    We study smoothness spaces generated by maximal functions related to the local approximation errors of integral operators. It turns out that in certain cases these smoothness classes coincide with the spaces $C^α_p(ℝ^d)$, 0 < p≤∞, introduced by DeVore and Sharpley [DS] by means of the so-called sharp maximal functions of Calderón and Scott. As an application we characterize the $C^α_p(ℝ^d)$ spaces in terms of the coefficients of wavelet decompositions.

    In the present paper, we study in the harmonic analysis associated to the Weinstein operator, the boundedness on $L^p$ of the uncentered maximal function. First, we establish estimates for the Weinstein translation of characteristic function of a closed ball with radius $ε$ centered at 0 on the upper half space $\mathbbR^{d-1}× ]0,+∞[$. Second, we prove weak-type $L^1$-estimates for the uncentered maximal function associated with the Weinstein operator and we obtain the $L^p$-boundedness of this operator for $1 < p ≤+∞$. As application, we define a large class of operators such that each operator of this class satisfies these $L^p$-inequalities. In particular, the maximal operator associated respectively with the Weinstein heat semigroup and the Weinstein-Poisson semigroup belong to this class.

    For d > 1, let $(S_{d}f)(x,t) = ʃ_{ℝ^n} e^{ix·ξ} e^{it|ξ|^d} f̂(ξ)dξ$, $x ∈ ℝ^n$, where f̂ is the Fourier transform of $f ∈ S (ℝ^n)$, and $(S_{d}*f)(x) = sup_{0 < t < 1} |(S_{d}f)(x,t)|$ its maximal operator. P. Sjölin ([11]) has shown that for radial f, the estimate (*) $(\int_{|x| < R} |(S_{d}*f)(x)|^p dx)^{1//p} ≤ C_{R}∥f∥_{H_{1//4}}$ holds for p = 4n//(2n-1) and fails for p > 4n/(2n-1). In this paper we show that for non-radial f, (*) fails for p > 2. A similar result is proved for a more general maximal operator.

    Let $M_{g}^{+}$ be the maximal operator defined by $M_{g}^{+}⨍(x) = \underset{h>0}{\text{sup}} (ʃ_{x}^{x+h} |⨍|g)/(ʃ_{x}^{x+h} g)$, where g is a positive locally integrable function on ℝ. Let Φ be an N-function such that both Φ and its complementary N-function satisfy $Δ_2$. We characterize the pairs of positive functions (u,ω) such that the weak type inequality $u({x ∈ ℝ | M_{g}^{+}⨍(x) > λ}) ≤ C/(Φ(λ)) \int_ℝ Φ(|⨍|)ω$ holds for every ⨍ in the Orlicz space $L_Φ(ω)$. We also characterize the positive functions ω such that the integral inequality $\int_ℝ Φ(|M_{g}^{+}⨍|)ω ≤ \int_ℝ Φ(|⨍|)ω$ holds for every $⨍ ∈ L_Φ(ω)$. Our results include some already obtained for functions in $L^p$ and yield as consequences one-dimensional theorems due to Gallardo and Kerman-Torchinsky.

    In this paper, we discuss a class of weighted inequalities for operators of potential type on homogeneous spaces. We give sufficient conditions for the weak and strong type weighted inequalities sup_{λ>0} λ|{x ∈ X : |T(fdσ)(x)|>λ }|_{ω}^{1/q} ≤ C (∫_{X} |f|^{p}dσ)^{1/p} and (∫_{X} |T(fdσ)|^{q}dω )^{1/q} ≤ C (∫_X |f|^{p}dσ )^{1/p} in the cases of 0 < q < p ≤ ∞ and 1 ≤ q < p < ∞, respectively, where T is an operator of potential type, and ω and σ are Borel measures on the homogeneous space X. We show that under certain restrictions on the measures those sufficient conditions are also necessary. A consequence is given for the fractional integrals in Euclidean spaces.

    We give characterizations of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $B_{pq}^{s}(Ω)$ and $F_{pq}^s(Ω)$ in smooth domains $Ω ⊂ ℝ^n$ via convolutions with compactly supported smooth kernels satisfying some moment conditions. The results for s ∈ ℝ, 0 < p,q ≤ ∞ are stated in terms of the mixed norm of a certain maximal function of a distribution. For s ∈ ℝ, 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, 0 < q ≤ ∞ characterizations without use of maximal functions are also obtained.

    There are given necessary and sufficient conditions on a measure dμ(x)=w(x)dx under which the key estimates for the distribution and rearrangement of the maximal function due to Riesz, Wiener, Herz and Stein are valid. As a consequence, we obtain the equivalence of the Riesz and Wiener inequalities which seems to be new even for the Lebesgue measure. Our main tools are estimates of the distribution of the averaging function f** and a modified version of the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition. Analogous methods allow us to obtain K-functional formulas in terms of the maximal function for couples of weighted $L_p$-spaces.

    Let X be a completely regular space and let A(X) be a ring of continuous real-valued functions on X which is closed under local bounded inversion. We show that the structure space of A(X) is homeomorphic to a quotient of the Stone-Čech compactification of X. We use this result to show that any realcompactification of X is homeomorphic to a subspace of the structure space of some ring of continuous functions A(X).

    For a wide class of weights we find the approximative point spectrum and the essential spectrum of the pointwise multiplication operator $M_φ$, $M_φ(f)=φf$, on the weighted Banach spaces of analytic functions on the disc with the sup-norm. Thus we characterize when $M'_φ$ is Fredholm or is an into isomorphism. We also study cyclic phenomena for the adjoint map $M'_φ$.
