Opis:
Students' and teachers’ attitudes towards English as a lingua franca (ELF) have been a fertile research area in recent years. Nevertheless, Polish in-service teachers' views have been neglected. The present study addresses this gap in research and examines the beliefs and attitudes held by a group of eighty Polish in-service teachers towards ELF. The participants completed a survey that consisted of quantitative and qualitative questions. The data were analysed using both statistical and thematic analysis. The results obtained in the study suggest that teachers' awareness and views on ELF are rather negative and distrustful. They mostly see ELF as a useful and necessary concept, yet continue recognising native pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary models as their teaching goals. The data also suggest that a gap in teacher education programmes exists as the respondents either do not know or do not believe that Outer Circle Englishes are legitimate native varieties. Teachers also retain stereotypical views on Polish and native accents, perceiving the latter positively and the former negatively. This paper strongly suggests that teacher education programmes in Poland should ensure students and future teachers are aware of developments in the field of English Language Teaching.

This paper attempts to highlight the significant multidimensional role of teachers of English as a foreign language in conducting language assessment in the process of teaching. The study presented in the article aimed to investigate school and university EFL teachers’ (n=87) beliefs about the place of assessment in their teaching practice and their role as assessors. The findings indicated that classroom assessment, though appreciated by the study participants, posed a major challenge to them.

The presented study examined the relationship between teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and their experience of burnout. Its participants were 230 schoolteachers from fourteen Slovenian primary schools. The Questionnaire of Teacher Pedagogical Beliefs and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey were applied. The findings suggest pedagogical beliefs as predictors of teacher burnout dimensions. Teachers’ negative pedagogical beliefs about students’ behavior and discipline maintenance are related to a greater experience of emotional exhaustion whilst negative beliefs about teachers’ trust in students and the role and responsibility of the teacher are related to a greater experience of depersonalization and decreases in personal accomplishment.

Theoretical framework within which this paper is set is the conception of teachers’ epistemological beliefs. The author’s attention is focused on the classification of teachers’ beliefs in the realistic, contextual and relativistic approach. The question that permeates this study is whether the teacher’s beliefs are consistent with their work in practice. A questionnaire was made for the purpose of the research and the sample encompasses 420 teachers in Serbia. Results show that the subjects mostly estimate that they belong to a constructivist profile. However, their answers indicate that their acting is different from their self-assessment. Research findings imply a need for an awakening of teachers with regards to personal epistemologies.

Despite the lack of documented differences in the intensity of creative abilities between women and men, the observed disproportion between men and women in terms of creative achievements may result from different socialization and education paths of boys and girls. The purpose of the article is to compare teachers’ beliefs about the characteristics of a creative boy and a creative girl. 128 experienced kindergarten and elementary school teachers were involved in the study. The research results showed a significant diversity of teachers’ beliefs about the characteristics of girls and boys in terms of creativity. While the surveyed teachers did not notice differences in the ingenuity and originality of boys and girls (t = 0.96; p > 0.05; d = 0.08), in their opinion, a creative girl was perceived as significantly more conscientious (t = 7.03; p < 0.05; d = 0.62) and subordinated to the expectations of other people (t = 4.34; p < 0.05; d = 0.38) than a creative boy. The revealed differences were analyzed theoretically (theories of creativity, socio-cultural concepts of gender).

Violent acts motivated by extreme interpretations of ideologies (right-wing, left-wing, religions, etc.) catch a lot of attention and cause serious deep emotions such as fear, hate, uncertainty, support polarization of society, and stigmatization of certain people, things, and societal groups. However, little attention has been given to how educators have addressed issues of violent radicalisation, extremism and terrorism with their students. According to Vallinkoski et al., 2021 as schools are one of the primary settings where most children spend their time, educators are needed to help children foster these (critical media reading and interpreting skills) skills to support students in understanding the reasons behind and aftermath of extremist events. This article gives overview of the results of a pilot study focusing on Estonian educators' experiences with discussing and tackling extremism in a classroom. The study examines educators' experiences in discussing topics related to extremism with students and colleagues and an overview of topics that students have raised. It also answers whether educators self-censorship themselves in discussing topics related to extremism and if so, what are the reasons for doing that. The study's questionnaire is created based on a similar study conducted in Finland by Vallinkoski, Koirikivi and Malkki (2021) with the permission of the authors and with adaptions for the Estonian context. The study results show that Estonian teachers discuss the extremism-related context in classroom by their and students' initiative. While doing it, they face difficulties in defining 'extremism', understanding how to interpret the students reactions and ideas, and when to contact further counterparts.

Science teachers communicate curricula goals to their students, prepare teaching situations and lead their students through them in order to learn science. The purpose of this study was to identify the beliefs of teachers about teaching and learning, specifically, what the teachers focus on, how they comprehend knowledge and their role in the process of learning since they can promote or hold back development of scientific literacy. Q methodology was used to investigate the beliefs of 65 science teachers by having them rank and sort a series of 51 statements. Factor analysis was used to identify identical patterns. The analysis showed that the teachers held four types of dominant beliefs about the effectiveness of science instruction and some common feature which have potential to influence educational process. Teachers concentrate on covering the content even if they declare the importance of personal construction, feel responsible for students’ learning and its outcomes. Despite stressing the activity of the students, the teachers did not emphasize particular science process skills and scaffolding process. The findings of the study suggest that systematic trainings focused on the nature of science and the scaffolding process would be beneficial for teachers in all identified factors.

Opis:
As of 2021, in Poland there are hardly any University courses preparing pre-service teachers to teach groups of the age of 60 and older. However, at the same time, it is estimated that in Poland older adults represent approximately 24% of the population and it is expected to increase to 40.4% by 2050. The number of private language centres and Universities of the Third Age (U3A) offering, among other subjects, foreign language education, is also constantly growing. In order to examine the value of introducing “Foreign Language Geragogy” (FLG, i.e. teaching foreign languages to older adults) to the curriculum, a qualitative study of forty two MA students from the Institute of English Studies (University of Wrocław) was carried out. Only half of the respondents attended the elective course and MA seminar “Older adults and SLA”, but both groups completed the same open-ended questionnaire, the aim of which was to explore pre-service teachers’ subjective theories regarding older adults’ motivation to learn foreign languages in later life, and to examine the extent to which they were affected by the content of the course. The results suggest that such courses are valuable, and pre-service teachers’ opinions regarding foreign language learning and teaching to older adults should be challenged in order to offer a better quality of teaching and to promote the idea of lifelong learning.

Opis:
The current transformation of various areas of life in Poland contribute to many changes in the educational system of young children. Recently proposed and implemented changes in early school education concern the school system and are mainly related to the modification of the structure, organization, and functioning of schools. However, at the basis of education, there lie primarily defined educational paradigms. Awareness of them affects not only the way of thinking of teachers about the nature of education, the role of a teacher and a student in the educational process, but most of all are reflected in the school practice. Hence, in the context of the currently ongoing reform of early school education, the subject of research has focused on educational ideologies that determine the way of thinking of teachers about early school education and the role of its participants. The analysis presented in the following article has been based on empirical data based on individual surveys, which were conducted with early school education teachers during pedagogical practices completed by female students of postgraduate studies in early school education.
Obecne przeobrażenia różnych dziedzin życia w Polsce przyczyniają się do wielu zmian w systemie edukacji małego dziecka. Proponowane i wprowadzane w ostatnim czasie zmiany w edukacji wczesnoszkolnej dotyczą ustroju szkolnego i związane są głównie z modyfikacją struktury, organizacji i funkcjonowania szkół. Stąd, w kontekście zachodzących aktualnie reform systemu edukacji wczesnoszkolnej, przedmiotem badań uczyniono ideologie edukacyjne determinujące sposób myślenia nauczycieli o edukacji wczesnoszkolnej i roli jej uczestników.

The aim of the current study is to examine the relationship between the pedagogical beliefs of teachers and their profession and to examine how this relationship affects teachers’ self-efficacy perception, satisfaction, and other functional characteristics of the teacher within the educational system. More specifically, the study seeks to compare the pedagogical beliefs of Muslim teachers who teach Religion subjects (i.e. Islamic studies) and the pedagogical beliefs of teachers of secular studies (i.e. Mathematics). According to the proposed research model, the teaching profession (that is, teaching religious Islam or teaching Mathematics) divergently affects the nature of teachers’ pedagogical beliefs, through which they function and perceive their role as teachers. The focus of our study is Arab teachers of Islam versus Arab mathematics teachers, who reflect traditional pedagogical beliefs on two levels, first by selecting teachers belonging to the Muslim minority in Israel, but also in the context of the distinction between teaching. The study hypothesis suggests that there is a difference between the pedagogical beliefs of teachers of Islamic studies and the pedagogical beliefs of Mathematics teachers. In particular, it seeks to examine the claim that teachers of Islamic studies will have a strong traditional belief and weaker constructive belief compared to teachers of secular studies. This research hypothesis has not been confirmed. In fact, except in terms of teachers’ satisfaction, no differences between the two types of teachers were found. This might indicate a change in the Arab society which deviates from the traditional Islamic halakhic approach that focuses almost entirely on religious studies and adopts a more modernized and liberal educational approach, centered on a Western education model and secularism.

Opis:
New challenges generated for teacher education in the context of dynamic changes in socio-cultural and technological reality are putting the issues of the teacher's professionalism in a new light. The purpose of this study is an attempt to reconstruct ways of understanding the professionalism of an early education teacher and its dimensions from the perspective of pre-service teachers. The concept of research is based on the assumption that starting education by reconstructing the common beliefs of the candidates for teachers about selected areas of education plays a key role in the constructivist-oriented teacher education. Revealing ways to conceptualize and assess the professionalism of early education teachers by those who begin pedagogical studies allows for planning ways of using their common knowledge on this subject and to predict directions of their studies. The text is based on a qualitative analysis of written statements by students starting studies in the area of pre-school and early school education. Obtained research results that indicate a dominating perception of the professionalism of the teacher working with children at the early school age allow to determine the necessary directions of changes in the education of future teachers. This perception visible in teachers’ statements are instrumental, “closed” and based on a selected teaching paradigm.
Nowe wyzwania generowane pod adresem edukacji nauczycielskiej w kontekście dynamicznych zmian rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej i technologicznej stawiają w coraz to nowym świetle kwestie profesjonalizmu nauczyciela.

This paper reports on a study investigating the mindsets of 51 pre-service teachers at an Austrian university using Q methodology. Despite the recent growth in interest in the concept of mindsets, little research has addressed the mindsets of teachers – most of it focusing on the mindsets of learners – and the research that does investigate teachers tends to focus on beliefs about learning or intelligence. This study offers a new perspective by focusing on teachers’ beliefs about their own teaching competences. A further aim of the study is to expand the methodological repertoire in language education researchers. This study considers the potential of Q methodology, a research approach used widely in social sciences and education, but, as yet, rare in this field. The data indicate that the most common mindset among the pre-service teachers is one based around a strong belief in the learnability of the more technical aspects of teaching, while interpersonal skills tend to be regarded as more of a natural talent fixed within the individual. One practical implication of this finding is that teacher education programmes may need to pay more attention to explicitly developing the interpersonal side of teaching. A further finding was that teacher mindsets are constructed through individuals’ management of various sets of implicit theories and tend not to conform to the established dichotomous model of mindsets.

The qualitative study presented in this paper aimed to collect beliefs about learning and teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) from individual representatives of the generation frequently referred to as the millennials. The participants were 47 pre-service EFL trainee teachers from four socio-cultural contexts: Finnish, Israeli, Polish, and Spanish. Their voices have been considered because beliefs are dynamically related to actions and soon the millennial EFL teachers may implement them in the course of their teaching. The contextual approach, followed in this research, provided opportunities for discussing similarities and differences in the beliefs of Finnish, Israeli, Polish, and Spanish pre-service teachers. The identified similarities lead to outlining a tentative picture of a universal, future, post-pandemic EFL classroom.

Mathematics-related beliefs play an important role in giving a teacher directions for taking decisions and for their behavior in a mathematics class. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to reveal the profile of teachers’ mathemat- ics-related beliefs, the consistency among belief dimensions, teachers’ practical profile in a mathematics class, and the consistency between beliefs and teachers’ practices in a mathematics class. This research used surveys with a cross-sec- tional design to collect data from 325 elementary school teachers in Jakarta. Teachers’ beliefs instruments and teachers’ practices in mathematics class were used to collect data. The findings of this research indicate that teachers tend to be constructivism-oriented but are not accompanied with suitable practices in mathematics class. Moreover, complex relationships also occur in both belief dimensions and in their relationships with the practices in a mathematics class.
