Opis:
Lagoon gyttja layers occurring in anomalously high position (up to 2.5 m above the present-day sea level) The transition phase between the Ancylus and Littorina stages of the Baltic Sea is an old controversial topic. With the newest data available we try to reach a compromise between the "dramatic" model, including a sudden and large drainage of the Ancylus Lake, and the idea of a non-existing Ancylus drainage through Denmark. This new model includes a minor, perhaps 5 m, sudden erosion and forced regression slightly before 10,000 cal. yrs BP. This was followed by a 200–300 yr long period when the outlet through Denmark and Great Belt (Dana River) was characterized by a variable fluvial environment creating fluvial, levée and lacustrine deposits. During this period of rapidly rising sea level, we postulate that the gradient between the Ancylus Lake and sea level gradually decreased from some 5 m until sea level had reached the Ancylus and Darss Sill level. After this point in time occasional pulses of marine water could easier enter into the Baltic basin, which is seen as brackish pulses as early as 9800 cal. yrs BP in records from the Bornholm and Gotland basins, but also from Blekinge. It would, however, take another c. 1500 years before the Öresund threshold was flooded by the rising sea level, causing a significant rise in salinity sometime between 8500–8000 cal. yrs BP, and marking the true onset of the Littorina Sea.

Opis:
The waters of the Celebes Sea are an area that has quite complex dynamics because it is influenced by several factors, either regionally or globally. This influence certainly has an impact on variations in oceanographic conditions in waters such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and sea currents. Currently, there are many observations of oceanographic data, one of which is by using remote sensing methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the seasonal variations in sea surface temperature and sea surface currents in the Celebes Sea using a remote sensing system in a time series for 5 years (2014-2018). The results of this study indicate data on seasonal variation of SST and sea surface currents have an average maximum SST value for 5 years occurring in the eastern season and the second transitional season (May, June, July) with an average value range of 30.6 °C - 31.1 °C and the average maximum sea current velocity for 5 years occurs in the western monsoon with a value range of 0.72 m/s - 0.77 m/s. The high SST value and sea current velocity are caused by the influence of the season which causes variations in the ongoing rainfall, also presumably due to the opposite direction between the monsoon wind and the direction of the main current flowing in the Celebes Sea.

This paper describes the application of methodology based on the artificial neural network technique to make short-term wave forecasts. The neural network model is used to predict significant wave height at a selected location on the Baltic Sea based on wave and/or wind data at ten points scattered on the sea. High quality hindcast data were used in the process of developing the forecast methodology. The data originated from the WAM4 wave model. The results show that the neural network technique allowed significant wave height to be predicted accurately. The agreement obtained by a comparison with a testing data set was sufficiently good to confirm the effectiveness of this approach.

Salt is obtained in various regions of the world and using differing technologies. The origin of the salt and its production methods influence its composition, properties and application possibilities. In recent years, sea salt has attracted a lot of interest, as it is commonly believed that it is richer in minerals than pure evaporated salt. One of the oldest methods of extracting edible salt in the world is the evaporation of seawater. Salinas are found in coastal zones of seas and oceans around the world. The salt obtained in the salin is transported to its destination by various means of transport, including sea transport. Taking into account the classification of sea cargo, salt is classified as solid mass cargo, and due to the physicochemical properties of salt, the transport of this product by sea requires security. The aim of this study was to present selected quality parameters of sea salt that are important in its transport and storage. Parameters relevant from the point of view of transport, storage, technology and processing, which are important in shaping the quality of sea salts were compared in salts obtained in various European salinas vs. Himalayan salt. These parameters included water activity, degree of granulation and discharge angle and embankment angle. The paper also presents the characteristics of sea salts from microscopic analysis and an assessment of the correct labeling of the product, which is important for the consumer of the packaged product. In land transport, not only sea salt is transported in bulk, but also the product in commercial packaging, most often weighing 1 kg.

This article presents the results of diatom studies from three cores taken from the Arkona Basin. The main stages of the Baltic Sea evolution in the Holocene – Ancylus Lake, Mastogloia Sea, Littorina Sea, and Post-Littorina Sea – were identified in diatom assemblages. The transition stage between Ancylus Lake and Littorina Sea, called Mastogloia Sea, was not such a long period as in the Mecklenburg Bay but was essential in the evolution of the Baltic Sea. The most pronounced feature of this period was an increase in the number of halophilous species, which reflected the existence of the littoral environment at the onset of this stage. The appearance and development of halophilous species was stimulated by stepwise inflows of saline waters. The composition of diatom assemblages reflected natural eutrophication of the Baltic Sea during the Littorina Sea stage.

This study aims to describe and reveal ocean system dynamics in Sulu and its surrounding seas. Data were used based on historical in-situ datasets which involve their physical characteristics with temperature and salinity data downloaded from the World Ocean Database (WOD). Sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, seasonal T-S plots, and caballing coefficient were used to distinguish water-mass types. At the same time, water column stability was analyzed based on the Brunt-Vaisala Frequency (N2). The results revealed that the three areas were influenced by a seasonal variation. The Sulu Sea affected by the SCS and the Pacific Ocean, including local waters from the Philippines. The SCS waters have lower SST (28 °C) and salinity (33.4 psu) compared to other regions. During the South-East Monsoon, the thermocline layer is thicker compared to the North-West Monsoon in the Celebes Sea. Similarly, in the same area, there is a layer that is thicker than the others. There are at least five main water masses in these waters that originate from the SCS and the Pacific Ocean. There are five water-mass types found in the three regions. The most stable area is SCS with a buoyancy value of around 12 cycl/h in a 100-meter depth, and the buoyancy during SEM is more stable than NWM. Finally, WOD updated 2018 is valuable to analyze water mass dynamics, especially using temperature and salinity.

The aim of the paper is to review the ancient sources devoted to the sea monster called κάμπη (f. ā-stem). Some researchers believe that it is also attested as κάμπος (n. es-stem). The zoonym in question, so named by the reason of a similarity of the marine animal to a caterpillar, evidently derives from the verb κάμπτω ‘to bend, curve’. The dramatist and philosopher Epicharmus of Kos (ca. 530–440 BC) was probably the first Greek writer who mentioned the sea monster κάμπη. Such a supposition is confirmed by the gloss κάμπη· κῆτος παρὰ Ἐπιχάρμῳ, registered in Hesychius’ lexicon (5th–6th c. AD). According to most modern lexicographers, the alternative form κάμπος n. ‘a sea monster’ is attested in one literary work in the form of the genitive plural καμπέων (Lyc., Alex. 414). The author intends to verify whether the alleged variant κάμπος (n. es-stem) is an authentic lexical item or a doubtful guess.

The main findings of studies of the physical oceanography of the Gulf of Finland (GoF) during 1997–2007 are reviewed. The aim is to discuss relevant updates published in international peer-reviewed research papers and monographs, bearing in mind that a comprehensive overview of the studies up to the mid-1990s is available (Alenius et al. 1998). We start the discussion with updates on the basic hydrographical and stratification conditions, and progress in the understanding of atmospheric forcing and air-sea interaction. Advances in the knowledge of basinscale and mesoscale dynamics are summarised next. Progress in circulation and water exchange dynamics has been achieved mostly by means of numerical studies. While the basic properties of circulation patterns in the gulf have been known for a century, new characteristics and tools such as water age, renewal index, and high-resolution simulations have substantially enriched our knowledge of processes in the Gulf of Finland during the last decade. We present the first overview of both status and advances in optical studies in this area. Awareness in this discipline has been significantly improved as a result of in situ measurements. Our understanding of the short- and long-term behaviour of the sea level as well as knowledge of the properties of both naturally and anthropogenically induced surface waves have expanded considerably during these ten years. Developments in understanding the ice conditions of the Gulf of Finland complete the overview, together with a short discussion of the gulf’s future, including the response to climate change. Suggestions for future work are outlined.

In this work long-term probability of occurrence of maximum sea levels in some points of Polish Baltic Sea coast, was determined. Use was made of multi-year series of measurement data on maximum yearly sea levels, and their probability distributions were determined. To the analysis Gumbel’s distribution and Pearson distribution of 3rd type as well as quantile methods and the highest credibility method, were applied. Kolmogorov test was used to examine conformity of the theoretical distributions with real random variable distribution. As results from the analysis, the highest sea levels of 1000- year return period can be expected in Polish ports of the west part of the coast , i.e. Kolobrzeg (750, 2 cm , i.e. 2,5 m above the average sea level) and Swinoujscie (723,6 cm) . Lower sea levels of the same return period can be expected in Ustka (720,2 cm), Wladyslawowo (709,7 cm) and Gdansk (716, 7 cm), respectively.

The paper contains results of a in situ research main task of which was to detect objects buried, partially or completely, in the sea bottom. Object detecting technologies employing acoustic wave sources based on nonlinear interaction of elastic waves require application of parametric sound sources. Detection of objects buried in the sea bottom with the use of classic hydroacoustic devices such as the sidescan sonar or multibeam echosounder proves ineffective. Wave frequencies used in such devices are generally larger than tens of kHz. This results in the fact that almost the whole acoustic energy is reflected from the bottom. On the other hand, parametric echosounders radiate waves with low frequency and narrow beam patterns which ensure high spatial resolution and allows to penetrate the sea bottom to depths of the order of tens of meters. This allows to detect objects that can be interesting, among other things, from archaeological or military point of view.

Short-term measurements of nutrient and DOC concentrations and suspended matter (particles, chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, algae and ATP concentrations) carried out in seawater layers of varying thickness (10, 90, 250 μm and the underwater layer – 15 cm depth) in spring form the basis for a discussion of the diurnal fluctuations of nutrient and suspended organic matter concentrations. Quantitative and qualitative differences in the composition of neuston species were recorded in selected sub-layers of the chemically stratified sea surface microlayer. The non-linear regression equation was applied in a mathematical model of the diurnal fluctuations of nutrients and organic matter. Two maxima and two minima were found in the diurnal cycle of nutrient concentrations and organic suspensions in sub-layers of different thickness selected from the sea surface. The first maximum, expressed by the proliferation of phytoneuston, lasted from the very early morning till mid-morning. The second maximum occurred in the afternoon. The chlorophyll a concentration, and ATP and neuston abundance declined markedly around noon, when the biologically-damaging radiation dose increased, compelling the downward migration of organisms. At the same time, the photo-oxidation of dissolved organic matter intensified and the concentrations of inorganic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus rose. A shift (up to 2 h) between the maximum and minimum neuston concentration in these sea surface layers was indicative of phototaxis occurring within the entire surface microlayer and in the underwater layer. After sunset the decline in phytoneuston abundance could be related to zooplankton grazing as well as to respiratory breakdown.

Minimum rozwoju pokrywy lodowej wystąpiło w 1933 roku (1037 tys. km2).
The article present changes of sea ice extent during a period of time when they developed most (April) in the geographical area located between Greenland, Iceland and Spitsbergen during years 1901-1939 and 1945-1956 based on data shared by Danish Meteorological Institute. Surface calculations were made by using ArcGis 10.0 software, using geographical coordinate system North Pole Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area. Results of the calculations show high deviations of sea ice extent at investigated area. Biggest surface area noted in 1905, 1906 and 1911 and smallest in 1925 and 1930. Much smaller changes were observed and at the sea between Iceland and South-Eastern Greenland. During the period 1901-1939 a diminishing trend was observed there considering ice surface area. Years 1946-1956 remain with a stable amount of ice surface.

Generally, sea buckthorn species vary in their phytochemical composition, depending on the climate, and soils in which they grow. Sea buckthorn has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, due to its rich chemical composition. The leaves, fruits, and seeds of this plant are a rich source of bioactive compounds, such as vitamins (A, E, K, C, B1, B2), phenolic compounds (e.g gallic acid, catechin, quercetin, kaempferol), fatty acids (e.g linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, palmitoleic acid, vaccenic acid), amino acids (e.g glycine, isoleucine, cysteine, tyrosine, histidine, arginine), micro-, and macroelements. The presence of a large number of bioactive compounds results in a broad spectrum of biological activity. It has been shown that sea buckthorn has antioxidant, and anti–inflammatory properties, moreover it protects, and regulates cellular metabolism, has cardioprotective properties, and protective effect on skin cells. Research from recent years offers the hope that sea buckthorn preparations will be used in the treatment of, for example, skin burns, atopic dermatitis or abnormal cholesterol levels, but also as a support for the treatment of, for example, cardiovascular diseases.

The distribution, age and correlation of Pleistocene sediments (1.806–0.01 Ma) is presented for an about 1200 km long geologic cross-section that extends from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and crosses the eastern part of the Polish Vistula drainage basin, the Dniester and Upper Pripyat drainage basins of the Ukraine, and also parts of the Russian Kaliningrad District andMoldova. In the vicinity of Warsaw, the oldest Pleistocene deposits comprise preglacial fluvio-lacustrine sediments of the Otvockian (Eburonian) cooling and Celestynovian (Waalian) warming stages that equate in the south with the Berezan and Kryzhaniv horizons, composed of loessy clays, silts and red-brown palaeosol. Along the cross-section, deposits of 8 main glaciations correlate with a similar number of main loesses (Narevian–Ilyichivsk, Nidanian–Pryazovsk, Sanian 1–Sula, Sanian 2–Tiligul, Liviecian–Orel, Krznanian–Dnieper 1, Odranian–Dnieper 2–Tyasmyn, Vistulian–Valday) that are separated by 7 main intra-loess palaeosols that developed during the main interglacial periods (Augustovian–Shirokino, Małopolanian–Martonosha, Ferdynandovian–Lubny–Solotvin, Mazovian–Zavadivka–Sokal, Zbójnian–Potagaylivka, Lubavian–Lublinian–Kaydaky–Korshiv, Eemian–Pryluky–Horokhiv). The first three interglacials are megainterglacials, which possibly include cool intervals during which ice sheets did not advance beyond Scandinavia. All glaciations and loesses, as well as interglacials and palaeosols that are considered asmain climatostratigraphic units of the Pleistocene of Central Europe, are grouped into climatic cycles and megacycles that correlate with corresponding units of Western Europe.

Statistical studies of marine accidents and unfortunate events in ice-covered areas in 1995-2004 and 2004-2011 showed a general lack of information from the area under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation. The author’s research for the period 2004–2011 showed a large number of unfortunate events caused by lack of adequate provision of nautical charts, shortage of accurate position systems on board vessels as well as weak technical condition of these vessels. The author examined the problem of navigation safety on the Northern Sea Route in terms of availability of the official nautical charts and publications. The availability of official nautical publications supplied by global producers is more diverse and ambiguous than it is in case of nautical charts. Surprising is lack of Russian publications related to tides and unavailability of a guide for planning routes on Northern Sea Route issued by Russia in Russian and English languages. Global producers of official charts and nautical publications do not provide full range of information and recommend vessels the use of the products supplied by Russia. These products are issued in Russian. This is a serious impediment to their use and thus introduces privilege of ships’ crews who speak Russian. Northern Sea Route leads through regions that are not sufficiently explored. The Northern Sea Route Administration recommends guiding ships only on designated routes marked on maps and described in nautical publications. The currently hydrographic work is focused on determining new routes according to the spatial distribution of the ice massifs during the navigation season. However, this does not solve the problem of a comprehensive exploration of the Russian Arctic regions for the purpose of safe navigation on the customized routes.

The aim of this paper is to find connections between the digital game Sunless Sea (Failbetter Games, 2015) and Joseph Conrad’s novels, particularly the ones touching on the subject of sea voyage. Sunless Sea is an exploration role-playing game which focuses on the topics of sailors’ loneliness, dual nature of the sea, and above all, player’s inevitable failure. These tropes are shown not only in the narrative structure of the game, but also in its mechanics and design choices. I believe that the game is heavily inspired by the notion of maritime life created by Conrad, as indicated by the quote from The Mirror of the Sea opening the game: “The sea has never been friendly to man. At most it has been the accomplice of human restlessness.”

In the recent decade a number of data of different investigations (pollen, diatom, molluscs analysis, lithological investigations, dating by methods of absolute geochronology, etc.) have been collected during the large-scale geological mapping of Lithuanian Maritime region (Lithuanian Coast). The results of investigations confirmed that there were three Littorina Sea transgressions at the Lithuanian Coast: the first manifested approximately in 8500-7800 conventional 14C years BP, the second (maximal) - in 6200-5900 and the third - in 5300-4000 conv. 14C years BP. The Post-Littorina Sea maximum was in about 3600-3400 conv. 14C years BP. The Littorina Sea shoreline displacement curves were carried out. The present-day positions of shorelines of the Littorina Sea as well as other Baltic basins are displaced in different altitudes in separate parts of the Lithuanian Coast due to oscillatory neotectonic movements of Earth crust blocks during Late Glacial and Holocene.

Sediments, carbon-datings on seashells, allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the average sea level for some 6000 years on the Taman Peninsula. The current sea level, regionally, appears to be the highest level ever reached on the peninsula. It seems that for the Anapa area and Tchouchtchka Spit area it is possible to propose a sea level curve characterised by a slow, continuous rising during the past 6000 years. On the Taman Peninsula itself, the sedimentary record of this slow ascent has been distorted by a heavy tectonic subsidence. We have identified this neo-tectonic subsidence effect on at least two areas on the peninsula. The south of the peninsula, Burgaz Spit and Vityazevos Lagoon, is the most affected area. The Taman Gulf is an intermediate area. The tectonic subsidence is particularly noticeable from 1500 to 500 BC, which we believe to have been misinterpreted until now, and to be at the origin of the notion of "Phanagorian Regression".

The paper analyses experimental measurements of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra in different seawaters. The fluorescence parameters, calculated from LIF spectra as the ratio of the integrals of fluorescence and Raman signal intensities, provide information about the relative changes in the concentrations of fluorescing molecules. Gathered during several cruises in 1994–2004 in the Baltic and Nordic Seas, all the data are presented as scatter plots of the fluorescence parameters of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Satisfactory correlations between these two parameters were found a) for open Nordic Seas waters, b) for the southern Baltic in blooming periods only, and c) for the Gulf of Gdańsk in non-blooming periods only.

The results of the present study showed variability in resistance of FC bacteria isolated from beach sand and sea water against tested antibiotics. Enteric bacteria were the most resistant to clindamycin and penicillin while the most sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, neomycin, rifampicin and streptomycin. Fecal coliform bacteria inhabiting sand were more resistant to nearly all tested antibiotics compared to bacteria isolated from sea water. The majority of bacteria inhabiting sea water and sand of the studied beach were resistant to only 1-4 antibiotics out of the 12 antibiotics tested. Fecal coliform bacteria isolated from Ustka beach were the most resistant to β-lactam and lincosamide antibiotics, while the most susceptible to aminoglycosides.
Uzyskane wyniki badań wykazały zmienność w oporności bakterii z grupy coli wyizolowanych z piasku i wody morskiej wobec badanych antybiotyków.

Scale of changes of particular components of cryosphere due to global warming is presented. Cryosphere diminishes its spatial extend and the total volume of all kinds of ice is reduced. The Arctic sea ice cover has recently diminished most intensely. It reached its minimal extend (4.28 mln km2) in September 2007. One expects accelerated disintegration of sea ice of the Arctic as a result of coadjuvancy of oceanic and atmospheric factors. In consequence, more intense warming of climate coming from warmer ocean water is predicted in the Arctic basin. Increase of melting of glaciers during the last three decades results in decrease of their extend and thickness. Additionally, more meltwater is reaching bed of glaciers and is accelerating their flow velocity due to faster basal sliding. Such processes result in more intense breaking off the icebergs from fronts of glaciers terminating into the sea. Dynamic response of Greenland outlet tidewater glaciers has been detected after 2000 and it affects significantly global ocean level rise by ca 0.5 mm/yr. The Antarctic Ice Sheet is actually only insignificantly reacting to global warming. The paper discusses possible scenarios of the consequences of dynamic reaction of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet for increasing warming and slow sea level rise. Permafrost is reacting in a less distinct but detectable scale. The paper is giving not only description of consequences of climate warming for cryosphere, important impact of its spatial extend and features on atmosphere and oceans are considered either. A series of positive feedacks between  warming climate and cryosphere are listed. Described evolution of cryosphere is suggesting that distinct trend of climate warming is irreversible for the next centuries. One can also expect systematic rise of global ocean level as the consequence of glacier melting and dynamic transfer of ice masses based on land to the sea.

Sea ice conditions in the Baltic Sea during six latest winters – 2010/2011 to 2015/2016 are analysed using coupled ice– ocean numerical model 3D CEMBS (3D Coupled Ecosystem Model of the Baltic Sea). Simulation results are compared with observations from monitoring stations, ice charts and satellite data. High correlation between model results and observations has been confirmed both in terms of spatial and temporal approach. The analysed period has a high interannual variability of ice extent, the number of ice days and ice thickness. Increasing number of relatively mild winters in the Northern Europe directly associated with climate change results in reduced ice concentration in the Baltic Sea. In this perspective, the implementation and development of the sea ice modelling approach (in addition to standard monitoring techniques) is critical to assess current state of the Baltic Sea environment and predict possible climate related changes in the ecosystem and their influence for human marine–related activities, such as fishery or transportation.

Morphology of sea bottom of the Władysławowo area, from Karwia to Chałupy, has been studied based on the detailed digital bathymetric map prepared in a scale of 1:25 000 with isobaths every 0.25 m. A significant differentiation of the bottom relief has been observed, with the level changes up to 1-3 metres, mostly connected with the occurrence of specific systems of ridges and runnels. They are probably partly relict forms (fluvial and/or coastal?), changed to certain degree during the rapid stage of the Litorina transgression, and in partly forms created by the recent waves. Several types of the sea bottom surface, differing in pattern of morphological forms, have been recognised within inshore, near shore, and open sea (above 16 m depths) areas. The full knowledge of the origin and development of these relief forms requires further specialised research, currently carried out. Nonetheless, the already obtained picture of the sea bottom relief indicates an intensified abrasion of the offshore sea bottom, and an intensive, irreversible sweeping out of the sediments from the shore to the open sea, most probably by rip currents, at a distance up to several kilometres from the shore. It is in accordance with the results of a former large-scale (1:500) study of the sea bottom at the test field at Chłapowo, performed with the use of an integrated system of non-invasive and direct methods.

This paper presents the results of a Secchi depth data mining study for the North Sea – Baltic Sea region. 40,829 measurements of Secchi depth were compiled from the area as a result of this study. 4.3% of the observations were found in the international data centers [ICES Oceanographic Data Center in Denmark and the World Ocean Data Center A (WDC–A) in the USA], while 95.7% of the data was provided by individuals and ocean research institutions from the surrounding North Sea and Baltic Sea countries. Inquiries made at the World Ocean Data Center B (WDC–B) in Russia suggested that there could be significant additional holdings in that archive but, unfortunately, no data could be made available. The earliest Secchi depth measurement retrieved in this study dates back to 1902 for the Baltic Sea, while the bulk of the measurements were gathered after 1970. The spatial distribution of Secchi depth measurements in the North Sea is very uneven with surprisingly large sampling gaps in the Western North Sea. Quarterly and annual Secchi depth maps with a 0.5◦×0.5◦ spatial resolution are provided for the transition area between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea (4◦E–16◦E, 53◦N–60◦N).

Five years (1998, 2000–2003) of summer records of temperature, nutrients and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the upper 400 m of the water column of the northern Gulf of Aqaba were employed to produce a simple statistical model of the relationship between temperature versus nitrate, phosphate, silicate andd issolved oxygen concentrations. Temperature profiles in the upper 400 m during summer revealeda clear thermocline in the upper 200 m. This was reflected in nutrient ando xygen concentrations as nitrate, phosphate, and silicate increasedfr om the surface to deep water while dissolved oxygen decreased. The best fit relationship between temperature versus nitrate andphosphate was inverse linear and the best fit correlation between temperature versus silicate andd issolvedo xygen was fractional. The observedn utrient concentrations were shaped by a combination of the hydrodynamics and biological factors. Deep winter mixing and high nutrient concentrations dominate during winter. Shortly after the water stratifies in spring, the nutrients are drawn down by phytoplankton during the spring bloom and remain low throughout the rest of the year. The regression equations presented here will be useful in estimating nutrient concentrations from temperature records as long as the annual natural cycle is the main driver of nutrient concentrations and external inputs are insignificant. Deviations from these relationships in the future could provide insight into modifications in the nutrient concentrations probably resulting from new nutrient sources, such as anthropogenic inputs.

The paper discusses the scattering of radiation by a Baltic crude oil –sea water emulsion. The scattering spectrum calculated using the Mie solution in the spectral range from 380 nm to 730 nm is compared with the measured spectrum of light scattered through a right angle. Spectra in the wavelength range from 210 nm to 730 nm were measured using a spectrofluorimeter for fresh and stored samples of the Baltic crude oil emulsion. Scattering increases with wavelength in the UV range and then decreases slightly with the wavelength of visible light. The result of the calculation is similar to the measured spectra. Both the calculated and measured spectra display numerous relative extremes throughout the spectral area. Light scattering in the emulsion decreases during storage as the oil concentration in the medium diminishes. The results also demonstrate that the single scattering model describes the phenomenon correctly.

Opis:
Ecteinascidia thurstoni is a colonial sea squirt. It has a seasonal rhythm and a tropical and subtropical distribution; it is usually present during the summer months. It synthesizes a group of molecules called ecteinascidins. One of these is ET-743, a compound that has a most original anti-tumoral activity and is today considered to be one of the most promising substances effective against various solid-type tumors (currently sold under the trade name of Yondelis for the treatment of sarcomas and related tumors; it is undergoing phase II/III clinical trails for other kinds of tumors). Worldwide, Ecteinascidia species represent the only available source of this bioactive compound, which was first discovered in E. turbinata. During the present study, the ecology of E. thurstoni along the Suez Canal and Red Sea was investigated. Its populations were observed to be highly gregarious due in part to their low larval dispersal, which is very localized; larvae therefore tend to settle close to their parent colonies. It is only recorded in shallow waters (0.5–1.5 m) as an epiphyte on the pneumatophores of mangroves by the Red Sea, on the pilings of jetties, and the metal or cement banks of the Suez Canal. The morphometric characteristics (zooid length, zooid weight, colony weight) of the Suez Canal population differ significantly from those of the Red Sea. Studying the distribution of this species and locating its different populations along the Suez Canal and Red Sea could help to characterize their genetics, chemistry and bacterial communities at different isolated locations. Ultimately, this will help to define the sources of ET-743 and hence promote its biosynthesis on a commercial scale.

The aim of the paper is to analyze data obtained during sounding the Gdansk Bay sea bed by means of the parametric echo-sounder. The accuracy of the sea bottom structure investigation needs correct configuration of research equipment and proper calibration of peripheral devices (GPS, heading sensor, MRU-Z motion sensor and navigation instruments which provide necessary data to bathymetrical measurement system, enabling its work with full capability. The parametric sub-bottom profiler delivers two types of data which include different information: envelope and pure echo signal sampled without processing. The first is used to present echograms in real time and the second one is stored during sounding and the obtained data can be analyzed by using post-processing software. Differences in the results are presented and discussed. And, are described also criteria taken into account during determination of the measurement areas and selection of different configurations of the software according to the information to be obtained from trials. Complementary information can be achieved from processing the data by means of the procedures offered by Matlab software, which allows for a clear 3D presentation of the results. The consideration are illustrated by echograms taken in the natural conditions.

Opis:
Sea surface temperature (SST) and surface wind (SW) are considered the most important components in air—sea interactions. This study examines the relationships between SST, SW and various oceanic variables in the northern Red Sea (NRS) during the period of 2000— 2014. The current study is the first attempt to identify the SST fronts and their relationship with the dominant circulation patterns. SST fronts are mapped using the Cayula and Cornillon algorithms. The analysis is performed with available remote sensing and reanalyzed data together with 1/128 HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) outputs. Seasonal-trend decomposition procedure based on loess (STL) is applied for trend analysis, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is run for the atmospheric parameters. The SST, SW speed and Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) changes show insignificant trends during the period of 2000—2014. Meridional SST fronts are more significant during the month of January, and fronts that are perpendicular to the sea's axis occur from February to May. Distinct monthly and spatial variations are present in all the examined parameters, although these variations are less pronounced for the wind direction. The SST is mainly controlled by the air temperature and sea level pressure. Significant correlations exist between the SSTand the studied parameters (alongshore wind stress rather than the cross-shore wind stress, surface circulation, MLD, and Chl-a). Surface winds generally flow southeastward parallel to the Red Sea's axis explaining that alongshore wind stress is highly correlated with the studied parameters.

Three sediment cores (Loopsoo, Tihu, Prassi) from Hiiumaa Island (Estonia) were investigated using diatoms, lithological proxies, magnetic susceptibility, geochronological dates and incorporated with the previously studied Kõivasoo site, aiming to reconstruct the development of the island and shoreline changes during the Litorina Sea and the Limnea Sea. The highest level of the Litorina Sea shoreline near Kõivasoo is at 27.6 m a.s.l., and it occurred during the Initial Litorina Sea. Within the Litorina Sea transgression, 7800 cal yr BP, relative sea level reached 24.9 m a.s.l. at Kõivasoo, 24.1 m a.s.l. at Loopsoo, 23.6 m a.s.l. at Tihu, and 21.5 m a.s.l. at Prassi. Kõivasoo became isolated from the sea about 8500 cal yr BP, Loopsoo between 7100 and 6800 cal yr BP, Tihu around 4800 cal yr BP, and Prassi about 2500 cal yr BP. Presently gained data from Hiiumaa Island confirm that the Litorina Sea regressed consistently during the last 8000 years due to progressively declining isostatic rebound. The present study is also illustrated by 3-dimensional palaeogeographic maps of the Hiiumaa Island development.

An acoustic sea glider has been developed for ambient sea noise measurement and target detection through the deployment of an acoustic vector sensor (AVS). The glider was designed with three cabins connected in sequence and it can dive to depths exceeding 1200m. The AVS fixed on the glider measure acoustic pressure and particle velocities related to undersea noise, and the inner attitude sensors can effectively eliminate the estimation deviation of the direction of arrival. The inherent self-noises of the acoustic sea glider and AVS are presented respectively in respect to the Knudsen spectra of sea noise. Sea trial results indicate that the AVS could work well for undersea noise measurement when the glider is smooth sliding, and the target azimuth estimated by AVS after correction is remarkably consistent with the values measured by the GPS, and direction-finding errors are less than 10 degrees. The research in this paper shows that the acoustic sea glider is able to undertake tasks such as a wide range of underwater acoustic measurement and detection.

The annual cycle of atmospheric nitrogen species and macroelements (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Cl−) over the south-eastern Baltic region was investigated. A one-year record enabled the variability of nitrogen species and macroelements in the aerosol over the coastal station at Hel to be traced. The highest concentrations of sea salt components were recorded in summer, while anthropogenic nitrate concentrations were highest in winter. When the air masses were of mixed marine and continental origin, the nitric acid reacted with coarse sea salt particles to form stable, coarse sodium nitrate. This seems to be a permanent removal pathway for nitrate. Anthropogenic aerosol species like NH+4 or NO− 3 formed by gas-to-particle conversion were generally associated with fine particles (<1 μm). Coarse particles like sodium or chloride resulted from resuspension from seawater.

Two sediment cores from the Mecklenburg Bay and Arkona Basin were analysed in terms of their geochemical composition and stratigraphy. The main stages of the Baltic Sea evolution – Baltic Ice Lake, Ancylus Lake, and Littorina Sea – were identified in both analysed cores. The most pronounced period was the transition between the Ancylus Lake and the Littorina Sea. The character of the initial stage of the Littorina Sea was clearly defined in the Mecklenburg Bay sediments and is marked by a stepwise increase in loss on ignition and contents of biogenic silica, calcium, magnesium, iron, and strontium. The record of the onset of the Littorina Sea in the Arkona Basin sediments is marked by an abrupt change of the geochemical parameters. The age of the initial Littorina Sea in the Mecklenburg Bay was estimated at about 8200 cal years BP and was probably older than the transgression within the Arkona Basin.

The main goal of this paper is to describe the results of sounding the Gdansk Bay sea bed by using a SES- 2000 Standard parametric sub-bottom profiler. Quality of data obtained during trials depends inter alia on a proper location of transducer array to reduce influence of pitch, roll and heave motions as well as ship self noise (resulting from bubbles due to propeller and flow around hull, vibration generated by main engine and auxiliary devices). Furthermore, calibration of complementary units such as GPS, heading sensor, MRU-Z motion sensor and navigation devices make sea-bed investigating system capable of working with its whole capability. Results of so prepared surveys have been presented and discussed. They contain also an elaborated map of Gdansk Bay with preliminarily classified sea-bed materials and description of most interesting areas.

Opis:
According to their origin, geomorphology and hydrology, the fresh/brackish-water bays and coastal lakes of the Southern Baltic coast can be treated as lagoons. They developed at the time of and as a result of the Atlantic (Litorina) transgression of the Southern Baltica. There are many publications about the origin and evolution of the lagoons and lakes along the Polish coast of the Southern Baltic (e.g. Przybyłowska-Lange, 1973a, b, 1974, 1979, 1981; Zaborowska, 1977; Zachowicz, 1977, 1985; Wypych, 1980a, b; Zachowicz et al., 1982; Bogaczewicz-Adamczak, Miotk, 1985a, b; Dąbrowski et al., 1985; Zachowicz, Zaborowska, 1985; Borówka et al., 2001a, b, 2002). Nevertheless, the origin of the lagoons has not been fully explained. In the light of present-day information the results of earliest investigations often need to be reinterpreted. The aim of this work was the correlation of the published and unpublished pollen and diatom diagrams from Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments of the Southern Baltic lagoons, and their relation with radiocarbon dating. The pollen and diatom diagrams from the area of north-east Germany and the Curonian Lagoon (Kabailiene., 1999; Jahns, 2000; Kaiser et al., 2000; Endtmann, 2002; Bitinas et al., 2002) have been used for comparison. For the palynological sites, the local pollen assemblage zones (L PAZ) have been identified according to Janczyk-Kopikowa (1987). Comparison of the biostratigraphical data allowed us to define the approach time of the formation of the lagoons in their present-day position on the coast as well as to determine the periods of an accelerated sea-level rise and increased frequency of storm surges (so-called marine transgression phases) when the investigated areas had been under the direct influence of the sea. Such influences are visible about 7000, 6000, 5000 and 4000 years BP. This period of marine influences, about 1000-year long, corresponds very well to the same period of climate oscillations mentioned by Stuiver and Braziunas (1993), Stuiver et al. (1995) and Chapman and Shackelton (2000). The influence of the sea in the Post-Litorina period was associated mainly with the inflow of sea water through more or less developed barriers, so they are not synchronous.

Opis:
In the context of short-tenn sea ice forecasting, the model should capture as many of the synoptic features and as much of their variability. as possible. We are interested in the meso-scale properties and processes, i.e. thickness, consolidation, compactness, smoothness, accumulation of ridges, formation of leads and ice edge, drift and displacement, etc. Modelling and forecasting of synoptic ice formation are of interest to shipping as it affects route planning and the operation of icebreakers. With a view to conventional ice charting, the forecast problem might read: Given today 's ice chart, what will tomorrow 's ice chart look like? The model has to return meso-scale features, while essential smaller-scale mechanisms have to be parameterised. The problem in a meso-scale model is to adequately take into account the governing fine-scale mechanisms. Pack ice is a crushable fragmented aggregate, characterized by point-like contacts and stress trajectories. In compressible loading, even local traction forces, causing brittle failure, may be induced. The localization of stress and strain is a considerable complication! By way of localization, critical phenomena at singular points, affect the entire structure. Meaningful characteristics are integrity, state of damage (flaws, cracks). fragmentation and skeletal structure (fabric of fragments, strength of the structure). Structural properties and their evolution dun·ng the material history could be represented by suitably chosen internal variables. To reflect the state of degradation, fragmentation, consolidation, etc., special concepts are required for the damage mechanics of fracturing pieces and fragmented aggregates. Using such a vehicle, the meso-scale mechanics of sea ice could be accommodated in a continuum mechanics model. More elements have been worked out in plasticity.

Opis:
Position coordinate measurements are an intrinsic feature of navigation. These measurements include points on vessel's trajectory and trajectory derivatives: speed vector and acceleration vector. Due to the fact that systematic and random errors occur in both mathematical model of the navigation process and in specific measuring models, there is no full congruity of the results of measurements performed by various navigational instruments and systems. This work attempts at comparing trajectories, speeds and accelerations obtained by these' navigational devices and systems. The results may be used in examining the measurement reliability and the performance correctness of navigational equipment and system. The comparison of various sources of information also enables detection and identification of systematic errors. Consequently, mathematical models of particular phenomena and processes can be verified.

Opis:
Dead reckoning is one of the oldest methods of ship's position deternrination in sea navigation. Its advantages ara autonomy and possible integration with other position determination methods, in particular with the statistical model for working out measurements of navigational paranieters. Dead reckoning makes use of basic navigational instruments that every ship is equipped with, i.e. the compass and the log. Basieally, the method pertains to calculating ship's coordinates for a defined moment of time by means of the integration of ship's speed and acceleration in the case of analogue measurements, or by calculating the increment of the coordinates from differenlial equations in the case of discrete measurements of speed or acceleration. The present position is determined as a sum of the coordinates increments.

In this paper, parametric rolling is divided into 5 heavy grades, establishing a classification for parametric rolling. This is achieved by a multi-parameter application in the simulations. For this purpose, parametric rolling, established criteria and the state of the art are considered and the results are summarized. Based on this, parametric rolling is successfully simulated using discrete simulation in MARIN [1]. Five heavy grades are introduced so different classes of parametric rolling can be distinguished. Furthermore, dependencies and probabilities for the occurrence of parametric roles in relation to the see are determined numerically. This will later be used in an assistance system on board ships to compute the prediction of parametric roll using an AI.

Opis:
The article presents multi-component composite model of the sea surface which generalizes the standard two-scale model (small-scale gravity-capillary waves lying on the large-scale gravity waves). The suggested model considers the non-resonant backscatter from large-scale breaking gravity waves and resonant backscatter from the steep wavelets of meso-scale spectrum (meso-waves). The multi-component composite model differs from the standard two-scale composite model in that it involves the non-resonant components against the background of "macro-breaking" large-scale waves, or in the form of "micro-breaking" steep meso-waves. The main goal of this paper is to stimulate further analysis of the angular, frequency and polarization characteristics of the resonant and non-resonant backscatter mechanisms in order to distinguish between them.

Opis:
There is growing focus on multi-functional use of the marine environment. The solution presented is to combine different economic activities in ‘multi-use platforms at sea’ (MUPS). An expanding body of literature focusses on the economic, technical or social challenges that follow from combining these different functions at sea. Current Dutch policy sees MUPS as a promising way to make the most out of scarce space available but present rules and regulations not supportive of MUPS. To find the right mode of governance for developing MUPS one needs a discourse coalition with a shared definition of (1) the problem tackled, (2) the solution it brings, (3) the solutions envisioned (including design and user functions) and (4) the role of various actors in bringing about these solutions. In this article we present a discourse analysis of the North Sea on the governance of MUPS. It shows that there is no single shared discourse but that there are contesting views on what MUPS are or should be. Although some convergence of discourse takes place, the question whose problem is solved by MUPS remains unanswered: do they solve public problems such as nature conservation and spatial planning or are MUPS the solution to high Operation and Maintenance costs? This hampers the development of multi-use platforms at sea with neither public nor private actors willing to take the lead.

The response of semi-realistic wind speed increase scenarios to the mean sea level and current regime of semi-enclosed sub-basins in the Baltic Sea is studied with a 2D hydrodynamic model. According to the model output of spatial mean sea levels, an increase in the westerly wind component by 2 m s−1 leads, for example, to a mean sea level rise of up to 3 cm in windward locations in the study area. The sea level change patterns depend on the wind scenario and coastline configuration. The increases in wind speed considered here also lead to enhanced water exchange through the straits, strengthening of the basin-scale circulation, enhancement of up- and downwelling, and increased bottom stresses near coasts.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, jak zanikają ważne dotychczas funkcje małych polskich portów i przystani morskich. Dokonano tego poprzez analizę wielkości obrotów ładunkowych, liczby pasażerów międzynarodowych oraz pojemności brutto (GT) kutrów. Analiza obejmuje lata 1996-2018.
The aim of the article is to show how the hitherto important functions of small Polish ports and marinas are disappearing. This was done by analyzing the volume of cargo turnover, the number of international passengers and the gross tonnage (GT) of cutters. The analysis covers the years 1996-2018. It was found that the transhipments increased in Gdańsk, Gdynia and Świnoujście while decrease was observed in Szczecin and small ports. International passenger traffic (after a peak in 1997-2001 in some of them) is currently at a minimal level. Also after Poland’s accession into the European Union, the gross tonnage (GT) of the cutter fleet significantly decreased. Therefore, it is evident that Polish small seaports and marinas should look for new functions that may become their development factors in the future. Tourism, including yacht tourism, should become one of such functions.

The nodal tide in the Baltic Sea was studied on the basis of the Stockholm tide-gauge readings for 1825–1984; data from the tide gauge at Świnoujście for the same period provided comparative material. The Stockholm readings are highly accurate and are considered representative of sea levels in the whole Baltic; hence, the final computations were performed for the readings from this particular tide gauge for the period 1888–1980. The tidal amplitude obtained from measurements uncorrected for atmospheric pressure or wind field was compared with that forced only by atmospheric effects. The amplitude of the recorded nodal tide was the same as the equilibrium tide amplitude calculated for Stockholm. Calculations for equilibrium tide amplitudes were also performed for the extreme latitudes of the Baltic basin.

This study is an attempt to provide a comprehensive and synthetic characterisation of Słupsk climate based on a homogeneous series of daily measurements covering the longest possible period. Apart from the temperature and precipitation profiles derived from a 58-year examination record (1950-2007), the climate analysis also presents the distribution of other key weather components (atmospheric pressure, wind, relative humidity and cloud cover) in a shorter (1991-2007) time-span. The paper, which is a summary of the existing research into Słupsk climate, is directed not only at geographers (for whom it may be a significant reference in research concerning weather conditions in other Polish towns), but also at local residents and tourists, who choose Słupsk as their holiday destination.

Opis:
Maritime tourism should be understood not only as a system of fixed, maritime links and attractive cruises but also as individual yacht cruises, and many other forms of spending time on the water or under the water. A special type of tourism is maritime tourism, which includes features such as recreational fishing in the sea. Sport and recreational fishing became popular in Poland in the 90’s of last century. According to the data of harbor masters that keep records of fishing vessels out in the sea, the first effective service providers were the skippers from Łeba and Darłowo. The following study presents the development of specialized tourism in Poland which is fishing tourism with particular emphasis on Darłowo. Rules for organizing fishing trips, and the conditions that must be met in order to start this kind of business were discussed. Another important issues in the article include preparations of individual units for realizing tourist function, presenting additional services provided by the organizers of fishing cruises. On the basis of the survey research, the characteristic of fishing service users has been prepared, taking into account: motives and forms of arrivals, territorial origin of tourists, accommodation and length of stay.
Uczestnicy rejsów wędkarskich pochodzili z miast regionu środkowopomorskiego oraz z całego kraju, przede wszystkim z województw: dolnośląskiego, mazowieckiego, śląskiego i wielkopolskiego. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań jednoznacznie wskazują, że morska turystyka wędkarska staje się perspektywicznym stymulatorem rozwoju turystyki i czynnikiem aktywizacji społeczno-gospodarczej miast i gmin nadmorskich w Polsce.

Opis:
This work examines the multiscale variability in sea level along the English Channel coasts (NW France) using a wavelet multiresolution decomposition of water level values and climate oscillations in order to gain insights in the connection between the global atmospheric circulation and the local-scale variability of the monthly extreme surges. Changes in surges have exhibited different oscillatory components from the intermonthly (~3–6-months) to the interannual scales (~1.5-years, ~2–4-years, ~5–8-years) with mean explained variances of ~40% and ~25% of the total variability respectively. The correlation between the multiresolution components of surges and 28 exceptional stormy events with different intensities has revealed that energetic events are manifested at all timescales while moderate events are limited to short scales. By considering the two hypotheses of (1) the physical mechanisms of the atmospheric circulation change according to the timescales and (2) their connection with the local variability improves the prediction of the extremes, the multiscale components of the monthly extreme surges have been investigated using four different climate oscillations (Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Sea-Level Pressure (SLP), Zonal Wind (ZW), and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)); results show statistically significant correlations with ~3–6-months, ~1.5-years, ~2–4-years, and ~5–8-years, respectively. Such physical links, from global to local scales, have been considered to model the multiscale monthly extreme surges using a time-dependent Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. The incorporation of the climate information in the GEV parameters has considerably improved the fitting of the different timescales of surges with an explained variance higher than 30%. This improvement exhibits their nonlinear relationship with the large-scale atmospheric circulation.

Observed basic meteorological quantities, heat and radiation fluxes from three different measurement stations in the Baltic Sea are compared with model data of the coupled sea-ice-ocean model BSIOM in order to evaluate the atmospheric forcing, corresponding surface fluxes and the sea surface response. Observational data weremade available from the BASIS winter campaigns in 1998 and 2001 as well as from the r/v ‘Alkor’ cruise in June 2001. Simulated fluxes were calculated from prescribed atmospheric forcing provided from the SMHI meteorological database and modelled sea surface temperatures. The comparison of these fluxes with observations demonstrates a strong correlation, even though mean differences in sensible heat fluxes range from 4 to 12 W m−2 in winter and −25 W m−2 in the June experiment. Differences in latent heat fluxes range from −10 to 23 W m−2. The short-wave radiation flux used as model forcing is on average 15 W m−2 less than the corresponding observations for the winter experiments and 40 W m−2 for the June experiment. Differences in net long-wave radiation fluxes range from −5 to 12W m−2 in winter and −62W m−2 for the June experiment. The correspondence between measured and calculated momentum fluxes is very high, which confirms the usability of our model component for calculating surface winds and wind stresses from the atmospheric surface pressure.

International transport is a subject to many regulatory measures worked out by governments, international organisations (e.g. IMO, ILO, EU), regional institutions and public entities. As a result, such regulatory mechanism, which is getting throughout international, strongly affects the real sphere of maritime transport as well as its productivity and efficiency. Maritime transport operators have to apply to many new standards and rules set by international public regulators aimed mainly at improving and enhancing safety and security at sea. It is sometimes very painful process in terms of costs and time but inevitable to survive in the highly competitive environment. The author analyses the nowadays existing regulatory mechanism in maritime transport and tries to evaluate it in terms of its impact on effectiveness of maritime transport processes.

Opis:
Santos Port is located in Brazilian coast, in an estuarine area inside Santos Bay named Baixada Santista. The currents behavior is forced by tides. The resulting tidal level variability (high tide, mean sea level and low tide) recorded from Santos Dock Company tide gauge (1940 to 2014) shows a consistent increasing trend. The estimation about the magnitude of mean sea level rise (MSLR) in recommendations, guidelines or requirements issued by different countries and agencies from 1990 provide examples of different approaches used around the world in comparison with the local trends obtained for Santos Port. It is concluded that MSLR will have a considerable impact upon the port and adjacent areas, with approximately 1.0 m rise estimated from 1990 to 2100. Baixada Santista is a lowland situated a few meters upper from the sea level and some areas are possible to be submerged in the end of this century. Not only the wetlands of mangroves will be affected, but also the infrastructures, residential zones and the port will face problems. The major SLR impacts upon port operation will be the reduction of freeboard of the quays, flooding of storage yards (and other low storage areas) and of the internal transport tracks or rails. Also the increasing sedimentation in the nautical areas of access channels, turning basins and berths, will induce more maintenance dredging.

It is generally agreed that fine structure and microstructure are usually beyond the resolution of numerical models. Nevertheless, corresponding processes have a considerable influence on water dynamics and exchanges in the Baltic Sea. Measurements of fine structure were carried out with the scanning CTD probe. Microstructure measurements were performed by towing a system with fast-response velocity, conductivity, and temperature sensors. Bottom turbulence was investigated with the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Domains of high mixing and stining activity were revealed by means of high-resolution profiling on temperature and salinity transects. These domains were found near inhomogeneities of bottom relief such as the Słupsk Sill, the bottom elevation on eastern boundary of the Słupsk Furrow and in areas of ray concentration of quasi-inertial internal waves. Data on transects with manifestations of convection provide an evidence of the non-uniform distribution of turbulence in the upper layer. A bottom turbulence patch with duration of about 2 hours was registered over the slope of the Gotland Deep. The rate of turbulent energy dissipation is about ]105cm2/s3. In the area of Hamrarne and Słupsk Sill, horizontal scales of turbulent patches are between O(10m) and 0(100 m). All obtained data testify the high level of turbulent intermittency, so probability of detecting turbulent patches is high.

Results of underwater noise records completed with single and multi-hydrophone systems performed in the shallow water in the close vicinity of shipping lanes to the Gdansk/Gdynia and Świnoujście/Szczecin harbours are presented. Due to the fact that the bottom properties, bathymetry, and temporally varying sea surface alter the original sound spectra and reduce the acoustic energy, the sound transmission losses have been modelled, and an attempt to predict source levels of ships was performed. The KRAKEN sound propagation model illustrates the problems of the recognition of sources noise spectra on the basis of observations in a far zone from the sources. On the basis of the observed noise data, jointly with the AIS system the potential ecological effects of anthropogenic underwater noise on marine organisms are given for the Pomeranian Bight. In the paper, some examples of algorithms of ship noise recognition are given.

The starting point of this article is to compare the sea and the life, which for people from the Mediterranean culture was something completely natural. Bearing in mind the numerous statements of the Fathers of the Church, we try to discover the source of such beliefs. We do this based on the three most popular marine allegories: the sea, the boat and ‘rescue board’, which stayed for good in patristic though. Because of the theme of the work we drew attention only to those elements which are obviously useful in better understanding of the patristic interpretation of the pericope about ‘Stilling of the Storm’. Special attention was given to the three groups of texts about: ‘boat of the State’, ‘boat of the soul’ and ‘boat of the world’, which could have a tangible influence on forming the thought of the Fathers of the Church associated with the symbolism of the Church boat. The way in which the Fathers of the Church use the complex symbols of Hellenist world shows theirs keen interest in current matters of the ordinary men and influence which faith rendered on their lives in the individual, as well as social dimension. The ancient symbolism inherent in the maritime assets in the context of patristic exegesis and constitutes an indelible part of theology of the original Church. The proper understanding is therefore of great importance for the correct interpretation of patristic writers’ views, particularly their views on the Church.

The purpose of the article is to do a literature review and present own experience regarding the main causes of ophthalmic injuries in sailors and crew workers. Sailors and sea workers often use heavy equipment when working on a vessel, offshore platform or other. Using these types of tools often carries high risk of injury. They are also exposed to various chemicals, many of which are eye irritants. Ophthalmic injuries are common but rarely fatal. They can lead to vision loss, reduce the quality of life and inability to continue work. The categorized types of these injuries and included chemical, mechanical, electrical, diving related barotrauma and infections. We present the most common cause of these types of injury, situations in which they can occur, pathomechamism of eye damage, recommend a prevention method, recommend the possible first aid and present cases in which specialized treatment in a reference hospital is necessary.

The depletion of inland deposits of natural resources and the increasing demand for some raw materials have resulted in the growing interest in deep sea exploitation of natural deposits. This gives an impulse to the mounting research and development of methods of exploitation of natural deposits from the sea and ocean floors, which are not limited to petrol and gas. The main area of difficulty in opencast mining methods conducted at considerable depths is the transportation process from the sea floor to the surface. The methods employed so far, such as continuous line bucket (CLB), hydraulic pumping (HP) and air-lift pumping (ALP), have both advantages and disadvantages. The most salient problem is their considerable energy consumption resulting in great costs, hence the need for the development of less expensive methods. The authors have suggested a new method, involving the use of pyrotechnical materials as a source of energy in the transportation from the sea floor and have presented its theoretical grounding. Special emphasis has been placed on determining the depth to which the method can be applied and the energy needed in transportation in relation to the density of the transported substance (output).

Opis:
This paper presents a functional model of river-sea ships (shortly called: SRM) operating in European system of transport corridors. It is composed of two parts: Part I contains a descriptive model of functioning the SRM fleet with taking into account various shipping tasks as well as impact factors (external and internal factors, limitations and criteria). Also, a mathematical model of functioning the SRM fleet, including choice of relevant economic criteria (e.g. profit maximization, capital return period minimization etc), is presented. Results achieved on the basis of the functional model are presented in Part II of the paper.

Opis:
This article presents the development of sea ice cover in the waters of central and western part of the Hornsund Fjord, as well as in its foreshore during winter season 2006–2007. Due to long lasting (November-March) high air temperatures (Fig. 1) the sea ice cover development of Hornsund was different from the average one. Significant decrease in air temperature was observed only in April (mean monthly –8.7°C). In such thermal conditions the maximum thickness of sea ice which might have been formed in the outer, sheltered from high seas areas of the fjord, estimated with the help of Zubov formula, could reach 47cm in January, 58cm in February, 66cm in March, up to 77–80cm in the period from April to May 2007 (Tab.1). In summer and autumn 2006 only brash glacier ice and small icebergs broken off the glaciers endings on the sea in Hornsund drifted in the waters of the fjord. At this time brash glacier ice and growlers broken off the Hans Glacier periodically concentrated densely along the coast of Isbjorhamna. The first forms of new ice (slush and grease ice as well as shuga) were observed close to the west coast of Isbjornhamna from 6th October till 3rd November. The second period of sea ice formation started on 7th December. However, the ice disappeared quickly because of strong winds. Not sooner than in the middle of January when severe frost was noted, a permanent ice cover was formed (young ice). But also this ice was broken and diverged in most part of the fjord. Fast ice was only observed in the internal waters of Hornsund, in the Brepollen, Burgerbukta and Samarinvagen bays. From the third decade of February till the end of April the ice cover of Hornsund experienced large fluctuations. During that period the entire area of Hornsund was covered with sea ice a few times. This phenomenon was noted when the allochtonic ice drifting in the waters of the Sorkapp Current entered western and central part of the fjord and when the central and inner parts were covered with ice formed in situ. This sea ice cover was several times destroyed by very strong east winds causing that most of ice was moved outside the fjord. At the beginning of May very strong E and SE winds caused ice removal from the axial part of Hornsund. Later, apart from two short episodes (19-29 May and 22-23 June) when open strips of allochtonic ice entered west and central part of the fjord, only single floes of broken-off the fast ice from Brepollen, Burgerbukta and Samarinvagen drifted in the waters of Hornsund. The ice season 2006/2007 ended on 19th July when the last floes of very rotten ice were observed drifting from the inside of the fjord with the tidal stream to its foreshore.

Synthesis and New Conception of North Sea Research (SYCON) is the title of a German project carried out from 1998–2000 under the leadership of Hamburg University1. It was accompanied by an international advisory board and covered North Sea issues as well as the general challenges to shelf sea research and sustainable management under global change. Particular emphasis was placed on the interdisciplinary analysis of comprehensive areas of knowledge: the data situation, understanding of processes, model development, instruments and methods, understanding of the system. Based on this, perspectives for future North Sea research were developed. The project produced a synthesis report, eleven monodisciplinary reports and an illustrated brochure for the general public (see Annex 1, this paper, p. 258).

Opis:
The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.
