Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of spinosad on soil biochemical and microbiological properties. The experiment was carried out on sandy loam with Corg content 10.91 g·kg-l. Spinosad, as Spintor 240 SC was added into soil in dosages: a recommended field dosage, and fivefold, tenfold, and twenty-fivefold higher dosages. The amount of spinosad introduced into soil was between 12.55 and 313.75 g·kg-l. Moreover, soil samples without spinosad supplement were prepared as a reference. Respective Spintor 240 SC doses were converted into 1 kg soil, taking into account 10 cm depth. After application of insecticide water emulsions, soil moisture was brought to 60% maximum holding water capacity. The soil was thoroughly mixed and stored in tightly-closed polyethylene bags at 20 °C for a period 4 weeks. During the ex-periment dissipation of spinosad, soil enzymes (dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, urease) and number of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes were assayed. Obtained results showed, that dissipation of spinosad in soil was relatively fast – the DT50 of this insecticide was ranged between 1.11 and 2.21 days. Spinosad residues had different effects on soil microbiological and biochemical properties. However, over time the impact of this insecticide definitely decreased. This indicated that the use of spinosad in organic farming, particularly in the field dosage, does not pose a long-term threat to the soil environment.

Mat foundations are most typically used in locations featuring weak soils such as soft clays and silts, particularly when building in demanding geotechnical conditions. Because of their poor engineering characteristics and significant difficulties associated with workability, these soils are often removed or avoided by excavating down to a specific depth. However, if thick layers are present, their removal becomes unpractical, costly, and creates inconvenience during construction. To overcome this issue, various reinforcement strategies can be adopted. In this study, the use of stone columns under mat foundations was investigated via numerical modeling. Two scenarios were compared: one in which stone columns were installed without any soil removal and another in which a layer of soft ground was removed and the foundation was installed without any ground treatment. Numerical results showed the clear beneficial effect of stone columns, which can significantly reduce settlements even in the presence of a thick deformable soil layer.

Opis:
In this research, adsorption followed by filtration was used for removing heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, and Cr) from the polluted water. Three types of soils (silty, sandy and clay) and three types of marble powder (pure, impure, marble-granite mix) were used as an adsorbent. The soil and marble samples were collected from different regions of Oman. The maximum adsorption obtained was 96.01% for Zn using pure marble powder and the minimum adsorption obtained was 6.70% for Mn using impure marble powder. Through different soils, the maximum adsorption of 88.61% was achieved for Zn using clay and the lowest one is for Cr 16.51% using silty soil. The results suggest that among the marble powders, the pure ones show the maximum (96.01% for Zn) and marble-granite show the minimum (Mn 6.70%) adsorption performance. Among the adsorbents, Zn is the best adsorbate (96.01%) while the worst among the group is Mn, which merely adsorbed 6.70% with the selected adsorbents.

Opis:
The objective of the work was to evaluate, by using the micromorphometric method, the effects of reclamation on porosity of two different clay loam soils irrigated with saline-sodic waters. Soil samples of the Ap horizon were put in cylindrical containers and irrigated with 9 types of saline-sodic waters (3 levels of salinity combined with 3 levels of sodicity). After a 4-year period, correction treatments were initiated by addition of calcium sulphate and leaching until electrical conductivity and sodium absorption ratio values of the drainage water matched 3 dS m-1 and 9, respectively. After 2 years of correction treatments, undisturbed soil samples were taken from the surface layer and soil thin sections for porosity measurements. Both soils did not show critical macroporosity values (> 10%, below this threshold a soil is classified as compact). Nevertheless, the soils exhibiteda different behaviour: total porosity of the Pachic Haploxeroll soil was not affected by difference in water salinity and alkalinity; on the contrary, the Udertic Ustochrept soil showed a lower porosity associated with higher salt concentration in the irrigation waters. This may be due to the different iron and aluminium sesquioxides content and, as a consequence, a different effect on soil aggregate stability.

In a piled-raft foundation, the interaction between structural elements and soil continuum can be simulated very precisely by numerical modeling. In the present study, 3D finite element model has been used to examine the settlement, load-sharing, bending moment, and shear force behavior of piled-raft foundation on different soil profiles for different load configurations and pile-raft configurations (PRCs). The model incorporates the pile-to-soil and raft-to-soil interactions by means of interface elements. The effect of parameters such as pile spacing and raft thickness are also studied. For any soil profile, larger pile spacing is observed to be more efficient in reducing the average settlement and enhancing the load-sharing coefficient. The smaller pile spacing is observed to be efficient in reducing the differential settlement. For any soil profile, the behavior of piled-raft foundation is significantly affected by the PRCs and load configurations. Furthermore, the raft thickness has significant effect on settlement, bending moment, and shears force. Thus, the results of the present study can be used as guidelines for analyzing and designing large piled-raft foundation.

The investigations on the effects of biochar application in improving the physio-chemical properties of soil have been carried out in many studies; however, there are very few studies on the combined use of both biochar and clay-rich soil for poor nutrient soil reclamation. Therefore, this study demonstrates improved water retention and nutrient retention of sandy soil by using biochar and biochar combined with clay-rich soil. The experiments were conducted on a small scale (greenhouse) with nine different application rates of biochar and clay-rich soil were mixed and then cultivated peanut, along with the drip irrigation technique using field moisture limit (about 70-80%) was applied under the condition of ensuring a sufficient supply of NPK for plant’s growth. The results showed that at the rates from 10.0-15.0% (w/w) clay-rich soil mixed with from 0.5-1.5% (w/w) of biochar applied to the tested sandy soil resulted in the positive effects on soil water holding, bulk density, permeability, pH, CEC, OM, total N, total P and peanut yield. The physical and chemical characteristics of the tested sandy soil have been improved by time and the application rate of 10.0% clay-rich soil and 0.5% biochar had the highest efficiency of pod fresh weight and pod dry weight during three studied seasons.

Opis:
This paper deals with the structural factors affecting shrinkage phenomena. Seventy eight soil samples were tested, including: Neogene (Mio-Pliocene) clays, glacial tills, clayey alluvial soils, bentonite, illitic clay and kaolinite. Destructed soils (remoulded samples) were compared with undisturbed soils (NNS). Analysis of shrinkage curves showed that the most hydrophilic clays and well-graded soils have the lowest void ratio and shrinkage limit. Shrinkage curves ofsilty and sandy soils are relatively plane with poorly differentiated shrinkage stages. For Neogene clays, shrinkage curves of remoulded samples are similar to the undisturbed ones. Both series of samples yielded similar final void ratio and shrinkage limit values. For alluvial soils and glacial tills, remoulded samples yielded a lower void ratio and higher shrinkage limit values than NNS samples. The results obtained showed that the soil fabric (natural preserved versus disturbed) does not influence shrinkage of Neogene clays while affects significantly shrinkage of alluvial soils and glacial tills. The statistical analysis revealed that there was no correlation between shrinkage limit and clay content or plastic index. A linear rela¬tionship was found between shrinkage limit and void ratio for clays as well as remoulded samples.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań parametrów skurczalności oznaczonych wg norm polskiej PN-88/B-04481 i brytyjskiej BS1377: Part 2: 1990: 4.3 oraz wg wzoru korelacyjnego Krabbego z 1958 (Schultze, Muhs, 1967). Najwyższe wartości granicy skurczalności i skurczu objętościowego (Vs i Vp) wykazały kolejno: iły mioplioceńskie > mady > gliny lodowcowe. Wartości granicy skurczalności wg normy brytyjskiej są niższe niż wg normy polskiej, a różnica wynosi ok. 1–4%. Granica skurczalności obliczona wg Krabbego znacznie odbiega i nie wykazuje jednolitej tendencji zróżnicowania w stosunku do pozostałych metod. Nie stwierdzono wiążących zależności funkcyjnych pomiędzy granicą skurczalności a zawartością frakcji iłowej oraz wskaźnikiem plastyczności. Stwierdzono zależności liniowe o wysokim współczynniku korelacji pomiędzy skurczem objętościowym (Vs i Vp) a wilgotnością gruntu w0, przedziałem skurczu, wskaźnikiem plastyczności (Ip) i zawartością frakcji iłowej.
The article presents the results of shrinkage parameters research according to Polish standard PN-88B-04481, British standard BS1377: Part 2: 1990: 6.3 and Krabbe's equation from 1958 (Schultze, Muhs, 1967). Mio-Pliocene clays, glacial tills and alluvial soils were tested, as the most typical subsoils in Poland. Shrinkage limit w/s, volumetric shrinkage Vs, relative volumetric shrinkage Vp were determined and correlated with soils properties such as moisture content, shrinkage range, plasticity index and clay content. No significant relationships between shrinkage limit and clay content or plasticity index were found. Linear regression of high correlation coefficient was found between volumetric shrinkage Vs, Vp and moisture content, shrinkage range, plasticity index, clay content . However, the most important result of the analyses was the determination of the relationship between volumetric shrinkage Vp and moisture content (w/o) and plasticity index (Ip) — parameters commonly tested in geological engineering practice: Vp = 0,629w/o + 0,191Ip-1,659 ± 3,166; (R = 0,968).

Contribution of clay mineral phase (<2 um) and organic matter to the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of two clayey soils (gleyic black earths from Gniew) was investigated. The XRD analysis showed dominance of illite and mixed laver illite/smectite as well as the presence of smectite, chlorite and trace of kaolinite in the clay fraction of studied soils. CEC of the soils ranged between 22.08-32.64 cmol(+)/kg. After removal of organic matter with 30% H2O2, CEC the above values decreased significantly. However, the CEC of organic and inorganic components is not an additive. This may be explained by the formation of organo-mineral complexes, which might lower the CEC of the soil as a whole.

Opis:
A method for the experimental determination of the amount of clay dispersed from soil into water is described. The method was evaluated using soil samples from agricultural fields in 18 locations in Poland. Soil particle size distributions, contents of organic matter and exchangeable cations were measured by standard methods. Sub-samples were placed in distilled water and were subjected to four different energy inputs obtained by different numbers of inversions (end-over-end movements). The amounts of clay that dispersed into suspension were measured by light scattering (turbidimetry). An empirical equation was developed that provided an approximate fit to the experimental data for turbidity as a function of number of inversions. It is suggested that extrapolation of the fitted equation to zero inversions enables the amount of spontaneously-dispersed clay to be estimated. This method introduces the possibility of replacing the existing subjective, qualitative method of determining spontaneously-dispersed clay with a quantitative, objective method. Even though the disper-sed clay is measured under saturated conditions, soil samples retaina ‘memory’ of the water contents at which they have been stored.

Opis:
The soil-water characteristic curve for a soil is defined as the relationship between water content and suction for the soil. It can be used to estimate various parameters which describe unsaturated soil behaviour. The paper presents the results of investigation of cohesive soils from the Warsaw area. As a result of the comprehensive studies the fundamental relationship between the soil suction and water content for mio-pliocene clay from Stegny was established. Using Fredlund and Xing (1994) equation the best-fit curves for experimental data are presented.

This paper discusses two different approaches to microanalysis of the soil medium. It presents testing results collected by electromicroscopy, which requires special sample preparation, and a non-destructive method, requiring no sample preparation and using a computer-assisted tomograph. The paper presents: • Applicability of microstructure analyses and chemical microanalysis in the determination of structural damage incurred in the historical time in relation to the effect of contemporary abiotic events; • Application of a standard medical computer-assisted tomograph in qualitative assessment of structure and observations of mechanisms of failure in the cement/peat soil composite. Investigations concerning the applicability of computed tomography in soil micromechanics are demonstrative in character and the presented conclusions suggest further directions for research.

Opis:
Worldwide, there is a growing interest in the use of vi-sible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) to characterise soils. The method is largely used in the agricultural (foods and cereals) sector but is only in the research phase for soil analysis despite the fact that it is a suitable tool for precision agriculture. A quick search at the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection con-firmed that the method, although very popular in different fields of research, is still new within soils studies in Poland. Furthermo-re, the method only occasionally involved arable soils. This paper briefly describes how VIS-NIRS is used in Poland and demon-strates with a few examples the main advantages of the method over classical analytical method for mineral soil analysis. As an illustration of the method potential, soil organic carbon (SOC) and clay content were predicted using partial least-square (PLS) regression at field and national scale. The models were robust at field scale and revealed a high agreement between measured and predicted values with e.g. r2 = 0.65 and RMSEv = 0.11% for SOC. Prediction results at national scale are promising but less robust. VIS-NIRS is a suitable technique to estimate several soil proper-ties at different scales and at a relatively low cost.

Opis:
The main objective was to evaluate to what extent subsoil compaction on an arable clay soil (Stagnosol (Drainic)) may be alleviated after 5 years under the climate conditions in South-East Norway. Therefore, field plots which had been ploughed and under minimum tillage were compacted through wheel impact (10x) with a 6.6 Mg wheel load. Samples were taken from the ‘compacted’ and ‘non-compacted reference’ treatments at depths of 40 and 60 cm both before and directly after compaction and again 5 years later. The soil physical parameters revealed that pre-compression stress, bulk density, air capacity, air conductivity and saturated hydraulic conductivity at depths of 40 and 60 cm were impaired by compaction, especially under ploughed. After 5 years, bulk density and pre-compression stress remained almost unchanged, while air capacity, air conductivity and saturated hydraulic conductivity had increased at both the 40 and 60 cm depth on both plots as compared to the compacted state and to R for the most part, indicating the recovery of the soil structure in the subsoil. The compaction status evaluated by the ‘compaction verification tool’ indicates the relative reduction of ‘harmful soil compaction’ (after wheel impact) with a change towards ‘slightly harmful compaction’ for the most part with an as yet limited saturated hydraulic conductivity at both depths after 5 years.

Opis:
The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of adding thermally treated clay on some engineering properties of the untreated expansive clayey soil. Three expansive clayey soil samples obtained from three different sites in the south of Syria have been investigated. They were thermally treated up to three different levels (450°C, 650°C and 850°C) for 3 hours. Three replacement levels of thermally treated clay were used, i.e. 0%, 10% and 20%. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) technique has been used to detect the crystalline and glassy phase in the clayey samples before and after the thermal treatment. Pozzolanic activity of the thermally treated clayey soil has been studied using the modified Chapelle test and the mechanical strength test at each of the temperature levels. Atterberg limits, compaction, free swell, swelling pressure and linear shrinkage have particularly been investigated. Test results revealed the positive effect of thermally treated clay when added to the natural soil. Plasticity index (PI) was reduced by about 60% when 20% thermally treated clay was added to the natural soil. In addition, 6% lime was added to further investigate the combined effect of lime and calcined clay on the properties of the clayey expansive soil. All investigated properties were significantly improved when 20% thermally treated soil and 6% lime were added together. For instance, swelling pressure and linear shrinkage values were reduced to less than 15% or even much less when compared with those of the natural soil. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energydispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis were employed as well.

The research results of the consolidation coefficient cv for five selected clay samples from Lower Silesia were presented. The values of consolidation coefficient cv were estimated from oedometer tests conducted at different consolidation loads, lower than in situ vertical virgin stress. It was found that the cv values increased proportional to overconsolidation ratio. The inversely correlation between value of cv and specific surface area St and the free swelling FS was observed.

Opis:
This study investigated the impact of monovalent cations on clay dispersion, aggregate stability, soil pore size distribution, and saturated hydraulic conductivity on agricultural soil in Iran. The soil was incubated with treatment solutions containing different concentrations (0-54.4 mmol l-1) of potassium and sodium cations. The treatment solutions included two levels of electrical conductivity (EC=3 or 6 dS m-1) and six K:Na ratios per electrical conductivity level. At both electrical conductivity levels, spontaneously dispersible clay increased with increasing K concentration, and with increasing K:Na ratio. A negative linear relationship between percentage of water-stable aggregates and spontaneously dispersible clay was observed. Clay dispersion generally reduced the mean pore size, presumably due to clogging of pores, resulting in increased water retention. At both electrical conductivity levels, hydraulic conductivity increased with increasing exchangeable potassium percentage at low exchangeable potassium percentage values, but decreased with further increases in exchangeable potassium percentage at higher exchangeable potassium percentage. This is in agreement with earlier studies, but seems in conflict with our data showing increasing spontaneously dispersible clay with increasing exchangeable potassium percentage. Our findings show that clay dispersion increased with increasing K concentration and increasing K:Na ratio, demonstrating that K can have negative impacts on soil structure.

Several successful applications of the hypoplastic models would not be possible without a reliable and simple calibration procedure of the model parameters. The procedure utilizing standard properties of grain assemblies is well-suited for sands and is briefly outlined here. However, there are limits for the application of this approach for other soils. This is demonstrated for a coarse-grained limestone rockfill and a fined-grained loess. Whereas the parameter determination of the limestone rockfill is mainly limited by the available laboratory equipment, the calibration procedure must be significantly modified for the loess soil. Finally, a serious problem concerning the application of the hypoplastic model for soils with low friction angles is discussed. It is shown that in this case the ratio of incremental stiffness moduli in triaxial and isotropic compression is unrealistically low.

The object of studies was the composition of clay minerals in post-mining groundsof the Konin Brown Coal Mine as well as of soils developing from this parent material under the influence of farming reclamation. The per-formed investigations revealed that the main clay minerals in the analysed materials included: smectite and illite with some other mixed-package minerals such as: illite-smectite, kaolinite, chlorite, calcite, quartz and feldspar. This composition is similar to clay minerals found in boulder clay of the Warta River glaciation. It is a formation which constitutes the main constituent of post-mining grounds. The soil developing from post-mining grounds contains greater quantities of organic matter which, in addition, is more associated with clay minerals.

Soil moisture temporal variations play a key role in the hydrological processes occurring in the unsaturated zone, which are critical for annual crop yields. The electrical resistivity tomography technique was applied in a field cultivated with cotton in northern Greece, thereby investigating its potential to serve as a reliable soil moisture-monitoring tool for precision irrigation in highly heterogeneous, clay-rich soils. Repeated surface resistivity measurements were made along two plant lines combined with soil water content measurements conducted with a reference gravimetric method and an electromagnetic sensor. Resistivity pseudo-sections were inverted to produce 2D resistivity models, and time-lapse inversion algorithms were also used, to better calculate the temporal changes in subsurface soil resistivity. The results showed clear spatial and temporal changes in resistivity transects in accordance with rainfall/irrigation and dry periods. The soil resistivity data exhibited a power model relationship with gravimetric soil moisture point measurements and a fair correlation with electromagnetic sensor profiles.

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using natural and bacteria-modified Erzurum clayey soil with Methylobacterium extorquens as an alternative to high cost commercial adsorbent materials for the removal of copper from aqueous solution. The copper concentrations in the samples of the polluted river water and CuCl2 solutions treated by the natural and bacteria-modified Erzurum clayey soil (ECS) have been determined by spectrophotometric method. Firstly, the surface of ECS was modified with M. extorquens and surface functionality was increased. Then, the adsorption of Cu (II) from solution phases was studied with respect to varying metal concentration, pH, and temperature and agitation time. The maximum adsorption of Cu (II) for natural and bacteria-modified Erzurum clayey soil was observed at pH: 5.0. At different copper concentrations, copper adsorption analysis was performed on 1 g using clay soil or modified clay soil. Maximum adsorption of Cu (II) was obtained as 45.7 and 48.1 mg g-1 at initial concentration (50 mg/50 mL) and optimal conditions by natural and bacteria-modified clay soil, respectively. The copper concentration was decreased in the substantial amount of the leachates solutions of natural and bacteria-modified clay soil. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to describe the adsorption behavior of Cu (II) ions. The results showed that modified clay soil had a high level of adsorption capacity for copper ion. The various thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° were analyzed to observe the nature of adsorption. The structural properties of the natural and bacteria-modified-ECS have been characterized by SEM, FTIR and XRD techniques. Consequently, it was concluded that the bacteria-modified clay soil could be successfully used for the removal of the copper ions from the aqueous solutions.

The suitability of using lateritic clays from Aviele and Igarra has been investigated both in the Northern part of Edo state, Nigeria as liners of an engineered landfill and to adsorb metals in leachates. Geotechnical characteristics, pH, and elemental composition for the lateritic clay samples were determined. The chemical composition, pH, total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity were determined for leachates collected from two dumpsites. The capacities of the lateritic clay soils to adsorb heavy metals in the leachates were determined using the batch equilibrium adsorption technique. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soils were found to be sufficient to resist damage. By both the standard and modified Proctor compaction tests, it was found that the coefficients of permeability for the soil samples were lower than 1×10–9 m/s that is widely recommended for soils that are to be used as landfill liners. Pb2+, Zn2+ and Cr2+ were the heavy metals in the leachates. The sorption selectivity order for tested soils depended on the soil type and properties.

These soils are potentially fine material to construct barriers for insulating of contaminations. The results of paste samples tests are compared with behavior of non disturbed structure. The difference of natural and artificial formed structure affect on physical properties and permeability behavior too. The continuous loading consolidation tests let to obtain effective seepage of pore water in short time but head gradient is higher than in natural conditions. It caused contraction effects and may decrease the permeability, when pore water pressure is not dissipate. The consolidation stress and pore water pressure is mainly factor of tests results variability. Differences between permeability of samples formed from paste and natural structure samples may depend on mineral composition and compaction of paste. Consolidation tests let quickly evaluate permeability of cohesive soil with respect for the different factors considered in optional barriers designs.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the soil aggregation and water aggre-gate stability of Luvisols developed from moraine loams. The soils were classified in various complexes of agricultural suitability: very good wheat (first), good wheat (second) and deficient wheat (third). Soil samples were taken from Ap horizons (from the depth of 0-25 cm) and from Et, Bt and C genetic horizons (from the depth of 25-50 cm, 50-75 cm i 75-100 cm) after the harvest of winter wheat. The Ap horizons of investigated soils were characterised by a higher content of air-dry ag-gregates in the 0.25-10 mm diameter range (inclusive of aggregates of 1-5 mm), a lower content of clods >10 mm and a higher content of water-stable soil aggregates in the 0.25-10 mm diameter class, especially 1-10 mm, than the subsoil. The aggregate-size distribution in Ap horizons of soils classified in the first complex was estimated as favourable, and in Ap horizons of soils classified in the second and third complexes was estimated as medium. The aggregate-size distribution in the subsoil was estimated mostly as medium. Aggregate water stability in Ap horizons of soils classified in the first and second complexes was estimated as favourable, and in Ap horizon of soils classified in the third complex was estimated as medium. Aggregate water stability in Et, Bt, BC and C hori-zons was classified as medium or weak.

Opis:
Soil mixtures are simple and cheap solutions for bettering of soils in building engineering. They also can be used in constructing of sealing beds of landfills. Soils that may be used for mineral sealing beds of landfills must meet both official regulations and criteria elaborated by experienced researchers. Experiments showed, that minor additions of clay (or selected clay minerals) to sand can seal a loose soil without any drop in its strength abilities. Such a soil mixture is very well compactable and achieves low values of porosity, hence, low values of permeability.

Twelve samples, collected from four pedons of cultivated soils (black earths) were analyzed by sequential extraction to characterize the role of free iron oxides in the association of lead and cadmium. Amounts of lead and cadmium retained varied from 11 to 89.3% of the total Pb and from 4.8 to 48.7% of the total Cd. Metals associated with amorphous Fe oxides are at least ten times higher than with crystalline Fe forms. Under the existing soil conditions (high pH and CaCO3 content) free iron oxides are components of great importance in the Pb and Cd binding process. However, the results may indicate a stronger association of Pb than Cd with iron oxides in the studied black earths.

Opis:
In this work, a series of unconfined compression tests at different water contents were performed to investigate the mechanical behaviour of clay–sand mixtures compacted in standard Proctor conditions. For studying the effect of water content and suction on unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and on strain secant modulus (E50 modulus) of these mixtures, drying–wetting paths were defined by measuring the soil–water characteristic curves (SWCCs) using osmotic and salt solution techniques and filter paper method. The results highlighted that an increase in sand content of the mixture leads to an increase in the maximum dry densities and a decrease in the optimum water content of the materials. However, at the given state, when clay is mixed with 25% of sand, the UCS and E50 modulus increase to 37% and 70%, respectively, compared to those of clayey samples. But when clay is mixed with 50% of sand, the UCS and E50 modulus decrease to 38% and 46%, respectively, compared to those of clayey samples. The results also indicate that the UCS and E50 increase with a decrease in the water content and an increase in suction, irrespective of the sand content.

Compressibility index Cc next to the swelling index Cs and oedometric modulus Eoed is the basic parameter characterizing the soil compressibility. This parameter is widely used in the prediction of ground settlement. In the case of fine-grained soil, determination of Cc in laboratory test is time-consuming and expensive. For this reason, the correlation between Cc and basic value of geotechnical parameters of soils, are searched. The most widely known equation used for determination of Cc for clay is Skempton's equation, allowing to determine the index value on the basis of liquid limit wr The analysis showed that this equation can not apply in the case of a overconsolidated Poznan clays. It was found that the better the correlation is obtained by making the value of the index Cc from the initial soil porosity e0.

Opis:
In the present work problems related to surface free energy of different agricultural materials such as clay minerals, mineral soils, organic soils and forest litter were considered. Methodical investigations of surface free energy determination as well as fundamental investigations connected with the influence of the surface cations and organic substance on the wettability, free energy and interaction forces between clay minerals and soil particles were undertaken. The interaction forces between clay minerals and soil particles perform a fundamental role in aggregation, flocculation and forming of solids structure. In case of solids the surface free energy can be determined indirectly for example from the measured contact angles or from the adsorption values (by determination of film pressure jt) with appropriate theoretical assumptions. Such methods were applied in this paper to determine surface free energy components for clay minerals and soils. Because of difficulties in contact angle measurements by sessile drop method (especially for organic soils and humus) thin layer wicking or thin column wicking technique were applied. The investigations of penetration rates of water and organic liquids carried out for clay minerals and their mono ionic forms showed the close dependence between the kind of mineral and surface cation. The linear dependence of penetration rates was obtained at the lowest penetration times for bentonite and the highest for kaolin. The kind and properties (e.g. radius of hydrated ions) play in this case an important role. The empiric series of wettability, depending on clay mineral and surface cation were determined experimentally. Similar measurements were performed for clay minerals with increasing additions of humic acid and for different soils. On the basis of the measurements the surface free energy components apolar and polar (electron-acceptor and electron-donor) were calculated and correlated with the kind of clay mineral, surface cation and humic acid content. The investigations for soils show that the penetration times depend on the soil samples. Contact angle values for investigated samples were also calculated. From the water vapour adsorption measurements on the surfaces of modified clay minerals and soils the water film pressure values were calculated for one or three monolayers and compared with the work of adhesion and immersion. For soil materials surface free energy had real influence on structure formation or its changes. The organic matter and surface cations had an important role in creation of soil structure.

Well crystalized muscovite was treated with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide of various concentration between 1.0 and 0.001 mol/dm3.From water vapor adsorption and de sorption isotherms adsorption energy distribution functions, fractal dimensions and pore size distribution functions were evaluated. From back-titration curves the apparent surface dissociation constant distribution functions were calculated. The alteration of muscovite surface heterogeneous character was concluded from the above data, which were most pronounced at the highest concentrations of the reagents used. In the acidic and alkaline regions, the surface changes were different.

Opis:
This paper presents the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of microstructures of Neogene clays from Warsaw, Poland. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) studies were used for the microstructural analysis of natural clays and clay pastes. Qualitative microstructural changes were observed: from a honeycomb microstructure for the initial clay paste to a turbulent microstructure for the dried paste. It was also noticed that water loss caused by the increase of the suction pressure had a significant impact on the microstructural transformations. Significant changes in the quantitative values of the pore space parameters were also observed. Increase of suction pressure and water loss caused a decrease in porosity and changes in the values of morphometric parameters, such as pore distribution; for example, a significant increase of the number of pores of 0−10 μm size and changes in the geometric parameters of the pore space were noticed with the increase of suction pressure. The pore space with larger isometric pores was modified into a pore space with the dominance of small anisometric and fissure-like pores. The increased degree of anisotropy from a poorly-oriented to a highly-oriented microstructure was also observed. After rapid shrinkage the reduction in the number of pores, maximum pore diameter, and total pore perimeter was recorded. The process of rapid water loss induced the closure of very small pores. A similar effect was observed during the increase of the suction pressure, where the closure of pore space of the clay pastes was observed very clearly.

The purpose of his paper is presentation of differences in static calculation and design of structures depending on design assumptions. As an example a multi-level subterranean car park in Poznań where the soil consisted of Pliocene clay is presented. Static calculations were performed for various soil parameters and selected load cases. These calculations showed a significant sensibility of design process of cavity walls to the adopted values of soil parameters. Taking into account the real values of cohesion c/u and the angle of internal friction phi/u - much higher than the values from codes, allowed for significant decrease of anchoring length of cavity walls in the soil. The influence of the soil parameters on the ultimate and serviceability limit states of the cavity wall itself was much smaller. It must be pointed out the several existing objects founded on this type of soil confirm the correctness of the suggested approach and existence of significant discrepancy between the real and code values of parameters for the Pliocene clay (Poznań clay).

The paper presents a simplified methodology for the analysis of static building construction longwall when within the horizontal projection of the foundation can find a local threshold or a fault area. It shows the formulation of the basic assumptions of work and provides theoretical considerations leading to the determination of additional load rigid structure located above the gap. Then formulated a way that the separation of the designated load spatial body of the building on each side of the building. The results were confronted with the results of the analyzes of numerical aspects of behavior of buildings on the emerging facet of land in the form of a threshold. Analyzed the structures of rigid construction, constructed in accordance with the principles set out in the guidelines. The analysis was performed by MES with the program Abaqus and the Robot program. It adopted with the assumption that the fault coverage will not exceed the defined work called. critical distance. In the construction of the model surface mining in addition to the model of linear-elastic and model Winkler's used for substrates simplest models of the material elastic-plastic - model of the surface of plasticity in the form of a condition Coulomb-Mohr and Drucker-Prager, and model the mechanics of the critical state of Modified-Cam-Clay.
Analizie poddano budowle o konstrukcji sztywnej, skonstruowane zgodnie z zasadami podanymi w wytycznych.
