Opis:
This article concerns two problems. The first is baptismal symbolism, and the second liturgical mystagogy understood as a constant initiation of the faithful into the understanding of the faith. Hence, the first part shows the assumptions of contemporary liturgical mystagogy, which calls for an appropriate approach to the baptism of children on the part of both pastors and parents. The baptismal rites, rich in symbolism, can be helpful in this respect. The second part of the paper provides an explanation of baptismal symbolism. It discusses the importance of baptism, the presence of the community, the questioning of the parents and the godparents, the significance of the church door, the name of the child, the sign of the cross, the procession to the chancel, the exorcism, the blessing of water, the renunciation of evil, the profession of faith, the matter and form of the sacrament, the anointing with chrism, the putting on of a white garment, the giving of a lighted candle and the procession to the altar.

Opis:
Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
The paper examines a special place that the characters of Ophelia and Narcissus, so closely connected with the motif of water, occupy in the poetic imaginarium of George Rodenbach. What we deal with here is an unhealthy obsession within which two characters of literature and mythology, unhappily in love, are presented as two alter egos of the poet himself. An endless sequence of images associating water with death reveals the fascination and trepidation of the symbolist, who uses the Opheliac depths and Narcissus’s water mirror as a reflection of different states of his soul.

An intentional and significant palette : colour symbolism in some of Emile Zola’s novels In naturalist novels, aiming to depict the reality as faithfully as possible, colours are particularly important, and need to be carefully selected. An attentive reader of Zola’s Rougon-Macquart series might notice a very special use of colours that are often charged with an important symbolic value: being not only an ornament or a detail, they frequently influence and/or express the characters’ features. The proposed classification shows some most relevant examples of Zola’s conception of colours in selected parts of the series.

Strawberries were the fruit that the Modernists and Modernism were very fond of. It thus should not be a surprise that strawberries also feature in Modernist prose texts of Katherine Mansfield. Although they make their appearance only in a couple of stories, and then merely for a brief moment, they should not by any means be treated as mere tiny blots belonging to the background. For when we take a closer look at them it turns out that, as is usually the case with Mansfield’s short stories, there is more to it than meets the eye. Seemingly unimportant, often unnoticed and therefore frequently underestimated, this small, sweet, red and fragrant fruit makes a significant statement in every text it is mentioned.

Opis:
The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) was the third film made by an Italian intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini. After many scandals and court trials which concerned seditious character of his earlier shortmovie La ricotta (making part of Ro.Go.Pa.G., 1963), he decided to dedicate his new film to the history of Christ, choosing the text of The Gospel According to St. Matthew, naming it the one which in the best way represents the human nature of Christ and his „being a man among men”. The film he made is an interesting work of art because of many reasons: it was filmed in the area of the South of Italy, it’s maintained in the neorealism aesthetics, and thanks to the actors who starred in the film (one of the Apostles was played by Giorgio Agamben, an Italian philosopher, Jesus was played by a Spanish student, a strong follower of communism and Mary was played by Pasolini’s own mother – Susanna). Nevertheless, The Gospel According to St. Matthew, among other Pasolini’s film, has the most complex and refined soundtrack list, because, this time, the music is the element which plays the major role in the film, being the factor of the stylistic contamination he applied in his works. The story of Christ is portrayed by unusual music choices such as Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by Odetta Williams, Gloria from the Kongo mass Missa Luba, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky and others. Thus, it is important to have a closer look at the film’s music, and by decoding the intertextual figures such as quotations and allusions, try to understand its narrative symbolism and hidden, autobiographical motives created by Pasolini.

The study deals with political propaganda considered as a space for the performance of rituals and ritual behaviours. Such an approach allows for investigating that phenomenon from another perspective than so far proposed by classical propaganda research schools. Special categories of the analysis include the symbolic sphere and conventionality, while emphasis is placed on researching propaganda within politically significant structures. The article provides information on how the phenomenon has been analysed with the use of anthropological research categories.

Opis:
This article undertakes the topic of the evolution in perceiving the ideal of literary musicality among representatives of French symbolism, taking into account Baudelaire and Mallarmé. The former, who is considered to be the precursor of symbolism, used prosody and combined the arts and music to convey the metaphor of painting and poetry. On the other hand, in Mallarmé’s oeuvre, it is poetry that moves closer to music on the level of form. Next, the utilization of the acoustic aspect of text, which is characteristic of Verlaine, is degraded in René Ghil’s artificial system of verbal instrumentation. The work of Villiers de l’Isle Adam and Jules Laforgue shows that music-related topics are gradually set aside and the music theme is softened and gives way to silence. Silence itself is the best way that presents Mallarmé’s ideal of musicality as a silent concert that resonates in the reader’s mind.
Artykuł podejmuje temat ewolucji w postrzeganiu ideału literackiej muzyczności wśród przedstawicieli francuskiego symbolizmu koncentrując uwagę zwłaszcza twórczość Baudelaire’a i Mallarmégo.

Opis:
Sixtine by Remy de Gourmont marks the refusal of nature and tangible reality and the choice of imagination to the detriment of reality. Its principal character, Hubert d’Entragues is a faithful disciple of idealism of symbolism. Since he chooses to think rather that to live, it is not surprising that the plot of the novel is almost nonexistent. The plot develops around of d’Entragues’ desire to win the beautiful Sixtine, which is in itself condemned to failure since he is doing nothing to reach her and refuses to take any effort. The woman, who could have served as the principal impulse of the plot, is practically inexistent in this story (though it is a passionate story) and is replaced by the ideal woman: the story is doubled by the second story, e.g. a novel written by the character which is a transposition of his “cerebral” relation with Sixtine and a realisation of presence of the latter. Art replaces life and life does not exist in itself. It is shaped by thought. But the chosen absence of any facts of life is fruitful: it gives birth to a novel. It is a story of a prisoner in love with the statute of the Virgin which he sees while taking a daily walk. In this novel the carnal accomplishment is not necessary in order for a true and sincere passion to develop and the satisfaction of desire may destroy the dream and the ideal.

Na podstawie dwóch opowiadań – Kąpiel we Wszscińsku Siegfrieda Lenza i Szwabska kąpiel Herty Müller – została podjęta próba określenia więzi rodzinnych w kontekście krwi i wody. Więzy wody, które stają się widoczne podczas wspólnej kąpieli, odzwierciedlają więzy krwi, inicjowane aktem płciowym. W wymiarze duchowym oba rodzaje więzów wykazują zindywidualizowaną zdolność w kształtowaniu kontaktów interpersonalnych (ich stopnia bliskości i oddalenia), ale w wymiarze fizycznym poddane są one ścisłej weryfikacji kulturowej i cechuje je inwersja: o ile relacja wody eksponuje przynależność genealogiczną członków rodziny (integruje swoich i separuje obcych), o tyle relacja krwi zapobiega sytuacjom kazirodczym (łączy obcych i dzieli swoich).

Of all the elements of the human body, hair has been one of the most well-developed symbols. It has been the subject of a variety of activities to which many meanings have been assigned. A specific hairstyle, its shape, length, weave or color in different cultures have meant belonging to particular social groups or determining economic or social status. The author focuses her attention on the aspects of folk rituals using hair, including the symbolic meaning of manipulation of hair, such as combing, pinning and cutting. In addition to determining social status, the important role in the ritual’s calendar and family life, hair has been associated with broadly understood symbolism and various meanings. The purpose of the text is to also show the relationship between the belief function and the appearance of the hair and the actions by which they are affected.

The article deals with the symbolism of the Gothic cathedral and crypt in Wyspiański’s “French” letters to Rydel, Huysmans’ and Berent’s novels, and in the art from the late 19th century through the early 20th century (Monet, Rodin). The cathedral represented in the examined works becomes a symbol of the need of the human soul to free oneself from the body and fly up to heaven. The crypt is considered a space of self-reflection and refuge.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the ways in which religious symbols are present in non-religious spheres of contemporary European culture. It is widely known that, as a result of secularization, religious symbolic language is no longer present in the public sphere and culture of contemporary European societies in the same way as it was in the past. At first sight, it seems that it has lost its relevance for other fields of culture as well as for everyday communication, and that religion has become a relatively closed system of communication. However, more thorough investigation shows that various religious symbols are widely used in many fields of secular culture. The fundamental question concerning religious symbols is whether and, if yes, in what particular way, they change their meaning as a result of being used in non-religious cultural activity. What is the reason that previously marginalized religious symbols reappear in secular culture? It may be hypothesized that religious symbols are not culturally contingent, but they constitute a universal dimension of culture and are deeply rooted in the human mind.

Koder’s life and work still remain a big secret and mysterious code of Serbian literature: this writer is defi ned as a precursor of (post) modernism 20th and 21th century. During his lifetime (1806–1891) as a writer he was not accepted: after death is all but forgotten. Innovations introduced in the literature of his contemporaries were distant and vague, but they fi t perfectly into the context that has become the dominant one hundred years later. Koder’s life destiny and fate of his work here is viewed as a whole, and in the second part analyzes his relationship with symbolism and early modern in the late 19th century. Policies are not only being expressed by symbols and rituals, but their transmission and the use are being shaped by symbolic meanings. They teach how to understand world, putting it in order and help to overcome feeling of the chaos. To a large extent a so-called political reality is being created by symbolic meanings, even if it is hard for us to be reconciled with it. With the help of the appropriate selected set of multi-sensual, dramatic measures the political ritual allows more or less to capture participants and shape social imagination according to intentions of his organizers. Reconstructing or confirming existing political order the official ceremony with its performative nature tries with similar power as the ritual to involve its participants, seeks to generate feeling and images preferred by the authority. 10 January 1920, in accordance with provisions of the Treaty of Versailles the Republic of Poland took back Pomerania (annexed by Kingdom of Prussia in 1772 during First Partition of Poland). According to this, the special celebration was organized on the Puck Bay one month later. An episode with throwing the platinum ring into waters of the Baltic, called Poland’s Wedding to the Sea became soon the most important event in the great national story about the return of Pomerania to the motherland. It established the paradigmatic pattern for another state celebrations, which confirmed the northern boundary of Poland symbolically and state’s territorial integrity. Events in 1945 and 2010 were the variants of Poland’s Wedding to the Sea settled in their own historical context. On the one hand these ceremonies served as performative instruments for national legitimization of the power, but on the other hand they were used by political elites for creating and playing their own, different vision of the state.
