Opis:
This article is an attempt to characterise diaries kept by children who were witnesses or victims of the Holocaust: Renia Knoll, Rutka Laskier, Dawid Rubinowicz, Dawid Sierakowiak and Anne Frank. The analysis of the texts made it possible not only to present their narrative diversity but above all to show the common grounds of children’s relations, which can be regarded as a kind of topos of children’s intimist experience of the Holocaust. According to the author, the theme of the Holocaust present in the analysed texts is also used in contemporary children’s literature, the authors of which deal with the issue of the Holocaust by styling stories into children’s war diaries. The author illustrates the relationship between authentic diaries and their stylisation, referring to the award-winning PamiętnikBlumki by Iwona Chmielewska, published in 2011

Opis:
After Ukraine’s independence in 1991 Ukrainian children got wider access to the translations of the works of prominent world writers for children. The classic literature of the world, aiming to mediate the children’s feelings for beauty and literary aesthetic, became an integral part of the Ukrainian educational system. Thanks to the increase of famous children’s books written in modern Ukraine, Ukraine is now experiencing the growth of a new generation of more intelligent and capable citizens free from communism ideology, able to integrate and positively contribute to the modern multicultural world. However “children and war” is now again among the painful topics in modern Ukrainian society but not new in history and literature. There are no wars, initiated by Ukrainians. The Famine of Ukrainians in the East of Ukraine by Russians, the Second World War, physical genocide of Ukrainian families and their children for the whole century even also just for the Ukrainian language saved Pain and Distrust in the generation memory of Ukrainians. But the aim of this survey of the Ukrainian literature for children and youth is to show the developing processes in the society on the basics of the main ideas, topics, directions and values during the XX-XXI centuries, beginning since the end of the XIX century by such prominent writer like Ivan Franko.

The Good Death of a Christian Through the Eyes of Sophie de Ségur (1799–1874): This paper attempts to analyse how Sophie de Ségur (1799–1874) performed the mission of spreading the Catholic faith through children’s literature. The biography of this Russian woman who converted to Catholicism is presented at the beginning, together with her connections with the Ultramontane environment being active in nineteenth-century France. This is to prove that de Ségur’s writing activities were part of a planned programme aimed at shaping society in the spirit of Catholicism. The analysis is carried out on the examples of how she presented scenes of a good Catholic death in three novels for children: "Les vacances, Jean qui grogne et Jean qui rit and La sœur Gribouille". The study is divided into three parts: the death of the mother, the death of the child, and the death of the sinner, according to the criterion whose death was described. It is shown that in de Ségur’s perspective, a good death is a reward for a good and pious life. The social aspect of death and good preparation for it are also important.

How are the two literatures – the classic, the heritage, the scholarly versus the children’s literature, the overly easy editorial productions – much less opposed in reality than one might think? How can a real complementarity exist between literatures which will perhaps never be patrimonial but which can become school and the “great” literature? We will show how the reading of mythographic works seeks to design a teaching which makes the encounter with the book a triple opportunity for enrichment: to be moved, to escape, to learn. We will show how the reading of mythographic works seeks to design a teaching which makes the encounter with the book a triple opportunity for enrichment: to be moved, to escape, to learn. By taking into account the requirements of the time and the need for the school not to operate apart from opinions and practices, by a literature and a reading which accept to be useful for something, the French course must make sense by offering a new culture which is first and foremost a culture of oneself. It is first of all to show a living classical literature.

The assumptions of the humanistic philosophy of love will be confront-ed with the (pre-)school and school practice preparing children to meet the Other.

The article encourages reflection on the role of Polish language education in the face of contemporary challenges. One of them is the expansion of populism (e.g. in politics, in the media, in the way of thinking about education) and the accompanying disinformation campaigns, propaganda or replacing information analysis with emotional opinions. We are also in Poland witnessing this disturbing process, which threatens the foundations of democracy. That is why teaching a critical attitude towards theses expressed in public discourse is so important. The article shows how access to reliable information can contribute to forming such an attitude. The author also suggests that the interpretation of modern children’s literature may be used to expose populist lies, harmful simplifications, and manipulation of facts; it can also successfully support the development of mature civic awareness even among very young students. The point of reference in this case is the problem of attitude towards refugees.

The paper discusses children’s literature as a construction (re)produced by adults. The author refers to several questions raised about the meaning of this notion and its relationships with so-called adult literature, presents main scholarly theories on it, and shows that western image of this category of books relies on constructions of childhood. It is indicated that the dominant western construction of children’s literature as a “safe and useful land of immaturity” bases on two discourses, which organize the ways of understanding childhood in this cultural circle (not forgetting about particular national variants): the Romantic discourse and the discourse of tabula rasa. From this perspective, children’s literature can be seen as a result of adult fantasies, assumptions, desires, and rules. This construction, as the author argues, is being reproduced by children’s stories, which may repeat it in various modalities or, paradoxically, negate it.

Opis:
This article discusses a representation of the relationship between a child and a big city in American and European children’s and teens’ literature. In many books, a child or a teen is portrayed as a contemporary flâneur, an idle city walker. Following Eric Tribunella’s adaptation of Walter Benjamin’s definition of a flâneur to children, the article explores various book representations of the big cities as they are seen through the eyes of a child. The city dweller perceives her environment as an exciting, even though sometimes threatening, place. Acting as a flâneur and a voyeur, a child develops a complicated relationship with the streets and museums of the big city. Enormous walking (and transportation) possibilities of the city are very attractive for youngsters. The hidden wonders of the big city mesmerize the curious minds of children and teens, making them natural voyeurs. Children are capable of combining the aimless gaze of a flâneur with the precise attention of a voyeur. Often, a city becomes one of the very important characters in a book, and a child forms a partnership with the city. In spite of the notion of adults that the city is a dangerous place for children, children immensely enjoy the city spaces, streets, parks, and museums. Museums particularly work as symbolical places of safety and exploration. Contemporary children and teenagers enjoy even more freedom to be city flâneurs and voyeurs due to the newly acquired speed of movement, including the use of bikes, scooters, and public transportation. With the main focus on New York City as one of the most striking example of a big city in children’s books, the article also discusses the literary representations of other megalopolises and large cities, such as Moscow and Minsk.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to discuss and analyse a fairy tale The Lilac Forest (Liliowy Bór, Krakow 2009) by Adam Szafraniec – a writer, poet, composer, founder of the artistic group The Fairy Band (Baśniowa Kapela) and the Publishing house White Boat (Biała Łódka). This multidimensional story for the youngest readers was presented in the article in the context of other achievements of the author, whose work is characterized by an explicit syncretism of the epics, poetry, and drama. The inspiration to write The Lilac Forest was found in the history of Brian Chlebowski (1998–2005) – a six-year-old boy, who had saved his father and tens residents of one house in Lodz from death in flames. The educational significance of the book is emphasized by the complementary music album by Adam Szafraniec, Friends of the Lilac Forest (Przyjaciele z Liliowego Boru), which contains the author’s project for the activities for children in the field of prevention and promotion of security. The Lilac Forest has received an honorary patronage of the World for Kids Foundation and Polish Resuscitation Council.

This analysis aims to describe the main features of hypermedia literary apps for children by considering a corpus of adaptations of classic and contemporary picturebooks. In particular, it highlights the multimodal nature that defines hypermedia texts and their meanings, as well as the interactivity that programs different degrees of readers’ involvement and the various ways of using and exploring the virtual space of touchscreens. By describing some hypermedia features deployed in a selection of classic texts, I focus on the hypermedia adaptations of three contemporary Italian picturebooks: Iole, la balena mangiaparole by Gioia Marchegiani, Amico ragnolo by gloria francella, and Love, the App by Alberto Vanni. These were chosen to illustrate the significant literary use of several textual materials, the implementation of different types of interactivity, and the recreation of the material characteristics of the print edition through the virtual page. Founded on the appropriation and re-interpretation of the source, the adaptations considered here show a mix of literary intents and digital technologies, while highlighting the substantial homogeneity of the hypermedia strategies used in adapting classic and contemporary texts.

Opis:
Goethe’s Faust was long defined in Germany as an established part of literature lessons and as a part of canon, but a paradigm change in didactics and in literature science has challenged both. This essay takes a brief look at history of German-literature-lessons and at different methods of teaching and reading literature, especially Goethe’s Faust – analytical, productive and creative. It gives a survey about children’s books to Faust, comics and summaries and demonstrates the correlation between knowledge and reading comprehension.

It is commonly said that we live in a time of the relativism of values and this results in modern man having difficulty in defining values and applying them to life. The basic place of promoting these values is the family but the kindergarten undoubtedly shares this role due to the educational and didactic functions it implements since it introduces a child into the world of values. Both in the family and the kindergarten, the role and the value of children’s literature is not overestimated in the process of shaping the value system of a child. It is created for children, for their benefit. The article presents the results of research conducted in five selected local self-government kindergartens in Biała Podlaska. The main purpose of the research was to uncover the practical dimension of the use of literature by children aged 6 and the values it promotes. The purpose was achieved by means of four tasks: getting to know the titles of children’s books at home and their preferred literary positions getting to know their favourite characters identifying the literacy of children and the situations in which they have contact with books in a kindergarten. The research shows that building the world of values for a child without literature aimed at them is practically impossible. The way in which it is used, however, is primarily dependent on parents and the kindergarten.

Aim. The aim of the article is to analyse the ways African American children’s characters are constructed in selected picture-books and to determine whether they have any impact on the conduct of contemporary black youth facing discrimination in their own lives. It also argues that picture-books are one of the most influential media in the representation of racial problems.Methods. The subjects of the study are picture-books. The analysis pertains to the visual and the verbal narrative of the books, with a special emphasis being placed on the interplay between text and image as well as on the ways the meaning of the books is created. The texts are analysed using a number of existing research methods used for examining the picture-book format. Results. The article shows that the actions of selected children’s characters, whether real or imaginary, may serve as an incentive for contemporary youth to struggle for equal rights and contribute to the process of racial integration on a daily basis.Conclusions. The results can be considered in the process of establishing educational curricula for students from minority groups who need special literature that would empower them to take action and join in the efforts of adult members of their communities.

In the article the author examines fantastic novels by contemporary Polish writers (Andrzej Maleszka, Paweł Beręsowicz, Rafał Kosik and other) for young readers in a cultural context. In his essay he uses two well-known cultural categories “myth” and “magic” to his analysis of fantastic novels. According to the author, the myth and magic have two important functions in fantastic children’s literature. First, they lead young readers to knowledge about the world and depict different, complex phenomena of cultural dimension. Second, the myth and magic create a particular space (what “engulfs” young readers) of play and entertainment. Moreover, the myth and magic attract young readers to fabulous worlds including the elements of realistic literary convention. Thereby the writers increase their credibility among the youth. A “myth-magic” in the presented word of contemporary Polish fantastic novels assures balance between incredible entertainment represented by wizards, witches, dragons and the real world with characters having various digital devices within reach.

The article discusses children’s literature as a matter that can become highly politicized. While often viewed as apolitical, stories for children have always been subjected to hegemonic ideologies and mediated dominant norms. The analysis focuses on gender dimension of this normativity and shows that the attempts to create gender subversive stories for children have to face not only the conservative backlash but they also have to deal with wider cultural context and contemporary meanings of childhood. The last section of the article shows that no matter how gender balanced or stereotypical a story is, the interpretation lies with children themselves. Thus, researchers analyzing messages in children’s stories always have to take into account young readers and their diverse ways of understanding.

Although in the first decades of the 20th century the Albanian literature for children did not recognize any distinguished literary work, a series of liberation insurrections in north and south as well as the Declaration of Independence in 1912 show the great efforts of our Renaissance figures who were teachers, ideologists and active participants in the armed movement. All this big issues in the life of Albanian people as well as their freedom-loving spirit become the inspiration of many themes, details and motives in the Albanian literature for children. Some of well-known representatives of our national Renaissance such as: Çajupi, Asdreni, Fishta, Mjeda, Gurakuqi, Xanoni, J.Bageri etc., continued writing even during the first decades of the 20th century. In their poetic and literary writings, one could distinguish the romantic spirit of the exuberance of the love for the country, for the nature, for the universe, and sometimes there could be distinguished even a realistic tone which described the Albanian life. Throughout all this literary work, the love for the country was connected with the love for the language and with the great efforts that were made for founding Albanian schools, with the reverberation of the wars for freedom, with the description of nature, birds and flowers as well as with the inspiration taken from the fantastical and fabulous world of the world literature.

The article analyses how the author exploits mockery on the convention of fairy tales and children’s literature in the narrative thread set in the Green Valley. This storyline resembles a fairy tale, but its characters are a grotesque parody of the figures usually present in tales, intended both as folkloric narration and as a genre of children’s literature. Other elements of Polish Borderland folklore are strewn everywhere in the Valley. All fairy-tale elements are shown in a slanted or degraded form. The blend of fantasy and Borderland scenery places this territory on the same ontological level as the marvellous.

For many years the media have presented the rainforest as a fascinating and exotic place, abundant in various species of plants and animals, the home of people decorated with feathers or holding spears. Picturebooks are no exception. This article presents the ways a popular image of the Amazon forest is produced in picturebooks for young readers in English-speaking industrialised societies. The analysis shows that shaping knowledge about the tropical forest is based on stereotypes about the “untouched pristine forest” populated by “wild indigenous people” – a notion that is spurious. Some of these books undertake the subject of indigenous knowledge or the loss of cultural identity. However the presentation of these issues often lacks deeper dimensions. The exoticisation of rainforest inhabitants as well as the forest itself may have a negative impact on young readers’ understanding of the cultural diversity of the Amazon, as well as their understanding of the complexity of indigenous peoples’ lives.

The aim of the study is to determine whether translation scholars’ postulates on picturebook’s translation are reflected in reality. In order to determine this, I will investigate the choices of translators of this medium and their awareness of multimodality. I intend to conduct a series of individual in-depth interviews with picturebook translators. The first interview has already been conducted and analysed, and in this paper I present the results of this analysis. In the examples cited from the supporting material, it can be observed that the translator took into account the relationship between the textual and visual layers, changing the original text in accordance with the visual layer.

The text raises the question of movement as a crucial category in the process of a child’s literary reception. The article reflects on the kinetic aspects of a text and a reader as well as on the perspective of a child’s subjective reception as dependent on personal predispositions of a child‑recipient. The author is interested in the intersections of the components of a literary work and the capabilities of a child‑recipient, that is, in the phenomenon called “reader response.” Referring to achievements of developmental psychology, the researcher introduces the figure of a child reader. Next, on the example of Jan Brzechwa’s poem “Stonoga,” she presents its mobility in language, pointing to the existence of “dynamic images,” created in a recipient’s imagination. In this way, she indicates the kinesthetic value of children’s literature.

A comic is not always thought of as an artistic genre popular in conveying knowledge to young recipients. It is often treated as a read of aesthetic and playful value. Researchers who analyse books that use iconotext (consisting of images and text) tend to take interest in picture books, which are considered artifacts of both artistic and pedagogical-educational value (see e.g. Cackowska 2017). This article focuses on the comic book, its formal structure and elements of poetics. The following features are analysed: sequencing, iconotext, narrativity, and dialogicality. The method used involves the analysis of both the verbal and visual layers, which made it possible to reveal the potential of a comic book as an educational medium that can convey knowledge to young readers in an attractive way. It is because a comic fits in with the trends of the contemporary culture which is largely based on visuality. The artistic genre in question is also a valuable medium that facilitates visual literacy and helps to develop critical reading as well as detailed observation of images of varying degrees of complexity.

This article examines how the child consumer is represented in a selection of branded picturebooks at the beginning of the 20th century. By analyzing children’s books published by a commercial chain of stores, the Cooperation Union, the article discusses how depictions of children as consumers are connected to the development of the emerging mass market and consumer society. The new ideas and marketing strategies expressed in these books also coincide with fundamental social changes in society, resulting from modernity and new technologies. Although the Cooperation books were designed for children and used familiar narrative techniques and motifs within children’s literature, I will argue that the books had a twofold audience. They were not only aimed at children but also at their parents. Representations of children as consumers in the studied material suggest that consumption is strongly connected to ideas of modernity and to representations of the modern child, but also that consumption is described as an inseparable part of the modern, urban experience.

Aim. The aim of the research is the comparative study of literary cat characters in Children’s Literature texts in Greek and Spanish and their instructive function in the transmission of social stereotypes. Methods. The research subscribes to the field of Literary Animal Studies based on the theory of Children’s Literature (Lukens, 1999) and through the intercultural perspective of Comparative Children’s Literature (O’Sullivan, 2005). Published children’s books from Greece, Spain and Spanish-speaking America were compared using textual analysis methods of Imagology (Beller & Leersen, 2007). Stereotyped variants were identified and organized in categories related to name, physical appearance, gender, behavior, and function of literary cat characters. Results. After examining a corpus of 37 books, 23 in Greek and 17 in Spanish (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Spain), textual analysis findings were compared, organized, and classified by language, country and readers’ age groups to locate that literary cat characters are usually pets or feral, and they remain consistently stereotyped as anthropomorphic and subversive. Cats with seven lives and magical powers are common perceptions, dominating in both cultural contexts, stereotypes extended to strong superstitions about black cats. Conclusions. In Children's Literature texts, cats are linguistically, literally, and socially defined literary constructs, can have usually human-like features, intercultural influences, and are potentially shaped by intertextual relations. They serve also as a narrative motif for the transmission of social values about non-human animals and the textual familiarization of nonadult readers with society’s cultural stereotypes.

Next, the paper discusses the notion of political correctness and its role in works written for young audiences. Three of them, i.e. the translations by Jan Biliński, Marceli Tarnowski and Kazimierz Piotrowski, appeared in the first half of the 20th century; the remaining ones, i.e. the translations by Paweł Łopatka, Paweł Beręsewicz, Marta Kędroń and Barbara Ludwiczak, Aleksandra Kubiak, Jędrzej Polak, were published after 2000. All the versions were examined to identify the situations in which the writer, narrator and the characters refer to the representatives of the Black minority. The analysis aimed at the identification of the changes in the translation of fragments describing Afro-Americans resulting from political correctness.

Małgorzata Ewa Chrobak’s aim in this article is to read Justyna Bednarek’s books for children from the perspective of “thing studies.” Chrobak investigates how everyday objects and their re-use are represented in a selection of those books, e.g., Nowe przygody skarpetek (jeszcze bardziej niesamowite) [The Socks’ New Adventures (More Amazing Than Ever)]; Banda Czarnej Frotté [The Band of the Black Frotté]; Skarpetki powracają! [The Socks Are Back!]; Zielone piórko Zbigniewa [Zbigniew’s Green Feather]; Skarpetki kontratakują! [The Socks Strike Back!]. Chrobak examines the possibilities of applying two interpretive categories to Bednarek’s fiction, those of “biography of things” and “cultural recycling.”

Cel badań: Jako cel badań wykorzystanych w artykule obrano próbę rekonstrukcji obrazu polskiej książki dziecięcej przełomu XIX i XX wieku, uwzględniając dwa problemy badawcze. Dotyczą one estetyki oraz przesłań wychowawczych lektury polecanej najmłodszym czytelnikom. Te zakresy badań są dość skąpo reprezentowane. Wykorzystano metody i techniki badań historycznych. Kształtowanie patriotyzmu u dzieci obejmowało przekaz chlubnych kart dziejowych z historii polskiego narodu, budzenie afirmacyjnego stosunku do rodzimej przyrody obecne w kluczowych wydaniach dla młodego czytelnika przełomu XIX i XX wieku.
Introduction: Polish children’s literature grew out of a close relationship between literature and pedagogy, which took place at the beginning of the nineteenth century, in a difficult political and economic situation for Poles due to the continuation of the partition regime. The cultural development of the nation is connected with the upbringing of the young generation. In the nineteenth century, the Polish book was introduced as a means of education. Research Aim: The aim of the research used in the article was an attempt to reconstruct the image of the Polish children’s book at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, taking into account two research problems. They concern the aesthetics and educational messages of reading recommended for the youngest readers. These areas of research are quite sparsely represented. Methods and techniques of historical research were used. Evidence-based Facts: Polish children’s literature developing during the partitions of Poland was studied by a group of Polish researchers: literary scholars, bibliologists, pedagogues and historians of education. However, this research area is unexploited, constituting a rich material for new research searches. Summary: The conducted analyses show that in the years preceding regaining independence, two educational positions dominated children’s literature. The first concerned building a patriotic attitude, the second emphasized pragmatism and realism of everyday situations. A number of examples of books for children that confirm these conclusions have been analyzed. The formation of patriotism in children included the transmission of glorious historical pages from the history of the Polish nation, awakening an affirmative attitude to native nature present in key editions for young readers at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Everyday life is presented mainly by images of family, children’s games and instructive stories, adventures from the life of peers. The aesthetics of the children’s book of the discussed period fits into the style in force at that time, based on the pursuit of a masterful typographic arrangement. The uniqueness of the illustrations, especially colorful, as can be assumed, were a strong reinforcement of the impact of the message.

This article is an attempt to examine whether literature can be a remedy for the problems faced by children of different ages. The report Children’s rights from the perspective of children, parents and teachers was published in 2019 by UNICEF Polska. It has been used to diagnose the reasons for unhappiness among children aged 12—17. Among the reasons are: school and education, relationships with loved ones, relationships with peers. In her article, Katarzyna Kotaba refers to such authorities as Irena Borecka, Maria Molicka, and Bruno Bettelheim and to their unanimous opinion that good and valuable literature takes seriously children, their concerns and difficulties; moreover, this kind of literature helps children to overcome difficulties by building their self-confidence. Kotaba identifies the main thematic motifs in Gawryluk’s fiction and shows how this writer’s novels can help under-age readers cope in specific life situations, such as the parents’ divorce, emigration, and racism. In conclusion, she suggests that Gawryluk’s novels could be regarded as a cure for young readers’ problems as identified in the UNICEF report.

The article focuses on Ten i tamten las [This and That Forest] by Magdalena Tulli, which is another recent example of a book addressed to children, whose sender is a distinguished author of adult literature. The interpretation of the text reveals the adult problems and emotions faced by its animal heroes, subtly hidden behind the adventurous layer of the work. Consequently, the reader receives a book that defies the traditional division into children’s literature and adult literature: a book that requires not so much the right metrics as sensitivity.

The focus of research in the field of literature for children and youth on objects results from post‑humanistic methodologies and brings about interesting results. Opis:
Paul Maar (born in 1937) is one of the most important modern German writers for children and young people. He is widely known for his bestselling series of books about Sams (1973) – a strange creature – a mixture of a child, a monkey and a pig that can grant wishes. Sams is an incorporation of anarchy and playfulness and in this way resembles Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Langstrumpf, but first of all it refers to E. T. A. Hoffmanns fantastic tale “The strange child” (1817). Hoffmann’s and Paul Maar’s stories reveal a lot of similarities and both are revolutionary as far as the methods of children’s education are concerned. Both underline the importance of play, creativity and freedom for children’s development. The first book about Sams was translated into Polish in 2009, more than 35 years after its German premiere. The Polish version was probably too late to be able to play a similarly revolutionary role. The connection to E. T. A. Hoffmann’s “The Strange Child” could also not be noticed as its Polish rendition was published even later – in 2014 (translated by the author of the paper). But the shape of Polish translation can also be one of the reasons why Sams did not gain a comparable popularity as the original story. Polish Sams – due to some modifications in the translation – is a much more well-behaved and disciplined creature than the anarchic and playful German Sams.

Opis:
This paper analyses the publishing trends of children’s literature in Italy on the basis of the annual reports issued by LiBeRWEB. The analysis, which focuses on the book publishing market, starts by introducing the main Italian publishing houses, in whose hands the publication of children’s books is concentrated. The paper will also talk about independent micropublishing by introducing the most active publishing houses, which are specialised in specific areas, such as gender studies. The publishing market will be progressively investigated by analysing several data, which suggest that literature for children and young adults is the driving segment of the Italian book publishing market. Indeed, despite the economic crisis, this is the only segment that has had positive results in the last years. In particular, the data examine several elements, which will allow us to understand such a phenomenon. If in the last years the so-called “high literature” has lost many percentage points (-7.6% in 2009), the “Cinderella of literature” has, instead, obtained positive results (+4%), maintaining constant production levels. Despite the use of percentages, the analysis takes into consideration other elements, like the quality of works, whose criteria are difficult to establish. The data show a positive change: if up to 2006 the number of novels of mediocre quality was high, probably do to a consumer trend of the market, from 2007 onwards, the situation progressively improves. Finally, the article briefly discusses the data of the digital market by analysing the role of audiobooks and e-books in the Italian market of children’s literature.

In an attempt to find a possible criterion according to which to select the most representative titles and authors in the history of Italian children’s literature, one finds that a very peculiar theme characterises the books that can be considered most remarkable: death. Death, though, in Italian as well as in all the other children’s classics around the world, is not dealt with in a literal way, but in a metaphorical, symbolic, indirect one. Therefore, it is necessary to borrow interpretative approaches from other scientific fields (anthropology and philosophy, for example) in order to understand death’s deepest meaning and to discover that what it stands for, in Italian (and not only Italian) children’s literature, is an “otherness”, a “beyond”, an unknown and non-anthropocentric dimension that children must go through in order to grow up.

The paper deals with the question of tabooization in contemporary Czech children’s literature. Firstly, it is an attempt to define the term “taboo” from the position of a specific genre, such as literature for children. Then, using selected examples of contemporary Czech books for children, we will try to show how contemporary authors and illustrators treat the categories of vulgarity, sexuality and physicality. Do they intend to express the desire to cross social taboos and shock, or the desire to speak “naturally about natural things”? This endeavor to cross borders is most likely related to the so-called collapse of the age category in literature for children and youth.

It has various difficult problems, can not find happiness. Her happiness turns out to be really bad luck. The girl decides to commit suicide, because she is very lonely and does not under-stand her family and friends. She has the nickname 'nobody', invented his friends. Nick shows that Mary is insig-nificant person. Marysia falls with love twice in her friends – Kasia end Ewa. Friends do not love her. Happiness and sadness always come together in her life. Children's literature shows how happiness and unhappiness are together in life. The concept of (un)happiness is necessary to describe a novel for young readers, where happiness is often bittersweet.

The paper presents a comparative study of two adaptations of Gulliver’s Travels, which were published at the turn of the 20th century in two different literary polysystems: a Polish adaptation by Aleksandra Callier (1908) and a Ladino adaptation by Alexandr Ben Ghiat. The paper discusses not only the respective places both adaptations take in the two literary systems of the cultures of that time, but also selected linguistic, narratological, and genre-related issues, as well as matters concerning the representation of the world, the protagonist, and domestication. The analysis shows that the Polish version is strongly domesticated as opposed to the Ladino version which stripped of most realia acquires a universal character. Both versions fall within the framework of the adventure story genre, partly due to borrowings from other literary texts.

Opis:
Children’s literature is sometimes considered to be the poor relation of literary genres throughout the world, as it is often confined to the rank of literature for the very young. Yet, on closer inspection, does this literature not play an important role in establishing national identity? In other words, does it contribute to the spread of tolerance and therefore to living together? Backed by Pierre Barbéris’ sociocriticism and structured in three parts, this contribution first illustrates the motivations behind the characters’ behavioural imposture; then examines the internal components that articulate the novel’s literality. Finally, the analysis shows that Jeanne Abou’ou’s Lettre à Tita 2, beyond the stigmatization of a poorly assumed modernism or the exaltation of traditional values, deeply encapsulates the writer’s desire to postulate an emerging world in which Cameroonians would readily identify themselves.

This short study embraces both the first sprouts of the written Macedonian literature for children (somewhere around the second part of the 19th century), and the literary production which happens after the establishment of the contemporary Macedonian language, that is, after the 1945. Still, the main accent is on two newer books: Verses also Grow (И строфите растат) by Alexandar Kujundziski and Jump and Skip (Скокни прескокни) by Vasil Mukaetov which is a part of the refreshed reading list as an optional book for the Macedonian language lessons in the primary schools in Macedonia. Both authors put an emphasis exactly on a child’s sensitivity and such issues as character growth and maturation. In their books, they transfer the reader from childhood to adulthood unnoticeably and lightly. Their message is to help the little human in the complex process of his or her own comprehension and to show him or her that he or she are not alone in this process.

Opis:
Article is deeply rooted in the history of society, presents the historical and socio-cultural situation of phenomenon of playing, children’s games and the role of children’s literature between the Enlightenment and Romanticism and shows that especially the middle class does not occupy an outstanding position. On the contrary, the middle class belongs to the most sceptical social forces. The central values of the middle class – especially the puritan, Calvinist und pietistic parts of it – are different: industriousness, diligence, asceticism, the sacrifice of pleasure, efficiency and rationality. In the bourgeois use of time, all idleness basically counts as suspicious, all playing as a useless waste of time. This attitude is reinforced by the polemical delimitation from the noble and courtly lifestyle, in which all kinds of games have a central place and which, for this reason, is viewed as parasitic. Article pays attention also to the German word for play or game (in German, there is just one word for this, “Spiel”), which can be used for mental games, word play, but also the performance on stage or in an orchestra. Beyond this, text emphasised how to classify genres based on play with language, with sense and nonsense, as well as literary patterns, and genres such as nonsense poetry and parody, as part of intellectual culture rather than part of play culture.

Disability and children with disabilities are rarely included in children’s literature. Depicting characters with special needs is important because of the process of social inclusion – for children without dysfunctions and for those with some problems in psychophysical functioning. But there are often a lot of stereotypes in literary texts. The aim of this paper is to show cultural textswhich present disability and join ethical and aesthetical values at the same playing field.

Writers build the literary myth of the forest as mother-nature, in which the main place belongs to the bison. The Białowieża Forest has got its own storytellers, who create fabulous stories, full of universal as well as regional and borderland elements. Opis:
Children’s literature, despite being a relatively young branch of literature in general, is an important factor in the upbringing of children. Its basic aims have been obvious but not simple to achieve – to develop a child’s personality, provide educational experiences and encourage him to read. Along with areas such as art, theater, puppetry, music, movement and field trips, literature is also an object of children’s attention. Moreover it provides an opportunity to gain experience and learn a lesson, as children are usually open to fairytale-like content. Because of that, a magic world of adventures usually becomes a part of the educational process, imparting moral patterns and exposing them to various experiences, values and attitudes. Listening to stories told by parents, nannies, and teachers, which are later read by children themselves, is an activity beloved by children from all over the world. This research focuses especially on Kurdish experiences in terms of children’s literature and its role in bringing up a child. It indicates essential differences between contents, aims and circumstances upon which certain stories occurred. It provides an explanation of their role in developing a mature personality and patriotism41 upbringing among Kurdish children.
Przedstawiają wyjaśnienie roli tych opowiadań w rozwijaniu dojrzałej osobowości i patriotyzmu w procesie wychowania kurdyjskich dzieci.

Focusing on Stradbroke Dreamtime (1972), the first prose book of an Australian Indigenous poet, activist and educationalist, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (also known as Kath Walker), I reflect on questions which arise around cross-cultural communication and translation. Prompted by the unfinished project aimed at translating Stradbroke Dreamtime into Polish, I deliberate on challenges to respond appropriately to Australian Indigenous writing, particularly if it is influenced by white editing and publishing practices which often privilege Eurocentric views. Situating Stradbroke Dreamtime in the broader context of Noonuccal’s life, political activism and pedagogical efforts, I read her work as an intergenerational, inclusive and transformative project, and an act of solidarity between generations and cultures. In the context of Indigenous Australia, the concept of solidarity is often associated with reconciliation. I explore this nexus, arguing that Stradbroke Dreamtime reflects Walker’s strategy for reconciliation which includes empowering children through storytelling.

Opis:
The author analyzes the essential relationship between contemporary literature for children and youth and axiology in the context of Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura. Dimension of the children’s literature includes a numerous works which present a different system of values, e.g. from conservative to the liberal. However, a huge part of such works have a feature of a typical popular text but still a reader can find an artistic, valuable works for children on the Polish book market. Therefore a suitable support for the process of management between children’s literature and the system of value is the most important issue. Thus, a traditional work of reviewers and researchers is not enough today to find a suitable path to exam a numerous work of the children’s literature in axiological context. Therefore the author argues that we should describe the connection between the contemporary children’s literature and axiology by the three phenomena: blog-critique, dominance of a public discourse and a children’s writer.

Opis:
Picturebooks (and silent books, with images only and without words) are children’s books commonly considered suitable only for young children of pre-school age or in the earliest years of schooling. For this reason, picturebooks are mostly neglected in teaching in higher educational stages. Nevertheless, the educational potential of picturebooks is considerable, especially in the later years of primary school. For example, in Italian language teaching, they can be extraordinary tools for planning didactic projects that allow instructors to integrate the teaching/learning of all linguistic skills and of metalinguistic reflection, which are the main elements in the curricula related to Italian language teaching in Italian-speaking countries and contexts. The article aims to show the validity of the above claim by establishing a possible classification of picturebooks into six distinct types and by describing some didactic projects and activities developed in primary schools in Canton Ticino (Italian Switzerland). Focusing on the pleasure of reading engaging stories and on motivation, picturebooks enable teachers to pursue ambitious and challenging goals, such as creating one or more new picturebooks inspired by the one read initially or transposing a picturebook into a theatre script. At the same time, picturebooks enable students to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Opis:
Polish literature has been present in China since 1906. The first Polish literary text translated into Chinese was Latarnik (The Lighthouse Keeper) by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Contemporary fans of Polish novella and novel were reading indirect translations since the Chinese novelists, who did not speak Polish, usually based their translations on the Japanese versions. In my years of contact with Chinese culture and literature, I have never come across any mention of translations of Polish or Eastern European children’s literature. Once I started my research into this subject, I quickly learned what caused the lack of information on it. It turned out that it was quite difficult to find any credible information on what has been translated, in what volume it was published and what the reactions of young readers were.As a result, this article is merely an introduction to the research on Polish children’s literature in People’s Republic of China and focuses almost exclusively on latest publications, i.e. released in the twenty-first century. To a significant extent, it is based on data collected from people actively participating in promoting Polish culture in China via email. I received a lot of valuable data from Wojciech Widłak – one of the authors whose children’s books were published in China. The article is practically a short catalogue of books published on the Chinese market, but it also presents the few reviews I have managed to find in Chinese sources. There is also a presentation of the translators and it is worth noting that Polish children’s literature has been taken care of by the best among those studying Polish literature in China. I hope that this article will be the first of many on the position, popularity and reception of Polish children’s literature in China.

Based on a corpus of nine tales by Oscar Wilde (making up the two well-known volumes: The Happy Prince and Other Stories, 1888, and A House of Pomegranates, 1891), along with nine Romanian versions of these texts, the present article aims at reflecting on the linguo-semantic expression of emotion (with a focus on subjective adjectives like little, big, poor etc.), as well as making an inventory of the compensation strategies used by translators, taking into account the fact that most Romanian versions are addressed to children, and also that translation criticism, just like translating itself, is a matter of instinct, taste, affinity, finally emotion.

The motif of thread and the related activities of weaving, spinning, sewing are of great importance in the Jewish culture It also plays an important role in the recent Polish children’s literature devoted to the subject of the Holocaust. Knitting Jewish women are reminiscent of ancient Parkas, the thread is often the symbol of the bond that ties the protagonists; it shows the way of escape and constitutes the matter which can be changed, repeating the creative gesture of God. Above all, it is the metaphor of memory – a story of the past which introduces its plot into the collective consciousness.

Opis:
Since early childhood, a child’s value system is shaped by many factors. One of them includes children’s literature created for the youngest readers to provide them with some patterns of moral behaviour. In this article, the author analyses the way of shaping the child’s system of values in several works of literature which deal with courage. The following works were subject to qualitative analysis: The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren, and The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. Both of them are classic children’s books. Choosing them resulted mainly from the willingness to learn how to use a novel in the education of a child at a younger school age. The main issue of this article was preceded by a synthetic analysis of books on the subject, focusing on describing the notions of children’s literature and books for children, values in children’s life, as well as the development and functioning of a child in late childhood. The qualitative analysis of the above-mentioned literary works proved that building the world of values of younger schoolchildren is possible with the support of books created for them.

Opis:
The article Zombie Apocalypse in Contemporary Children’s Literature tackles a subject which has scarcely been mentioned in Polish research on children’s literature: that of catastrophic zombie-centric narratives, elements of which – especially the motif of the zombie apocalypse – are increasingly common in works targeted at children of pre- school and early school age. Three popular English-language picturebooks are interpreted: A Brain Is for Eating (2001) by Dan and Amelia Jacobs with ilustrations by Scott Brundage, Joe McGee and Charles Santoso’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Brains (2015), and Zombie Cat. The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty (2012) by Isabel Atherton and Bethany Straker. The dominant features of these books are respectively: dark carnivalisation and a drastic representation of bloodthirsty monsters; mild carnivalisation and a zombie-child as a humanised phantom; dark carnivalisation with an animal zombie leitmotif. The texts present a multidimensional, grotesque-macabre depiction inspired by children’s folklore and apocalyptic gore cinema, as well as its significance in the context of discourses focused on post-humanism and social issues of importance in the present day. The article also seeks to answer the question of why these subjects are less popular among Polish authors, and what makes them so important in Anglo-Saxon children’s literature.
Artykuł „Apokalipsa zombie we współczesnej literaturze dziecięcej” porusza mało rozpoznany w polskich badaniach nad literaturą dla dzieci temat katastroficznych narracji zombiecentrycznych, których elementy, szczególnie motyw zombie apokalipsy, pojawiają się coraz częściej w utworach skierowanych do dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i młodszym wieku szkolnym. Interpretacji podlegają trzy popularne anglosaskie książki obrazkowe: „A Brain is for Eating” (2001) Dana i Amelii Jacobsów z ilustracjami Scotta Brundagea,„Peanut Butter & Jelly Brains”(2015) Joe’go McGee i Charles’a Santoso oraz „Zombie Cat.

Przywołane pojęcie „biologii lektury” ugruntowuje przekonanie o korzyściach i nieodzowności czytania tekstów literackich w okresie dzieciństwa.
The text is based on considerations concerning the function of literature in human life. The significant role assigned to literary creativity makes it important in the process of both education and upbringing. For this reason, the aim of the article is to present the degree to which contemporary Polish students in grades 1-3 of the primary school are interested in literature. The analysis is based on the results of the survey. The concept of children's literature was defined, and the necessity for the presence, knowledge and interpretation of literary texts, both in the elementary education of the child and in his/her broadly understood upbringing process, was indicated. The above mentioned concept of the "biology of reading" reinforces our belief that reading literary texts is beneficial and necessary during childhood.

Opis:
For a literary scholar specialising in texts targeted at children it is tempting to explore the authentic, original childish cognition of the text, together with the feelings and reflections that accompany the child while reading. At the same time, the scholar knows that the access to these sphere is, inevitably, only partial, even scant compared to the scholar’s curiosity. This article is an attempt to describe a specific “case study” for the analysed source of cognition are the memories of the author herself, concerning her childish readings, her judgements and emotions that the characters she read about evoked in her. The motif for such an idea is a strong conviction that the information included in her vivid memories and experiences provide an interesting, sometimes even surprising, field for analysis. Nevertheless, the author is aware that the memories we possess are never available in the “clear form”. However, the process of transformation of the memories is not treated as an obstacle; quite the contrary, it offers a possibility to add an additional perspective, since the adult personality of a former child – a bookworm – is interlinked with the profession of a literary scholar.

Aim. School segregation is a common theme of children’s books on minority groups living in the United States. Although it is primarily associated with black-white racial divisions, currently it also concerns white-Latino or rich-poor disparities. The aim of this paper is to analyse children’s picture books featuring Latino and African American characters who participate in the struggle against school segregation. The authors of the books, being members of racial minorities themselves, offer differing perspectives on the problem. Although they criticise school segregation, they also focus on the white perspective and the reasons why integrating schools has always been hard to achieve. Methods. The study analyses the visual and verbal narratives of selected picture books using a variety of methods for examining this literary format. Among others, it applies the theory of picture book analysis by Martin Painter, William Moebius, Maria Nikolajeva and Carole Scott. Results. The article shows that despite the existing scholarship on race-related problems in American schools, children’s literature seems to be the medium which tries to explain the problem to youngsters being directly involved in the system of segregation. Conclusions. The results can be useful to educators who cope with the issue of racial diversity in American schools. They may consider using selected titles of children’s literature as teaching aids assisting students from minority groups in the process of self-development and empowerment.

Opis:
The article comments on the ninth Polish translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, by Elżbieta Tabakowska. As the key to the analysis of this translation, the present author has chosen the relations between the text and image, especially the illustrations by sir John Tenniel and Tove Jansson. As opposed to previous translators or Alice in Wonderland, Tabakowska’s attempts to modernise the book to make it more accessible for 20th-century readers, and more compatible with 20th-century illustrations. In the edition discussed here, it is actually possible to discern two translations, translation proper and and an intersemiotic one, because illustrations by the author of Moomin books introduce connotations which would be totally alien to 19th-century girls. Through analysis of specific translation choices, the article underlines the strengths of the newest translation, such as its competent Polish, the wealth of Polish contexts, the educational role of exoticisation, and the retained principle of double reception. The article, however, also points out to certain weaknesses of the translation. Anna Rogulska also notices that, because the represented world is deeply rooted in the culture of Victorian England, the text cannot by fully rendered in the 21st century. Another interpretative key for the reading of the newest Polish edition of Carroll’s book is cognitive linguistics, which is the academic specialisation of the translator. The article demonstrates that the function of the new translation was not only a contribution to the long series of Polish renditions of Alice in Wonderland, but also a practical application of cognitive science in literature, which makes the translation valuable not only for children’s literature, but also for scientific inquiry.

The main aim of the paper is to analyse the literary representations of meetings of children’s characters with Germans. The revision of the image of a German, who has been perceived as strange and dangerous for centuries, is carried out based on the example of selected contemporary books for young readers as well as literature for adults. There is a tendency to perpetuate a negative stereotype in contemporary Polish literature on the one hand and an attempt to overturn it on the other. The latter is achieved by presenting individual and often tragic German lives that so far have been marginalised in narratives about the past.

The text is devoted to the critical description and evaluation of editions of works by Romantic writers intended for children. These are prepared ad usum Delphini. The texts are given in a selection suitable for children, rephrased (because they were originally mostly written for adults), prepared from larger works, and given in fragments. They are given new titles or retitled. The editions lack basic editorial information, such as indications of the sources of the fragments included in the anthology. The noble intention of introducing young readers to Romantic poetry is not counterbalanced by the fact that such editions offer a vision of a tame, infantilised, illustrated and finally caricatured Romanticism, inclining the reader to an extra-contextual and extremely simplified interpretation.

In this article, Krystyna Zabawa analyses Barbara Gawryluk’s novel for older children Czarna, Klifka i tajemnice z dna morza [Czarna, Klifka and the secrets from the seabed] from the perspective of the commentaries this novel makes on language issues and on aspects of interpersonal as well as interspecies communication. Zabawa identifies the ways in which the novel presents foreign languages (Swedish and English) and how it encourages young readers to learn them. Zabawa interprets Gawryluk’s novel a text about communication problems and about the conditions necessary for mutual understanding among people. She also analyses passages in the novel that address human-animal and animal-animal communication.

The paper examines La Foresta-Radice-Labirinto (1981), a fairy tale which is one of Italo Calvino’s latest and lesser known works. In what can be regarded as his testament, Calvino looks back on and revives the ecological commitment of his literary production and his attention to the complex relationship between nature and culture, which has been a prominent leitmotif of his writings (from The Baron in the Trees to The Cloud of Smog, and from the adventures of Marcovaldo to the Invisible Cities). The paper offers a detailed symbological and eco-critical analysis of the text, in order to examine an ‘ecology of mind’ as developed by Calvino, invariably sensitive to hybridisation and to the ongoing and often difficult relation between historical and environmental mutations. In doing so, the paper lists and explores the construction of images-icons and figures-types that make up what Calvino calls ‘a pedagogy of imagination’. The paper focuses on Calvino’s dedication to education through fairy tales as a primary form of experience, capable of conveying universal messages to a young readership, and on his longing for an authentic exposure to the environment, where getting lost means finding oneself and where chaos leads to a new order, founded on an ethical search for a more harmonious union of city, human beings and nature.

The paper presents the results of the analysis of about a hundred Polish books for younger children (3–10 year-olds) written in the 21st century. During the research special attention was paid to the depiction of children’s play in the analysed literature. The author compared the character of play in Polish children’s classics (M. Konopnicka, M. Kownacka, Cz. Janczarski) with recent stories and novels (written by G. Kasdepke, R. Jędrzejewska-Wróbel, R. Witek, A. Tyszka and others). Some sociological research is referenced in order to assess whether writers present actual situations of play (diagnostic) or try to influence play by giving advice on how to play and what to play (prescriptive). The main conclusions of the research are: in contemporary literature for young readers, children’s play is not presented as often as it was in the previous century; children characters need adults’ help, advice or company to play, they rarely play outside with their friends without adult supervision. Instead, children’s play now often takes place in cyberspace and kids become addicted to their computers and other electronic devices; children are often bored and expect help in finding interesting and involving forms of play.

The image of the child hero as an emblem of the Soviet people’s unfailing dedication to the communist cause dominated Soviet media discourse years before the beginning of WWII. And yet, shortly after the war commenced on Soviet territory, reports on children’s valor nearly disappeared from the pages of Pravda, the country’s leading daily of the time. In contrast, the wartime journalistic portrayal of child fatalities of the Great Patriotic War prevailed over heroic representations of children. Overall, the newspaper graphically and insistently depicted the Soviet young as murdered, maimed, and brutally tortured victims, thus helping to launch and sustain the “hate-and-revenge” campaign which lasted until the allied victory appeared irreversible. In the 1940s, Soviet children’s literature inverted the central rhetorical tropes of the wartime propaganda discourse by representing children as heroes, rather than victims, it offered its readers a more nuanced portrayal of a deeply traumatized, psychologically vulnerable, and often bereaved child. That said, the inconsistencies of tone, voice, and characterization children’s fiction inherited from the media accounts of war childhood occurred in even such celebrated children’s novels as Syn polka (The Son of the Regiment, 1944) by Valentin Kataev and Vasek Trubachev i ego tovarishchi (Vasek Trubachev and His Comrades,1947–1951) by Valentina Oseeva.

Tekst dotyczy twórczości dla dzieci współczesnej polskiej pisarki – Justyny Bednarek. Badaczka zajęła się dwoma pierwszymi częściami cyklu o skarpetkach [część I: Niesamowite przygody 10 skarpetek (czterech prawych i sześciu lewych) – 2015; część II: Nowe przygody skarpetek (jeszcze bardziej niesamowite) – 2017]. Badaczka nawiązuje do refleksji nad przedmiotami w literaturze dziecięcej. Poszukuje kontekstów w pedagogice, psychoanalizie i kulturze.
The text concerns the books for children of the contemporary Polish writer - Justyna Bednarek. The researcher dealt with the first two parts of the cycle about socks [part I: Amazing Adventures of 10 Socks (Four Right and Six Left Ones) – 2015; part II: New (Even More Amazing) Adventures of Socks – 2017]. The basic subject is showing a model of a new literary hero in the writer’s works by selecting significant “life truths” represented by the characters of socks. The researcher refers to the reflection on objects in children’s literature. She searches for contexts in pedagogy, psychoanalysis and culture. She tries to discover the world of things shown in the book through the stories of the title characters subject to  personification. She interprets the figure of a sock, created by Bednarek, seeing in it a cultural role model for contemporary children-readers.

According to the estimated data, among the group of Polish war refugees in Hungary in 1939–1945 there were about 450 children at the age of primary education. After reorganizing and bringing to life the refugee structures, there was a special publishing action organized especially for these children, this action resulted in publishing ten books for the youngest reader in Budapest in 1940–1943. All of them – as almost all books published by the Hungarian Dispersion – were created using the “small print” technology. These editions were handled by the American Committee for Polish Relief (2 books in 1940), and – most of all – by the Polish Library (Biblioteka Polska – 8 books throughout 1941–1943). Apart from the renewals of positions for children and adolescents from before 1939, which were limited by the availability of the originals, there is one author that deserves special credit – the young teacher Maria Grażyna Ławrukianiec, who was the only author in the Hungarian refugee world to devote her work completely to the youngest reader. She published three books with the Polish Library, all of which comprised of poematic or prosaic short stories for children (Księżycowa bajka 1941, Opowiadania 1942, Tytuł da serce 1943), as well as a new translation of a popular novel by Alan Alexander Milne about Winnie the Pooh called Miś Puh- Niedźwiedzki – 1943. The characteristic feature of the publishing program of the Polish Library was a completely free-of-charge distribution of all children books within the premises of the Kingdom of Hungary. This distribution was conducted based on the demand lists created by individual facilities and camps all over the kingdom. The books were also – when possible – tried to be distributed free-of-charge outside the boundaries of Hungary to other Polish refugee groups.

Opis:
The connection between the avant-garde and Polish children’s literature may seem somewhat tenuous, since the former was generally considered, not without a reason, secondary and peripheral to mainstream literature. For a long time, Polish children’s literature, whose main aim was to serve educational and patriotic purposes, was perceived in such a way, which makes Julian Tuwim’s works even more exceptional. Tuwim revolutionized the traditional approach to poetry for children and created a literary style that was by no means inferior to experimental literature for adults. This article analyses two aspects of the innovativeness of Tuwim’s poetry: a) a radical departure from the former literary patterns and conventions that were typical of works for children and b) a creative development of the experiments first introduced by representatives of such avant-garde movements as Futurism and Surrealism.

Opis:
Literature for children and youth is reinterpreted under the influence of the new humanities. For example, prose from the 20th century is subjected to postcolonial read-outs (In Desert and Wilderness [W pustyni i w puszczy] by Henryk Sienkiewicz, the novel cycle by Alfred Szklarski), an eco-critical reading of the works of Tove Jansson, Hugh Lofting and the Polish writers Ludwik Jerzy Kern and Dorota Terakowska is proposed. On the other hand, works based on historical issues create a thematically focused series of publications, genealogical and geanological cycles, which are also fictionalized biographies, separate works referring to the lineage of the Polish state and dynastic linagees, post-memory narratives of a so-called “second generation” about the experience of the Second World War, and works on migration issues. The examples of literary historiography for adolescents mentioned and described in the article, captured in several areas of the formal issues, can be read through the prism of many analytical and interpretative practices, overlapping and incompletemethodologies. Retentional direction of reading, with the horizon of the past inscribed in it, does not exclude a protentional-oriented towards the future and environmental change, motivated by postcolonial revisions of old works, important issues of the 21st century (migration, post-memory), and a non-anthropocentric perception of reality. Their analysis should take into account the “poetics of history”, tropology of the narrative and narrative strategies (which Hayden White wrote about). Moreover, entangling the past with the present of the child-reader (and in fact with their future), seems to be a necessary condition for its interiorization, for recognizing it as one’s own, for admitting it. It always has a multitemporal, multigenerational and multicultural character.

Opis:
Children’s literature plays a key role in the process of socialization. It is one of the crucial factors which help the young reader to understand the surrounding world, also in terms of what is one’s own and what is other, different. On the one hand, its task is reflecting the existing reality, on the other-shaping specific attitudes towards it, for example through strengthening existing stereotypes or calling them in question. In English-language literature on the subject one can find numerous analyses of both broadly understood intercultural literature and depictions of individual nationalities, cultures, and races. So far, Polish children’s literature has not attracted much scholarly attention in this respect. It might result from the fact that the Polish population is to a large extent a homogenous group as regards race and nationality. However, this state of affairs is gradually changing, as Poland starts to attract migrants from all over the world and national and ethnic minorities already inhabiting the country are being discovered. In this context, it seems particularly interesting to ask if and how these social changes have influenced Polish children’s literature of today. The goal of this paper is to outline the issue of cultural diversity, in particular the presence of the national and ethnic “other” in the newest Polish children’s literature, according to criteria developed on the basis of Short, Lynch-Brown and Tomlinson’s guidelines (2014). The paper is also an attempt at determining to what extent Polish children’s literature corresponds with the model of intercultural education. As the analysis shows, Polish literature on cultural diversity is scarce, involves non-representative depictions of minorities, and lacks the “insider” perspective, and thus fulfills the postulates of intercultural education only in a limited way.

Cultures vary according to the level of political potency they attribute to their young readers. Some ascribe to their children the ability to experience political solidarity and are eager to offer them literaturę accordingly. Other cultures try to exempt children from taking any public interest and shield them within the home and family, distant from what is regarded as the aggressive public arena. In rare cultural and social conditions shifts from one attitude to another regarding children’s political potency can be quite extreme. This article points to a dramatic change in the nature of politicization of Hebrew children’s picturebooks, which took place in the decade following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. This period saw a rapid transition from the former overt politicization of children’s literature to a striking and active avoidance of political content. During the first decade of Israeli statehood children’s picturebooks decisively disencumbered the children of their former active political tasks, thus implementing a new politics of a civic society in a sovereign state.

In communist Poland in the 1950s, “comrade” Gianni Rodari was one of the most frequently translated authors: his works were published in the press and in book form. The aim of this paper is to investigate the first Polish edition of Tile of Cipollino. The novel was translated into Polish by Zofia Ernst in 1954, based on its first Italian edition (1951), significantly different from the next version – in 1957 the novel was modified by the author himself and is now known as Adventures of Cipollino. The paper focuses on the translation challenges and strategies employed by the translator and on issues related to presumed censorship.

The article discusses the treatment of the trickster figure in the Polish tradition of the “Puss in Boots” tale addressed to children. The analysis of the texts by Antoni Józef Gliński (1853), an anonymous author (1912), Ewa Szelburg-Zarembina (1954), Hanna Januszewska (1968), Milena Kusztelska (2009), and Robert Jarosz (2015) shows that the tale is often inscribed within the value system meant for the moral education and socialization of children. Depending on the emphasis put on this didactic intention, the ambivalent character of the cat can be either justified and absorbed by the established moral order, or excluded from it and condemned.

Doceniono wnikliwość autorki, zwłaszcza fragmenty poświęcone ustaleniu modelu XIX-wiecznej dobrej książki dla małego odbiorcy. The article indicates that this publication is necessary, concise description of the place and role of the book, made by a researcher who has been analyzing literature for children and adolescents for many years. The author’s insight was appreciated, especially the fragments describing a model of a 19th-century “good book” for children. Critical comments concern, among others, the vagueness of the prase “for young readers” used by the researcher.

Opis:
The present article aims at analysing the topic of children’s death in children’s books of the acknowledged authors: Astrid Lindgren’s The Brothers Lionheart and Vladislav Krapivin’s Alik the Striped Giraffe. The core of the research consists in the approach to the phenomenon of premature death as seen by both authors. The elements of the fictional universe, especially space, time and characters, in terms of constructing the particular approach to death and, by such, influencing the young reader are analysed. Moreover, the paper makes an attempt to interpret the plot as either taming the fear of the death or glorifying the life and objecting to the idea of death of children as a whole.

Opis:
The article tackles Jan Brzechwa’s first works addressed to children. The author presents the moment the collections Tańcowała igła z nitką and Kaczka Dziwaczka were created. The primary aim of the article is to show how Brzechwa’s first works of children’s literature collected in the above mentioned books were received by educators and literary critics. Another objective of the study is to depict how these books became a part of the national literary culture, using selected examples. The author achieved this goal by examining selected poems and showing how they gained popularity through reeditions issued by popular publishing houses, publication in anthologies of children’s literature, audiobooks read by popular actors, songs, on the Internet. The final aim of the article is to show to what extent quotes from Brzechwa’s selected works permeated the Polish language and became an essential part of the linguistic experience of contemporary Poles.
W artykule przybliżono pierwsze utwory adresowane do dzieci autorstwa Jana Brzechwy. Autorka pokazuje moment powstania zbiorków Tańcowała igła z nitką i Kaczka Dziwaczka.

In the article, the author tries to establish a new language for imaging the complex process of identification in adolescent girls in Terakowska’s work (especially in Lustro Pana Grymsa) in the light of girlhood studies. She revises the male-centered theories of Lacanian views on the child’s identity, the concept of “becoming-girl” of Pierre Péju, the mythopoetic reflection of Joseph Campbell, and contemporary feminist concepts on female identity (Lasara Allen, Pinkola Estés, Maureen Murdock). The subject’s analysis led her to conclude that analyzing Terakowska’s work can contribute to developing the “girl-method”. Terakowska constructs an uncanny way of thinking about “becoming-a-girl”, where she redefines the female archetype Femella – the divine girl and introduces the patterns of adolescent identity development in girls, which the author calls the second phase of the Mirror Stage.

Opis:
This contribution proposes a critical analysis focused on a selection of Italian contemporary children’s books conceived as reinterpretations of Carlo Collodi’s masterpiece Le avventure di Pinocchio (1883). Following a long-lasting tradition of works in which Pinocchio’s adventures are adapted, resumed, or actualised, a few books published in the early 21st century stand out because of their ability to establish a deeper dialogue with the original novel, its meanings, and its aspects of interest nowadays. The first work examined, Fabian Negrin’s picture book titled Occhiopin. Nel paese dei bei occhi (2006), is an upside-down reinterpretation of Pinocchio’s story that takes place in a contemporary setting. The second work is a novel by Silvano Agosti, Il ritorno di Pinocchio (2010), which tells the story of a night-time encounter between a little girl and a boy who claims to be Collodi’s most famous character. The third work, Alessandro Sanna’s silent book titled Pinocchio prima di Pinocchio (2015), retells the puppet’s fantastic birth through a series of evocative pictures that expresses the power of nature from a universal point of view. After the individual analyses of the three books, the final section aims to trace some peculiar similarities between them, firstly focusing on the social issues and childhood values identified in Negrin’s and Agosti’s works, and finally, through a comparison of their endings with Sanna’s work, discussing their common symbolic point of view.

Opis:
Asiago-born writer Mario Rigoni Stern, whose centenary of birth was celebrated in 2021, always took a great interest in young people, as amply demonstrated by his numerous talks at schools, where he often addressed ecological problems afflicting the Earth. His Il libro degli animali (1992), a collection of children’s stories illustrated by Xavier de Maistre, characteristically engages with environmental themes by expressing respect for the animal world and admiration for its beauty. Similar to ecological literature for children, Rigoni Stern’s book aims to highlight environmental problems and suggest possible solutions to them. Given this, it is dedicated to inspiring young readers to adopt an alternative way of life, one based on respect for nature and responsible/sustainable practices. This effort is combined with promoting symbiosis with land, as communion with nature is the only viable solution to many of the contemporary ecological problems. Employing ecocritical theories, mostly those related to environmentalism, this paper explores the way in which Rigoni Stern presents his standpoint on and ideas of the natural world to the young reading public. His approach makes Il libro degli animali part of the most complex ecological discourse that he developed in his long literary career.
