Opis:
Steel materials, due to their numerous advantages - high availability, easiness of processing and possibility of almost any shaping are commonly applied in construction for carrying out basic carrier systems and auxiliary structures. However, the major disadvantage of this material is its high corrosion susceptibility, which depends strictly on the local conditions of the facility and the applied type of corrosion protection system. The paper presents an analysis of life cycle costs of structures installed on bridges used in the road lane conditions. Three anti-corrosion protection systems were considered, analyzing their essential cost components. The possibility of reducing significantly the costs associated with anti-corrosion protection at the stage of steel barriers maintenance over a period of 30 years has been indicated. The possibility of using a new approach based on the life cycle cost estimation in the anti-corrosion protection of steel elements is presented. The relationship between the method of steel barrier protection, the scope of repair, renewal work and costs is shown. The article proposes an optimal solution which, while reducing the cost of maintenance of road infrastructure components in the area of corrosion protection, allows to maintain certain safety standards for steel barriers that are installed on the bridge.

In this study, we investigated the bonding mechanism of surface-treated steel with an Al-Si alloy in order to produce steel-aluminum (STL-Al) hybrid composite materials by cast-bonding. The results showed that there are differences in the phase and properties of the hybrid composite materials bonded specimens depending on the surface treatment of the steel sheet used, and that the bonding conditions can be controlled further by detailed conditions of the surface treatment. Based on the interfacial bonding strengths measured here, the galvanized surface treatment induced metallurgical bonding to form a reaction layer on the bonding surface and was determined to be the most effective surface treatment.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the material mechanics properties of reinforced concrete and steel casing composite concrete under pseudo-static loads and their application in structure. Although elevated pile-group foundation is widely used in bridge, port and ocean engineering, the seismic performance of this type of foundation still need further study. Four scale-specimens of the elevated pile-group foundation were manufactured by these two kinds of concrete and seismic performance characteristic of each specimen were compared. Meanwhile, the special soil box was designed and built to consider soil-pile-superstructure interaction. According to the test result, the peak strength of strengthening specimens is about 1.77 times of the others and the ultimate displacement is 1.66 times of the RC specimens. Additionally, the dissipated hysteric energy capability of strengthening specimens is more than 2.15 times of the others as the equivalent viscous damping ratio is reduced by 50%. The pinching effect of first two specimens is more obvious than latter two specimens and the hysteretic loops of reinforced specimens are more plumpness. The pseudo-static tests also provided the data to quantitatively assessment the positive effect of steel casing composite concrete in aseismatic design of bridge.

Opis:
Cavitation is a one of many wear mechanisms which are related to the flow of liquid. It is one of the most destructive wear methods for stainless materials. The local changes in the pressure of the liquid stream related to the flow across the metal component cause straightening of the surface area, as well as its erosion and the formation of pits on the surface layer. The erosion value of cavitation is related to the material’s microstructure, the geometry of the element, the phase composition of the material and the surface roughness. In this paper the investigation of the cavitation process for duplex stainless steel has been performed. Samples examined in the first stages of the experiments were not significantly changed, but after a long time the hardness increase was very visible. The result of the cavitation was also cracking along the interphase boundaries, which resulted in the chipping of the material. One of the most important results was a description of the change in the wear mechanisms and its intensity during the cavitation exposure time. At first plastic micro deformation of the material’s surface occurred, then the plastic deformation increased significantly and after some time this resulted in erosion of the material and interfacial boundary decohesion; these two effects increased simultaneously. The last of the mechanisms was mechanical destabilization of the austenite, but the clear result of the mechanical destabilization of the austenite was only observed in the last sample. Martensitic transformation of the material changed the material’s mechanical properties, but for the stainless steels this resulted in electrochemical corrosion of the material, especially through the formation of an electrochemical potential between austenite and martensite.

Opis:
Paper presents results of laser welding of dissimilar joints. Flange pipe joints of austenitic TP347-HFG and low carbon S235JR steels were performed. Possibility of laser girth welding of dissimilar joints was presented. Welding of dissimilar materials are complex phenomena, chemical composition of chromium and nickel base austenitic steel with carbon amount of 0.07%, comparing to low carbon steel with trace amount of chromium, nickel and with 0.17% of carbon are different, and affect on welding result. Amount of carbon and chromium have great effect on steel phase transformation and crystallization process, which affect on material hardenability and strength characteristic. In conventional GMA welding methods solidification process of different metals is controlled by use of a selected filler material, for creating buffer zone. The main advantages of laser welding over other methods is process without an additional material, nevertheless some application may require its use. Laser welding with additional material combines advantages of both methods. To carry out weld with high strength characteristic, without welding defects, selecting chemical composition of filler wire are required. Welding parameters was obtained using numerical simulation based on Finite Element Method (FEM). Joint properties was investigated using hardness test. Metallographic analysis of obtained weld was carried out using optical microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis.

Steel recycling saves energy and time, and is more environmentally friendly. It can help rid the environment of huge amounts of scrap vehicles and huge structures, as well as reducing the mining operations that destroy the natural environment. In this investigation, the steel scrap effect on the mechanical properties of concrete was investigated, in addition to investigating the variation in mechanical properties with increased concrete age. Three concrete mixes were studied: one without steel waste as a control, one with 1% steel waste by volume of concrete, and one with 1.5% steel waste by volume of concrete. The results show that adding waste steel to the concrete improved the compressive strength as well as the tensile strength, where a mixture which contains 1% of steel waste had an increase in strength of up to 12% and 23% by day 28 for compressive strength, and tensile strength sequentially in comparison to the reference mix. Furthermore, the results show that there was a significant increase in splitting tensile strength, at 29% on day 28 for a mix of 1.5% steel waste as compared to the reference concrete mix. The best improvement in compressive strength over time was obtained when using 1% steel waste. The best improvement in tensile strength over time was obtained when using 1.5% of steel waste. In both cases, the amount of the improvement was better than the models without steel waste, which gives us confidence in giving recommendations for conducting more in-depth studies to achieve the maximum advantage.

This study investigated the influence of print orientation on the mechanical properties of 17-4 PH stainless steel parts fabricated using material extrusion technology. Tensile test specimens were 3D printed in different orientations (flat, on-edge, and upright), and their mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed that the print orientation significantly affected the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at failure of the specimens. The flat and on-edge orientations exhibited similar mechanical properties, while the upright orientation resulted in lower strength and higher fracture susceptibility. Hardness measurements also indicated variations in hardness distribution among the orientations. The findings emphasize the importance of optimizing the print orientation parameter to achieve desired mechanical characteristics in 17-4 PH stainless steel parts.

Automotive industry is constantly interested in building cars made of light and high strength parts in order to reduce the emission levels, the fuel consumption and minimize the effects of a car crash. Some parts may be made of lighter materials, but the steel ones must compensate the strength needed for the car body. Research is made for finding new materials showing high strength combined with high ductility. Among them, transformation - induced - plasticity steels are of great interest, efforts being made to improve their characteristics. A new composition of such a steel is presented, its features being compared with those of three other steels of the same class and category. Optical microscopy at different magnifications is performed, together with Vickers hardness test. Structural particularities are found for each tested steel, justified by their own chemical compositions. The new steel reveals important characteristics: besides the mainly bainitic structure, it has both larger ferritic areas and amounts of retained austenite, making him proper for further study.

Results of investigation of the effect of processing conditions of medium-carbon alloy steel AISI 300M on forgeability and microstructure-properties are presented here, including as-forged and heat treated condition of the material. The presented results concern two vital aspects of plastic forming of high-duty impression-die forgings, which underlay a selection of technological conditions which enable the accomplishment of the required quality of the forged part. These are: firstly, the microstructure and mechanical properties and their uniformity within a part and secondly, technological realization of forging the required geometry in the given processing conditions. In order to define a favourable processing window, dynamic behaviour modeling in variable forging conditions was carried out, establishing a coefficient of energy dissipation η% and the metal flow instability areas, which indicated the temperature regime and strain rate range for the forging process. The constructed processing maps were subject to experimental verification in the die-forging tests, carried out on a screw press. Hot and warm forging conditions were applied accordingly to selected areas of the processing maps, representative for unique forging conditions occurring in the industrial practice.

Opis:
Lapping is a process by which material is precisely removed from a workpiece to produce a desired dimension, surface finish or shape. It also removes subsurface damage caused by sawing or grinding. According to the classification surface to be generated, type of surface, kinematics of the cutting process, and tool shape (profile), many process variants can be distinguished. Among them face lapping are the most widespread lapping processes. They are used to produce a smooth, flat, unpolished surface. The process of lapping materials has been applied to a wide range of materials and applications, ranging from metals, glasses, optics, semiconductors and ceramics. Workpiece material properties and structure determine kind of material removal. Material removal by cutting, microfusion processes and material removal by microdeformation or by the induction of microcracks are to be underline. C45 is a medium carbon steel used when greater strength and hardness is desired than in the "rolled" condition, especially in mechanical engineering and automotive components. To minimize wear in high-speed applications requires extreme size accuracy, straightness and concentricity. To meet those high demands turning, grinding, lapping and polishing processes are used. This work presents results of steel C45 elements lapping. The experiments were conducted during flat lapping with use of ABRALAP 380 lapping machine. The lapping machine executory system consists of three conditioning rings. The process results were surface roughness Ra and material removal rate.
