Opis:
This article concerns two problems. The first is baptismal symbolism, and the second liturgical mystagogy understood as a constant initiation of the faithful into the understanding of the faith. Hence, the first part shows the assumptions of contemporary liturgical mystagogy, which calls for an appropriate approach to the baptism of children on the part of both pastors and parents. The baptismal rites, rich in symbolism, can be helpful in this respect. The second part of the paper provides an explanation of baptismal symbolism. It discusses the importance of baptism, the presence of the community, the questioning of the parents and the godparents, the significance of the church door, the name of the child, the sign of the cross, the procession to the chancel, the exorcism, the blessing of water, the renunciation of evil, the profession of faith, the matter and form of the sacrament, the anointing with chrism, the putting on of a white garment, the giving of a lighted candle and the procession to the altar.

The paper examines a special place that the characters of Ophelia and Narcissus, so closely connected with the motif of water, occupy in the poetic imaginarium of George Rodenbach. What we deal with here is an unhealthy obsession within which two characters of literature and mythology, unhappily in love, are presented as two alter egos of the poet himself. An endless sequence of images associating water with death reveals the fascination and trepidation of the symbolist, who uses the Opheliac depths and Narcissus’s water mirror as a reflection of different states of his soul.

An intentional and significant palette : colour symbolism in some of Emile Zola’s novels In naturalist novels, aiming to depict the reality as faithfully as possible, colours are particularly important, and need to be carefully selected. An attentive reader of Zola’s Rougon-Macquart series might notice a very special use of colours that are often charged with an important symbolic value: being not only an ornament or a detail, they frequently influence and/or express the characters’ features. The proposed classification shows some most relevant examples of Zola’s conception of colours in selected parts of the series.

Strawberries were the fruit that the Modernists and Modernism were very fond of. It thus should not be a surprise that strawberries also feature in Modernist prose texts of Katherine Mansfield. Although they make their appearance only in a couple of stories, and then merely for a brief moment, they should not by any means be treated as mere tiny blots belonging to the background. For when we take a closer look at them it turns out that, as is usually the case with Mansfield’s short stories, there is more to it than meets the eye. Seemingly unimportant, often unnoticed and therefore frequently underestimated, this small, sweet, red and fragrant fruit makes a significant statement in every text it is mentioned.

Opis:
The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) was the third film made by an Italian intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini. After many scandals and court trials which concerned seditious character of his earlier shortmovie La ricotta (making part of Ro.Go.Pa.G., 1963), he decided to dedicate his new film to the history of Christ, choosing the text of The Gospel According to St. Matthew, naming it the one which in the best way represents the human nature of Christ and his „being a man among men”. The film he made is an interesting work of art because of many reasons: it was filmed in the area of the South of Italy, it’s maintained in the neorealism aesthetics, and thanks to the actors who starred in the film (one of the Apostles was played by Giorgio Agamben, an Italian philosopher, Jesus was played by a Spanish student, a strong follower of communism and Mary was played by Pasolini’s own mother – Susanna). Nevertheless, The Gospel According to St. Matthew, among other Pasolini’s film, has the most complex and refined soundtrack list, because, this time, the music is the element which plays the major role in the film, being the factor of the stylistic contamination he applied in his works. The story of Christ is portrayed by unusual music choices such as Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by Odetta Williams, Gloria from the Kongo mass Missa Luba, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky and others. Thus, it is important to have a closer look at the film’s music, and by decoding the intertextual figures such as quotations and allusions, try to understand its narrative symbolism and hidden, autobiographical motives created by Pasolini.

The study deals with political propaganda considered as a space for the performance of rituals and ritual behaviours. Such an approach allows for investigating that phenomenon from another perspective than so far proposed by classical propaganda research schools. Special categories of the analysis include the symbolic sphere and conventionality, while emphasis is placed on researching propaganda within politically significant structures. The article provides information on how the phenomenon has been analysed with the use of anthropological research categories.

Opis:
This article undertakes the topic of the evolution in perceiving the ideal of literary musicality among representatives of French symbolism, taking into account Baudelaire and Mallarmé. The former, who is considered to be the precursor of symbolism, used prosody and combined the arts and music to convey the metaphor of painting and poetry. On the other hand, in Mallarmé’s oeuvre, it is poetry that moves closer to music on the level of form. Next, the utilization of the acoustic aspect of text, which is characteristic of Verlaine, is degraded in René Ghil’s artificial system of verbal instrumentation. The work of Villiers de l’Isle Adam and Jules Laforgue shows that music-related topics are gradually set aside and the music theme is softened and gives way to silence. Silence itself is the best way that presents Mallarmé’s ideal of musicality as a silent concert that resonates in the reader’s mind.
Artykuł podejmuje temat ewolucji w postrzeganiu ideału literackiej muzyczności wśród przedstawicieli francuskiego symbolizmu koncentrując uwagę zwłaszcza twórczość Baudelaire’a i Mallarmégo.

Opis:
Sixtine by Remy de Gourmont marks the refusal of nature and tangible reality and the choice of imagination to the detriment of reality. Its principal character, Hubert d’Entragues is a faithful disciple of idealism of symbolism. Since he chooses to think rather that to live, it is not surprising that the plot of the novel is almost nonexistent. The plot develops around of d’Entragues’ desire to win the beautiful Sixtine, which is in itself condemned to failure since he is doing nothing to reach her and refuses to take any effort. The woman, who could have served as the principal impulse of the plot, is practically inexistent in this story (though it is a passionate story) and is replaced by the ideal woman: the story is doubled by the second story, e.g. a novel written by the character which is a transposition of his “cerebral” relation with Sixtine and a realisation of presence of the latter. Art replaces life and life does not exist in itself. It is shaped by thought. But the chosen absence of any facts of life is fruitful: it gives birth to a novel. It is a story of a prisoner in love with the statute of the Virgin which he sees while taking a daily walk. In this novel the carnal accomplishment is not necessary in order for a true and sincere passion to develop and the satisfaction of desire may destroy the dream and the ideal.

The author focuses her attention on the aspects of folk rituals using hair, including the symbolic meaning of manipulation of hair, such as combing, pinning and cutting. In addition to determining social status, the important role in the ritual’s calendar and family life, hair has been associated with broadly understood symbolism and various meanings. The purpose of the text is to also show the relationship between the belief function and the appearance of the hair and the actions by which they are affected.

The cathedral represented in the examined works becomes a symbol of the need of the human soul to free oneself from the body and fly up to heaven. The crypt is considered a space of self-reflection and refuge.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the ways in which religious symbols are present in non-religious spheres of contemporary European culture. It is widely known that, as a result of secularization, religious symbolic language is no longer present in the public sphere and culture of contemporary European societies in the same way as it was in the past. At first sight, it seems that it has lost its relevance for other fields of culture as well as for everyday communication, and that religion has become a relatively closed system of communication. However, more thorough investigation shows that various religious symbols are widely used in many fields of secular culture. The fundamental question concerning religious symbols is whether and, if yes, in what particular way, they change their meaning as a result of being used in non-religious cultural activity. What is the reason that previously marginalized religious symbols reappear in secular culture? It may be hypothesized that religious symbols are not culturally contingent, but they constitute a universal dimension of culture and are deeply rooted in the human mind.

Policies are not only being expressed by symbols and rituals, but their transmission and the use are being shaped by symbolic meanings. They teach how to understand world, putting it in order and help to overcome feeling of the chaos. To a large extent a so-called political reality is being created by symbolic meanings, even if it is hard for us to be reconciled with it. With the help of the appropriate selected set of multi-sensual, dramatic measures the political ritual allows more or less to capture participants and shape social imagination according to intentions of his organizers. Reconstructing or confirming existing political order the official ceremony with its performative nature tries with similar power as the ritual to involve its participants, seeks to generate feeling and images preferred by the authority. 10 January 1920, in accordance with provisions of the Treaty of Versailles the Republic of Poland took back Pomerania (annexed by Kingdom of Prussia in 1772 during First Partition of Poland). According to this, the special celebration was organized on the Puck Bay one month later. An episode with throwing the platinum ring into waters of the Baltic, called Poland’s Wedding to the Sea became soon the most important event in the great national story about the return of Pomerania to the motherland. It established the paradigmatic pattern for another state celebrations, which confirmed the northern boundary of Poland symbolically and state’s territorial integrity. Events in 1945 and 2010 were the variants of Poland’s Wedding to the Sea settled in their own historical context. On the one hand these ceremonies served as performative instruments for national legitimization of the power, but on the other hand they were used by political elites for creating and playing their own, different vision of the state.

The article deals with national and transnational symbolism of birds in the sphere of the soul in Polish folk culture against the Slavic background. The study aims to observe the variety of the imagery in the post-mortal existence of souls and their relation with the living. The analysis shows that there are cultural differences on the level of bird species. The symbolic meanings of birds are based on the characteristics of their species (the size, appearance, lifestyle, colour of plumage, nesting place) and the cultural context (both inherited and developed locally).

The Christian and rabbinic concept of the city asserts a symbolic dimension of the city derived fundamentally from the theological themes of the Hebrew Bible, which redefined the symbolism of the city compared to that of the neighboring nations. The concept of the city in the Bible extends from the synonym of a place that concentrates in itself all the evil (e.g. Gn 19,20-32; Is 1,9-10; Jr 19,13), to a place with the status of special holiness (e.g. 2S 20,19; Is 62,10-12; Tb 13,10) or identified with God’s special protection (e.g. 2K 19,34; 20,6; Is 37,31-35; 38,6; Mi 4,7-8; Dn 3,28).The transformation of this theme in the present article is analyzed through the occurrence of the Hebrew term 1'l1. Since in the rhetorical perspective it is assumed that the occurrence ofa particular word is not incidental but points the reader to the message of the text, the tracing of occurrence of the term 1'l1, might be helpful in understanding the development of the theological meaning of the concept of the city.

The author attempts to demonstrate that the poem "Eliasz" by Bolesław Leśmian has cognitive character. She devotes a lot of attention to the connections between Leśmian poetry and realistic symbolism. Part of the article concerns the poet’s description of the netherworld. Furthermore, it inquires whether the poem accomplishes the ultimate pursuit of poetry – remaining open to one true reality, free of individualism and intellectual constraints. Eventually, the interpretation demonstrates how, through a detached protagonist – "Eliasz", Leśmian begins to doubt the power of poetry to bring one back to primeval cognitive context, to such state of mind where reality is experienced directly through intuition and imagination.

The Polish translation of Verlaine’s Art poétique marks an important step in the process of acquisition of symbolism as a new paradigm of poetic creation. The analysis presented in this paper puts in the limelight the problem of positioning the translated text in the receptive literary system. The analytic proposal implies the employment of the term “embeddedness,” originally introduced by the historian Karl Polanyi, to render the implication of the non-economic factors in the process of production. Analogically, the production of literary texts is conditioned by factors situated at the frontier of literature. Those wishing to adopt a foreign aesthetics must vanquish the resistance of the local, traditionalist context. As a result, the translation is “embedded” as a manifesto, even if Verlaine’s Art poétique is a parody of the genre and an expression of the poet’s creative doubts rather than a truly prescriptive text. The auto-ironic dimension of the original poem disappears in the Polish translation by Miriam, which becomes a rigorous ars poetica.

The goal of the present paper is to establish to what degree physical attributes can explain the use of colour epithets; and if they cannot, then whether there is any reason to believe that there existed in the past a more elaborate system of colour symbolism.

Opis:
The book Twórczość Leśmiana w kręgu filozoficznej myśli symbolizmu rosyjskiego written by Sobieska is a pioneering attempt at combining a discussion on the literary output of the author of Dziejba leśna with the reflection stemming from the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The book, notwithstanding its shortcomings and self-imposed limitations, comprehensively discusses views and opinions hitherto unknown to the Polish reader, introduces and explains the context of the findings of such thinkers as Soloviov or Biely, compares texts written by Russian symbolists with Leśmian’s poems. Sobieska categorizes the problem issues into subsequent thematic ranges (epiphany insight into the nature of being, musicality and the notion of poetical metre, creative imagination, mystical femininity) in order to point at potential sources of the recontextualization of Leśmian’s poetical sensitivity. The findings, being an example of classic comparatistic studies, have been enhanced by iconological and musicological observations as well as by some additional guiding elements facilitating the understanding of Orthodox theology. The present sketch discusses the book and is complemented with a polemics with some of its methodological solutions.

In the early decades of the twentieth century the misogynist philosophical conceptions proposed by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Weininger exerted a particular influence upon the image of woman. In the literary output of Leśmian this phenomenon takes on the form decidedly divergent from the patterns prevalent at the time manifesting in the typical features of archetypal and mythical figures. In the construction of his literary lovers, Leśmian makes references to ritual symbolism. His almost hieratic female figures, notionally available to woman, guide the way in a possible passage between the beyond (spiritual world) and the world of mortals. The poet accentuates the analogies between the sacredness of woman and the sacrum of Tellus Mater and adopts the at- titude of a neophyte who endows women with the power of initiation into the mystery of regeneration. The notional female figures created by Leśmian, with the typical for the poet positive and exhilarating valorization of woman’s body, have the power of euphemising thanatical fears and anxiety. Leśmian treats the corporeal nature of woman as hierophany: a female, revealing the sacral character of the universe, forms and contributes to its spiritual order. Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Weininger demythologize the phenomenon of femininity, Leśmian remythologizes it back again.

Town halls have always been the best example of the aspirations and possibilities of urban communities. The location of the town hall building was related to its central role in the political system and functioning of the town. This was the case, irrespective of the period in which the building was raised, or its size. Its functional and ideological centrality in the urban space was achieved in several ways. The first, dating back to the ancient tradition, is associated with the classical structure of a city based on a rectilinear grid of streets – the town hall takes the place of the Roman praetorium, which was in the castrum at the intersection of the cardo and decumanus. This was not only the case in cities in the Apennine Peninsula, but also in colonized areas – in the towns established on the former sites of Roman camps. If the town hall building was part of a densely developed area, its form always distinguished it from the other buildings, and if it was a free-standing building, it competed with the church buildings with regards to its shape and location. Another way of emphasizing the central role of the main municipal building in the urban layout was to make it the main vertical accent, by accentuating its height with regard to the church towers – as in the solutions associated with the Flemish idea of the beffroi. The third important aspect regarding the spatial composition of medieval cities was the location of the town hall building in close relation to the “dynamic” diagonal axis of the town’s layout linking the town hall with the cathedral or parish church. This kind of layout can be found both on the Apennine Peninsula and in Silesia. The signifi cant analogies, which are visible at first glance, between the functioning of various town hall buildings in various geographical regions far away from one another, confirm the appropriateness of undertaking further research on the various groups of buildings in urban layouts both in the context of contemporary ideas and archetypes that had an influence throughout the whole of Europe, which in this context appears to be a culturally homogenous area.

The symbolic dimension of mineral paradise in Sand’s vision is the focus of reflection. The vision stems partly from the romantic anti-materialistic concepts, and partly seems to be the expression of the preoccupations with the material and the oriental both of the epoch and of the author of Laura... herself.

The symbolism of flowers has always been a significant part of cultures around the world due to their functional meaning in daily life. From their decorative to their aromatic role, flowers and their symbolic meaning trigger emotions, convey wishes and represent thoughts that can not be explicitly expressed. In this regard, an elaborate language based on flower symbolism was developed in many societies, to convey clear messages to the recipient. However, in some cultural contexts, although the flower symbolism has social connotations, it is mainly associated with economic references. As flowers are an essential precursor to fruits, they are inevitably a source of expectations and hence foster a set of hopes and dreams, which can ultimately lead to excitement or disappointment.Through a discourse analysis based on factional narratives, this article explores the parameters through which the symbolism of bifaceted meaning of flowers fictionalises a space that refers to the social reality. This association between the fictional world and social reference has highlighted that writing can profoundly be a means of representing social events through the rhetoric of symbolism. Through a sociological reading approach, this paper aims to analyse how the symbolism of flowers informs the rhetoric of disenchantment that can foster a content-based pedagogy in language learning where silencing practices engender imagery to exercise the freedom of expression.

Because of its clearly and doctrinal purpose, the problem of the garb could not be left to chance; in fact, it ended up giving rise to acrimonious quarrels between the monks, such as the chromatic controversy (black vs. white) which opposed, during the 12th Century, two French abbeys, Cluny and Citeaux, on topics not only theological, but also aesthetic. Soon it became essential to establish clear rules and policy on the choice of colour and appropriate tone to the religious lifestyle. Obviously, countless were considerations about the cut, the length of the habit, the style of the hood and, of course, the colour

Water is also regarded as one of God’s favors on His servants. There are numerous Koranic verses relating water as a vehicle of penalty both in the wordly life and in the hereafter. In the Koranic eschatological descriptions, it also appears as God’s reward for believers in paradise.

The first short story in the volume Mondo and Other Stories serves as a model for the other stories in the collection in terms of the themes, the representation of the child’s portrait and the stylistic peculiarities of the text. More exactly, the story describes the world of “children seen as kings” (Brée, 1990: 100) where everything is dominated by goodness, purity, beauty and magic. As the reference to Sinbad the Sailor at the beginning of the book suggests, the story depicts a moving journey in pursuit of a dream. This is the journey of a child who, refusing the adult world from which he feels alienated, is in search of himself and the unknown. As an image of the viator child, can we consider Mondo a new type of vagabond? Why is he emblematic of the author’s fictional universe and of universal literature? By answering these questions, the purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the originality and uniqueness of Le Clézio’s writing.

Leviticus is a book that presents multiple layers of meaning. In this article the Book of Leviticus was considered from the Religionswissenschaft point of view. The text was divided on a major blocks according to its theme, and then asked what message was delivered through each one of them; and subsequently, what was message of the whole Book. Careful analysis of vocabulary, as well as the time and place of action, allow to suggest a new structure - the four final chapters might serve as the endings for three blocks of text. The theme leads the reader from the temple to the community; from the present to the future.

When he writes about how pure and beautiful Helena Beatus is, he uses metaphors such as: black dove, black iris, dark cloud, dark corridor. It shows how pessimistic about the future and how guilty about the love he felt Antoni Szandlerowski was. The internal conflict was caused by the will to fulfil as a lover and the duty to continue priestly services. Antoni Szandlerowski is full of doubts. He misses Helena Beatus and feels that he cannot be happy without her. On the other hand, he knows that they cannot make their desire to live side by side real. Since the world is a place of pain and misery where the love cannot thrive due to social norms, lovers can bind together only after death. This way of thinking led Szandlerowski to many neurological disorders, caused nightmares and a painful impression that the whole world around fades away. Szandlerowski uses symbols such as a black dove and a black iris to describe his beloved one and to show the dichotomy of his perception. Therefore love is the source of all the pain and suffering for him.

The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 62, issue 4 (2014). In a wealth of votive gifts, the wax ones undoubtedly deserve special attention. They were common as early as in the Middle Ages, and they were used until the 20th century. There was a variety of such votive offerings, starting with candles, through lumps of wax, and ending with full-scale wax figures that started being used as a votive gesture at the break of the 13th and 14th centuries in the north of Europe. In the 15th and 16th centuries this custom became popular among the wealthy German, Austrian and Italian noblemen. Making wax votive figures took a lot of skill so they were made by specially qualified artists (in Italy wax figures called Boti were produced by sculptors called Cerajuoli or Fallimagini). Religious orders collaborated with the artists-artisans, undertaking to supply wax, whereas the artisans prepared wooden frames, natural hair, glass eyes, paints, textiles and brocade. In the following centuries, the production of wax figures developed ever more dynamically, especially in the north of Europe, with less skilled wax modellers, artisans and gingerbread makers often being their producers. The latter ones mainly made smaller wax figures, cast or squeezed from two-part concave models (this type of items in their form and type reminded of figures made of gingerbread). Wax votive figures (especially of children aged three to 12) funded in the area of Upper and Lower Franconia (the Bamberg and Würzburg dioceses) from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century are a separate and rather unusual phenomenon. Popularity of this votive offering became stable about 1880, in the years 1900–1910 it reached its climax; and in the 1950s it came to an end. Franconian offerings were always constructed in a similar way: they had wax faces and hands (more rarely feet), and the other members were made of wood, metal and some other padding materials. Dolls were a dominating model for the production of these votes, and that is why, like dolls, they had wigs made of natural hair on their heads, glass eyes and open mouths. A very important role was played by clothing, in which figures were willingly dressed; they were children’s natural, real clothes (girls were often dressed in the First Communion dresses); moreover, the effigies had complete clothing, which means they had genuine underwear, tights, leather shoes. The figures were supplied with rosaries and bouquets held in their hands, and on the heads of girls there were garlands. The figures were put in cabinets and glass cases, sometimes with wallpaper on the back wall, and they had a longer text on the front glass with the name of the child, or possibly of its parents, and the time when the figure was offered. Despite the many features making the Franconian offering deposits different from votive figures from other regions, all these items are joined by a timeless and universal idea, in which—to quote H. Belting—“an artificial body has assumed the religious representation of a living body…”

The article presents interpretations of poems by Bolesław Leśmian, where a motif of the forest can be found. Initially, the forest in Leśmian's poetry appears as symbolism of spiritual states: melancholy, longing and sadness, which are the characteristic features of the Young Poland poetry, which was primarily patronized by Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer. Then, in the poems from Orchard, he announces the project of a union of human and nature and a turn towards the original instinctuality, the implementation of which the next volume will bring.Aa essential text is the poem Green Hour. This is the mystery of the existential tragedy of the human who lives on the border between the worlds: nature, human civilization and God. Here we can see the unveiling of the idea of realistic symbolism, which involves the search for mediation between different entities. However, he does not come to it because of the fact that the protagonist of the described events is under the influence of principio individuationis. Only the resignation from this principle - which occurs in the poems of Oak and Desire, and in other works of The Meadow - shows the space of the forest as a place of reconciliation between beings. In the interpretation, it was noticed that Leśmian's cosmogonic concepts were inspired by the philosophical thought of Friedrich Nietzsche and Henri Bergson.

There has been given the modern interpretation of literary dialogue between the Ukrainian writer Mykola Kulish and the Russian writer Myhailo Bulhakov which was started almost a century ago but it wasn’t grasped in full even until today. However this interpretation has been very vital and the processes occurring in the aspect of social consciousness in modern Ukraine vividly confirm it. Having analyzed the peculiarities of composition, plot and characters in ”Pathetic Sonata” by M. Kulish and «The White Guard” («Days of the Turbiny’s”) by M. Bulhakov, we come to the conclusion that this peculiar literary duel had for an object to displace the guidelines mainly in ideological aspect. It was also noted by the contemporaries: there appeared a great dispute in artistic circles, there is even a shorthand record of the meeting of Stalin and the Ukrainian writers which testifies it. But the disputes concerning the subjects raised in these writings are still raging in our days. So, obviously, it is too early to announce the winners of the literary duel.

The subject of the research was E. Guro’s novel The Poor Knight and T. Malick’s film Knight of the Cups. The analysis, inspired N. Bierdiayev’s reflections on the “ethics of values” and the concept of “new knighthood”, indicates the dialogical relations between distant texts of culture. The comparative analysis reveals the following: 1. Guro introduces a new type of literary hero that has a palimpsest character; 2. updates the axiological sense of the knight; 3. the continuity of the knight’s ethos is brought out by the analogy to Malick’s film – their “common places” are: the initiation scheme, the Master / teacher archetype, and the concept of a knight’s mission.

The most frequent representations of the victory achieved against the dragon as the personification of Satan, sinful lusts, temptations, or heresy in Christian art of the Latin world, shows the defeat of this creature (or its substitute) by means of a cross, sword or spear, however while rarely by means of by the gesture of calcatio, that is by trampling. In Catholic tradition Mother of God, Archangel Michael and Saint Margaret trample the dragon, and its substitute. This article only sketches the problem because its subject is very broad, but despite this modesty, it brings the truth about the victory possible only thanks to the power of God.

Opis:
W artykule została podjęta próba opisu literackich figur domu w siedmiotomowej „sadze polskiej” Danuty Mostwin, (Dom starej lady, Londyn 1958, Ameryko! Ameryko!, Warszawa 1981, Cień księdza Piotra, Warszawa 1985, Szmaragdowa zjawa, Warszawa 1988, Tajemnica zwyciężonych, Londyn 1992, Nie ma domu, Lublin 1996, Słyszę, jak śpiewa Ameryka, Londyn 1998). Biografia autorki Domu starej lady wpisuje się w życiorysy wielopokoleniowych polskich rodzin doświadczonych zaborami, wojnami, komunizmem, wychodźstwem. Ten rys autobiograficzny stał się pożywką większości utworów powieściowych Mostwin. Rozważania prowadzone w kontekście filozoficzno-aksjologicznych i teoretycznoliterackich ustaleń pokazują przemiany kreacji figury domu w tych prozach.
The paper attempts to describe the literary figures of the home in Danuta Mostwin’s seven volume “Polish saga” (Dom starej lady, London 1958, Ameryko! Ameryko!, Warszawa 1981, Cień księdza Piotra, Warszawa 1985, Szmaragdowa zjawa, Warszawa 1988, Tajemnica zwyciężonych, London 1992, Nie ma domu, Lublin 1996, Słyszę, jak śpiewa Ameryka, London 1998). The biography of the author of Dom starej lady matches the biographies of multigenerational Polish families that had endured the partitions of Poland, wars, communism, and exile. This autobiographical feature become the substrate for most of Mostwin’s novels. The deliberations, set in the context of philosophical and axiological as well as literary theory findings show the transformations in the creation of the figure of the home in these prose writings. The evolution of the imagery of the home ranges from an Arcadian home to an “anti home”, “home as an ark”, and “home regained”. This corresponds to Danuta Mostwin’s philosophical position, as she considered this combination of values brought from her native country and the values acquired in the country where she settled as most optimal form of defending Polish identity in exile.

The paper discusses Thomas Carlyle’s symbolism - „clothes philosophy” - and the problem of ageing of symbols. First, the category of clothes as symbols is analysed, in the view of contemporary semiotics. Next, the spiritual meaning of clothes philosophy is outlined. In the Scottish philosopher’s opinion, clothes-symbols gradually wear out wi- thin the historie process, and can no longer “dress” the spirit. Baudrillard’s concept is quoted in this context. Carlylean inauthentic symbols become hollow shells or simulacra - signs with no reference to any reality which they were designed to point at, and - within certain limits - substitute. The need for new forms and „clothes”, which would appeal to contemporary generation, emerges, and the fundamental role here is to be played by hero- es. The tailor should be re-tailored, as the title of Carlyle’s masterpiece Sartor Resartus suggests.

The article seeks to address the question of functionality of poetics in understanding the organization of cultural space such as a museum or art gallery. The author asserts that reading museum space can correspond with reading a continuous narrative which includes all art collection, or that it can be read as anthology of individual and varied pieces of art. The comprehension of a museum should also involve the understanding of its contextual elements such as the symbolism of its architectural design or location. The author analyzes twosituations: when the buildingis designed to function as museum and when the museum building has been adapted for this purpose. This latter function may pose a challenge as in this case its past will remain present and will interfere with the new narrative.

Opis:
The novella Pale Horse, Pale Rider, authored by Katherine Anne Porter and published in 1939, is set against the backdrop of the 1918–1919 Spanish flu pandemic towards the end of World War I. It narrates the dual story of individual and societal trauma and survival amidst the pandemic, contributing to the cultural memory of that era in American history. The narrative draws heavily on autobiographical elements, with the protagonist Miranda’s experiences closely reflecting Porter’s own. As Miranda battles a life-threatening flu, her delirious mind traverses past, present, and future, blurring the boundaries between them. This paper examines Porter’s employment of modernist techniques such as dreams, visions, archetypes, biblical allusions, and stream of consciousness to articulate Miranda’s harrowing yet transformative passage through a liminal space between life and death. Porter’s novelistic approach is distinctly modern in its exploration of mortality and the portrayal of Miranda’s near-death experience, aligning her with modernist contemporaries like T. S. Eliot and James Joyce, who also eschewed traditional literary forms to depict the profound dislocations of their time. The enduring appeal of Pale Horse, Pale Rider lies in its rich symbolism and psychological depth in addressing themes of death and illness.

The issue of the harnessing of symbols by politicians is essential, because it ex-plains to what extent government representatives are able to make an impact on society and how much identifying with specific symbols can be viewed as an acceptance of political myths and ideas by voters. This topic is particularly valid in the light of upcom-ing local government elections. Time caesuras of the analyzed subject will be limited by the duration of the election campaign that took place in 2011, from the announcement by the President of the Repub-lic of Poland to the start of electoral silence.
