Opis:
The multidisciplinary approach to the study of metals which we are proposing includes the modernization of the curricular content and its connection with everyday life. The use of additional teaching material in elementary schools in rural and urban areas in the wider region of the city of Niš has contributed to increased interest and activities on the part of the schoolchildren, which has in turn led to a significant quantitative improvement in their knowledge of chemistry in general, but also of metals in particular. All of the schoolchildren achieved a satisfactory level of knowledge (>50%) following the implementation of the expanded curriculum.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to map teachers’ preferred approaches to handling bullying among students. The scaled Handling Bullying Questionnaire (Bauman et al., 2008) was used. The structure of the research tool was determined using exploratory factor analysis indicating the existence of 5 dimensions. The good fit of the model to the actual data was verified using confirmatory factor analysis returning very good values of the good fit indices (CFI, TLI, RMSEA, SRMR, GFI). 696 teachers of the elementary school second level participated in the research. Their mean age was 46.53 years (SD = 9.34) and the mean length of their experience was 21.10 years (SD = 10.44). Male teachers scored statistically significantly higher on the dimension „Disciplining the bully“; teachers who had obtained their qualification through a supplementary pedagogical study scored statistically significantly lower on the dimension „Ignoring the incident“ and higher on the dimensions „Enlisting other adults“ and „Disciplining the bully“; class teachers scored statistically significantly higher on the dimension „Working with the bully“; teachers having received anti-bullying training within their continuing education scored statistically significantly higher on the dimensions „Working with the bully“ and „Enlisting other adults“; teachers with functions aimed at sorting out students’ problem behaviour scored the lowest on the dimension „Ignoring the incident“. Neglectful and weak effects were identified of the differences in resulting values. Also, a weak direct dependence appeared between working with the bully as the preferred approach and the length of teachers’ experience.

The article deals with the issue of incorporating the school subject technology, with its interactive content, into the system of educational subjects at elementary school. It should make a significant contribution to the technical education of pupils and their future professional orientation. Technical education is an organic part of general education, as was also underlined by the UNESCO World Organization. Already in 1974, it announced a program according to which technical education should aim at acquiring the basic knowledge in the field of technology and its practical application in solving technical problems. Our State Educational Program supports a comprehensive approach to developing pupils‘ ability to learn, act, evaluate, understand and comprehend, at a given level of education. It is a starting point and a binding document for creating an individual school educational program that takes into account specific local and regional conditions and needs.

Many authors have spoken against controlling environments and in favour of autonomous ones. In order to estimate perceived autonomy levels in the classroom, we decided to compare teachers’ perceptions with students’ ones, gaining a more accurate idea of the autonomy levels present in the classroom. The study participants (231 students, 18 teachers) provided data which showed how the teachers’ perceptions differ from the students’ ones in all cases, generally the teachers rating autonomy levels higher than the students. We also found indicators of differences present among teachers of the same subject areas as well as in terms of the students’ gender, school and age.

An overview of the literature on gifted students suggests that students can be gifted by showing intelligence and/or creative abilities. Whether teachers are able to recognize intelligent and/or creative students is a matter of being skilled and can have a tremendous impact on students’ course of education. In out study, we included students of Slovenian primary schools who were either recognized as gifted or non-gifted by their teachers. To find out what differences occur in the creativity levels of gifted and non-gifted students, their creativity levels were recorded using the LV1Test, measuring their artistic-creative and artistic-appreciative abilities. Data analysis reveals that the gifted students were more successful in gaining a higher average score on the test, as well as the majority of individual items in the test.

Numbers are fundamental mathematical concepts that underlie various other mathematical principles. This research investigates the relationship between number sense and the numeracy abilities of fifth-grade elementary school students. A cross-sectional survey method was used, with 205 respondents voluntarily participating. The results showed a reciprocal relationship between number sense and numeracy in elementary school students. Emphasising number sense can enhance flexibility in numeracy solutions. Number sense can be developed through assigning math tasks related to the students' environment or associating it with other learning processes. The study emphasises the importance of number sense in the primary school mathematics curriculum.

In elementary education, books and the messages they put across determine the way in which children perceive the world around them. Therefore, reading has become a tool of raising and educating the youngest children in the course of remote learning. The collection of obligatory books for classes 1–3, suggested by the Minister of Education, touches upon difficult issues related to contemporary life and children’s experiences in a limited way. The article presents obligatory reading taking into account a historical perspective and the latest developments that have inspired an open project “Alternative Obligatory Reading” initiated by Towarzystwo Inteligentnej Młodzieży (Association of Intelligent Adolescents), BUKBUK website and EDICO Foundation.

Mathematics-related beliefs play an important role in giving a teacher directions for taking decisions and for their behavior in a mathematics class. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to reveal the profile of teachers’ mathemat- ics-related beliefs, the consistency among belief dimensions, teachers’ practical profile in a mathematics class, and the consistency between beliefs and teachers’ practices in a mathematics class. This research used surveys with a cross-sec- tional design to collect data from 325 elementary school teachers in Jakarta. Teachers’ beliefs instruments and teachers’ practices in mathematics class were used to collect data. The findings of this research indicate that teachers tend to be constructivism-oriented but are not accompanied with suitable practices in mathematics class. Moreover, complex relationships also occur in both belief dimensions and in their relationships with the practices in a mathematics class.

Verbal fluency (VF) is a good indicator of a child’s academic prowess and later academic success. The goal of the present study was to examine the association between VF and inhibitory control. An additional goal was to examine the developmental trajectories of VF in relation to the grade and gender of the children. The sample for this study consisted of 210 children attending grades 1 to 3. Children’s performance was measured on two VF tasks: semantic fluency and phonological fluency. As a measure of inhibitory control we used a number of commission errors committed on the Multiple Choice Reaction Test. The results of this study indicate the lack of association between VF and inhibitory control. Children improved significantly in VF from grade 1 to grade 3. In relation to gender, girls outperformed boys on the test of phonological fluency but not on the test of semantic fluency. Given the importance of VF, these skills need to be tackled during the elementary school period and even earlier in preschool.

Opis:
Objectives of the research: The main aim of the research was to verify the quality of the implementation of the “Good Behavior Game” (GBG) program in Polish schools and to determine its effects on students and teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research methods: The methodology of the research was based on qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The data was retrieved from teachers’ and coaches’ assessments and the results of playing the GBG in 19 elementary schools in Krakow, Poland during four months of the COVID-19 pandemic. A short description of the context of the issue: The Good Behavior Game is an American universal prevention program that can limit the risky behavior of adolescents and young adults and can help children starting their education to play the role of a student. For teachers, it is additionally an effective tool for classroom management. It is based on four basic pillars: class rules, teamwork, positive reinforcement, and observing students’ behavior. Research findings: The results show the obstacles and difficulties involved in implementing the GBG under COVID-19 restrictions. The findings show how the actions of teachers and coaches translated into an observable reduction in pupils’ disruptive behavior. Conclusions and/or recommendations: The analysis revealed a gradual increase in the quality of program implementation in all areas of evaluation. In terms of the program’s effect on the pupils, the findings showed that over time they gradually successfully internalized the rules and were behaving in line with expectations. Using the GBG in the context of online education caused by the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic posed a challenge to teachers: they had to change teaching methods, prepare new educational resources, and modify GBG procedures. The context of the pandemic can also be seen as an added value in the education process. Better digital competences and an innovative attitude toward the education process were observed among both teachers and students.
