Opis:: Let f: (X,A) → (X,A) be a self map of a pair of compact polyhedra. It is known that f has at least N(f;X,A) fixed points on X. We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a finite set P (|P| = N(f;X,A)) to be the fixed point set of a map in the relative homotopy class of the given map f. As an application, a new lower bound for the number of fixed points of f on Cl(X-A) is given.

Opis:: Examples exist of smooth maps on the boundary of a smooth manifold M which allow continuous extensions over M without fixed points but no such smooth extensions. Such maps are studied here in more detail. They have a minimal fixed point set when all transversally fixed maps in their homotopy class are considered. Therefore we introduce a Nielsen fixed point theory for transversally fixed maps on smooth manifolds without or with boundary, and use it to calculate the minimum number of fixed points in cases where continuous map extensions behave differently from smooth ones. In the appendix it is shown that a subset of a smooth manifold can be realized as the fixed point set of a smooth map in a given homotopy class if and only if it can be realized as the fixed point set of a continuous one. A special case of this result is used in a proof of the paper.

Opis:: In the paper finite-dimensional semilinear dynamical control systems described by fractional-order state equations with the Hilfer fractional derivative are discussed. The formula for a solution of the considered systems is presented and derived using the Laplace transform. Bounded nonlinear function f depending on a state and controls is used. New sufficient conditions for controllability without constraints are formulated and proved using Rothe’s fixed point theorem and the generalized Darbo fixed point theorem. Moreover, the stability property is used to formulate constrained controllability criteria. An illustrative example is presented to give the reader an idea of the theoretical results obtained. A transient process in an electrical circuit described by a system of Hilfer type fractional differential equations is proposed as a possible application of the study.

Opis:: The designing of transmultiplexer systems relies on determining filters for the transmitter and receiver sides of multicarrier communication system. The perfect reconstruction conditions lead to the bilinear equations for FIR filter coefficients. Generally there is no way of finding all possible solutions. This paper describes methods of finding a large family of solutions. Particular attention is devoted to obtaining algorithms useful in fixed-point arithmetic needed to design the integer filters. As a result, the systems perform perfect reconstruction of signals. Additionally, a simple method is presented to transform any transmultiplexer into an unlimited number of different transmultiplexers. Finally, two examples of integer filters that meet perfect reconstruction conditions are shown. The first illustrates a FIR filter which does not require multiplications. The frequency properties of filters and signals are discussed for the second example.

Opis:: For every predual $X$ of $\ell_1$ such that the standard basis in $\ell_1$ is weak$^*$ convergent, we give explicit models of all Banach spaces $Y$ for which the Banach-Mazur distance $d(X,Y)=1$. As a by-product of our considerations, we obtain some new results in metric fixed point theory. First, we show that the space $\ell_1$, with a predual $X$ as above, has the stable weak$^*$ fixed point property if and only if it has almost stable weak$^*$ fixed point property, i.e. the dual $Y^*$ of every Banach space $Y$ has the weak$^*$ fixed point property (briefly, $\sigma(Y^*,Y)$-FPP) whenever $d(X,Y)=1$. Then, we construct a predual $X$ of $\ell_1$ for which $\ell_1$ lacks the stable $\sigma(\ell_1,X)$-FPP but it has almost stable $\sigma(\ell_1,X)$-FPP, which in turn is a strictly stronger property than the $\sigma(\ell_1,X)$-FPP. Finally, in the general setting of preduals of $\ell_1$, we give a sufficient condition for almost stable weak$^*$ fixed point property in $\ell_1$ and we prove that for a wide class of spaces this condition is also necessary.

Opis:: Let $C$ be a convex compact subset of a uniformly convex Banach space. Let $\{T_t\}_{t \geq0}$ be a strongly-continuous nonexpansive semigroup on $C$. Consider the iterative process defined by the sequence of equations $$x_{k+1} =c_k T_{t_{k+1}}(x_{k+1})+(1-c_k)x_k.$$ We prove that, under certain conditions on $\{c_k\}$ and $\{t_k\}$, the sequence $\{x_k\}_{n=1}^\infty$ converges strongly to a common fixed point of the semigroup $\{T_t\}_{t \geq0}$. There are known results on convergence of such iterative processes for nonexpansive semigroups in Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces with the Opial property, and also weak convergence results in Banach spaces that are simultaneously uniformly convex and uniformly smooth. In this paper, we do not assume the Opial property or uniform smoothness of the norm.

Opis:: In this paper we use fixed point methods to prove asymptotic stability results of the zero solution of a class of totally nonlinear neutral differential equations with functional delay. The study concerns $x^\prime (t)= -a(t)x^3(t) + c(t)x^\prime (t-r(t)) + b(t) x^3 (t-r(t)) $. The equation has proved very challenging in the theory of Liapunov’s direct method. The stability results are obtained by means of Krasnoselskii-Burton’s theorem and they improve on the work of T.A. Burton (see Theorem 4 in [Liapunov functionals, fixed points, and stability by Krasnoselskii’s theorem, Nonlinear Studies 9 (2001), 181–190]) in which he takes c=0 in the above equation

Opis:: This paper refers to application of the Schauder's fixed point theorem together with linear controllability results in getting the sufficient controllability conditions for various kinds of controllability and for different types of nonlinear control systems. The following nonlinear control systems are considered : finite-dimensional systems, systems with delays in control or in the state variables, and infinite-dimensional systems. Opis:: In this paper the problem of the influence of fixed point computation on numerical solutions of linear differential equations of fractional order is considered. It is a practically important problem, because of potential possibilities of using dynamical systems of fractional order in the tasks of control and filtering. Opis:: In this manuscript, we study the existence, uniqueness and various kinds of Ulam stability including Ulam-Hyers stability, generalized Ulam-Hyers stability, Ulam-Hyers-Rassias stability, and generalized Ulam-Hyers-Rassias stability of the solution to an implicit nonlinear fractional differential equations corresponding to an implicit integral boundary condition. We develop conditions for the existence and uniqueness by using the classical fixed point theorems such as Banach contraction principle and Schaefer's fixed point theorem. For stability, we utilize classical functional analysis. The main results are well illustrated with an example.

Opis:: In this article we apply an extension of a Leggett-Williams type fixed point theorem to a two-point boundary value problem for a 2n-th order ordinary differential equation. The fixed point theorem employs concave and convex functionals defined on a cone in a Banach space. Inequalities that extend the notion of concavity to 2n-th order differential inequalities are derived and employed to provide the necessary estimates. Symmetry is employed in the construction of the appropriate Banach space.

Opis:: The steady state solutions of a nonlinear digital cellular neural network with ω neural units and a nonnegative variable parameter λ are sought. We show that λ = 1 is a critical value such that the qualitative behavior of our network changes. More specifically, when ω is odd, then for λ ∈ [0, 1), there is one positive and one negative steady state, and for λ ∈ [1, ∞), steady states cannot exist; while when ω is even, then for λ ∈ [0, 1), there is one positive and one negative steady state, and for λ = 1, there are no nontrivial steady states, and for λ ∈ (1, ∞), there are two fully oscillatory steady states. Furthermore, the number of existing nontrivial solutions cannot be improved. It is hoped that our results are of interest to digital neural network designers.

Opis:: We show that $\omega_0 (X) = \lim_{T\to\infty} \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0} \omega^T (X, \varepsilon)$ is a measure of noncompactness defined on some subsets of the space $C(\mathbb{R}^+) = \{x\colon \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R},\ x\ \text{continuous}\}$ furnished with the distance defined by the family of seminorms $|x|_n$. Moreover, using a technique associated with the measures of noncompactness, we prove the existence of solutions of a quadratic Urysohn integral equation on an unbounded interval. This measure allows to obtain theorems on the existence of solutions of a integral equations on an unbounded interval under a weaker assumptions then the assumptions of theorems obtained by applying two-component measures of noncompactness.

P. Chen and M. H. Shin , J. Math. Anal. Appl. 71 (1979), no. 2, 516–524; MR0548780]. The author is especially concerned with W(R). Algebraic operations in W(R) are defined and basic rules for arithmetic operations on approximate values are proved. Moreover, functions with values in W(R) are also investigated. Finally, a fixed point theorem for fuzzy mappings is stated and an example is given [for the proof see the author, ibid. 83 (1981), no. 2, 566–569; MR0641351].

Opis:: A Lefschetz-type coincidence theorem for two maps f,g: X → Y from an arbitrary topological space to a manifold is given: $I_{fg} = λ _{fg}$, that is, the coincidence index is equal to the Lefschetz number. It follows that if $λ_{fg} ≠ 0$ then there is an x ∈ X such that f(x) = g(x). In particular, the theorem contains well-known coincidence results for (i) X,Y manifolds, f boundary-preserving, and (ii) Y Euclidean, f with acyclic fibres. It also implies certain fixed point results for multivalued maps with "point-like" (acyclic) and "sphere-like" values.

Opis:: Shaft is a machine element which is used to transmit rotary motion or torque. During transmission of motion, however, the machine shaft doesn’t always rotate with a constant angular velocity. Because of unstable current or due to sudden acceleration and deceleration, the machine shaft will rotate at a variable angular velocity. It is this rotary motion that generates the moment of inertial force, causing the machine shaft to have torsional deformation. However, due to the elasticity of the material, the shaft produces torsional vibration. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to determine the optimal parameters of dynamic vibration absorber to eliminate torsional vibration of the rotating shaft that varies with time. The new results in this paper are summarized as follows: Firstly, the author determines the optimal parameters by using the minimum quadratic torque method. Secondly, the maximization of equivalent viscous resistance method is used for determining the optimal parameters. Thirdly, the author gives the optimal parameters of dynamic vibration absorber based on the fixed-point method. In this paper, the optimum parameters are found in an explicit analytical solutions, helping the scientists to easily find the optimal parameters for eliminating torsional vibration of the rotating shaft.

Opis:: W Instytucie Niskich Temperatur i Badań Strukturalnych PAN we Wrocławiu znajduje się państwowy wzorzec jednostki miary temperatury dla zakresu od 13,8033 K do 273,16 K. Posiadanie wzorca państwowego obliguje do przekazywania wartości jednostki temperatury wzorcom niższych rzędów oraz termometrom użytkowym, w celu zapewnienia spójności pomiarowej. Laboratorium podjęło się wykonywania usług wzorcowania czujników temperatury w zakresie niskich temperatur. W 2005 r. uzyskano środki finansowe z funduszy strukturalnych SPO-WKP, za które rozbudowano i zmodernizowano istniejące stanowiska pomiarowe stosowane do wykonywania prac usługowych, w wyniku czego możliwe jest wzorcowanie termometrów także w wyższym zakresie temperatur aż do 160 oC. Zmodernizowane, jak i nowo powstałe stanowiska pomiarowe będą objęte systemem zarządzania jakością zgodnie z wymaganiami Polskiego Centrum Akredytacji.
At the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research (INTiBS) in Wroclaw (Poland) the national temperature standard for the low temperature range between the triple point of hydrogen 13,8033 K and the triple point of water 273,16 K was established in 2001. At the Laboratory a quality system has been implemented according to ISO/IEC 17025/2005. To achieve traceability between the national standard and secondary thermometers the Laboratory has carried out calibration of low-temperature thermometers. Recently the Laboratory improved its service for higher temperature up to about of 160 oC. Measuring systems and calibration capabilities of the Laboratory is presented in the paper.

Under suitable conditions on F, it is proved that the problem has at least two positive solutions if m ∈ (0,M), where M is the smallest positive root of the equation tan mπ = -tanh mπ, which takes the value 0.7528094 with an error of $±10^{-7}$.

Opis:: This work concerns the study of the controllability of some partial functional integrodifferential equation with nonlocal initial conditions in Banach spaces. It gives sufficient conditions that ensure the controllability of the system by supposing that its linear homogeneous part admits a resolvent operator in the sense of Grimmer, and by making use of the measure of noncompactness and the Mönch fixed-point theorem. As a result, we obtain a generalization of the work of Y.K. Chang, J.J. Nieto and W.S. Li (J. Optim. Theory Appl. 142, 267-273 (2009)), without assuming the compactness of the resolvent operator. An example of application is given for illustration.

Opis:: In this paper we generalize the class of admissible mappings as due by L. Górniewicz in 1976. Namely we define the notion of locally admissible mappings. Some properties and applications to the fixed point problem are presented.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to study the existence of solutions to a boundary value problem associated to a nonlinear fractional differential equation where the nonlinear term depends on a fractional derivative of lower order posed on the half-line. An appropriate compactness criterion and suitable Banach spaces are used and so a fixed point theorem is applied to obtain fixed points which are solutions of our problem.

Opis:: We consider the mixed problem for the quasilinear partial functional differential equation with unbounded delay $D_tz(t,x) = ∑_{i=1}^n f_i(t,x,z_{(t,x)})D_{x_i}z(t,x) + h(t,x,z_{(t,x)})$, where $z_{(t,x)} ∈ X̶_0$ is defined by $z_{(t,x)}(τ,s) = z(t+τ,x+s)$, $(τ,s) ∈ (-∞,0]×[0,r]$, and the phase space $X̶_0$ satisfies suitable axioms. Using the method of bicharacteristics and the fixed-point method we prove a theorem on the local existence and uniqueness of Carathéodory solutions of the mixed problem.

Opis:: We study an evolution problem which describes the quasistatic contact of a viscoelastic body with a foundation. We model the contact with normal damped response and a local friction law. We derive a variational formulation of the model and we establish the existence of a unique weak solution to the problem. The proof is based on monotone operators and fixed point arguments. We also establish the continuous dependence of the solution on the contact boundary conditions.

Moreover, as an application, we also exhibit some special cases of the system, which have been studied extensively in the literature.

Opis:: We study a controllability problem for a system governed by a semilinear functional differential inclusion in a Banach space in the presence of impulse effects and delay. Assuming a regularity of the multivalued non-linearity in terms of the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness we do not require the compactness of the evolution operator generated by the linear part of inclusion. We find existence results for mild solutions of this problem under various growth conditions on the nonlinear part and on the jump functions. As example, we consider the controllability of an impulsive system governed by a wave equation with delayed feedback.
