploatacji silnika), jak kształt komory spalania. Otrzymane wyniki zachęcają do prowadzenia dalszych prac badawczych.

In the subject-matter literature detail data on stiffness of the crankshaft foundation connected with the frame of marine main engine are still lacking. Thermal deformation models of the engine’s casing, proposed by engine producers, are excessively simplified. However the parameters are crucial for the shaft-line alignment analysis as well as for the analysis of interactions between the shaft-line and engine crankshaft, especially in the case of high power engines. This paper presents a determination method of the marine engine body characteristics as well as results of example computations performed for a Sulzer 7 RTA 84 C engine installed on a ~3000 TEU container ship. It has been demonstrated that the producer’s assumption about parallel displacement of the crankshaft axis in thermal working conditions is too rough. The thermal deformation of the engine is of hogging character, which results in significant change of the moment load exerted on the crankshaft and shaft line. The stiffness parameters recommended by the producers for the shaft-line alignment are estimated correctly, however they represent only engine’s body flexibility, without taking into account ship’s hull flexibility.

The ideal gas approach is very useful in the study of behavior of the compressible fluids because it considers that the gas is composed of many randomly point particles and the interactions between them are perfectly elastic. The ideal gas concept is very important in the analysis of thermodynamic systems and in statistical mechanics. A system that can be studied with this approximation is the ideal paramagnetic gas, which consists of molecules where each of them possesses a magnetic moment in the presence of an external magnetic field. In this paper, we extended the work of Malaver (2015, 2018) for a variable Chaplygin gas to a paramagnetic medium and we have obtained some equations that describe thermodynamic behavior in an ideal paramagnetic gas. It has been derived an expression for the thermal efficiency of Carnot heat engine with a paramagnetic gas as working substance. We found that the efficiency depends on the limits of maximum and minimal temperature imposed on the Carnot cycle, as in the ideal gas, photon gas and variable Chaplygin gas.

The article presents results of investigation on the combustion of a mixture of pyrolysis oil from tires and regular fuel in the internal combustion reciprocating piston engine. The tested fuel consisted of: diesel fuel and pyrolysis oil at amount of 10% by volume. The tests were carried out on a single-cylinder naturally aspirated compression-ignition engine. The engine was equipped with a common rail fuel injection system and an electronic control unit that allowed changing injection timing. A comparative analysis of pressure-volume charts for the reference fuel, which was diese fuel, and for a mixture of diesel with 10% addition of pyrolysis oil was carried out. Injector characteristics for the reference fuel and the mixture were determined. Engine efficiency for both fuels was also determined. Unrepeatability of the engine work cycles for the diesel fuel and the tested mixture was calculated. Finally, exhaust toxic emission was analyzed. It was found that the pyrolysis oil can be used as valuable additive to regular diesel fuel at amount up to 10%, however, toxic exhaust gases emission was increased.

A Stirling cycle was developed by Rallis considering the adiabatic behaviour instead of isothermal behaviour of working fluid inside the expansion/compression volume, since the isothermal processes are very difficult to be realised in actual practice due to irreversibilities. In order to increase the performance of Rallis Stirling cycle engine, two modified versions of Rallis Stirling cycle engine model have been proposed and developed, called as Rallis modified Stirling cycle engine (RMSE). In this paper, the thermodynamic analysis of the developed models have been carried out and the simulated results are compared with the Rallis ideal model of Stirling cycle engine, as this model describes more accurately the thermodynamic cycle of practical Stirling machines. The results reveal the fact that the thermal efficiency of RMSE I model is enhanced by 38.06% and that of RMSE II model by 48.42%, whereas the power output is increased by 58.05% and 78.19% in case of RMSE I and RMSE II model respectively, when compared with the Rallis ideal adiabatic model of Stirling engine.

The paper discusses tests results of dual-fuel spark ignition engine with multipoint injection of alcohol and gasoline, injected in area of inlet valve. Fuelling of the engine was accomplished via prototype inlet system comprising duplex injectors controlled electronically. Implemented system enables feeding of the engine with gasoline only or alcohol only, and simultaneous combustion of a mixture of the both fuels with any fraction of alcohol. The tests were performed on four cylinders, spark ignition engine of Fiat 1100 MPI type. The paper presents comparative results of dual-fuel engine test when the engine runs on changing fraction of methyl alcohol. The tests have demonstrated an advantageous effect of alcohol additive on efficiency and TCH and NOx emission of the engine, especially in case of bigger shares of the alcohol and higher engine loads.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dwupaliwowego silnika o zapłonie iskrowym z wielopunktowym wtryskiem alkoholu i benzyny w okolice zaworu dolotowego. Zasilanie silnika realizowano przez prototypowy układ dolotowy zawierający podwójne wtryskiwacze sterowane elektronicznie. Zastosowany system umożliwia zasilanie silnika samą benzyną lub alkoholem oraz spalanie równoczesne mieszaniny obydwu paliw o dowolnym udziale alkoholu. Badania wykonano na 4-cylindrowym silniku o zapłonie iskrowym Fiat 1100 MPI. W artykule przedstawiono porównawcze wyniki badań sprawności i stężenia toksycznych składników spalin silnika zasilanego dwupaliwowo o zmiennym udziale alkoholu metylowego. Badania pokazały korzystny wpływ dodatku alkoholu na sprawność i ekologiczne własności silnika, szczególnie dla większych udziałów alkoholu i obciążeń silnika.

This paper presents a two-dimensional model of heat flow through structural elements of cylinder of two-stroke cross-head engine of longitudinal scavenging, obtained with the use of the elementary balance method. Special attention was paid to the modelling of temperature distribution within engine cylinder liner of "wet" construction. For modelling the unsteady heat flow multi-dimensional equations with Dirichlet - Fourier boundary conditions, were used. For the Fourier boundary conditions in the engine cylinder space local values of convective and radiant heat-transfer coefficients were applied. For calculations the KM3R method of solving differential equations, based on the elementary balance method, was used. Modelling results have been presented in the form of the temperature field of engine cylinder structural elements in function of the changeable angle of crankshaft position.

Within the article an issues of implementing the new kinds of marine diesel fuels into ships’ operation was described taking into account restrictions on the permissible sulphur content introduced by the International Maritime Organization. This is a new situation for ship owners and fuel producers, which forces the necessity to carry out laboratory research tests on especially adapted engine stands. How to elaborate the method enabling quality assessment of the self-ignition engine performance, considered in three categories: energy, emission and reliability, represents the key issue of the organization of such research. In the field of energy research, it is necessary to know the thermal efficiency of the engine as the basic comparative parameter applied in diagnostic analyzes and syntheses of sequentially tested marine diesel fuels. This type of scientific research has been worked out for two years in the Department of Marine and Land Power Plants of the Gdańsk University of Technology, as a part of the statutory activities conducted in cooperation with the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection in Gdansk and the LOTOS Group oil company. This article presents the algorithm and results of thermal efficiency calculations of the Farymann Diesel D10 test engine in the conditions of feeding with various low-sulfur marine diesel fuels: distillation and residual fuels. This parameters stands for one of ten diagnostic measures of the ranking of energy and emission quality of newly manufactured marine diesel fuels being built at the Department.

W artykule przedstawiono przebieg naprężeń termicznych na przylgni zaworu wylotowego w doładowanym silniku z zapłonem samoczynnym. Modelowanie obciążeń cieplnych przeprowadzono w oparciu o dwustrefowy model procesu spalania oraz metodę elementów skończonych MES w stanie nieustalonego przepływu ciepła. Obliczenia zostały wykonane dla modelu geometrycznego zaworu wylotowego silnika pięciocylindrowego o pojemności skokowej około 2300 cm3 z bezpośrednim wtryskiem paliwa do komory spalania i mocy znamionowej 85 kW.
The article presents the course of thermal stress in the exhaust valve face in a turbocharged diesel engine. Modelling of thermal loads are based on a two-zone model of the combustion process and the finite element method FEM unsteady state heat flow. The calculations were made using a geometrical model of the exhaust valve in a five-cylinder engine with a capacity of about 2300 cm3, with a direct fuel injection to the combustion chamber and a power rating of 85 kW.

In this paper was presented result of the mathematical modeling of the heat loads in the piston, cylinder sleeve, valves and valves-seats. In calculations used the two-zone combustion model [1] and finite elements method (FEM). Modeling was conducted by use of III kind of the boundary conditions. Moreover in the article were described individual preparation stages of the research object for the experimental verification of received the numerical results along with the concept of the measurements station.

Warunki pracy głowic silników można określić jako ciężkie ze względu na występujące obciążenia mechaniczne i cieplne. Istotnym czynnikiem jest również nierównomierność nagrzewania się głowic silników. Głowice silników ze względu na swój skomplikowany kształt są wykonywane w technologii odlewniczej a najczęściej stosowanymi stopami są żeliwa stopowe i siluminy. Konstrukcja głowicy zależy od przyjętego systemu spalania, usytuowania zaworów i wałka rozrządu oraz liczby zaworów przypadających na cylinder. Powierzchnia głowicy pomiędzy gniazdami zaworów należy do najbardziej obciążonych cieplnie miejsc głowicy. W pracy przedstawiono przyczyny uszkodzeń głowic silnika 4C90. Podano rezultaty badań metalograficznych. Lokalizacja pęknięć była związana z rozkładami temperatur i naprężeń. Obliczenia numeryczne rozkładów temperatur i naprężeń były wykonane za pomocą programu MES Abaqus Standard. Pęknięcia pojawiały się w miejscach występowania najwyższych temperatur i naprężeń. Zwykle powstaje kilka pęknięć, z których jedno formuje złom. Obliczenia numeryczne MES określają rejon mostka międzyzaworowego jako miejsce najbardziej narażone na uszkodzenie, w którym występuje największe naprężenie, około 250 MPa. Miejscem podatnym na pękanie jest również mostek pomiędzy zaworem wylotowym i wkładką żarową. Ze względu na występujące wartości naprężeń, można scharakteryzować mechanizm uszkadzania powierzchni ogniowej głowicy jako zmęczenie niskocyklowe. Obliczone wartości temperatury i naprężeń są w dobrej zgodności z opublikowanymi pracami. Wyniki badań eksperymentalnych potwierdzają rezultaty obliczeń numerycznych.
The work conditions of IC engines heads can be defined as heavy, considering the occurring mechanical and thermal loads. The essential factor is also inequality of warming of the engine heads. Considering their complicated shape, the heads of engines are manufactured in the casting process, and material most often applied is alloy iron or silicon aluminum alloy. The construction of head will depend of the assumed combustion system, valve and camshaft placement and the number of valves in the single cylinder. The head surface between the valve inserts is the most heavily thermally loaded head place. The paper reviews causes of failure to naturally aspirated 4C90 diesel engine heads. Results of metallographic examinations of scrapped engine heads are given. Locations of cracks were connected with stress and temperature distributions. Numerical analysis of temperatures and stresses developed in the engine head was performed by means of Abaqus Standard finite element program. Cracks origins appeared in regions of high temperature and stress levels. Usually a few cracks originated and one of them developed, forming fracture. Finite element method numerical calculations define inter-valve bridge region as the place most susceptible to the damage, in which the largest stresses, valued about 250 MPa are appearing. The place also susceptible on cracking is the bridge between exhaust valve and glow insert. Considering the values of stresses occurring, it is possible as to characterize the mechanism of the igneous head surface damage as a low cycle wear. The computed values of the temperature and the stresses are in the good conformability with values published in the literature. The results of experimental investigations confirm the results of numerical calculations.

The results of laboratory investigations of laser pad welding by stellite type 6 created on the base of alloy powders exhaust valves of ASz62IR piston aircraft engine have been presented in the paper AMI 3901. It was carried out investigations of resistance to oxidation and thermal shocks of laser modified valves. Investigations to oxidation and cyclic thermal shocks were carried out on the real valves with laser created stellite padding weld in the laboratory conditions. During first stage of investigations to heating of valves was used electrical furnace and to fast their cooling pressure air and water. In comparison with native material, those investigations were shown very big resistance tested stellite padding weld to cyclic thermal shocks as well as oxidation in high temperature (900°C). The corrosion resistance of austenic valve steel 4H14N14W2M which exhaust valve is made as well as stellite type 6 padding weld is clearly diverse.The layer pad welding by stelllite AMI 3901 has high value of corrosion current than native material, so they characterized higher resistance on the influence of corroding medium. In the second stage of investigations valves were exposed on the 400 hours durability test on the engine test bed. Next intensive oxidation of native material of old valves ASz62IR aircraft engine and mass decrement of valves in the high temperature can determinate circumstance to using new material to manufacturing of valves for example50H21G9N4 steel. Getting very positive results of investigations give basics of technological application in above -mentioned piston aircraft engine as well as another traction engines.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych zaworów wylotowych tłokowego silnika lotniczego samolotu ASz62IR napawanych laserowo stellitami typu 6 wytworzonymi na bazie proszków stopowych AMI 3901. Przeprowadzono badania odporności na utlenianie i szoki cieplne zmodyfikowanych laserowo zaworów. Badania odporności na utlenianie i cykliczne szoki cieplne przeprowadzono na rzeczywistych zaworach z wytworzonymi laserowo napoinami stellitowymi w warunkach laboratoryjnych. W pierwszym etapie badań do nagrzewania zaworów wykorzystano piec elektryczny, a do szybkiego ich chłodzenia sprężone powietrze oraz wodę. W porównaniu z materiałem rodzimym badania te wykazały bardzo dużą odporność badanej napoiny stellitowej na cykliczne szoki cieplne oraz utlenianie w wysokiej temperaturze (900°C). Odporność korozyjna austenitycznej stali zaworowej 4H14N14W2M z której wykonany jest zawór wydechowy oraz napoiny stellitowej typu 6 jest wyraźnie zróżnicowana. Warstwa napawana stellitem AMI 3901 posiada wyższą wartości prądu korozyjnego niż materiał rodzimy, tak więc charakteryzuje się większą odpornością na działanie środowiska korozyjnego.. W drugim etapie zawory poddane zostały 400h próbie trwałościowej na stanowisku hamownianym.. Z kolei intensywne utlenianie materiału rodzimego starych zaworów silnika lotniczego ASz62IR i ubytki masy zaworów w wysokiej temperaturze stanowić mogą przesłankę do zastosowania nowego materiału do produkcji zaworów np.: stali 50H21G9N4. Uzyskane bardzo pozytywne wyniki badań hamownianych dają podstawy wdrożenia technologicznego w ww. tłokowym silniku lotniczym oraz innych silnikach trakcyjnych.

Opis:
The propulsion system of a vehicle using an internal combustion engine generates a significant amount of waste heat during operation, which is almost entirely discharged into the environment without any useful effect. One of the ways of using waste heat is storing it, and then using, for example, when starting the engine in winter conditions. The application of the indicated solution, in particular for the combat vehicle will allow to reduce the effects of cold start and will shorten the time of preparing such a vehicle for combat operations. The article presents: types of heat accumulators that could be used in a military vehicle, the results of preliminary tests carried out on the test stand and the impact of an additional heat source on the time of heating the internal combustion engine and on emission of exhaust gas components.

Opis:
Exhaust gases from dual fuel engines are nearly smokeless, while maximal engine load is limited by allowable thermal load, not by smoke limit. This encourages users to enrich gas-air mixture, leading to increased output power of the engine, what partially compensates reduction of maximal output power connected with gaseous fuelling. Excessive enrichment of the charge, resulting from concentration of gas in the gas-air mixture and size of Diesel oil’s dose, can lead to a phenomenon of knocking combustion and thermal overloading, and in result – to serious damage of the engine. In the paper is presented a calculation methodology of maximal enrichment of the gaseous mixture, above which a thermal overloading of the engine can occur. On example of a breakdown of three dual fuel engines of Caterpillar 3516A and SW 680 type, effects of thermal overloading, and a hazards connected with excessive enrichment of the gaseous mixture are shown. Conclusions of a general nature can serve as a guide to selection of control systems to dual fuel engines.
Spaliny silników dwupaliwowych są prawie bezdymne, a maksymalne obciążenie silnika jest ograniczone dopuszczalnym obciążeniem cieplnym, a nie granicą dymienia. Skłania to użytkowników do wzbogacania mieszaniny gaz-powietrze prowadzącego do zwiększania mocy silnika, co częściowo kompensuje zmniejszenie mocy maksymalnej związane z gazowym zasilaniem. Nadmierne wzbogacanie ładunku, wynikające ze stężenia gazu w mieszaninie gaz-powietrze i wielkości dawki oleju napędowego, może prowadzić do zjawiska spalania stukowego i przeciążenia cieplnego, a w efekcie do poważnego uszkodzenia silnika. W pracy przedstawiono metodykę obliczania maksymalnego wzbogacania mieszaniny gazowej, powyżej którego mogą występować przeciążenia cieplne silnika. Na przykładzie trzech awarii silników dwupaliwowych Caterpillar 3516A i SW 680 pokazano skutki przeciążenia cieplnego silnika i niebezpieczeństwa związane z nadmiernym wzbogaceniem mieszaniny gazowej. Wnioski ogólne mogą być wskazówką do doboru sterowania silników dwupaliwowych.

Wstęp i cele: W pracy opisano obieg termodynamiczny silnika cieplnego, Carnota, chłodziarki i pompy grzejnej, Ponadto przedstawiono sprawność termiczną obiegu silnika oraz sprawność energetyczną obiegu chłodniczego i obiegu grzejnego. Omówiono różne sformułowania drugiej zasady termodynamiki. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie graficzne obiegów termodynamicznych silnika, chłodziarki i pompy grzejnej oraz analiza teoretyczna sprawność energetycznej omawianych obiegów termodynamicznych. Materiał i metody: Materiał stanowią źródła z literatury z zakresu termodynamiki. W pracy zastosowano metodę analizy teoretycznej. Wyniki: Rezultatem pracy jest przedstawienie graficzne i omówienie obiegów termodynamicznych silnika cieplnego, chłodziarki i pompy grzejnej. Ponadto w pracy przestawiono analizę teoretyczną sprawności termicznej obiegu silnika, sprawności energetycznej obiegu chłodniczego i grzejnego. Wniosek: Aby zrealizować obieg silnika nie wystarczy tylko dostarczać ciepło, lecz konieczne jest też odprowadzanie ciepła. Obieg chłodniczy lub obieg grzejny jest lewobieżny i może składać się z równych przemian termodynamicznych. Sprawność termiczna silnika może być zwiększona poprzez podniesienie temperatury ciepła doprowadzanego i obniżenie temperatury ciepła odprowadzanego.
Introduction and aim: The paper describes the thermodynamic cycle of the heat engine, Carnot, refrigeration and transient pump. In addition, the thermal efficiency of the motor cycle and the energy efficiency of the refrigeration cycle and heating circuit have been presented. Different definitions of the second law of thermodynamics have been discussed. The aim of this paper is graphic representation of thermodynamic cycles of the engine, refrigerator and heating pump as well as theoretical analysis of energy efficiency of the discussed thermodynamic cycles. Material and methods: Material covers some sources based on the literature in the field of thermodynamics. The method of theoretical analysis has been shown in the paper. Results: The result of the work is a graphic representation and discussion of the thermodynamic cycles of the heat engine, the refrigerator and the heating pump. In addition, the work presents the thermodynamic analysis of the thermal efficiency of the motor cycle, the energy efficiency of the cooling and heating circuits. Conclusion: In order to realize the motor cycle, it will not only provide heat, but also heat removal. The refrigeration circuit or heating circuit is left-handed and may consist of even thermodynamic transformations. The thermal efficiency of the motor can be increased by raising the temperature of the heat supplied and reducing the temperature of the heat dissipated.
