This study examined the efficacy of using Quizlet, a popular online study tool, to develop L2 English vocabulary. A total of 9 Japanese university EFL students participated in the study. The learners studied Coxhead’s (2001) academic vocabulary list (AWL) via Quizlet over the course of 10 weeks. Results of the pre- and post-tests revealed that the learners were able to make statistically significant gains. Moreover, a questionnaire administered by the researcher indicated that the students had positive perceptions of Quizlet to study L2 vocabulary. Specifically, all three constructs studied – perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention to use Quizlet – had mean scores greater than 4 on a 5-point Likert scale, indicating a high-level of agreement. Based on these findings, the author supports the use of Quizlet in the EFL classroom.

Using new technologies in the academic field has become more and more visible in Poland in the recent years. In the past, digital learning resources were used as supplementary materials helping to support face-to-face instruction. Nowadays, we have the opportunity not only to apply ‘traditional’ methods but also to use more sophisticated approaches such as e-learning and blended learning (BL) to provide more effective and flexible ways of delivering knowledge to students. E-learning can become a very effective part of ‘blended learning’ where a part of the course content is delivered online. This article provides a brief overview of the basic issues that need to be taken into consideration while designing a blended learning course. More precisely, it focuses on the e-learning aspect of blended learning. It also aims at providing the reader with adopted solutions and encountered problems in the process of BL course design.

Finno-Ugric languages
Opis:
Morphologically rich languages always constitute a great challenge for language learners. The learner must be able to understand the information encoded in different word forms of the same root and to generate the correct word form to express certain syntactic functions and grammatical relations by conjugating a verb or declining a noun, an adjective or a pronoun. One way to improve one’s language skills is through exercises that focus on certain aspects of grammar. In this paper, a language learning application is presented that is intended to help learners of Finnish and Hungarian (with Hungarian and Finnish L1, respectively) acquire new vocabulary items, as well as practice some grammar aspects that according to surveys are considered difficult by learners of these languages with the other Finno-Ugric language being the learner’s native tongue, while alleviating the need to create these exercises manually. This application is a result of an on-going research project. In this research project, bilingual translation pairs and additional monolingual data were collected that can be utilized to build language learning exercises and an online bilingual dictionary with the help of automatic methods. Several linguistic patterns and rules were defined in order to automatically select example sentences that focus on a given part of the target language. These sentences were automatically annotated with the help of language processing tools. Due to the large size of the previously collected data sets, to date, only a subset of the analyzed sentences and the bilingual translation pairs has been manually evaluated. The results of this evaluation are discussed in this paper in order to estimate the precision of the methodology presented here. To ensure the precision of the information and the reliability of the application, only manually validated data sets are displayed. In this project, continuous data validation is planned, since it leads to more and more examples and vocabulary items that learners can benefit from.

This paper reports on a one-year longitudinal study that adopted a blended teaching approach based on designing and implementing an online EFL course to be used by Greek students aged 13-14 years old along their more traditional face-to-face lessons. The reason for creating a more dynamic learning environment aligned with the rest of the curriculum was to increase EFL learners’ engagement and motivation through their exposure to authentic online material and participation in a variety of reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks. Data analysis of pre- and post-achievement tests on English language reading comprehension performance along with students’ Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) attitude questionnaire showed that participants generally had a positive attitude toward CALL. At the same time, open online access technologies gave them the opportunity to further develop their EFL reading comprehension skills. The paper concludes by highlighting the fact that online class components were not designed to fit the online tools into a task-based EFL lesson, but rather served the learning objectives of the actual lesson based on a blended teaching approach.

Opis:
This article examines the relevance of modern technology for the development of learner autonomy in the process of learning English as a foreign language. Computer-assisted language learning and computer mediated communication (CMC) appear to be particularly conducive to fostering autonomous learning, as they naturally incorporate many elements of autonomy that give learners control over and responsibility for their own learning, such as choosing the materials used, managing their contact with various genres and types of interaction, often in authentic contexts, and evaluating their own progress, measured through their success in understanding and conveying meanings. However, providing access to language resources does not automatically lead to the development of autonomy, as much depends on other factors, such as the learners’ level or previous experience in learner training. The present study investigated whether advanced learners of English made use of out-of-class CMC engagement for the purpose of learning English autonomously. The results indicate that most of the participants were eager to use CMC opportunities to deliberately practice their English, although, quite naturally, leisure and social reasons for using CMC predominated. The expressed willingness to deliberately focus on practicing English during beyond-theclassroom meaning-oriented online interactions confirms the great potential of CMC as an autonomy enhancement tool.

This study investigated foreign language students’ perceptions about their Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based College English Course (CEC) in China. The research used a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire based on Simsek (2008). A factor analysis confirmed the construct validity of the questionnaire and 6 factors were delineated. 200 non-English majors who responded mentioned that ICT was well integrated into the CEC. They reported that the ICT-based CEC gave them a good environment for independent learning and they were more motivated to learn English as they had more opportunities to communicate, interact and cooperate with other students in English using authentic language in a variety of contexts. They found learning was more effective compared to the traditional learning environment; it provided freer learning environment, less restricted communication, more time flexibility and more self-scheduled study plan ensuring learner-centeredness and learning autonomy.

Opis:
In the last three decades, there has been a great interest in the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). As a newly flourished area, CALL borrowed or adapted theories from other disciplines, such as second language acquisition, linguistics, psychology and education; however, it is still questioned how these theories are modified, utilized and integrated into CALL research. In this study, the articles published in Computer Assisted Language Learning, System, British Journal of Educational Technology, and Language Learning and Technology between 1997 and 2018 were analyzed and the suggested theoretical frameworks for the research studies were examined. First, the articles without any explicit theoretical frameworks were eliminated. Second, the articles with specific theories were categorized and discussed in categories. At the end of the study, it was found that the prominent theoretical frameworks used in the last two decades were Social Constructivism, Sociocultural Theory, and Interactionist SLA in CALL studies. As for further studies, it can be claimed that these prominent theories will continue to be adopted by the researchers no matter what kind of new tools and platforms emerge for educational purposes. These findings might help researchers to better understand the past and the present situation of CALL research and to design further studies.

The purpose of the present cross-cultural study was to explore the relationships of second and foreign language teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in terms of their gender, age group, and educational level in two countries, Spain and Iran. The study was based on a sample of 318 language teachers and 307 language students in Iran and Spain. Data collection was carried out through two online questionnaires (108 items) for both teachers and students. To make a sound decision, the researchers decided to utilize the Delphi methodology, which was originally established in order to diagnose the beneficiary of technologies. In the data analysis phase, descriptive, t test and one-way ANOVA analyses were performed to find the answers of the research questions. The findings of the study revealed that there is no difference between the attitudes of Iranian and Spanish towards CALL in terms of gender, age and educational matter. Finally, pedagogical implications and recommendations for further research are presented.

The use of computational methods in comparative linguistics is growing in popularity. The increasing deployment of such methods draws into focus those areas in which they remain inadequate as well as those areas where classical approaches to language comparison are untransparent and inconsistent. In this paper we illustrate specific challenges which both computational and classical approaches encounter when studying South-East Asian languages. With the help of data from the Burmish language family we point to the challenges resulting from missing annotation standards and insufficient methods for analysis and we illustrate how to tackle these problems within a computer-assisted framework in which computational approaches are used to pre-analyse the data while linguists attend to the detailed analyses.

This article deals with the issue of assessment in the context of telecollaborative writing activities conducted on synchronous platforms such as Google Docs. Based on the research conducted by the author among secondary school students learning French, the attempt is made to discuss various areas of participants’ activity which can be subjected to assessment: text planning, text composition, project management through comments, linguistic corrections, etc. A conclusion is reached that the outcome of collaborative writing projects is greatly determined by how L2 students engage in the process of writing using Web-based word processing tools. In our opinion, it is impossible to consider the creation of a universal assessment grid suitable for all teaching contexts. Instead, a teacher willing to integrate such activities in his curriculum has to show a great deal of flexibility and adaptability.

The accessibility and multimodality of modern technologies make them particularly beneficial for pronunciation learning and teaching. Google Play Store offers more than 300 English pronunciation apps, many of which have received high ratings ranging from 4.5 to 4.9 out of 5 stars. Most of these apps are available for free. Due to their capacity for individualized, customized, self-paced “anytime – anywhere” learning and automated feedback on individual performance and progress, these apps are gaining increasing popularity among English learners worldwide. This paper reports on a small-scale study that examined five of the highest-rated free apps: Elsa Speak – Learning English Pronunciation by ELSA, English Pronunciation 2019 – Correct Pronunciation by Grounders, English Pronunciation by NVG Std, Pronounce It by Maclo Studios, and Quick Pronunciation Tool by Tiago English Tutor. Twenty first-year BA students of English Philology from the University of Łódź participated in the study by testing the five apps and answering questions related to their overall design, utility, potential for learning, teaching, and pronunciation assessment. The results of the study revealed the learners’ practical uses of the apps and their views on the value of using these apps for practising, teaching, and assessing English pronunciation skills.

Although a broad range of technologies may support the process of language learning, this paper investigates those technologies which are connected with the computer and Internet use in order to learn a foreign language. A term used to refer to the above-mentioned issue is Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). The paper presents results of a pilot study conducted of students of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) using a questionnaire containing a CALL component. This data collection instrument was especially designed for the purpose of the research. The main aim of the present article is to consider how to measure participants’ competences, attitudes and skills in the area of ICT (Information and Communication Technology).

The present study reports results from a series of computer experiments seeking to combine word-based Largest Chunk (LCh) segmentation and Agreement Groups (AG) sequence processing. The AG model is based on groups of similar utterances that enable combinatorial mapping of novel utterances. LCh segmentation is concerned with cognitive text segmentation, i.e. with detecting word boundaries in a sequence of linguistic symbols. Our observations are based on the text of Le petit prince (The little prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in three languages: French, English, and Hungarian. The data suggest that word-based LCh segmentation is not very efficient with respect to utterance boundaries, however, it can provide useful word combinations for AG processing. Typological differences between the languages are also reflected in the results.

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is one of the developing approaches that can assist to improve the language skills (reading, writing, listening) of students in English as a foreign language (EFL). CALL has been used to teach EFL learners through language drills or skills practice to stimulate discussion and interaction, or as a tool to improve writing and research. This study aims to point out the effects of DynEd on attitudes and language skills in EFL of middle school students in Turkey. The study contributes to the area of EFL learning and fosters students’ perceptions of EFL. The sample of this study, which utilized an ex-post facto design, recruited 136 middle school students as participants. According to the results, it can be said that, in addition to the conventional teaching environment, the use of DynEd significantly improved both the language skills and attitudes of the students in EFL. However, DynEd did not make any difference in students’ attitudes towards EFL according to grade level and gender. Moreover, students using DynEd have expressed positive views about DynEd.

The influence of computer-internet reality on the spelling norms of contemporary Polish The paper – in accordance with the title – concerns the influence of information technology on the orthographic system of the Polish language. The use of computers and the Internet not only resulted in the appearance of new words in Polish, but also contributed to the decision on how to write specific computerisms (allowing their polonized version), and even to the formulation of spelling rules that standardize the spelling of certain word series, such as the names of computer fonts, programming languages, programs and operating systems, or the names of Internet portals. However, not all issues concerning the writing of newly appearing in Polish language computerisms have already been considered by linguists. The normative solution requires, among other things, spelling of derivatives created on the basis of nouns ending in silent e, which have been adopted from English. This is why the author discusses the existing spelling habits of the users of contemporary Polish language and signals the facts which should be taken into account when formulating an appropriate orthographic rule.

In this paper the incidental language acquisition of 11-year-old Flemish children (n = 30) who have not received any formal English instruction is investigated. The study looks into children’s English proficiency and the learner characteristics that can be associated with it. In order to measure the children’s English proficiency, a receptive vocabulary test and a proficiency test (which measured listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills and writing skills) were used. Information about learner characteristics was gathered through two questionnaires (for children and parents). The results show that a significant proportion of the 11-year-olds can already perform tasks at the A2 level (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) without having had any formal instruction. The study confirms that children learn English from the input they receive through different media (especially gaming and computer use). Furthermore, the data reveal a strikingly positive attitude towards English and demonstrate that in some situations Flemish children prefer using English over their L1 with their peers.

Blogs can reinforce students’ learning and can be viewed as a cognitive, communication tool. This technological device used as a didactic tool can turn ordinary learning exercises into more interesting and engaging activities. Moreover, blogs can enrich students’ vocabulary and increase confidence in their learning abilities. The aim of this article is to investigate the use of blogs in learning and teaching to enhance English phraseology acquisition. Thus, empirical research consisting of students’ observations and a test among third form high school learners in Poland was carried out to assess the development of language related to the degree of phraseology acquisition.

This article presents theoretical concepts and methodological tools from multimodal (inter)action analysis that allow the reader to gain new insight into the study of discourse and interaction. The data for this article comes from a video ethnographic study (with emphasis on the video data) of 17 New Zealand families (inter)acting with family members via skype or facetime across the globe. In all, 84 social actors participated in the study, ranging in age from infant to 84 years old. The analysis part of the project, with data collected between December 2014 and December 2015, is ongoing. The data presented here was collected in December 2014 and has gone through various stages of analysis, ranging from general, intermediate to micro analysis. Using the various methodological tools and emphasising the notion of mediation, the article demonstrates how a New Zealand participant first pays focused attention to his engagement in the research project. He then performs a semantic/pragmatic means, indicating a shift in his focused attention. Here, it is demonstrated that a new focus builds up incrementally: As the participant begins to focus on the skype (inter)action with his sister and nieces, modal density increases and he establishes an emotive closeness. At this point, the technology that mediates the interaction is only a mundane aspect, taken for granted by the participants.

Forms of Address and their Meaning in Contrast in Polish and Russian LanguagesMany studies in contemporary linguistics focus on investigating politeness and rudeness in language. This paper, however, has not been intended as a contrastive study of the phenomena in question. Language politeness and rudeness are conveyed by means of expressions of politeness and rudeness which are perceived as entrenched and recurring in specific situations. These expressions convey the expected meaning of politeness and rudeness accepted in the model of social behaviour. If one uses the explicative method such expressions could be reduced to the following formula ‘I inform you that I follow a verbal conduct defined as polite’. Owing to the emergence of parallel corpora of particular languages, it is nowadays easier to collect data for research on forms of address as well as on expressions of politeness in the first half of the 21st century. Investigating the meaning of forms of address, which are part of linguistic repertoire used to express politeness and rudeness should be regarded as an interesting area of research. It is the consequence of the increasing importance of intercultural communication, expansion of international cooperation, and formation of new standards of interpersonal communication aimed at achieving mutual understanding without resorting to violence. It is worth mentioning that currently there are no bilingual dictionaries which would include practical rules for using forms of address. Moreover, dictionaries (especially bilingual ones) also do not list classifiers of politeness, which becomes a shortcoming as regards the purposes of translation and teaching foreign languages. The aforementioned problems apply to print as well as computer dictionaries. A reliable list of forms of address and their meaning may become helpful in intercultural communication. It would be also important to create a Contemporary Dictionary of Expressions of Politeness and Rudeness in a paper as well as a computer version.

Opis:
The paper presents a proposal to take into account the language comprehension paradigm in an attempt to improve the design methodology of human-computer dialogues. It is assumed that the user treats a system as a subject, i.e. perceives communication with the system as a kind of discourse and intuitively treats it as cognition of the world through a fixed image of objective linguistic signs. Due to the fact that every end-user of a computer system has an individual linguistic competence, thesaurus, habits, previous experiences, one can never guarantee that identical semantic references arise in a variety of audiences. The situation becomes more stable if one considers the communication aspect of comprehension on the basis of practice (familiarity of things). It may be expected that a qualified professional user will commit fewer errors, caused by a poor dialogue understanding while interacting with the system. Therefore, the main task of a designer is to speed up and facilitate the learning process, which can be achieved by running the process of constructive rational understanding.

The identity of a language being spoken has been tackled over the years via statistical models on audio samples. A drawback of these approaches is the unavailability of phonetically transcribed data for all languages. This work proposes an approach based on image classification that utilized image representations of audio samples. Our model used Neural Networks and deep learning algorithms to analyse and classify three languages. The input to our network is a Spectrogram that was processed through the networks to extract local visual and temporal features for language prediction. From the model, we achieved 95.56 % accuracy on the test samples from the 3 languages.

In the paper we present the current theoretical base of the J2FADD tool, which translates a Java program to a network of finite automata with discrite data (FADDs).The reason for building the tool is that to model check a concurrent program writ-ten in Java by means of the tools like Uppaal or VerICS (the module VerICS ), an automata model of the Java program must be build first. This is because these tools verify only systems modeled as networks of automata, in particular, systems modeled as networks of FADDs. We also make an attempt to evaluate the J2FADD tool by comparison of it with the two well known Java verification tools: Bandera and Java PathFinder.

A graphical user interface to programs for the determination of equilibrium parameters from physicochemical data (GOLEM) has been developed. The program converts input data written in a common chemical language into the algebraic form required by the programs that do actual computations. This includes translation of chemical equations into algebraic form and building up the history of the preparation of solutions. The program works on PC/DOS platforms and in the current version prepares the data for the program STOICHIO (J. Kostrowicki, A. Liwo, see Comput. Chem., vol.11, no.3, p.195, 1987) which determines the stoichiometry and equilibrium constants from physicochemical measurements.
