Opis:
This research offers a description and analysis of the relatively hidden practice of self-injury: cutting, burning, branding, and bone breaking. Drawing on over 150 in-depth interviews and tens of thousands of website postings, e-mail communications, and Internet groups, we challenge the psycho-medical depiction of this phenomenon and discuss ways that the contemporary sociological practice of self-injury has evolved to challenge images of the population, etiology, practice, and social meanings associated with this behavior. We conclude by suggesting that self-injury, for some, is in the process of undergoing a moral passage from the realm of medicalized to voluntarily chosen deviant behavior in which participants’ actions may be understood with a greater understanding of the sociological factors that contribute to the prevalence of these actions.

Opis:
Attending motorcycle rallies is an important component of social life for many touring motorcyclists. The significance of these events transcends the mere recreational experience of riding a motorcycle and spending time with other riders. This project is an examination of brand specific motorcycle rallies as a process and social world that has ritualistic features and activities that serve to bond members of the group, reinforce their identity, and distinguish members of this subculture from other motorcyclists and from the larger social world. Drawing on classical social theory and more contemporary research, a framework is established to discuss the activities and social organization of rallies. Objects from the material culture of those involved are examined as distinguishing components used to establish boundaries and confer membership. An in depth description of rally activities and interactions, enhances the understanding of these events.

The interpreter has the demanding task of “not creating a contradiction” by employing an identical concept in a different context. The classifications of the asylum applicant encounter the institutionally determined limits. Reliable verification of the applicant’s credibility is, however, dependent on knowledge of his/her local context and demands additional questioning. In this process, a denial of interlingual and intralingual complexity may be a source of invisible injustice (Spotti 2019:87-88). Both interpreting and interpretation is thus an inseparable part of the process in which police officers, decision-makers and judges, paraphrasing John L. Austin and John Searle, “do things with questions”. The author applies this interpretive framework to data from ethnographic research, which was conducted in Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2017-19, on interpreting for asylum applicants in the institutional settings. She elucidates the diversity of the standpoints - of refugees, court and ad hoc interpreters, representatives of the foreign police and of the migration office, as well as legal representatives from civic associations, referencing to relevant findings in linguistic and legal anthropology. In this article Helena Tužinská proposes that: (1) the discrepancies in the reports are conditioned by the context of interpreting, (2) participants “do things with questions”, and (3) inter-cultural interpretation can be a speech act.

The In-between Generation. Immigrants and the Problem of a Dual Sense of BelongingThe aim of this paper is an anthropological analysis of three individual biographies of Macedonian-speaking Muslims migrants in Italy. An author focuses on the generation called by her in-between generation. It means young people who migrated from Macedonia with their parents at the early age. They have studied or already completed their education in Italy, they speak Italian fluently and most of their friends are Italian. However, they are still speak Macedonian at home, visit their country of origin every year and are aware of their strong belonging to the Macedonian-speaking Muslim group. Therefore, they should constantly negotiate between traditional values of their parents, and their own patterns of life. The significant issues and tensions regard religious practices, daily habits like food and dress, and – that is most sensitive – gender relations.

Observing people working within organizational contexts through time creates epistemological issues, more so when doing it overtly, with top management’s official agreement. Power relations as well as hierarchical structures strongly influence the way people view the observer and interact with her in organizations. Those interactions also partly depend on his personal background – sex, age, professional position and so on. Following a reflexive approach, my objective is here to better grasp how top management’s agreement to the ethnographer’s entry on the field may influence both the way workers from differing hierarchical levels behave with her (and thus affect her observing conditions) and how he may analyse his ethnographic notes to develop scientific sociological results.

Drawing on careers spanning over 35 years in the field of ethnography, we reflect on the research in which we’ve engaged and how the practice and epistemology of ethnography has evolved over this period. We begin by addressing the problematic nature of ethical issues in conducting qualitative research, highlighting the non-uniform nature of standards, the difficulty of applying mainstream or medical criteria to field research, and the issues raised by the new area of cyber research, drawing particularly on our recent cyberethnography of self-injury. We then discuss the challenge of engagement, highlighting pulls that draw ethnographers between the ideals of involvement and objectivity. Finally, we address the challenges and changing landscapes of qualitative analysis, and how its practice and legitimation are impacted by contemporary trends in sociology. We conclude by discussing how epistemological decisions in the field of qualitative research are framed in political, ethical, and disciplinary struggles over disciplinary hegemony

The paper presents and analyses views of the scholar, ethnographer and founder of the so-called Łódź school of ethnography, Kazimiera Zawistowicz-Adamska (1897–1984) concerning the issues of cognitive difficulties they encountered – as well as some that are still experienced by folklore researchers. While perceiving a close relationship between folklore and folk artistic culture this scholar emphasized the extent of studies devoted to these issues in the global science and their popularity in non-scientific circles. Simultaneously, she presented an opinion that ethnographers should not be constrained to studies on so-called material culture that is always conditioned socially and always appears in the context of phenomena (fairly conventionally) of both, social and spiritual culture. Thus, the scholar’s standpoint functions as a kind of conciliation for op-posing standpoints – supporters of things, on the one hand, and defenders of symbols on the other.

How pluralism becomes hierarchical? Debating pluralism in contemporary PolandThis article discusses the multifaceted nature of religious pluralism. More specifically, it seeks to answer the question why, while advancing the claims of equality and diversity, the idea of pluralism reproduces inequalities and naturalizes hierarchies. In order to illuminate this problem, the article first presents a theoretical discussion and then refers it to the ethnographic evidence from a yearlong fieldwork in a multireligious locality in southeast Poland. It analyzes the impact of the discourse on “multiculturalism” on minorities’ plights and it exposes the processes in which religion, reconfigured as “culture” or “tradition,” is used as a discriminatory tool. By combining an exploration of a concrete ethnographic setting with an investigation of the broader implications of locally observed phenomena, it demonstrates the importance of anthropological perspective in the study of pluralism, or rather: the importance of a thorough dialogue between theory and ethnography. Dlaczego pluralizm hierarchizuje?

Most of the studies in the recent literature focus on the method used but not the philosophy behind it. This article focuses on doing ethnography, from within a constructivist paradigm, to explore individuals’ participation in virtual communities in Saudi Arabia. An aim of this article is to highlight how particular ethnographic techniques, viz unobtrusive observation and participation, were used in that study. The article argues that doing ethnography in this way allowed for placing the results within the social and cultural context of Saudi society. The article, which includes a sample of the findings from the two techniques involved for illustration, concludes that the one-year unobtrusive observation and the eight months’ participation in two different but similar virtual communities, during the period 2001-2002, have produced findings that are deep, meaningful and rich in description.

The focus of this article is on culture as a central concept of educational anthropology – a subdiscipline of anthropology that focuses on the fields of education and learning as key aspects of social life. It begins with an introduction into how culture has been criticially conceptualized in anthropology and ethnography and then illustrates how educational anthropologists have used the concepts of culture and cultural critique to analyze educational processes in diverse sociocultural settings. The author points out three primary areas in which anthropology of education enriches our understanding of education and learning: 1) investigations of diversity of educational practices in different sociocultural contexts; 2) critical examination of cultural practices and structures of inequality and exclusion vis-à-vis minority subjects in the educational process; 3) positioning of participatory research approaches and engagement as legitimate methodological and scholary standpoints. The article builts primarily on examples of texts that have been recently published in the Polish language in order to help situate the perspective of educational anthropology in Polish scholarly discourse and tradition.

Every discipline has its own special terms regarded to be the “difficult” ones. Very often these are part of the achievements of many generations of scholars, in the same time being components of colloquial language. Such an example for ethnology would be „folk culture”. The term is popularly understood as idealized pictures of Polish camp’s social life. For specialists, though, the term is very wide-ranging, multidimensional and set in a specific historical context. Still there is a ground for agrement and creation between academic research and popular understanding that involves activities taken by employees of cultural institutions. In their struggle to respond to a public demand, they face a dilemma of how folk culture should be widespread. On one hand, they see the presented topics to be appealing, they also recognize the possibilities lying in its educational values (craft’s demonstrations and workshops). On the other hand, they are aware of its artificialness and of their setting up meanings yet outdated. These dilemmas may as well be associated to the way ethnologists are educated in the field of regional cultures, where they are trained for potential ‘specialists’ of folk culture.

The phenomenon of new media has been a subject of ongoing discussions for a years. On the one hand, they are still reveal many doubts and concerns related to their interpretation and description. On the other hand – has become a pretext for extended reflection on contemporary culture and communication strategies. Particularly important in this context seem to be stories about the meanings of new media in everyday use. Indeed new media are involved in everyday practice and experience of their users.

Opis:
The article looks at language learner autonomy as a social construct in relation to the context and its user based on the example of Italki, a social networking site for tandem language learning. Considering the two foci – the context and the learner – the study is divided into two parts, both carried out from the perspective of online ethnography, each utilising different techniques and tools. Part 1, based on participatory observation and user experience of the author, was aimed at investigating the context of Italki as a language learning environment. Its affordances, noted in the course of the study, are analysed against the three aspects of social learner autonomy (Murray 2014): emotional, political, and spatial, in order to investigate the potential of Italki for interdependent learning. In Part 2 of the study, with its focus on the learner, the data were gathered by means of semi-structured open-ended interviews with Italki users (N=10). One of these interviews evolved into a case study, in which elements of social network analysis (SNA) were utilized to look at learner autonomy of an individual user. The results of the study indicate that learner autonomy in the digital age can be both self- and other-regulated; characterized by learner independence as well as interdependence. All this is very much promoted by new tendencies in language learning and affordances offered by the new media. At the same time, though, the nature of the autonomy exercised will, to a large extent, be determined by individual learner agendas, motives and attitudes.

Shaffir (1998:63) writes, “We must learn to reclaim the virtue of patience. When we enhance the pace of doing research, it is often at the expense of acquiring a deep appreciation of the research problem.” This paper engages Shaffir’s claim by examining the importance of undertaking a patient sociology. What is the virtue to be found in prolonged and sustained work? How does this speak to the relationships found in field research and in the identities that inform our work as researchers and theorists? In contrast to recent trends towards various versions of instant or short-term ethnography (e.g., Pink and Morgan 2013) this paper argues for the merits of “slow” ethnography by examining the advantages of relational patience, perspectival patience, and the patience required to fully appreciate omissions, rarities, and secrets of the group.

Opis:
Verein für kaschubische Volkskunde, which operated for several years prior to the outbreak of WW I, is one of the most interesting episodes in the organisation of scientific life in West Prussia. The eastern province of Germany was inhabited by Poles, Germans and Kashubians. Kashubians inhabited mainly the rural areas of the regency of Gdansk and belonged to the poorest social strata. Their dialect resembled the Polish language, while their folklore attracted the interest of ethnographers and linguists. In 1907 a Pole, a teacher and a social activist from Wdzydze – Izydor Gulgowski, also known as Ernts Seefried-Gulgowski (1874–1925), and a German linguist Dr Friedrich Lorentz (1870–1937) set up the Society whose members were Germans, Poles and a few Kashubians. Its aim was to integrate and intensify the research on the culture of Kashubia. The Society seated in Kartuzy started to issue their own scientific journal Mitteilungen des Vereins für kaschubische Volkskunde and it contributed to the preservation of the relics of folk culture. However, in the period of national tensions and the increase in political aspirations of Poles, the activity of the Society gave rise to many political controversies. According to some German circles, particularly the ones connected with Ostmarkenverein, the activity of the Society led to the strengthening of Polishness. Some Polish-Kashubian political activists such as Dr Aleksander Majkowski used the increase in the activity and awareness among Kashubians for their own political purposes creating the Society of Young Kashubians (1912). The scientific and ethnographic questions were only a tool to execute national objectives. The article presents the structure of the Society, the source of its financing, scientific achievements on the basis of archival sources (the State Archive in Gdansk), the press and journalism. The author analyses the reasons for different attitudes of its prominent members such as I. Gulgowski, a social activist influenced by the thinker Heinrich Sohnrey, the scientist Lorentz and the politician Aleksander Majkowski.

Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship, and Revolution (2017) is discussed here as a useful tool in the age of globalization for building recognition of the need to protect the lives of people other than our immediate kin, tribe, race, or nation. The paper argues that both the collaborative research behind the story and the formal experimentation stem from the authors’ sense of accountability to their informants. By telling a story about distant others who are given names and faces, Lissa’s authors encourage readers to develop empathy across borders.

The introduction of translation technologies, especially translation memory software, has had a significant impact on both the translator’s professional practice and the target text itself. Apart from the fact that he or she must translate in a non-linear fashion due to the design of translation memory systems, the translator is now called upon to increase output and, in many cases, recycle what has already been translated by others. As a result, the translator, used to having full control over his or her text, is in some regards losing control over the translation process, which brings him or her to reflect on the quality of the final product and, in turn, on the transformations the field of specialized translation is undergoing. In this paper, I will present the results of an important ethnographic study conducted in three Canadian translation environments. I will focus mostly on the effects translation technologies and newly implemented practices have had on the quality of specialized texts destined for the Canadian market, where most of the specialized texts produced in French are in fact translations. Special attention will be given to the comments made by specialized translators during semi-directed interviews.

In the Polish literature on the subject, prostitution is analyzed from various theoretical perspectives, but, first of all, from the perspective of social pathology. This approach makes the researchers focus mainly on the social maladjustment of women providing sex services and the reasons for their violation of the normative order. In my ethnographic research conducted in escort agencies in Poland, I was willing to go beyond this narrow outlook. I have adapted an interactionist perspective to analyze the escort agencies as organizations where intense interactions between employees, as well as employees and clients, take place, the sex work process is organized, and the meanings of prostitution are negotiated. I conducted the analysis according to the procedures of the grounded theory methodology. It allowed me to see and describe such processes as: (re)defining the situation of providing sex services from vice to work, sex work as a collective action, performing sex work, secondary socialization for sex work. The adaption of an interactionist perspective opens some new directions for analysis, which could help to understand the phenomenon of women getting involved in and continuing to provide sex services for a long time.

The results of the research show, that all three cultural codes, including the totalitarian and folwark ones are present in many different situations investigated during the research. At the same time Polish Montessori schools are undoubtedly these places in which the modernization code is overwhelmingly present.

They reflect the growth and diversity of the new media phenomena and platforms but also serve as a PR tool for making anthropology seem modern and up-to-date. Can we actually pronounce the new paradigm/turn within the anthropology/ethnography when transferring them online? I wonder whether the binary opposition between the real and the virtual in which anthropology seems to be caught brings epistemological benefits, what is the source of this digital dualism and finally why the digital- and cyber- prefixes do more harm that benefit anthropology.

Jews and social transformations in Polesie in the works of Józef ObrębskiThe article studies the place of Jews in the work of J. Obrębski about Polesie. They were an important part of his Polesie society triangle model. The model proved to be an effective instrument for the study of Polesie society but imposed noticeable restrictions on the author's understanding of the role of the Jews in Polesie. This functional analyses-based model helped Obrębski to show Jews as an extremely important mediatory element in the life of the Polesie society. But at the same time, it limited his understanding of the Jewish community mainly to this sole role. The article shows that the reason for this disbalance is not only the author's methods but also sources he used to get information about the Jewish life in the region.

This paper aims to contribute to knowledge of the factors which inform the grouping of creative workers in particular places. It is based on a case study of Aragón, a region of Spain, and draws on a period of nine months of ethnographic work among a particular group of creative workers. The main hypothesis is that there are visual components in the work environment that are stimulating for workers and there is a number of creative flows in these workspaces. I have selected one office that is occupied by two different groups of creative professionals: web designers and programmers. The research concludes that there is evidence that a shared set of cultural values, ideas about work organization, and a hybrid work-life balance are significant to the location choices of creative workers. The research is relevant as a contribution to knowledge about how creative places work.

As a result of the general growth in the interest in narratives different conception of what a story is and how to analyze has emerged. One especially interesting and methodological relevant difference is between the conception of narratives as textual objects and narratives as part of a storytelling event. The paper discusses the theoretical differences between these two analytical approaches to narratives. An example from my own research on Alzheimer’s patients telling stories illustrate the possibilities of using a performative and micro ethnographic approach to the study of storytelling in order to understand the functions of narratives – especially in relation to identity work. If stories not only are thought of as representations of events it becomes possible to view stories and story telling as social action: social states are both established, negotiated and changed through stories. This is especially important in the field of health and illness where diseases almost always are embedded in conversations and the telling of why and how symptoms were discovered or traumas received. For many patients and persons with especially communicative disabilities story telling is a challenge, but also an opportunity to actually master, maintain and often transform their identities.

In the last few years a number of studies have explored the epistemological uses of the ethnographer’s gender in sociological research and the effects of gender on research results. These studies aim either to analyze how ethnographers can use their “gender” to open up observational possibilities, or to analyze observations made while maintaining as much control as possible over the conditions of their sociological interpretation. But relatively few papers discuss using ethnography to study gendered social relations. This article applies that approach to the observations made in our field study of the “world” of French jazz. We present here three of the main ways that the epistemological enrichment offered by ethnography may in turn enrich analysis of gender relations: access to “invisible” practices, analysis in terms of “the arrangement between the sexes", the possibility of generalization.

The starting point of this article is the relationship of art and science from the perspective of epistemological and ontological insights of philosophers of science and researchers of contemporary art. Further on, the author presents the specificity of the interaction of art and pedagogy, in which the complex subject of the latter opens the field to various sources, styles and languages of knowing and understanding of the world and the human being (including the language of the arts). Seeing art as an important exploration tool for the analysis of education in qualitative pedagogical research, the author summarizes the assumptions of visual ethnography – a research method that, as she explains, oscillates between art and science (with its methodological appeal to the image as the primary medium of the art). In the conclusion, she indicates cognitive and practical benefits which may result from using the concepts that derive from the arts as a source of knowledge about the educational reality.

Our view of organizations, labour and the competencies of managers will soon need to change. In the postmodern and post-Fordist world, economy and organizations function differently than they did in the 20th century. Workers and managers will have to face new expectations. Not only has reflectivity become one of the key organisational factors; it is also taught, learnt and shaped. Drawing on an authoethnographic model and action-research, authors of this paper provide an education and development tool that managers and workers can use to develop and trigger reflectivity. Picture ethnography, coaching philosophy and hermeneutics are theoretical bases for the construction of a new model of self-development.

W świecie ponowoczesności i postfordyzmu gospodarka i organizacje funkcjonują w odmienny sposób niż w XX wieku. Opis:
A basic feature of professions is specialized competence. Indeed, expertise grants professions and their members privileged, prestigious, and protected statuses. Members of professions thus face interactional pressure to appear competent in encounters with colleagues, clients, and lay publics, demonstrating that they, indeed, have the particular competencies expected of and associated with their position. For example, in a classic study of professionalization, Jack Haas and William Shaffir examine how medical students adopt a cloak of competence—presenting more-than-fully-able selves—in their training and work to convince gatekeepers, each other, and patients that they have the ability to do medicine. Similar competence-enhancing presentations are evident in other professions. However, a related dramaturgical phenomenon remains neglected: adopting a cloak of incompetence—presenting less-than-fully-able selves—in performing the professional role. Using the ethnographer’s work as an illustrative case, the following paper examines this other side of managing professional competence.

My central point is that not only has the title of the periodical in which the text appeared been determined incorrectly, but also the authorship has been erroneously attributed to Bystroń. I demonstrate how both of these mistakes came into being, and call attention to two factors which have determined the perpetuation of these false beliefs. Przedstawiam, w jaki sposób doszło do obu błędów.

In this article, I am discussing common themes of ethnographic andpedagogical research, looking at approaches that are some kind of interdisciplinaryhybrid that goes beyond one or the other scientific discipline, and formed in theUnited States and in the United Kingdom last century. I pay particular attention tothe research tradition of the emergence and institutionalization of educational anthropology,a sub-discipline of American cultural anthropology from the mid-1950swhose educational ethnography is an important field element. I point to the distinctionbetween educational ethnography and the ethnography of education, focusingon the conclusions of the argument on the characteristics of two opposing ways ofdefining the broader concept, namely the term "ethnography" in scientific discourse– i.e., inclusive and exclusive definitions.

This paper provides a sociologists’ reflection of a sociologist on qualitative field research. Reflections will include some methodological and epistemological considerations that are connected with field work, while building the realness of the description and conclusions, i.e. constructing the quality of qualitative research. The intellectual process of doing research will be characterized by analysis of: description of investigated reality (tales of the field), analytical process, usage of commonsense research procedures (so called triangulation procedures), which are used in the field by the researcher and during analysis or writing a research report to adequately “re – present” researched reality. The three above mentioned stages of representation of reality are interwoven to create one complex intellectual process, which is called “field research”. The quality of qualitative research is the intellectual process where some procedures are used to create the accountability of research conclusions.

The aim of this text is to depict the evolution of change in representations of labor and value in a neoliberal society. This evolution is shown through ethnographical studies of small companies in the Upper Silesia as well as the work performed in such companies. The study argues that due to the influence of neoliberał ideology, the social functioning of labor and value has evolved from the class paradigm in the industrial society to a discontinuous structure of the set in the contemporary society. Labor has also changed its measurable representative features. For example, labor is no longer perceived through the lens of worktime or effort, but rather through the lens of value. The text constitutes an analysis of the changes in the labor and value structure and how this structure is perceived in a neoliberal society.

The text, which is part of the new field of social sciences – Donbas Studies, presents partial results of the research carried out in the city of Severodonetsk, which is located in the Lugansk Oblast in Donbas. The author, using the ethnographic method of field research, was looking for an answer to the question of how the process of decommunization in Donbas proceeded, and in particular, how the sense of removing the symbols of communism was negotiated, what aspects of this process turned out to be socially conflicting, and what role young people played in this process? Using the interpretation of metaphors and etymologies, the author states that de-communization in Ukraine, apart from the official imperative of oblivion, brings an element of revenge with it. Thanks to participation in the discussion on the de-communization of young people, it is possible to notice that its field of meaning has been extended to include aspects relating not only to the assessment of the past, but also the current social situation in Ukraine. Thanks to this, de-communization does not only mean an order to forget, but also to remember.

The article explores the connections between social, political, economic and ethnic processes in the Ukrainian-Romanian borderland. The aim is to describe how borderlanders work out strategies to overcome the contradictions inherent in the state border. The study is based on ethnographical fieldwork (participant and non-participant observation) conducted in a small town, a former mining centre, in the region of Transcarpathia in Western Ukraine. I point to the political changes in the late 20th and early 21st centuries (the collapse of the Soviet bloc and Ukraine neighbours’ integration in the European Union) and their impact on local social life. The crucial aspect, linked to the town’s geographical setting, is the role of the state border, which changes in accordance with the political changes in the region and in Europe. First, the collapse of the communist dictatorships in Ukraine and Romania resulted in the opening of the border and an increase in cross-border contacts. However, in the first decade of the 21st century, Romania tightened its passport and visa regulations for Ukrainian citizens. Another factor is the complete disintegration of the mining industry and local labour market, resulting in significant changes in occupational patterns and a greater role of the border in respect of labour migration and shuttle trade. I also acknowledge local ethnic composition and argue that the use of ethno-national symbolism, languages, relations between ethnic minorities and their ‘external homelands’ constitute an inherent element of the strategies to overcome the lack of regular employment and poverty.

The rock art has particular position in anthropological and archaeological studies. Analysis of these motifs plays a significant role in understanding culture, beliefs, social relations and other aspects of daily life. Creation of petroglyphs has a long history in Iran and are widespread in most parts of the country. The area of study in this essay is Beyram plain which is located in Larestan city in the southern part of Fars province. During archaeological systematic survey in this area, some petroglyphs with various animal motifs were detected and recorded, that can be considered as a part of art and memorials of residents in this settlements. The relative chronology of these motifs is based on analogy and comparative studies with obtained samples from adjacent areas. This research has been performed through both field study and library method. It used the descriptive-analytical methods in order to present, describe, design and compare the newly discovered petroglyphs at Beyram plain. In order to have a detailed analysis of the motifs, ethnographic studies and talking with shepherds and natives were done. And based on these studies, a possible function will be suggested for these kinds of motifs.

In this short article inspired by Korczak’s life and works I want to present my opinions and views as a teacher and a tutor, working with today’s youngsters. Can Korczak’s thoughts truly inspire today’s generation of teachers? Is there a chance to apply them in today’s school? All my thoughts and reflections are both from participant’s and observer’s point of view. In this paper I will refer to selection of Korczak’s works (such as his getto diary) and their academic interpretations. I will discuss issues of children’s democracy reflected in educational practice, utilize children’s rights perspective looking into processual understanding of oneself as an educator and as a human being, before trying to find deeper understanding of a child or a youth. I will tie Korczak’s ideas with my personal experiences, stressing out their potentiality for a more sensitive and empathetic school environment, where youths of today are already the adults of tomorrow, living here and now.

The text concerns the author’s project “Ethnography as a personal experience. Generational transformations in methodology and research practices”. It reveals a problematic, and partly unstable character of the strategy of constructing the identity of an anthropologist professional group. In the author’s opinion a Polish young anthropologist shows a disruption of knowledge transmission between generations as well as a discontinuity in the Polish ethnology tradition. As a result, there is a tendency in not only borrowing the theory and authority from the tradition of foreign national anthropologies, but also an uncritical transfer of discursive forms, authorizing national anthropology. In his opinion it is the most important question about contemporary shape of national anthropologies, especially Polish ethnology.

The text is dedicated to the reflections on the author’s own ethnographic field research in the rural areas of the Republic of Macedonia, which has been carried out since 2011 to specify the strategies which local inhabitants develop to manage their everyday reality and practices. The author discusses the factors which influence an ethnographic field research and presents the reflexivity and awareness of the research process. She also focuses on researcher’s personality and individual features, on how the locals accept a stranger in their private space. The several key moments are underlined like coming to the field and its impact on the further activity through the reflection if the field which precedes next steps, gaining the confidence and respect, difficulties that the researcher faces in communication etc. All these moments (and many others) should be considered as an inevitable part of the work.

With this article I seek to build bridges between the different narrative elements where the body is situated as a central language, of experiences as a researcher in socio-cultural contexts of Bolivian indigenous peoples in the years 1984 and 1998. In this biographical period I have lived different reflective processes, frustrations, and successes that can contribute to an understanding of the framework of gender, ethnic, and political relations. This text, auto-ethnographic, enables us to see the deconstruction and subjective transformations in an androcentric context of a traditional Andean culture, as well as the investigative awareness achieved during interactions in the field. In my field work I have used tools from different disciplines (anthropology, sociology, social psychology), that are useful for validating the autoethnography as a methodological model to the gender autonomy, listening and learning the different ways of understanding corporal discourses. That is, I wish to recognize the value of various types of production and interpretation of knowledge, such as narration, arts, literature, film, and photography that favors emancipation of the peoples and their inhabitants.

The starting point of reflections presented in this paper is the talk which took place during my fieldwork on the cultural role of public libraries in Podhale region in February 2016. The subject of the conversation was the book ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ by E. L. James, read by one of the interlocutors. Describing its course and atmosphere I try to set it in three contexts: discursive, performative and institutional. By analogy to them, acts and narratives of reading appear as: cultural translation from Anglo-Saxon to Goral style, active experimentation with local cultural constructs and results of specifically shaped concept of readership animation through a library. The peculiar atmosphere of this institution as a place made in great measure by women and for women, remains influential as well. Such interpretation became possible by comparing the analyzed situation with the rest of research material, gathered with in-depth interviews and participant observation, as well as using the perspective of ‘reading as an action’, proposed by American pioneers of the anthropology of reading (Janice Radway, Elizabeth Long). The observation builds an image of public library as a place embedded in local systems of meaning, but on the other hand, favorable to socio-cultural innovations.

To investigate the health benefits of companion animals in a way that goes beyond finding statistical patterns involves appreciating the philosophical debates about the nature of animal consciousness that engage an inter-disciplinary field of scholarship cutting across the Great Divide of the hard sciences and humanities. It also requires developing a methodology to conduct empirical research which is often viewed as of secondary importance by researchers wishing to make a philosophical case about human beings and modernity. This paper considers the achievements of qualitative sociologists, particularly in the field of post-Meadian symbolic interactionism who have addressed these issues, and discusses ways of extending and deepening this agenda through crossfertilization with similar work in ethnomethodology, conversation analysis and post-humanist sociology in investigating the health benefits of dogs.

This paper tells the story of two women—a veterinarian and a folk healer—to foster political, environmental, and social conditions in which pastoralists based in the central Indian state of Maharashtra could thrive. For them, this practice of fostering necessarily meant tending to human and nonhuman animals together. The women I followed called this interspeciated practice, One Health. To be sure, they borrowed this term from more economically-dominant and politically-normative international development organizations. When wielded by these institutions, One Health has designated a model for preventing emerging zoonotic diseases, and the pandemics they often cause, through the surveillance of marginal livestock rearing communities, often in the Global South. My interlocutors’ projects intersected with One Health—and thus were available for funding from it—insofar as the central conceit of One Health was that human and nonhuman animals can share illness. Yet the politics and ethics of the two were very different. I make this case by ethnographically tracking different modalities of seeing that characterize One Health and its vernaculars. Sight, I argue, operates as a perceptual orientation that initiates a “becoming-with” the world for my interlocutors versus a tool to control it (Dave, 2012). How, I therefore ask, might different ways of apprehending the bonds of human and nonhuman beings reveal how we might yet learn to dwell differently on an exhausted planet?

The article promotes the argument that anthropological or ethnological knowledge is primarily produced through ethnographies that present fieldwork experience. As publications that appear after returning home, they provide the social sciences with the most recent information about the present reality. Moreover, that is where we can find new methodological approaches and new theoretical concepts. Our contemporary experience in such a fast-changing world shows the uselessness of the formerly applied analytical notions, forcing us to search for a new form of description and new interpretative categories. The article is actually a survey of the best known fieldwork monographs presented through theories, schools and trends in cultural and social anthropology that have been constituted or overcome by these very monographs, which are milestones in over a century of ethnological/anthropological research. As the last ones are from the 21st century, they present not only the newest research results, but also the most up-to-date methodologies.

Opis:
Whereas the emergence of pyramid schemes exerted considerable impacts on people’s lives, up to now, far too little attention has been paid to the experiences of members from the sociological perspective, particularly in non-Western contexts. Therefore, this study illuminates social processes underlying participation in such schemes in a less studied social setting, Iran. This article also critically traces the social and psychological consequences of membership in pyramid schemes. We adapted a critical ethnographic approach, including participant observation of local branch offices, followed by 16 in-depth interviews with the former members of schemes. Our findings suggest that the practices deployed by the schemes lead to the building of social identity, namely, “superhuman,” mainly based on the misinterpretation of the real world. Finding the reality surrounded deliberately contrasted with the firms’ promises, the constructed identity fails, and members lose their social capital.

This article aimed to suggest implications of learner-centered culture education through observation, participant observation, interviewing or ethnoscience in particular. Korean Arabic language learners were asked to watch two episodes of an Arab soap opera and compare and contrast their own culture from Arab culture based on what they had watched. Results of this study showed a desir- able direction, from insiders’ perspectives, for culture education utilizing the methodology of ethnography of communication. In order to establish Korean learners’ cultural identities as well as to equip them with cross-cultural compe- tence through which they can appropriately, accurately behave depending on situational context, this methodology of ethnography of communication into Arab culture educational practice should be made in the future.

Wioska należała do wielu rodów magnackich – Potockich, Branickich, a nawet do króla Jana III Sobieskiego.
The purpose of this article is to present the history of the former village of Wolica, located at the Warsaw Escarpment. Wolica was firstly mentioned in 15th century. The village was the property of many noble families like the Potocki, the Branicki and even to King Jan III Sobieski. For over 500 years Wolica did not stand out at all. Surprisingly, it began to make its mark in the 20th century, when it was incorporated to the capital. Despite the progressing urbanisation of Warsaw, it retained its rural character. The author, an ethnology student, focuses on the spatial changes in Wolica. To prove her point, she cites some of interviews with the locals, which were conducted during her field research in Wolica, that continues.

Opis:
In this paper, we reflect upon our experiences taking a graduate qualitative methodology course with Dr. William (Billy) Shaffir. We highlight Billy’s approach to ethnographic research and his declaration to “just do it.” Rather than just absorbing theoretical knowledge from the literature, Billy taught us to be wary of the dangers of a prior theorization and how it can distort rather than shed light on empirical investigations. Despite his belief that sociological theory is far too often abstract and removed from real-world contexts, he nevertheless provided us with a latent theoretical commitment to concept formation, modification, and testing in the field that guides our research to this day. We explore Shaffir’s agnostic and at times ironic approach to theory and demonstrate how his specific type of theory-work, derived from Everett Hughes’ and Howard Becker’s interactionist perspective on “people doing things together,” influenced how many of his students study occupations and organizations via sensitizing concepts. Billy managed to get us to think differently about how we theorize in the field and how to cultivate a playful and healthy skeptical attitude towards its application. This type of agnostic-interactionism does not dismiss theory outright, but is always vigilant and mindful of how easy it is for practitioners of theory to slip into obfuscation and reification. We conclude with a Shaffir inspired theory-work that argues for the continuing significance of an agnostic stance towards ethnographic and qualitative inquiry; one that continues to sensitize the researcher to generic social processes through which agency-structure is mediated and accomplished.

Opierając się na książce Black Men Can’t Shoot (Czarni nie umieją rzucać) Scotta N. Brooksa, wydanej w roku 2008 roku etnograficznej analizie akademickich drużyn koszykarskich w Filadelfii, autorka artykułu zestawia ze sobą koncepcje pracy i talentu jako źródła sportowego sukcesu uznawane zazwyczaj za niewspółmierne. Autor komentowanej przez nią książki dekonstruuje mit wrodzonego i zależnego m.in. od rasy talentu predysponującego do uprawiania jakiejś dyscypliny (tu: koszykówki) i dochodzi do wniosku, że nawet na poziomie amatorskim sukces zależy raczej od sposobu alokacji cielesnych zasobów – zarządzania siłami zawodnika, możliwości nawiązywania biznesowych kontaktów itp. – niż od umiejętności, finezji czy stylu gry.
This essay considers the competing ideologies of hard work and natural talent when talking about sporting greatness. Dispelling the myth of the “racial gift” is one of the aims of Scott N. Brooks’s 2008 ethnography, Black Men Can’t Shoot, a study of Philadelphia high school basketball that suggests athletic mobility has more to do with mentoring and networking than skill, aesthetics or self-expression.

While offline iterations of the climate activism movement have spanned decades, today online involvement of youth through social media platforms has transformed the landscape of this social movement. Our research considers how youth climate activists utilize social media platforms to create and direct social movement communities towards greater collective action. Our project analyzes narrative framing and linguistic conventions to better understand how youth climate activists utilized Twitter to build community and mobilize followers around their movement. Our project identifies three emergent strategies, used by youth climate activists, that appear effective in engaging activist communities on Twitter. These strategies demonstrate the power of digital culture, and youth culture, in creating a collective identity within a diverse generation. This fusion of digital and physical resistance is an essential component of the youth climate activist strategy and may play a role in the future of emerging social movements.

In this study, I investigated how different forms of human capital and social capital of new Chinese immigrants affect their job-search and job transitions in the Flushing area. I conducted sixteen indepth interviews with new Chinese immigrants who were seeking job opportunities within Flushing, documenting not only their personal background but also their immigration and working experiences in both China and the United States. Results indicate that the aggregation of certain human capital has positive influence on immigrants’ income, rather on immigrants’ job-findings and job transitions. The efficiency of social ties, instead of strength of social ties, is a more significant unit of analysis in the co-ethnic labor market. Though immigrants’ efficient social ties may be helpful for finding their first jobs in the U.S., the efficiency of social ties with regards to job-searching may dramatically decrease as immigrants stay longer in the U.S. As a result, social ties may not have a salient influence on immigrants’ job transitions.

The starting point of the re ections are the categories of a non-place and mobility, which in practice appear to less obvious and one-dimensional in the context of trans-local and cross-border activities of tractor unit drivers. It is the stillness a phenomenon that reveals the regimes of distribution and transport logistics.

The main part of the archive consists of visuals, mostly photographs made by Reinfuss himself during his various ethnographic research as well as other visual materials collected by Professor. The visuality of the Reinfuss’s private archive is discussed in the context of broader ethnographic experiences and anthropological discourses. In particular, the author problematizes sensorial dimension of ethnography, relationship between ethnography and photography, Reinfuss’s attitude toward traditional folk culture which is revealed in his usage of photography. There is a focus on correlations between “private” and “public” photography and on the structure of visual experience based on photography.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to elaborate on the reasons behind feeling the emotion of pride within the professional context of actions undertaken by contemporary Polish teachers. The article attempts to answer the question of what role pride plays in teachers’ career building process and their daily work. All considerations focus on the social construction of the meaning of pride, established from teachers’ perspectives. Pride is here referred to as social emotion, in line with an interpretivist approach. The following reflections are based on the data collected due to: 1) multiple observations conducted by the author in the years 2008-2016 in the primary, as well as junior high schools; 2) interviews with teachers, parents, and other school staff. Pride in teachers’ work arises in three main contexts: 1) pride due to prestige, 2) pride due to one’s recognition (appreciation), and 3) pride as a result of diverse interactions, for example, teacher-student. The emotion at hand is, like shame, of a social origin and plays a key role when it comes to interactions, social control, as well as maintaining social order. And yet, most of the researchers would give the lead to emotions such as shame, guilt, or related stigma. Based on the collected data, this article focuses on the emotion of pride in the process of identity building by employees—teachers.

Opis:
Negotiating politically sensitive research environments requires both a careful consideration of the methods involved and a great deal of personal resolve. In drawing upon two distinct yet comparable fieldwork experiences, this paper champions the benefits of ethnographic methods in seeking to gain positionality and research legitimacy among those identified as future research participants. The authors explore and discuss their use of the ethnographic concept of “hanging out” in politically sensitive environments when seeking to negotiate access to potentially hard to reach participants living in challenging research environments. Through an illustrative examination of their experiences in researching commemorative rituals in Palestine and mental health in a Northern Irish prison, both authors reflect upon their use of “hanging out” when seeking to break down barriers and gain acceptance among their target research participants. Their involvement in a range of activities, not directly related to the overall aims of the research project, highlights a need for qualitative researchers to adopt a flexible research design, one that embraces serendipitous or chance encounters, when seeking to gain access to hard to reach research participants or when issues of researcher legitimacy are particularly pronounced, such as is the case in politically sensitive research environments.

The increasing popularity of programs promoting aktywność (activity) in old age in contemporary Poland is part of regional and global attempts to encourage health and economic productivity in old age. In order to understand this interest in aktywność in old age, such practices must be seen within broader sociocultural and political-economic contexts. This drive for aktywność cannot be fully explained without understanding its status as an unquestioned moral good in opposition to illness, disability, and frailty in old age. Seeking commonalities across such seemingly opposite experiences can reduce marginalization in old age. Side-stepping binary constructions of health and illness in old age creates a more holistic perspective that demonstrates how older Poles in a range of contexts create moral lives.
Rosnąca w Polsce popularność i szerzenie się programów promujących aktywną starość stanowi część lokalnych i globalnych działań na rzecz utrzymania zdrowia i produktywności ekonomicznej starszych osób. Aby lepiej zrozumieć zainteresowanie aktywnością w starszym wieku, należy rozpatrywać te praktyki w szerszym społeczno-kulturowym i polityczno-ekonomicznym kontekście.

Dying is one of the basic existential experiences which, at the most fundamental level, both connects and separates humans from the rest of animate nature. What they have in common is the biological dimension, while divisions occur at the cultural level. Within Western culture, based on the Christian religion, the death of an animal, seen as a soul-less being, is deprived of the sacred dimension and perceived as a biological act of cessation of all vital functions. This belief is contrasted with the perspective of companion animal caretakers, for whom the individual experience of going through the process of dying and the death of their pet can be a traumatic experience, comparable to the experience of the death of a human loved one. In this article, I consider the following: caretakers’ reactions to the loss, the specificity of the bond that affects grief, analogies between mourning after the death of a human and a pet, the role of ritual in the mourning process, strategies and ways of reorganizing the relationship with the deceased pet, and social attitudes faced by the caretakers in response to their grief, with particular emphasis on the phenomenon of disenfranchised grief. The text is based on ethnographic qualitative research focused on the caretakers’ experiences related to the disease and death of companion animals.

The book by Tomasz Chyrzyński (entitled: Language and the Internet. Formal, Semantic and Functional-Pragmatic Properties of English and Polish in Internet Communication—written in Polish) undertakes the issue of electronic communication and the ways in which language evolves in connection with the processes which are best demonstrated on the Internet. There are five chapters, first two of which deal with the role of the Internet nowadays and research directions in Internet linguistics, respectively. Chapter 3 focuses on phonetic, grammatical, lexical and syntactic properties of English and Polish in electronic communication, noting the similarities, differences in the languages and changes in the linguistic behaviors of the participants. Chapter 4 describes the process of creating pseudonyms and nicknames on Internet forums, portals and chats, treating them as the expression of users’ creativity and noting the diversity in them. Chapter 5 undertakes the analysis of lexical and stylistic properties of a microblog, called Blip, adopting the perspective of the ethnography of communication for this purpose. A criticism of the approach in the book is presented focusing on several aspects, which are not utilized in the book in a way that has been projected. The critical view in particular concerns the insufficient application of the ethnographic model proposed in the book.

In contrast to those who more characteristically approach emotion as an individual realm of experience of more distinctive physiological and/or psychological sorts, this paper addresses emotionality as a socially experienced, linguistically enabled, activity-based process. While conceptually and methodologically situated within contemporary symbolic interactionist thought (Mead 1934; Blumer 1969; Strauss 1993; Prus 1996; 1997; 1999; Prus and Grills 2003), this statement is centrally informed by the pragmatist considerations of emotionality that Aristotle (circa 384-322 BCE) develops in Rhetoric. Although barely known to those in the human sciences, Aristotle’s Rhetoric provides a great deal of insight into people’s definitions of, and experiences with, a wide array of emotions. Addressing matters of persuasive interchange in political, judicial, and evaluative contexts, Aristotle gives particular attention to the intensification and neutralization of people’s emotional states. This includes (1) anger and calm, (2) friendship and enmity, (3) fear and confidence, (4) shame and shamelessness, (5) kindness and inconsideration, (6) pity and indignation, and (7) envy and emulation. Following an introduction to “rhetoric” (as the study of persuasive interchange) and “emotionality,” this paper briefly (1) outlines a pragmatist/interactionist approach to the study of emotionality, (2) considers Aristotle as a sociological pragmatist, (3) locates Aristotle’s work within the context of classical Greek thought, (4) acknowledges the relationship of emotionality and morality, and (5) addresses emotionality as a generic social process. Following (6) a more sustained consideration of emotionality within the context of Aristotle’s Rhetoric, the paper concludes with (7) a short discussion of the importance of Aristotle’s work for studying emotionality as a realm of human lived experience on a contemporary plane.

Opis:
The article considers the problem of researcher’s embodiment in the process of data gathering and analysis in an ethnographic study on social world of climbing. In author’s opinion, presented reflections go beyond described case and remain applicable to every ethnographic research interested in embodied experiences of human beings, especially these in which the main research topic is physical, e.g., sport activity, bodywork, and work with the body. The author analyses relations between embodiment of particular actions taken by the researched subjects and embodiment of the research process. She raises the problem of transition between the researcher’s identity and the social world participant’s identity – searching for the possibility of using autoethnography in the process of data gathering and analyzing. Finally, she presents three aspects of the body/embodiment in the ethnographic research, referring them to the studied subjects (climbers) and to the researcher: (a) the body as an agent, (b) the embodied experience, (c) the body as a subject of theorizing and reflections. The author emphasizes the embodied nature of research process – especially in the ethnographic studies – and suggests taking into consideration the embodiment of the researcher and the role of the body in the process of knowledge production.

Opis:
The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the extent, range, and nature of the use of institutional ethnography (IE) as a method of inquiry in peer-reviewed journal publications. Fifteen databases were searched between the years of 2003 and 2013. Relevant data were extracted from 179 included articles. Findings relate to nine key areas including year of publication, authorship and geography, types of journals, format of resources, authors’ descriptions of how they used IE, approaches used in conjunction with IE, data collection methods, standpoint, and institutional relations. Institutional ethnography was diversely conceptualized as: a (sociological) method of inquiry, methodology, research approach, feminist sociology, theory and methodology, framework, lens, field, perspective, and form of analysis. Inevitably, authors applied IE differently across their research and writing, ranging from direct usage or close adherence to IE in a comprehensive manner; to indirect usage or loose adherence to IE by drawing on it as inspiration, guidance, or influence; or borrowing from a certain facet of IE such as a particular theory, concept, method, tool, or analytic strategy. Additionally, some authors adapted IE to suit a specific purpose, which entailed using modified versions of IE to fit a given context or objective, while others strived to extend existing understandings of IE through critique, explanation, review, elaboration, or reflection. The results from this study are useful to both beginning and experienced institutional ethnographers, as the insights gained provide clarity about the use of IE, identify trends in its application, and raise additional questions.

Opis:

Badania jakościowe prowadzą do wyjaśnień jednostkowych i ugruntowanych w określonym kontekście. Kwestia kontekstu danych nabiera szczególnie ważnego znaczenia i jest obecna na każdym etapie procesu badawczego. W niniejszym tekście dokonuję analizy obecności kontekstu, odnosząc się do definicji językowych. Podaję przykłady z przeprowadzonych badań etnograficznych w gimnazjum.
The research process is connected with reflection on the correctness of the conclusions. In qualitative research, which does not use such formalized procedures to assess validity and reliability as quantitative research does, there is a space for discussion about other conditions, on the basis of which to judge the correctness. Qualitative research leads to individual explanations and is grounded in a specific context. The issue of the data context acquires a particularly important meaning and is present at every stage of the research process. This text analyzes the presence of context, referring to language definitions, with examples from ethnographic research conducted in the gymnasium.

Opis:
The use of audiovisual recording devices is changing the practice of qualitative research. Extensive corpus of data can be generated in (shortterm) focussed fieldwork. Nevertheless, methods to analyse video data are still in an experimental stage. This article explores the benefits and limitations of applying sociolinguistic genre analysis to audio-visual data. This is illustrated with a case study, based on the videotaped »deep-trance vision« of a New Religious Movement’s spiritual leader, which is one the most famous contemporary religious visionaries in Germany. The analysis aims to reconstruct the construction of this religious experience of transcendence from the perspective of its followers. We will examine three different levels of communication (a) the inner context, exploring the textual, gestural, mimical and prosodic aspects, (b) the intermediate level where the focus lies on the setting and decorum, and finally (c) the outer context, focussing on the social embedding of this form of »transcendent« communication and its filmic presentation. The article closes with a reflection on the need to combine hermeneutic analysis of case studies based on textual analysis with ethnographic field data and observation to contextualise its interpretation.

Economic activities are one important but understudied mechanism which kids use to recreate inequality within their peer cultures. Drawing on ethnographic data from a middle school summer camp, we used Goffman’s typology of economic arrangements to analyze sequences of economic interactions within an underground economy. The middle school students drew on coercion, trading and sharing in order to address their own interests and concerns. When negotiating friendships, girls sometimes engaged in a series of interactions which converted previous social exchanges into unfulfilled economic exchanges. Girls also used inappropriate social exchanges to successfully resist boys’ private coercion efforts, prompting boys to switch tactics and propose appropriate social exchanges and economic exchanges. Not only were these economic interactions patterned along gender, race, and class lines, but the repetitive, routine nature of these interactions helped to recreate inequality within the peer culture.

Opis:
I would like to present the possibility of broadening the traditional methodological and technical skills of researcher and analyst, but also the intellectual capacity of the researcher associated with combining data, categorizing, linking categories, as well as the interpretation of the causes and consequences of the emergence of certain social phenomena. Some methodologies, methods, and research techniques are more conducive to creative conceptual and interpretive solutions. Therefore, I describe the serendipity phenomenon in such methodologies as grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenological research, and contemplative inquiry. The problem of intuition in qualitative research will be also described in the paper. There will be presented also some suggestions how to be creative in qualitative research. From the review of issues of creativity in qualitative research we can derive the following conclusions: Creativity in qualitative research depends on the strength of a priori conceptualization and stiffness of the adapted methods of research and analysis. If the methodology is more flexible (as the methodology of grounded theory), the researcher can get to phenomena that he/she has not realized and which are still scantily explored in his/her field of expertise. The phenomenological and contemplative approaches allow the use of the investigator’s feelings and experience as they appear in the studied phenomena, which usually does not take place in objectifying and positivistic research. The investigator may therefore consciously use these methodologies and approaches that foster creativity. The researchers can improve their skills in thinking and creative action by doing some methodical exercises (journal writing, writing poetry as a summary of the collected data, the use of art as representation of the phenomenon, the use of meditation, observation of the body feelings, humor, etc.).

The genre of travel writing is not only informed by an interdisciplinary aesthetic but also involves the description of peoples and the translation/re-presentation/re-interpretation of cultures. This article provides important clues as to how ethnography can be made to function as a legitimate mode of cultural and literary criticism. In doing so, this article seeks to establish that just as the ethnographer’s systematic study of the Other entails the possibility of gaining knowledge about the self, the travel writer’s knowledge of the Other, too, can often lead to a veritable gain in consciousness. Representation of the past or of history so to speak, as well as of the present which springs from that history, form a major preoccupation in Naipaul’s travel writing. To construct the present which, as a temporal category, is fairly problematic insofar as it is ephemeral and ever-fleeting and cannot be described without referring to what was or has been, one must begin with what one believes to be an understanding of the past – of history, per se. This study demonstrates how intensely emotional encounters with pastness inform the ways in which history is developed and narrativized within the discursive field of travel writing.

In that domain, Design Science Research (DSR) is discussed as being very useful and adopted in this paper for knowledge management. The author applied the ArchiMate modelling language and supplemented it with the process approach and Business Process Model & Notation (BPMN) for knowledge management process presentation, as well as by the case management approach and Case Management Model & Notation (CMMN). These notations are consistent and complementary, although they have different objectives of usage.

I reflect upon Dr. William Shaffir’s influence on my approach to ethnographic research and my study of homeless shelter workers. Dr. Shaffir introduced me to his own brand of the craft of qualitative field work, but also introduced me to important sociologists and ideas in the symbolic interactionist tradition. Most central was Everett C. Hughes’ notion of “dirty work,” which helped shape my research focus. Building from Hughes’ concept, but expanding it with Shaffir and Pawluch’s (2003) social constructionist approach to occupations, I was better able to conceptualize the process of how workers themselves piece together the meaning of “dirty work.” Beyond gaining these conceptual insights, I also reflect on Dr. Shaffir’s teaching philosophy of qualitative methods, that is, the importance of learning by doing. I conclude with some thoughts regarding Shaffir’s perspective on the wider ethnographic task of describing, in situ, members’ understandings and definitions. Following Everett Hughes, I call on interactionists to give more attention to “dirty work” as a generic and transcontextual process.

This proposal focuses on the multifaceted interplay between video games, connectiveness, and online communities in a time of emergency; COVID-19 has presented challenges for teenagers, forcing them to re-mediate their interactions with peers. Digital entertainment has been frequently accused to be a bearer of negative attitudes and anti-social behaviors, but there is also relevant evidence about how video games can foster bonding and inclusion. Nevertheless, updated lenses are needed for understanding the impact of the pandemic on playing and vice versa; in other words, video games can become a lens through which we can understand how teenagers and young adults experience and see the world around them, especially during these turbulent times. Moreover, video games are increasingly experienced in multiple ways, from watching live shows on Twitch.tv to discussing games on Reddit; as such, this additional layer must be investigated too for situating the impact of gaming practices on social and individual schemes. This article intends to provide a snapshot of how this medium can be used as a catalyst for social research, looking at its consumption but also at the social halo it conveys. More specifically, an ethnographic approach has been chosen for providing an intensive analysis of how the acclaimed video game Animal Crossing was perceived and used as a socializing tool by a teenager.

By presenting the results of the research conducted using the ethnographic method in the villages of Podhale in the first years of the 21st century, it diagnoses the popularity of national ideas in their primordial form and argues that the reason behind the durability of national ideas in common conversations about politics results from the correlation between the national-conservative rhetoric and the village imaginaries that had been created during the multigenerational experience of working on an agricultural farm.

From Local Community to Glocal Network: Place, Memory, and Identity Politics among the “Jews of Trikala” and Their Diaspora (Greece)In this paper I present some initial findings from my multilocal ethnographic and ethnohistorical research on the “Trikalan Jews”, i.e. Jews living in or originating from Trikala, a city in the Thessaly region of central Greece. In particular, my research focuses on two axes: the historical processes of community formation and its social transition after World War II as well as the recent sense of belonging of the potential members of that “community” and the ways they experience and negotiate their collective memory and identity. On a theoretical level, the first hypothesis grounded in the field is that the “community” tends to appropriate/be appropriated by subjects who currently live “elsewhere”. In this sense, it is reproduced as a glocal network in which Jewishness and locality are interconnected, experienced, and performed in multiple, fluid, and often fragmented ways. On a methodological level, my research is based on the fundamental techniques of ethnographic and ethnohistorical research which have been adapted to the conditions and restraints of a multilocal field. From the research we can assume that the Holocaust resulted in the extermination of an important part of the Trikalan Jewish community, while post-war emigration led to its gradual social disintegration, diffusion, and integration to broader ethnoreligious and national realities. Today this glocal “community” has imaginary, symbolic, and ceremonial rather than “practical” sociocultural dimensions. However, the recording, “rescue” and disclosure of communal history, memory and “cultural heritage” compose a fundamental field for the reconstitution of the bonds between the potential members of the “community” and thus for its reconstruction as a glocalized network of sociocultural interaction. Badania prowadzą do wniosku, że Zagłada przyniosła eksterminację ważnej części społeczności Żydów z Trikali, podczas gdy powojenne migracje prowadziły do jej stopniowej dezintegracji, rozproszenia i włączenia do szerszych realiów [systemów] etnoreligijnych i narodowych.

This paper consists of three main parts. In the first part the author describes the progress of her research on the life of a selected virtual community. She presents the areas of interest to her, which include various aspects of virtual community functioning – such as the communicative, counseling or social aspect, as well as the one associated with the sense of local identity. In the second part the author describes the dilemmas she faces in the course of her research. They refer to the ethical aspect of involved research. The third part contains a description of a particular research procedure. The concept of emic research developed by Keneth Lee Pike constitutes the methodological inspiration for the author. The essential features of this research strategy include: the study of cultures “from the inside”, the use of the culture participant plane by the researcher, the use of participant internal observation, referring to the terms of members, and most of all – maintaining an emotional involvement by the researcher. Eventually, all these elements have proved to be very helpful and provided a methodological support in the research conducted by the author.

Już pierwsze etnografie społeczności internetowych realizowały narracyjny model opowieści o osobistym doświadczeniu. Dziś to podejście nadal reprezentuje wielu badaczy cyberkultury, coraz częściej uprawiających autoetnografię metodologicznie świadomą i intencjonalnie wpisaną w korpus technik etnograficznych. Artykuł przedstawia charakterystykę, historię i dorobek tak rozumianej autoetnografii Internetu – umocowanej teoretycznie i metodologicznie w tradycji jakościowych badań społecznych, poszukującej równowagi między emic i etic w narracyjnej warstwie tekstu etnograficznego i stawiającej w centrum swojego zainteresowania relację pomiędzy podmiotem a przedmiotem badania.
Even the very first ethnographies of internet-based communities have accomplished a narrative model of personal experience story. Today, this attitude is still represented by many researchers. They cultivate autoethnographical methodology more frequently, consciously, and intentionally incorporating it into ethnographic techniques corpus. The article introduces profile, history, and attainments of regarded as such internet-based autoethnography – theoretically and methodologically grounded in qualitative social research, seeking balance between emic and etic in a narrative layer of ethnographic text, and focused on relation between subject and object of the research.

Opis:
Autoethnography has recently become a popular form of qualitative research. The current discourse on this genre of research refers almost exclusively to “evocative autoethnography” that draws upon postmodern sensibilities and advocates distance themselves from realist and analytic ethnographic traditions. The dominance of evocative autoethnography has obscured recognition of the compatibility of autoethnographic research with more traditional ethnographic practices. The author proposes the term analytic autoethnography to refer to research in which the researcher is (1) a full member in the research group or setting, (2) visible as such a member in published texts, and (3) committed to developing theoretical understandings of broader social phenomena. After briefly tracing the history of proto-autoethnographic research among realist ethnographers, the author proposes five key features of analytic autoethnography. He concludes with a consideration of the advantages and limitations of this genre of qualitative research.

This critical ethnographic study was conducted among 15 immigrants originally from Caucasian and Central Asian countries, each with more than 10 years of undocumented residence in Moscow. It focuses on the everyday experiences of undocumented immigrants in a non-Western context, illustrating how informal networks, alongside official migration policies, contribute to and exploit unequal capabilities. The study emphasises the thresholds of emotions, affiliation and control over a person’s environment, demonstrating power asymmetries between individuals. Given the participants’ prolonged undocumented stay in Moscow, the findings demonstrate how the socio-legal context of an undocumented status facilitates informal exploitation alongside institutional operating models, aligning with migration policies in practice.

Opis:
As early as the first half of the 19th century, attempts were made to describe the inhabitants of the Carpathians (Carpathian Highlander Region – Góralszczyzna), taking into account the existing divisions into groups (“clans”) or ethnographic regions. In accordance with the modernist (Enlightenment-positivist) paradigm of scientific cognition, these groups / regions were presented in a “substantial” manner, following the principles of the objective and methodological naturalism. The first researcher who divided the population living in the northern slopes of the Carpathians – analogically to how these mountains are divided – into three “ethnographic groups” and in then into “clans” was Wincenty Pol. He did not present this quite detailed ethnographic delimitation in a graphic form due to the lack of a map suitable for this purpose. A detailed map, presenting the divisions and ranges of the Polish Highlander Region and its ethnographic groups proposed by Pol and several other researchers, was made only almost 120 years later by Józef Babicz. The differences between the boundaries of the Highlander region and the ranges of the groups / regions it contains indicate that the substantial approach to these issues is inadequate to the depicted social and cultural reality. Certain views of Pol may inspire the creation of an alternative concept of ethnographic diversity in general, and of the Polish Highlander Region in particular.

The article – by probing / pipetting method – presents the Polish peasants’ applications for former German land in the Łazisko commune from the period of land reform (1944). It opens a problem area and shows that the ethnographic / anthropological reading of documents, which are peasant applications for land, attempts to illuminate an old problems with a new light. The article is a contribution to the Alternative History of land reform, the axis of which is to examine the peasant experience of land reform in the context of relations with German settlers who disappeared from the common local cultural landscape. The alternativity or anthropology of the approach used is based on: shifting the perspective from a macro historic to a micro historic one, focusing on documents located on the border of formality and informality (objectivity and subjectivity, facts and sphere of emotions), deriving history from national borders (for the purpose of focusing on universal suffering), the discourse of counter-history.

Opis:
The paper uses examples from rural studies to demonstrate the relevance of symbolic interactionism for unlocking the complexity of contemporary society. It does so by making a case for a nonprescriptive theory-method dialectic. Case examples are drawn upon in support of the argumentation, including early interactionism and ethnographic work in the United Kingdom, and, in the second half of the paper, rural sociology and fieldwork. The main argument presented is that the traditional remit of interactionism should be extended to recognize how absence is increasingly influential. It concludes that interactionism is in tune with other new trajectories in the social sciences that take into consideration co-presence proximity both on and off-line.

This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.
