Opis:
The article discusses the results of censuses conducted in 1978, 1988 and 2002 with respect to the disabled people in Poland. The aim of my analysis is to present the dynamics of disability as well as the changes in the diversification of that community as far as sex, age, place of residence, education, marital status, major source of income and finally, employment are concerned. The results of the analysis point to over twice as large rise in the number of disabled people in the past 25 years, rise in the scope of disability which correlates with old age, female sex, and residence in the country. Moreover, there are a significant socio-demographic diversification and stability of correlates of their disadvantageous situation in comparison with 'able' individuals. Finally, I am presenting the benefits stemming from comparative census data for verification of various hypotheses formulated in the basis of other kinds of research (a chance of secondary research) and any future studies of disability.

Introduction: Every year in Poland spinal cord injury occurs in about 800 people. They have to learn to live in a completely new world suited to the skills and abilities of healthy people. The aim of the research was to find out how the adaptation to self-disability among people with paraplegia proceeds in relation to its duration. Material and methods: 40 people with spinal cord injury took part in the research. They were divided into two groups according to the duration of their disability: up to two years of disability and from five years on. In the research the “Psycho-social adaptation” anamnesis created by the author of this paper was used. Its questions covered four categories: Attitude towards self-disability; Interpersonal relations; Work and recreation; Plans, desires, dreams. Results: Persons with a shorter course of paraplegia more often emphasized the negative sides of their disability: barriers, their own defects and restraints. On the other hand, persons with a longer course of paraplegia were aware of their limitations, but they were also able to point out a lot of positive sides of their disability. Conclusion: The research has confirmed the fact that a longer period of disability leads to better adaptation to it, but further analyses with a larger group of the examined is necessary. It must also be taken into consideration that the course of time is just one of many factors positively affecting the adaptation process.

The contemporary approach to family focuses on its functioning as a system of mutual interactions. While speaking about family one should bear in mind its particular elements, all of them taken against the background of the action of the overall family system. In technical literature one may find two positions that characterise the psychosocial situation of adolescents with disabled brothers or sisters. On the one hand adolescents with mentally disabled brothers or sisters may be exposed to more emotional problems, deviation in behaviour, lack of strong relations with their family, anxiety about the existence of a disabled brother or sister, a sense of nuisance triggered by the care about disabled brothers or sisters. On the other hand some authors stress that able-bodied siblings do not have to suffer from emotional, adjustable problems, and may develop effective methods by which to overcome their problems. One can distinguish three main relations between able-bodied and disabled siblings: positive contact, negative contact, and neutral contact.

Opis:
This article describes the use of the ICF, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, in rehabilitation and physiotherapy and the way the ICF can help to select proper assessment instruments for patients during the rehabilitation process. The ICF is a classification developed by the WHO to describe the functioning of a client. The ICF can be used to classify very relevant data in the process and outcome of rehabilitation care and physical therapy, such as the findings of the patient, the findings of the therapist, the functional diagnosis (the outcome of the diagnostic process), the treatment goals and the treatment results. Assessment instruments are tools to measure characteristics of the person or the environment, which are relevant in the process of rehabilitation or physiotherapy practice. These assessments can be tests, observation instruments and questionnaires and can be used as diagnostic and prognostic test and as outcome and evaluation measurements. In the selection of one or more instruments for an individual patient, there are several steps the professional has to take: 1) know the purpose(s) of using an instrument; 2) select the clinical variables you are interested in; 3) find the instruments that measure the chosen clinical variables; 4) determine the applicability, availability and feasibility of the instrument; 5) know the psychometric characteristics of the chosen instruments; 6) select the instruments that seem adequate; and 7) implement, use and evaluate the instruments. These steps are described.
W niniejszym artykule opisano zastosowanie Międzynarodowej Klasyfikacji Funkcjonowania, Niepełnosprawności i Zdrowia (ang. International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, ICF) w rehabilitacji i fizjoterapii oraz sposób, w jaki można wykorzystać ICF jako narzędzie wspomagające w wyborze właściwych narzędzi oceny stanu pacjentów podczas rehabilitacji.

Hence, in the paper some parts of investigations were explained and discussed, with greater accuracy. It is shown that the computer applications can be controlled by a human voice. The computer controlling processes are available by means of utterance of isolated words, where application events with the aid of user's voice can be serviced. The voice usage can be convenient for blind or partially sighted users or for persons with limb paresis. The Microsoft application events, by means of the practicable Microsoft Windows firmware MSAA® technology can be analysed. Such technology, together with isolated word descriptors, as voice recognition system, has been presented.

Background and purpose: Depression is a common complication of multiple sclerosis. It can essentially affect the natural course of the disease, treatment and rehabilitation results and can significantly decrease the quality of life. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of depression on multiple sclerosis patients’ quality of life using the Polish version of the Functional Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis questionnaire (FAMS).Material and methods: Ninety-four patients aged 18–51 years, treated as inpatients at a neurological department, were examined. Depression was diagnosed using the DSM-IV criteria. Depression was assessed by means of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). The influence of depression on the quality of life assessed with Functional Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis questionnaire (FAMS) and its association with locomotor insufficiency were analyzed (EDSS-Kurtzky Scale). The Fischer exact test and the Mann-Whitney test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Fifty-eight patients (62%) suffered from depression. Among them, 48 patients (51%) suffered mild depression and 10 patients (11%) had moderate or severe depression. A significantly better quality of life was noted in patients without depression in comparison to patients with mild and, especially, to those with moderate or severe depression (p < 0.005). A clear association between the degree of locomotor insufficiency, depression severity, and quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis was found. Conclusions: High incidence of depression and its severity are associated with locomotor insufficiency. Depression significantly affects multiple sclerosis patients’ quality of life. The Polish version of FAMS questionnaire is a reliable and sensitive tool assessing quality of life and should be widely used in clinical practice.

This paper presents teaching reading and bibliotherapy as useful methods for educating and rehabilitating children and youth with mental disability. The theoretical framework is connected with different examples of applying the methods and their real effectiveness. Particularly significant achievements of teaching reading may be observed in the rehabilitation of children with Down syndrome (DS). Teaching reading is very often matched with bibliotherapy programmes as a complex and coherent way for developing children’s speech, language, memory, imagination, creative thinking, and emotional maturity.

This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.

The following article is the third publication presenting the results of a study concerning the professional activity of handicapped people (see: „Nauka” 1/2008 and „Nauka” 2/2008). The purpose of this part of the research was to determine whether there is a relationship between professional status, life satisfaction, and various personal competencies among handicapped people. Apart from this, we also wanted to establish what conditions personal competencies by focusing on social-demographic factors and disability characteristics. The tested competencies were isolated from the administered questionnaire using a factor analysis. Seven factors were found: locus of control, level of aspiration, potential for development, effort invested in development, impulsiveness, stamina, and mood. Analysis of the results leads to the following conclusions: (1) personal competencies are significantly related to professional activity for handicapped people, as is level of life satisfaction, (2) personal competencies are related to external factors shaping the development of handicapped people, such as: dwelling, gender, level of disability, and type of disability.

The article is the forth one prepared by our team in the series of research on life quality and occupational activity among people with ability limitations („Nauka” 1/2008, „Nauka” 2/2008, „Nauka” 3/2008). The aim of the presented analysis was to create the complex model of determinants for occupational activities of people with disabilities that takes into account the broadest possible look-out. That is why we used the variables from all the fields analyzed in the previous papers in this series i.e. (1) SES; (2) characteristics of disabilities (the type, the degree, the age of acquiring disability); (3) upbringing characteristics in childhood; (4) social network; (5) personal capacities. In order to discover the significant determinants of occupational activities and quality of life among people with different disabilities – which could be both risk and success factors – we have divided the subjects into four groups according to two variables: (1) occupationally active or inactive patients and (2) patients satisfied/dissatisfied with their own income. The group with the largest observed number of risk factors has consisted of the subjects that have been inactive (non-looking for a job) and unsatisfied with their own income. Gender, city size, education, received support, social relations, disability characteristics, upbringing characteristics and personality traits have turned out to be significant risk/success factors. Moreover the results show that in different groups of people with disabilities we find different settings of risk and success factors.

The following article presents the goals and assumptions contained in the project entitled “Psychosocial influences concerning disabled people’s professional activity”. The study was conducted in four stages: (1) document analysis and literature review presenting research concerning how disabled people function on the job market; (2) expert opinions, including disabled people; (3) qualitative studies employing Maxqda2 to analyze information gathered from 311 interviews; and (4) quantitative research on a sample of 1498 participants with various types of disabilities (hearing, sight, physical, somatic, and psychological) conducted in 2007. The following article presents the first set of results obtained, referring to connections on a socio-demographic level (place of residence, gender, age, education, and marital status) as well as those isolating disability characteristics (type, level, and genesis) against degree of life satisfaction. Comparisons were executed for five groups with various employment statuses: employed, those looking for employment who had worked before, those looking for employment who had no previous employment experience, previously employed but had no intention of returning to the workforce and those who had never worked and had no intention of becoming employed. Lowest feelings of life satisfaction were among those not looking for employment whereas highest levels of life satisfaction occurred amongst employed participants. Important risk factors: gender (female), age (elderly), low education, marital status (single), place of residence (non-city dwellers), disability (innate and level).

The study presents results of investigations carried out in the course of driving a motorcar by a person with a locomotive disability. Driving tests were conducted in road conditions, The scope of the performed analysis covered investigations concerning somatic and receptor relationships in the man - technical means system and, to a lesser extent, dealt with the psychological aspects of vehicle driving. The investigations employed selected methods of identification of expectations from direct users - questionnaire and interview. Initial investigations were carried out for one person with a locomotive disability (paraplegia). The authors used tests for the determination of subjective sensations during motorcar driving (comfort test and seat comfort). The employed questionnaire tools used verbal and point scales. The final result of initial experiments is a description of the adjustment of the vehicle with equipment (manually-operated accelerator - brake device) to the requirements of the driver with a locomotive disability on the basis of the driver 's subjective sensations of discomfort. This type of Information obtained in the form meeting the wishes or demands of the user provides the basis for the elaboration of design requirements. The results indicate that a typical driver's space designed for an able-bodied person does not fully meet the requirements of a person with a locomotive disability.
