Opis:
Wires used for orthodontic arches play a very important role in the process of orthodontic treatment. In combination with the lock attached to the tooth, they move and align the teeth along the set trajectories. Wires of stainless steel are commonly used in orthodontics for several reasons: they are characterised by high resistance to corrosion, high strength and elasticity, formability and a possibility of obtaining defined properties through cold working and annealing during production process. The purpose of the research presented in the work is the analysis of differences of the selected structural properties in the context of corrosion resistance of the orthodontic wire material. The object of the research was edge arches of the 0.016”x0.022” size made of the stainless steel type AISI 304, provided by two different producers: G&H Orthodontics and Adenta. The research methodology involved analysis of chemical and phase composition of the tested alloy, microscopic tests with application of the light and electron microscopy methods, as well as electrochemical direct current measurements. The research presented in the work has shown significant differences in structural and physical-chemical properties of the orthodontic wires made of AISI 304 type stainless steel. Despite the fact, that the tested arches were manufactured of the theoretically the same materials, but by different producers, they significantly differ in chemical composition, metallurgical purity, phase composition and corrosion resistance. In addition, it is worth noticing that the tested materials, in terms of structure, do not meet the normative requirements obligatory for biomaterials.

Isochronal and isothermal annealing of stainless steel 1.4307 samples deformed by compression were investigated using Doppler broadening measurements of the annihilation line. We made an attempt to describe the obtained dependencies in terms of vacancy migration and sinking to the grain boundaries. The model assumed spherical grains with a homogeneous initial distribution of vacancies. The model was capable of following the isochronal annealing data quite accurately. However, the obtained activation energy of vacancy migration equal to 0.44 plus or minus 0.05 eV seemed too low. The isothermal annealing dependency was reproduced less precisely. The reason for this may be the presence of the alfa'-martensite particles in the samples, which can introduce additional defects seen by positrons in the temperature range in which the martensite reversion takes place.

Opis:
Sintered duplex stainless steels (SDSSs) appear to be very interesting and promising materials that can be used in many industrial sectors. Ferrite improves material strength while austenite increases hardness and corrosion resistance. This study proposes a method to improve functional properties (e.g. hardness and wear resistance) by means of alloying the surface of the sintered duplex steel with Cr3C2 + 10% NiAl powder. The results of optical microscope metallography, SEM/EDX, XRD analysis and microhardness and wear resistance measurements are also presented. The surface alloying with Cr3C2 is a manufacturing method of surface layer hardening in sintered stainless steels and modification of surface layer properties such as hardness and coefficient of friction.

The paper presents the influence of mechanical surface damage on the physicochemical properties of plates after implantation made of CrNiMo stainless steel, used in the treatment of anterior surface deformity of the chest. Analysis of the data allowed us to investigate the effect of implant design and condition of their surface on the results of chest deformation treatment. Results of electrochemical, impedance and surface wettability tests and SEM observations were compared with clinical observations. When removing the plates we found only slight inflammatory-periosteal reactions. On the basis of obtained results, it can be stated that plates, in spite of mechanical damage of the surface, were characterized by good corrosion resistance, a fact which is confirmed by the results of clinical evaluation.

The influence of sandblasting on surface and subsurface of stainless steel is investigated using variable energy positron beam (VEP), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Samples of stainless steel were blasted using 110 μm particles of Al2O3 under different pressure and time duration. In the case of sandblasting for 90 s, the reduction of positron diffusion length depending on the applied pressure was observed. Sandblasting during 30 s leads only to the reduction of positron diffusion length to about 60 nm for all samples. Positron lifetimes close to 170 ps measured using positrons emitted directly from the source point to the presence of vacancies on the dislocation lines. SEM and AFM images show that surface roughness depends rather on pressure of sandblasting than time of exposition.

In this work two austenitic stainless steels, REX734 and 316LV were tested in terms of their microstructure and corrosion properties. The REX734 is a newer generation stainless steel, with modified chemical composition, in comparison to the 316LV grade. Potentiodynamic study of corrosion resistance was conducted in physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl solution). In spite of the similarities of microstructure, grain size and phase structure in both materials, the corrosion tests revealed that the REX734, with lower nickel and higher nitrogen content, had better corrosion resistance than 316LV. Repassivation potential in the REX734 was almost six times higher than for the 316LV steel. Superior corrosion resistance of the REX734 steel was also confirmed by surface observations of both materials, since bigger and more densely distributed pits were detected in 316LV alloy.

In this paper the results of experimental studies concerning the phenomenon of initial period of the wear of differently coated sintered carbide tools when dry orthogonal cutting of an AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel are presented. The motivation for this study results from the lack of technological guides concerning the optimal choice of coated cutting tools for machining of corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steels. A number of cutting tool inserts with the plane rake face made of a fine H10F sintered carbide substrate with specially deposited TiN, including TiCN, TiAlN, AlTiN and AlCrN single layers were used in wear tests. Both rake and flank faces of the cutting inserts were examined by optical and confocal microscopy after controlled tool wear. The possible wear mechanisms in terms of changes of the tool-chip contact were investigated.

Laser-generated surface patterns provide the means for local mechanical interlocking between the joined materials, tunes the wettability of surfaces that come in contact, and generally are the main factor for bonding strength enhancement, especially between dissimilar materials. This paper presents the influence of different patterning overlays generated with a pulsed laser on the surface of stainless-steel sheets. For all experiments, an overlapping degree of 90% has been chosen between three different patterns, while the engraving speed, pulse frequency and number of passes have varied. The textured surfaces’ morphology was assessed through optical microscopy, and the roughness of the surfaces was correlated with the corresponding experimental parameters. The results have indicated promising insights for joining stainless steel to plastic materials, which is otherwise difficult to assess through usual welding techniques.

The influence of organic additives on the process of surface electropolishing of AISI 304 type steel was determined. Additives were selected in initial potentiodynamic tests pursuant to the plateau analysis on the current/potential curves. The assessment of the operational effectiveness of additives consisted in determining the relationship between surface gloss after electropolishing and the mass loss of the sample and in determining surface roughness. The applied electropolishing bath consisted of a mixture of concentrated acids: H3PO4  and H2SO4 and the following organic additives were used: triethylamine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and glycerol. The best electropolishing result, i.e. low roughness and high gloss of stainless steel surface with a relatively low mass loss of the sample at the same time were obtained for baths containing triethanolamine.

Now, the use of any medical device based on metals or alloys, especially intended for dentistry applications, is impossible without preclinical evaluation of its anticorrosion properties. Today, the use of stainless steels with AISI standardization, with predilection 316L and 321, are preferred for ergonomic reasons due to their high operational reliability and optimal mechanical properties for functionality over time. In this regard, 316L and 321 stainless steels are tested for comparison in the solution that simulates human saliva with different pH. Stainless steel samples were subjected to corrosion in Fusayama-Meyer and Carter-Brugirard saliva. In-situ electrochemical measurements were applied, such as the open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the corrosion resistance of 316L is superior to 321 in saliva solution at both pH values.

It exhibited the low oxidation resistance in case of 434L only, however it increased as the amount of Fe-Cr-Al powder in the 434L compact. The higher electrical resistivity was observed at the Fe-Cr-Al compact with and 434L powder. The metal oxides of (Fe0.6C0.4)2O3, Cr2O3, and Fe2O3 contributed to the electrical resistivity, whereas Al2O2 took a role of oxidation resistance.

Duplex Stainless Steels (DSS) and Super Duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) have excellent integration of mechanical and corrosion properties. However, the formation of intermetallic phases is a major problem in their usage. The mechanical and corrosion properties are deteriorated due to the presence of intermetallic phases. These phases are induced during welding, prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and improper heat treatments. The main emphasis of this review article is on intermetallic phases and their effects on corrosion and mechanical properties. First the effect of various alloying elements on DSS and SDSS has been discussed followed by formation of various intermetallic phases. The intermetallic phases affect impact toughness and corrosion resistance significantly. Their deleterious effect on weldments has also been reviewed.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of plastic deformation on the electrochemical properties of X5CrNi18-10 steel. The tested material belongs to the group of stainless steels with low carbon content, and it is used in many industries due to its high corrosion resistance. In most applications of the tested material, it is formed into complicated shapes and exposed to aggressive environments. Examples include the applications in medicine (implants) as well as in civil engineering and nuclear power plants. Different effects of deformation on anti-corrosion properties have been described in the literature. Samples with 5 different deformations were obtained in the present experiment. Electrochemical direct electrical current and alternating electrical current tests were performed for the obtained materials. The tests were carried out in a 1 molar sodium chloride solution. The study revealed an increase in the corrosion resistance of samples with increasing strain in the tested strain ranges.

The protection properties of parylene coating on implant stainless steel 316L was investigated. The electrochemical measurements and metal ions release tests in Hanks solution revealed that the coating can be successfully used for corrosion protection. The addition of hydrogen peroxide, simulating the infl ammatory response of human body causes a decrease of protection properties of the coating. However, usage of parylene coating on stainless steel reduce iron ions release rates.

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is a modern manufacturing method with many applications in medicine, aerospace and auto-motive industries. SLM processed materials are characterized by good dimensional accuracy and properties comparable or superior to materials obtained by traditional processing methods. In this paper an SLM process was used to obtain 316L stainless steel parts. This paper presents the microstructure, chemical and phase composition, physicochemical and electrochemical properties of 12 groups of tested samples, differentiated by the SLM processing parameters. Based on the investigation, it can be inferred that the selection of the appropriate SLM parameters is very important to determined final material properties. The samples producedwith the energy density E = 600 J/mm3 were observed to possess optimum properties - a homogeneous structure, density closest to the desired one, good wettability and pitting corrosion resistance.

Opis:
This paper discusses issues related to optimising the technological parameters of the process of brazing gold in a vacuum furnace. An investigation of the brazing process was carried out for materials used in constructing components for aircraft engine fuel systems. The vacuum brazed material was AMS 5510 stainless steel (in the form of plates and pipes). AMS 4787 (BAu-4) was used as the brazing filler. In particular, the influence of the method of preparing the surface on solder spreading and the thickness of the diffusion zone were analysed. The best spreading of solder was obtained for nickel plated surfaces. When the sample surface was more rough or scratched, the effect of the spreading of solder was limited and the diffusion process of the solder into the base material became dominant. Moreover, the influence of the brazing temperature on microstructure changes and on interdiffusion of the AMS 5510 stainless steel/BAu-4 solder system was determined. It was observed that an increase in the brazing temperature modifies the morphology of the formed joint by forming a massive and rounded phase. Furthermore, an increase in the brazing temperature enhances the exchange of components.

The dissimilar welds of AISI 304 to AISI 430 stainless steel was investigated by using gas tungsten arc welding. Three filler metals including ER309L, ER316L and ER2594 were applied. The weakest region of the welds was the heat affected zone of 430 stainless steel due to the formation of martensite. Also, the wide grain growth zone was observed in this side. The ferrite number for type 309L, 316L and 2594 weld metals was about 15, 32 and 57, respectively. The hardness and tensile strength values of the weld metals were higher than that of the heat affected zones and the base metals. The ferrite presented higher hardness values than the austenite in type 316L and 309L joints; while the hardness of austenite and ferrite was comparable in type 2594 weld metal.

Opis:
Stainless steel production generates solid wastes such as dust and sludge that are considered as harmful in most industrial countries. Today dusts are recycled in separate treatment plants as these dusts contain valuable metals such as alloying elements. A direct recycling of dust back to steel production is hindered due to the presence of elements, especially zinc, that cause operational difficulties in the stain-less steel making process. In this paper two different stainless steel converter argon oxygen decarboniza-tion dusts (AOD1 and AOD2), from Outokumpu Stainless (Tornio, Finland), were leached using NaOH solutions. The purpose was to selectively leach zinc out from the dusts and to find factors that affected most dissolution of zinc. The dust samples were leached under atmospheric pressure and the factors tested were temperature, sodium hydroxide concentration, liquid to solid ratio (L/S), stirring rate and oxygen or nitrogen gas bubbling. All the studied factors had statistically significant effect on the dissolution of zinc. The maximum zinc extraction was achieved at 95°C, with 8M NaOH solution, stirring rate of 400 rpm and L/S ratio of 30 and was around 80% for AOD1 dust and around 50% for AOD2 dust. Difference in maximum zinc extraction arose from the mineralogical differences of the dusts. Zinc was leached selec-tively. Among alloying elements only molybdenum was leached and practically no iron, chromium and nickel were dissolved.

The paper presents the research results of relationship between surface roughness reduction index KRa and three input parameters: burnishing speed Vn, feed fn and burnishing force Fn., and all combinations of levels of yields N measured for 48 points of experiment. The experiment was repeated 3 times. In order to select the model describing the results of tests, the stepping approximation analysis was performed. It relayed at incorporated into the model in following steps approximation elements function, giving the biggest decrease of the sum of squared deviations. The first approximation was based on the ternary monomial of the powers from 0 to 3 for each input value. This approximation aim was to show, that the index of surface roughness reduction does not depend on the burnishing speed in the made in the area of research. The reduced input parameters to two, i.e. fn and Fn. The plan of the experiment was brought to N = 12 and M = 12. The best approximation of test results obtained in the case of Laurent polynomial with stepping selection of elements. The biggest contribution to the decrease in the sum of squared deviations was element −1 ∙ 3 , and then fn 2. The article shows that in the range fn {0.6:1.2} there was not information on the successful model and the lack of influence of f and Fn on the results of the experiment. It is postulated to retry the experiment for the feed f <0.6.

This paper presents results of the research on impact of microstructure of austenitic-ferritic steel of duplex type on its mechanical properties and susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. As showed, improper processing technologies more and more often used in shipbuilding industry for plates and other half-finished products made of duplex steel may cause significant lowering their properties, which frequently makes their replacing necessary. Results of the tests on stress corrosion under tension with low strain rate (SSRT) conducted in an inert and corrosion (boiling magnesium chloride) environment , are presented. It was proved that even minor structural transformations taking place in 500ºC ageing temperature lower corrosion resistance of the steel. Structural transformations occurring in 700ºC temperature to a smaller extent influence susceptibility to stress corrosion of the steel, however they cause drastic drop in its plasticity.

In this study, the bio state of the alloy produced in the modified metal injection system was monitored after sintering. A new system operating with high gas pressure, far from the traditional injection model, has been established for material production. In this system, 316L stainless steel powders were molded using a PEG/PMMA/SA polymer recipe. During molding, approximately 60% 316L and 40% binder by volume were used. The samples obtained were sintered at different temperatures (1100-1300°C) after de-binding. Density measurement (Archimedes) and hardness tests (HV1) of the samples were measured as 6.74 g/cm3 and ~285 HV1, respectively. A potentiodynamic corrosion test was applied to monitor the effect of the amount of oxide in the structure of the 316L stainless steel produced. Corrosion tests were carried out in artificial body solutions. The corrosion rate was measured at the level of 17.08×10-3 mm/y. In terms of biocompatibility, a cytotoxicity test was applied to the samples and the life course of the bacteria was monitored. For the 316L alloys produced, the % vitality reached approximately 103%.

Diffusion brazing was performed between titanium (Grade 2) and stainless steel (X5CrNi18-10) using as a filler a nickel foil at the temperatures of 850, 900, 950 and 1000°C. The microstructure was investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray system (EDS). The structure of the joints on the titanium side was composed of the eutectoid mixture αTi+Ti2Ni and layers of intermetallic phases Ti2Ni, TiNi and TiNi3. The stainless steel-nickel interface is free from any reaction layer at 850°C, above this temperature thin layer of reaction appears. The microhardness measured across the joints reaches higher values than for titanium and stainless steel, and it achieves value from 260 to 446 HV. The highest shear strength (214 MPa) was achieved for joints brazed at 900°C.

Opis:
In-situ study of deformation behaviour and mechanisms occurring during early stages of deformation is of a great practical importance. Low stacking fault energy materials, as is the case of AISI 304L, show non-linear deformation characteristics way below the bulk yield point. Shockley partial dislocations, formation of stacking faults respectively, resulting in creation of shear bands and ε-martensite transformation are the mechanisms occurring in the low strains in the studied steel. Acoustic emission and infrared thermography have been used in this study to investigate the deformation kinetics at the low strain stages of slow strain rate tensile tests. Acoustic emission cumulative energy together with the tracking of specimen maximum temperature have been found to be very useful in-situ techniques both supplementing each other in the sense of the sensitivity to different mechanisms. Mechanical, acoustic emission and infrared thermography results are discussed in detail with respect to potential occurred mechanism.

The effect of aging time at 850°C for 300 s, 600 s, 1800 s, and 84600 s on the microstructural evolution and corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) was studied after cold rolling up to 60% of reduction. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy were used for microstructural characterization. The corrosion behavior was studied by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) and electrochemical impedance technique (EIS) in 3.5% NaCl solution and the susceptibility to sensitization was investigated through the double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) test in 0.5 M H2SO4 + 0.1 M NaCl + 0.002 M KSCN solution. After cold working, increasing aging time led to an increase in sigma phase precipitation and a decrease in pitting corrosion resistance. However, the ultrafine microstructure had a beneficial influence on the self-healing effect in Cr and Mo depleted areas with the increasing of aging time, resulting in higher passivation ability. The DSS 2205 type was not susceptible to intergranular corrosion for the aged conditions applied.

Opis:
One of the greatest problems of modern production techniques is the achievement of an appropriate quality at minimal costs and accompanied by the production efficiency increase. Therefore, while designing the production process. The technology used should have a considerable influence on the durability and reliability of machine parts to be produced. During finish treatment, the final dimensions as well as functional properties are imparted to a given element by application of proper treatment type. The engineer has a range of production techniques to choose for the proper surface layer formation. Conventional turning machines belong to the basic equipment of ships, because in sea conditions, they enable the execution of a spare part or carrying out the necessary operations in the process of their regeneration. The use of modern cutting tools makes it possible to obtain a surface with low values of surface roughness parameters. The use of new generation cutting inserts on conventional lathes can cause problems for operators. The lack of the ability to ensure proper of treatment condition and setting errors of cutting tools contribute to the damage of the cutting insert or the surface of the workpiece. The article presents the results of influence of different cutting parameters on surface topography during turning process of stainless steel. A shaft made of 304L stainless steel was used for the research. The cutting process was carried out on a universal TUM 25B x 500 centre lathes. During the turning the following machining parameters were used: cutting speed Vc [m/min], feed f [mm/rev] and depth of cut ap [mm].The turning process was conducted by a cutting tool with CCGT 09T302 UM, CCGT 09T304 UM and CCGT 09T308 UM inserts. Measurement of surface topography was carried out by T8000 profilometer.

Among different methods used in surface engineering such as CVD, PVD, ion implantation etc., the techniques using high intensity ion or plasma beams are relatively new ones. The results reported thus far show that the treatment of steel surface with high intensity plasma pulses can lead to changes of its morphology and mechanical properties. Stainless steels have very good corrosion resistance, but they have low hardness and poor tribological properties. The intense pulsed plasma beams were used for modification of alloyed steels especially austenitic (1.4301 and 1.4401) and ferritic (1.4016) stainless steels with various content of alloying elements. Samples were irradiated with 2, 5 or 10 short (μs scale) intense (density of energy was about 5 J/cm2) pulses. Heating and cooling processes were of non-equilibrium type. In all samples the near surface layer of the thickness in μm range was melted and simultaneously doped with cerium and lanthanum. The aim of this work was to investigate the changes of stainless steel surface morphology after melting, rare earth elements (REE) addition and rapid solidification after interaction with intense pulsed plasma beams. The surface morphology was analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. Changes of surface roughness were determined by profilometric measurements. The efficiency of REE addition process was also determined.

Opis:
The stainless steels are used to build parts of machinery for agriculture. These components should have adequate corrosion resistance because they contact with aggressive environments, such as natural and artificial fertilizers, or e.g. during the biogas production. In such environments austenitic AISI 304L (EN 1.4301) and AISI 316L (EN 1.4571) stainless steels are mostly used. In the available literature authors found no information on the corrosion potentiodynamic tests in manure. That was the reason to undertake the studies on one of the austenitic stainless steels to perform corrosion tests in the environment of animal slurry. The article presents the analysis of general and pitting corrosion of AISI 304L (EN 1.4307) steel in the environment which is the cattle slurry. Potentiodynamic measurements were made on the potentiostat ATLAS 98 with a scan rate of 0.1 mV∙s-1 in the anodic direction and with scan rate of 1 mV∙s-1 in the return cathodic direction. The measurement was started in the anodic direction from potential of minus 600 mV against the saturated calomel electrode (SCE) to achieve a current density of 1000 μA∙cm-2. After that the cathodic scan was done back to the potential of -600 mV vs. SCE. The general corrosion in animal slurry is higher than in 3% water solution of sodium chloride. The corrosion potential measured in the animal slurry was equal to -525 mV vs. SCE. That clearly indicates a higher tendency to general corrosion in comparison with the results obtained in 3% sodium chloride solution (-200 mV vs. SCE). The passive current density ratio measured in the animal slurry to that one in 3% NaCl aqueous solution is equal approximately 8.5.

Recently, 3D printing processes have been used to manufacture metal powder filters with manufacturing complex-shape. In this study, metal powder filters of various shapes were manufactured using the metal extrusion additive manufacturing (MEAM) process, which is used to manufacture three-dimensional structures by extruding a filament consisting of a metal powder and a binder. Firstly, filaments were prepared by appropriately mixing SUS316 powder with sizes ranging from 7.5 µm to 50 µm and a binder. These filaments were extruded at temperatures of 100℃ to 160℃ depending on the type of filament being manufactured, to form three types of cylindrical filter. Specimens were sintered in a high vacuum atmosphere furnace at 850℃ to 1050℃ for 1 hour after debinding. The specimens were analyzed for permeability using a capillary flow porometer, porosity was determined by applying Archimedes’ law and microstructure was observed using SEM.

The paper presents the results of the basic mechanical properties determined in the static tensile test, impact un-notched Charpy test and hardness of austenitic stainless steel type 316L produced by two techniques: classical pressing and sintering in a vacuum with rapid cooling and selective laser melting (SLM). In this work fracture surface of Charpy test, samples were studied. The results indicate that application of selective laser melting (SLM) makes it possible to double increase the strength properties of components manufactured from austenitic stainless steel type 316L compared to sintering in a vacuum. Resulted in mechanical properties strongly depend on porosity characteristic and the presence of superficial oxides in the case of sintered steel and the character of observed microstructural defects deriving from non-fully melted powder particles and the formation of voids between subsequently melted pool tracks during the SLM.

Opis:
The sintered stainless steels of different microstructures (austenitic, ferritic and duplex) were laser surface alloyed with hard powders (SiC, Si3 N4 ) and elemental alloying powders (Cr, FeCr, FeNi) to obtain a complex steel microstructure of improved properties. Laser surface alloying (LSA) involved different strategies of powder placing: the direct powder feeding to the molten metal pool and filling grooves machined on the sample surface by powder, and then laser surface melting. Obtained microstructures were characterised and summarised, basing on LOM, SEM and XRD analysis. The links between base material properties, like superficial hardness and microhardness, derived microstructures and erosion resistance was described. The LSA conditions and alloying powder placement strategies on erosion resistance was evaluated. The erosion wear is lower for Cr, FeCr, FeNi laser alloying, where powders were dissolved in the steel microstructure, and hard phases were not precipitated. Precipitations of hard phases (carbides, silicides, martensite formation) reduce erosion resistance of SiC alloyed stainless steel. The LSA with Si3 N4 works better due to lack of precipitates and formation of a soft and ductile austenitic microstructure. The erosion wear at the impingement angle of 90° is high for hard and therefore brittle surface layers obtained as a result of alloying by hard particles (SiC, Si3 N4 ). The softer and ductile austenitic stainless steel resist better than harder ferritic and duplex stainless steel material at studied erodent im pingement angle.

In this study, ODS ferritic stainless steels were fabricated using a commercial alloy powder, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were studied to develop the advanced structural materials for high temperature service applications. Mechanical alloying and uniaxial hot pressing processes were employed to produce the ODS ferritic stainless steels. It was revealed that oxide particles in the ODS stainless steels were composed of Y-Si-O, Y-Ti-Si-O, and Y-Hf-Si-O complex oxides were observed depending on minor alloying elements, Ti and Hf. The ODS ferritic stainless steel with a Hf addition presented ultra-fine grains with uniform distributions of fine complex oxide particles which located in grains and on the grain boundaries. These favorable microstructures led to superior tensile properties than commercial stainless steel and ODS ferritic steel with Ti addition at elevated temperature.

The automated laser welding process of 2.0 mm thick sheets of AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated. The disk laser with a beam spot diameter of 200 μm was used for bead-on-plate and next for autogenous butt joints welding. The influence of basic welding parameters such as laser power, welding speed, and focal spot position on fusion zone configuration, quality of joints, microstructure changes, and microhardness distribution across the joints were analysed and presented in this paper. The results have shown that stiffening of the 2.0 mm thick sheets is crucial for providing high quality and reproducibility of butt joint in a case of AISI 304 stainless steel due to relatively low thermal conductivity and simultaneously high thermal expansion. Relevant drop of microhardness in the weld zone was observed. The mean value of microhardness of the base metal was 230 HV0.1, while the microhardness in fusion zone of the test welds was ranged from 130 to 170 HV0.1. Additionally the microstructure changes in the weld metal and also in the heat affected zone of test joints is described.

Exhaust systems are susceptible to in-service wear because of their exposition to the very aggressive corrosive environment. Various stainless steels grades (mostly ferritic and austenitic, but also martensitic and duplex) and protective coatings are currently used for exhaust system elements to increase their aestetics and corrosion resistance. This article focuses on evaluation and comparison of the common corrosion properties of two stainless steels with different microstructures (ferritic and austenitic) used for exhaust system components at the low ambient temperature (35 °C). An aggressive acidic corrosion solution for electrochemical cyclic potentiodynamic tests (ASTM G61) was chosen to simulate partly inner (condensate) and also external environment (reaction of exhaust gases with water, chlorides in solution after winter road maintenance). Exposure tests of the pitting corrosion resistance were performed according to ASTM G48 standard method.

Opis:
Angular momentum pumps are frequently applied on board ships. As the pumps are working in hard conditions they are made from materials resistant to cavitation wear and electrochemical corrosion. The most popular damage of pump shaft is neck wear in place where seals are mounted. Burnishing, as modern finish plastic tooling method, makes it possible to get high technological quality of elements. The proposed process of burnishing shaft pins is designed to increase the service life of marine seawater pump shaft installations, which should enhance the economic effect. Thanks to its numerous advantages burnishing was proposed to angular momentum pumps shafts tooling instead of finish machining (finish turning, grinding, lapping). The goal was to estimate optimal burnishing parameters which enable receiving biggest strengthening and lowest roughness factor of angular momentum pumps shafts. The tool used was one-roll burnishing tool SRMD type produced by Yamato. The aim of this study was to determine the internat stresses occurring in the subsurface layer after machining carried out, and after burnishing the surface of marine pump shaft pins made of X5CrNH810 stainless steel.

Conditions were optimized for the first plant-scale dissolution of an aluminum-containing nuclear material without using mercury as a catalyst. This nuclear material was a homogeneous mixture of plutonium oxide and aluminum metal that had been compounded for use as the core matrix in Mark 42 nuclear fuel. B ecause this material had later failed plutonium distribution specifications, it was rejected for use in the fabrication of Mark 42 fuel tubes, and was stored at the Savannah River Site (SRS) awaiting disposition. This powder-like material was composed of a mixture of ~80% aluminum and 11% plutonium. Historically, aluminum-clad spent nuclear fuels have been dissolved using a mercuric nitrate catalyst in a nitric acid (HNO3) solution to facilitate the dissolution of the bulk aluminum cladding. Developmental work at SRS indicated that the plutonium oxide/aluminum compounded matrix could be dissolved using boric acid-hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid as a substitute for mercury. Various mercury-free conditions were studied to evaluate the rate of dissolution of the Mark 42 compact material and to assess the corrosion rate to the stainless steel dissolver. The elimination of mercury from the dissolution process fit with waste minimization and industrial hygiene goals to reduce the use of mercury in the United States. The mercury-free dissolution technology was optimized for Mark 42 compact material in laboratory-scale tests, and successfully implemented at the plant.

One of the greatest problems of modern production techniques is the achievement of an appropriate quality at minimal costs and accompanied by the production efficiency increase. Therefore, while designing the production process, the technology used should have a considerable influence on the durability and reliability of machine parts to be produced. During finish treatment, the final dimensions as well as functional properties are imparted to a given element by application of proper treatment type. The engineer has a range of production techniques to choose for the proper surface layer formation. It is crucial to find a suitable solution which will meet the requirements as well as the work conditions of a given machine part. Opis:
This paper presents results of pitting corrosion resistance of TIG (autogenous and with filler metal) and A-TIG welded lean duplex stainless steel S82441/1.4662 evaluated according to ASTM G48 method, where autogenous TIG welding process was applied using different amounts of heat input and shielding gases like pure Ar and Ar+N2 and Ar+He mixtures. The results of pitting corrosion resistance of the welded joints of lean duplex stainless steel S82441 were studied in as weld conditions and after different mechanical surface finish treatments. The results of the critical pitting temperature (CPT) determined according to ASTM G48 at temperatures of 15, 25 and 35°C were presented. Three different surface treatment after welding were applied: etching, milling, brushing + etching. The influence of post weld surface treatment was studied in respect to the pitting corrosion resistance, basing on CPT temperature. Research on TIG welding of lean duplex stainless steel S82441/1.4662 showed a clear influence of the applied shielding gas mixtures, where the addition of 5 to 15% N2 to Ar virtually no effect on the level of resistance to pitting corrosion, only 5% N2 addition has a positive effect, while use of a mixture of 50% Ar + 50% He compared with welding at 100% Ar atmosphere, can significantly reduce the resistance to pitting corrosion. Definite good results were obtained during TIG welding with the participation of activation flux (A-TIG). The weld surface of lean duplex stainless S82441/1.4662 obtained in A-TIG welding without the addition of filler metal has a much lower tendency to pitting corrosion than traditional welds made by TIG method. Pitting corrosion resistance of welds made by A-TIG improved with the increase of the heat input in the tested range of welding current 100-200 A. It was also found that the intensity of the occurrence of pitting does not affect the method of cleaning welds after welding, but the mechanical removal of a thin surface layer of metal significantly reduces their intensity.
