    Incorporating aquatic motifs into his novel Pathologies, Zakhar Prilepin ascribes different functions to them. Firstly, in ‘Chechen story’, water takes the form of rain that constitutes an ordinary, thought irritating, atmospheric phenomenon. However, when the young protagonists fight under siege in Chechnya, water acquires a symbolic meaning, becoming a dire portent of death. In the final scenes, set in Chechnya, water changes its connotation and saves the survivor Russian soldier’s lives. Besides, water plays in Prilepin’s novel (Epilogue) the role of catharsis: it is the river’s water where the author is reborn and ‘baptized’ so that soul was purified of the past sins related to upbringing and care for his adoptive son.

    Opis:
    Due to the limitations of the subjective (own competence) and the objective (article’s volume), I decided to focus on the phenomenon or rather a sense of humor and surrealism. I understand humor as a spe-cifically human power, sensitivity and individual way of feeling different comic phenomena (including absurd and ironic phenomena). Surrealism in visual arts (broadly – in the art of interlaced threads of the surreal) in the right way is testing the recipient’s (as creator) sense of humor. Surreal humor suspended between intellect, emotions and pleasure rarely becomes frustrating; more often – cathartic. It does not include any depreciating properties of laughter which may arise when there is a sense of superiority over the others. Humor contributes to taming the absurd, which is, nolens volens, an integral part of our lives. I search for answers to the following question: ‘What does surrealistic humor purifies in us?’. I analyze functions (anti-functions?) in surrealist objects by Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Meret Oppenheim, Oscar Dominguez, Marcel Jean, Marcel Marien and others.

    This paper ponders on the aftermath effects of beauty, the ugly, and the hypotheses on how to get rid of the ugly. Due to the impossibility of addressing the effects of something that is entirely unknown, the author first attempts, in lieu of a definition of beauty, to examine the three classical conditions for beauty, which will otherwise be respected as in some sense a mystery. Secondly, he turns to the effects of beauty by analogy to the six effects of love as elucidated by Thomas Aquinas; in addition, he adds three other effects of beauty found in classical Greek thought: catharsis, epiphany, and pleasure. Thirdly, he reviews, by way of contrast, the corresponding effects of the ugly; and then he proposes how the ugly can be “redeemed” by beauty.

    This paper deals with the conflict between faith and science. Since the issue is extensive, only selected aspects of this question are discussed. At first, the origin of the problem is outlined – it is argued, that the fundamental difference between the language and the method of science on one hand and of theology understood as a rational reflection on the truths of faith on the other is responsible for the conflict. Afterwards, two aspects of the conflict are presented – the first one concerns inconsistencies which appear on the plane of content – when some scientific statements or theorems seem to deny some theological claims; the second one involves differences in mentality and in worldview which appear on the plane of attitude. It is argued, that the content discrepancies can be eliminated with the help of two methods: of separation and of catharsis. But the differences in mentality which appear on the plane of attitude cannot be so easily eliminated. So finally the characteristics of these two different attitudes – of faith and of science – is discussed. It is argued, that a fundamental dissimilarity between the character of scientific knowledge (especially its empiricism) and of religious faith is a basic source of mutual estrangement and alienation.

    The Author of the essay asks the following question: do parents have licentia rhetorica for talking about their experience? In her analysis she primarily focuses on an Internet magazine „Bachor. Bezradnik dla nieudacznych rodziców („Brat. Helpless-guide for looser–parents”) which represents a very particular way of talking about the child, a way which varies from parents’ standard linguistic behaviour. The Author traces the fragments which include intentionally created non–literality and subsequently proceeds to reconstruct the types of reception she observed. At the same time, the Author ponders on the reasons why some recipients resist the possibility of nonliteral reading or why they object to it – and, as a result, read messages literally. The considerations are presented in a broader perspective of the reflection upon the media motivated social and cultural transformations of rhetorical standards of talking about the child.

    This text’s main objective is to introduce the assumptions of the Jungian depth psychology to the bibliotherapeutic process. Bibliotherapy as an interdisciplinary method using psychology and literary studies enriched with the theory of integral psychology formulates a new theoretical perspective and constitutes a proposition of holistic view of bibliotherapy. The extension of the theoretical basis of bibliotherapy will help to augment the therapeutic effect, activate the unconscious (the sphere neglected in school education), and strengthen psyche. Integral bibliotherapy shall create conditions to expand the dialogue between the rational side and unconscious one, and it will contribute to a positive stimulation of the integration processes. Providing archetypal patterns reflecting the rules of life in culture, and drawing attention to the regulatory role of literary works, will enrich both the intellectual and spiritual side of the development of the participant of the bibliotherapeutic process. Archetypal content present in literary texts studied by the participant according to the bibliotherapeutic procedure will achieve an integral orientation focused on the humanistic dimension of existence.

    Comparing the two interpretations of Medeas’s myth the author of the article is primarily interested in the problem of the perspectives of genre (tragedy as it was defined by Aristotle) in modern theatre. In this connection the most important aspect of the analysis is the esthetic, philosophical and social bases of tragedy. That is why Lubimov’s stage variant of the ancient myth seems to be the presentation of the specific moment – the maximal rapprochement between classical tragedy and Russian life of the 1990s. Medea staged 14 years later by Ginkas fixed the situation when such a contact was appreciated as impossible.

    The purpose of this paper is to exemplify the outstanding potential of literary narrations, and particularly the fairy tales, to foster resilience among primary school students. The starting point of these reflections is the mimetic-cathartic vision of a literary narration proposed already by Aristotle and then developed by such contemporary authors as Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre, David Carr, etc. The specific application of the general idea, according to which great literary stories have a powerful intrinsic pedagogical potential, is depicted with the use of the example of a classic tale by the Grimm brothers, The Girl Without Hands, which is a clear mimesis in both textual and figurative sense of a resilient character. Moreover, the traumatizing circumstances against which the resilient attitude develops in the protagonist are related to family background, which makes the story particularly up-to-date at present times in which we observe an outstandingly high divorce rate as well as many other types of problems affecting large numbers of children in relation with their families. A variety of “pillars” or “factors” of resilience are easily observable in the behaviour of the “girl without hands,” which converts the story into a remarkable and encouraging example of overcoming all sort of difficulties and obstacles which our students encounter on their own way towards a more complete integration and happiness.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zilustrowanie niezwykłego potencjału wzmacniania rezyliencji uczniów szkół podstawowych, jaki posiadają narracje literackie, a zwłaszcza baśnie. Punktem wyjścia tych refleksji jest mimetyczno-katartyczna wizja narracji literackiej, zaproponowana już przez Arystotelesa, a następnie rozwinięta przez takich współczesnych autorów, jak Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre, David Carr i inni. Konkretną egzemplifikacją ogólnego twierdzenia, że wielkie historie literackie posiadają znaczny potencjał pedagogiczny, jest analiza klasycznej opowieści braci Grimm Dziewczyna bez rąk, będącej doskonałą mimezą, zarówno dosłowną, jak i figuratywną, rezylientnego charakteru. Co więcej, traumatyczne okoliczności, na tle których objawia się rezylientny charakter głównej postaci, są związane z rodziną, co sprawia, że historia ta jest szczególnie aktualna w obecnych czasach, w których obserwujemy wyjątkowo dużą liczbę rozwodów, a także innego rodzaju problemy związane z rodziną, mające bezpośredni wpływ na rozwój dzieci. Różnorodność „filarów” lub „czynników” rezyliencji jest łatwo zauważalna w zachowaniu „dziewczyny bez rąk”, dzięki czemu ta narracja okazuje się być wyjątkowym i zachęcającym przykładem pokonywania wszelkich trudności i przeszkód, które napotykają również nasi uczniowie na swojej drodze do pełniejszej integracji i osobistego szczęścia.

    The article takes up the topic of mystical motif of catharsis present in Plato’s dialogues Phaedo and Republic as well as their links with the mysticism of the Ancient Greek mysteries. The philosophical catharsis is a result of touching the divine, transcendent Truth.
    Oczyszczenie (katharsis) to motyw typowo misteryjny (orfi cki). W misteriach orfi ckich oczyszczenia przybierały dwojaką formę. Pierwsze miały charakter ciągły i realizowały się w tzw. „życiu orfi ckim” (które jest jakby pierwsza formą „życia fi lozofi cznego”). Drugie spełniały się poprzez misteryjne wtajemniczenia, których istotę stanowiło duchowe doświadczenie boskości (nadprzyrodzoności). Motyw oczyszczeń w obu tych formułach odnajdujemy w dialogach Platona. Pierwsza przyjmuje formę tzw. „życia fi lozofi cznego”, które praktycznie realizuje ideał melete thanatu. Druga spełnia się poprzez dążenie do prawdy, a w punkcie kulminacyjnym przyjmuje postać duchowego doświadczenia prawdy absolutnej, którą okazuje się Bóg. Doświadczenie Prawdy absolutnej jest tu równoważne z misteryjnym wtajemniczeniem w boskość. Filozofi a w swym dążeniu do prawdy przybiera na poziomie duchowym formę filozofi cznych wtajemniczeń. Tym samym wszelkie dążenie do prawdy w formule platońskiej to niejako wejście w oczyszczające (i zarazem przyciągające) pole Prawdy absolutnej.

    Digital games have come a long way since their origins as pure entertainment and can no longer be easily brushed aside as a frivolous pastime. The past decade or so has seen the introduction of many narrative-intensive games that take the joy of watching a great story unfold and combine it with a sense of agency in the audience, in this case, the player, thus giving us a new form of dramatic narrative. Despite the seeming appropriateness, however, attempts at conjoining Aristotle’s Poetics to digital game scholarship have been contentious. This paper aims to show that there is great merit in viewing narrative games through the lens of the terms and mechanisms discussed by Aristotle, more specifically his outlining of the ground rules for the desired form of tragedy. Additionally, a more indepth definition of words like hamartia, catharsis, and mimesis and their application will show the appropriateness of such a method in arguing for the artistic and aesthetic worth of this new medium that is known for obfuscating the more familiar structures of other narrative forms. To support the argument, the paper relies on recent digital game discourse and uses Naughty Dog’s award-winning, and highly contentious game, The Last of Us Part II, to demonstrate how it fits the mould designed by Aristotle and why it deserves the title of tragedy.

    This essay provides a detailed exploration of interest in the Bible as a literary phenomenon. We start with Frye’s research in order to analyze academic perspectives that studied the Bible as a form of literary criticism. Among these perspectives, it is worth highlighting those that define biblical narrative as the principal element of the Western imaginative tradition. This phenomenon builds a set of interrelations that have shaped our specific literary tradition, imbuing it with this symbiosis between sacred and profane influences. Moving on to a second level of interpretation of the question at hand, we examine the encounter between secular and religious literatures as a consequence of the work initiated by Frye. The philological background of the writer C. S. Lewis is key and unprecedented in shedding light on the frontiers between reality and fantasy in the field of literary studies, as exemplified in The Chronicles of Narnia. The Narnia books allow their readers to experience catharsis. This experience  is foundational for the acquisition and cultivation of some character strengths, as the ancient Greek tradition held and put into practice centuries ago.

    The article outlines the issue of genre-transformation of tragedy in 19th-century Polish drama. The fundamental question is tragedy’s potential after liberation from the most important structural categories of the genre: the three unities, catharsis and anagnorisis. The discussion on the 19th-century patterns of tragedy, derived from contemporary theory, criticism, and theatrical production, are based on research by Marek Dybizbański, who presented an interesting analysis of the problem, which was an important indicator of contemporary literary thought, in his study called Tragedia polska drugiej połowy XIX wieku — wzorce i odstępstwa [The Polish Tragic Drama in Late 19th Century — Patterns and Divergence]. The issues discussed were: disproportion between expectations and effects, indicated by repertoires and contemporary debate on drama, lack of standard productions of tragedy, matched by great surplus of texts that tried to set the standard, and by programmatic declarations on how to do it. The author, following Dybizbański’s discussion, focuses on the question why the 19th century in Poland was, for tragedy, a lost time.

    Film parodies are now attracting more popular interest than at almost any time in their history except the first two decades of the 20th century (golden era of film parody). The contemporary renewal of parody is an attractive phenomenon of popular culture. To analyse and recontextualize this renewal of parodistic paradigm in film supporting by new media (spontaneous net art) Hendrykowski has compiled a wide-ranging panorama and collection of classic examples made by many famous but also unknown film-makers. Underlying the entire collection is the author’s personal belief that parody can be divers and rich as particular form of cultural rebellion and social catharsis – by turns comic effect and confusing dialogue in polemical confrontation with common opinion and public point of view established by parodied original.

    Ifigenia w Taurydzie Eurypidesa w interesujący sposób łączy w sobie to, co dzisiejsi odbiorcy opisaliby jako klasyczną grozę opartą na motywie traumy z dzieciństwa (z jednej strony) oraz inteligentną, metateatralną analizę działania mechanizmu (greckiej) tragedii. Okrutna, mściwa bohaterka owej sztuki jest zarazem skrzywdzonym, nieszczęśliwym dzieckiem uwięzionym w ciele dorosłej kobiety. Walczy z dręczącymi ją wspomnieniami w specyficzny sposób, w nieskończoność inscenizując scenę własnej śmierci z rąk rodzonego ojca, Agamemnona. Świątynia w kraju Taurów służy jej jako osobliwy „teatr w teatrze”, gdzie – wśród makabrycznych dekoracji wykonanych ze szczątków ciał greckich żeglarzy – dręczona wspomnieniami dziewczyna rytualnie zabija kolejnych przybyszów ze swej ojczyzny. Nieoczekiwana wizyta brata, Orestesa, okazuje się skutecznym lekarstwem na owo niekończące się cierpienie Ifigenii. W sztuce tej Eurypides nie tylko umożliwia odbiorcom osiągnięcie katharsis, lecz także – za pomocą środków metateatralnych – pokazuje im dokładnie, na czym owa katharsis polega; w jaki sposób ludzki umysł oczyszcza się ze szkodliwych emocji. Gdy tylko Ifigenia przestaje koncentrować się na własnym cierpieniu i przenosi swą uwagę na podobnie jak ona sama udręczonego Orestesa, odzyskuje utraconą równowagę umysłu. Jednocześnie publiczność – która, naturalnie, solidaryzuje się z bohaterami – także odczuwa ulgę. Ifigenia w Taurydzie jest więc „sztuką w sztuce”, która pokazuje, jak funkcjonuje dobrze skonstruowana tragedia.
    Euripides’ tragedy Iphigenia in Tauris is an interesting combination of something that today’s theatre-goers would describe as being a classic horror play based on the motif of a childhood trauma (on the one hand) and – on the other hand – a cleverly designed metatheatrical study of how the mechanism of (Greek) tragedy really works. The terrifying, cruel and murder-obsessed Iphigenia is at one and the same time a wronged, unhappy child imprisoned in the body of a grown woman. She struggles with her pain by re-enacting her own unaccomplished murder in a sinister „theatre within a theatre”, i.e. in the temple of Arthemis, where – among macabre decorations made from remnants of the bodies of those Greek sailors that she has slain so far – she ritually kills any further newcomers from her homeland. An unexpected visit by her brother Orestes proves to be an effective remedy for Iphigenia’s distress. In this play, Euripides not only enables his audience to achieve catharsis, but also – through metatheatrical means – shows us exactly how a human mind is purged of dangerous emotions: as soon as Iphigenia stops concentrating on her own pain and starts to sympathize with Orestes, her mind is cured, and she is restored to a state of happiness. At the same time, the audience – who sympathize wih the characters – also feel a sense of relief. Iphigenia in Thauris is therefore a play within a play that shows us how a good tragedy works.

    Opis:
    Marek Hendrykowski’s study is concerned with the close-reading analysis and interpretation of the Autobus (1955–1961) oil on canvas painted by Bronisław Wojciech Linke. This masterpiece of Polish peinture of the 1950s is deeply related to history and conditions of human life in Poland and other East European countries after World War II where everyday life is based on ideology imposed on society. Linke’s peinture gives emblematic ironic image of it created as an anti-social realist protest based on paradigm of Polish culture and art of the period.
