SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING
Opis:
The study describes growing interest of self-directed learning (SDL) on the field of adult education. Looking at its origin the idea is complex and rich. There are many parallel ideas and theories within the phenomenon self-directed learning. As many related components are used in a similar way the idea of is fraught with confusion. In English language there is a strong need and some wide research had been undertaken to clarify the meanings of related concepts as well as the meaning of the idea of SDL. In order to avoid misunderstandings in implementation self-directed learning in Polish theory we have to clarify the independent concept that will describe the exact meaning meant by authors rather than to use already existing expressions which have their original meaning much different from the idea of self-directed learning. In the study the new expression in Polish language has been defined and explained.

The article presents research on students’ independent self-learning. The applied method was an analysis of intentionally prepared documents. While conducting the research, an attempt was made to recognise: the manner of the understanding the notion of “learning” by the students; the manner of learning which they apply as well as evaluation of their own effectiveness in this scope. The participants in the research identify learning mainly as mnemonic acquisition of new knowledge in the situations related to the process of studying. In the majority of cases, they work unsystematically, applying ineffective techniques of learning and express negative judgements on their own learning effectiveness.

The escalation of the contagion effect results in many consequences in various spheres of life. The important problem, which looks for further discussion is the impact of centralization and self-learning on the ability to response to contagion effect escalation. The system approach methodology seems to be the most appropriate one to resolve such complex issues. For this reason, a procedure of identification of system amidst contagion was developed. Consequently, it was applied to interpret the multinationals response amidst contagion. The authors suggest that each branch can build its own model of prevention against contagion within the decentralized system. Additionally, it should be based on mechanism of self-similarity and redundancy.

Increasing autonomy and sustainability are major goals in manufacturing. Main technological trends provide enablers for achieving these goals and need to be implemented and combined in manufacturing machinery in a suitable manner. The paper exposes a vision of modern manufacturing machines, where the complexity of manufacturing processes is handled within the manufacturing machine and a simplistic front end is presented to the operator, which means that major elements of operators’ tasks are fulfilled by the intelligence of the machine. Research vectors paving the ground for this concept from different points of view are then discussed. Research is presented on intelligent grinding, intelligent recognition and suppression of chatter, adaptive thermal and motion error compensation exploting also self-learning abilities. It is necessary to point out, that not only intelligent mastering of process and machine becomes more and more important but communications among machine tools enabling process chain overarching intelligent approaches and creating intelligent factories.

self-learning FE method
Opis:
An application of Artificial Neural Networks for a definition of the effective constitutive law for a composite is described in the paper. First, a classical homogenisation procedure is directly interpreted with a use of this numerical tool. Next, a self-learning Finite Element code (FE with ANN inside) is used in the case when the effective constitutive law is deduced from a numerical experiment (substituting here a purely phenomenological approach). The new contribution to the classical self-learning procedure consists of its adaptation to a case of a non-monotonic loading (non-to-one load-deformation curve). This new ability of the method is principally due to the incremental form of the constitutive equation and the respective scheme of the neural network structure. Also an organisation of a constitutive data-base containing learning patterns is suitably modified. It is shown by examples that the training process is very quick. The error of this method is smaller, comparing to other schemes of data acquisition.

Opis:
The role of self-regulation in general learning has been investigated for some time now. Its significance and contribution to second language (L2) listening, however, has yet to be discussed extensively with empirical support. This article reports a case study involving four college EFL students in China over a six-month period of self-regulated learning (SRL) in developing their listening in independent settings. The study examined how the achievement and metacognitive awareness of four high-achieving and low-achieving listeners may have been affected by strategies they used for self-regulating extensive listening activities. It also examined the learners’ engagement during four phases of self-regulated listening, namely, task definition, goal setting and planning, strategy enactment, and metacognitive adaptation. Findings revealed substantial differences in the two groups’ metacognitive engagement in three SRL phases. The article argues that the achievements of the respective learners in listening development were affected by these differences. Pedagogical implications of a self-regulated learning approach in extensive listening for L2 listening development are discussed.

The main goal of the paper is presentation and discussion of behavior of the users of e-learning open resources. The research is related to e-learning materials presenting area of knowledge not connected with any kind of formal exams or skills certifications. Moreover offered and learned knowledge is not connected directly with any profits, and learning process is devoted to increase of student intellectual abilities only. This is the main difference between results quoted in this paper and results related in many existing papers and books, where always was observed behavior of students using e-learning resources for acquisition of knowledge which was obligatory for this students. It means we have information about students who can learn at any time and at any time – but must learn indeed. People observed in research presented in this paper nothing has learn – but they will learn without any forms of formal pressure forced learning activity. Over four year observation of the users of given e-learning resources forms the basis for proposed in paper model of such users. Proposed model of the average user of open e-learning resources behavior, can be very interesting and useful in context of life-long-learning watchword.

Heutagogy is an educational concept which puts emphasis on the development of learners' capability understood as 'an integration of confidence in one's knowledge, skills, self-esteem and values' (Stephenson, 1992). The process of learning is learner-centred in this approach, which enables the learner to use their own experience and be led by their needs and expectations in order to make their plan of development more appropriate and adaptive to changing circumstances. According to Stewart Hase and Chris Kenyon - the concept's authors, heutagogy is an extension of pedagogical and andragogical approaches. This paper explains main assumptions of the concept and shows research data on this idea implementation in VET and educational practice.

Opis:
The article proposes to study the concept of autonomous learning and, more specifically, self-directed learning. The author bases his analysis on the ethnographic research concerning the functioning of the Language Resource Center (LRC), parts of the University of Lille in France. This multimedia space created for different languages learners offers them many opportunities to develop their language skills: computer laboratories, workrooms, many support documents available on site (CD-ROMs, DVDs, original and live TV channels, dictionaries, magazines, journals, reference works). Others, classified according to levels, objectives and skills, can be found on a digital platform and remain available online at any time through a search engine. The LRC gives also the possibilities to meet the language tutors (face-to-face or at a distance) and to participate in different activities offered by them. These various modalities of learning a foreign language are targeted at supporting autonomy, independent learning adapted to the needs, interests and the pace of each learner. The interviews conducted with tutors working in the center allow us to notice numerous positive aspects of LRC activities, but also to detect a few problems resulting largely from the lack of a coherent strategy of action within language studies.

Hase and Kenyon (2001) explored the learning theory of heutagogy along the continuum of learning theories. Heutagogy provides a framework for self-determined learning and follows the continuum created through the theories of pedagogy and andragogy. However, the practice of heutagogy allows students to remain in control of their learning through the application of self-determined learning. This approach is significant when used in relation to mobile learning devices. This theory is highly relevant in considering how to best provide learning for Gen Z students, born between 1995 and 2012. This paper suggests there are benefits in exploring Gen Z student learning through a heutagogical application.

The research examined the relationship between web-based learning and self-learning readiness of nursing students. The research was a single-group experiment, in which 162 second-year nursing students were given a pre-test and a post-test. All the students use the Internet. Before and after the web-based course, a statistically significant difference was observed concerning the average points totaled for self-learning readiness. Results show that web-based learning positively affected the self-learning readiness of nursing students. Therefore, nursing students would benefit from web-based education as it improves their readiness for self-learning.

Aim. This manuscript aims to present the theoretical and contextual characteristics of the developed training program focused on identifying the components of students’ self-regulated learning activities with the use of metacognitive monitoring as well as improving the effectiveness of the students’ learning activities at the individual-personal, motivational-volitional, cognitive and metacognitive levels. To do this, we sought to analyze these phenomena in scientific literature and develop a training program aimed to develop students’ reflexivity, internal learning motivation, and metacognitive skills; to inform students about the features of metacognitive monitoring and metacognitive control of self-regulated learning activities, their awareness of the characteristics of their own processes of understanding, evaluating and reproducing information; to form comprehension and task analysis skills, as well as understanding of the specifics of performed tasks. Methods. A system of general scientific methods was used: analysis and synthesis of the main characteristics of the concepts of self-regulated learning and metacognitive monitoring as a complex multidimensional formation, comprehension of the psychological foundations of self-regulated learning, systematization and generalization of scientific provisions of metacognitive monitoring in student self-regulated learning. This study focused on the design and development of the training program for increasing the efficiency of metacognitive monitoring in student self-regulated learning. Results. The presented manuscript has analyzed the theoretical aspects of the concepts of metacognitive monitoring and self-regulated learning of HEI students. The theoretical essence of the methodological and contextual characteristics of the above mentioned phenomena has been studied. The role and importance of metacognitive monitoring and its components in the learning efficiency and academic self-regulation of HEI students have been described. It has been determined that metacognitive monitoring as a metacognitive characteristic of personality determines not only the organization of mental and behavioral processes, but also relates to the academic success of the subject of learning activity, namely the student. The training program for increasing the efficiency of metacognitive monitoring in student self-regulated learning has been developed and presented. Conclusions. The program was designed to help students consciously approach the independent planning and setting of learning goals, control intellectual and metacognitive activities, and use cognitive and metacognitive strategies in learning, monitoring, controlling and correcting their learning activities. Since these processes provide students with cognitive understanding of their own cognitive processes, the use of this type of training program will help students optimize their learning outcomes through metacognitive monitoring in the process of self-regulated learning activities.

This paper explores pedagogical practices which can support the role of imagination in foreign language learning. Over the past decade, work on self and identity in motivation research-most notably Norton’s (2001) imagined communities and Dörnyei’s (2009) L2 motivational self system-has suggested that teachers might foster students’ motivation by helping them imagine themselves as L2 speakers and envisage contexts or communities in which they might use the target language. If teachers are to help students create and sustain visions of L2 identities, they need to employ a pedagogy which incorporates and facilitates the work of the imagination. In order to provide guidelines for pedagogical practice, this paper examines the experiences of Japanese university students studying English as a foreign language in a selfdirected learning course. Prior analysis of the data revealed several affordances which supported the participants’ metacognitive development and the role of imagination in their learning. Using these affordances as a conceptual framework, this paper builds on previous work by identifying elements in the learning environment which appear to support the role of imagination in the students’ language learning. The paper concludes by suggesting guidelines for pedagogical practice and considering the implications for further inquiry.

Opis:
When it comes to language learning and teaching, one of the major issues that needs to be tackled is the large differences between students in terms of school performance, especially socially disadvantaged children who tend to lag behind their peers. Research on language teaching tends to focus on the average learner, thus leaving little room for students living and learning in low socio-economic regions (low SES). Central Europe, and particularly Hungary, displays one of the most considerate gaps in education, where disadvantaged regions and schools often underperform on the national curriculum tests. Innovation, alternative pedagogical methodologies and different mindset in teaching can bring about enhanced motivation, especially by employing digital devices and the elements of gamification. The purpose of our study is to introduce a new, tablet-based digital language course programme (HANNA), developed specifically for socially disadvantaged pupils in grades 5-7, which draws upon the teacher’s role as a facilitator. The paper explains and describes the factors that contributed to designing the structure of HANNA, along with the organisation of the programme and the gamified elements that are meant to motivate students, thus providing an insight into material development specifically for disadvantaged pupils.

This study explores the complex relationships between language learning motivation, vocabulary learning strategies, and two components of second language vocabulary knowledge (i.e., vocabulary size and depth), within the framework of self-regulated learning. Responses to questionnaires were gathered from 185 secondary-level Korean adolescent learners of English as a foreign language, regarding their motivation and vocabulary learning strategy use; additionally, the results of their vocabulary size and depth tests were collected. We adopted structural equation modeling for analysis, with vocabulary learning strategies consisting of memory, cognitive, and metacognitive categories, and vocabulary knowledge consisting of vocabulary size and depth. The results showed that motivation directly predicted vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary knowledge, and indirectly predicted vocabulary knowledge via vocabulary learning strategies. When further classified, intrinsic motivation was found to have a stronger influence on the use of vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary knowledge than extrinsic motivation. We discuss the implications of increasing learners’ motivation and repertoire of strategies for improving vocabulary size and depth.

The paper proposes a new dynamic model based on the LuGre model and an electrical equation to describe the hysteresis phenomenon for a magnetorheological (MR) damper. In addition, a sliding mode observer (SMO) is proposed to estimate unmeasurable states of the MR damper. The parameters of the MR damper are successfully identified by using the self-learning particle swarm optimization (SLPSO) algorithm. The contributions of this paper are: i) a new dynamic model based on the LuGre model and an electrical equation for an MR damper is successfully formulated to fit for the hysteresis behavior, ii) the exerted damping force can be practically adjusted by using input voltage for the dynamic model, iii) the SMO is proposed to estimate the internal states and current, and iv) the unknown parameters of the MR damper are successfully identified by using the SLPSO algorithm with a numerical experiment.

English language tutoring and/or self-access centers are services commonly offered as curricular support to English language program students in educational environments worldwide. This paper argues that the theory of self-directed learning (SDL) from the field of adult education should be considered alongside the equally-important areas of language learning strategies, learner autonomy, and self-regulated learning in the setup of these types of tutoring/self-access academic support centers. The proposition is examined by applying it to a particular case in an English language program of a major research university in the southeastern United States. The paper explicates the commonly-known theory of SDL (Grow, 1991) and relates it to models by put forward by Nakata (2010) and Oxford (2011, 2107). Empirical evidence from studies on encouraging SDL for English language study is summarized from a range of research projects conducted worldwide, and the author concludes by offering implications for educators in any institution-based, adult English language program.

Most reinforcement learning benchmarks – especially in multi-agent tasks – do not go beyond observations with simple noise; nonetheless, real scenarios induce more elaborate vision pipeline failures: false sightings, misclassifications or occlusion. In this work, we propose a lightweight, 2D environment for robot soccer and autonomous driving that can emulate the above discrepancies. Besides establishing a benchmark for accessible multiagent reinforcement learning research, our work addresses the challenges the simulator imposes. For handling realistic noise, we use self-supervised learning to enhance scene reconstruction and extend curiosity-driven learning to model longer horizons. Our extensive experiments show that the proposed methods achieve state-of-the-art performance, compared against actor-critic methods, ICM, and PPO.

The predominant context for strategy research over the last three decades has focused on language learning situated in a conventional classroom environment. Computer technology has brought about many changes in language learning and has become ecological and normalized rather than a supporting tool in the language classroom. Consequently, the landscape of language learning has been rapidly and largely changed with the normalization of technologies in people’s daily communication. The pervasive use of mobile technologies and easy access to online resources require that digital language learners understand and employ appropriate learning strategies for learning effectiveness and that their teachers are able and willing to teach these strategies as needed. This article provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research into technology-enhanced language learning strategies. The strategies under review include those for language learning skill areas, language subsystems, and self-regulated learning. At the end, we discuss the pressing issues that Digital Age language learning has posed to learners, teachers, and researchers and propose considerations for strategy research in digital realms.

When academic students are introduced to scientific work, they need to become familiar with how to select a research topic, to identify research goals, and to structure a research project accordingly. In Business Informatics, research practice is increasingly following a design science approach. In this contribution, we introduce a corresponding digital support scheme. It is based on cognitive apprenticeship and scaffolding to specify the research questions and derive requirements from a problem statement for possible solutions. Learners are supported in a socio-cognitive way, as the set of digital learning-support features comprises peer-to-peer interactions, content co-construction, and a portfolio-like documentation scheme. Context-sensitive (focused) interaction and organizing group work facilitate content co-creation and effective information sharing. They support self-managed scientific skill development while being able to follow structured research procedures.

Zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa literatury przedmiotu. Wyjaśniono, w jaki sposób działania rodziców i korepetytorów  mogą wspomóc szkołę w tworzeniu warunków do uczenia się w czasie edukacji zdalnej.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to show the role of the student’s environment and social resources in the development of self-regulated learning while attending distance classes  in the time of COVID-19 THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem focuses on finding answers to the following questions: What is self-regulated learning? What is the role of the learner's environment and social resources in fostering self-regulated learning in a virtual classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic? What is the role of adults in organizing the learning environment for their children? Is tutorial conducive to strategic behaviour? The research method is a critical literature review. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Based on the literature review,  a self-regulated learner profile was developed. The results of research concerning the influence of remarkable people from the home environment on the development of child's learning skills were presented and analyzed. It was explained how parents’ and private teachers’ activities, can support an online schooling in creating conditions conducive to learning during the period of distance education. RESEARCH RESULTS: The work presents a broad perspective on supporting the student in learning how to learn. The analyses indicate that the ability to learn can be developed in various ways by remarkable  persons from the student's environment. It has also been shown that private tutors’ work  with the student, does not only compensates the learning gap,  but  it also prepares the student for self-education.  CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: A remarkable adult plays a very important role in shaping self-regulated learning. The involvement and the use of the student's social resources is a key element of distance education. Therefore, raising awareness among parents about self-regulated learning should be a priority task for all educators.

Opis:
Software and digital visual mapping tools have recently been implemented by educators and academics for several educational and related purposes. The current study was set out to explore the effect of using CAAM on Thai EFL learners’ argumentative writing performance and their self-regulation of learning awareness. A total of 28 freshman students were purposively selected as the subjects of the study. The researcher used a mixed-mode method type of research involving a pre- and post-test design. Data was collected from a single group of participants who participated in eight sessions based on the use of CAAM in their writing processes. A Self-Regulation of Learning Scale (SRS) was utilized to identify the students’ awareness of their self-regulation of learning. The results reveal that the CAAM method used by the respondents made noteworthy gains on their argumentative writing performance across task achievement, coherence-cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy, as indicated by a significant difference between their pre- and post- test results. Furthermore, four out of six components of SRS reveal a significant relationship with their writing performance indicative that the respondents have become more cognizant of their self-regulation in terms of planning, self-monitoring, effort and self-efficacy. Finally, qualitative findings reveal that the respondents had positive feelings about using CAAM in their writing processes as well as enhanced their awareness on their self-regulation of learning.

Opis:
With the growing presence of robots in human populated environments, it becomes necessary to render their presence natural, rather than invasive. To do that, robots need to make sure the acoustic noise induced by their motion does not disturb people nearby. In this line, this paper proposes a method that allows the robot to learn how to control the amount of noise it produces, taking into account the environmental context and the robot’s mechanical characteristics. Concretely, the robot adapts its motion to a speed that allows it to produce less noise than the environment’s background noise and, hence, avoiding to disturb nearby humans. For that, before executing any given task in the environment, the robot learns how much acoustic noise it produces at different speeds in that environment by gathering acoustic informatinon through a microphone. The proposed method was successfully validated on various environments with various background noises. In addition, a PIR sensor was installed on the robot in order to test the robot’s ability to trigger the noise-aware speed control procedure when a person enters the sensor’s field of view. The use of a such a simple sensor aims at demonstrating the ability of the proposed system to be deployed in minimalistic robots, such as micro unmanned aerial vehicles.

Opis:
This paper presents a study aimed at examining whether DIY corpora compiled by professional legal translators can assist them in their role as learners of legal sublanguages, particularly those translators working into non-native target languages. A procedural DIY corpus methodology has been developed, involving the framed retrieval of authoritative legal texts from Internet repositories or other sources by legal translators themselves, according to their specific needs or those of particular projects, bearing in mind at all times feasibility in the workplace. Target audience expectations and requirements are also an important consideration in the project.A pilot study performing some initial testing with professional legal translators in certain legal genres and different languages has been completed and will be reported on. Results so far seem to indicate that compilation of such corpora can be achieved in an average of 30-45 minutes, in line with users' expressed criteria. It is posited that these highly specialised corpora may provide translators with some additional reference material that they are sorely lacking due to the absence or shortage in many language combinations of legal dictionaries or thesauri, in particular as regards collocations. It is hoped that a contribution may be made to professional practice in the long term.

In social sciences, learning undertaken by adults as part of their passions is still a poorly recognised problem. This article is the result of an attempt to fill this gap. The aim of the study was to reconstruct the process of adult learning inspired by passion and to identify the features specific to this type of learning. The presented considerations were placed in the interpretative paradigm. The educational biography method was used and the data was collected using unstructured, in-depth interview. Two educational lines were identified in sports enthusiast narration: non-formal and informal learning. The study conducted leads to the conclusion that learning inspired by one’s passion is highly valued by the individual (meaningful), planned, autonomous, continuous and leading to mastery. It is also reflective, voluntary and unique, focused on self-fulfilment and personal development of the individual, and it is based on strong internal motivation and a large emotional and intellectual commitment of the enthusiast.

Opis:
This text presents a theoretical analysis of Maria Montessori’s concept of cognitive autonomy, defined as a process of gaining power and control over one’s own thinking and learning, building the ability to regulate its course and evaluate the results of learning. The main aim of the article is to present the cognitive potential included in M. Montessori’s pedagogical thinking, the undiscovered dimensions of her concepts, and the unusual actuality confirmed by the latest research results. The first part of the article presents the constructive nature of the learning process based on self-discipline, the internal ability to regulate one’s own impulses, and control them consciously. The second part of the article presents contemporary interpretations of Maria Montessori’s concepts, provided by researchers and teachers- practitioners from the perspective of new psychological and pedagogical achievements. The evolution in the thinking of Montessori teachers is seen here as being a sensitive balance, with the “purity” of Montessori’s original ideas on the one hand, and a critical reflection over one’s own personal teaching practice, and discovering problems or phenomena, which – although unnamed – are deeply rooted in the Montessori classroom environment.

Opis:
This study reports on the validation of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), a self-report, Likert-scaled instrument, developed by Pintrich et al. (1991). The instrument consists of two sections, i.e., motivation in the process of self-regulated learning and the learning strategies of university students. The adaptation concerned only the first section, the learning strategies section was not part of the adaptation. The sample consisted of 284 students of the Faculty of Humanities at Tomas Bata University in Zlín (256 women and 28 men). The average age was 24, ranging from 19 to 49, with a standard deviation of 6.4 years. Within the adaptation of the MSLQ for the Czech educational environment, the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, Cattell’s scree test and parallel Monte Carlo analysis were performed. As a result, a 3-factor model was generated. The motivation scales tap into three broad areas: (1) expectancy (represented by academic self-efficacy; 4 items), (2) value (represented by task value; 6 items), and (3) affect (represented by test anxiety; 7 items). The internal consistency (Alphas) of the subscales varies from 0.76 to 0.84. Significant correlation between Academic self-efficacy and Task value subscales was.377. The results correspond to the theoretical model.

This article is the second part of a series of three articles on the importance of implementing the learning to learn idea in pre-service teacher education and in the qualified teacher’s career. It aims to discuss the theoretical foundation of learning strategy instruction, present a number of practical strategy training schemes which can be used in the language classroom, and analyze essential roles and tasks modern second/foreign language teachers need to be able to perform in order to help learners learn to learn. Since successful teaching necessitates developing personalized skills and strategies necessary for further, continued or lifelong learning, the author emphasizes the need for educating ‘strategic’ language teachers prepared to foster learner self-regulated learning through direct, or fully informed, strategy training.

The article presents empirical and diagnostic research aiming to recognise how a generalised feeling of self-efficacy differentiates students’ independent learning. In the research, Generalized Self – Efficacy Scale (GSES) was applied (according to R. Schwarzer, M. Jeruzalem, in the Polish adaptation by Z. Juczyński) as well as a free-form interview, partially categorised. The study group was composed of 215 intentionally selected pedagogy students, following full-time and part-time courses. The variable adopted in the research differentiates the view of students’ independent learning, mainly in terms of the degree of involvement in their own learning. A high level of self-efficacy seems to be related to regularity, persistence in learning, consistency, the ability to focus on longer periods of learning, as well as the ability to plan and organize one’s own learning process. A generalized sense of self-efficacy, however, is not critical to how we understand the concept of learning, assigning value to it, and the used learning techniques.

Opis:
This study uses the Interactive Learning Model theory to explore the nature of self-awareness within each of three L2 learners. Using the Learning Connections Inventory (LCI), a validated and reliable learning instrument, each participant identified their combination of learning patterns. The subjects then recalled specific L2 learning experiences, relating them in first person narratives. Next, each subject composed anecdotes and reflections based on their narratives. They also participated in one-on-one interviews in which they described their learning experiences during basic L2 learning activities: vocabulary, grammar, writing, conversation, and passive listening during movies, live theatre, spectator sports, and television. Our analysis of the LCI outcomes and selfreported learning experiences demonstrated that the self-awareness gained from understanding their combination of learning patterns and expanded by the self-reflection activities, increased the participants’ ability to articulate the nature of their self-awareness and to identify evidence of their growth in self-awareness during L2 learning.

The necessity of developing students’ competences concerning independent learning is easily noticeable in both Polish and international educational documents as well as in scientific literature. This article contains an attempted answer to a question in what way teachers stimulate independent learning activities of primary school students (grade 1 to grade 3). This was the aim of the research conducted with the help of selected group of teachers from Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. The research checked for instance how the teachers encourage the students to independent learning, how they are formulating their homework tasks, and whether they apply the multi-level learning approach. The results of this study are presented in this report.

The ability to self-learning should be shaped from the very beginning of school education. It is a very important skill, because it is used in higher education, where the learner explores and analyzes the problems in cognitive purposes. According to the results of empirical research, conducted by the authors among the students of University of Lodz since 2008, students are becoming more and more erratic, need contacts with academics, have a lower level of motivation to self-study. The research also shows that the percentage of students who don't have the ability to self-learning is rising. Students are neither prepared to study at university nor to be active self-educators in the later stages of life. The purpose of the paper is to indicate the need for changes in the system of higher education, which are necessary to make students active self-learners who will be ready to develop goals, methods and techniques of learning. Those changes should be about creating conditions for students to develop their ability to self-learning and preparing them to self-development in later stages of life. The theoretical part of the article was based on literature studies. The authors used books, articles and internet publications about self-learning and Polish universities. The empirical part of the paper contains the results of empirical research conducted by the survey technique. These research were carried out between 2008 and 2012. The respondents were students of the Faculty of Management, University of Lodz.

Both teacher and student agency have been discussed and researched for quite some time in different learning contexts. Here, I will present a general framework for pedagogical practices that enhance translator education by promoting student agency defined as the process through which learners become capable of strategic actions which form the basis for autonomy and confidence in their own proficiency and effectiveness. I will suggest how student agency and collaborative and situated learning can interact to provide students with professional and relational skills that set the basis for the development of autonomous strategic learning. This combined approach involves the acceptance and use of planned and spontaneous learning opportunities embedded in contextualised activities, tasks, and projects. Some practical examples will illustrate the main points.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional face-to-face learning was suddenly replaced by online learning in universities all over the world. This sudden switch posed a wide variety of challenges to teachers and students. This paper focuses on one teaching practice, teachers’ feedback, and on a students’ form of self-perception, self-efficacy beliefs, both inherent to the teaching-learning process, whether it occurs in the classroom or a virtual environment. An action-research mixed-method study was performed to analyze how teachers’ feedback can impact translation students’ self-efficacy beliefs in three educational modes: face-to-face lessons, blended learning and online learning. This study was performed in two phases. Firstly, a quasi-experimental field study was performed before the outbreak of the pandemic in three groups of the same course: one offered traditional classes, whereas the other two included blended learning. Following the essence of action-research, the results of this first phase were implemented in an online translation course during the pandemic. After comparing and contrasting the results obtained in these two phases, we can conclude that indirect, elaborate and dialogic feedback fostered the students’ self-efficacy beliefs, irrespective of the educational mode.

The study investigates how their own accent in English is self-perceived by Polish learners. More specifically, we compare how, and to what extent, self-reported pronunciation differs from self-rated pronunciation prior to and after the exposure to one’s recorded speech. Previous research on non-native accent rating has concentrated on scores obtained from native speakers or other proficient speakers of English. In the current study, we concentrate on how learners evaluate their own accent in English for parameters such as pronunciation, articulation and fluency. We also introduce an independent variable of proficiency. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted and the result showed that there are no major differences between how learners report their accent in English and how they rate it from the recording of their own speech. It indicates that the general self-image of one’s accent is fairly stable and exposure to the sample of one’s speech does not change the overall self-perception.

Opis:
Until relatively recently the impact of emotions on language learning has often been ignored and “the nature and contribution of positive emotions and beneficial emotional states deserves further attention” (Bown & White, 2010, p. 433). Our study focuses on a flexible language learning system that combines different elements: work in a virtual learning environment, group work, counselling sessions and a logbook. One of its objectives is to help students progress towards autonomy—defined as “the capacity to take control over one’s own learning” (Benson, 2011, p. 2)—in their learning of English. The logbook has been shown to be useful in helping students become conscious of the new role they have to play in such a system (Chateau & Zumbihl, 2012). A discourse analysis of 100 logbooks from the 2012-2013 cohort of students showed that the traces of emotions they contained could enable us to identify important steps in the development of autonomy, as well as make hypotheses on the links between emotions, students’ self-efficacy and the development of learner autonomy.

Opis:
The mini-research deals with the nature, structure and functions of managers’ intercultural professional interaction competence as a form of social interaction. Managers are the leading element in the social interaction "businesses - society", on the one hand, they bear the burden of social responsibility, on the other, they have to sacrifice their individual values to meet the requirements of their companies and company’s owners and make professional decisions that conflict their personal ones. It may lead to “moral schizophrenia‟ [1, p. 25], because managers lack knowledge of social problems, skills of a decision-maker, and experience in this field. The analysis of the scientific research in this field has shown that the term “intercultural competence” is mostly conceptualized as an individual’s capacity to interact with people who represent different cultures. But the term “intercultural professional interaction competence” has not been defined yet. The nature, structure and functions of the phenomenon have been identified on the multidisciplinary approach base as the following: it is a joint productive activity based on agent-agent relations; it is a form of social responsibility; the nature of intercultural professional interaction is communication that has the multilevel structure; each level of the structure has its aim, function, means of interaction that influence the communicating strategy of conversational partners and, therefore, the outcome of intercultural professional interaction. The article highlights pedagogical conditions of training managers intercultural professional interaction as one of managers’ professional competence, such as: 1) creation of intercultural professional communicative learning environment; 2) facilitating communication; 3) students’ self-managed and autonomous learning. The principles specific for training will-be managers the professional intercultural interaction are the principle of the rationality in the relationships and the harmonization of the relationships.

Purpose: The first aim of the article was to investigate whether high school graduates who want to study management take up gainful employment before starting their studies and how much was their salary. The second goal was to determine the reasons for starting studies and choosing a field of study, and the third was to determine the degree of identification of professional interests of first-year students in the field of Management. Design/methodology/approach: For the research presented in this article, an analysis of the literature in the area of professional competences and career development was used. Research was also carried out using questionnaire forms with open questions. The research covered all first-year students of Management at the University of Szczecin. Findings: Almost all first-year management students worked before starting their studies. They started their studies guided mainly by their interests in the field of management and the desire to run their own business, but they do not have exactly what exactly they would like to do after graduation. Research limitations/implications: In the future, research will be continued on a larger research sample. Practical implications: students have poorly identified interests. Their task is to try to identify these interests, but the support of lecturers is also important. Originality/value: Reasons for starting studies and choosing the field of Management and Identification of students' interests. The research results can be used by academics and students.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to verify the assumption that pronunciation learning during a course of phonetics is hindered by the feeling of anxiety (Phonetics Learning Anxiety) experienced by foreign language (FL) learners studying English as their major at universities or colleges. A study carried out among 32 students of the School of English at Wroclaw University (Poland) revealed a significant negative correlation of moderate strength between the subjects’ level of Phonetics Learning Anxiety (PhLA) and their attainments on pronunciation tests (sentence, passage and word reading) conducted after a 45-hour (30x90-minute lessons) course of practical phonetics. The detrimental effect of PhLA on pronunciation learning was further supported by t-tests, in which the pronunciation of high anxiety subjects was found to be at a significantly lower level than that of low anxiety students. The Phonetics Learning Anxiety Scale, a 44-item questionnaire based on a 6-point Likert scale, designed for the purpose of the research sheds light on the nature of this peculiar type of apprehension experienced by advanced FL learners in a specific educational context (i.e. a traditional classroom, rather than a language or computer laboratory), in which the major focus is on pronunciation practice. The obtained quantitative data imply that such factors as fear of negative evaluation (represented by general oral performance apprehension and concern over pronunciation mistakes, pronunciation self-image, pronunciation self-efficacy and self-assessment) and beliefs about the nature of FL pronunciation learning are significant sources of PhLA. Anxiety about the transcription test (IPA Test Anxiety) - one of the other hypothetical determinants of PhLA - did not prove to be correlated with the general level of Phonetics Learning Anxiety

Opis:
The main aim of this series of three articles is to explore the question of what it is that makes ‘good’ language learners, what individual factors can influence the learner’s success in second/foreign language learning, and what teachers and learners can learn from those who succeed in this complex task. In Part I., the author reviews a number of research studies on the ‘Good Language Learner’ issue conducted since the 1960s; she also attempts to summarize the main characteristics, strategies, and behaviours of successful and unsuccessful learners. Part II. presents an overview of studies focused on the role of selected individual differences and shows how the variables may influence the process and outcomes of language learning; it also indicates which strategies and behaviours of ‘good’ learners can be taught and learnt in the classroom. In Part III., the author explores the issue further and presents the results of her empirical studies aimed at identifying the features and strategies of both successful students of English as a foreign language and learners with lower achievements. The pedagogical implications for language teaching and learning discussed within the series are closely related to the ideas of strategies-based and styles-and-strategies-based instruction in language education, self-regulated or autonomous language learning, and continued lifelong learning.

Opis:
This article reports the first meta-analysis of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2005, 2009). A total of 32 research reports, involving 39 unique samples and 32,078 language learners, were meta-analyzed. The results showed that the three components of the L2 motivational self system (the ideal L2 self, the ought-to L2 self, and the L2 learning experience) were significant predictors of subjective intended effort (rs = .61, .38, and .41, respectively), though weaker predictors of objective measures of achievement (rs = .20, -.05, and .17). Substantial heterogeneity was also observed in most of these correlations. The results also suggest that the strong correlation between the L2 learning experience and intended effort reported in the literature is, due to substantial wording overlap, partly an artifact of lack of discriminant validity between these two scales. Implications of these results and directions for future research are discussed.

This paper is about four Japanese university students majoring in international studies, who participated in a two-year study examining changes in their motivation. Using monthly interviews and a 29-item questionnaire on Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 motivational self system that was administered alongside each interview, the trajectories of learner motivation were investigated, based on both quantitative and qualitative data. First, changes in the participants’ motivation were identified using quantitative data. Next, a variety of motivators and demotivators that learners experienced both inside and outside of their classrooms were analyzed using the qualitative data. With the data obtained, this study focuses on how four learners’ language learning motivation and contexts adapt to each other, and how the dynamics of the four learners’ motivation changes due to their learning experiences. Each learner was different in their trajectory of motivation and the kinds of motivators and demotivators that they experienced in their particular contexts. The four learners underwent unique motivators and demotivators, and reacted differently. While participants identified their ideal L2 selves, or ought-to L2 selves, these self-guides were not strengthened by their L2 experiences over time. Based on these findings, the importance of studying the rich experiences of language learners in motivation research is discussed.

Affective learner factors were first considered as a cause of success in language learning. This was followed by a change in approach and recently authors (e.g., Edelenbos, Johnstone, & Kubanek, 2006) have considered them an important outcome, especially in early foreign language learning (FLL). Current research into affective learner factors in early FLL tries to catch the developmental aspects too, and studies are emerging that take a contextual view as well. This paper describes a study on affective characteristics of young FL learners that combines the developmental and contextual perspectives. Using the case study methodology the author analyses the affective profiles of three young learners of English as a foreign language who were followed for 4 years. The analyses are done taking into account their immediate language learning environment, home support, out-of-school exposure to English and language achievement. The findings suggest that affective learner factors contribute to the dynamic complexity of early FLL.

Despite the growing empirical interest in academic procrastination in the distance learning, there are only limited studies on the determinants of this phenomenon in the blended learning programmes. The present study investigates the relationships between general self-efficacy, two types of procrastination (active and passive procrastination), and the behavioural tendency to postpone learning activities in a blended learning university course using Moodle platform. Results indicate that passive procrastination is strongly positively associated with procrastination in blended learning, while perceived self-efficacy and active procrastination are unrelated to the self-reported task delays during the blended learning course. In addition, the negative link between the reported number of previous completed blended-learning courses and procrastination in blended learning is observed. Practical and theoretical implications of these findings for a blended learning environment are discussed.

The traditional self organizing map (SOM) is learned by Kohonen learning. The main disadvantage of this approach is in epoch based learning when the radius and rate of learning are decreasing functions of epoch index. The aim of study is to demonstrate advantages of diffusive learning in single epoch learning and other cases for both traditional and anomalous diffusion models. We also discuss the differences between traditional and anomalous learning in models and in quality of obtained SOM. The anomalous diffusion model leads to less accurate SOM which is in accordance to biological assumptions of normal diffusive processes in living nervous system. But the traditional Kohonen learning has been overperformed by novel diffusive learning approaches.

The quantitative data were collected through self-efficacy questionnaires filled out by dyslexic and non-dyslexic students, and the qualitative data were collected during a case study conducted with a dyslexic student. The research findings in the first quantitative part of the study reveal that self-efficacy in dyslexic students is substantially lower than in non-dyslexic students. According to the results of the second mixed, quantitative - qualitative part of the study encompassing a case study, foreign language instruction has an impact on dyslexic students’ self-efficacy and appropriate language instruction rises self-efficacy in students with dyslexia.

A better understanding of the multifaceted, dynamic and situated identity of the language learner stands at the center of much current SLA research. One of the main ways in which it is investigated is through the examination of autobiographical language learning histories. In an effort to better understand some of the processes which lead to a motivated, confident and successful language learner and user, this article analyzes the language learning histories of two EFL student-teachers, notable for their commitment to the learning and teaching of English. A close analysis of their narratives, focusing on thematic, stylistic and performative aspects, reveals what narrative psychologist McAdams (2006) has called “redemptive” patterns, that is, narrative structures in which hardship leads to inner growth and difficulties become “springboards” (Pals, 2006) to success. The two narrators also display a similar flexibility in their evolving self-positioning in response to the difficulties they narrate, and for both, attachment to the imagined community of Anglophone popular culture is an essential component in this process. Together, the learning experiences delineated in the accounts support the call for student-focused pedagogy, which puts emphasis on creating a positive emotional atmosphere, on the one hand, and providing rich intercultural knowledge, on the other.

Mencius, referred to as second sage in Chinese philosophy history, grounds his theory about original goodness of human nature on psychological components by bringing in something new down ancient ages. Including the principles of virtuous action associated with Confucius to his doctrine, but by composing them along psychosocial development, he theorizes utterly out of the ordinary that makes all the difference to the school. In his argument stated a positive opinion, he explains the method of forming individuals’ moral awareness by means of inseparable integrity of feelings and thoughts, saying human being are born innately good. According to Mencius, heart-mind correlation is the motivational complement of inner incentives. Knowledge and virtue, which are extensions of inborn goodness, comprehended intuitively; then affective motives respond to circumstance, what is learned transmits to cognitive process and eventually behavior emerges. Comparing during the years of Warring State period he lived, in western geography Aristotle, who is one of the pioneers of Greek philosophy, argues deductive and inductive methods in mental activity. On the other hand, Mencius uses analogical reasoning throughout his self-titled work. This essay is an attempt to assert that most postulates of developmental theories, which have been considered an integral part of modern psychology, begin with Mencius in early era. Secondly, this study also aims to discuss the main paradigm of Mencius across emotivist-rationalist opposition, which keeps emotion above thought as well as reason above emotion.

Identity is of increasing interest in teacher education. Crucial for resilience, the development of a coherent professional identity has been characterized as emerging from tensions between multiple and sometimes conflicting conceptions of what it means to be someone who teaches (Akkerman & Meijer, 2011). While light is being shed on these often antagonistic relations, less is known about the dynamics of identity formation and transformation. Providing a contribution to work on language teacher identity, in this single case study Hermans’ (2008) concept of the dialogical self is combined with complexity principles in an investigation of changes in the emerging professional identity of a pre-service English teacher during a practicum. Drawing on intra- and inter-personal data, experiences of learning to become a person who teaches English are conceptualized as a drama that is played out between different and sometimes unaligned selves. Analyses show how this inner drama maps onto the landscape of an emerging teacher identity, how tensions can be understood systemically, and how a teacher identity system can have a signature dynamic.

The article expands on a presentation given by the author at an international symposium held at the University of Silesia from May 10-13, 2005, entitled Innovation in Higher Education: A Global Perspective. Perspectives on transformational processes in Higher Education vary widely even after forty years of exploration by psychologists, educators, sociologists, and neuroscientists. West Chester University of Pennsylvania’s Plan of Excellence includes five essential transformations in which is embedded the new Elementary Education Masters Degree Program in Applied Studies in Teaching and Learning. An essential catalyst for transformation is the experience of personal authenticity. As a goal of teacher development, authenticity paradoxically leads to heightened individuation as well as social connectedness and integration. Highlighted in this area of study are components of a six-area framework of Human Development as a formative study for personal, social, cultural, and global transformation. Future implications for questioning and enriching teacher development are explored.

Aim. The aim of this study was to highlight and analyse teachers’ responses to the evidence of their students’ social emotional growth and teachers’ own gains from the monitored implementation of social emotional learning in their classes. Methods. The research group was composed of 312 teachers from Latvia and Slovenia, who were involved in the implementation of indirect social emotional learning through classroom instruction and formative assessment. A thematic analysis of the teachers’ written responses was performed. Results. A thematic analysis of the teachers’ responses indicated that initially they had mentioned mostly (expressed) general statements and only some small part of their responses included observable and measurable indicators of students’ social emotional skills improvement. Therefore, four months after the beginning of the intervention, teachers reported rather on their personal and professional gains from the participation in this intervention than provided general statements. Conclusions. The teachers’ improved self-reflection is a premise for them to consider evidence of students’ social emotional skills development thus facilitating purposeful social emotional learning in schools.

Opis:
Drawing on theoretical insights from a complex dynamic systems framework, this work explores the ways that learner selves, as they relate to learning and using languages, manifest across different contexts and timescales and emerge in interaction with various factors. First, a broad overview of dynamically-oriented L2 motivation research is provided before critically considering the need for research that aligns with conceptual advances made under the dynamic turn in SLA. In particular, this critical overview highlights a crucial need for more research employing dynamic methods capable of revealing how learner perceptions of self emerge in relation to their interlocutors and in interaction with external factors, including language ideologies that may uniquely characterize sociocultural contexts where target languages other than English are learned. The chapter concludes by discussing ways to implement dynamically oriented methodology that can provide much needed insights into the inherent dynamic, emergent, and contextually and socially embedded nature of learner selves.

Modern psychology allows us to assume that human behaviour is influenced by specific factors. It is always associated with an objective and the pursuit of this objective depends on the type and strength of motives as well as an individual’s belief in his or her own capabilities to achieve it. Mastering the ability to sail is a difficult task, which is why motivation and evaluation of one’s capabilities are crucial. The study was an attempt to determine the level of self-esteem and motivation of people participating in yachtsman training, and to discover whether global self-esteem influences the assessment of the degree of difficulty and the degree of sailing knowledge and skill acquisition. The study featured 116 individuals aged between 15 and 46, divided into three groups: pupils, students and working individuals. The researchers used a Polish version of M. Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale as well as a questionnaire created by the authors of the study. The results have demonstrated that the mean self-esteem is high in each age group with regard to normalisation studies. Women have a higher level of self-esteem than men. The distribution of the results does not conform to the normal distribution pattern, because it is clearly dominated by high results with a complete lack of low results among pupils, students and women. A link has been noted between the level of self-esteem and perception of the degree of difficulty and mastery of sailing skills. High self-esteem and positive motivation accompanying it influence the perception of the difficulty of new tasks and significantly increase the effectiveness of learning and action.

Opis:
The systematic acquisition of knowledge is an important skill. Nevertheless, students seem to have problems with proper planning of their education and preparing their tasks on time. Referring to behavioral economics, this can be explained with the planner and doer model. This draws attention to the problems with self-control and describes the dilemma caused by internal tension between favorable long-term plans and short-term actions distracting attention from implementation of the former. The aim of the article was to analyze student activity in e-learning classes. The analysis concerned a group of students regularly performing assigned tasks and the spread of their activities within the given period. It also allowed investigations into whether the time of submitting the task affected its quality and whether systematic work during the semester affected the exam result. The analysis of student activity in the e-learning classes shows that: • There was a large group of students regularly submitting tasks, but there was also a group who never prepared any of them. • The spread of activity over particular days showed that most posts were published on the last two days of the given period. • There was a relationship between the time of submitting the task and its evaluation – the posts from the final two days received a lower average number of points than those from previous days. • There was a positive relationship between the ongoing performance of the tasks and the exam results. The analysis presented here is a preliminary study but shows some trends among the students.

Adult education is the central question of andragogy. Its mission is to assist in understanding the problems of the growing number of adult learners in the perspective of lifelong learning. Currently, the key skill of an adult human is the ability to find a new reality and updating their competence. Studying of extramural students is an active participation in the lifelong learning, which is their conscious choice, leading to the realization of the objective. According to the Mezirow theory, ability to reject frames of reference and self-assigned meaning it is a feature transformative adult learning. Autonomy in theory transformative learning is an expression of responsible thinking, which is regarded as the central issue of adult learning.
Opis:
The theoretical emphasis within the L2 Motivational Self System has typically been on the two future self-guides representing possible (ideal and ought-to) selves, leaving the third main dimension of the construct, the L2 Learning Experience, somewhat undertheorized. Yet, this third component is not secondary in importance, as evidenced by empirical studies that consistently indicate that the L2 Learning Experience is not only a strong predictor of various criterion measures but is often the most powerful predictor of motivated behavior. This paper begins with an analysis of possible reasons for this neglect and then draws on the notion of student engagement in educational psychology to offer a theoretical framework for the concept. It is proposed that the L2 Learning Experience may be defined as the perceived quality of the learners’ engagement with various aspects of the language learning process.

We present a report from our preliminary research, which focused on the possibilities of implementing game elements into e-learning at university. We were interested in the attitudes and preferences of the students on the introductory course for the study of culture, where a questionnaire survey was conducted. We asked students what potential they see in the application of digital technologies in e-learning, what motivates them to study online and what advantages and limits of the educational principles of games they see in e-learning. Here we offer a description of the preliminary results that led to our next research steps. The questionnaire was distributed among students of two runs of the Introduction to the Study of Culture course at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University, who completed it after the final test. A total of 188 students submitted a completed form. These were bachelor students, usually in the first year of study, mostly women. We chose a freely available online tool for the analysis, our approach to data processing was non-mathematical at this stage. Nevertheless, we believe that it has enabled us to gain a direct and unmediated insight into the subject of our research. Mixed methods pragmatic rationalization of the research process traditionally refers to the complementarity of datasets and greater validity. Based on the findings, we recommend to educators and developers of the online learning environment how they could improve the design of e-learning in accordance with the needs and different learning styles of students.

To what extent do students of French philology currently benefit from the affordances offered to them by modern digital tools, in particular the various video-on-demand platforms, for informal learning of French via French-language films and series? 2. How does this activity stimulate their metacognitive awareness and self-awareness in the area of learning French as a foreign language? To this end, students of French philology took part in a survey which demonstrated that films and series are an important leisure activity, even if French-language titles represent only 21% of what they are watching. However, these films and series are subjected to important metacognitive reflection.

The paper introduces the topic of the Musical Assertiveness Training (MAT), developed in 2014, based on the application of music therapy and mixed arts therapies. The method is based on the latest worldwide achievements in the field of assertiveness training and adopts them for training based on the use of primarily music and art. The MAT-programme is divided into the cycle of twelve music-therapeutic sessions and leads step by step to the basic skills of assertive behaviour. It is designed as a workshop and has been used so far in in the process of educating future pedagogues both as an educational and therapeutic method, supporting the development of emotional, communication and social competences. The article describes the basic concepts of assertiveness and refers to the wider theory from which it originates and to which the innovative training refers such as: the cognitive theory of social learning by Bandura (modelling), the theory of multiple intelligences by H. Gardner and the concept of self-efficacy, self-presentation and self-esteem.

Our study examined the differences between students with special educational needs (SEN) and other students in vocational and technical schools in different areas of self-regulation: learning motivation, cognitive and metacognitive strategies and emotional regulation in learning. The sample consisted of 140 students, of whom 20 were students with SEN. Differences between students were most often expressed in the area of lower perceptions of self-efficacy. With respect to the regulation of time and study environment, the students with SEN had greater problems with following the study schedule than other students; in the area of taking responsibility for learning, the students with SEN gave up faster and did not persevere in studying the more difficult subject matter. The students with SEN also expressed less positive beliefs about themselves and their abilities; they sought study support later or not at all compared to other students and gave up on studying more difficult course material. In inclusive classes with the students with SEN, the teachers should dedicate more time to develop self-regulated learning skills and strategies and thus increase students’ feeling of control over the learning process.

Finally, their writings indicate that the experiment served as an exercise in self-reflection and in some cases, produced sentiments of self-empowerment.

Opis:
The present paper aims to propose a new computational method for potential learning to improve generalization and interpretation. Potential learning has been proposed to simplify the computational procedures of information maximization and to specify which neurons should be fired. However, it is often the case that potential learning sometimes absorbs too much information content on input patterns in the early stage of learning, which tends to degrade generalization performance. This can be solved by making potential learning as slow as possible. Accordingly, we here propose a procedure called “self-assimilation” in which connection weights are accentuated by their characteristics observed in the specific learning step. This makes it possible to predict future connection weights in the early stage of learning. Thus, it is possible to improve generalization by slow learning and at the same time to improve the interpretation of connection weights via the enhanced characteristics of the connection weights. The method was applied to an artificial data set, as well as a real data set of counter services at a local government office in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The results show that improved generalization was observed by making learning as slow as possible. In addition, the number of strong connection weights became smaller for better interpretation by self-assimilation.

I propose and discuss some principles that I believe are substantial for perception, various kinds of memory, expectations and the capacity for imagination in the mammal brain, as well as for the design of a biologically inspired artificial cognitive architecture. I also suggest why these same principles could explain our ability to represent novel concepts and imagine non-existing and perhaps impossible objects, while there are still limits to what we can imagine and think about. Some ideas regarding how these principles could be relevant for an autonomous agent to become functionally conscious are discussed as well.

Opis:
This paper draws attention to the significance of implicit pedagogical knowledge in the educational process of future teaching staff. Implicit pedagogical knowledge is here understood to be the “hidden” knowledge of students of teaching, which originates on the basis of their prior experience, is derived from a student’s implicit theories of learning and teaching, is interlinked with their explicit knowledge – and which influences the behaviour of the student in a pedagogical situation. In the process of creating and developing implicit pedagogical knowledge, the author considers the following to be key elements: self-reflection and the publicising and sharing of pedagogical experience. He indicates that it is absolutely essential that the traditional understanding (such as has been handed down to-date in the literature) be enriched by a new dimension – and especially by the dimension of one’s personality. He offers a newly-coined term “pedagogical condition”, which is understood to describe the ability and flexibility of a student to behave proactively under a variety of pedagogical situations.

Opis:
In this paper we address some of the issues surrounding the use of educational technology solutions with first year net generation students in an introductory education studies unit. These issues include the need for more engaging learning experiences, the role of technology in supporting this need, and the possible mismatch between expectations and actual needs. The student usage and access of a low-cost, flexible alternative to face-to-face individual or group-based academic support was the focus of this case study. We describe our rationale and attempt to help students with their assignment requirements in a first year teacher education unit through the development of a small-scale self-directed intervention program, and report on student engagement with the model. Analysis of the data brings to light findings that have implications for policy design and shows a need for timely research to better inform lecturers of their students’ digital literacy, acceptance and access, and use of innovative learning designs. This also highlights the requirement for a greater awareness of the technologies that students embrace, the technologies that may pose a challenge and the differing needs of first year students to those of the more experienced learners.

Opis:
Wykazano, że władze samorządowe gmin przyrodniczo cennych województwa lubelskiego w niedostatecznym stopniu wykorzystują możliwości kreowania procesu collective learning we wspieraniu zrównoważonego rozwoju lokalnego.
The aim of the study was to: define the potential role of local municipal authorities in the process of collective learning within natural valuable areas and to diagnose the activity of local authorities representing the municipalities within the natural valuable areas of the Lublin Voivodeship in this respect. The following areas of the activity of local authorities in the process of collective learning have been defined: development of individual knowledge in municipality offices, synergy of individual knowledge in municipal offices, creating conditions for the process of knowledge exchange between the offices and the environment entities. It has been shown that local authorities of the municipalities within natural valuable areas of the Lublin Voivodeshipdo not sufficiently exploit the potential for creating the process of collective learning in fostering local sustainable development.

Opis:
Crossing borders features prominently as a theme in study abroad, not only in terms of students’ physical border crossings but also in their intercultural interactions with second language (L2) speakers whose background (linguistic and otherwise) they may perceive as markedly different from their own. Researchers have had a long-standing interest in study abroad participants’ interactions with other L2 speakers abroad for their perceived potential to enhance L2 development, L2 motivation and intercultural learning processes. The focus of existing studies in this area has been on the interactions of study abroad participants with host national students, while their interactions with other international students who are also L2 users abroad have received far less attention, despite the ever-growing international student populations at European universities. This study examined students’ views regarding the role that lingua franca (LF) interactions with other international students played in their L2 acquisition, their L2 motivational development and their intercultural learning during study abroad. The data were derived from an empirical study that involved 81 German ERASMUS students who were studying in the UK for up to one academic year. The students’ views were elicited at the end of their stay with open-ended questionnaire items, and their verbal responses were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The analysis of the students’ reflections revealed a number of functions in each of the three areas, highlighting the potential of international student interactions as a viable source of L2 acquisition, L2 self-motivation, and intercultural learning during study abroad.
