In this paper, we construct a ‘telling’ case to highlight a problematic inconsistency between the results of international large-scale assessments (ILSAs) and other studies of Swedish students’ knowledge of linear equations. In this context, a ‘telling’ case, based on the scrutiny of appropriately chosen cases, is presented as a social science counter-example to the prevailing view that ILSAs’ assessments are not only valid but should underpin systemic reform. Our ‘telling’ case comparison of the different forms of study shows that Swedish students, in contrast with the summative assertions of the different ILSAs, have a secure and relational understanding of linear equations that persists into adulthood. We conclude with a cautionary message for the curriculum authorities.

The article proposes an “anal” reading of Witold Gombrowicz’s Ferdydurke from the perspective of the so‑called “anal turn” in the research on masculinities within the field of queer theories. The author presents an overview of theoretical perspectives, in which anality has been recognized as a suppressed component of male identity (e.g. Freud, Bataille, Kristeva, Deleuze and Guattari, Hocquenghem, Laporte). Masculinity seen from this angle is based on a radical shift of the foundation from a phallogocentric position to a more dispersed, non‑centralist, and thus more difficult to grasp, “anal” approach. In Gombrowicz’s work this change is best illustrated in the reflections on the subject of privacy. The subjectivity of the main character of Ferdydurke organises himself not around phallus but anus, and this new, radically shifted and dispersed subjectivity is called by Gombrowicz the private (or “upupiona”, “pampered”)masculinity, which reactivates the suppressed anality. The author analyses Ferdydurke also in the context of a peculiarly understood theory of “anal work,” in the light of which a literary work appears as an excrement and writing as excretion.

Opis:
The difference between jargon, slang and specialized language often becomes blurred in the case of professional discourse. The reason is to be found in the very nature of this type of discourse, as well as in the socio-professional characteristics of its users. After carefully analyzing a significant body of oenological criticism written in Spanish by experts and wine-tasting enthusiasts, this article concludes that professional language may be regarded as a type of social dialect that functions as a badge of identity among its users. The use of such a social dialect thus aims to facilitate communication and strengthen bonds among experts and wine-tasting aficionados, while excluding those who are not in the know.
La frontière entre les jargons, les argots et la langue de spécialité parfois n’est pas évidente, surtout quand on observe les discours spécifiques des métiers. Cette contrainte relève non seulement de leur adaptation à la définition des caractéristiques de ces types de langages, mais aussi des discours où ils sont utilisés, des caractéristiques socioprofessionnelles des groupes qui les utilisent ainsi que du public auquel ils s’adressent. En me fondant sur un corpus espagnol d’expressions et de vocabulaire utilisés par des spécialistes et des amateurs de la dégustation du vin, notamment dans les médias, je me propose de faire une réflexion pour déterminer si ce corpus étudié peut être classé dans le domaine des argots ou des jargons ou s’il ne s’agit que d’un langage pseudolittéraire, dont la compréhension du sens est à la portée du grand public.

Przedstawiono główne błędy, niespójności i niedopowiedzenia zauważone w klasyfikacji gruntów według PN-EN ISO 14688:2006. W normie tej występują trzy grupy usterek: A – usterki, nieścisłości, niedopowiedzenia, które zauważono w wersji oryginalnej ISO; B – usterki wynikające z niedokładnego tłumaczenia; C – usterki występujące w załączniku krajowym. Zasadniczymi błędami w grupie A są: niespójność określenia nazwy gruntu według rozpoznania makroskopowego i na podstawie krzywej uziarnienia oraz nieprawidłowości w klasyfikacji stanów gruntów spoistych. Wykazana została niemożność prostego przejścia z nazwy gruntu według PN-86/B-02480 na nazwę gruntu według PN-EN ISO 14688:2006. Sytuacje powyższe zilustrowano przykładami graficznymi i liczbowymi. Ponadto omówiono wiele innych drobniejszych usterek i przedstawiono ogólną ocenę normy.
The paper presents main errors, incoherencies and understatements noticed in soil classification in conformity with the PN- EN LSO 14688:2006. Three groups of defects have been observed in the PN-EN ISO 14688:2006: A- defects, imprecision, understatements noticed in the original ISO version; B- defects resulted from inaccurate translation; C- defects observed in the Polish Appendix. The main errors of A group have been as follows: incoherencies in definition of soil name according to macroscopic analysis and on the basis of grain-size distribution curve as well as incorrectness in classification of states of cohesive soils. The impossibility of simple transfer from the soil name in conformity with the PN-86/B-02480 to the soil name in conformity with the PN-EN ISO 14688:2006 has been demonstrated. The adequate graphical and numerical examples have been included. In addition numerous minor defects have been discussed. The general assessment of the standard under reference has been presented.

The article analyzes the transformational potential of the #MeToo movement in terms of personal experience, institutional and social transformations, looking first of all at the dynamics the movement has created in theatre in Poland and around the world. The author unveils the systemic dimension of violence encoded in invisible and standardized relations of domination and subordination, inscribed in the two models which are still very common in Polish theatre: the “master and apprentice” model defining the position of a director and the “feudal” model visible in institutional relations. Looking at the Gardzienice case and the reactions of the public to the testimonies exposing violence, the author also mentions examples of institutional and systemic reactions to similar situations in British and Belgian theatre. In this way, she outlines possible directions for action in Polish theatre. She asks questions about the transformative and emancipatory potential of the #MeToo movement, emphasizing the necessity to consider an intersectional perspective, to build alliances and to practice promiscuous care.

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the academic discussion on the proper understanding of the notions of responsibility and innovation. In recent years, the field of Responsible Research and Innovation has grown rapidly among academia and received considerable attention. One area of focus concerns the proper understanding of the notion of the terms themselves. They are especially problematic in light of the critique that the subject has already received (cf. Blok, Lemmens 2015). This article provides an answer to that critique and proposes an alternative approach to the notions discussed. On the one hand, it outlines the so called ambivalued notion of innovation (cf. Kawalec 2015) and on the other, it presents a four-point characteristic of responsibility relevant to the field of research and innovation. In the text, the term responsibility should be understood as collective, future-oriented, socio-political, and values-oriented.

The focus of this article is on culture as a central concept of educational anthropology – a subdiscipline of anthropology that focuses on the fields of education and learning as key aspects of social life. It begins with an introduction into how culture has been criticially conceptualized in anthropology and ethnography and then illustrates how educational anthropologists have used the concepts of culture and cultural critique to analyze educational processes in diverse sociocultural settings. The author points out three primary areas in which anthropology of education enriches our understanding of education and learning: 1) investigations of diversity of educational practices in different sociocultural contexts; 2) critical examination of cultural practices and structures of inequality and exclusion vis-à-vis minority subjects in the educational process; 3) positioning of participatory research approaches and engagement as legitimate methodological and scholary standpoints. The article builts primarily on examples of texts that have been recently published in the Polish language in order to help situate the perspective of educational anthropology in Polish scholarly discourse and tradition.

This paper deals with the issue of definition of art and artwork in the sense of functionalist approach. It critically argues with the existing terms and meanings of artwork in that sense and presents them as insufficient and inadequate when speaking of modern art. Furthermore functionalism assumes that a great deal of artworks has a specific function, what we cannot say about a large number of contemporary artistic endeavors. Therefore it is being argued here that this approach, how popular it might have been in the past, must be replaced with a new paradigm of comprehension of esthetics.

The present paper discusses dystopia in the genre of horror on the basis of George A. Romero’s zombie films. Dystopia seems to be inextricably linked with the vision of the world in which the very structure of the society has been destroyed along with moral codes and the only remaining thing is the will to survive. In the Living Dead Trilogy Romero skilfully used the zombie apocalypse motif to portray both vices as virtues characteristic to American way of life. Moreover, in his motion pictures, he envisages what may be the implications of pos- sible dystopias arising from the ashes of destroyed human civilisation and, thus, gives the audiences, and the critics, an incredible resource for interpretation and further analysis. The methodology involves the paradigmatic analysis of the plots in order to show how the motif of zombie apocalypse is used to explore the notion of dystopia. Moreover, the mentioned analysis will also cover explicit, implicit and symptomatic meaning created by the analyzed films.

This paper seeks to emphasize the merits of comparative law as a critical legal enterprise. For this purpose, it first provides a brief overview of the various forms of critique that have been advocated in the field of comparative law. Second, it discusses four epistemological concerns as regards legal comparison that are meant to orient comparatists towards a critical mode of comparative reasoning. While most of the remarks comprised in this contribution apply to legal comparisons in general, a few observations shall be made with specific reference to the stakes and limits of legal comparisons in Central and Eastern Europe.

This paper is based on my Three Conference lectures about the essence of sustainable development, and the critical remarks about Polish literature devoted to this subject. In all publications examined by me authors made references to the Brundtland Report, and quoted definitions of sustainability, but they ignored the fact that this Report has been translated into Polish, and definitions are quite different. Without knowing the basic literature, and on the basis of merely their own intuition many authors gave interpre-tations which might be classified as fantasy. This is caused probably by the fact that the English adjective sustainable has been incorrectly translated as which means balanced.

In the essay, the author, Łukasz Ronduda, relates his own work as an artist, a film director, an art historian and curator, discussed in the light of the cinematic turn and the formation of common ground between cinema and contemporary art in both artistic and institutional sense. Ronduda looks closely at his two full-length feature films: Performer (2015) and Serce miłości (Heart of Love) (2017) and highlights their wider context. The first frame of reference spans from experimental films to contemporary full-length productions dedicated to wide audience. The second reference is his own work involving academic research, curating, writing a novel and the creation of a found footage film. In this self-presentation, Ronduda discloses his different attempts to find the right medium to speak about and analyze contemporary art. The full-length film turned out to be particularly effective medium in its ability to express the truth by means of fiction, placing him between creation and institutional structure. Film as a medium of interpreting art  seems to productively question fixed boundaries between research, criticism and art.

In these remarks I make the attempt to present the issue of the relation between the scientific knowledge and religious faith. It is being discussed since many centuries. In the Middle Ages it was also called the “two truths”. Nowadays it is called however as the two magisteria. The name had been proposed by the American evultionary biologist Stephen J. Gould. In his proposition it is linked to the NOMA (Non-Overlapping Magisteria) principle. It met with critique from the side of those scholars who, just as Richard Dawkins, share the view that there’s only one magisteria and it is made by science with no space for religious faith. Reservations had also been made by those scholars who, just as Andrew Newberg, do agree on the existence of two magisteria, but they should  complete each other and they are convinced that with the passing of time they will do so. I have critical remarks on both of those two views. I see however the positive side of the intentions of Gould and Newberg.

Zreferowano przeprowadzoną przez badaczkę wszechstronną analizę „hermeneutyki podejrzeń”, w której to analizie Felski wykazujała liczne ograniczenia owej hermeneutyki. Felski zaproponowała, by krytykę – rozumianą jako oschłe emocjonalnie czytanie literatury stanowiące część panoptycznego systemu władzy ujarzmiającej jednostki – zmodyfikować o jakości afektywne oraz nowe widzenie ontologii dzieła literackiego. Badaczka uważa, że dzięki Brunona Latoura teorii aktora-sieci można zacząć postrzegać utwór literacki jako sprawczego aktora pozaludzkiego. Dzieło unika wówczas udziału w jałowym sporze między ideą autonomii sztuki a radykalnym pragmatyzmem zakładającym pełną zależność znaczeń owego dzieła od kontekstu. Odsłaniana w nowych analizach fenomenologicznych literatura demonstruje swoją zdolność oddziaływania, a zarazem nie dokonuje niczego sama z siebie, lecz robi to we współpracy z innymi ważnymi aktorami ludzkimi i pozaludzkimi (czytelnikami, szkołami, czytelniczymi obyczajami rodzinnymi i innymi). Krytyka opisana w Limits of Critique staje się świadomą uczestniczką interwencji społecznych literatury polegających na wspólnym odkrywaniu możliwości zaistnienia nowych rodzajów połączeń, sieci i wspólnot. Tym samym krytyka i literatura przyczyniają się do wypracowania szczególnie efektywnych odmian sprawstwa estetycznego, ekonomicznego i politycznego.
The article discusses a groundbreaking post-critical project in Anglo-Saxon literary studies formulated in Rita Felski’s book The Limits of Critique. Tomasz Mizerkiewicz offers a comprehensive analysis of the “hermeneutics of suspicion” carried out by Felski, showing its numerous limitations. Felski argues that criticism – understood as an emotionally uninvolved reading of literature being part of the panoptic system of power that subjugates individuals – should be modified to embrace an affective quality and a new vision of the ontology of a literary work. Felski believes that thanks to Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory, it is possible to begin to perceive the literary work as a causative non-human actor. The work then avoids participating in the sterile dispute between the idea of the autonomy of art and radical pragmatism, which assumes the full dependence of the meanings of this work on the context. Theorized in new phenomenological analyses, literature demonstrates a capacity to exert influence. At the same time, it does not do anything by itself, but in cooperation with other important human and non-human actors (readers, schools, reading family customs and others). The type of critique described in The Limits of Critique becomes a conscious participant in the social interventions of literature consisting in the joint discovery of the possibility of the emergence of new types of connections, networks and communities. Thus, critique and literature contribute to the development of particularly effective varieties of aesthetic, economic and political agency.

The paper presents a variety of synesthetic metaphors used by musical critics. The metaphors were retrieved from musical critical texts written in Russian, which described classical music events. The basis of division are human senses: hearing, touch, sight and taste. Metaphors are divided into two main groups: intermodal and singlemodal ones. The most representative type turned out to be synesthetic metaphors referring to the sense of touch.

The Western world is experiencing the "death of God" and is living in a self-proclaimed "postmodern era”, which boasts of "liberating" the human being, thanks to the cult of reason and the rejection of religious dogmas. In the twentieth century, in Latin America; in the heart of Colombia, Nicolás Gómez Dávila lived and thought. The thinker emphasizes the limitations of human reason, in opposition to the modern cult of reason, freedom and the aspiration to build an earthly paradise. The objective of this article is to present this "illustrious unknown", considered by many researchers as one of the most original thinkers of the twentieth century, who played the role of philosopher-writer in the modern world in a unique style; and his critical view of democracy.

The aim of this article is to analyse the process of creation of the Malina (Raspberry) project (2018) through the prism of the assumptions of the Placówka (Outpost) programme of the Theatre Institute in Warsaw, which had a nurturing and disciplinary function towards the selected project. Starting from the definition of the relation between the group of female artists and the institution as subjects meeting in a moment of ‘career coupling’, the author reflects on how both parties interpreted the implementation of the idea of a long-term, laboratory-based creative process, including the consent to suffering a ‘productive failure’. The main body of the article revolves around establishing the reasons and consequences of the residents’ failure to exercise their right to create an open, experimental form of the work-in-progress kind. Supported by the knowledge gathered during the rehearsals for the performance and the interviews conducted, the author indicates how economic and communicative difficulties translated into decisions regarding the organisation of the theatrical process.

Starting in the second half of the 2000s, we experience not one (financial, economic) crisis, but the crises in plural, the multifaceted crisis situation in Europe. The previous, Geneva 2011, ESA Conference took up a very timely and significant, at that time, scholarly and societal, topic of “turbulent times,” in which we had lived for several years. The Turin 2013 Conference was organized is a slightly different situation.Global, including European, crises entered a new stage, but at the same time it seemed that there was a light in the tunnel. Old themes, like neo-liberal politics, economy and ideology, as well as the lost welfare state were very important for the scholars. Critical approach became a standard way of analysis of politics, economy and society, but also of political sciences, economics and sociology. Criticism was not only “negative.” For many speakers and discussants, the recent crises have been a chance to re-evaluate the former institutional arrangements and outline new, more flexible solutions.

Le XIXe siècle voit apparaître une nouvelle vision de l’artiste. Face à une société bourgeoise et matérialiste, il s’érige en chantre d’un art hautain et désintéressé. Un tel écart entre l’artiste et le public doit produire des tensions et fait naître, des deux côtés, le sentiment d’incompréhension qui souvent dégénère en mépris. Charles Baudelaire contribue beaucoup à cette conception de l’art, où la notion de mépris revient souvent : le mépris envers le public bourgeois, l’artiste embourgeoisé, le critique d’art borné – mais aussi, le mépris du profanum uulgus dirigé contre l’artiste. Trois décennies plus tard, Octave Mirbeau fait appel à cette même notion pour construire son modèle des relations entre artiste et public, modèle bien proche de celui de Baudelaire. Notre objectif est donc double : analyser le concept du mépris chez les deux artistes, et relever les nombreuses affinités qui existent au niveau thématique, stylistique et rhétorique dans leurs écrits sur l’art.
The nineteenth century sees a new vision of the artist. Faced with a bourgeois and materialistic society, he stands as a cantor of a haughty and disinterested art. Such a gap between the artist and the public must produce tension and give rise on both sides to the feeling of incomprehension which often degenerates into contempt. Charles Baudelaire contributes a lot to this conception of art, where the notion of contempt often comes up: contempt for the bourgeois public, the gentrified artist, the narrow-minded art critic – but also, the scorn of the profanum uulgus directed against the artist. Three decades later, Octave Mirbeau uses this same notion to build his model of artist – public relations, a model very similar to that of Baudelaire. Our objective is therefore twofold: to analyze the concept of contempt for both artists, and to identify many affinities that exist at the thematic, stylistic and rhetorical level in their writings on art.

The article analyses the media coverage of the accusations of sexual harassment and mobbing made against Henryk Jacek S., a long-time director of the Bagatela Theatre in Krakow, by its female employees. Based on the employees’ statements, the author tries to describe the situation in the theatre before the case was exposed. She refers to the category of ‘ugly feelings’, created and explored by Sianne Ngai, and specifically, to the affect of animatedness, which is characterised by particularly limited agency and the blurring of the boundary between the inside and the outside. The moment when the female employees broke the silence is associated by the author with the affect of disgust (as defined by Sara Ahmed) and the related revulsion and nausea. She also examines how this affective dynamic has influenced the women’s agency and effectiveness in relation to the recipients of their public appearances.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie syntetycznego uporządkowania zawartej w późnych pismach Kierkegaarda krytyki oficjalnego chrześcijaństwa, czyli tego, co w świecie funkcjonuje pod nazwą „chrześcijaństwo”, a co w rzeczywistości zdaniem Duńczyka nim nie jest. Artykuł otwiera zarys niezbędnej dla zrozumienia tej krytyki pozytywnej koncepcji chrześcijaństwa u Kierkegaarda, w szczególności jego idei naśladowania Chrystusa. Dalej omówione są trzy główne zarzuty, jakie wysuwa Duńczyk: (1) prowadzenie pogańskiego życia pod nazwą chrześcijaństwa, (2) zastąpienie naśladowania Chrystusa rozmaitymi aktywnościami werbalnymi, m.in. uczynienie z chrześcijaństwa doktryny, oraz (3) zastąpienie naśladowania Chrystusa oddawaniem mu czci. Te trzy zarzuty uzupełnione są (4) Kierkegaardowską krytyką stanu duchownego. W końcowej części zostaje postawiona teza, że przedstawiona przez Kierkegaarda krytyka ma charakter uniwersalny, tzn. dotyczy wszystkich głównych wyznań chrześcijańskich.
The paper aims at presenting a synthetic reconstruction of Kierkegaard’s late critique of what he called “official Christianity,” that is that which in the world counts as Christianity but which, according to Kierkegaard, has nothing to do with real Christianity. The paper begins with a short presentation of what according to Kierkegaard the essence of real Christianity is, with special emphasis on his idea of imitating Christ. Then his main reproaches follow: (1) leading a pagan life and calling it Christian, (2) rejection of imitation of Christ and putting some verbal activities instead, and (3) rejection of imitation of Christ and worshiping him instead. Those three points are supplemented by Kierkegaardian (4) critique of clergy. In the final section it is argued that Kierkegaard’s critique is universal in scope, i.e. it concerns all major Christian denominations.

At its peak in the 17th century, Vanity, thanks to its codification, persists beyond that age favourable to its blossoming. Just as the religious and dogmatic di-mension tends to fade in the 19th century, the symbols of vacuity and existential delusion are partly used again. Can we still talk about Vanity then, when the symbolic discourse is incomplete? From Baudelaire to Laforgue, the poetics of the 19th century bring about an axiological transfer which tends to annihilate the initial argumenta-tive impact. Consequently, why revive a tradition which is apparently incompatible with the lyrical discourse? In fact, endowed with a metadiscursive dimension, Vanity seems to relate to the critical dynamic specific to the lyricism of the second half of the 19th century and contributes to renew it. Between seriousness and irony, the pictorial transposition of Vanity fosters an intersemiotic dialogue which makes room for an-other method of transmission of feelings.
À son apogée au XVIIe siècle, la Vanité, grâce à sa codification, perdure au-delà de cette époque propice à son épanouissement. De même que la dimension religieuse et dogmatique tend à s ’estomper au XIXe, les symboles de la vacuité et de l ’illusion existentielle sont repris de manière partielle. Peut-on alors encore parler de Vanité quand le discours symbolique est lacunaire ou incomplet ? De Baudelaire à Laforgue, les poétiques du XIXe siècle opèrent un déplacement axiologique qui tend à annihi-ler la portée argumentative initiale. Dès lors, pourquoi reprendre une tradition ap-paremment incompatible avec le discours lyrique ? En fait, dotée d ’une dimension métadiscursive, la Vanité semble participer de la dynamique critique, propre au lyrisme de la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle et contribue à le renouveler. Entre sérieux et ironie, la transposition picturale de la Vanité favorise un dialogue intersémiotique qui ménage un espace vacant pour un autre mode de transmission des sentiments.
