In this paper, we construct a ‘telling’ case to highlight a problematic inconsistency between the results of international large-scale assessments (ILSAs) and other studies of Swedish students’ knowledge of linear equations. In this context, a ‘telling’ case, based on the scrutiny of appropriately chosen cases, is presented as a social science counter-example to the prevailing view that ILSAs’ assessments are not only valid but should underpin systemic reform. Our ‘telling’ case comparison of the different forms of study shows that Swedish students, in contrast with the summative assertions of the different ILSAs, have a secure and relational understanding of linear equations that persists into adulthood. We conclude with a cautionary message for the curriculum authorities.

The article proposes an “anal” reading of Witold Gombrowicz’s Ferdydurke from the perspective of the so‑called “anal turn” in the research on masculinities within the field of queer theories. The author presents an overview of theoretical perspectives, in which anality has been recognized as a suppressed component of male identity (e.g. Freud, Bataille, Kristeva, Deleuze and Guattari, Hocquenghem, Laporte). Masculinity seen from this angle is based on a radical shift of the foundation from a phallogocentric position to a more dispersed, non‑centralist, and thus more difficult to grasp, “anal” approach. In Gombrowicz’s work this change is best illustrated in the reflections on the subject of privacy. The subjectivity of the main character of Ferdydurke organises himself not around phallus but anus, and this new, radically shifted and dispersed subjectivity is called by Gombrowicz the private (or “upupiona”, “pampered”)masculinity, which reactivates the suppressed anality. The author analyses Ferdydurke also in the context of a peculiarly understood theory of “anal work,” in the light of which a literary work appears as an excrement and writing as excretion.

The difference between jargon, slang and specialized language often becomes blurred in the case of professional discourse. The reason is to be found in the very nature of this type of discourse, as well as in the socio-professional characteristics of its users. After carefully analyzing a significant body of oenological criticism written in Spanish by experts and wine-tasting enthusiasts, this article concludes that professional language may be regarded as a type of social dialect that functions as a badge of identity among its users. The use of such a social dialect thus aims to facilitate communication and strengthen bonds among experts and wine-tasting aficionados, while excluding those who are not in the know.
La frontière entre les jargons, les argots et la langue de spécialité parfois n’est pas évidente, surtout quand on observe les discours spécifiques des métiers. Cette contrainte relève non seulement de leur adaptation à la définition des caractéristiques de ces types de langages, mais aussi des discours où ils sont utilisés, des caractéristiques socioprofessionnelles des groupes qui les utilisent ainsi que du public auquel ils s’adressent. En me fondant sur un corpus espagnol d’expressions et de vocabulaire utilisés par des spécialistes et des amateurs de la dégustation du vin, notamment dans les médias, je me propose de faire une réflexion pour déterminer si ce corpus étudié peut être classé dans le domaine des argots ou des jargons ou s’il ne s’agit que d’un langage pseudolittéraire, dont la compréhension du sens est à la portée du grand public.

Przedstawiono główne błędy, niespójności i niedopowiedzenia zauważone w klasyfikacji gruntów według PN-EN ISO 14688:2006. W normie tej występują trzy grupy usterek: A – usterki, nieścisłości, niedopowiedzenia, które zauważono w wersji oryginalnej ISO; B – usterki wynikające z niedokładnego tłumaczenia; C – usterki występujące w załączniku krajowym. Zasadniczymi błędami w grupie A są: niespójność określenia nazwy gruntu według rozpoznania makroskopowego i na podstawie krzywej uziarnienia oraz nieprawidłowości w klasyfikacji stanów gruntów spoistych. Wykazana została niemożność prostego przejścia z nazwy gruntu według PN-86/B-02480 na nazwę gruntu według PN-EN ISO 14688:2006. Sytuacje powyższe zilustrowano przykładami graficznymi i liczbowymi. Ponadto omówiono wiele innych drobniejszych usterek i przedstawiono ogólną ocenę normy.
The paper presents main errors, incoherencies and understatements noticed in soil classification in conformity with the PN- EN LSO 14688:2006. Three groups of defects have been observed in the PN-EN ISO 14688:2006: A- defects, imprecision, understatements noticed in the original ISO version; B- defects resulted from inaccurate translation; C- defects observed in the Polish Appendix. The main errors of A group have been as follows: incoherencies in definition of soil name according to macroscopic analysis and on the basis of grain-size distribution curve as well as incorrectness in classification of states of cohesive soils. The impossibility of simple transfer from the soil name in conformity with the PN-86/B-02480 to the soil name in conformity with the PN-EN ISO 14688:2006 has been demonstrated. The adequate graphical and numerical examples have been included. In addition numerous minor defects have been discussed. The general assessment of the standard under reference has been presented.

The article analyzes the transformational potential of the #MeToo movement in terms of personal experience, institutional and social transformations, looking first of all at the dynamics the movement has created in theatre in Poland and around the world. The author unveils the systemic dimension of violence encoded in invisible and standardized relations of domination and subordination, inscribed in the two models which are still very common in Polish theatre: the “master and apprentice” model defining the position of a director and the “feudal” model visible in institutional relations. Looking at the Gardzienice case and the reactions of the public to the testimonies exposing violence, the author also mentions examples of institutional and systemic reactions to similar situations in British and Belgian theatre. In this way, she outlines possible directions for action in Polish theatre. She asks questions about the transformative and emancipatory potential of the #MeToo movement, emphasizing the necessity to consider an intersectional perspective, to build alliances and to practice promiscuous care.

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the academic discussion on the proper understanding of the notions of responsibility and innovation. In recent years, the field of Responsible Research and Innovation has grown rapidly among academia and received considerable attention. One area of focus concerns the proper understanding of the notion of the terms themselves. They are especially problematic in light of the critique that the subject has already received (cf. Blok, Lemmens 2015). This article provides an answer to that critique and proposes an alternative approach to the notions discussed. On the one hand, it outlines the so called ambivalued notion of innovation (cf. Kawalec 2015) and on the other, it presents a four-point characteristic of responsibility relevant to the field of research and innovation. In the text, the term responsibility should be understood as collective, future-oriented, socio-political, and values-oriented.

The focus of this article is on culture as a central concept of educational anthropology – a subdiscipline of anthropology that focuses on the fields of education and learning as key aspects of social life. It begins with an introduction into how culture has been criticially conceptualized in anthropology and ethnography and then illustrates how educational anthropologists have used the concepts of culture and cultural critique to analyze educational processes in diverse sociocultural settings. The author points out three primary areas in which anthropology of education enriches our understanding of education and learning: 1) investigations of diversity of educational practices in different sociocultural contexts; 2) critical examination of cultural practices and structures of inequality and exclusion vis-à-vis minority subjects in the educational process; 3) positioning of participatory research approaches and engagement as legitimate methodological and scholary standpoints. The article builts primarily on examples of texts that have been recently published in the Polish language in order to help situate the perspective of educational anthropology in Polish scholarly discourse and tradition.

This paper deals with the issue of definition of art and artwork in the sense of functionalist approach. It critically argues with the existing terms and meanings of artwork in that sense and presents them as insufficient and inadequate when speaking of modern art. Furthermore functionalism assumes that a great deal of artworks has a specific function, what we cannot say about a large number of contemporary artistic endeavors. Therefore it is being argued here that this approach, how popular it might have been in the past, must be replaced with a new paradigm of comprehension of esthetics.

The point of departure of this paper is Jürgen Habermas concept of knowledge constitutive interests and its further elaboration in the so-called reconstructive sciences. The reconstructive knowledge encompasses descriptive empirical statements, relative normative statements following from explication of cultural beliefs, and normative statements raising universal validity claims. The present paper discusses dystopia in the genre of horror on the basis of George A. Romero’s zombie films. Dystopia seems to be inextricably linked with the vision of the world in which the very structure of the society has been destroyed along with moral codes and the only remaining thing is the will to survive. In the Living Dead Trilogy Romero skilfully used the zombie apocalypse motif to portray both vices as virtues characteristic to American way of life. Moreover, in his motion pictures, he envisages what may be the implications of pos- sible dystopias arising from the ashes of destroyed human civilisation and, thus, gives the audiences, and the critics, an incredible resource for interpretation and further analysis. The methodology involves the paradigmatic analysis of the plots in order to show how the motif of zombie apocalypse is used to explore the notion of dystopia. Moreover, the mentioned analysis will also cover explicit, implicit and symptomatic meaning created by the analyzed films.

This paper seeks to emphasize the merits of comparative law as a critical legal enterprise. For this purpose, it first provides a brief overview of the various forms of critique that have been advocated in the field of comparative law. Second, it discusses four epistemological concerns as regards legal comparison that are meant to orient comparatists towards a critical mode of comparative reasoning. While most of the remarks comprised in this contribution apply to legal comparisons in general, a few observations shall be made with specific reference to the stakes and limits of legal comparisons in Central and Eastern Europe.

This paper is based on my Three Conference lectures about the essence of sustainable development, and the critical remarks about Polish literature devoted to this subject. In all publications examined by me authors made references to the Brundtland Report, and quoted definitions of sustainability, but they ignored the fact that this Report has been translated into Polish, and definitions are quite different. Without knowing the basic literature, and on the basis of merely their own intuition many authors gave interpre-tations which might be classified as fantasy. This is caused probably by the fact that the English adjective sustainable has been incorrectly translated as which means balanced.

In the essay, the author, Łukasz Ronduda, relates his own work as an artist, a film director, an art historian and curator, discussed in the light of the cinematic turn and the formation of common ground between cinema and contemporary art in both artistic and institutional sense. Ronduda looks closely at his two full-length feature films: Performer (2015) and Serce miłości (Heart of Love) (2017) and highlights their wider context. The first frame of reference spans from experimental films to contemporary full-length productions dedicated to wide audience. The second reference is his own work involving academic research, curating, writing a novel and the creation of a found footage film. In this self-presentation, Ronduda discloses his different attempts to find the right medium to speak about and analyze contemporary art. The full-length film turned out to be particularly effective medium in its ability to express the truth by means of fiction, placing him between creation and institutional structure. Film as a medium of interpreting art  seems to productively question fixed boundaries between research, criticism and art.
