Opis:
The three aims of the study were to: 1) evaluate the content of selenium and polyphenols, and to assess the reductive potential (FRAP test) and ability to deactivate ABTS•+ cation radicals in C. officinalis, H. perforatum, M. x piperita and S. marianum from Poland and Ukraine; 2) define the diversification in concentrations of selenium and polyphenols and in levels of ABTS activity and FRAP reductive potential within the examined species in relation to their location; and 3) evaluate the inter-dependencies between selenium, total polyphenol concentration, ABTS and FRAP activity, in the examined plants. We observed differences in the content of total polyphenols and antioxidative activity between the herb species and the location. Most selenium was found in M. x piperita and S. marianum from western Ukraine, with Polish H. perforatum from Pomerania and M. x piperita from Podlasie representing the highest TP content and antioxidative potential. A clear and significant relationship between the content of Se and antioxidative activity (ABTS and FRAP), and also between total polyphenols and antioxidative activity was noted only in H. perforatum. In C. officinalis a significant relationship was noted between Se and both total polyphenols and antioxidative potential. In M. x piperita a significant dependency was found between total polyphenols and antioxidative potential. The results of our research indicate a different role of selenium as an antioxidant in H. perforatum and C. officinalis, as well as polyphenols in H. perforatum and M. x piperita in dependence on the harvesting regions.

Opis:
In 1894, Pier Desiderio Pasolini published notes on the beauty of women written by Catherine Sforza. Unfortunately the original text written by Catherine disappeared in unknown circumstances but in 1522 Lucantonio Cuppano had seen the original and made one copy which was later consulted and published by Pasolini who gave it the tittle Experimenti de la Excelentissima Signora Caterina da Furlji. This writing - next to the work of Metrodora and Trotula of Salerno - is one of the oldest texts written by women, which is preserved for our time. This work shows that Catherine must have received an excellent education as she was interested in medicine, alchemy and property of herbs and minerals. The lecture on her recipes shows that she prepared her cosmetics for herself but she also sent them to others. Her recipes show her knowledge of the property of many herbs and minerals. Probably she thought about publishing her notes as we can find there some easy formulas (for beginners) where it was necessary only to add and mix the products. But there are also more complicated instructions where it was necessary to know, for example the process of distillation etc. Her writings show how in the 15th century women in Italy cared about their beauty and which herbs and minerals to use to make their cosmetics.

Opis:
Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is simple and inexpensive sample preparation procedure which can be applied for the isolation/fractionation of essential oil compounds from wide variety of samples, such as foodstuffs, biological and environmental. Due to the complex nature of the examined matrices and frequently low concentration level of target components, analytical procedures require the use of initial sample preparation stage. The paper shows the possibility of essential oil components fractionation from different plant materials using SPE method. The results presented in this paper shows that the proposed SPE procedure allows for easy and total fractionation of essential oil constituents (especially low-molecular oxygen compounds) from the sample matrix.

Herbs are characterised by different contents of biologically active substances, hence they are widely used in various branches of industry. Herb cultivation in East-Central Europe focuses on small-sized areas requiring machines and equipment adapted to the scale of production. The processing of herb plants involves drying, which is one of the most important stages of herb preservation, conditioning the right quality of the raw material. This article presents a short description of the methods for herb preservation and a classification of drying systems using solar energy and hot air. Looking for ways to assure the drying of the crops in unfavourable atmospheric conditions, variants of solar collectors with the biomass-powered furnace for heating drying air in driers of herbs have been invented. The solutions developed by authors of this paper to provide small-scale low-cost technological devices for the drying of herbs and specialty crops are also presented. The installations presented use hot air from solar radiation and heat generated from the combustion of biomass in the form of wood chips. These installations and equipment do not require an electricity supply. The elimination of natural drying through the use of drying chambers eliminates the unfavourable effect of ultraviolet radiation on the loss of essential oils. The drying installations and devices presented in this article are under patenting procedure.

Opis:
Considerable variability of meadow sites cause that they are covered by many plant communities characterised by substantial biodiversity. Their swards, apart from grasses and legumes, contain dicotyledonous plants which belong to different botanical families. Some of these species which improve fodder palatability and, in addition, exhibit medicinal properties are called herbs. The aim of the performed investigations was to assess possibilities of harvesting herbs from swards of meadow communities depending on site conditions and utilisation. On the basis of the analysis of phytosociological surveys obtained with the assistance of the Braun-Blanquet method from meadows and pastures, the authors identified meadow communities, determined their floristic diversity, floristic structure and utilisation groups. Site conditions were assessed using the phytoindication method with the assistance of Ellenberg's indicator numbers and utilisation intensity was determined on the basis of information obtained from farmers. The obtained results indicate that: despite considerable sward floristic diversity of the examined grasslands, only 5-24,5% plant species classified as "herbs" were identified, the highest numbers of herbs were found in moderately moist sites. Sites with elevated soil nitrogen concentrations were characterised by low proportions of "herbs". Swards of intensively utilised meadow communities (3 times cutting; rotational grazing) exhibited lower proportions of "herbs".

Opis:
The demand for native medicinal plants has gained much attention among the developing tropical regions of the world in the last decades owing to their relative affordability, acclaimed efficacy and perceived user safety. The rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases, potential treatments and possible cures has led not only to increased patronage, but also to their combination with conventional medicine for better health care delivery and speedy recovery. In this present study, factors influencing these developments were examined. Hence, interview and semi-structured questionnaires were randomly administered among 104 respondents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Civil servants, self employed (Herb sellers, traditional medicine practitioners and farmers), unemployed (aged people) and students. Based on the responses obtained, 85% of the respondent stated that they make use of herbs, while 12.5% disagreed and 1.9% was undecided. However, 50%, 38% and 14%, agreed, disagreed and were undecided, respectively to combining herbs and orthodox medicine. Occupation was shown to significantly influence the level of herbal usage and its combination with orthodox medicine. The study revealed the high dependence on herbs and the combined of the use of the same with orthodox medicine, with occupation playing a significant role in each case. These observations underscore the importance of traditional medicine as a subsystem of good health delivery and that a double practice exists among health care seekers.

Green fodder plays a key role in nutrition of ruminants, and its quality is determined by the species composition of meadow and pasture swards. Legumes and herbs are generally more abundant in nutrients, especially minerals, than grasses. Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are particularly important for animal health. The dietary levels of Ca and P should be balanced to increase their availability and utilization. The aim of this study was to determine the content of calcium and phosphorus and the Ca:P ratio in selected legume and herb species from extensively used grasslands in the Olsztyn Lakeland. The study covered the following species of leguminous plants: Trifolium pratense, Trifolium repens, Lotus corniculatus, Lathyrus pratensis, Lotus uliginosus and Vicia cracc, and herbaceous plants: Taraxacum officinale, Achillea millefolium, Plantago lanceolata, Alchemilla vulgaris, Heracleum sibiricum and Cirsium oleraceum. The investigated legumes and herbs differed significantly in their Ca and P content and the Ca: P ratio. All the species were abundant in Ca, and two taxa: Cirsium oleraceum and Heracleum sibiricum, were characterized by particularly high levels of calcium. The highest levels of phosphorus were noted in Heracleum sibiricum, whereas the lowest content of P was determined in Alchemilla vulgaris, Cirsium oleraceum and Trifolium pratense. Cirsium oleraceum was abundant in Ca and deficient in P, hence it was distinguished by the widest Ca:P ratio. Legumes and herbs are valuable components of meadow sward and a rich source of minerals, in particular Ca, in animal diets.

Adverse events should be anticipated when these herbal medications with identified pharmacological effects or toxic ingredients are used. Healthcare professionals need to discuss or advise patients regarding their use. Physician-obtained medication histories towards specific herbal product use could provide relevant pharmacologic information and uncover cases of adverse events or toxicity from the used herbal products.

Most indigenous people have acquired expertise in the use of medicinal plants, but information on the utilization of the medicinal plants are poorly documented. Thus, this study deals with the ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used in treating viral infections in Saki West Local Government Area, Oyo State. Data was collected using structured questionnaires and oral interviews to acquire information from selected members of Saki West Local Government Area. A total of sixty (60) structured questionnaires were given randomly to respondents in the selected villages in the study area. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The finding shows that the majority of the respondents were females (61.7%). Moreover, 50 % of the respondents were from the age group of 31 to 40 (also the largest group). In addition, a majority (88.3%) of the respondents were married, and only a few (16.7%) had no formal education. Furthermore, the major occupation of the respondents was herb selling (35.0%). The findings on the various plant parts utilized for herbal medicine indicated that the leaves, stem bark and whole root were the most commonly used parts. Most of the respondents also prepared herbal medicine by decoction. What is more, oral ingestion (drinking) was found to be the most (70.0%) preferred mode of administration in the study area. Finally, the major problem encountered while acquiring medicinal plants was wild animal threat. This work indicated that there is a need for an ethnobotanical survey in every state of the nation on the medicinal plants used in the treatment of viral infection.
