Opis:
The paper gives a short description of unstable behaviour of saturated sand under undrained monotonic loading. Constitutive model Nor Sand capable to describe static liquefaction is presented. The model is based on critical state soil mechanics and assumes associated flow rule. Hardening law incorporates the state parameter proposed earlier by Been and Jefferies. Results of numerical simulations of undrained element tests have been presented and discussed.

Opis:
In this paper a hypoplastic model proposed by Gudehus and Bauer is presented which is apt to describe the mechanical behaviour of loose and dense sand within a wide range of pressures and densities using a single set of constants. State changes are assumed to depend on the current void ratio, the Cauchy stress tensor and the stretching tensor. The constitutive equation is of the rate type and based on non-linear tensor-valued functions. By including a pressure dependent relative density the hypoplastic model describes the influence of pressure and density on the incremental stiffness, the peak friction angle and on the void ratio in a stationary state. The performance of the hypoplastic models is discussed and the results of numerical simulations are compared with experiments.

Opis:
Development of high-performance finite elements for thick, moderately thick, as well as thin shells and plates, was one of the active areas of the finite element technology for 40 years, followed by hundreds of publications. A variety of shell elements exist in the FE codes, but "the best" finite element is still to be discovered. The paper deals with an evaluation of some existing shell finite elements, from the point of view of the third of three requirements to be satisfied by the element: ellipticity, consistency and inf-sup condition. It is difficult to prove the inf-sup condition analytically, so, a numerical verification is proposed. A set of numerical tests is considered for shell and plate problems. Two norm matrices and a selection of the stiffness matrices (bending, shear and membrane dominated) are analysed. Finite elements from various computer systems can be evaluated and compared with the use of the proposed tests.
Elementy skończone płyt i powłok powinny spełniać trzy warunki poprawności sformułowania: warunek eliptyczności, warunek zgodności i warunek inf-sup. Najtrudniejszy do sprawdzenia jest warunek inf-sup. W pracy rozwinięto i zweryfikowano koncepcje numerycznej weryfikacji tego warunku, zaproponowanej w pracach Bathego i współpracowników. Przedstawiono i zweryfikowano szereg testów płyt o różnych warunkach brzegowych, oraz powłok o różnych krzywiznach Gaussa, w kształcie sfery, walce, paraboloidy hiperbolicznej, stożka i konoidy.

Opis:
The article describes the problem of material fracture in metal forming processes. It describes and compares the values of damage functions obtained in classical tensile and torsion tests of two materials, i.e. CW008A copper and S355 steel under cold forming conditions. The presented research methodology includes experimental tests and numerical simulation carried out using Simufact.Forming v.15 software. The damage values were analysed according to various criteria, including the growth and coalescence of micro cracks (Rice&Tracey, Oyane, Argon), the initiation and development of ductile cracking in forming processes (Freudenthal, Cockroft-Latham, Brozzo, Oh) and using extended phenomenological models based on the history of stress triaxiality (Ayada) or the mean and equivalent stress (Zhan). The conducted tests showed that the values of the damage function depend on: the calibration test, the material grade and the geometry of the specimen.

Opis:
Numerical simulations of the behaviour of cohesionless sand were carried out using a discrete element method. A drained triaxial test of a homogeneous sand specimen under constant lateral pressure was modelled. To simulate the behaviour of sand, a 3D spherical discrete model YADE was used, enhanced by including rolling resistance in order to take into account grain roughness. Numerical results were directly compared with corresponding laboratory tests. The effects of lateral pressure, initial void ratio and micro-parameters on the global behaviour of sand were investigated.

Opis:
To detect and to diagnose, the localized defect in rolling bearings, a statistical model based on the sequential Wald test is established to generate a “hypothetical” signal which takes the state zero in absence of the defect, and the state one if a peak of resonance caused by the defect in the bearing is present. The autocorrelation of this signal allows one to reveal the periodicity of the defect and, consequently, one can establish the diagnosis by comparing the frequency of the defect with the characteristic frequencies of the bearing. The originality of this work is the use of the Wald test in the signal processing domain. Secondly, this method permits the detection without considering the level of noise and the number of observations, it can be used as a support for the Fast Fourier Transform. Finally, the simulated and experimental signals are used to show the efficiency of this method based on the Wald test.

The main aim of this study is to carry out dynamic simulations of structural response of reinforced concrete bridge loaded with a moving heavy vehicle. Computational dynamics analysis was conducted using LS-DYNA computer code. The selected bridge was a reinforced-concrete structure located on the U.S. 90 in Northwest Florida. The bridge has six prestressed AASHTO type III beams and concrete deck. An 8-axle vehicle including a tractor unit and a low bed trailer were selected as a representative for the study. FE model of the tractor based on previous studies; however, a FE model of the trailer was developed for the present work. Analyses included passages of a vehicle with 47 tonnes cargo. A cargo resting on a trailer was taken into account by changing the material density of selected components in the semi-trailer FE model. Time histories of the bridge deflections in the middle of the span were recorded during the simulation tests. Simulations were performed for the vehicle velocity between 20 and 50 mph, stepped by 5 mph. An influence of the velocity on the bridge deflection was determined. The main objective of the simulation tests on the selected bridge was to assess the actual dynamic load allowance (DLA), also known as impact factor, based on the maximum deflection of the bridge span as a function of the vehicle velocity.

Opis:
Due to their excellent performance, composite materials are increasingly used in the marine field. It is of great importance to study the low-velocity impact performance of composite laminates to ensure the operational safety of composite ship structures. Herein, low-velocity drop-weight impact tests were carried out on 12 types of GRP laminates with different layup forms. The impact-induced mechanical response characteristics of the GRP laminates were obtained. Based on the damage model and stiffness degradation criterion of the composite laminates, a low-velocity impact simulation model was proposed by writing a VUMAT subroutine and using the 3D Hashin failure criterion and the cohesive zone model. The fibre failure, matrix failure and interlaminar failure of the composite structures could be determined by this model. The predicted mechanical behaviours of the composite laminates with different layup forms were verified through comparisons with the impact test results, which revealed that the simulation model can well characterise the low-velocity impact process of the composite laminates. According to the damage morphologies of the impact and back sides, the influence of the different layup forms on the low-velocity impact damage of the GRP laminates was summarised. The layup form had great effects on the damage of the composite laminates. Especially, the outer 2‒3 layers play a major role in the damage of the impact and the back side. For the same impact energy, the damage areas are larger for the back side than for the impact side, and there is a corresponding layup form to minimise the damage area. Through analyses of the time response relationships of impact force, impactor displacement, rebound velocity and absorbed energy, a better layup form of GRP laminates was obtained. Among the 12 plates, the maximum impact force, absorbed energy and damage area of the plate P4 are the smallest, and it has better impact resistance than the others, and can be more in line with the requirements of composite ships. It is beneficial to study the low-velocity impact performance of composite ship structures.

Opis:
The presence of geometric discontinuity in a material reduces considerably its resistance to mechanical stresses, therefore reducing the service life of materials. The analysis of structural behaviour in the presence of geometric discontinuities is important to ensure the proper use, especially if it is regarding a material of weak mechanical properties such as a polymer. The objective of the present work is to analyse the effect of the notch presence of variable geometric shapes on the tensile strength of epoxy-type polymer specimens. A series of tensile tests were carried out on standardised specimens, taking into account the presence or absence of a notch. Each series of tests contains five specimens. Two notch shapes were considered: circular (hole) and elliptical. The experimental results in terms of stress–strain clearly show that the presence of notches reduces considerably the resistance of the material, where the maximum stress for the undamaged specimen was 41.22 MPa and the lowest stress for the elliptical-notched specimen was 11.21 MPa. A numerical analysis by the extended finite element method (XFEM) was undertaken on the same geometric models; in addition, the results in stress–strain form were validated with the experimental results. A remarkable improvement was obtained (generally an error within 0.06%) for strain, maximum stress, Young’s modulus and elongation values. An exponential decrease was noted in the stress, strain, and Young’s modulus in the presence of a notch in the material.

This paper presents the review concerning mechanical properties of bone and the miniature specimen test techniques. For developing a realistic understanding of how factors such as moisture content, mineralization, age, species, location, gender, rate of deformation etc. affect the mechanical properties of bone, it is critical to understand the role of these factors. A general survey on existing research work is presented on this aspect. The essential features of miniature specimen test techniques are described, along with the application of small punch test method to evaluate the mechanical behavior of materials. The procedure for the determination of tensile and fracture properties, such as: yield strength, ultimate strength, ductility, fracture toughness etc. using small punch test technique have been described. The empirical equations proposed by various investigators for the prediction of tensile and fracture properties are presented and discussed. In some cases, the predictions of material properties have been essentially made through the finite element simulation. The finite element simulation of miniature specimen test technique is also covered in this review. The use of inverse finite element procedure for the prediction of uniaxial tensile constitutive behaviour of materials is also presented.

However, the tested locomotive was slightly modernized in comparison with the original one. Finite element model of the locomotive was developed by the authors whereas the vehicle FE model was download from the free database of such models. FE analysis was carried out according to the PN-EN 15227 standard which provides crashworthiness requirements for railway vehicle bodies. 15 tons large truck was selected as a representative for the study. Opis:
Metal foams are relatively novel materials that due to excellent mechanical, thermal, and insulation properties have found wide usage in different engineering applications such as energy absorbers, bone substitute implants, sandwich structure cores, etc. In common numerical studies, the mechanical properties of foams are usually introduced to FE models by considering homogenized uniform properties in different parts of a foamy structure. However, in highly irregular foams, due to complex micro-geometry, considering a uniform mechanical property for all portions of the foam leads to inaccurate results. Modeling the micro-architecture of foams enables better following of the mechanisms acting in micro-scale which would lead to more accurate numerical predictions. In this study, static mechanical behavior of several closed-cell foam samples has been simulated and validated against experimental results. The samples were first imaged using a multi-slice CT-Scan device. Subsequently, experimental compression tests were carried out on the samples using a uniaxial compression testing machine. The CT data were then used for creating micro-scale 3D models of the samples. According to the darkness or brightness of the CT images, different densities were assigned to different parts of the micro-scale FE models of the foam samples. Depending on density of the material at a point, the elastic modulus was considered for it. Three different formulas were considered in different simulations for relating the local elastic modulus of the foam material to density of the foam material at that point. ANSYS implicit solver was used for the simulations. Finally, the results of the FE models based on the three formulas were compared to each other and to the experimental results to show the best formula for modeling the closed-cell foams.
