Stworzona baza determinant jakości w formie dwuetapowego narzędzia pozwoli organizacjom uporządkować wiedzę, co w efekcie doprowadzi do określenia globalnego celu, który ułatwi wykorzystanie aplikacji koncepcji design-thinking do planowania usług.
In light of the multitude of design-thinking service planning models available, organizations face the dilemma of choice. The literature on the subject lacks clear indications as to the decision to select the most suitable model, especially in the context of different conditions of market sectors. The database of quality determinants in a form of a two-stage-tool will allow organizations to systemize their knowledge which will ultimately enable them to determine the global goal, thus simplifying the application of design-thinking for service design.

Designers have become aware of the importance of creatig strong emotinal experiences intertwined with new tangible products for the past decade, however an increased interest from firms has emerged in developing new service and business models as complimentary forms of emotion-driven innovation. This interdisciplinary study draws from the psychological sciences – theory of emotion – and the management sciences – business model literature to introduce this new innovation agenda. The term visceral hedonic rhetoric (VHR) is defined as the properties of a product, (and in this paper service and business model extensions) that persuasively induce the pursuit of pleasure at an instinctual level of cognition. This research paper lays the foundation for VHR beyond a product setting, presenting the results from an empirical study where organizations explored the possibilities for VHR in the context of their business. The results found that firms currently believe VHR is perceived in either their product and/or services they provide. Implications suggest shifting perspective surrounding the use of VHR across a firm’s business model design in order to influence the outcomes of their product and/or service design, resulting in an overall stronger emotional connection with the customer.

This empirical paper examines a process, starting with the managerial decision to make service design an organizational capability, and follows it as it unfolds over time within one organization. Service design has become an established business practice of how firms create new products and services to promote differentiation in an increasingly uncertain business landscape. Implicit in the literature on service design are assumptions about strategic implications of adopting the prescribed innovation methods and tools. However, little is known about how service design evolves into an organizational capability enabling firms to transform their existing businesses and sustain competitiveness. Through a longitudinal, exploratory case study of service design practices in one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, we explicate mechanisms through which service design evolves into an organizational capability by exploring the research question: what are the mechanisms through which service design develops into an organizational capability? Our study reveals the effect of an initial introduction of service design tools, identification of boundary-spanning actors and co-alignment of dedicated resources between internal functions, as well as through co-creation with customers. Over time, these activities lead to the adoption of service design practices, and subsequently these practices spark incremental learning throughout the organization, alter managerial decisions and influence multiple paths for the development of new capabilities. Reporting on this process, we are able to describe how service design practices were disseminated and institutionalized within the organization we observed. This study thus contributes by informing how service design can evolve into an organizational capability, as well as by bridging the emerging literature on service design and design thinking with established strategy theory. Further research will have to be conducted to confirm if the same mechanisms are observable across contexts and in other firms, and several future research directions are identified. In addition, the study also has implications for practice as it demonstrates how service design methodology can be implemented and has strategic implications for organizations.

W funkcjonowaniu nowoczesnych, ekspansywnych gospodarek coraz większą rolę odgrywają usługi stanowiące kluczowe źródło dochodów budżetu. O jakości usług decyduje w zasadniczym stopniu udział innowacyjnych rozwiązań, w tym zaawansowanych technologii mechatronicznych, teleinformacyjnych i ekologicznych. Zgodnie z podejściem systemowym proces projektowania usługi ma charakter interdyscyplinarny i wymaga zastosowania odpowiednich metod modelowania, weryfikacji i oceny na kolejnych jego etapach, od opracowania koncepcji do wdrożenia. W artykule zaprezentowano opracowaną metodę oceny stopnia dojrzałości wdrożeniowej usług ukierunkowanych głównie na obszary przedsięwzięć badawczo-rozwojowych, technologii przemysłowych i technologii teleinformatycznych. W systemie oceny wykorzystywany jest algorytm identyfikacji zaawansowania rozwiązania, przeprowadzany na kolejnych poziomach. Otwarta struktura systemu umożliwia modyfikację zestawu kryteriów oceny na kolejnych poziomach oraz rozszerzanie bazy kategorii usług.
In contemporary developing and expansive economies, the role and importance of services is significantly growing as they constitute one of the key income sources for the national budget. What decides on the quality of services is, to great extent, the level of contribution of innovative solutions, i.e. advanced mechatronic technologies, information and communication technologies, and environmental technologies. According to the systems approach, the services, the services design process is of interdisciplinary nature and requires appropriate modelling, verification and assessment methods to be applied at its consecutive stages, from the very idea to practical implementation. The article presents the developed method of implementation maturity assessment of service aiming particularly at R&D undertakings, industrial technologies and information and communication technologies. The algorithm for the identification of the advancement of the solution applying to the consecutive stages of the assessment is used in the original assessment system. The open structure of the system enables modification of the set of assessment criteria on consecutive levels of the assessment and also allows to expand the services category database.

Predicting the reliability of marine internal combustion engines, for instance, is of particular importance, as it makes it possible to predict their future reliability states based on the information on the past states. Correct reliability prediction is a complex process which consists in processing empirical results obtained from operating practice, complemented by analytical considerations. The process of technical state changes of each mechanical device is stochastic and continuous in states and time, hence the need to divide this infinite set of engine states into a finite number of subsets (classes), which can be clearly and permanently identified using the existing diagnosing system. Using the engine piston-crankshaft system as an example, the article presents a proposal for a mathematical model of reliability which, on the one hand, takes into account random nature of phenomena leading to the damage, and at the same time reveals certain application flexibility and the resultant practical usability.

During ship design, its service speed is one of the crucial parameters which decide on future economic effects. As sufficiently exact calculation methods applicable to preliminary design stage are lacking the so called contract speed which a ship reaches in calm water is usually applied. In the paper [11] a parametric method for calculation of total ship resistance in actual weather conditions (wind, waves, sea current), was presented. This paper presents a parametric model of ship propulsion system (screw propeller - propulsion engine) as well as a calculation method, based on both models, of mean statistical value of ship service speed in seasonal weather conditions occurring on shipping lines. The method makes use of only basic design parameters and may be applied in preliminary design stage.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for teaching and learning are continually changing and being replaced by the newest “must have” technologies, so how valuable are skillsbased technology courses in the long-term to pre-service teachers? While pre-service teachers need to be competent and confident users of technology (Cowie & Jones 2005), the universities also need to provide them with knowledge about attitudes, values and pedagogical understanding in respect to ICTs (Cameron 2007). These pre-service teachers need to develop a fundamental understanding about the nature of technological change and their own abilities to confront this change (Phelps & Ellis 2003). It has also been determined that ICT-based courses will hold more long-term value for the pre-service teachers if they promote generic technology skills involving authentic, reflective activities that assist them in their continued learning throughout their careers (Herrington, Oliver & Herrington 1999). Therefore, rather than simply provide and deliver specific skills-based information, the lecturer’s principal function has shifted to create a collaborative, challenging and supportive learning environment within which students were introduced to a broad range of philosophical and pedagogical issues that arise from the integration of a variety of technologies in today’s classrooms (Herrington & Oliver 2002).

The article presents the Design Thinking methodic as a modern approach of business problems solving by understanding users needs and looking for the best solutions to meet their requirements. The main goal of the Design Thinking is creating solutions which integrate human needs, business requirements and technological opportunities. The publication includes characteristics of the Design Thinking methodic, individual elements and steps of performing. The different phases of the methodic were described in the article on the example of the innovative usability deployment to existing website. Application of the Design Thinking methodic in the areas of both business and entertainment can greatly lead to the improvement of the quality of websites and various interactive services.
Artykuł przedstawia metodykę Design Thinking jako nowoczesne podejście do rozwiązywania problemów biznesowych poprzez zrozumienie potrzeb użytkowników i szukanie najlepszych rozwiązań spełniających ich wymagania. Celem Design Thinking jest tworzenie rozwiązań integrujących ludzkie potrzeby, wymagania biznesowe oraz możliwości technologiczne. Publikacja zawiera charakterystyczne cechy metodyki Design Thinking, poszczególne jej elementy oraz etapy przeprowadzania. W artykule opisano poszczególne fazy metodyki na przykładzie innowacyjnego wdrażania użyteczności do już działającego serwisu internetowego. Zastosowanie metodyki Design Thinking w obszarach zarówno biznesowych, jak i rozrywkowych, może w dużym stopniu prowadzić do polepszania jakości serwisów internetowych oraz różnego rodzaju usług interaktywnych.

The subject of the research undertaken is the use of available research methods in interior design, with particular emphasis on the user experience method. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the validity of conducting pre-design participatory research, focused on the functionality and efficiency and desirability of the designed solutions. The study used a survey method, involving two groups of respondents: legal professionals and their administrative services, and target law firm employees. The survey was designed to formulate conclusions about the negative and positive factors affecting the comfort of doing work, to define the expectations of employees related to functional, stylistic and aesthetic solutions.
Tematem podjętych badań jest wykorzystanie dostępnych metod badawczych w projektowaniu architektonicznym wnętrz, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem metody user experience. Celem badania jest wykazanie zasadności prowadzenia przedprojektowych badań partycypacyjnych, ukierunkowanych na funkcjonalność i sprawność oraz celowość projektowanych rozwiązań. W badaniu wykorzystano metodę sondażową. Badanie zaprojektowano w sposób pozwalający na sformułowanie wniosków dotyczących negatywnych i pozytywnych czynników wpływających na komfort wykonywania pracy, na zdefiniowanie oczekiwań pracowników związanych z rozwiązaniami funkcjonalnymi, stylistycznymi oraz estetycznymi.

This study investigates whether personal commitment moderates the effect of aerospace education on service experience through quality design. A cross-sectional study using a close-ended questionnaire was administered to a sample of 174 aviation students of Moi University, Kenya. Moderated mediation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro in order to investigate the relationship among variables. The results showed that the association between aerospace education and service experience was significant, and this association was mediated by quality design. The mediated effect of quality design was moderated by personal commitment. Based on the findings, companies involved in aviation should focus on improving the good environment of the service encounter (i.e., education, quality design and commitment) to enhance service experience. The findings made a contribution in terms of allowing us to understand the factors that can enhance service experience in the aviation industry.

When designing a transport vessel, one of the most important parameters assumed by the owner is the service speed of the ship. Service speed and motor power are calculated as an approximation of the ship’s speed in calm water (i.e., the contract speed) with the addition of the sea margin (SM). In current design practice, the addition of SM is not dependent on weather parameters occurring in liner shipping. This paper proposes a new method for establishing the value of SM depending on the type and size of the vessel and the average statistical weather parameters occurring on various shipping lines. The results presented in this paper clearly demonstrate that further research is needed to determine the precise relationship between the shipping and vessel type and the weather parameters on a shipping line.

Subiect of the paper is the problem of predicting sea-going ship resistance and/or horsepower in real operating conditions. Attention is drawn first of all to the need and possibility of revising the very much outdated but still used "service margin" method, which consists in adding an arbitrary percentage margin to the value of resistance or horsepower, relatively precisely determined for the calm water conditions. A negative impact in this respect is shown of the generally used delivery-acceptance procedures, where particular importance is attached to the ship propulsion tests on the "measured mile". The need of revising the "service margins" is a consequence of an obvious need for most efficient ships from the technical as well as economic point of view. Secondly, it is a "must" of permanent improving the ship design quality - the adequacy and accuracy of design methods. The work presents the "wave service margin" coefficient models. It is assumed that they may contribute to the necessary rationalization of the procedure of real ship resistance and/or horsepower determination. The work is based on the results of resistance tests of a series of ships designed within the Baltecologicalship project. The tests were carried out in the Chair of Ship Theory and Design of the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology, Gdansk University of Technology.
