The created world of Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota series depicts a future society where gender identity has undergone a process of uniformisation, resulting in the erasure of gendered language. The novels take the form of a confessional (a recounting of the events of the past) which are published in the future society without the express consent of the other characters taking part in the depicted course of events. The narrator, in a motivated show of re bellion against their society’s current ideology (discussed both at the beginning of the series and as they progress with the narration), reinscribes gendered pronouns onto the unknowing characters; however, this is done on an arbitrary basis, which the narrator does not always discuss. The present paper aims to emphasize the growing number of LGBT+ novels published and the impossibility of transposing them into Romanian due to the lack of a gender-neutral pronoun that does not default to the masculine. The paper analyses Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer in order to specify the various nuances that would be lost in the cultural adaptation and translation of the novel into Romanian, a translation which has yet to occur, given the complexity and constraints of the novel and the depicted ideology behind it.

The character of alter ego of Ivana Sajko – croatian playwright – in the text a „Bomb Woman“, sends e-mails with a question “What would you do if you had twelve minutes and thirty seconds more?” to her friends and receives twenty-one replies. Among the answers there are eleven male and ten female voices. In my opinion, the proportion between male and female voices may be a significant interpretational clue. Does not it prove that the author aimed at maintaining political correctness in the text? The aim of this paper is to indicate gender inclinations of the contemporary Balcan authors basing on, among others, the following texts: „Bomb Woman“ by Ivana Sajko, „The other letter from 1920“ by Muharem Bazdulj and „Sahib“ by Nenad Veličković. Is not the protagonist’s detonationreferring again to Sajko’s text – on the symbolic level, an attempt to break with the myths of woman-mother and woman-mistress? Moreover, my goal is to demonstrate that the decisions concerning social interactions taken by the characters of the discussed texts, may be explained in psychoanalysis criteria, e.g. Oedipus complex.

(Un) translatability and Cultural Assimilation Criteria This article investigates a problem of untranslability as one of the major issues Translation Studies. The presented studies focus on the cultural assimilation understood as a common ground for understanding and receiving messages. The author bases his analysis on untranslability thesis as well as on the types of cultural incompatibility and he creates the criteria of cultural assimilation, which help to determine a degree to which a translated text has been received.

The inclusion of peace treaty articles between Christian powers in an Ottoman historical work of the late seventeenth century is unquestionably distinctive. The article presents an Ottoman translation of the Treaty of Ryswick (1697) concluded between the French king and the German emperor. This translation is included by the late seventeenth – early eighteenth-century Ottoman historian and palace official Silāḥdār Fındıklılı Meḥmed Aġa in his historical work called ‘The Book of Victory’ (Nuṣretnāme). With this unique text as its basis, the article will first attempt to place the translation in its historical context and explain the possible reasons for its inclusion by Silahdar in his history. Secondly, to morphologically evaluate the text to bring to the fore the translation strategies adopted and to explore the reception and the degree of understanding by the Ottoman side of the basic terms and linguistic topoi of a Christian European peace treaty. And lastly, to analyse the specific interpretation ascribed to the Ryswick agreement by the Ottoman leadership.

In this article, we undergo a comparative analysis of emotions in translation, particularly fear, in a Romanian tale rendered into French. The apparent simplicity of children's literature and its translation hides several difficulties as well on the linguistic level, as on the socio-cultural one. Our corpus is composed of a tale of Ion Creangă, a writer known for Romanian children's literature, Capra cu trei iezi [The goat and her three kids], and the collaborative version of M. Stanciu Stoian and Ode de Chateauvieux Lebel (1931) and the version of Mariana Cojan Negulescu (1996). 
Cet article envisage l’analyse comparative des émotions en traduction, en particulier, la peur, dans un conte roumain rendu en français. La simplicité apparente de la littérature de jeunesse et de sa traduction cache plusieurs difficultés autant au niveau linguistique, que socio-culturel. Le corpus d’analyse consiste dans un conte de Ion Creangă, un auteur connu pour la littérature enfantine roumaine, Capra cu trei iezi [La chèvre et les trois biquets], et deux traductions : la version collaborative de M. Stanciu Stoian et Ode de Chateauvieux Lebel (1931) et la version bilingue de Mariana Cojan Negulescu (1996).

“It is important to stress that a variety of positions with respect to feminism, nation, religion and identity are to be found in Anglophone Arab women’s writings. This being the case, it is doubtful whether, in discussing this literary production, much mileage is to be extracted from over emphasis of the notion of its being a conduit of ‘Third World subaltern women.’” (Nash 35) Building on Geoffrey Nash’s statement and reflecting on Deleuze and Guattari’s conceptualization of minor literature and Gloria Anzaldua’s Borderland(s), we will discuss in this paper how the writings of Arab Anglophone women are specific minor and borderland narratives within minor literature(s) through a tentative (re)localization of Arab women’s English literature into distinct and various categories. By referring to various bestselling English works produced by Arab British and Arab American women authors, our aim is to establish a new taxonomy that may fit the specificity of these works

The article focuses on the translation of non-literary Chinese proper names, a subject which to date has not enjoyed much research interest as a result of the common belief that proper names are untranslatable. The article discusses techniques used in the translation of Chinese anthroponyms, toponyms and brand names into Polish and English. The author refers to the strategies used in the process of transferring names to the target language and presents the consequences of applying given techniques from the cognitive perspective, which entails analysing the names in terms of their structure and meaning. Particular attention is paid to the connotations of the names, the impact they have on the speakers of a given language, as well as the mental images that can be derived from their structure. In the contrastive analysis of the names of tourist locations in Beijing and their Polish and English equivalents, the author applies the cognitive grammar approach as developed by Ronald W. Langacker. The image schemas of the names are used to present the distinct conceptualizations embodied in the names with the same references in different languages. One of the chapters describes how European names are adapted into Chinese. The study also provides an overview of the characteristics of the Chinese onomasticon, a factor which makes translation from Chinese to European languages particularly complicated. The observations made in the course of the analysis permit conclusions to be drawn on the linguistic worldview created by Polish, Chinese and English propria.

In the wake of the growing recognition of Kurt Vonnegut's prose in Poland, the publishers decided to also make his essays available to the Polish audience. Sometimes the Polish versions were translated much later than the originals, but sometimes the Polish texts directly followed the publication of the American source texts. In his essays, Vonnegut repeatedly refers to numerous aspects of the American realia: history, literature and popular culture. The references are both direct and indirect. Vonnegut's essays are an example of a text where the role of a translator as a cultural mediator is paramount. Unfortunately, not all translators have succeeded in the task. The translated texts contain evident translation flaws caused by the translator's being unfamiliar with the cultural context of the original. The paper analyses these mistakes and presents examples of how translators descriptively handled certain cultural references. This strategy helped them save the comprehensibility of the text at the cost of its unintended simplification.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę porównawczą wybranych toponimów w grze wideo The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim w językach angielskim i rosyjskim. Główny nacisk kładziony jest na aspekt semantyczny, w szczególności na różnice semantyczne. W pierwszej części artykułu wyjaśniono typowe strategie tłumaczeniowe w tłumaczeniu gier wideo, w tym aspekty specyficzne dla The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim oraz ogólnie dla gier. Druga część to analiza porównawcza wybranych toponimów w grze. Autorka komentuje opcje tłumaczeniowe i analizuje ich adekwatność, uwzględniając zarówno aspekty semantyczne, jak i kulturowe.  
This paper is a comparative analysis of selected toponyms in the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in English and Russian. The main focus is on the semantic aspect, and in particular on semantic differences. The first part of the article explains typical translation strategies in video game translation, including specific aspects of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and for games in general. The second part serves as a comparative analysis of selected toponyms in the game. The author comments on the translation options and analyzes their adequacy taking into account both the semantic and cultural aspects.   
Данная статья представляет собой сравнительный анализ отдельных топонимов в игре The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Основное внимание уделяется семантическому аспекту, а в частности семантическим различиям. Первая часть статьи объясняет типичные стратегии перевода видеоигр, включая аспекты специфические для The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Вторая часть посвящена сравнительному анализу отдельных топонимов в игре. Автор комментирует варианты перевода и анализирует их адекватность.

Opis:
Scholars Michel Espagne and Michael Werner introduced the term “cultural transfer” to humanities. The transfer is a two-sided and creative process. In the case of cultural transfer, each object (concept, law systems, ideas, commodities, literary or theatrical conventions, etc.) not only are transferred to a new context, but also acquire a new meaning.  Cultural exchange is not simply the circulation of knowledge and ideas as they are in their source environment but their reinterpretation in a new context. The article aims at analysing cultural transfer basing on Jatinder Verma’s tradaptations in intercultural theatre. It tackles such issues as the processes of cultural relocation, linguistic negotiations, heteroglossia, and new minority theatres. The author also portrays the evolution of defining and understanding of performativity, speakability, and actability in contemporary reflections on the translation of drama, and their impact on the cultural transfer of theatrical ideas and conventions.    
Literaturoznawcy, Michel Espagne i Michael Werner wprowadzili pojęcie „transferu kuturowego” do nauk humanistycznych. Proces transferu zachodzi zawsze w obie strony i jest kreatywny. W przypadku transferu kulturowego każda rzecz (koncepcje, systemy prawnych, idei, przedmioty materialne, terminy, konwencje literackie, teatralne itp.) nie tylko zostaje przeniesiona do nowego kontekstu, ale przede wszystkim nabiera nowego znaczenia. Kulturowa wymiana to nie cyrkulacja wiedzy i  idei takimi jakie są w środowisku oryginalnym, ale ich ponowna reinterpretacja w odmiennym kontekście kulturowym. Artykuł ma na celu analizę transferu kulturowego na przykładzie tradaptacji Jatindera Vermy w teatrze interkulturowym.  Naświetlone zostały procesy relokacji kulturowej klasyków, negocjacje językowe, heteroglosji i inicjacji ruchu nowych teatrów mniejszościowych. Autorka pokazuje także proces ewolucji definiowania i rozumienia takich zagadnień jak performatywność, wypowiadalność czy odgrywalność w najnowszych rozważaniach nad przekładem dramatu i ich wpływ na transfer kulturowy idei i konwencji teatralnych.

The article discusses the relationship between translation studies and sociology. It is argued that the latter can prove valuable in a deepened analysis of a given society. Surprisingly, little research has been done with regard to this issue. In order to justify the point of view that translation studies can consort with social sciences in many ways, The Golden Key, or the Adventures of Buratino – a Soviet adaptation of Collodi’s Pinocchio – is analyzed. The choices of the translator are influenced by the trends and norms in the Soviet society. These norms are further analyzed through the lenses of Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts and the Manipulation School. Thus, combining sociology and translation studies can provide an interdisciplinary perspective on social phenomena.   
Artykuł omawia związek pomiędzy naukami o przekładzie (translation studies) oraz socjologią. Uważa się, iż osiągnięcia przekładoznawstwa mogą okazać się użyteczne w analizie danego społeczeństwa. Powstało jednak relatywnie niewiele opracowań w tej kwestii. W celu uzasadnienia poglądu głoszącego, iż translation studies mogą współgrać z naukami o społeczeństwie, skupiono się na sowieckiej adaptacji „Pinokia” Collodiego: „Złoty kluczyk, czyli niezwykłe przygody pajacyka Buratino” pióra Aleksieja Tołstoja. Wybory tłumacza są zdeterminowane przez trendy i normy panujące w sowieckim społeczeństwie. Te normy zostały również zanalizowane zgodnie z koncepcjami pola i habitusu Pierre’a Bourdieu oraz założeniami szkoły manipulistów. Połączenie socjologii z przekładoznawstwem daje zatem interdyscyplinarną perspektywę na zjawiska społeczne.

In the article, we ask about the reasons and sources of the religious-social revival, that appeared on the Brazilian back-lands (sertões) at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the form of numerous millenarian and messianic movements and communities. There were different responses given on the questions of the reasons of phenomenon. In the first para-graph, we follow their evolution. In the next we consider that question from the perspective of the encounter of European culture with the cultures of the New World, understood as the process of the mutual interpenetration and the creation of a new religious mentality. In the final remarks, we make an attempt to determine the nature and extent of the relations in which the contents coming from different sources were constituting the religious and mental groundwork of the phenom-enon discussed.
En el artículo preguntamos sobre las causas y fuentes del renacimiento religioso-social que tuvo lugar en los sertões bra-sileños en el cambio de los siglos XIX y XX, en forma de los numerosos movimientos y comunidades milenaristas y me-siánicas. Sobre la cuestión de las razones de este fenómeno se dieron diferentes respuestas. En el primer párrafo seguimos la evolución de las mismas. En la próxima consideramos esta cuestión en la perspectiva del encuentro de la cultura eu-ropea con las culturas del Nuevo Mundo, entendido como el proceso de la interpenetración mutua y la creación de una nueva mentalidad religiosa. En las observaciones finales tratamos de determinar la naturaleza y extensión de las relaciones entre los contenidos provenientes de las diferentes fuentes, constituidos el fundamento religioso y mental de los fenómenos discutidos.

OCZEKIWANIE NA MLECZARZA, PODĄŻAĆ ZA BILETERKĄ, CZY TE DAWNE ZAWODY MAJĄ CEL JĘZYKOWY/DYDAKTYCZNY W AKWIZYCJI FRANCUSKIEGO JAKO JĘZYKA OBCEGO? To badanie w środowisku uniwersyteckim, w dwóch różnych instytucjach – w Warszawie i Białymstoku, z rozbieżnymi celami certyfikacji jest eksperymentalne, ale przynosi innowacyjne rezultaty. Tekst ten ma na celu wykazanie, że nauczanie i poznawanie terminologii dotyczącej dawnych zawodów, tj. terminów dawnych lub nawet archaicznych, ma cel językowy i dydaktyczny w nauce języka francuskiego jako języka obcego. Nasi uczniowie, którzy brali udział i aktywnie uczestniczyli w tym badaniu, wykazali mocne zainteresowanie tą terminologią, aby zdobyć wiedzę na temat kultury, specjalistyczne słownictwo, a także mieć przewagę językową. Attendre le laitier, suivre l’ouvreuse, ces métiers d’antan ont-ils un but linguistique/didactique dans l’acquisition du FLE? Cette étude en milieu universitaire, dans deux établissements différents – Varsovie et Białystok, avec des buts certificatifs divergents se veut expérimentale mais révélatrice quant aux résultats. En effet, ce texte vise à démontrer que la terminologie des métiers d’antan, p.ex. des termes vieillis voire archaïques ont un but linguistique et didactique dans l’apprentissage du français langue étrangère. Nos apprenants, après avoir assisté et participé très activement à cette étude, ont dévoilé un intérêt certain pour la terminologie des métiers d’antan afin d’acquérir un savoir culturel, un lexique spécialisé et aussi posséder un avantage langagier.
This study in an academic environment, in two different institutions – universities of Warsaw and Białystok, with divergent certification aims is experimental but revelatory in terms of results. Indeed, this text aims to show that the terminology of the old crafts and professions, i.e. aged or even archaic terms have a linguistic and didactic purpose in learning French as a foreign language. Our students, having attended and participated very actively in this study, have revealed a strong interest in this terminology in order that they acquire a cultural knowledge, a specialized vocabulary and also to have a lingual advantage.

Artykuł skupia się na transformacjach w zakresie obrazowania poetyckiego w tłumaczeniach wierszy Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza dokonanych przez Dmytra Pawłyczkę. Analiza porównawcza tekstów wierszy i przekładów ukazuje liczne przykłady transformacji obrazów poetyckich wynikających z niewłaściwego odczytania przez tłumacza odniesień kulturowych, prób oddania rymu lub błędnej interpretacji sensów oryginału.
У статті розглянуто трансфомації у сфері поетичного образотворення в перекладах поетичних текстів Ярослава Івашкевича, здійснених Дмитром Павличком. Порівняльний аналіз текстів віршів і фрагментів поем та їхніх перекладів демонструє численні приклади трансформації поетичних образів, що є наслідком хибної інтерпретації перекладачем культурних референцій і сенсів оригінальних текстів, а також намагання відтворити римування оригіналу.
The paper focuses on the transformations of poetic imagery in Dmytro Pavlychko’s translations of poetic works by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. The comparative analysis of the original poems and their translations shows numerous examples of shifts in imagery caused by the translator’s misinterpretation of cultural references and the senses conveyed by the original works, as well as his attempts to follow the original rhyme pattern.

In the article, the author considers cultural factors which affect the reading of literary work by Swedish and Polish audiences. The piece in question is Underdog by Torbjörn Flygt (2001, translated into Polish by Elżbieta Jasińska-Brunnberg, 2006). Analyzing the setting of the novel in historical narrative about the Swedish welfare state, the authors poses questions regarding universal or hermetic nature of Flygt’s novel.
