Not only has the quantity (i.e. in terms of the extension of the duration of life) become the aim of action on the health plane, but also the qualitative, or extending the duration of lifein good health, which is not accompanied by disability and life activity limitations due to health. To estimate changes in health status of the population, implemented health programs and medical care needed new health measures. Meters beyond the negative indicators on mortality and life expectancy, but also including other dimensions of health status and quality of life related to health. This group of measures is called summary measures of population health and is divided into two main parts: the measure of the health expectancies and measures of health gap. The aim of the article is a presentation and use of selected health summary measures for estimating life expectancy in good health of Polish population against the background of the population of the European Union countries. Data from the Central Statistical Office and the European Statistical System as well as database and publications prepared by the World Health Organization and the United Nations will be a base of empirical analysis.

Opis:
Health of the population is one of the basic factors of social development. The results of empirical studies indicate a number of factors determining the level of health of the population related to access to health care services, the level of environmental pollution and the wealth of society. It must be assumed that the observed disparities in the health depend on distributions of particular determinants. The aim of the article is to assess the significance of the main factors affecting the occurrence of spatial disparities in the level of social development districts NTS-4 in terms of health of the population. The analysis was based on estimates of the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) which takes into account the impact of neighborhood spatial units on level of dependent variable and the explanatory variables. The size of the level of social development in terms of health of the population in the study was approximate by the aggregate value of the index, which is the local component of the Local Human Development Index LHDI.

Background Lean healthcare management is an innovative approach to process management in healthcare organizations. Despite that the Lean principles have been increasingly recognized worldwide as a tool to boost organizational performance, improve the quality of care and curb waste, the Lean methodology can be difficult to implement in some countries. This study seeks to identify the facilitators of and barriers to the implementation of Lean in the healthcare system in Poland. Material and Methods A public consultation was held among 318 representatives of stakeholder groups in the healthcare system in Poland. Data was collected using validated self-administered questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. Results The study revealed that a large share of respondents believed that the awareness of the existing organizational deficiencies in work practices among stakeholders can greatly facilitate the implementation of Lean in the healthcare system in Poland (50.9%, p < 0.05). The main barriers to the deployment of Lean include lack of awareness of the Lean methodology and its benefits (76.1%, p < 0.001); insufficient institutional support (43.7%), and lack of funding for Lean solutions (32.4%). Conclusions Gaps in the medical curricula and education programs for healthcare professionals concerning the latest process management solutions in healthcare should be addressed in order to raise awareness of the benefits of cooperation with and the active involvement of Lean experts in applying “lean” ideas to improve the organizational performance in healthcare. It is also necessary for policy makers to be aware of the benefits of contemporary process management in healthcare and to support its implementation. Med Pr. 2023;74(1):1–8

The analysis of the number of died men and women of different age per 100 000 persons of the corresponding sex from 1985 to 2002 in the city Kyiv was conducted. It is established that in the wide range of ages the phenomenon of the morbidity ratio of persons of different age is of a non-linear character. It is found the availability of the significant effect (19,6%; p<0,001) on the degree of this ratio. Four specific periods, associated with different possible mechanisms of the effect of the psychoemotional strain on the human body, have been specified in the dynamics of the sex ratio. It is established that the psychoemotional factor affects persons of different age groups specifically. In this, its effect on persons of able-to-work age, is the most threatening. A quantitative assessment of the population health of different age groups with due account of mortality ratio of persons of different sex has been proposed. The explanation of changes of sex ratio in populations, based on the theory of evolution in their development, is presented.

Authors identified nutritional and clinical risks and investigated their effect on population health in Slovakia within more than the last 40 years. The results were supported by nationally representative, nutrition researches conducted on more than 20 000 people. Simultaneously, the following factors were studied: average lipid blood levels; prevalence of dyslipidaemia, obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM) and colorectal carcinoma in Slovak Republic; and the results of 4 dietetic tests (pectin + ascorbic acid, essential phospholipids, powder from Pleurotus ostreatus, and flavonoid preparation). As a result some improvement measures were suggested for the population in terms of nutrition, some regulation changes were proposed in food and nutritional policy, and finally some proposals were addressed to food processors.
Autorzy określili aktualne zagrożenia żywieniowe i kliniczne, badając ich wpływ na stan zdrowotny populacji ludności Słowacji w ciągu ponad czterdziestu lat. Wyniki uzupełniono rezultatami badań żywieniowych przeprowadzonych w skali kraju na grupie ponad 20 000 osób. The authors deals with the health of the EU population. The health of the Slovak population has improved since 2000, but it still lags behind the EU average. Slovaks live longer, but differences in life expectancy by gender and socio-economic groups persist. In the Slovak health care system, care is provided to all residents, although access to it is limited in some regions and quality and efficiency can improve in many areas. Most Slovaks report good health, but there are differences according to income groups. About two thirds of the Slovak population report good health, a ratio similar to the EU average, but higher than in most neighboring countries. Background. Health education is one of the main cores of primary health care (PHC). However, there is limited evidence on the difficulties of implementing health education programs. This study explored the barriers of implementing health education programs in Iranian rural communities. Objectives. A qualitative study with conventional content analysis approach was conducted. Applying purposeful sampling, 34 rural folks and health care providers were employed to participate in the study. Data were collected through individually, semi-structured interviews. Data analysis continued until data saturation, when no new theme or idea emerged. Material and methods. A qualitative study with conventional content analysis approach was conducted. Applying purposeful sampling, 34 rural folks and health care providers were employed to participate in the study. Data were collected through individually, semi- -structured interviews. Data analysis continued until data saturation, when no new theme or idea emerged. Results. Four themes, including “Ineffective teaching and learning processes”, “Lack of health educators’ motivation”, “Communication gaps”, and “Lack of resources and facilities for teaching and learning” emerged as the barriers of implementing health education programs in rural communities. Conclusions. Several executive and communicational problems were identified as the local-level obstacles of implementing health education programs in rural areas. Better understanding on the extensive range of health education barriers in rural areas may be helpful for rural health workers and stakeholders in designing and/or revisiting health education programs in rural communities.

The topicality. The indicators of life quality are undetermined and unstandardized; the problem of determination of a single quantitative meaning of the quality of life remains unsolved. The aim of the research – to describe modern approaches to determining the quality of life and on their basis to propose a comprehensive theoretical model for the explanation of life quality phenomenon and the role of health in its formation. Methods: analysis and synthesis of scientific literature, documentary data; methods of theoretical research (analysis, synthesis, specification, classification, historical method, comparative analysis, system and structural analysis). The results: It has been proved that the quality of life is closely related to the health of human beings and it includes physical, mental and social being, considering the beliefs, expectations and world outlook. Based on the theoretical analysis and synthesis, it proposes the multicomponent structure of the quality of life, taking into account both positive and negative aspects of life, common to people of different sex, age, and state of health. Domains, sub-domains, indicators, and variables were defined as the main components of the model. Physical Component, Mental Component, Social Activity, Material Component, Development and Identity, Environment were assigned to the components of the highest level. The health-related quality of life was separated as the single part of the model. Conclusions and recommendations for further research. The theoretical model based on the principles of consistency, hierarchy, equality, determinism, unity of internal factors and external conditions was developed.
Wykorzystano następujące metody badawcze: analiza i synteza literatury naukowej i danych dokumentacyjnych, metody teoretycznych badań naukowych (analiza, synteza, specyfikacja, klasyfikacja, metoda historyczna, analiza porównawcza, analiza systemowa i strukturalna).

The primary goals of the study were a critical analysis of the concepts associated with health from the perspective of sustainable development, and empirical analysis of health and health- related issues among the rural and urban residents of Eastern Poland in the context of the sustainable development of the region. The study was based on the following research methods: a systemic approach, selection and analysis of the literature and statistical data, developing a special questionnaire concerning socio-economic and health inequalities among the population in the studied area, field research with an interview questionnaire conducted on randomly-selected respondents (N=1,103) in randomly selected areas of the Lubelskie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie and eastern part of Mazowieckie Provinces (with the division between provincial capital cities – county capital cities – other cities – rural areas). The results of statistical surveys in the studied area with the use of chi-square test and contingence quotients indicated a correlation between the state of health and the following independent variables: age, life quality, social position and financial situation (C-Pearson’s coefficient over 0,300); a statistically significant yet weak correlation was recorded for gender, household size, place of residence and amount of free time. The conducted analysis proved the existence of a huge gap between state of health of the population in urban and rural areas. In order to eliminate unfavourable differences in the state iof health among the residents of Eastern Poland, and provide equal sustainable development in urban and rural areas of the examined areas, special preventive programmes aimed at the residents of peripheral, marginalized rural areas should be implemented. In these programmes, attention should be paid to preventive measures, early diagnosis of basic civilization and social diseases, and better accessibility to medical services for the residents.

Introduction. Quality of life (QOL) is an important aspect of life, reflecting health and conditioning the well-being of older adults. Maintaining the QOL is essential in times of demographic changes which resulting longer life spans, and consequently an increased proportion of older adults in society. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life and its basic determining factors in the elderly living in rural areas of south-eastern Poland. Material and method. The study was conducted on 973 respondents aged 60–80 years living in rural areas of south-eastern Poland (Podkarpackie Region). The research tool used in the study was the WHOQOL-Bref and a questionnaire on personal characteristics and health. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica version 10. Results. All quality of life domains assessed were above the median values of the scale. The highest values were found in the social domain (67.35 ± 17.31) and the lowest values in the physical domain (58.74 ± 14.80). All the quality of life values decreased with an increase in age and increase in number of chronic diseases in a given person. A higher quality of life was found in subjects who were physically and socially active. Conclusion. The study stresses the impact of modifiable determiners of QOL. Interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of older adults should involve interdisciplinary monitoring of health, early treatment of diagnosed problems, and promotion of physical activity and daily life activities.

Poor sleep was found in 45.0 % of the students. Mild depression was established in 6.9 %, moderate in 2.3 %, Severe in 0.8 % of the students. Mild anxiety was found in 19.1 %, moderate in 14.8 % and Severe in 7.9 % of the students. Depression (score ?8) was significantly more frequent among third (fourth) year students (22.2 %) with poor sleep, as compared to the students demonstrating good sleep (2.7 %). Marine engineering programme students whose sleep was poor more often had depression (22.0 %), as compared to the students whose sleep was good (5.7 %). Conclusions. Seafarers have higher hospitalization and mortality rates than age-matched peers, due to exposure to unique occupational health risk factors. Maritime students had poor sleep more than anxiety or depression. Anxiety and depression were more common among the students demonstrating poor sleep rather than good sleep.

The population ageing is an universal problem concerning all countries in the world, not only in Europe. The main sources of this process are decreasing fertility and increasing life expectancy. The migration has additional impact on ageing in some countries. The ageing of population means many new challenges in the field of economy and society. The quality of life of older people and the entire population as well depends on how countries will meet these challenges and how societies will adapt to the changing demographic conditions. Longer life can mean activity, health and participation, but it depends on properly planned activities in many areas of social and economic life. The phenomenon of ageing and the consequences associated with them are extremely complex and multilateral issues. The presented article focuses on the comparision of the process of ageing in different continents and countries, particularly in Poland. It concerns the problem of the ageing impact on labour market and health care sector as well.

Te inicjatywy, choć słuszne, wymagają jednak zintensyfikowania, by objąć swoim zasięgiem jak największą grupę ludności wiejskiej, szczególnie dzieci i młodzieży. Threats to the health of villagers, including children, in the context of the work carried out on the farm AbstractThe degree of exposure to disease and injuries among the rural population is different in the case of urban residents. This is due to environmental conditions, as well as the specifics of the work. It is worth emphasizing that, still a large number of children are exposed to bodily harm as a result of engaging their use for dangerous workor exceeding their capabilities. In 2012, 168 million children worldwide involved in jobs, and 85 million children were involved hazardous work. Branch of economic activity in which children usually work, is agriculture. [1]In Poland, the work of children in a family farm is socially acceptable. Although the share of children in these classes can undoubtedly have a positive impact on their health work in the countryside it is often associated with numerous dangerous to life and limb injuries. There are a number of institutions that carry out activities aimed at minimizing health risks among the villagers. These measures consist, inter alia, implementation of health programs based on education. These initiatives, though correct, however, intensify the need to embrace its reach as the largest group of rural population, especially children and adolescents.

Opis:
Wstęp Każdego roku w Polsce wykonuje się w celach przewidzianych w Kodeksie pracy prawie 5 mln badań profilaktycznych osób pracujących. Celem badania przeprowadzonego przez autorów artykułu było uzyskanie opinii pracowników na temat celowości poszerzenia zakresu tych badań o profilaktykę chorób cywilizacyjnych (m.in. działania edukacyjne dotyczące zdrowego stylu życia). Materiał i metody Anonimową ankietę na temat rozszerzenia opieki o działania profilaktyczne dotyczące chorób cywilizacyjnych i nowotworowych wypełniło 325 pracowników. Zaproponowano uzupełnienie badań przeprowadzanych w celach przewidzianych w Kodeksie pracy o oznaczenie we krwi pobranej z opuszki palca glikemii przygodnej i cholesterolu całkowitego oraz wykonanie pomiaru obwodu brzucha i zapisu elektrokardiograficznego (EKG). Med. Pr. 2019;70(4):425–433
Background Every year in Poland almost 5 million prophylactic examinations (PEs) are carried out by occupational medicine specialists (OMPs) among workers, for the purposes envisaged in the Polish Labour Code. The aim of this study was to collect workers’ opinions on the possible extension of these check-ups in the field of prophylaxis and prevention of civilization diseases (CivDs), focusing also on the “healthy lifestyle” recommendations. Material and Methods The study group comprised 325 employees who filled out an anonymous questionnaire containing questions about the possible extension of the PE scope for CivD and cancer prophylaxis. During medical check-ups, evaluation of the incidental glucose (IG) and total cholesterol (TCh) levels, waist circumference measurement and electrocardiography (ECG) were proposed. The respondents were asked about the most interesting issues for discussing with OMPs. Results Screening tests for some cancers (69.5%) and risk factors for CivDs (61.5%) were indicated as the most interesting topics to discuss with OMPs. The possibility for evaluating the levels of IG and TCh during PEs was approved by approx. 94.8% and 95.3% of the respondents, respectively. Almost 96% accepted having ECG and 80% agreed to waist circumference measurement. As many as 89.5% of the respondents supported the idea of organizing physical activities at their workplaces, and 77.8% were eager to learn about “healthy lifestyles” during training sessions conducted at their workplaces. Conclusions Restricting the aim of PEs just to certifying the ability to work, or identifying certain medical contraindications, means losing a chance for implementing the prophylaxis and prevention of diseases’ development among active working subjects. The kinds of activities proposed by the authors of this publication have been approved by the employees. Med Pr. 2019;70(4):425–33

Intestinal parasitic diseases in Gaza Strip are a significant health problem. The main aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of parasitic infection among patients in the five governorates of the Gaza Strip. A crosssectional parasitological survey was conducted on 600 patients. Stool specimens were examined microscopically for the presence of parasite eggs or larvae/cysts per wet amount by the saline iodine and formol-ether concentration method. Of 600 subjects examined, 245 (40.8%) were infected with one or more intestinal parasites. Entamoeba histolytica/dispar and Giardia lamblia were the most prevalent parasites amongst the population (28.8%), (9.5%). Female patients demonstrated a higher prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (42.7%) than males (39.0%). However, this difference was not significant (p>0.05). According to occupation, the rate of infection was highest among farmers (56.0%), followed by employers (44.2%) with laborers showing the lowest rate (30.17%). These differences in occupational prevalence were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The present study demonstrates that intestinal protozoan infections are still a public health problem in the Gaza strip, with Entamoeba and Giardia infections being most common. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective prevention and control strategies, including health education and environmental sanitation improvement.

Demographic changes affect practically all dimensions of socio-economic life. Dynamic ageing of the Polish population and double ageing create new challenges, both in the individual and collective dimensions, in the field of preparation for old age. The emergence of new social issues and intensification of the existing ones make it necessary to implement new solutions. The increased and constantly growing percentage of old people and the oldest old creates many new challenges not only for public authorities, but also for entrepreneurs and employers. Due to the complexity of the consequences of the demographic changes, the subject of the article are the consequences for four selected areas: the labour market, social security, health care, and long-term care.

The coronavirus pandemic affects the whole world. This situation is a very challenging time for all humanity and social services no less. The present article explores how care and different forms of support can or should be offered to young people in the post-COVID-19 youth work. The objective of this paper is to reflect on how social work practitioners can adapt their daily clinical practice by focusing their interventions on the social pedagogical dimensions of social work. The article presents a generalised discussion of practice logics in social work and social pedagogy. Because of the meanings derived from knowledge on the importance of relationships between the helper and the help receiver, social practices in the post-COVID-19 world need to consider social pedagogical expertise in social work practice and the development of preventive assistance for young populations. This effort has been prepared as a part of the project “Social Professionals for Youth Education in the context of European Solidarity”.

Background The aim of this work is to provide empirical evidence regarding types and increasing prevalence of mental disorders affecting Polish working population in the years 2014–2016. The research questions concerned the specific characteristics of the types of mental disorders and their prevalence as well as the differences between males and females. Material and Methods Types of mental disorders were investigated using a clinical method, a structured interview, as well as medical record data gathered in the years 2014–2016 in one mental health treatment center. The study was conducted in the population of 1578 working individuals aged 18–64 years old, in various forms of employment, including flexible employment (self-employment, task assignment agreement) and contract employment. The research population consisted of 998 females and 580 males, aged 18–64 years old. The study aimed at investigating types and the prevalence rate of mental disorders developed in the examined working Poles, also with reference to the sex of the study participants as well as the age at which they started seeking treatment. Results The prevailing disorders include neurotic disorders; diagnosed according to the 10th Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) classification as a range of anxiety disorders, mixed anxiety-depressive disorders, stress-related and somatoform disorders; as well as personality disorders. The prevalence rate of the aforementioned disorders was found to be higher among working females than in the group of working males. Conclusions The overall study conclusions based on the research data analysis point to the fact that the prevalence rate of various types of mental disorders displayed by the examined working males and females increased significantly in the years 2014–2016. The use of polluted water bodies for recreation poses a risk of infectious diseases. This fact necessitates taking into account bacteriological indicators to determine the danger of recreational water use. The aim of the article was to develop a new method for assessing the potential risk to population health during recreational water use. A new method for assessing the potential risk to population health during recreational water use has been proposed, which combines the identification of potential risk according to chemical and bacteriological indicators. A new classification of water hazard levels according to the values of risk to population health has been developed. The value of the potential risk to the population health during the recreational use of 6 beaches in the urbanized territories of the city of Kharkiv and its suburbs (Ukraine) was obtained. It was established that bacteriological contamination has the probability of a very large impact on public health (hazard class 5). To compare the methods of assessing the risk to population health during recreational water use, the hazard index (NI) was determined according to the chemical indicators of the quality of water bodies in the city of Kharkiv. The use of the assessment of the potential risk to population health for the environmental regulation of the discharge of pollutants into a water body with wastewater is justified.

Introduction and objective. One of the main factors determining the burden of breast cancer is the effectiveness of measures taken to combat this cancer including urban-rural differences. The aim of the study was to analyse the differences in breast cancer incidence and disease stage distribution among urban and rural women in the Świętokrzyskie Province as a part of a strategy for breast cancer control. Materials and method. The study of disease stage distribution included 483 female residents of Świętokrzyskie Province who were diagnosed in 2013 with invasive breast cancer, and reported to Świętokrzyskie Office for Cancer Registration. Urban-rural differences in breast cancer incidence in 2002–2013 were presented using Range Ratio (RR). Changes in incidence trends in urban and rural areas were analysed using joinpoint models. Annual Percentage Change (APC) of the rates was calculated for each time trend. Results. Breast cancer incidence rate in the urban female population was higher than in rural women with RR, amounting to 1.43. However, the analysis of trends showed that the pace and direction of change were developing negatively among inhabitants of rural areas. In 2002–2013, in rural women, the age-standardized rate (ASR) values increased by 2.8% per year (p<0.05). The course of ASR trends showed statistically significant urban-rural differences (p=0.004). Analysis of urban-rural differences in disease stage distribution revealed a non-significantly higher proportion of cases with localised stage in urban than in rural areas, amounting to 51.0% and 43.9%, respectively. Conclusions. Existing health inequalities indicate the need to intensify activities in rural areas and should be the starting point for making key decisions in combating breast cancer.
