Opis:
Wires used for orthodontic arches play a very important role in the process of orthodontic treatment. In combination with the lock attached to the tooth, they move and align the teeth along the set trajectories. Wires of stainless steel are commonly used in orthodontics for several reasons: they are characterised by high resistance to corrosion, high strength and elasticity, formability and a possibility of obtaining defined properties through cold working and annealing during production process. The purpose of the research presented in the work is the analysis of differences of the selected structural properties in the context of corrosion resistance of the orthodontic wire material. The object of the research was edge arches of the 0.016”x0.022” size made of the stainless steel type AISI 304, provided by two different producers: G&H Orthodontics and Adenta. The research methodology involved analysis of chemical and phase composition of the tested alloy, microscopic tests with application of the light and electron microscopy methods, as well as electrochemical direct current measurements. The research presented in the work has shown significant differences in structural and physical-chemical properties of the orthodontic wires made of AISI 304 type stainless steel. Despite the fact, that the tested arches were manufactured of the theoretically the same materials, but by different producers, they significantly differ in chemical composition, metallurgical purity, phase composition and corrosion resistance. In addition, it is worth noticing that the tested materials, in terms of structure, do not meet the normative requirements obligatory for biomaterials.

Opis:
The paper presents the influence of mechanical surface damage on the physicochemical properties of plates after implantation made of CrNiMo stainless steel, used in the treatment of anterior surface deformity of the chest. Analysis of the data allowed us to investigate the effect of implant design and condition of their surface on the results of chest deformation treatment. Results of electrochemical, impedance and surface wettability tests and SEM observations were compared with clinical observations. When removing the plates we found only slight inflammatory-periosteal reactions. On the basis of obtained results, it can be stated that plates, in spite of mechanical damage of the surface, were characterized by good corrosion resistance, a fact which is confirmed by the results of clinical evaluation.

Opis:
The influence of sandblasting on surface and subsurface of stainless steel is investigated using variable energy positron beam (VEP), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Samples of stainless steel were blasted using 110 μm particles of Al2O3 under different pressure and time duration. In the case of sandblasting for 90 s, the reduction of positron diffusion length depending on the applied pressure was observed. Sandblasting during 30 s leads only to the reduction of positron diffusion length to about 60 nm for all samples. Positron lifetimes close to 170 ps measured using positrons emitted directly from the source point to the presence of vacancies on the dislocation lines. SEM and AFM images show that surface roughness depends rather on pressure of sandblasting than time of exposition.

Opis:
Isochronal and isothermal annealing of stainless steel 1.4307 samples deformed by compression were investigated using Doppler broadening measurements of the annihilation line. We made an attempt to describe the obtained dependencies in terms of vacancy migration and sinking to the grain boundaries. The model assumed spherical grains with a homogeneous initial distribution of vacancies. The model was capable of following the isochronal annealing data quite accurately. However, the obtained activation energy of vacancy migration equal to 0.44 plus or minus 0.05 eV seemed too low. The isothermal annealing dependency was reproduced less precisely. The reason for this may be the presence of the alfa'-martensite particles in the samples, which can introduce additional defects seen by positrons in the temperature range in which the martensite reversion takes place.

sintered duplex stainless steel

Opis:
Sintered duplex stainless steels (SDSSs) appear to be very interesting and promising materials that can be used in many industrial sectors. Ferrite improves material strength while austenite increases hardness and corrosion resistance. This study proposes a method to improve functional properties (e.g. hardness and wear resistance) by means of alloying the surface of the sintered duplex steel with Cr3C2 + 10% NiAl powder. The results of optical microscope metallography, SEM/EDX, XRD analysis and microhardness and wear resistance measurements are also presented. The surface alloying with Cr3C2 is a manufacturing method of surface layer hardening in sintered stainless steels and modification of surface layer properties such as hardness and coefficient of friction.

Opis:
In this work two austenitic stainless steels, REX734 and 316LV were tested in terms of their microstructure and corrosion properties. The REX734 is a newer generation stainless steel, with modified chemical composition, in comparison to the 316LV grade. Potentiodynamic study of corrosion resistance was conducted in physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl solution). In spite of the similarities of microstructure, grain size and phase structure in both materials, the corrosion tests revealed that the REX734, with lower nickel and higher nitrogen content, had better corrosion resistance than 316LV. Repassivation potential in the REX734 was almost six times higher than for the 316LV steel. Superior corrosion resistance of the REX734 steel was also confirmed by surface observations of both materials, since bigger and more densely distributed pits were detected in 316LV alloy.

Opis:
In this paper the results of experimental studies concerning the phenomenon of initial period of the wear of differently coated sintered carbide tools when dry orthogonal cutting of an AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel are presented. The motivation for this study results from the lack of technological guides concerning the optimal choice of coated cutting tools for machining of corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steels. A number of cutting tool inserts with the plane rake face made of a fine H10F sintered carbide substrate with specially deposited TiN, including TiCN, TiAlN, AlTiN and AlCrN single layers were used in wear tests. Both rake and flank faces of the cutting inserts were examined by optical and confocal microscopy after controlled tool wear. The possible wear mechanisms in terms of changes of the tool-chip contact were investigated.
