Opis:
The author presents selected ventures in the area of climate change mitigation and adaptation that negatively affect indigenous peoples. Against this factual background, she analyzes relevant international legal regulations. Such an analysis enables the answer to the main research question: can climate change adaptation and mitigation actions be the justification for disrespecting the rights of indigenous peoples? The research method adopted is legal- -institutional analysis which includes an examination of the content of legal and other documents. Combined with critical analysis of literature and media reports this analysis allows representation of the reality – violations of the rights of indigenous peoples as a part of efforts to counteract climate change. Recommendations and main findings include: climate change adaptation and mitigation measures may not justify violations of the rights of indigenous peoples; such measures have to be developed in collaboration with indigenous communities; indigenous peoples’ rights may not be perceived as a factor hindering the State’s economic development or an obstacle to environmental protection; indigenous knowledge should be included in the strategies to combat climate change. Indigenous peoples should be regularly consulted by policy makers so that the their traditional knowledge is incorporated in decisions regarding these matters.

Opis:
Departing from the traditional representations of the colonial past and its aftermath, speculative fiction emerges as a new important trend in the North American Indigenous literary landscape, allowing Native writers to represent decolonial futures. This article focuses on the representations of the future offered by two recent Indigenous speculative novels: Louise Erdrich’s Future Home of the Living God (2017) and Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning (2018), in the context of their decolonial potential. The analysis of the selected literary texts pays special attention to the status of women and its revision, as well as to the re-narrativization of space in the face of the anthropogenic climate change, and their significance to Indigenous decolonial project. In order to facilitate the discussion of the Indigenous speculative novels, the article refers to recent theories in Native American studies concerning Indigenous futurism, Native dystopia, and definitions of decolonization.

The article is aimed at presentation of the case study in video games creation by Indigenous auteur and designer, Elizabeth LaPensée, which at the same time demonstrates how video games can both mediatize the process of re-writing history and decolonize popular imagination. The analysis of LaPensée’s three games: Invaders, Thunderbird Strikes, and When the Rivers Were Trails to some extent follows her own strategies of self-identification as Anishinabee (Ojibwe). Drawing upon reconfiguration of the auteur theory and the framework of ludostylistics by Astrid Ensslin, we also strive to demonstrate how the notion of a singular author is in fact grounded in collective and collaborative qualities of indigenous digital culture, including digital game design.

Aboriginal Australians last in the age of perdition. There has been 224 years since the day that Captain Arthur Phillip came to Australia with British convicts. Since then almost every day Aboriginal ‘collide with civilization’ and fight for surviving. All rules of tribal life had to be replaced by new ones. They had to wear clothes, live in houses of bricks, and work. All of this was completely different from the previous life. ‘White civilization’ that has brought the development into the Antipodes has also brought reasons of perdition. Among those: illnesses, which decimate Aboriginal clans, and alcohol, which destroys all residues of ancient Stone Age culture and causes many social problems. For several dozen years, Australian government has been trying to make up for Aboriginal wrong, but programs for improvement of their situation do not work. ‘Civilization’, in social evolutionists’ opinion, should be the highest level of people’s culture, for Aboriginal though it is some kind of abyss in which they cannot or they do not want to find a proper place for themselves.

The purpose of the article is to highlight the serious challenge of living in the Anthropocene era. Recognizing humans as a force of geological significance, it is also necessary to take into account our responsibility for the state of the world and the search for ways to adequately deal with the threat posed by the deepening degradation of the planet, which is ultimately likely to lead to the disappearance of the human and many other species. One way to deal with the danger is to change the way we describe the situation and find a new language for expressing our new attitude to reality. The path proposed in the text is to step out of the framework of the Western perspective and look to numerous indigenous visions of the world for ways of thinking about, describing, and existing in the world that are different from the one that led to the catastrophe. Keywords: Anthropocene; Capitalocene; culture; indigenous cultures

Indigenous peoples have been misrepresented and underrepresented in media since the dawn of cinema, but they have never stopped telling their own stories and enacting agency. It is past time to recognize them on their own terms. To facilitate that, academics, activists, and industry partners can fund, hire, teach, and share more Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) led projects. The uniqueness of 2020 with COVID-19, Black Lives Matter and human rights movements, and the move online by many academics and organizations have deepened conversations about systemic inequities, such as those in media industries. To address the often-heard film industry excuse, “I don’t know anyone of color to hire,” the Nia Tero Foundation has created Kin Theory, an Indigenous media makers database, that is having a dynamic, year-long launch in 2021.Nia Tero is a global nonprofit that uplifts Indigenous peoples in their land stewardship through policy and storytelling. Kin Theory is being developed to be global in scope, celebrating the multiplicity of Indigenous national cinemas and the power of narrative sovereignty. This paper demonstrates ways in which Kin Theory is striving to Indigenize the film industry through collaborations, coalition building, and co-liberation joy. The projected outcome of this study is to highlight how Kin Theory has the potential to increase access to Indigenous media makers, strengthens relationships, makes media works more visible, and increases support for BIPOC-led projects. This paper discusses the impacts of media misrepresentations and erasure, the foundations of Kin Theory, and introduces the potential for Indigenous national cinemas and narrative sovereignty. By reporting on the launch of Kin Theory at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, strategies for Indigenizing the film industry are also discussed. Throughout it is argued that decolonization is not a salvage project, it is an act of creation, and diverse industry leaders are offering new systems that support this thriving revitalization.

This paper is a discussion of the theoretical conceptualization of past landscapes and the limitations of archaeology in providing objectivistic interpretations. Analyzing a case study of the Dewil Valley landscape I will argue that the sciences about the past emerged based on the “Western” research paradigm. Therefore, local ontologies are often overlooked in archaeological narratives. In this article, I will present the ontologies of the indigenous Tagbanua people, contemporary beliefs related to the landscape, and theoretical approaches presented by researchers. I will argue that ontology can be complex and ambivalent, and that archaeological sources do not always indicate these dynamics.

Participation in the market of Indigenous Chickens (ICs) enables farmers an opportunity to generate income and alleviate household food insecurity. The objectives of the study were to profile the socioeconomic characteristics of smallholder farmers and; to determine the factors influencing participation of smallholder farmers in the market of ICs. The study employed purposive and snowball sampling techniques to identify 50 indigenous chicken farmers in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality, South Africa. Descriptive statistics and Binary Logistic regression model were employed to address the objectives of the study. The results revealed that, most smallholder farmers do not participate in the market of ICs. Moreover, experience in rearing chickens, land size, number of chickens owned, and purpose of rearing the chickens were found as factors influencing participation of farmers in the market of ICs. The study also confirmed that female farmers dominate in the market of ICs when compared to males. This, therefore, calls for government intervention in the promotion of ICs markets to encourage participation by farmers thus improving livelihoods.

The aluminium contaminated soil is currently being a concern due to the use of aluminium waste as a material for building roads and river dams in Jombang District, Jawa Timur Province, Indonesia. This application was debated because aluminium waste is categorized as hazardous waste. One widely known method for treating the metal contaminated soil is bioremediation. One potential indigenous bacterial species to remove aluminium, Vibrio alginolyticus was isolated from contaminated soil. A toxicity test to V. alginolyticus showed that this bacterium could grow in aluminium contaminated soil until 100 mg/L equal to 48 mg/kg concentration. The removal of aluminium from soil was conducted by using 50 and 100 mg/L concentration. The result showed that the addition of 2% v/v of V. alginolyticus can remove 5.48% aluminium from 100mg/L contaminated soil initial concentration after 12 days of test period. The addition of V. alginolyticus did not significantly influence the removal of aluminium from contaminated soil (p>0.05).

Opis:
The author in this study tests the applicability of basic categories of Leon Petrażycki’s (1865–1931) socio-psychological theory of law, pointing at ambiguity of the concept of ‘indigenous law’, ‘natives’ law’ and ‘customary law’. First, however, the right to one’s own law is followed through the history of colonization. It is essential for the plight of the indigenous people that already in 1537 Popes recognized that ‘original inhabitants’ had ‘rights’ and thus ‘legitimate claims’. If, on the one hand, there are ‘rights’ and ‘rightful claims’ then, on the other, there are duties that include not only the negative refraining from appropriation but also the positive duty to protect in exchange for the impairing the indigenous sovereignty. But whenever the nexus iuris is recognized, i.e. the link of correlative rights and duties, there is a law (Petrażycki) and ‘inherent – even if impaired, or as some say, abused – sovereignty of the indigenous people’ (Justice Marshall). The pluralist notion of ‘law’, the distinction between the ‘normative positive’ reference and the ‘normative intuition’ and the distinction between the ‘normative’ and the ‘factual’ should allow one to organize systematically the multiple issues that one encounters when approaching the area of ‘indigenous law’. From discussion of the official nonindigenous indigenous law exemplified by the federal Native American law of the United States the paper moves on to discuss the Navajo case of the official tribal law. It comes out that the native procedures and law are full of religious meaning so the ‘cultural’ sovereignty is much more fundamental and value-loaded than the secular philosophy of human rights incommensurable with the right to one’s own law. This is not considered when borrowing from native law into secular Western law (Greenland’s Criminal Code; mediation procedures in North America). The meaning of cultural sovereignty is the right to develop one’s law so that it fits one’s needs and aims. But the full success story is when the antithesis of the ‘indigenous’ and ‘dominant’ law is settled through the feedback from the former to the latter, like when the law – not only of a country but also on the global level – becomes syncretic and embraces deeper universalization of the human rights.

I focus on the discursive strategies within Two Spirit events and groups that center the definition of ‘Two Spirit’ first and foremost as an Indigenous identity by using both unifying/mass terms (Native American, glbtiq) and culturally & community specific terms (specific tribe names, Two Spirit). Rather than selecting a “right” term, such conversations highlight the constant, simultaneous positionings negotiated by Two Spirit people in their daily lives, and the tensions between recognizability and accuracy; communality and specificity; indigeneity and settler culture; and the burden multiply marginalized people carry in negotiating between all of those metaphorical and literal spaces. Drawing on Simpson’s (2014) concept of the politics of refusal, I demonstrate how Two Spirit individuals utilize available categories of identity, not as either/or binaries but rather as overlapping concepts- differentiated along micro- and macro- scales- to refuse attempts to both reduce the Two Spirit identity to one that is based either in gender or sexuality, and the appropriation of the identity and movement by non-Indigenous individuals and groups within broader national and global queer movements.

The objective of this study accomplished a knowledge survey of the Bororo indigenous on the birds of natural occurrence in their territory, Meruri village, who is located in the Mato Grosso State, Brazil, in the Savannah biome, and also the relationship of the indigenous with these birds. As the method for collect, the data were used open and semi-structured interviews. Twenty-two indigenous were interviewed, both genres and different ages. The interviewees mentioned 96 species of birds and they showed wide ecological knowledge regarding these birds. Such relationships are complex, being evidenced by a mythical interaction between the man and the elements of nature. These birds are important elements in the creation of stories, legends, in the Bororo ceremonies and arts. The oral transmission of knowledge occurs across generations.

African indigenous chickens (IC) though commonly kept by households in rural areas for consumption and sale, their contribution to rural livelihoods is generally overlooked. Literature suggests that IC production plays a vital role in rural communities of South Africa as an important source of animal protein and income. Despite these claimed benefits, production of indigenous chickens in Alice and other parts of South Africa’s rural areas is very low. This study used a cross-sectional survey of 120 households who keep IC in Alice communal area. The multivariate probit model was employed to investigate the factors that determine the choice of indigenous chicken owned by rural households. Results reveal that, gender, age, household size, association membership, access to formal markets, access to veterinary services, access to informal credit, access to formal credit and diversity score drive ownership of different indigenous chickens at household level. Thus far, the paper argues that, promotion of ownership of indigenous chicken at household level calls for strategic institutional alignment and a clear understanding of social demographic characteristics of the targeted community, which should be supported by several awareness campaigns and client based selection of indigenous chicken breeds of socio-economic importance to the household.

Global warming is a fact. The reason for this can only be a guess. There are hypotheses claiming that the climate changes are consequences of human activities. Other hypotheses say that such occurrences appear regularly every few thousand years. As early as the beginning of the twentieth century some scientists noticed indicators of the growth of the global average temperature. Regardless of the reason global warming is observable mostly in polar areas. Nowadays about four million people live in the Arctic including native inhabitants. Global warming impacts on all of these including indigenous peoples of the Arctic whose cultural identities have always been related to nature. They have always lived in harmony together with nature, they have been a part of it and have never tried to fight against it. A changing climate can make them give up the way their ancestors used to live. Afterwards it can cause the disappearance of their languages and cultures that languages are parts of. Besides for many decades all indigenous people had been thought to be at a lower development level than new arrivals so today almost all languages spoken by indigenous peoples of the Arctic are endangered. All indigenous peoples of the Arctic have common points in their histories like deprivation of lands and suppression of languages and traditions. Most of their ancient customs and religions are forgotten but there are many material marks that are important for future generations. It is very important to preserve the marks and the knowledge of their languages because the value of them is priceless. Today native inhabitants of the Arctic live in countries with various law regulations so their situation is different in each country. Some of them have some autonomy, but others still seek it.

This article explores the development in Bolivia under president Evo Morales, through a critical postcolonial approach. From a traditional liberal perspective, this article concludes that the liberal democratic system under Morales has not been deepening, though certain new participatory aspects of democracy, including socio-economic reforms have been carried out. In contrast, this article analyses to what extent the presidency of Evo Morales may be seen as the end of the postcolonialism, and the beginning of a new era in which Bolivia’s indigenous people finally have been incorporated into the forward development of a multi-ethnic society. By analysing issues such as time, nation, land, space, globalization and language, the conclusion is that the new constitution marks a fresh beginning, one beyond the colonial and postcolonial eras, for indigenous groups, but it will not bring back the old indigenous societies as was dominating the territory of today’s modern state.

The history of development and modern forms of functioning of education for indigenous minorities in Alaska reveal trends which appeared in other areas of the Arctic. The systematic activity of education, along with the influence of other state institutions (military, offices), and also the often destructive influence of religious organizations contributed to irreversible changes in the ethnic awareness of indigenous communities. They have resulted in permanent changes in the ethnic identity of peoples inhabiting the Arctic for thousands of years. Initially, education was used by churches in the process of Christianization. Then, education was used to indoctrinate state ideologies (in particular national ones). And although currently various ethnic and national groups in the areas of the High North have opportunities in the sphere of using their own language and protecting their identity, the criteria for social promotion through the education system have remained unchanged. As a consequence, even representatives of large ethnic groups are determined – in their education and life choices. Nowadays, the drama of indigenous minorities living in Alaska and other minorities in the polar regions continues, and we cannot expect it to end in a “constructive” manner. The dilemma of “preserving identity” in the conditions of a multi-ethnic society does not lose its focus. Individuals from indigenous communities usually have to choose between achieving educational and socio-professional success (as part of the dominant majority system) and the attachment to their traditional culture.

In this article, we show how the category of shamanism may be useful in the analysis of social practices of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon. We demonstrate that an expanded understanding of shamanism, as present in the contemporary Amerindian anthropology, allows for a better understanding of cultural phenomena that have hitherto been interpreted in terms of interethnic relations or educational research. We focus on two phenomena seemingly distant from ontology and religion. The first involves the constitution of social relations in a contempo[1]rary indigenous multi-ethnic society (Arabela, Peru), the second is related to the education of children and adolescents in residential Indian schools (E’ñepá, Venezuela). We will show that in both areas one may find shamanic understandings of corporeality and patterns of relations with Others, with controlled bodily transformation playing a key role.

This paper sheds light on intersections between teaching and research in the Cybercartographic Residential Schools Land Memory Atlas (RSLMA), which is the central output of the Residential Schools Land Memory Mapping Project (RSLMMP). Building on previous work in Cybercartography, the RSLMMP has further contributed to the integration of research and education and the emergence of new research and education relationships. Viewing the atlas as a project output comprised of iterative processes along multiple dimensions allows us to appreciate limitations as challenges for further iterations, including new related projects and ongoing volunteer work with students. In addition to participating in the national response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Calls to Action, this project - including the atlas - provides a model for a unique blend of teaching and research and the basis for further and new collaborations with a variety of different partners, including Residential School survivors. As a reconciliation project, the Residential Schools Land Memory Atlas further contributes to the intercultural bridge building aims of its parent, the Lake Huron Treaty Atlas, as it forges on in new directions.

Jelutong Kapur and Sanaman are indigenous species at peat swamp forest. These plants have a great economic value. Besides the benefits from wood and sap, leaves can be used for medicinal purposes. The study aimed at obtaining the information related to the potential, distribution and increment diameter. This information was expected to be taken into consideration in the management and development of Jelutong. The study was conducted for 12 months in 12 observation plots, each plot measuring 100x100 m. The data were analyzed descriptively, while the growth patterns were shown graphically. The results showed that there were 100 Jelutong Kapur trees with a range 0–17 trees/plot, an average 8 trees/hectare. It was higher than Jelutong Sanaman, where there were 65 trees with a range of 0–13 trees/plot, an average 5 trees/hectare. However, jelutong Kapur had a diameter range 10.58–35.08 cm, the average increment diameter is 0.69 cm/year, the highest in the diameter class 10–15.9 cm and 22–26.9 cm which is 0.68 cm/year. It is lower than Jelutong Sanaman the diameter of which ranges within 12.61–37.13 cm, the average increment diameter is 0.77 cm/year, the highest increment in the class diameter of 10–15.9 cm is 0.85 cm/year. The highest and lowest number of trees is the same both in the diameter class 16–21.9 cm and 10–15.9 cm. The base area of Jelutong Kapur was 0.41789 m2/hectare, while in the case of Jelutong Sanaman it was 0.30422 m2/hectare. In both of them the 16–21.9 cm diameter class, is dominant, i.e. constitutes 40%. Both species may potentially support the economy for the local people, especially at forest periphery.

Bestrewn with relics of subjugation, the frameworks that hinge on social progress have failed to appraise the plight of the marginalized in the democratic discourse. This is the case in the Philippines, as in other fringed spaces caught in hegemonic world-building. In this setup, emancipation is anchored in salvific attempts – salvaging the marginalized from a messianic standpoint. This tends to produce a pejorative image of the marginalized as incapable of self-determination. I argue in a three-part discussion: (1) reexamine the locus of the margin in critical theorizing; (2) retrace the act of recognition vis-à-vis the emancipative struggle; (3) present that the lifeworld of the marginalized offers redemptive alternatives for emancipation. Further, I argue that this offers a foremost framework in critical theorizing at the margin since their situatedness affords a stance that has not formed a patina of the West but is primarily informed by their rich local periphery.

The pond slider Trachemys scripta is one of the most widespread alien turtle species in the world. Its unregulated trade and the consequent uncontrolled releases into the wild led to negative impacts on the native turtles of the invaded areas. In Italy, alien pond sliders are widely spread, and the occurrence of hatchlings and well-established populations is known in some areas. However, to date in Sicily, only a single female of Trachemys scripta laying eggs was reported. Besides that, nothing is known about the actual reproduction success and establishment of self-sustaining T. scripta populations in Sicily. Therefore, based on 14 previously characterised highly polymorphic microsatellite loci, we aimed to unravel if the alien turtles successfully reproduce in Sicily, in both natural and semi-natural areas (i.e., lake “Biviere di Gela” and “Parco d’Orléans”, respectively). Our results show a clear structuring of the two studied populations. Several full-sibling relationships between the sampled turtles were found, suggesting actual reproduction in the wild of the pond sliders in Sicily. However, further sampling is desirable since no parent-offspring relationships were observed in the studied populations. Due to our results, systematic monitoring of alien pond sliders in the whole of Sicily is crucial for better planning of mitigation strategies in order to protect the native biota of Sicilian inland waters.

Spiritual elements, such as tonalli, nawalli, and yolotl form part of a complex of correlated and often overlapping concepts. Such semantic intricacy related to the notion of a spiritual element is not just a local peculiarity of Sierra Zongolica. It appears in ethnographic data concerning other Nahuatl speaking areas, as well as in early colonial sources. Th erefore, the case of Nahua beliefs constitutes a challenge to monosemantic, unambiguous defi nitions of Mesoamerican indigenous concepts of human spiritual elements, as presented by many anthropologists and ethnohistorians.

For many years the media have presented the rainforest as a fascinating and exotic place, abundant in various species of plants and animals, the home of people decorated with feathers or holding spears. Picturebooks are no exception. This article presents the ways a popular image of the Amazon forest is produced in picturebooks for young readers in English-speaking industrialised societies. The analysis shows that shaping knowledge about the tropical forest is based on stereotypes about the “untouched pristine forest” populated by “wild indigenous people” – a notion that is spurious. Some of these books undertake the subject of indigenous knowledge or the loss of cultural identity. However the presentation of these issues often lacks deeper dimensions. The exoticisation of rainforest inhabitants as well as the forest itself may have a negative impact on young readers’ understanding of the cultural diversity of the Amazon, as well as their understanding of the complexity of indigenous peoples’ lives.

Opis:
This research looks at the indigenous, aspect of the Kurds and how indigenousness is expressed within the Kurdish political movement that has been paid limited attention. As this research addresses the differences between these two notions, it will be making a significant contribution on the indigenousness of Kurds that have been either widely seen as ethnic minority in the Middle East or their existence have been denied. I aim to draw scholarly attention to indigeneity discourse to address, in particular, the self-determination claim that is considered the most debated claim of indigenous peoples as self-determination, which is in the Kurdish context, one of the key demand of the Kurdish struggle is also defined as ‘democratic autonomy/democratic confederalism’ that was recognised by the United Nations in 2007 as one of the key rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Opis:
The work concerns the restitution of museum remains as a special cultural asset found in archaeological museums. The research problem concerns reverence towards human remains constituting museum exhibits on the example of Singapore museums. This type of museum inventory has become the subject of intensified restitution activities on the part of tribal minorities, indigenous peoples, who claim the right to them based on the right to worship after their deceased ancestors, the right to protect cultural, religious, and traditional heritage. Such law is based particularly on the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The research objective focuses, first of all, on the legal grounds resulting from the Declaration, and secondly, on the analysis of the inventory of selected Singaporean museums, which contain exhibits that are human remains in their collections. The main research hypothesis focuses on the statement that Singapore, as one of the few Asian countries, maintains a special regime of pietism towards the deceased, which is manifested in the way of treating and storing human remains as museum exhibits. It may be due to the country’s cultural conditions on the one hand, and religious and legal conditions on the other. That, in turn, translates into the approach of museums to restitution claims, which are increasingly being put forward by representatives of indigenous peoples in connection with the return of the remains of their deceased ancestors. These claims find their legal basis in acts of international law and collective human rights. Therefore, the work answers the questions whether museums in Singapore duly respect international law in protecting human remains and the rights of indigenous peoples, and how this translates into reverence for this type of exhibits in museum practices in connection with ICOM regulations.

Opis:
The Americas offer a peculiar stage for translocal methodologies. If we agree that the products of Chinese American culture—which, in the course of the last 170 years of interaction, has evolved into a unique, American, phenomenon—can not be labeled as “Made in China,” then contemporary Chinese medicine in the Americas cannot legitimately be perceived solely as an ‘import.’ Beyond doubt, phenomena such as the emergence of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the California Institute of Integral Studies testify to the fact that the once ‘exotic’ forms of therapy are now being granted a status parallel to those developed throughout the history of Western medicine. Increasingly, as translocal, they are becoming recognized as non-foreign elements of the glocal culture. Similarly, the exploration of the physical world, which, to an experienced dancer of Bharatanatyam, Odissi, or any other of the dominant forms of the classical Indian dance is an obvious function of his or her own experience of the ‘body-in-the-world,’ has, translocally, opened up an altogether new space of profound understanding of ourselves in our environment. It is not about the fashionable, politically correct, ‘openness to other cultures’; it is about the opening up to a parallel meditative experience of the “bodymind,” which neither excludes nor isolates the sphere of emotions from the reality of what-is-being-experienced. Or, to express it in terms more easily comprehensible to a Western reader, dance may prove to be a methodology (not just a method) serving the purpose of a more profound understanding of the complexity and unity of the universe, and a language to express this understanding. Making the most of available traditions might produce much greater benefits than remaining locked within just one, Western, Anglonormative, library of concepts. In the context of the ongoing debate on transnational American Studies, the article offers an insight into how the worldwide studies of the Americas and translocality intersect, and how such a perspective may contribute to the multifaceted process of the decolonization, understood both literally and intellectually.

The role of the tea commodity in the economy of Indonesia is quite strategic. Various types of microorganisms in nature have been known to increase the benefit of the root function, suppress disease, and accelerate plant growth. This study aimed to determine the potential of indigenous bacteria (Azoto II-1, Acinetobacter sp., bacteria Endo-5, bacteria Endo-65 and Endo-76) on the growth of tea plants and their potential in increasing resistance to blister blight disease. The test of microbes’ potential effect on growth and blister blight was conducted in Gambung, West Java in an experimental field using a randomized block design (RBD) with six treatments and each treatment was replicated four times. The composition of the treatments was: A) Endo-5; B) Endo-65; C) Endo-76; D) Azoto II-1; E) Acinetobacter sp.; and F) control (without microbes). Bacterial suspension was applied directly to the soil at a dose of 2 l · ha−1. The bacterial suspension was applied six times at 1 week intervals. The results of field observations indicated that the intensity of blister blight decreased in all treatments but did not significantly differ from the control. Meanwhile, the results of Acinetobacter sp. treatment in tea shoots was 17.26% higher than the control.

In many parts of northern Nigeria, indigenous knowledge about the significance of different tree species has been passed down from one generation to another without proper research and documentation. Therefore, this research work involves the preliminary ethnomedicinal and phytochemical evaluation of selected tree species among some local folks of northern Nigeria. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and oral interviews. Descriptive analysis was used to carry out the data analysis for all the tree species, while laboratory analysis was used to carry out the phytochemical screening of selected tree species in the study area. The result from the study shows that about twenty three (23) tree species belonging to diverse families were discovered. The phytochemical screening shows that only Piliostigma thonnigii obtained a positive result for all the parameters checked. This work also revealed the ethnomedicinal study of tree species in the study area.

A total of 19 interviews with beginner, intermediate and advanced level learners were conducted. Results demonstrated how Māori heritage learners were motivated to learn due to their cultural heritage connection to the language and to other ingroup members. This study explores some of the motivations why Māori heritage language learners learn te reo Māori. For this group of indigenous language learners, cultural and language revitalisation are tied to language motivation. Furthermore, the ability to participate in cultural practices was central to language motivations.

The article examines the “foundings-beyond-origins” framework as proposed by Angélica Bernal in her 2017 book, Beyond Origins: Rethinking Founding in a Time of Constitutional Democracy. While accepting Bernal’s arguments about the prevailing vision of founding a political order, she posits that the realities of power deauthorise political origins. This form of politics proposes a model of engagement between Indigenous Peoples (IPs), nations, tribes and communities and hegemonic political orders based on self-determination, autonomy, self-government and consent. These concepts are the cornerstones of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). At the heart of this politcs is the “axiom of indigeneity”, a proposition that bases political origins on populations, customs, territoriality and time. The fact that societies that existed prior to the founding of contemporary political orders have survived the realities of power gives meaning to the idea of indigeneity.

Wskazuje i podkreśla wiele istotnych aspektów omawianego sporu. Doprowadziło to do sytuacji, w której każdy zbiór szczątków od nowa uruchamia te same konflikty i prowokuje do wymiany wciąż tych samych argumentów.
Since the turn of the century, the Sami demands for the return of looted cultural goods stored in Sweden's museums and research facilities have become louder and louder. An important part of them are the remains of the Sami collected for decades by archaeologists and physical anthropologists. The article presents the conflict that has occurred between scientists and representatives of the indigenous community, focusing on its background, course and arguments. The paper indicates and highlights a number of elements that are particularly important in this dispute. First, that the collections were created in violation of the rights and opinions of the indigenous community, as a result of the destruction of burial sites and of the actions of scientists without taking into account the will of the Sami. Secondly, a significant part of the remains were collected by physical anthropologists and used to create racial theories, including pointing to the subordinate Sami as belonging to the yellow race. Third, that the demands of indigenous communities were stimulated by the process of their emancipation and understood as part of it. Fourthly, that the conflicts were affected by the lack of legal regulation of the procedures and places of storing the remains as well as the mechanisms for their return and reburial. This led to a situation in which each collection triggers the same conflicts and provokes the same arguments to be formulated.

Navajo claims pertaining to the sacredness of the San Francisco Peaks (as well as those of several other Native American tribes), while no doubt profoundly sincere, are necessarily and strategically positioned in relation to the contemporary legal struggles within which they have arisen. However, I cannot stress too heavily that this should not suggest that their claims are spurious, invented, or in other words “inauthentic.” Greg Johnson asserts that “frequently, the specter against which authenticity is measured is what critics might call “postured tradition,” a shorthand means of suggesting that tradition expressed in political contexts is ‘merely political’” (2007: 3). To be sure, the discourses that posit the sacredness of the Peaks are fundamentally and simultaneously both religious and political; yet this does not necessarily mean that traditional religious claims made in contemporary political contexts are motivated by purely political considerations. Although these claims are necessarily formulated to persuade others of the incontestable “authenticity” of their claims, I suggest that the degree to which this incontestability is achieved is directly related to an accumulation and accretion of discourse resulting from nearly four decades of continuing conflict at the Peaks.

The Urak Lawoi are indigenous fishermen on Thailand’s west coast. The population includes an estimated 400 divers who dive using surface-supplied compressed air. In a cross-sectional survey conducted among the 6 major communities of Urak Lawoi, questionnaire-based interviews were administered to active divers, ex-divers, and families or colleagues of divers who had died in the previous 5 years. Six deaths resulting from diving-related accidents were identified, indicating a diving-related mortality rate of approximately 300 per 100,000 person-years, while in the same 5-year period 11 divers had been disabled owing to diving-related events, indicating a diving-related disabling event rate of approximately 550 per 100,000 person-years. Among 342 active divers interviewed, one third reported having suffered from decompression illness, although based on reported current symptoms over 50% were classified as suffering from recurring non-disabling decompression illness. Physical examination conducted on a subset of 98 active divers revealed the presence of spinal injury (clonus, raised muscle tone, and heightened reflexes) and of joint damage (pain in one or more joint, crepitus, or restricted movement) in 24 and 30% respectively. Improved primary prevention and medical treatment are needed to reduce mortality and morbidity among this population.

Opis:
Diving practices of a group of indigenous people living on Thailand’s west coast were investigated. Village chiefs were first interviewed using a questionnaire. Three hundred and forty-two active divers were then interviewed by health care workers using a second questionnaire. Field observation was used to further develop information and confirm diving practices. Divers in 6 villages, whose basic means of making a living is from diving for marine products such as fish and shellfish, have diving patterns that put them at substantial risk of decompression illness. Breathing air from a primitive compressor through approximately 100 m of air hose, these divers have long bottom times coupled with short surface intervals. Forty-six point two percent of the divers indicated that they would not make a stop during ascent from a long deep dive (40 m for 30 min). When comparing their previous day of diving to the U.S. Navy Standard Air Decompression Table (U.S. Navy, 1993), 72.1% exceeded the no-decompression limits set by the tables. Diving patterns point to a need for more in-depth research into the diving patterns of this indigenous group. Future research should include the use of dive logging devices to record depths and times. There is also a need to provide divers with information and training to reinforce positive practices and strengthen knowledge of the risks associated with their current diving practices.

Opis:
In the history of the struggle of the North American Indigenous people for the respect of their rights, the Catholic Church has always been portrayed as the one who most contributed to the violation of the fundamental rights of them, including the right to dignity and self-determination. The attitude of the governments of colonial states or the newly founded Canadian state or the United States or other Christian denominations, which supported the policy of assimilation, displacement and marginalization of the ethnic population, is almost completely ignored. In the widely held discussions in Canada and the United States, the voice of the Catholic Church which defended the indigenous people of the American continent is completely forgotten. The words of subsequent popes who demanded respect for the rights of the indigenous people, and they cut off from the policy of dehumanization are ignored, or even negated. Therefore, it is worth recalling that from the very beginning the Catholic Church, through its superior as the Pope, protested against the violation of the rights of indigenous people of North America and firmly cut off from any actions of state power aimed at assimilation of this population. In fact, it is thanks to the work of missionaries who, with the support of the Holy See, have preserved the culture, language or tradition of the Indigenous people in North America. This article reminds the forgotten voice of the popes in defense of the rights of the North American Ethnic People.

Short tandem repeat (STR) loci, i.e. microsatellites are a class of genetic markers commonly used for population studies and parentage control. This study determined the usefulness of microsatellite markers recommended by International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) for identification and pedigree analysis in horses based on the example of Polish Hucul horse population (Equus caballus). The set of seventeen microsatellites loci was tested (AHT4, AHT5, ASB2, HMS2, HMS3, HMS6, HMS7, HTG10, HTG4, HTG6, HTG7, VHL20, ASB17, ASB23, CA425, HMS1, LEX3) for 216 individuals. All samples were genotyped and mean number of alleles per locus was estimated (7.00). Means of observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity were calculated 0.7288 and 0.7027, respectively. The observed heterozygosity was similar to the results of research on Hucul horse population in another area of Carpathians Mountains. The average polymorphism information content (PIC) for analyses of seventeen microsatellite markers indicates the usefulness of this set of markers for Hucul horse parentage testing.

This paper concentrates on a particular example of cooperation between European cities and indigenous peoples of the Amazon river basin, namely that of Climate Alliance. The New Urban Agenda adopted at the UN Habitat III conference in October 2016 emphasizes that cities and other human settlements should meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities for current and future sustainable and economic inclusive development. Cities should also take measures to address climate change and protect and manage their ecosystems, water resources, the environment and biodiversity. Indigenous peoples, just like cities play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. 80 % of the territories with high biodiversity level are indigenous lands. Their indigenous ecological knowledge may serve as a valuable tool in initiatives aimed at fighting climate change. The aim of the paper is to show whether there are any benefits of such cooperation and what is its significance in the fight against climate change. The main research question is: what are the forms of cooperation between European cities and Amazonian indigenous peoples in the framework of Climate Alliance? In which way can European cities support indigenous peoples in their fight for their rights and consequently for the nature’s preservation? The hypothesis is that European cities may learn from indigenous peoples of the Amazon how to combat climate change.

This article focuses on indigenous ecofeminism and literature of matrilineage in Linda Hogan’s Solar Storms (1995), a novel of environmental protest and indigenous “survivance,” a portmanteau word from “survival” and “resistance.” It analyzes the ability of inter-female bonding in mending the protagonist’s broken connections with her communal and natural environment. It depicts a gynocratic community in which women enjoy a pivotal position as leaders, storytellers, and secret keepers of healing traditions. In this novel, indigenous feminism intersects with ecofeminism, highlighting woman–nature symbolic connections as well as woman’s role in ecological conservation.

Contemporary Slavery and the Struggle for Self-Determination: The Case of the Guaraní People from the Bolivian ChacoFor over a century, the Bolivian Guaraní people have been subjected to infrahuman treatment which involved practices such as slavery, forced labor and servitude. The new agrarian legislation, aimed at reversing the concentration of the economic and social power in the hands of a small regional elite, represented a shift in a state policy, facilitating the access of indigenous peoples to collective land property and thereby enabling them to break away from the conditions of debt bondage and forced labor. The article examines the current situation of the Guaraní and focuses on the changes and challenges that have been introduced to their way of life due to the implementation of the clearing title process which brought about a partial reconstitution of their territory. It presents the recent data on their struggle to redefine and reconstruct their cultural identity and places emphasis on specific cultural elements considered valuable by the Guaraní society: territorial management, native language, customary law and wider inclusion of women in decision-making structures within the indigenous political organization. As the importance of preserving indigenous languages has been highlighted in different fora and numerous contexts, the Arctic appears to be no exception in this regard. The vitality and sustainability of Arctic indigenous languages pervade the discourse on the polar region and lie at the core of the Arctic Indigenous Language Vitality Initiative. To explore the complexity of the endeavor, this conceptual paper analyzes the framing of Arctic indigenous language preservation in selected academic publications as well as institutional documents. Since the use of biomorphic metaphors in the context of language preservation raises numerous doubts regarding their socio-political implications, this paper attempts to address this issue from the perspective of ecolinguistics perceived as both analytical and conceptual lenses to demonstrate that its three complementary strands of research may help bridge the nature-culture divide in general and provide an integrated approach to the preservation of Arctic indigenous languages in particular.

Opis:
Global changes in policies regarding Indigenous people, observed in the last decades, have had a strong impact on language policies in the Americas. They are aimed at increasing protection of Indigenous languages, especially in countries with a higher number and percentage of Native people and Indigenous language speakers (ILS). However, it is argued in the paper that the scope of these policies is often not adapted to changes in spatial distribution of Autochthonous populations, while their effective implementation in many cases seems outright impossible. The first part of the paper sums up an analysis concerning the number and spatial distribution of Indigenous people and ILS in countries and dependent territories of the Americas. The second part shows the evolution of policies towards Indigenous languages in the Americas from the colonial era to our times. The last part studies spatial aspects of the situation of Indigenous languages in Mexico City, based primarily on qualitative data obtained from interviews and observations carried out during field research. The paper concludes: that a clear progress has been made in language policies in the last decades in the analysed region, especially in Latin America; that there is no obvious difference in the implementation of these policies between unitary and federal states; and that, based on the case of Mexico City, the implementation of a relevant language policy may be seriously hindered by such factors as insufficient financing, political disputes, and a deeply embedded discrimination against Indigenous languages.

Opis:
The article aims to analyze the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation’s fight for recognition as a tribe and the recent attempts by the US federal government to take their land out of trust. Mashpee’s 1977-1978 lost court case was famously described by James Clifford in a chapter of his book, The Predicament of Culture (1988). The article looks at the continuation of their legal struggle, their recognition as a tribe under the Code of Federal Regulations in 2007 and their recent legal battle to keep their lands. Mashpee’s case is illustrative of the changes in the general perspective of tribal nations’ identities and histories which have taken place in the United States since the 1970s, as reflected in the legal documents analyzed. It also shows that the change in perspective and law itself does not necessarily guarantee sovereignty. Thus, the article takes a legal anthropological approach to the subject.
Sprawa sądowa Mashpee z lat 1977-1978, którą przegrali, została opisana przez Jamesa Clifforda w jednym z rozdziałów jego znanej książki The Predicament of Culture (1988; wyd. polskie Kłopoty z kulturą 2000). Przypadek plemienia Mashpee obrazuje zmianę w postrzeganiu tożsamości i historii narodów plemiennych, jaka zaszła w USA od końca lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku. Znajduje ona swoje odzwierciedlenie w analizowanych dokumentach prawnych. Zatem przedsięwzięcie to podchodzi do zagadnienia podmiotowości i statusu prawnego tych grup z perspektywy antropologii prawa.

This article is aimed at establishing the place of exoticisms against the spectrum of other loan words. We consider increased language and cultural contacts, intensified in recent years. Additionally, we focus on the typology of loan words, taking into account their degree of assimilation to the rules of the recipient language. We define exoticisms as unassimilated loan words, whose main aim is to re-create various national features and name unknown cultural phenomena. The domination of cultural traits in the semantic structure of exoticisms (which constitutes the hallmark of this lexical group) is the basis of the proposed relation between the analyzed loan words and the so-called words-realities. Moreover, we put stress on the particular spheres of life in which exoticisms are used, as well as on their inner differentiation, connected with the nativization processes affecting the language.

An analysis of Australia’s governmental policy towards indigenous peoples has been done. The negative consequences of the colonization of the Australian continent have been revealed, in particular, a significant reduction in the number of aborigines due to the spread of alcohol and epidemics, the seizure of their territories. It is concluded that the colonization of Australia was based on the idea of the hierarchy of human society, the superiority and inferiority of different races and groups of people, and accordingly - the supremacy of European culture and civilization. It is demonstrated in the creation of reservations for aborigines and the adoption of legislation aimed at segregating the country's white and colored populations and assimilating certain indigenous peoples into European society, primarily children from mixed marriages. It has been proven that, considering the aborigines an endangered people and seeking to protect them from themselves, Europeans saw the way to their salvation in miscegenation - interracial marriages and the isolation of aboriginal children from their parents. This policy has been pursued since the end of the XIX century by the 1970s and had disrupted cultural and family ties and destroyed aboriginal communities, although government circles positioned it as a policy of caring for indigenous Australians. As a result, the generation of aborigines taken from their parents and raised in boarding schools or families of white Europeans has been dubbed the “lost generation”. The activity of A.O. Neville who for more than two decades held the position of chief defender of the aborigines in Western Australia and in fact became the ideologist of the aborigines’ assimilation policy has been analyzed. He substantiated the idea of the biological absorption of the indigenous Australian race as a key condition for its preservation and extremely harshly implemented the policy of separating Aboriginal children from their parents. It is concluded that the policy towards the indigenous population of Australia in the late XIX – first third of the XX century was based on the principle of discrimination on racial grounds.

“Kill the Indian in the Child.” On cultural genocide and transitional justice in Canada. Kate Korycki in an interview by Anna ZawadzkaThis is an interview with Kate Korycki on the reparations for the native population in Canada for what the Canadian government defined as “cultural genocide.” Kate Korycki was born in Warsaw and has lived in Toronto for 25 years. Until 2006 she worked for the Canadian Government in a ministry delivering federal social programs, like unemployment insurance and pensions. Her last job involved the implementation of the Common Experience Payment. This was the largest government program to offer reparations for the wrongs suffered by the indigenous population in Canada in residential schools, which were run for 150 years by the Catholic and Unitarian Churches. The schools have recently been characterized as sites of cultural genocide.Kate Korycki is completing her doctorate in political science at the University of Toronto. She holds an MA in Political Science from McGill University. Her broad research agenda concerns the politics of identity, belonging, and conflict. In her doctoral work she is concentrating on the politics of identity in time of transition.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to draw critical attention to the use of photovoice as an anti-oppressive method in research with Aboriginal peoples. In response to the historical vulnerability of Aboriginal peoples to research that “wants to know and define the Other,” anti-oppressive methods deconstruct taken-for-granted research models and focus on privileging Indigenous voices, political integrity, and justice strategies. Anti-oppressive approaches are connected to emancipation and cannot be divorced from the history of racism. Theoretically, photovoice aligns well with anti-oppressive goals, using photographs and storytelling as a catalyst for identifying community issues towards informed solutions. Having roots in Freireian-based processes, photovoice has the goal of engaging citizens in critical dialogues and moving people to social action. Drawing on our recently completed photovoice study, Visualizing Breast Cancer: Exploring Aboriginal Women’s Experiences (VBC), we demonstrate that photovoice seems successful in enhancing critical consciousness among participants, but that outcomes may not be disruptive. While photovoice has the potential to develop counter-hegemonic anti-oppressive knowledge, this may be lost depending on how the research process is encountered; thus, we propose the implementation of a revisionary model which incorporates a culturally safe anti-oppressive lens.

The article is an attempt to non-anthropological read the fragment of Pan Tadeusz about an animal cementery. In the light of indigenous knowledge, Mickiewicz’s “matecznik” seems to be a relic of the animistic imagination, in which human and non-human persons have similar ontological status. Basing on the folk tradition rooted in the direct experience, the poet also anticipates quite modern natural science diagnoses – about the “spiritual life of animals” and their convergent with human mortual customs.

The paper looks at the role of traditional foodways and related cultural practices in Oneida’s contemporary food sovereignty efforts, and the various understandings of the continuity of food and agricultural traditions in the community. The tribe’s Tsyunhehkw^’s (joon-hen-kwa) farm, whose name loosely translates into “life sustenance” in English, serves important cultural, economic and educational purposes. It grows Oneida white flint corn, which is considered sacred by the tribe and is used for ceremonial purposes, it grows the tobacco used for ceremonies and runs a traditional Three Sisters Garden. The Three Sisters – corn, beans and squash, are an important part of the Oneida creation story, as well as the vision of Handsome Lake – a Seneca prophet from the turn of the 19th century, who played an significant role in the revival of traditional religion among the People of the Longhouse.[1] They inform the work done at Tsyunhehkw^ to provide healthful food for the Oneida community. [1]The Oneida form part of the Iroquois Confederacy (as called by the French), referred to as the League of Five Nations by the English, or the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, as they call themselves. Haudenosaunee translates into the People of the Longhouse. The Confederacy, which was founded by the prophet known as Peacemaker with the help of Hiawatha, is made up of the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas. It was intended as a way to unite the nations and create a peaceful means of decision making. The exact date of the joining of the nations is unknown and it is one of the first and longest lasting participatory democracies in the world (“About the Haudenosaunee Confederacy” 2019).

The paper concentrates on the right to self-determination of indigenous peoples on the basis of the Nisga’a Nation. The author analyzes the most important provisions of the Nisga’a Final Agreement, in particular those envisaging self-determination of the Nisga’a Nation. Then the author briefly examines the Nisga’a Constitution which may be regarded as a means to implement the Nisga’a Final Agreement. It shows how the Nisga’a selfgovernance model fits into the provisions on self-determination of indigenous peoples. The thesis of this paper is that the Nisga’a self-governance is consonant with international legal standards expressed in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Nisga’a selfgovernment model is much more than just cultural autonomy: it actually amounts to political autonomy. This subject is worth exploring because it may serve as a pattern to be followed with reference to other indigenous peoples, not only in Canada.

In our study, an inventory was carried out of plants used in managing sexual diseases by Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni tribal people in Rivers State, Nigeria. Ten (10) communities (Kreigani, Odugili, Oboh, Agah, Obakata, Obirikom, Ndoni, Agwe, Egbema and Omoku) were randomly selected within the ethnic clan for the study. Structured pre-tested questionnaires were then administered among Traditional Medicine Practitioners (TMPs), Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), herb vendors and knowledgeable individuals. In all, 111 randomly selected informants were interviewed. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics and utilization tables. Accordingly, males constituted 50.5% and females 49.5% of the studied population, and a majority of the respondent were subsistent farmers (50.5%), petty traders (22.5%), TBAs (10.8%), TMPs (9.9%) and herb vendors (0.9%). Prevalent health conditions were categorized into twelve areas (miscarriage, menstrual disorder, hernia and weak erection, among others). As a result of the work, taxonomic diversity showed 119 medicinal plants species, belonging to 47 families and 71 genera. Most cited plant families were Malvaceae (7 species) and Fabaceae (6 species). The plant parts that were mostly used were the leaves (52.28 %), roots (37.54 %) and barks (3.86%). This study shows that rural inhabitants still rely on traditional medicine for health care needs, and that many of the medicinal plants should undergo research for future drug development and conservation.

Focusing on Stradbroke Dreamtime (1972), the first prose book of an Australian Indigenous poet, activist and educationalist, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (also known as Kath Walker), I reflect on questions which arise around cross-cultural communication and translation. Prompted by the unfinished project aimed at translating Stradbroke Dreamtime into Polish, I deliberate on challenges to respond appropriately to Australian Indigenous writing, particularly if it is influenced by white editing and publishing practices which often privilege Eurocentric views. Situating Stradbroke Dreamtime in the broader context of Noonuccal’s life, political activism and pedagogical efforts, I read her work as an intergenerational, inclusive and transformative project, and an act of solidarity between generations and cultures. In the context of Indigenous Australia, the concept of solidarity is often associated with reconciliation. I explore this nexus, arguing that Stradbroke Dreamtime reflects Walker’s strategy for reconciliation which includes empowering children through storytelling.

The article analyzes how the international and national legal acts, directly or indirectly, define the term “Indian”. It turns out that defining a parent category which is native, operating in the international legal and political space, is a problematic issue which has not yet been settled. The mentioned in the article countries deal with this issue in different ways, referring to it in their constitutions, legal acts of less importance, as well as creating criteria for conducting population censuses. The relationship between the criteria and the results of these censuses clearly shows that the language used in the social space is a self-fulfilling prophecy shaping the reality.

What is the meaning of the word ‘indigenous’? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it means: ‘originating or occurring naturally in a particular place.’ Paradoxically, what was first taken away from the people we define by this umbrella term is a place of their own. It is important to realize that not only their birthright to housing and organizing their living space has been violated. The lack of place is also a contradiction of the word ‘indigenous’, and thereby a direct cause of most problems connected with the contemporary situation of indigenous peoples around the globe. That is why, this paper presents research on the topic of homelessness among indigenous peoples. For the purpose of discussing the problem in more detail, the focus is on two particular native groups: Indigenous peoples of America (First Nations, the Inuit, the Métis) and Aboriginal Australians. For the sake of clarity, First Nations, the Inuit, the Métis are referred to as ‘Indigenous’, and native Australians as ‘Aboriginal’, although these two words are in fact synonymous. The aim of this bipartite study is also to compare the situation of native groups and laws that govern public space from two entirely different parts of the world, and to check whether there are more similarities or differences regarding the issue of homelessness.

This article discusses the political representation of indigenous women considering its symbolic dimension. It assumes that analyses about the descriptive and substantive representation of groups underrepresented in the State (such as indigenous people and women) are important but insufficient to understand the way in which the politicization and participation of indigenous women in the public space develops. Hence, what is analyzed is how symbolic representation is shaped and the uses it acquires among indigenous peoples (as assertion or excuse) and within the State (as folklorization). This analysis is based on secondary (documentary) information for the Latin American region and primary information: life stories and in-depth interviews, carried out between the years 2001 and 2017, with social and political figures of different indigenous peoples from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Panama.

The two dipterocarp species, Dipterocarpus alatus and Hopea odorata, have been widely planted in degraded forest land in Southern Vietnam in the last decades. However, study on growth characteristics of these species and their associated factors is still limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine growth performance in different stand densities, and classify tree quality in 28-year old D. alatus and H. odorata plantations. Our results of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that in pure stand aged 28 years, D. alatus outperformed H. odorata in tree growth, biomass and volume. In addition, except for four growth variables including tree height at the first branch (Hb), crown length (CL), crown ratio (CR) and linear crown index (LCI), the remaining variables were negatively affected by stand density. We observed that medium quality trees occupied the greatest proportion in both D. alatus (47%; n = 425) and H. od- orata (50%; n = 400). Except for CR and LCI, the class of good quality trees had the greatest values in the remaining examined growth variables. In linear discriminant analysis (LDA) model, the classification accuracy of testing set was relatively high in both D. alatus (85%) and H. odorata (91%). The most impor- tant variables for tree quality classification in D. alatus were crown diameter (CD) and diameter at breast height (DBH). Meanwhile, the most important variables in H. odorata were CD and tree height (H). These obtained results suggest that controlling crown size is important for shaping individual tree quality. Our data evidenced that D. alatus and H. odorata planted in Southern Vietnam with density equal or less than 500 trees per ha could yield high proportion of good and medium quality trees.

Glyphosate is an active substance in the Roundup herbicide. The key process affecting its decomposition in the soil is microbial biodegradation. Bacteria that are able to break the C-P bond use this substance as a source of phosphorus. The aim of the study was to investigate the ability of thirty strains of soil bacteria to grow in the presence of glyphosate which was the sole source of phosphorus. Morphologically and physiologically varied soil bacteria strains were the subject of the study. Their ability to grow in the presence of glyphosate being the only phosphorus source was examined using a modified Dworkin-Foster growth medium. The modification itself consisted in introducing to the medium 0.5 mM • dm–3 of glyphosate which was to serve as an alternative source of phosphorus. The control sample in the study was the bacterial growth in two Dworkin-Foster growth media: a complete one (unmodified) and a phosphorus-free one. The growth intensity of the analyzed strains was assessed by means of spectrophotometry (λ = 490 nm). Substantial differences in the growth intensity of the analyzed bacterial strains were observed in the presence of glyphosate, which was the sole source of phosphorus. Only eight out of the analyzed strains showed growth similar to what was observed in the case of the unmodified Dworkin-Foster medium, whereas all the remaining ones grew at a much slower rate.
Bakterie zdolne do rozkładu wiązania C-P wykorzystują go jako źródło fosforu. Materiał badawczy stanowiły zróżnicowane morfologicznie i fizjologicznie szczepy bakterii glebowych.

Aluminium recycling is one of currently growing industries in Indonesia. Abundant amounts of aluminium waste leads to the emergence of new industries. The waste produced from this kind of industry is not well processed yet. Bioremediation using isolated indigenous bacteria is one of the best options from treating the aluminium recycling wastewater. Since biological processes are closely related to the bacterial growth conditions, it is important to understand the effect of pH and aluminium exposure to bacteria. Six potential bacteria strains were obtained from isolation. Vibrio alginolyticus and Brochothrix thermosphacta were shown to be resistant to the aluminium exposure, as well as the acidic conditions. Both types of bacteria were able to survive on acid medium with pH 5. The higher the concentration of aluminium, the slower bacterial growth rate achieved. The MIC value of aluminium for Vibrio alginolyticus was 425 mg/l, Brochothrix thermosphacta was 325 mg/l and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 200 mg/l.

This paper sets out a new reconstruction of indigenous rights as a field of sociological research. Questioning the dominant pluralist paradigm in such inquiry, it claims that indigenous rights are primarily the results, not of socially embedded customs, but of interactions between international law and national law. It then proceeds to explain that, to capture such rights, a focus on social integration and national citizenship is required. It uses this framework to explain indigenous rights as elements of a global legal order that facilitates the construction of citizenship, especially in societies in which citizenship has been subject to deep strain.

Opis:
The article is a deep reflection on changes taking place in minority cultures, not only in contact with their larger neighbours, but also, and above all, under the influence of globalisation processes and the rapid development of tourism. The research is structured in order to present the Batwa people living in the African Great Lakes region from a broader time perspective. The juxtaposition of two research periods, one from the early 20th century (Jan Czekanowski) and the other from the 21st century (Lucjan Buchalik), made it possible to track the changes in the everyday life of this community. On the one hand, the Batwa are marginalised, and on the other hand, they are being absorbed by the surrounding, more dominant peoples. Studying the transformation process, one can notice that the Batwa accepted many changes resulting from their contacts with the outside world. It was the process of forcible displacement from their historical territories that threatened the existence of this community.

The article deals with an inconsistency between the indigenous vision of the world and copyright. The author refers to the category of the political as the proper one to reflect this friction. The work embraces influential intuition of Carl Schmitt on the relationship between politicality and conflict. The author assumes that what can be treated as an expression of political vision (i.e. as something which is not neutral) is political. This approach does not require direct link with the traditionally understood sphere of politics to discern the realm of political.

This article discusses the phenomenon of reusing of ancient rock art iconography in modern art on the example of the artworks of Canadian Cree visual artist Jane Ash Poitras. To understand the role the rock art plays in the collages of J.A. Poitras, the first part of the paper is focused on the Indigenous perspective, which provides the clue to reading complexity of history and contemporary art of the First Nations in Canada. Then the painting Shaman never die V is thoroughly analyzed. It is showed that rock art motifs used in this artwork had been very carefully selected and the meanings they evoke significantly go in pair with wider ideas related to traumatic history of Indigenous Canadians as well as ideas related to persistence of Indigenous spirituality symbolized by the image of shaman.

In this article I intend to draw upon Colombian collaborative ethnography as a paradigm that could have an impact on our understanding of what collaboration means, shifting our emphasis from the production of ethnography as a central goal to that of engaging in activist research that is equally productive in a broader sense for both the professional ethnographer and the community. The research from which this article is drawn was conducted with southern Colombian indigenous organizations between 1996 and 2002, with the support of the Graduate School of Georgetown University, the Instituto Colombiano de Antropología, and an international collaborative grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research.

We propose a distinction between two onto-metaphysical orientations: one that reduces being to discursive practices, which we call ‘wording the world’; and another that manifests being as co-constitutive of a worlded world, where language is one amongst other inter-woven entities, which we call ‘worlding the world’. Speaking from Indigenous and racialized loci of enunciation, in this article we do not aim to dialectically propose an antithesis to the theses of modernity-coloniality or decoloniality, but to highlight the co-constitution of things in the world by making an ontology that is currently invisible, noticeably absent. We start with a brief outline of a common and arguably unavoidable pattern in scholarship in decolonial studies that tends to conflate knowing and being, inadvertently reproducing the modern-colonial grammar of wording the world that it, dialectically, aims to delink from. We then present a Maori philosophy of language that grounds a completely different relationships between language, knowledge and being to those that can be imagined and experienced within the grammar of modernity. In the final section we explore the implications of this philosophy for the call of decolonizing discourse studies, offering some (im)practical suggestions, given the current context of intelligibility and affective investments in academic settings.

The aim of the paper is to present the evolution of papal social teaching on indigenous peoples’ rights from a historical perspective. It seems possible to distinguish various phases of the Catholic standpoint based on the factual, historical background: medieval challenges of infidel peoples, the Indian question during the colonization period, the impact of modernity: class struggle and the Catholic social teaching, and finally, the contemporary globalization era during the present pontificate of Pope Francis. The common threads of papal teaching concern, firstly, the evangelizing mission of the Church to bring faith to overseas peoples and, secondly, human rights of indigenous peoples. The human rights perspective is inextricably linked with the principle of self-determination, understood as the foundation of good governance.

Transitional justice is resorted to within the framework of transition from armed conflict to peace and from authoritarian regimes to the democratic ones. To reach the aims of transitional justice and to better integrate the needs and perspectives of the indigenous peoples that very often are victims of serious human rights violations in the transitional context, as well as the colonisation context, indigenous instruments of justice may be utilised. As such they may be treated as complementary to other transitional justice mechanisms. The article aims to find a new perspective on the complementary role of the indigenous justice and the State justice systems within the framework of transitional justice as well as to take into account the indigenous peoples’ needs and customs. The overall aim of the paper is to answer the question whether it is desirable for such indigenous justice instruments to complement the State justice systems through a better integration of the needs and customs of indigenous peoples. In the concluding remarks, a model of complementarity model of transitional justice that includes indigenous instruments will be proposed.

Euphorbia hirta (Tawa-tawa), also known as “gatas-gatas”, is a hairy herb grown in open grasslands, roadsides and pathways. This indigenous plant is considered as one of the most popular folkloric treatment for dengue in the Philippines. When researched, Tawa-tawa was found to be able to promote cell production, and to prevent platelet destruction (Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, 2013). In this study, a new application of the plant was evaluated. This was as a natural supplement for ice cream production without the degradation of its essential compounds. Fresh leaves of E. hirta were oven dried and macerated to water for 48 hours. The obtained extracts were subjected to lyophilization to prevent potential degradation of plant’s essectial compounds. Ice cream formulation was added with the obtained powdered extract of E. hirta. Results revealed that the lyophilized extracts from E. hirta leaves contained flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols and saponins. Promising amounts of Vitamin B2 (5.02 mg/kg), Beta-carotene (9.8 mg/kg), Vitamin E (23.8 mg/kg) and Vitamin C (80.2 mg/kg) were also obtained. Meanwhile, the E. hirta supplemented ice cream was negative to Salmonella and a 16 CFU/g for Total Coliform Count was found. What is more, organoleptic testing for both taste and texture revealed excellent responses and very good aroma. The findings of the current study affirmed the feasibility of developing a naturally-based ice cream product supplemented with a medicinal plant like E. hirta. The results indicate that the developed ice cream is safer and healthier, hence could encourage everyone to enjoy the delights of eating ice cream without worry of gastronomic distress.
