Background: ICT use encourages deviation from a physically active lifestyle and might surreptitiously become a contemporary contributor to chronic diseases. The study was conducted to examine the extent of ICT use and its implications for exercise participation and health in the Nigerian University Community. Methods: A descriptive survey research design involving permanent members of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria was used. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 767 staff and students with an age range of 15–60 years. The University of Ilorin ethical review committee granted clearance (UERC/ASN/2016/588). The respondents were informed and all signed the informed consent form. A validated questionnaire, “Information and Communication Technology Use and Sedentariness Questionnaire (ICTUSQ)” with reliability (r=.89), was used for data collection. Statistical analyses conducted were frequency, percentage and One-way ANOVA; p≤0.05. Result: The most common types of ICT activities among the Nigerian University Community were: mobile phones calls/texting 91.0% (n=698), online-chats 90.9% (n=697), computer use 69.9% (n=536) and viewing TV/DVD 64.5% (n=495). Due to ICT use, respondents were continuously sedentary for several hours daily. Only 34.8% (n=267) of them participated in the recommended amount of exercise, the majority 81.0% (n=621) reported that they were too busy to exercise. ICTinduced health problems included shoulder pain 60.9% (n=467), thumb pain 68.6% (n=526), fatigue 33.0% (n=253), phone addiction 84.3% (n=646) and anxiety/depression 76.1% (n=544). Irrespective of age, factors that largely determined the extent of ICT use were gender, n=767, F(9, 757)=407.73, p≤0.005; occupation, n=767, F(9, 757)=163.79, p≤0.002; and type of job, n=767, F (9, 757)=639.45, p≤0.003. Conclusion: Excessive ICT use leads to sedentariness and a reduction in the desire to exercise. The accumulated effect might accelerate the risk of cardiometabolic, cardiovascular, physiological and mental disorders. Regular physical activity breaks of at least 5 minutes each hour of continuous ICT use, and the introduction of physical education and sport programmes to inculcate sustainable physical activity culture in the university community is recommended.

The aim of the study was evaluation of water from geothermal source Uniejów for spontaneous fermentation of red beetroot, assuming that beetroot values in combination with highly mineralized water will lead to innovative products with excellent organoleptic properties and potentially higher pro-health activity in comparison to the products available in the market. In the result, the use of geothermal water allowed to obtain fermented beet cubes and juice characterized by high sensory quality, unique mineral aftertaste, very good flesh firmness and viscosity. A significant impact on the physicochemical characteristics and sensory quality had the original quality of cultivar, which was evaluated higher for ‘Wodan F1’ than for ‘Alto F1’. There were no significant differences in the contents of the selected compounds depending on the type of water, except for cubic texture, which was higher evaluated after fermentation in geothermal water.

Opis:
Introduction: Living in the age of modern inventions one forgets about one of the best medications for many health problems, which is physical activity. In 2016, Kantar Public (Ministry of Sport and Tourism, 2016) announced that only one in five Poles aged 15-69 had an adequate level of physical activity. A CBOS (Centre for Public Opinion Research) survey conducted in 2014 showed that half of Poles weigh too much. For the development of lifestyle diseases, besides overweight, the wrong lifestyle also contributes (CBOS No. 122/2014). According to the WOBASZ (a multi-center nationwide survey of the health status of the population) survey, only 3% of Polish society is characterized by "an indicator of a healthy lifestyle" (Kwaśniewska, Kaczmarczyk-Chałas, Dziankowska-Zaborszczyk, Kucharczyk, Drygas, 2010). The role and task of physical activity at an early age, as well as at any other stage of life, is very important in the prevention of civilization diseases, which is why it is crucial to monitor it. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the level of physical activity, state of health and the lifestyle of the academic youth. Material and methods: The research was carried out among students from three universities in Wrocław (n = 629): University of Wrocław (UWr), Wrocław University of Science and Technology (PWr) and Wrocław Medical University (UM). The study used self-constructed questionnaires: physical activity questionnaire, health questionnaire, lifestyle questionnaire. The following statistical analyzes of the results were used: Shapiro-Wilk test, Pearson chi-square test independence, post-hoc test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation coefficient rank (Spearman) and Pearson's correlation coefficient. In the calculations, the package of computer programs STATISTICA v. 9.0 was used. Hypotheses verified at the level of p ≤0.05. Results: Health was the highest-rated one of the studied factors. In addition, it was found that as much as 67.7% of students from all universities represent a very good level of lifestyle. 68.4% of the respondents were characterized by a very good health potential. Research has shown that the physical activity of students from Medical University is at a higher level than students of PWr and UWr. Among the demographic variables, gender turned out to be important (men perform physical activity more often than women, while BMI and place of origin did not affect the physical activity of students). Studies have confirmed the relationship between all major variables (physical activity, lifestyle and health). The increase in the level of physical activity is accompanied by an increase in the level of lifestyle. A positive correlation between lifestyle factor and health condition was also observed.

Opis:
Introduction. Physical activity is one of the basic needs of people throughout their lives. Physical activity prevents many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, which have the highest mortality rate, both among urban and rural populations in Poland. The average life expectancy in Poland and the European Union is increasing. The proportion of children and adolescents under the age of 20 is decreasing slowly but steadily, while the proportion of older people (aged 65+) in the total population is gradually increasing. According to the forecast of the Central Statistical Office, the percentage of older people increased rapidly after 2010, and will reach 22.3% in 2030. The number of the elderly will increase from 5,134,000 in 2007 to 8,195,000 in 2030. The health situation of Poles is less favourable compared to other European Union states. The most common health risks are: nicotine, drug addiction, alcoholism and obesity. One of the causes of obesity is an unhealthy lifestyle. Lifestyle is a basic determinant of human health. Objective. The aim of this study is to present research results based on a literature review on the importance of physical activity for human health as an element of organizing and managing the lifestyle of urban and rural populations. Conclusions. Comprehensive measures should be taken to increase public health awareness and promote health education, especially among school-age children and youths, and to provide appropriate sports infrastructure in particularly neglected rural areas.

Mobile health applications provide individuals with a mobile tool that can be tailored to meet various health needs and physical activity goals, which is particularly important during the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated social distancing protocols. The consequence that the pandemic has on the mental health of university students has prompted and increased the demand of physical activity interventions. The aim of this study was to determine the self-perceived effects of mobile health applications on physical activity participation among university students. Participants included students registered in one of the faculties at a university in Johannesburg. Data collection took place by means of an electronic questionnaire using Google Forms as a platform, completed by a sample of 192 students. The findings in the study reflected that majority of university students use health applications to increase physical activity levels or to track current activity levels. Participants also indicated that specific health applications were used to set goals, monitor progress and receive feedback. Aerobic activities proved to be the more popular type of physical activity in comparison to anaerobic activity. This study concluded that health applications can be used as a tool to facilitate and promote physical activity participation in the university student population.

Opis:
Stress is one of the single most significant factor for many physical and psychological dilemma. Long-term exposure to stress or chronic stress can lead to serious physical and psychological problems such as headaches, fatigue, depression, anxiety, stomachache, heart problems, chest pain, asthma, hypertension, liver dysfunction, diabetes, arthritis, suppressed immune system , skin conditions, irregular ministerial cycle, infertility, accelerated aging process, and premature death. As under perennial and /or continual stress condition the body releases excessive cortisol hormone that results in aforementioned issues. Physical activity may beneficial for mental and physical body system. Under intense or endurance exercise however increase total cortisol released levels far above the moderate training modalities which can be a destructive factor for people under extreme negative stress and can make worse stress health risk conditions. Thus, caution is need to be considered for people with negative stress.Nonetheless, according to the American physical activity guideline 10 minutes moderate aerobic exercise such as walking in division of 2×10 min or 3×10 min per day that can be performed throughout the week, seems to be helpful alternative for all adult in part people with psychological negative stress.

The quality of life is a multidimensional notion. When studying it, one should take the physical, the psychological, the social, and the professional aspects into consid eration. Among them, the notion of the influence of obesity, understood as a modern -age disease, relates the quality of life to the notion of health, in the aspect of physical activity. The aim of the study carried out, was to determine the relationship be tween obesity in 18 -25 year - olds, and their physical activity, as well as the quality of their lives. The study was carried out by means a WHOQOL - BREF, and IPAQ survey questionnaires carried out on a group of 100 participants. The control group included pe ople whose BMI was within the norm, whereas the study group comprised people whose BMI was over 25. The results of the study have shown obesity to have a statistically significant negative impact on the quality of life in the physical, and mental domains, and as far as the general perception of health was concerned. In the study group, the mean weekly energy expenditure, was lower than in the control group. The physical activity of the obese, includes, mainly, activities based on light effort, and to a less er extent, those based on moderate effort. A comparative analysis has shown the level of physical activity to be significantly lower in obese women, in each type of physical effort, except light effort. This difference does not exist between the study, and control groups of men.

The scientific concept of human needs has an interdisciplinary nature and is associated with the standards of living and development, health and disease status, quality of life, and life satisfaction. Research results indicate that systematic physical activity at any ontogenesis period is of vital importance for optimal development and maintenance of physical efficiency, fitness, and health. Therefore, it has been assumed that physical activity is a health need of each man. The aim of the study is to find relationships between physical activity and health needs. The analysis was intended to reveal the importance, functions, and consequences of the impact of physical activity on the psychophysical condition of man based on examples from available literature. The relationships between physical activity and health needs have been presented from the perspective of public health and promotion targeted at improvement of public health in a way to ensure the best fulfilment of conscious and unconscious needs. According to WHO, health needs are disturbances in the health status or social well-being that require intervention measures such as treatment, rehabilitation, or social assistance as well as prevention measures. Systematic moderate physical activity is one of the most important factors with a beneficial effect on human physiological processes and improves the quality of life. The National Health Programme for 2016–2020 recommends increased physical activity among children, adolescents, and the elderly.

In the chain of causative factors and pathological processes which can lead to illness, disability, and death, there are many links, some known and some unknown. Our resources and means must be applied at that point in the causative chain where the best prospects lie for reducing the incidence of illness, disability, and death. Diseases due lifestyle and environmental factors now dominate our health statistics. Material standards of living and personal philosophy of life bear a close relationship to the origin and development of these diseases. In that respect, regular physical activity is seen as an essential component in a lifestyle which itself is the basis for the health promoting idea. In our review we look into physical activity and its influence on health.
Chorobogenny styl życia i czynniki środowiskowe dominują obecnie w naszych statystykach zdrowotności. Materialne warunki życia i filozofia osobista leżą u podstaw powstawania i rozwoju chorób.

Opis:
The article is about problems in increasing motive activity for children of primary school age, the aim of which is improving their health. Thanks to a sufficient amount of physical activity children of all age groups have an optimum level of health, physical development and will acquire motor skills. One of the important problems of our time is to improve the health of children. The study indicates a relatively low level of health in children of primary school age, which is associated with decreased levels of physical activity. Studies show that for children of 6 to 7 years of age the number of hours on average and high levels of motor activity tend to decrease. At the age of six 2 hours. 10 min (9,1%) are spent at the average level, 40 minutes (2.6 per cent) – at the high level, and at the age of seven – 1 hour. 7 min(7,35%) are spent at the average level, 20 min (1,05%) – at the high level. The greatest number of hours is spent at the basic level (44,5% at the age of 6, 39.4% – at the age of 7). At the age of six 88.3% of the time are given to the base and low level, at the age of seven – 91.6 %, 11.7 % and 8.4 % are given to the average and high levels accordingly, which indicates a sedentary lifestyle. The solution to the problem of preservation of health and ensuring harmonious development of personality in educational institutions is of great practical importance. In this regard physical culture, as the basis of ensuring the strengthening of children's health, has new challenges that require the development and creation of physical education system in secondary schools which provides improvement of all components in health - mental, social, physical. One of the conditions of effectiveness in the system of organization of sports and recreation activities is the introduction of various forms of work, taking into account the interests and motives of the children.
W artykule omówiono problemy dotyczące poprawy motywacji aktywności dzieci uczęszczających do szkół podstawowych. Dzięki odpowiedniej ilości aktywności fizycznej, dzieci ze wszystkich grup wiekowych mogą osiągnąć optymalny poziom zdrowia i rozwoju fizycznego, nabędą też odpowiednie umiejętności ruchowe. Jednym z warunków skuteczności w systemie organizacji ćwiczeń sportowych i rekreacyjnych jest wprowadzenie urozmaiconych form pracy, uwzględniających zainteresowania i motywacje dzieci.

The objective of the study was to investigate the career-choice motives for one’s entering the prison service as an operational officer, and the level of physical fitness. The study was conducted in April 2015, and included 100 officers employed in Biała Podlaska prison. The examined group consisted of 93 males; aged 23-52; mean age 37.2, and 7 females aged 3-43; mean age 37.7 (30-43). 61 (61%) of the males were employed as security guards, while 39 persons (39%), including 7 females, as clerks in the administration section. The study methods included: a physical fitness test consisting of 5 physical performance tests, recommended by the regulation of the Minister of Justice, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ) – long-form, questions designed by the author of the paper. Career-choice motives turned out to be conditioned purely be economic incentives and the professions’ stability as opposed to other professional specialties. The respondents were fit and engaged in numerous physical activates. The factors which significantly determined the level of one’s fitness depended on: age, education, a high self-report on physical fitness, total physical activity and the number of done sports. Originality of the study is based on investigating the condition of physical fitness of prison officers with the use of currently recommended assessment methods in Poland.

A significant decrease in physical activity and a growing incidence of obesity are becoming problems of contemporary times, the economic and social costs of which we are bound to face. The systemic actions undertaken are aimed at creating space for physical activity and shaping health-oriented attitudes among children and young people. Promotion of health-oriented attitudes among children is one of the ways of preventing illnesses associated with lifestyle, and are also a significant factor influencing the condition of society and future generations. This study forms a preliminary evaluation of attitudes among primary school students in Lublin towards physical activity – its preferred forms and frequency. Moreover, the study presents a preliminary and general analysis of pain within the locomotor system in children. A survey in the form of a questionnaire was conducted in a primary school in Lublin among children at various stages of education. The questionnaire contained data about the children’s age and gender. Other questions concerned preferred forms of physical activity, its frequency and attitudes of schoolchildren to physical activity. The results obtained indicate that the majority (99%) of the children definitely like to undertake physical activity in various forms and they regard it as fun and an interesting way of spending free time. A significant share (51%) of the respondents reply that they undertake physical activity every day (apart from activities organized at school). However, the number of affirmative answers to the question about pain is worrying. The results obtained demonstrate quite a high level of physical activity among schoolchildren. However, the alarming results concerning incidences of pain (47%) point to the need for further indepth research on this area.

Celem badań była ocena zależności pomiędzy subiektywną oceną stanu zdrowia a aktywnością fizyczną wśród młodych kobiet i mężczyzn w wieku do 30 roku życia. Narzędzie badawcze składało się z dwóch części – pierwszą stanowił autorski kwestionariusz ankiety dotyczący samooceny stanu zdrowia i opisu podejmowanej aktywności fizycznej, natomiast drugą – kwestionariusz Brief Inventory of Thriving (BIT).
According to the WHO definition, good health is a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The factors that significantly determine the human health status are health-related behaviors (including physical activity). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between self-assessment of health status and physical activity among young women and men under 30 years of age. Research tool consisted of two parts – an author-made questionnaire for self-assessment of health status and description of physical activity and Brief Inventory of Thriving (BIT). The research was conducted in the period February–April in 2015 on a group of 368 respondents. Physically active people better assess their health status than physical inactive persons. Self-assessment of health status is higher among men than among women. Physically active people are more often happy and full of energy and less often feel fatigue.

Rising life expectancy of the populations living in highly developed countries has been observed over recent decades. The number of people worldwide above the age of 60 is increasing at an unprecedented pace. The purpose of the study was to determine the significance of physical activity of older people in the process of successful ageing. Research methods. This article is a review of Polish and foreign studies considering the relationship between physical activity and successful ageing. The elaboration refers to the results of surveys published in the reviewed scientific journals including empirical studies mainly based on diagnostic survey. Study results. A thorough analysis identified three parts: the concept of successful ageing, the relationship between physical activity and health, and physical activity of older persons in Poland compared to their counterparts abroad. A review of the literature and documents has revealed that one of the main factors affecting successful ageing is physical activity. Conclusions. Physical activity and successful ageing are different in the assessed communities. Thus, it is necessary to monitor physical activity of older people in the context of successful ageing – in order to provide conducive circumstances to activating this social group and thus reducing social security cost.

Introduction and objectives. Although physical activity has been found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and depression in the general population, little is known about physical patterns and the link with postnatal depressive symptoms and awareness of cardiovascular risk factors in postpartum women. The aim of this study was to examine physical activity patterns and their link to depressive symptoms in postpartum women. The secondary endpoint was the assessment of health awareness in women six months after delivery. Material and methods. Eighty postpartum women with a mean age of 27±4 years (group A – 40 physically active women, group B – 40 women leading a sedentary lifestyle) completed a self-report questionnaire and The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) questionnaire. Results. In group A, the types of physical activity undertaken in the six-month period after delivery were as follows: 20 women – housework (180 min/session), 18 women – gentle walks (180 min/session), 16 women – group fitness classes (60 min/session), 6 – rapid walking (40 min/session), 3 women – swimming (60 min/session), 2 women – jogging (45 min/session), 1 woman – squash, (45 min/session) 1 – dancing (90 min/session), 1 – tennis (60min/session). Group B declared a sedentary lifestyle and physical activity of less than 30 min a day. The level of health awareness was statistically better in women who were physically active six months after delivery than in women who led a sedentary lifestyle. On a scale with a maximum 55 points, the mean scores were 47.4 in group A and 31.2 in group B (p=0.001). Depressive symptoms were more pronounced in group B. Twenty seven women from group A and three women from group B returned to their pre-pregnancy weight (p=0.04). Conclusions. Women who were physically active after delivery were characterized by higher health awareness and more frequent return to pre-pregnancy weight. Physical activity may be important for reducing the risk of postnatal depression.

The aim of the study was to measure the association among Health Belief Model (HBM) variables and self-reported physical activity of young adults. A survey research protocol was employed. Participants were 391 university students (245 females), 19–22 years old (–x = 21.41±3.49). Analyses revealed that the strongest predictor of physical activity is self-efficacy, followed by perceived benefits and the perceived barriers. Other HBM variables, such as the perceived susceptibility or perceived severity, were not associated with physical activity. On the basis of the obtained results it may be concluded that the HBM as a model of avoiding diseases is not adequate to explain and predict physical activity of young adults.

Opis:
Background. The introduction and maintenance of healthy habits in the field of physical activity at the early stage of life is particularly important for public health. With increasing of public awareness in physical activity, researchers are increasingly questioning its determinants in different age groups. In this paper we focus on variables such as age, sex and place of residence. Objectives. To determine what selected socio-demographic factors influence the level of physical activity of school youth from the eastern region of Poland in different domains of daily life. Material and Methods. A random sample of 916 Polish school youth from Secondary Schools from Eastern Region of Poland aged 16-18 was interviewed in spring 2016 by diagnostic survey method with the use of the official Polish long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results. Analysing the relationship between gender and the level of physical activity statistically significant differences were found in all domains in favour of boys. The level of total physical activity in girls was 5345.5 MET-min./week, whereas in boys – 6556.6 MET-min./week. In the area of total physical activity, the highest values were observed in pupils from small towns and villages, with lower values in the youth living in large and medium-sized cities. When the relationship of age with the level of physical activity in particular domains was examined, only the activity in the work/ school domain (p = 0.0129) spoke in favour of the youngest pupils (2578.7 MET-min./week) when compared to the oldest ones (2226.4 MET-min./week). Conclusions. The level of physical activity in young people from the Eastern region of Poland is decreasing with age, both in girls and boys. It is therefore important, especially for the group emerging adulthood, to offer a wide variety of updated, involving, age and gender-oriented school physical activity classes that could be easily practised outside the school environment to improve the level of physical activity in leisure domain.
Wprowadzenie. Cel pracy. Poznanie jakie wybrane czynniki socjodemograficzne warunkują aktywność fizyczną młodzieży ponadgimnazjalnej ze wschodniego regionu Polski w różnych domenach życia. Materiał i metoda. Badania przeprowadzono wiosną 2016 roku na losowo wybranej grupie 916 uczniów ponadgimnazjalnych, będących w przedziale wieku 16-18 lat. Badania przeprowadzono metodą sondażu diagnostycznego, przy wykorzystaniu oficjalnej polskiej wersji Międzynarodowego Kwestionariusza Aktywności Fizycznej (IPAQ-wersji długiej). Wyniki. Analizując związek płci z poziomem aktywności fizycznej stwierdzono istotne statystycznie zróżnicowanie z całkowitym poziomem aktywności fizycznej we wszystkich analizowanych obszarach na korzyść chłopców. Poziom całkowitej aktywności fizycznej u dziewcząt wynosił 5345,5 MET-min./tydz., podczas gdy u chłopców - 6556,6 MET-min./tydz. W obszarze całkowitej aktywności fizycznej zaobserwowano najwyższe wartości u uczniów z małych miast i wsi, z niższymi wartościami u młodzieży mieszkającej w dużych i średnich miastach. Gdy badano związek wieku z poziomem aktywności fizycznej w poszczególnych domenach życia, jedynie aktywność w domenie praca/szkoła (p = 0,0129) przemawiała na korzyść najmłodszych uczniów (2578,7 MET-min./tydz.) w porównaniu do najstarszych (2226,4 MET-min./tydz.). Wnioski.

Obesity has generated a pandemic in relation to public health; however, depending on the type of exercise, intensity, frequency, and time spent exercising, it provides different effects on the human body. The present investigation has the objective of comparing the effect of two modalities of exercise, aquatic and grounded, on the body composition of overweight and obese adults. The present was an experimental study with 26 overweight and obese adults distributed in two exercise groups: aquatic and grounded. Both groups received 12 weeks of moderate intensity aerobic training assessed with a heart rate monitor and determined through the maximum heart rate on each individual grounded and aquatic training. The study variables were Body Mass Index (BMI), fat percentage, and lean mass. After carrying out the exercise program significant differences were observed in the reduction of BMI as well as in the percentage of fat in both sexes ( < 0.01). No differences were observed in relation to BMI reduction, nor the percentage of fat evaluated before and after by different exercise modalities; likewise, there was no difference in either sex. In conclusion, exercise provides favorable changes in body composition variables; however, in this study, it does not rely on the exercise modality.

Aim. An evaluation of lifestyle changes (physical activity, diet) in patients after breast cancer surgery. Materials and method. 200 women after breast cancer surgery were surveyed. The respondents were asked whether the surgery caused a change in their diet and physical activity. An analysis was performed concerning the education, place of residence and age of the respondents. Results. Prior to being diagnosed with breast cancer, about one third of the respondents were concerned about their diet and physical activity. After the surgery more than a half of the respondents were concerned about a healthy lifestyle. Women below 50 years old with higher education, who live in a city, were concerned about their diet and physical activity both before and after surgery. Conclusions. As a result of the breast cancer surgery, lifestyle changes were most often found in women aged 50-69 years old with higher education who lived in a city. Statistical relevance of the results was noted.

The article aims to draw attention to the importance of physical and social activity in the elderly. It emphasizes the need for the care of one’s physical and intellectual condition. It also accentuates the fact that being needed in the family and maintaining a social life is crucial for each senior. The article also stresses the important role that Pope John Paul II fulfilled in intergenerational relations. Peaceful and happy aging is largely dependent on making young people and seniors aware that we must take care of our health in advance, and that it is never too late to be active

Opis:
In frame of the European Project CHANGE (Care of Health Advertising New Goals for Elderly people) the study of health behaviours regarding healthy nutrition and physical activity was conducted on patients in age of 60 and more covered with care of community nurses. Objectives: To assess association between physical activity and nutritional habits, stages of change of these behaviors among older patients and other psychosocial conditions regarding planning of health education intervention to change their health behaviours. Methods: 108 persons at age avg. 69.6 (SD 60–87) were interviewed by questionnaire (assessing the frequency of intake of particular food products, physical activity, motivation and stage of change these behaviors, satisfaction with physical condition and general wellbeing) by the trained community nurses. Results: Results showed sedentary style of life in most studied patients. Among physical activity the frequency of daily walking was the highest (69%), while 70% of older people did not exercise. In study group 42% were not aware of importance of physical activity for their health. But the awareness of importance of healthy nutrition was high, and about half of study group (48%) reported that they eat meals with reduced fat, and 80% eat high fiber food. The rules of healthy nutrition were not fully respected. Positive correlations were shown between intention to change, stage of change of health behavior and performance of physical activity and healthy eating. Those behaviors were positively related to well-being and satisfaction with physical condition. Conclusions: Health promotion programs for older patients should be planned in different way depending on their stage of change of health behaviors. There is a need to raise awareness of importance of physical activity, and to educate older patients about recommended types of exercises and recreation. In case of recommendations of healthy nutrition, the awareness is high and performance definitely more frequent, therefore health promotion programs should stimulate development of permanent social support to maintain change of these behaviors.

BackgroundWhen assessing physical activity (PA), particular attention should be paid to medical university students who are taught to be health care professionals (HCPs) responsible for maintaining health in humans. However, different studies have shown that HCPs exhibit the same unhealthy behaviors as the general population. This study analyzed PA among medical university students of different faculties and their adherence to current PA recommendations.Material and MethodsData from 216 medical university students of physiotherapy, dietetics and pharmacy, including males (N = 44) and females (N = 172), the mean age of 22.3±1.8 years, were collected. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire in its long form (IPAQ-LF) was used to assess and classify PA behaviors. The results were analyzed in accordance with World Health Organization recommendations regarding PA.ResultsOver 60% of all the students were classified as active during all-day activity. However, while analyzing PA in different domains, the same shares of all the students were still insufficiently active during leisure time, and so they did not meet the recommendation of >75 min/week of vigorous PA, >150 min/week of moderate PA or an equivalent combination. All the students self-reported PA mainly in the work and transport domains. Generally, physiotherapy students were the most active and performed PA with higher intensity.ConclusionsThis study revealed a low level of leisure time PA among the students, and no habit of regular PA. Some changes in medical education should be suggested to include physical education as a long-term subject in medical school curricula. Future research is needed to investigate the exercise barriers that students perceive, which can guide future interventions aimed at improving their PA, and thereby impact on the quality of health care which they will provide.

Opis:
Objectives: Activities of daily living are currently the simplest form of activity. For many people this is the only activity in which they participate. In this connection, it is important to determine the level of physical activity connected with daily habits including occupational activities. The main goal of the presented study has been to assess the level of activities of daily living in different age groups and its differentiation by season and working (WD) and non-working days (NWD). Material and Methods: The study group (urban citizens, N = 106) was divided into young (Y) (N = 40), middle-aged (M) (N = 38), and senior (S) (N = 28) participants. The daily step number on 7 consecutive days during 4 seasons between June 2012 and 2013 was counted objectively using pedometers. The long-form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was completed each season as a subjective assessment. Results: The daily step number for the whole group for the year was (median) 6615 (range: 3648–10 709), fewer than recommended. The median (Me) was highest in group M (Me = 6994, range: 3648–10 709) followed by Y (Me = 6957, range: 4094–10 321) and S (Me = 5469, range: 3743–8955). The lowest daily step number occurred in winter (M = 6208, Y = 6063, S = 5242), and the highest in spring (Y = 7385) or summer (M = 7717; S = 6095). All groups had a greater daily step number on WDs compared to NWDs (Y: 8411 vs. 5744, M: 7612 vs. 5839, S: 6327 vs. 4580; p < 0.01 for all). Pedometer-tracked values did not correlate with the IPAQ results. Conclusions: Activity level in Polish urban society is low, especially on NWDs and in colder months. The daily number of steps is highest in the middle-aged group, which may be connected with working status. Objective methods are recommended for assessing physical activity level. The aim of the article is to present the factors which affect the choice of place of recreation, as well as indicate the preferred forms of physical activity taken up there. The authors also discussed the relationship between distance from open areas and frequency of visits. Moreover, they evaluated current knowledge about the role of the natural environment as a physical recreation space. The research was conducted among a group of 305 physically active individuals (students of the Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk), using questionnaires. The respondents defined the role of location in comparison to other motivational factors for a range of physical activities (recreation). They also spoke about their preferred forms of physical activity in the natural environment, compared to the roles of natural and human environments with regard to physical activity. They also provided an answer to the question whether an open area which does not provide respondents with an opportunity to undertake their favoured recreation would remain of interest. The study results demonstrate the unquestionable importance of having access to attractive natural surroundings with respect to physical activity. This allows a relation to be made between leisure in the natural environment and an improvement in the health of the physically active.

Health inequalities are being increasingly considered in describing population health and creating health policies. Particular emphasis is put on the so-called social inequalities, however, it is emphasized that they may also be conditioned by biological or environmental factors. The latter type of inequalities is the subject of interest in the present study. The presented research results are a part of wider diagnostic activities that were undertaken within the Onkogranty II project. They include a comparison of data on the epidemiology of cancer caused by low physical activity and poor diet in the province of Silesia and throughout the country.

Materiał i metody. Studenci innych kierunków wykazywali niższy poziom zachowań zdrowotnych i aktywności fizycznej.

Background. Decreased physical activity (PA), sedentary lifestyle and inappropriate dietary habits have been observed in modern societies in the past decades. Material and methods. Data were collected in summer, 2014. The representative (by age & gender) sample consisted of 910 adults. The research (entitled “E-Harmónia”) was carried out in two Hungarian counties, Baranya and Zala. We developed a tablet-based survey to examine PA using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaire and collected anthropometric data with body composition monitors. Data analysis was carried out with SPSS 22.0 for Windows. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Results. The sample size of adult participants was 910, their mean age was 43.2±14.4 years. We examined the level of physical activity in view of sociodemographic inequalities, like gender, age, education, marital status, employment form. Women and aged and young people were found to do carry out significantly less leisure time PA (p<0.05). Furthermore, we found significant relationship in PA and education level, age and employment form of the adults (p<0.001). Conclusions. In the present study according to the IPAQ questionnaires results we found significant differences in physical activity level and sociodemographic parameters, which helps to identify different risk groups to increase the effectiveness of phyisical activity interventions.
Wprowadzenie. We współczesnych społeczeństwach w ostatnich dekadach zaobserwowano spadek poziomu aktywności fizycznej, siedzący tryb życia oraz nieodpowiednie nawyki żywieniowe. Materiał i metody. Dane zebrano latem 2014 r.

Opis:
Naturally occurring products have gained popularity in recent decades, especially due to their less adverse effects on human health. Various Aloe species are widespread all over the world. Aloe vera is one of the plants exhibiting multiple benefits and has gained considerable importance in clinical research. Historically, it has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes. It has attracted the attention of many researchers because of its different properties. More than 200 different biologically active substances were found in this plant that contributed to the fact it has been used to treat various types of diseases. The healthy effect of Aloe vera is primarily attributed to the polysaccharides contained in the gel of the leaves. It has been traditionally used to treat various conditions, including psoriasis, sunburn or radiation-related dermatitis, mucositis, oesophagitis or lichen planus. Aloe vera has also found application in wound healing, treatment of burns, protection against skin damage caused by X-ray, intestinal problems, reduction of plaque and gingivitis, regulating the levels of plasma lipoproteins, reduction of blood sugar levels and improving the immune system. Other biological activities of aloe, such as antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and immunomodulatory have also been documented in numerous studies. This review examines the possible applications of Aloe vera in clinical trials.

At this point it becomes important to acknowledge the definition of homeostasis put forward by W. Cannon (1932) in the thirties. This definition mostly refers to autoregulation of biological processes. In general it stands for internal and external balance of human body that can be changed by physical exercises.

Opis:
The impact of physical activity on mental health is widely described in literature. Less attention is given to factors which may modify this correlation, except for gender. The aim of this study was to conduct a qualitative assessment of such papers relating to children and young people. Selected papers were evaluated with regard to additional factors related to family, school and neighborhood. Attention was drawn to the definitions of these variables, the methods of analysis, and the content of the discussion. The starting point for this study included 7 systematic reviews published in 2006–2018. A total of 161 full articles described in detail in those reviews, and representing different research patterns, were selected for qualitative analysis. They met the criteria for the type of publication, mental health outcome, the direction of association, and the age group. A supplementary section of this paper contains a review of Polish literature from the Polish Medical Bibliography, and an analysis of national studies and some more recent papers not included in the analyzed reviews. It was demonstrated that 33 papers analyzed environmental variables to a greater degree than the characteristics of the sample. Twenty-three papers containing the results of statistical analyses were considered to be of particular interest. Almost 50% of these included both the socio-economic position of the family and the characteristics of the neighborhood. However, only 1 featured stratification of the sample with regard to contextual environmental variables. The obtained results are of great practical importance. Firstly, development of the research into environmental moderators should be advocated. Secondly, the social context in which adolescents grow up should be taken into account when designing intervention programs. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(4):423–39

Opis:
A vegetarian diet may be adopted for various reasons that can include ecological, economic, religious, ethical and health considerations. In the latter case they arise from the desire to lose weight, in tackling obesity, improving physical fitness and/or in reducing the risk of acquiring certain diseases. It has been shown that properly applied vegetarian diet is the most effective way of reducing body mass (expressed as BMI), improving the plasma lipid profile and in decreasing the incidence of high arterial blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome and arteriosclerosis. In addition, improved insulin sensitivity together with lower rates of diabetes and cancer has been observed. Some studies have however found that a vegetarian diet may result in changes adversely affecting the body. These could include; hyperhomocysteinaemia, protein deficiency, anaemia, decreased creatinine content in muscles and menstrual disruption in women who undertake increased physical activity. Some of these changes may decrease the ability for performing activities that require physical effort. Nevertheless, on balance it can be reasonably concluded that the beneficial effects of a vegetarian diet significantly, by far, outweigh the adverse ones. It should also be noted that the term ‘vegetarian diet’ is not always clearly defined in the literature and it may include many dietary variations.

Opis:
Wyniki: Na podstawie przeprowadzonego badania stwierdzono statystycznie istotną różnicę pomiędzy poziomem aktywności ruchowej osób starszych a oceną stanu zdrowia, samopoczucia, jakości życia oraz poziomu energii życiowej. Ocena wymienionych czynników wzrasta wraz ze wzrostem poziomu aktywności fizycznej. Wnioski: Niezbędne jest podjęcie systemowych działań na rzecz aktywizacji, zwłaszcza fizycznej, obecnych i przyszłych seniorów poprzez wdrożenie działań i programów profilaktycznych wpływających na proces pomyślnego starzenia się.
Introduction: Demographic changes represented by the aging of the Polish population lead to increasing costs related to e.g. health care and social benefits and result in the necessity to introduce systematic solutions for maintaining and improving health and fitness in senior citizens. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of physical exercise on the maintenance of higher performance parameters by the elderly. Material and methods: 220 individuals were examined, and further analysis was based on complete results acquired from 198 persons aged 60–70, including 102 females and 96 males. All the subjects were able to independently handle all routine activities. Based on the assessment of their physical activity, the subjects were divided into the study group (65 individuals – 32 females and 33 males), which included individuals on average involved in physical activities for the minimum of 75 min/week (walks, cycling, exercise, etc.) and the control group consisting of those with no or low level of motor activity (133 individuals – 70 females and 63 males). The study investigated the relation between physical activity and health, sense of well-being, assessment of quality of life and level of vitality. The study employed standardized questionnaire designed by this author. Statistical analysis was conducted using chi-square test of independence and Student’s t-test. Results: The findings show a statistically significant correlation between the higher level of motor activity in the elderly and better assessment of their health, well-being, quality of life and level of vitality. Conclusions: It is necessary to initiate systematic measures aimed at promoting active life-style, and in particular physical exercise, among present and future senior citizens, by implementing preventive measures supporting the process of aging successfully.

Opis:
Background: The appropriate level of physical activity according to WHO recommendations for adults aged 18–64 years is 150 minutes per week in multiple shorter bouts of at least 10 minutes each: e.g., 30 minutes of moderateintensity activity 5 times per week. Regular physical activity is essential for health and well-being at any age. Many studies conducted among residents of the Silesian province have confirmed that their physical activity is insufficient. Data from a survey conducted in 2004 by the Central Statistical Office of Poland showed that the surveyed residents of the Silesian province older than 15 years of age spent their leisure time mostly in a passive way, or took activities not requiring intense physical effort. Therefore, we undertook a study evaluating physical activity in a selected group of white-collar workers who spent most of the time during the day in a seated position. Objective of the study: The objective of the study was to evaluate various forms of physical activity undertaken by white-collar workers. Material and methods: In the project, a questionnaire survey was conducted in a selected group of white-collar workers which consisted of employees of the City Office of Sosnowiec. A total of 191 persons took part in the survey: 57 (29.8%) men and 134 (70.2%) women. Survey questions concerned different forms of physical activity taken by white-collar workers. Results: Physical activity in the study group of whitecollar workers varied significantly depending on the gender. Males more willingly engaged in various forms of sports activity than women. Men were found to jog, play ball games and tennis, and exercise in the gym more readily than women. However, women reported taking walks, exercising, or riding on rollers significantly more often than men. The activity of women was associated with housework, such as cleaning, doing laundry, shopping, or cooking, to a greater extent than that of men. Men more often than women travelled by car, and this difference was statistically significant. By contrast, women more often than men travelled to work on foot or by public transport. Conclusions: The majority of respondents (80.1%) declare taking physical activity. However, the analysis of questionnaire data shows that respondents spend their leisure time mainly in a passive way or on low-intensity activities, which do not require substantial physical effort, such as walks, gymnastics, activities at the swimming pool, or cycling. The results point to the need for more effective promotion of physical activity (particularly in the leisure time) amongst white-collar employees who spend most of the time at work in a seated position.

Opis:
There is strong evidence that good nutrition and regular physical activity reduce the risk of several short-term health problems like anaemia or obesity, while also preventing long-term diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis or cardiovascular diseases. It is important, however, to analyse this relationship under a holistic approach to the concept of health, which goes far beyond disease prevention and comprises well-being. From this perspective, health can be seen as the condition that allows the individual to express his full potential as a human being, considering its interdependent dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial and environmental. A healthy lifestyle, including not only diet and physical activity, but also sleeping patterns, as well as other factors that have influence on mental and social well-being, is crucial for an optimal child development. The present analysis focuses on children´s diet and physical activity as key determinants of health under a life-course approach. We discuss the early origins of health and disease, along with factors associated with the “building” of diet and physical activity habits that set the foundations for lifelong health.

Opis:
There is no doubt that public authorities may be directly or indirectly involved in economic activity. A traditional way of distinguish state activity which is not subject to the rules of the market is to decide when the state acts as public authority. In case of state activity two category of situations should be distinguished: these where the state is engaged in an economic activity (sphere of dominium) and these when the state acts by exercising of public powers (sphere of imperium). In the opinion of the author of the article, the distinction between imperium and dominium is still relevant. According to the Competition and Consumer Protection Act of February 16, 2007, an entrepreneur is inter alia natural and legal person, as well as an organisational unit without a legal status to which legislation grants legal capacity, organising or providing public utility services which do not constitute economic activity in the meaning of the provisions on freedom of economic activity. The President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection found that public authorities exercising their administrative powers (sphere of imperium) may be classified as entrepreneurs. In the recent decisions which were subject of judicial review the President of UOKiK decided that the National Health Fund – a state authority responsible for organization and management of health care services in Poland – is an entrepreneur in the meaning of the Polish law (act on competition and consumer protection). The aim of this article is to answer the question whether competition rules should be applied to the state activity in the imperium sphere. This article will focus on the notion of an entrepreneur (undertaking) in polish and EU law in the context of the activity of the state.

Opis:
Strong evidence exists that fitness is a physical health resource, which serves to protect one’s health. There is still uncertainty about which fitness level provides the best health outcome and which measurements can be used for analyzing this question. This cross-sectional study analyzed 462 (64.07% female) German middle-aged adults regarding their fitness status, physical activity (Non-Exercise test), body composition (Body Mass Index) and heart-related health status. Motor tests were used to measure the health-related fitness status. The heart-related health status was surveyed by questionnaire and diagnosis was done in part by a physician. Relationships between risk factors and fitness factors are visible during the correlative analysis. They are substantially more visible in the differentiation of people with and without risks. People with low fitness show noticeable risks in activity, Body Mass Index and heart-related health. People with high fitness show health resources for activity, Body Mass Index and heart-related health. This study points out that all fitness dimensions influence one’s heart-related health in a positive way. Fitness is measured objectively and includes all health-related fitness dimensions such as endurance, strength, coordination and flexibility. Apart from this standardization, we ask for more longitudinal studies and more objective health measurements.
