Objectives: The purpose of this text is to identify the main types of intergenerational relationships and methods of integration different generations applied in everyday life. Recognition of these practices should be used in inclusion policy. Research Design & Methods: This article uses qualitative methods of sociology, in particular biographical narratives (story of life) to explore types of intergenerational relationships. Findings: This paper finds that relational structures are an important part of every biographical narrative. Research has identified five types of intergenerational relationships. Implications / Recommendations: This article stresses the importance of biographical work and the restrictions on the creation of multigenerational groups as a fairly common way of integrating different generations. Contribution / Value Added: The approach presented in this article opens new possibilities for a policy of inclusion and ways of counteracting intergenerational conflicts.

The aim of the article is to introduce the author’s category of joint biographical involvement episodes (EWZB) into the space of educational discourse, especially in relation to adult education (including academic teacher training). The proposed EWZB category derives from the work of Rudolf Schaffer on episodes of joint engagement and is enriched with knowledge on biographical learning. The author notes that one of the volitional goals of adult learning is the desire to acquire wisdom, understood as an aspect of personality development in adulthood, and the basis for building it is learning based on the co-experience of both one’s own and Others’ biographies.

The concept of ‘biographical disruption’ has been a leading framework for studies of the experience of chronic illness. A symptomless chronic condition – bereft of bodily signs ‒ does not similarly present biographical disruption. People with elevated cholesterol are healthy at the same time as medical regimens signal sickness. The empirical material presented in this article, based on interviews with people with elevated cholesterol, suggests that a more appropriate metaphor could be ‘biographical work’ in such instances. The aim of this article is to discuss how people with the symptomless condition of elevated cholesterol continually construct elevated cholesterol in everyday life doing biographical work along shifting contexts. The vocabulary of biographical work constructs a subject who is continually working on building situationally-appropriate identities embedded in the shifting contexts of being sick or not sick. The article shows how people ongoingly ‘do’ elevated cholesterol, creating a mother-cholesterol-identity, a guest-cholesterol-identity et cetera, navigating the dilemma of absence of bodily signs (signaling healthiness) and medical regimens (indicating sickness) against shifting rhythms of biographical particulars in everyday life. Linkages of medical regimens with the rhythms of mothering, vacationing, being a guest et cetera create contexts – ever-emerging ‘cholesterol-biographical rhythms’ ‒ for accomplishing and stretching the cholesterol identity from situation to situation, being adequately compliant with medical regimens.

The aim of this paper is to present an autobiographical account on the prospects and process of academic career in Nordic countries, and specifically in Sweden. The method used is biographical, or self-ethnographic, dealing with life transitions including struggles and experiences when making the career. The point of departure is the final step in the academic career, i.e. Professorship, and reconstruction of the life events backwards, both as diachronic, a moment in time, as well as synchronic, over time dimensions. This includes research initiation, PhD writing, Postdoc experience, habilitation, and struggling to get a position of a senior lecturer and finally a professor. Involvement in various projects and international networking are presented. Biographical work and learning are used to understand how a woman researcher is navigating in a difficult male dominated terrain, including both negative and positive experiences.

What does an actor do in a biographical film? This question may seem inane, or at least less than serious; however, the terms frequently used to describe and assess the actors work in general - to embody a character, to play them, to play a role - suggests the existence of a certain designatum, which is the point of reference for the role. In the case of a fictional story, we may ignore the semantic multivalence of such terms. In a biographical film, however, the existence of a real originator of the role gives additional, almost ontological meaning to phrases such as “embodying a character” or “playing a role”. In my reflections, I use as my starting point the assumption that the actors performance in a biographical film and the “conception of a character” result from two basic components: 1. Interpretation of the role - constituting a proposal to analyse the heros character. It is usually supposed to extract more profound meanings and senses out of the biography. To put it more simply, the interpretation of the role is supposed above all to help the viewer to answer the question of who the hero was (what they were like) and why? 2. Adaptation - this includes the physicality of the character: their appearance, body language, facial expressions, voice (the tone, modulation, accent, phrasing, dialect - if the authentic person used one, etc.) In my article I try to answer the questions: Where should we seek the essence of biographic acting? How can we avoid exaggeration and falsehood, which could kill the role?

Processes of European identity formation are analysed here in terms of identity work and, specifically, relationship (interplay) between biographical and collective identity work. First sections of the text (1 and 2) are focussed on grounding the approach in a range of theoretical orientations (symbolic interactionism and culturalist perspectives), on outlining its methodological implications (the rationale for using the method of autobiographical narrative interviewing and various methods of text analysis), and, finally, on developing research questions and preliminary analytical dimensions of studying the collective identity work, especially in relation to European identity work, the latter being based on results of the author’s research on the minority nation society of Wales (e.g. collective identity constructions, and figurations, in terms of cultural periphery / centre, hybridity, and marginality). In the next step of analysis, these preliminary questions and dimensions are related to problems of European identity work in general. In the next section (3) overall heuristic strategies of the offered project are formulated: the attitude of refractive self-reflection, the dialogical principle of calibrating research interactants’ perspectives, a multi-layer approach to the interplay between individual experiences and a variety of collective meaning resources, the strategy of contrastive comparison of studied cases and, finally, the zooming procedure of focussing (coding) empirical materials. The last section of the text (4) relates to the objectives / expected products of the project concerning dimensions and integrated model of collective identity work in Europe, and their practical implications for a range of social / political activities in education, legislation, governance, as well as for NGOs, social arenas and social movements.

The subject matter tackled by Jakub Gałęziowski in his latest book Nieopowiedziane biografie. Polskie dzieci urodzone z powodu wojny [Untold biographies. Polish children born because of war — CBOW] includes testimonies of people who were conceived during the Second World War. An important aspect, however, is that these children were born from unions between the occupants and local women. The act itself may have been voluntary or forced, and the book refers only to the latter. The book is an important attempt to fill a large research gap that could not be filled for many years, due to communist rule in Poland as well as the women themselves or surrogate families concealing the truth.

Up to the middle of the last century, Jewry constituted of vibrant communities in the multicultural society of Egypt. Well embedded for many years into the cosmopolitan environments of Cairo and Alexandria, they remained in a way a separate world within the surroundings of the Muslim environment. Mutual influences took place in many areas and depended on various factors (such as origin, social status, education, etc.). The Jewish community was diverse and spoke many languages, developing complex forms of linguistic interaction. Arabic, in its dialectal form, served mainly, but not only, as a utility and simple communication vehicle. In memoir literature, the flow of which appeared after the expulsion of Jews from Arab states, naturally, Arabness is always more or less present. Two significant works of this genre, the memories of André Aciman from Alexandria and Lucette Lagnado from Cairo, evoke verbatim some words, phrases, expressions from the Arabic language. These references to the Arabic language are supposed to perform a special function: They are a kind of stylistic measure, adding authenticity and a picturesque quality to the fictionalized narrative, as well as recalling the linguistic reality in which the authors had to live in their childhood and youth.

Wśród wielu opublikowanych badań, społecznych diagnoz i refleksji teoretycznych dotyczących procesu transformacji w Polsce znaleźć można przede wszystkim rozważania dotyczące zmiany ujmowanej z perspektywy makrospołecznej w różnych jej aspektach. Ważnym uzupełnieniem takiego ujęcia badawczego i teoretycznego jest podejście biograficzne ukazujące, jak w doświadczeniu jednostek perspektywa przeszłości, rozumianej umownie/historycznie jako czas sprzed transformacji w 1989 roku, łączy się z perspektywą współczesności, czyli czasu przemian. Pokazanie transformacji przez pryzmat doświadczeń biograficznych, czyli aktorów społecznych, którzy jednocześnie stali się podmiotami, jak i przedmiotami owej zmiany, to jest współtworzyli proces przemian, jednocześnie mu podlegając, daje możliwość wielowymiarowego uchwycenia tego procesu. Artykuł przedstawia zatem korzyści badawczo-teoretyczne perspektywy biograficznej, zawiera krótki komentarz metodologiczny oraz przedstawia jeden z aktualnie realizowanych projektów poświęconych biograficznemu doświadczeniu transformacji.
The majority of empirical researches, diagnoses, and theoretical analyses regarding Poland’s transformation are constructed from the perspective of macro sociological approach. Biographical research can be treated as an important supplement of this perspective since biographical analysis serves to reconstruct collective processes, to grasp the mutual influence of individual experiences and macro socio-cultural processes of collective change and transition. The article presents main analytical and theoretical advantages of biographical approach in this respect, contains a brief methodological note, as well as characterizes one of the on-going projects based on the biographical experience of transformation.

At the centre of our interest is the construction of relationship between the work and the private life, based on empirical material from the PREWORK research project, devoted to the experiences of young Poles on the labour market. The main thesis of the paper is that within the context of the construction of relationships between the work and the private life of young Poles suffering from the construction of relationships between the work and the private life of young Poles suffering from precarious situation, the sphere of work is dominating the sphere of private life. The private life, in turn, just as professional career, is subject to secondary precarisation. On the basis of selected empirical cases (autobiographical narrative interviews using the method developed by Fritz Schütze) we analyze the ways in which the relationships between the work and the private life are presented in biographical materials. We place main emphasis on relationships between those two spheres as part of deepening or mitigation of precariousness which is treated as a potential source of trajectory, in the sense given to the latter term by Fritz Schütze.

The article presents a general characteristic of Stanisław Rospond’s academic and organizational activity in Silesia in the first years after World War II. This Polish and Slavic linguist, born near Cracow, a graduate of the Jagiellonian University, fascinated by the history of Silesia, moved to Wrocław in 1945. In that city, together with a group of professors from Lviv (Polish: Lwów), he set about rebuilding Polish academic research, organizing Polish linguistics with a focus on Silesian studies.

W nurcie współczesnych polskich spektakli biograficznych sporą grupę stanowią monodramy, inspirowane życiorysami słynnych osób. Jest to przejaw zainteresowania postaciami wyrazistymi, referencyjnymi – w przeciwieństwie do twórczości scenicznej końca XX wieku, z właściwą jej ekspansją bohaterów o nieukształtowanej bądź rozbitej osobowości. W artykule zanalizowane zostały monodramy-świadectwa i monodramy-rekonstrukcje. W pierwszym przypadku postać występuje jako medium nieobecnej rzeczywistości, świadcząc monologiem o sobie i o świecie zewnętrznym (to przykład tożsamości dialogowej). W drugiej odmianie monodramów dominuje ujęcie autotematyczne, co prowadzi do powstania sztuk meta-biograficznych (ukazana jest tożsamość performatywna, realizująca się w aktach kreacji własnego „ja”).
Monodramas inspired by the lives of famous persons constitute a large group of contemporary Polish biographical plays. It is a sign of interest in clear-cut and referential characters – in contrast to the end-of-the-20th-century stage creation, marked by a profusion of characters with an unformed or broken personality. This article analyzes monodramas-testimonies and monodramas-reconstructions. In the first case, the character acts as a medium of absent reality, giving testimony by means of monologue about oneself and the outside world (it is an example of dialogical identity). The second type of monodrama is dominated by an auto-thematic approach, leading to the creation of meta-biographical plays (a performative identity establishing itself in the acts of creation of one’s own “I” is shown).

The article suggests a reading of Nałkowska’s first work, treated as a literary study of narcissism. In Lodowe pola Nałkowska made an unsuccessful attempt to express the work through an inner narcissistic conflict, giving the protagonist, Janka Dernowiczówna, the qualities of narcissistic personality, such as individualism, dandyism, estheticism, Nietzscheism, atrophy of instinct, need for self-control, stage directing of life, and never-satisfied self love. The author also transferred her own feeling of emotional neglect by her mother in infancy onto the feeling of rejection of Janka’s proposal by Rosławski. The image and experience of “ice fields” as the emptiness of life, chaos, and powerlessness, becomes a metaphor of narcissistic “abandonment depression”, which became, in Nałkowska’s later work, a constantly present emotional mood and a source of artistic “tanatic imagination”.

This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common-sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career

One of the common and schematic descriptions in the perspective of the 1989 breakthrough are two ways of dealing with it by people who are respectively called winners or losers of transformation. These stereotypical characteristics are not only the tool to draw the general image of effects of the transition, but are also based on the specific way of interpretation deeply rooted, for example, in neoliberal thinking. Yet, from the perspective of an individual-so-called Schütz’s man on the street-the categorization of winners and losers not only simplifies the description of social reality, but also it cannot be easily biographically justified because the etic categorization is not always relevant to the emic perspective. In other words, the life history of an individual, showing the main phases and events of biography, and life story-the way that one interprets his/her biographical experiences- may not correspond to each other. The analysis of these two aspects of biography (what is lived through and how it is interpreted) shows how people have dealt with the process of transformation. In the paper, it is presented on the basis of one case study.

In this paper, we analyze the narrative strategies employed by horse racing gamblers in the context of their interactions within interviews. The empirical base consisted of 20 semi-structured interviews conducted with long-term regular gamblers from Warsaw, Poland. First, we state our position in the context of interviews with people aware they may be assessed negatively regarding a very important part of their lives. Second, we discuss how the interlocutors presented their biographies and employed discursive methods of protection against negative interpretation. The research reveals how bettors justify their passion by referring to individual myths about the origins of their interest in gambling. We reveal how bettors consciously employ emotive discursive methods that alleviate the discourse of addiction. Emotions are not presented as triggered by compulsively realized needs but as a result of intellectual passion, pursued by like-minded people joined by a drive for agency.

The aim of the article is to describe the situation of mothers who face alcohol problems of their adult children. We are primarily interested in female narratives, which are a reflection on the situation of mothers connected with adult children addicted to alcohol. We are trying to touch upon the essence of maternal experience. The inspiration for this presentation of the problem was a visible gap in the research carried out in the field of social sciences, which would concern directly the parents of harmful drinkers. The stage of designing and conducting the research, as well as the process of analyzing the collected empirical data, allowed for in-depth reflection on the experiences of the narrators in the context of femininity and motherhood. Prowadzone przez nas badania miały charakter jakościowy, umieszczone zostały w paradygmacie interpretatywnym (interakcjonizm symboliczny) wraz z wykorzystaniem metodologii teorii ugruntowanej.

The article discusses the issue of the so-called “new biography” by underscoring ambiguity of the term and presenting the different variants of “new biography” it encompasses. In order to do that, an introduction is made where the tenets of  the classical biography are outlined. The inquiry focuses chiefly on England and the USA, although remarks are also made with respect to biographical writing in other countries. It appears that the term is contemporarily mainly associated with Lytton Strachey’s model of biography which, having been formulated in 1918, proved  a breakthrough in life writing, since it operated with ironic detachment from the protagonist. Strachey perceived biography as an art and was determined to speak openly about all spheres of the biographee’s life. The article proves that although other  attempts at creating a “new biography” were made after Strachey (by Leon Edel and Jo Burr Margadant), their newness is either derivative and supplementary to Strachey’s achievement, or advances a wholly new notion of biography, with the concept of multiplicity of the protagonist’s self. As the Stracheyan biographical model is almost a century old, one can assume that what is understood as “new biography” is not  so new after all. In the meantime, though, biographical practice has taken a turn and  a novelistic mode of writing, i.e. biofiction, has become the current paradigm. The author therefore suggests that the present-day understanding of “new biography” be reconsidered by recognizing biofiction as one of the figures of biographical “newness”.

The conceptual category of the reasoning narrative is the starting point for the considerations presented. Looking at the concept through the prism of interpretative interactionism and the phenomenological and hermeneutic approach helps to discover the meaning and significanceof each of the perspectives for the discovery of wealth of understanding of everything that the human person is involved in and of the world he resides in, creates and converts to his own needs. The considerations in the text stress the importance of human reflection,ability to retrace feelings in the individual biography and of being able to interpret one’s own experiences. Presenting these considerations in the biographic-narrative orientation reveals the essence of understanding of the issues discussed in the article from the perspective of the experiencing subject.

The paper deals with the ethical aspects of the research process and contemporary changes in this field, which make the discussion on ethical dilemmas and concerns more dynamic and varied. Although in natural science and social sciences one can find a common ground related to the most general ethical principles. In the article I refer primarily to the social sciences. The article discusses three aspects affecting the dynamics of ethical discussions: the development of research in the field of natural sciences leading to many ethical dilemmas and forcing ethical codification of research proceedings also in the area of social sciences; the increase in sensitivity and social consciousness and not only awareness of research as such (processes of democratization, emphasizing human and animal rights, protection of minority rights, the process of individualization); the dynamics of contemporary social changes resulting from the development of technology, especially the Internet, which has become a global resource of data and their exchange. This forces qualitative researchers to consider the issue of data archiving, their reanalysis, and determining the boundary for creating Big Qualidata from them. The article discusses these three dimensions, with particular emphasis on the last of them, which will be commented on in relation to the specific methodological approach, which is biographical research.

This article presents the results of biographical research involving women and men over 60, with a focus on the issue of gender identity and how it changes during aging. The study provided answers to three main research questions: Are there distinguishable patterns of forming one’s own gender identity that are specific to senior age, and if so, which ones? Do the patterns change during the ageing process, and if so, how? What determines how a person experiences the transformation of their gender identity in senior age? The article also discusses the ways elderly men and women define their own femininity or masculinity and the significance in this regard of such biographical experiences as losing a spouse, retirement, and bodily aging. There is also an attempt at a typology of senior femininities and senior masculinities.

The main aim of the article is to examine the human’s attitude towards the other’s death. The field of research was limited to the death testimony of a parent in Polish literature after 1989, based on Mikołaj Łoziński’s Book (2011) and Marcin Wicha’s Things, I didn’t Throw Away (2017). The analysis was focused on the way in which the biographies of the deceased can be created by memories of them in the different phases of grief, and on the creation of intergenerational connections between the orphaned subjects and the material remains corresponding to the life of the dead.

In this article, I aim to reflect on the relationships between the researchers and those whom they investigate, referring to examples provided by classical biographical texts pertaining to the issues of poverty and social exclusion, i.e.: “The Polish Peasant in Europe and America” by William I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki and “The Jack-Roller. A Delinquent Boy’s Own Story” by Clifford R. Shaw Concepts of poverty or social exclusion are both “moral” and descriptive; therefore, research in the field is particularly susceptible to social valuing processes. This notion is extremely important in biographical research, where scholars thoroughly analyse the lives of informants. The scholar-informant relationships are inscribed in the frames of Othering and meeting the Other. These stances, replicated in later years, still resonate in sociological publications, in the dimensions of individual biographies, social relations between privileged and disadvantaged groups of social actors, and institutional solutions to social problems

Opis:
The main aim of this text is the attempt to demonstrate what kind of learning meanings are created when adult people justify success and failure in their lives. The question – what success means has inspired the individual narration about life experiences of the 40 plus generation. In Poland this age group is perceived as the stabilization generation, because of the fact that people at this age did not have to experience a war, communist oppression or martial law. They were educated before the year of political transformation in Poland in 1989 and their adulthood occurred after economic changes. As a result, the narrations’ analyses led to identifying the concepts of learning. They were: learning as the process of pursuit of economic independence (1), learning as creating job opportunities (2), learning as the result of assessment of one’s own competence by others (3). During the conversation (while being interviewed) it turned out that the language of narration was economic regardless of whether they were talking about their vocational or personal life. The analyses that followed should be only treated as a qualitative case study.

Based upon the original application to the European Commission, this article gives insights into the thinking of the Euroidentities team at the point that the project began. The question: Is the European ‘identity project’ failing? is posed in the sense that the political and economic attainments of the European Union have not been translated into a sense of identity with or commitment to Europe from the populaces that have benefited from them. The urgency of European ‘identity work’ is asserted with a number of levels for the construction of European identity being hypothesized. Euroidentities is intended to break conceptual ground by bringing together on an equal footing two apparently antagonistic views of identity – the collective and institutional and the individual and biographical – to give a more anchored and nuanced view of identity formation and transformation than either can provide on its own. Rather than following the dominant approaches to research on European identity that have been macro-theoretical and ‘top-down’, retrospective in-depth qualitative biographical interviews are planned since they provide the ideal means of gaining insight into the formation of a European identity or multiple identities from the ‘bottom up’ perspective of non-elite groups. The reliability of analysis will be buttressed by the use of contrastive comparison between cases, culminating in contrastive comparison across the national project teams between cases drawn from different ‘sensitized groups’ that provide the fieldwork structure of the project. The paper concludes with a summary of some of the more significant findings.
Artykuł powstał na podstawie aplikacji złożonej do Komisji Europejskiej przez zespół Euroidentities. Punktem wyjścia było tu pytanie o aktualny status „projektu“ tożsamości europejskiej w sytuacji gdy proces integracji obejmujący sfery ekonomiczną i polityczną nie przekładał się na budowanie poczucia tożsamości europejskiej. Propozycja badawcza pokazywała, iż odgórnie zaprojektowane z perspektywy elit (top down) działania, których celem jest tworzenie tożsamości europejskiej nie znajdują odzwierciedlenia w potocznym doświadczeniu zwykłych obywateli budujących poczucie identyfikacji przez biograficzne doświadczanie Europy. Artykuł przedstawia najważniejsze założenia projektu oraz sposób jego realizacji.

Men and women, who leave their countries, their families, their education and their work to undertake a journey. Some fleeing war, others terrorism, others poverty; looking for solutions, for themselves or for their loved ones. Some need medical care that they cannot access in their home country.  Each one has their own story and we simply do not know enough about them. Immigrants’ life histories can provide us with a lot of useful information that can help us understand the contemporary phenomenon of migration from pedagogical, sociological and economic points of view. The paths and trajectories of entire communities remain unknown, their needs unheard and the enormous wealth in terms of the relationships, the level of mutual help and the competences is neither brought to light nor properly evaluated. This paper, born of a series of biographical interviews carried out with adult immigrants from countries in West Africa, reflects on the relationship between education, work, and the communities to which the immigrants belong.

A systematic policy for treatment and management of chronic psychiatric patients in South Korea was begun with the passage of the Mental Health Act in 1995. The mentally ill patients who were previously separated from the society now have opportunities to live in local communities under medication with the help of rehabilitation facilities. This study aims to understand how mentally ill patients deal with their new medical environment. An autobiographic narrative analysis is methodically applied in order to link the social and the individual levels. Autobiographic narratives of illness show how the patient’s self-identity is formed and further developed according to the chronic conditions of his illness and the continual learning from experiences. In regard to the construction of selfidentity, two aspects should be taken into consideration: First, medication is absolutely necessary before patients can leave the hospital and participate in rehabilitation programs. Secondly, social integration is usually evaluated by the return of the patient into a normal biographical stage. It turns out that medication deprives the patients of control over their emotions, their bodies. Furthermore, their social environments – including family, friends and the labor market – work against them. Under these circumstances, mentally ill patients are liable to adhere to their own interpretation of mental illness, and what they experience is far different from the expectations of experts in the field. The new mental health environment also contributes to the formation of patient communities. As a result, chronic psychiatric patients are able to build their own subculture and to see themselves through their own eyes. Further studies are needed to explore whether and to what extent the ongoing improvement of social conditions for mentally ill patients has an impact on autobiographic narratives and self-identity construction.

The inspiration for this article was a project entitled “Crossing Borders: Activation of Disabled Seniors” carried out in the Daily Nursing Home run by Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Strzyży (Strzyża Friends’ Association) in Gdańsk, in the period between 15 June and 15 December 2015. The project focused on eliciting memories about the seniors’ past with the use of a biographical method and a narrative interview. The problems concentrate on the issue of de-somatisation and possibilities and modes of compensation. Referring to the therapeutic role of the biographical method, the author tries to find out if creating narratives supports the acquisition of sense of life and acceptance of the past in the context of traumatic childhood experiences.

The conditions of the lack of a lifetime partner in young adult singles’ perception The research field of this paper are the conditions of the lack of a lifetime partner in young adulthood. This research so called narrative-biographical interviews designed by Schütze was conducted with 36 participants not having partners (22 women and 14 men) in the age of 21–30 years. The foundation of the analysis was (1) Schütze’s narrative analysis and (2) hermeneutic analysis of autonarration used in the Bartosz’s research over motherhood. In the result of analysis participants’ responses were grouped into six categories of reasons for being single. Referring to respondents’ language they were called as follows: (1) “I haven’t met the right person yet”, (2) “I need time to recover from the break up”, (3) “My shyness stands in the way”, (4) “He/she doesn’t want me”, (5) “I’m a loner”, (6) “I work a lot”. The research results let us formulate the following general conclusions: (1) young adults indicate various reasons for being singled and which are of external and internal character and (2) in most cases young adults admit that it is hard to identify only one reason for singlehood which is often the consequence of many tangled circumstances.

Rapid changes in different spheres of social life (especially the commercialization of science, the digitalization of data, and the explosion of social media) have recently influenced definitions of research situations and approaches to findings in the social sciences. While various new standards from the natural sciences have been implemented, research situations have also been shaped by circumstances related to wider cultural changes, that is, by a sort of a cultural shift, especially in the sphere of new media communication. All these phenomena have revived the discussion of ethical issues. This article analyzes the current methodological status of biographical research as part of a professional ethic construed as the systematic exploration of the methodology used bybiographical researchers and the need for constant reflection on the research process. The article is devoted to different areas that may be associated with ethical concerns: the relationship between a researcher and an interviewee; problems related to the consequences of digital archiving; the proper style of doing research when there are strong expectations that the results will be disseminated; the possible consequences of using informed consent with the illusory expectation that it removes ethical dilemmas; and the practices leading to a professionalization of ethics.

The aim of the article is to present counselling as a place of learning for those who seek advice. The analysis of particular concepts of learning of adults presented in Mieczysław Malewski’s book From teaching to learning. The paradigmatic change in andragogics facilitates the description of various ways of learning, which may be inspired by finding yourself in a counselling situation. It is also used to develop the thesis. On the other hand, the adoption of the perspective of biographical learning, by Peter Alheit, is primarily used to reveal the sense and meaning of inner (trans)formation which is distinctive for those who benefit from the assistance of counsellors.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie poradnictwa jako miejsca uczenia się osób zasięgających porady. Analiza poszczególnych koncepcji uczenia się ludzi dorosłych wyłożona w książce Mieczysława Malewskiego Od nauczania do uczenia się. O paradygmatycznej zmianie w andragogice umożliwia opis różnych rodzajów uczenia się, które mogą zostać zainspirowane znalezieniem się w sytuacji poradniczej i służy rozwinięciu tej tezy. Natomiast przyjęcie perspektywy biograficznego uczenia się autorstwa Petera Alheita przede wszystkim jest wykorzystane do jako ujawnienia sensu i znaczenia (trans)formacji wewnętrznej, jaka jest udziałem korzystających z pomocy doradców

The article aims to explore the relationship between biographical work and the strategies of managing precarity (low-paid and unstable employment) and precariousness (insecurity and instability of life conditions in general) in Poland’s new capitalism. Poland witnessed the rise of precarity during the entire capitalist transformation after 1989, while the expansion of precarious, temporary, and non-standard employment accelerated in the first two decades of the 21st century. The main theoretical framework of the article is based on concepts deriving from biographical sociology and was elaborated during a joint workshop with German biographical researcher, Fritz Schütze, within the PREWORK project. The case of a young female shop assistant, Helena, with a difficult family and work background was selected from a larger sample of 63 biographical narrative interviews with precarious young workers in Poland. Based on the case study and the broader context of the research project, it is argued that biographical work may have the potential for questioning and challenging precarity; yet, without necessary biographical and social resources, such a process is hard to be completed. As a result, the paper questions the macrosocial vision of “precariat” as the “class in-the-making” and instead offers a detailed account of the microsocial ways of dealing with precarity by a representative of the most disadvantaged group of precarious young workers.

The rapid integration of technology in EFL learning and teaching requires competent EFL teachers to use Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in their classes. Hence, the role of CALL teacher education in preparing competent EFL teachers is significant. However, conducting CALL teacher education is not without challenges. Given the importance of examining these challenges, the purpose of the current study was to investigate Iranian EFL teacher educators’ voice about the challenges of conducting CALL teacher education programs. To that end, eight Iranian EFL teacher educators’ biographical narratives were analyzed to obtain challenges concerning CALL teacher education. The thematic analysis of the narratives, based on the principles of ethnography semantics, indicated that challenges such as inertia, ignorance of training CALL educators, insufficient time to address CALL compared to other topics, insufficient infrastructure, insufficient standards, and lack of established methodology to administrate CALL teacher education were among the main obstacles of conducting CALL teacher education in the Iranian context. Moreover, the findings revealed that lack of EFL teachers’ motivation to participate in such programs, insufficient CALL infrastructure in schools and institutes, and EFL teachers’ inertia were other challenges in CALL teacher education. The findings suggest that the stability of CALL can be reached by removing the challenges of CALL teacher education if policy-makers address issues such as the required budgets, CALL infrastructures, and teacher motivation in CALL teacher education.

The article is about the works of Kazimierz Braun - stage director, expert in the field of theatre, author of literary works. It recalls this artist and researcher as a theatre authority, but also it shows the authorities that formed him as an artist. Moreover, this text reveals the meaning of the figure of authority in Braun’s literature on the example of the biographical dramas he wrote. The main purpose of this article is to analyse the influence of authorities on Braun’s understanding of artistic activity, his creative strategy and its implementation in selected cultural texts. The terms of authority as a task, a challenge and an obligation in the title of the article referred to different areas of Braun’s activity, which, on the one hand, indicate the impact of authority, but on the other hand, show the way to gain it.

In this article I analyze the forced resettlement/deportation in the narratives of Poles and Ukrainians, who between 1944 and 1946 were “repatriated” from former Borderlands to the “recovered lands” or from South-Eastern Poland to the Soviet Ukraine, and in the memory of their descendants. The empirical base of the analysis were interviews conducted during monographic research in two small towns in Poland and in Ukraine, Krzyż and Zhovkva. The text attempts to answer questions of whether the memory of the displacement among the interviewees from these two places has anything in common, what are the reasons of differences, and how the memory of displacement operates among the younger people in the families. Social and individual context of biographical memory were also analyzed.

In the paper the issue of dreams elder people have is discussed. First, definitions of dreams are explained, as day-dreaming and night dreams. The author discusses night dreams, its role in human life, and meaning in culture, especially in Christian religion, mainly the Bible. Then she points to therapeutic role of night dreams discussing in care centers for the elderly. And day-dreaming is important for emotional sphere of human life. Finally the author analyses 31 in-depth interviews conducted by her students with elder people. What where their dreams in the past, when they were children, how dreams changed in their youth, adulthood and what are their dreams now. In the end the author points to the Golden Dream Foundation which helps people to fulfill their dreams and concludes how important it is for the elderly to have a possibility to fulfill their dreams and advance their life quality.

The article is an analysis of a single case-a biographical narrative of a Tri-City resident who enters adulthood at the beginning of political transformation in 1989, and whose life path turns out to be an unintentional, dynamic journey between various professions, social worlds and structural positions. This creates a complicated and ambiguous biographical pattern which does not fall into either the socio-economic promotion of the “winner” or into the degradation of the transformation “loser.” The reconstruction of this pattern reveals the hero’s great resourcefulness and entrepreneurship, but also the fragility of the structures stabilizing his life and the volatility of life orientation points. The binder of this biography turns out to be, above all, reflexivity and, what I suggest calling, the narrative agency of the narrator, who can transform his structurally dispersed and chaotic life experiences of the time of transformation into a very original story, making him a strong subject of his own fate. This, however, creates the inevitable tension between the experienced or lived life, life history and the narrated life, life story, prompting us to again pose the question about the commonly assumed, although differently defined, correspondence between the level of reality and the level of its linguistic (in this case-autobiographical) representation.

Young workers are the category of people who experience precarity and precariousness the most. This article explores the work experiences of the young precarious workers as an important component of constructing their social identity. It focuses on the problems with sense of professional identity, biographical sense of work experiences and the processes of transition to adulthood in the context of insecure earnings and permanent uncertainty. It also deals with the lack of control over time and future life plans and the alienation of work. As a consequence of precariousness, young people need to cope with traps of uncertainty, poverty and helplessness. The article is based on the analysis of biographical interviews with young people aged 18-30 years old in low-paid temporary jobs, low paid open-ended contracts, traineeships and the unemployed. The whole collection contains 70 interviews. The article focuses on ten cases which represent more general properties of work experiences. The analysis enables us to address emerging questions concerning the relationships between constructing biography and the experience of work and to formulate tentative conclusions from the ongoing research.

Na gruncie andragogiki rozwijane są teorie wyjaśniające fenomen uczenia się człowieka dorosłego pozostającego w związku z biegiem jego życia. Wśród nich wymienić można teorię biograficznego uczenia się i teorię narracyjnego uczenia się. W tekście przedstawiono ich założenia oraz podjęto próbę wskazania elementów wspólnych i różnicujących te dwa rodzaje uczenia się. Biograficzne uczenie się i narracyjne uczenie się współistnieją ze sobą, są sobie bliskie, w niektórych zakresach się pokrywają. Obydwa procesy należy łączyć z uczeniem się z życia oraz z procesem całożyciowym. Ich istotnymi elementami są: (re)konstruowanie narracji, refleksja, interpretowanie, wyjaśnianie i nadawanie subiektywnych znaczeń doświadczeniom życiowym. Istotą biograficznego uczenia się jest refleksja nad biografią własną lub Innych. Narracyjne uczenie się zachodzi zaś w akcie opowiadania. Obejmuje ono pełny zakres doświadczeń stanowiących przedmiot opowieści, wykraczając poza doświadczenia tylko biograficzne.
On the basis of andragogy there are developed theories explaining the phenomenon of adults learning which is connected with their life. The article presents biographical learning theory and narrative learning theory. Based on theoretical assumptions the author attempts to identify common and differentiating elements of these two types of learning. Biographical learning and narrative learning coexist with each other, as well as overlap in some areas. Both processes should be combined with learning from life and the lifelong process. Their essential elements are narrative (re)construction, reflection, interpretation, explanation and making meanings of life experience. The essence of biographical learning is reflection on autobiography or the Other biography. Narrative learning takes place in the act of storytelling. It goes beyond just the biographical and includes the full range of narrated experience.

Looking at today’s research practices applied in the area of social sciences one can notice a clear interest in biography. Observation of the lives of individuals, (re)cognition of social micro worlds from the perspective of individual biographies and analysis of and searching for meanings of individual life experiences are the subjects of great interest as well as confidence among researchers. It is also noticeable that researchers, with even greater attention and concern, contemplate the methodological legitimacy and correctness of the projects they carry out. This is especially important when there is a necessity to problematize and further specify the methodological identity of the biographical approach. This text is a voice in the discussion about the types and nature of the so-called biographical research conducted in the area of andragogy. Its starting point is viewing the research that uses biography through the lens of the biographical research perspective, which may adopt at least three forms: biographical approach, auto/biographical approach and autobiographical approach. The considerations revolve around reflections about specifying the individual approaches in relation to certain research projects taking into account the specific role/roles played in them by the researcher-andragogue. The text also addresses the topic of understanding the research process from the perspective of the learning process. The reflections are based on the individual experiences of the researchers acquired during the project in which the auto/biographical approach was applied.
Przyglądając się współczesnym praktykom badawczym realizowanym w obszarze nauk społecznych, można dostrzec wyraźne zainteresowanie biografią. Obserwacja losów jednostek, (roz)poznawanie mikroświatów społecznych z perspektywy indywidualnych biografii, a także analiza i poszukiwanie znaczeń indywidualnych doświadczeń życiowych człowieka cieszy się dużym zainteresowaniem, ale również zaufaniem wśród badaczy. Można także dostrzec, iż badacze z coraz większą uwagą i rozwagą zastanawiają się nad prawomocnością i poprawnością metodologiczną realizowanych przez siebie projektów, co jest szczególnie ważne w sytuacji konieczności problematyzowania i dookreślania tożsamości metodologicznej podejścia biograficznego. Niniejszy tekst jest głosem w dyskusji na temat rodzajów tzw. badań biograficznych realizowanych w obszarze andragogiki oraz ich istoty. Punktem wyjścia jest postrzeganie badań z wykorzystaniem biografii przez pryzmat biograficznej perspektywy badawczej, która przyjmować może przynajmniej trzy formy. Są nimi: podejście biograficzne, podejście auto/biograficzne i podejście autobiograficzne. Osią rozważań staje się refleksja związana z dookreśleniem poszczególnych podejść w odniesieniu do konkretnych projektów badawczych, z uwzględnieniem specyficznej roli/ról, jaką pełni w nich badacz. W tekście zostaje również zasygnalizowany wątek odnoszący się do rozumienia procesu badawczego z perspektywy procesu uczenia się. Źródłem podejmowanych rozważań są indywidualne doświadczenia badaczek, płynące z realizacji projektu, w którym wykorzystano podejście auto/biograficzne.

Artykuł prezentuje podstawowe założenia dotyczące dylematów etycznych w wykorzystujących fotografię badaniach biograficznych. Punktem wyjścia jest wskazanie na tradycję wykorzystania fotografii w badaniach biograficznych oraz wyszczególnienie specyficznych cech kultury wizualnej w kontekście badań biograficznych. Następnie opisane zostają główne dylematy etyczne badań wizualnych – świadoma zgoda oraz procesy anonimizacji. Zostają one skonfrontowane z opartymi na wynikach badań empirycznych dylematami użytkowników fotografii jako medium zachowywania i komunikowania biografii.
The paper presents basic assumptions concerning ethical dilemmas in biographical research using photography. The starting point is the indication of tradition of using photography in biographical research and the specification of features of visual culture in the context of biographical research. Then the main ethical dilemmas of visual research are described – informed consent and anonymisation processes. They are confronted with dilemmas based on empirical research results that arise from the users of photography as a medium for preserving and communicating biography.

The article focuses on the analysis of the autobiographical narrative interview with Helga Kuske. Narrator, born in the post-war decade, in East Germany, experiences biographically the symbolic universe of the German Democratic Republic as well as the trajectory associated with the biographical difficulties of coping during the systemic transformation. Case study of Ms Kuske life story oscillates between an attempt to capture her biography in the context of the post-war history of East Germany and a study of her life history with reference to the concept of the symbolic universe of Berger and Luckmann. The text also aims to show the relationship between individual biographical experience and collective processes on the example of the impact of GDR mechanisms on the process of the controlling the life course of the GDR population. 
Artykuł skupia się na analizie autobiograficznego wywiadu narracyjnego z Helgą Kuske. Narratorka, urodzona w powojennej dekadzie, w Niemczech Wschodnich, doświadcza biograficznie uniwersum symbolicznego Niemieckiej Republiki Demokratycznej, a także trajektorii związanej z trudnościami biograficznymi radzenia sobie w okresie transformacji systemowej. Analiza przypadku Pani Kuske oscyluje między próbą uchwycenia jej biografii w kontekście powojennej historii Niemiec Wschodnich a studium historii jej życia w odniesieniu do koncepcji uniwersum symbolicznego Bergera i Luckmanna. Tekst ma także na celu wskazanie zależności między jednostkowym doświadczeniem biograficznym a procesami kolektywnymi na przykładzie działania wschodnioniemieckich mechanizmów kontrolowania przebiegu życia mieszkańców NRD.

This article explores the selected cases of the biographies of right-wing supporters from a larger sample of narrative interviews with young (18-35 years old) people in Poland and Germany. In the existing literature, we can find the socio-economic explanations of the sources of the right-wing turn (related to economic deprivation, precarisation, social exclusion, labor market competition with immigrants and others), as well as cultural explanations connected with new identity politics, symbolic exclusion and divide between society and political elites, the disembedding from previously solid communities, and the fear of new risks related to the inflow of cultural Others. Despite notable exceptions, it is rather uncommon to discuss in this context the actual biographical experiences of right-wing and far-right supporters. In the article, we take a closer look at four biographical cases of people declaring their political support for far right parties. The analysis of the cases leads to the distinction of socio-economic and socio-political pathways to right-wing populist support.

The article is devoted to biographical writing, which by the methodologies of the 20th century was thrown out of the field of humanities research. It returns in the new century with cultural anthropology, gender studies and – above all – memory studies. However, it raises a lot of questions, including doubts about the representation (author of the biography) and witnesses of events. The author of the article compares the work of a biographer with the work of an archaeologist who verifies the sources and reconstructs the whole on the basis of the background and contexts of time and place. In the biographer’s work, however, he notices one more element: research subjectivity, which in a world filled with nostalgia, we are not able to negate or eliminate.

This paper was inspired by the debate between Hammersley (1999), Atkinson and Delamont (2009) and Denzin and Lincoln (2009 [2008]) on the dynamics of qualitative methods development and by the unsettling reductionism and fragmentation of analyses within qualitative research revealed by Atkinson. Similar critique of superficiality in biographical methods has also been formulated by scholars from the interpretative sociology tradition in Łódź (Czyżewski, 2016; Kaźmierska, 2012; Konecki, 2019; Piotrowski, 2016; Waniek, 2019), whose work is applied in pedagogy. The biographical research I conduct in small local communities reveals shifts in the positioning of research participants, but also alterations in the dynamics of grassroot inquiry initiatives in line with Participatory Inquiry Paradigm as described by Heron and Reason (1997). This article aims to characterize the “new” type of research participants, who organize and are involved in (non-academic) “research/amateur teams” within local communities, becoming collective agents of social action. Does it mean that the new “social/research awareness” (Heron & Reason, 1997) of both local actors and academic scholars who “join forces”, along with easy access to the sources, transnational links, and higher level of education trigger grassroot potential of pro-social behavior and a multi-level, polyphonic (Clifford, 1983), conscious and subconscious participation in the life of local communities?

The article describes an innovative method of qualitative research called collective biography writing (CBW), which is not known at all in the pedagogical research of the region of Central and Eastern Europe. CBW is focused on intensively felt, suggestive memories which are analysed collectively according to a given methodological procedure. CBW may be applied to discover complex conditioning and contexts of individual’s functioning, thanks to which we may try to answer the questions about what we really know about ourselves, others and the reality. The ultimate aim of using CBW is the exposure of what “life” as such looks like, how the world functions, what reality is like and what happens in it – the aim is understanding.

In this paper, two new and one established researcher (from Germany, Italy, and the UK) dialogue about researching professional biographies in education. The authors seek to build on a personal and scientific conversation to illuminate the critical and reflexive epistemological potential of particular perspectives in challenging the constraints of neoliberal discourses in education. The doctoral studies of the new researchers illuminate the limited conceptualisations of professionalism, shaped by dominant discourses pervading higher, adult and early childhood education. The two new authors explore similarities and differences in their work, including research questions, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, empirical data and interpretation. Biographical interviews and co-operative inquiry are used to collect stories about professional identity and ways of knowing. A common finding is that professionalism encompasses deeply personal dimensions in what is a complex conscious and unconscious, cognitive and emotional dynamic. Professionals can feel subjected to external standards and disempowered by constant audit and they must negotiate who they are within these parameters. The exploration of the interplay of past and present spheres of uncertainty fundamentally challenges technocratic and instrumentalist discourses and illuminates the diverse ways of knowing implicated in being a good enough creative and questioning professional. The authors conclude by arguing for a holistic re-conceptualisation of professionalism, as necessarily both personal and professional; and they conceive ‘reflexive irritation’ to be a site of epistemological struggle in this regard. There is also a discussion on related methodological and ethical issues.

If lifelong learning is researched using an approach based on biography theory, the various aspects of that approach would provide ways of reflecting upon that. Biographical education and training processes must be understood not only as appropriational and constructional accomplishments, given the individual and reflexive organisation of experience, knowledge and ability. They also include the biographical formation of social networks and processes, of collective knowledge and collective praxis, which can be also understood theoretically – as in Berger & Luckmann – as “institutionalisation”, as the formation of social networks and “social capital” or as the crystallisation of cultural practices (empirical examples include the formation of cultural and social centres, associations, local community initiatives, etc. It holds true for these collective formation processes, too, that they are explicitly negotiated and reflexively planned only to a partial extent. Social formations, such as new models and experiential contexts for possible educational routes, for potential women’s and men’s biographies, for gender relations, for learning processes and forms of interaction between cultures and generations can ensue even from the uncoordinated, biographical praxis of individuals in educational matters. If we conceive of biographical learning as a self-willed, “autopoietic” accomplishment on the part of active subjects, in which they reflexively “organise” their experience in such a way that they also generate personal coherence, identity, a meaning to their life history and a communicable, socially viable lifeworld perspective for guiding their actions, it becomes possible to comprehend education and learning both as individual identity work and as the “formation” of collective processes and social relations.

The article discusses the concept of Olga Tokarczuk’s “tender narrator”, which was demonstrated in her Nobel speech, and developed in a book entitled “Tender Narrator” (Tokarczuk 2020). The writer’s proposed way of describing the narrative and narrator was used to examine the concept of the biographical narrator, his bond with a hero, the truth and the fiction in the biography, the process of discovering and finding a purpose to existence. Olga Tokarczuk’s idea was discussed in the context of other useful theories aimed at the search for meaning: a reference to the concept of the course of life of Charlotte Bühler (1933/1999) and the will to make sense of Viktor E. Frankl (1948/2018, 1982/2017, 1988/2018, 1992/2018) allowed us to see a common ground for reflection on the role and specificity of biographical narrative. On the one hand, Agata Bielik-Robson’s concept (2004) on the trauma of the present highlighted the need for retrospective life storytelling and its therapeutic, reparative nature. On the other hand, the personalistic norm (in its original sense proposed by Karol Wojtyła in “Love and Responsibility” of 1986), according to which the only appropriate way to refer to a person is love, turned out to be close to the model of “tender narrator”. The extensive conceptualization of that idea, proposed by Olga Tokarczuk, compared to the concept of biographical narrator and the concepts mentioned above, allows for a reconsideration of the important issues discussed earlier: the “tender narrator” model turned out to be inspiring for attempts to rethink the adequacy of biographical representation, the objectivity vs. involvement of a biographer, and the relationship between biography and literature.

This article aims to answer the question of the biographical meaning of the pandemic in the experiences of so-called “essential workers” who performed their duties in the first line of struggle with the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis. The analysis of workers’ experiences helps us contribute to the ongoing debates on the role of macro-level events in autobiographical storytelling and the discussion on biographical turning points in sociology. The empirical analysis is based on a collection of more than 80 biographical narrative interviews in healthcare, social care, education, and logistics, from which we selected two stories of the pivotal significance of the pandemic crisis for biographical change for analysis. Biographical analysis makes it possible to describe which conditions are conducive to the inclusion of the pandemic in the main biographical story as a turning point.

Life history is a term usually assigned in the history of historiography to the Italian school of microhistory. In fact, it is a concept typical for the natural sciences in the case of which it is a framework focused on studies of life history strategies as well as life cycles. Life history analysis has become the subject of numerous studies around the world and has been gaining in popularity in social sciences. The author presents life history as a certain research perspective for historical studies which is capable of incorporating both natural and cultural approaches. He draws inspirations of the life history perspective from recent research into history of modern Poland.

Artykuł ma na celu zakwestionowanie sensowności tych interpretacji Panien z Awinionu, które poszukają jego znaczenia odwołując się do stanu umysłu Picassa w okresie, w którym obraz powstawał i traktują to dzieło jako wyraz zmagania się artysty z osobistymi demonami. Oferowana tu interpretacja obu wersji obrazu wskazuje, że był on odpowiedzią na Le Bonheur de vivre Matisse’a i zarazem jego krytyką. Co więcej, odwołanie się do teorii Lacana pozwala autorowi nie tylko objaśnić pozorne niekonsekwencje Panien z Awinionu, lecz także pokazać, że ostateczna wersja tego dzieła jest metaobrazem, który ukazuje proces powstawania reprezentacji.
The paper argues against interpretations of Les Demoiselles that look for its meaning in Picasso’s state of mind and treat it as the expression of a struggle with his personal demons. Rather, it interprets both versions of the painting as a response and contrast to Matisse’s Le Bonheur de vivre, which is proposed as the main intertext of Les Demoiselles. Moreover, an excursus into Lacanian theory allows the author not only to explain the supposed inconsistencies of Les Demoiselles, but also to propose that in its final version it is a meta-painting which analyses the way representation comes into being.

Many researchers argue that the analysis process of any narrative and biographical inquiry is a delicate, arduous and complex stage and requires creativity, advanced skills and the technique of the researcher. This research note, based on a research project carried out in Spain, makes a unique contribution to this debate by reflecting about the Cross-Narrative Model, whose father was Lewis (1973), introducing two concepts: Biographical Units and the Analysis Units. Furthermore, it describes the analysis process laying emphasis on the particular methodological challenges and possible benefits of using these units to build up a two-part biographical account. This research note concludes that the use of the Cross-Narrative Analysis model could be considered as a possible alternative to the on-going discussion on advancing the rigorous and resourcefulness narrative qualitative analysis endeavour.

The systematic research in the fi eld of the history of historiography at the University of Rzeszow ought to be connected with the establishment of the Department of History of Historiography and Methodology of History at the Institute of History in 1993. Th e cooperation with scientifi c circles from Poland, Austria, Germany and Ukraine led to the production and publication of a number of papers on the historical community of Lviv (until 1939) as well as theoretical studies on the history of historiography and biography. Owing to the rich ethnic and cultural mosaic, the former capital of Galicia created a unique opportunity to develop methodological concepts that introduced new fi elds of analysis and interpretation of sources. In the undertaken studies, we managed to combine a traditional, elitist and personalistic way of looking at a historical environment in cultural contexts, including areas where historiography the history of culture meet, and so do thehistory of education, the methodology of history, and the history of institutions, archives, libraries and scientifi c societies. Th e aim at that time was to focus on the problems of Polish and Ukrainian historiographies that created nations, the teaching and popularization of history, national heroes, and the role played by historians in the socio-political life of the Polish and Ukrainian nations. Particular att ention was drawn to the processes of forming the history of historiography and methodology of history as separate historical subdisciplines, and Ukrainian scientifi c achievements in these fi elds were analyzed and the trends of their further development were pointed out. The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

The author reflects on time, in particular in relation to andragogical research carried out with biographical approach. She presents briefly the phenomenon of time in academic reflection. She shows the historical context of biographical studies abroad and in Poland, particularly in andragogy, including those carried out by the Łódź School of Andragogical Research. The author also demonstrates the perspective of time in relation to the phenomenon of biography with its social and cultural as well as individual contexts. She suggests the importance of longitudinal research on time in biography.

This article explores the use of biographies in qualitative research about collective memory. It is argued that commemorative ceremonies, as well as changes appearing in macro-level structures within the time-span of individuals’ life histories need to be included when analyzing biographies in collective memory studies. The article suggests enhancement of the biographical case reconstruction method (Rosenthal 1993; 2004) with two additional stages: analysis of the experienced past with more emphasis on socio-historical transformations; and inclusion and analysis of the ethnographical data collected from collective mnemonic practices. By providing empirical data from the research conducted with political exiles in Germany, these analytical steps of the method of socio-historical analysis are demonstrated in detail.

Metoda biograficzna od początku swojego istnienia stosowana była w socjologii do badania doświadczeń osób i grup „marginalnych”, wykluczonych, znajdujących się poza głównym nurtem społeczeństwa. Procesy biograficzne przedstawicieli grup społecznie defaworyzowanych nie pozostają bez związku z osobami i instytucjami udzielającymi im profesjonalnego wsparcia. Biografie osób doświadczających różnego rodzaju życiowych trudności z jednej strony mogą stanowić świadome narzędzie mającej wzmocnić klienta pracy „profesjonalnych pomagaczy”, z drugiej – mogą być przedmiotem ich niekoniecznie celowego, ale destrukcyjnego oddziaływania. W prowadzonych od niemal dwudziestu lat łódzkich badaniach nad biedą, jej utrwalaniem się i dziedziczeniem zbierane są biografie osób doświadczających ubóstwa, będących klientami pomocy społecznej i innych instytucji świadczących profesjonalne wsparcie. Artykuł koncentruje się na wyzwaniach i dylematach związanych z realizacją badań z udziałem klientów instytucji pomocowych. W tekście zamierzam pokazać, że wielokrotne kontakty narratorów z przedstawicielami służb społecznych oraz ich nieuprzywilejowana pozycja społeczna mogą wpływać na proces badania socjologicznego z zastosowaniem wywiadu biograficznego w różnych jego wymiarach. Empiryczną podstawę artykułu stanowią jakościowe badania o charakterze biograficznym z udziałem nastoletnich rodziców z łódzkich „enklaw biedy”.
From its very beginning, the biographical method has been applied to studies on the marginal, excluded, beyond-mainstream individuals and groups. The biographical processes of people experiencing economical and social deprivation may be related to people and institutions providing professional support. Biographies of individuals experiencing various hardships in their life may, on the one hand, serve as tools used by professional helpers to empower their clients, but, on the other, may become the subjects of destructive influence of social service institutions and their representatives. In the research on poverty, poverty perpetuation, and poverty transmission, carried in Lodz for many years, the biographies of poor people, clients of social welfare and other helping institutions have been collected. The article attempts to reflect on the influence of the narrator’s experiences as a social service client and on his/her underprivileged social position on different dimensions of the process of sociological research with the use of biographical interview. The empirical ground of the text is a field study with participation of the teenage parents from Lodz “poverty pockets.”

Przedmiotem artykułu jest projekt edukacyjny Życiorysy lokalne. Piszemy biografie bohaterów lokalnych z Turku i powiatu tureckiego realizowany przez uczniów I Liceum Ogólnokształcacego im. Tadeusza Kościuszki w Turku w ramach współpracy szkoły z Wydziałem Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza. Autorka przedstawia historię wspólnych działań z zakresu biografistyki i dokumentalistyki – od wyboru postaci z lokalnej historii, poprzez gromadzenie materiału, sposoby jego przedstawienia, aż po efekt końcowy, którym były publiczne prezentacje i wydanie książki zawierającej dziewięć szkiców biograficznych. Opowiada o spotkaniach z bohaterami i świadkami zdarzeń oraz miejscach, z którymi związane były wybrane postacie. Opisuje metody pracy pozwalające uczniom na zdobycie umiejętności z zakresu różnorodnych form pisarstwa biograficznego. Materiał zilustrowany został fragmentami szkiców stworzonych przez uczniów oraz fotografiami z realizacji projektu.  
The main idea of this article is the educational project entitled The local backgrounds. We are writing the biographies of the local heroes from Turek and Turek County conducted by students of Tadeusz Kosciuszko High School in Turek with the cooperation of the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The author presents the story of cooperation in writing biographies and documentation – from the choice of the local character, through collecting the material and ways of showing it, to the final result, namely, public presentations and publishing the book containing nine biographical sketches illustrating activists, people of local history of the 20th and 21st century. The article tells the story of meeting the heroes and witnesses of the events and places connected with these people. The author also displays the methods of work enabling students to apply the skills of writing diverse forms of biographies. The material was illustrated with the fragments of sketches drawn by students and photographs taken during the realization of the project.

The aim of this article is to explore whether-from the subjective perspective of people born before the end of WWII-systemic transformation brought about significant changes in their individual lives, and if yes-what was the meaning of those changes for them. In particular, I examine how experiences related to the events that preceded systemic transformation in Poland or took place during its most intensive stage are reflected in contemporary biographical narratives of 49 persons aged 72 or more, for whom the period of professional activity, in whole or in major part, occurred in the times of the Polish People’s Republic. I perform the analysis in three steps. First, I investigate the place of systemic transformation in the narratives, and consider the reasons why it is relatively often absent or poorly reflected there. Second, I present thematic motifs prevailing in those interviews where references to the systemic change appear. In the third step, I investigate the meaning of experiences connected with transformation for the narrators, the accompanying emotions-some of them still persisting-and ways in which the narrators incorporated those experiences into their biographies. The underlying narratives come from people who were drawn for a nationwide quantitative panel survey many years ago, in 1987, and participated in it for the next 25-30 years.

This article concernes Third Culture Kids (TCKs), i.e. persons, who due their parents’ work spent a significant period of their childhood or school years in a different country than that of their parents. Due to the fact that in today’s globalizing world more and more people experience working abroad and many of them are accompanied by their families, the issue of the consequences of such a mobile and multicultural childhood becomes extremely important. The author has conducted 53 biographical interviews with adult Third Culture Kids. The biographical consequences of moving in one’s childhood are analyzed in a few spheres: professional life, social relations, psychological problems, and identity construction. TCKs are most often from the families of diplomats, professionals working abroad on contracts, employees of international firms. The vast majority of them has tertiary education and chooses a career which gives independence, the possibility to travel and capitalize cultural competences, which one has acquired thanks to his or her upbringing. Unfortunately, such a lifestyle since childhood is associated with the risk of psychological (ranging from the lack of embeddedness to depression) and social (e.g. sense of alienation, difficulties in engaging in deeper relations) problems. Building a coherent and long-lasting identity is also a challenge for Third Culture Kids. The author describes means of dealing with the above-mentioned problems.

The article contains deliberations on the subject of adult learning as a result of breaking points in people’s lives. It is based on Fritz Schütze and Gerhard Riemann’s concept of the trajectory, trying to show the educational potential of critical life events. The paper constitutes an illustration about learning and biography. The analysis concerns an individual who experienced domestic violence, was separated from her family of origin by being placed in a care and educational institution, whose life was additionally complicated by teenage pregnancy and motherhood. The analysis of the narrative makes it possible to see two dimensions of the relationship between learning and biography – learning from the experiences we face during life and biographical learning (or learning from a biography).

The article presents the conceptual framework of descriptive biographical studies on childhood among 114 prominent Poles. It discusses the methodological dilemmas related to the use of biography in the reconstruction of the past, and characterizes the applied research procedure as well as the categories for describing childhood, the Polish historical context, and the environment of the outstanding youth.
W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję badań biograficznych nad dzieciństwem 114 wybitnych Polaków. Przedstawiono dylematy metodologiczne związane z wykorzystaniem biografii w rekonstrukcji przeszłości oraz scharakteryzowano własną procedurę badawczą i kategorie opisu dzieciństwa, polskiego kontekstu historycznego i środowiska, w którym przebiegała młodość Wybitnych.

The paper presents the results of the analysis of 25 biographical narrative interviews conducted between 2020–2021 with people from working-class backgrounds who, in the process of becoming academic workers, experienced the costs of cultural mobility. International literature suggests that upward mobility is not only a source of satisfaction or prestige but also suffering for academics from the unprivileged classes. Therefore, in our paper, we aim to answer two research questions: (1) what adaptation strategies do academics from the working-class use to deal with difficult experiences?, and (2) what resources do they mobilize at different stages of life (childhood, school years, the beginning of a research career) to implement these strategies? The analysis of empirical material allowed us to distinguish a number of practices that, in the long term, enabled the interviewees to develop an academic career, e.g., collaboration with “significant others” (of higher social positions), hiding deficits of a capital, context-dependent manifestation of various sets of cultural practices, or the rebellion against the rules and norms present in the family or academic environment. Based on these practices, we define six categories of adaptation strategies: “hacking the system”, “hyper-productivity”, “borrowing capital”, “class manoeuvring”, “indirect career path”, and “resistance”.

Based on the analysis of 30 biographical narrative interviews with male and female residents of post-Soviet Belarus, the following four schematic narrative templates of Belarusian collective identity have been identified: the pro-Russian narrative, victimized negative identity, Belarusian nationalist scheme and pro-democratic narrative template. The focus of the article is on the interpretive frame of ‘collectivization of innocence’ as a foundation for the victimized negative ethnic identity and the pro-democratic narrative template underpinning a civil polity project. Excerpts of the interviews exhibiting the conflicting templates have been analyzed as illustrative examples.

Demitologizacyjna biografia Piątkowskiej odsłaniająca codzienność Prusa nie oddaje bohaterowi sprawiedliwości, lecz usiłuje nawiązać więź z czytelnikiem poprzez dostarczenie plotki i ekscesu.
Article presents critical analysis of Bolesław Prus’s biography Prus. Śledztwo biograficzne (biographical investigation) by Monika Piątkowska. Author of the article discuss asumptions of Piątkowska’s biographical method based on arbitrary recognition that fictional works by Prus are undisputable, absolutely reliable source of knowledge about his life as well as disclose biographer’s attitude on what real literature is supposed to be (expressivistic theory of literary work). Demitologising biography by Piątkowska does not do justice to its subject, but attempt to meet readers desire for gossip and excess.

It is a deep-seated belief that marriage plays an important role in contributing to happiness or success in life which is in this essay understood as the coexistence within the institutions of marriage and family. In an attempt to find a “recipe for marital happiness,” there have been expressed popular views that a successful life, a good husband or wife, just like in the lottery, depend on good luck and happy coincidence, and are independent of the knowledge and the will of the persons concerned. The concept of happiness encompasses subjective feelings, aspirations, expectations and experiences of an individual. To develop one’s own definition of happiness, one has to look more deeply into oneself. This idea became my main motivation to conduct research using biographical methods. This paper presents an analysis of the collected research material.

Aim. In order to provide psychological counselling, it is necessary to properly diagnose and study the psycho-emotional states, psychological makers of parents raising children with special educational needs (SEN). Methods. In the diagnostic and practical work with parents of children with SEN, we used the text analysis method and the biographical method (including projective techniques lifeline, my autobiography), which combine diagnostic and psychotherapeutic scientific results. Family sociogram technique (Eidemiller, 2002) and its modified version (Tkachova, 2014) are used to study interpersonal family relationships and the nature of communication. The article analyses the scientific data and approaches to the study of problems faced by parents, arising from the condition of their child; emotional states of parents raising a child with SEN; stage of experience of the birth of their child. Results. Intervention is focused on the present and future. If the experience of the past comes up, it is used for the benefit of achieving certain goals. An important result of the study to be worked on is that parents of special children mention only their family and children, but forget about their own wellbeing. Children with SEN are surrounded by care and love, parents seek symbiotic relationships with children trying to satisfy all their needs, protect from difficulties, offer boundless love and sometimes over-protection. Conclusion. Knowledge of psychological stages identified within the theory of grief helps professionals understand when and how it is better to intervene in the situation taking into account the characteristics of a particular family and individual reactions.

Polscy badacze średniowiecza wykazują w ostatnich latach dużą aktywność na polu pisania monografii biograficznych polskich biskupów żyjących w wiekach średnich. Analizując cechy, jakie wykazują tego typu rozprawy naukowe powstałe w ostatnim 25-leciu oraz sposób ich konstrukcji, można wskazać trzy modele pisania, jakie reprezentują, lub wokół jakich oscylują. Artykuł zbiera w jednym miejscu obserwacje i wnioski wyciągnięte na podstawie analizy kompozycji sześciu wybranych monografii biograficznych poświęconych polskim biskupom średniowiecznym, dzięki czemu można prześledzić, jak na przestrzeni ostatnich lat kształtowały się tendencje w pisaniu tego typu rozpraw. Widać tu wyraźnie przechodzenie od modelu chronologicznego, poprzez dedukcyjny, aż po najbardziej popularny w ostatnich latach model problemowy. Do rozważań na temat ewoluującego modelu monografii biograficznej średniowiecznego polskiego biskupa zostały włączone uwagi recenzentów wybranych sześciu publikacji, co pozwoliło na głębszą refleksję nad tym, w jaki sposób pisać o biskupach średniowiecznych.
Polish researchers of the Middle Ages have in recent years demonstrated a considerable activity in the field of writing biographical monographs of Polish medieval bishops. By analyzing the features and construction of such treatises from the last 25 years, one can recognize three models of writing they represent. The article comprises observations and conclusions drawn on the basis of the composition of six chosen biographical monographs devoted to Polish medieval bishops, thanks to which the tendencies in writing such works in the recent years may be followed through. An evident change from chronological, through deductive to the most popular problematic model can be noticed. The presentation of the evolution of the model of biographical monograph of medieval Polish bishops has been supplemented with reviews of six chosen publications, which allows for a deeper reflection on the topic of how to write about medieval bishops.

The paper presents the main assumptions of the narrative learning theory developed by M. Carolyn Clark and Marsha Rossiter. The theory is based on the idea that people understand themselves as well as the changes over the course of their lives narratively. Narratives are a uniquely human way of giving meaning to life experience. According to the authors, narrative learning is a twofold concept: 1) learning through stories (listening to stories, telling stories, recognizing stories), 2) conceptualizing learning as a narrative process.
W tekście przedstawiono zarys teorii narracyjnego uczenia się opracowanej przez M. Carolyn Clark i Marshę Rossiter. Teoria oparta jest na założeniu, że ludzie rozumieją nie tylko siebie, ale także zmiany zachodzące w biegu ich życia w sposób narracyjny. Narracje są unikalnym sposobem nadawania znaczenia doświadczeniom życiowym. W ujęciu autorek narracyjne uczenie się stanowi ramę do rozważań w dwojakim sensie: 1) uczenie się poprzez historie (tj. słuchanie historii, opowiadanie historii i rozpoznawanie historii), 2) konceptualizacja uczenia się jako procesu narracyjnego.

The aim of the text entitled `Diversity in academic culture. Seeking of outsider`s identity` is the an analysis of a problem: how does freedom as a main virtue of academic society influence on functioning in social roles of its participants? How does it contribute to developing of self-consciousness of subjects in university life? Who in fact are outsiders apart from being people on the edges of academic community?-they are only some introducing questions. Main theoretical approaches applied in the text are following: Talcott Parson`s concept of a university, interactive dimension of social roles, ambivalence in scholars roles, mobbing as a kind of social interaction, human as an author of her/his biography in the reflection of Ulrich Beck. In the second part of the text author presents main biographical orientations of outsiders as well as some trajectories describing a process of constructing outsiders` identity. In the conclusion there is also an attempt to describe who in fact outsider is and what are the main indicators of this attitude and auto-identifi cation.
Celem powyższego artykułu jest poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na pytanie o tożsamość outsiderów w środowisku akademickim w oparciu o kwestie dotyczące roli wolności funkcjonowaniu w roli i w rozwijaniu podmiotowości uczestników akademickiej sceny. Do analizy powyższych zagadnień wykorzystane zostaną następujące podejścia teoretyczne: koncepcja uniwersytetu jako wspólnoty akademickiej w ujęciu Talcotta Parsonsa, funkcjonalistyczne i interakcyjne ujęcia roli społecznej w socjologii, ambiwalencja jako cecha roli, mobbing jako interakcja społeczna oraz autorefleksywność jako cecha biografii i w ujęciu Ulricha Becka. W drugiej części tekstu zaprezentuję pewne orientacje biograficzne outsiderów jak i trajektorie prowadzące do ich budowania, a zarazem będące podstawą konstruowania tożsamości outsiderów.

The paper is devoted to Zinaida Gippius’s literary portraits left on the pages of ego-documents, especially memoirs. She was one of the most significant figures of the Russian Silver Age. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, the writer created her own legend and image based on internal conflict, which in turn influenced the diversity of her portraits in memoirs. Their analysis leads to the conclusion that these portraits fit into the stereotyped, ambivalent perception of a woman, and majority of the authors reveal the tendency to mythologize and dehumanize her heroine: on the one hand her divinization, and on the other – reification. It also proves that the memoirist had perpetuated and widened the legend about her.

Knihu biografických esejů polského novináře Mariusze Surosze "Pepíci". Dramatické století Čechů polskýma očima, která je věnována osudům a občas i tragickým životním volbám 17. významných osobností z dějin Československa a bojuje s polskými stereotypy Čecha, vydalo v překladu Pavla Weigla pražské nakladatelství Plus (2011). Čeští recenzenti ji staví vedle Szczygłovy knihy "Gottland" a hodnotí většinou pozitivně. Kritičtěji reagují obyčejní čtenáři. Článek hledá motivy, které vedly překladatele k balancování mezi strategiemi „exotizace” a „naturizace” textu a zdůrazňuje výsledky této volby. Bere v úvahu i ediční úroveň české publikace Surosze.
Mariusz Surosz’s biographical essays entitled: "Pepiki". Dramatic century of Czechs — which portrays life and fate of several notable Czech personalities from XXth century, while trying to revise Polish stereotypes about Czechs — was translated by Pavel Weigl and published in 2011 by PLUS publishing house. Czech reviewers compared it to "Gottland" by Mariusz Szczygieł and accepted it well, though the average readers reacted more critically. The article identify causes which determined the translator’s choise to balance between „foreignization” and „domestication” of the text. It also points out consequences of that choice and finally notes the editorial level of Surosz’s Czech book.

Celem podjętych badań jest analiza strategii narracyjnych, zastosowanych przez twórców filmowych w trzech dokumentach biograficznych, poświęconych polskiej noblistce – Wisławie Szymborskiej. Przeanalizowano sposoby profilowania obrazu poetki z ich następującymi komponentami: podmiotem (podmiotami) prowadzonej narracji, analizą niesionych przez nią treści oraz zastosowanymi technikami ekspozycji wątków biograficznych. Na warsztacie badawczym znalazły się następujące filmy: Radość pisania (reż. Antoni Krauze, 2005), Chwilami życie bywa znośne. Przewrotny portret Wisławy Szymborskiej (reż. Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska, 2009), Napisane życie. Wisława Szymborska (reż. Marta Węgiel, 2015). Analiza wykazała, że dokumenty biograficzne pełnią typową dla nich rolę poznawczo-edukacyjną: zapoznają z twórczością literacką noblistki, informują w sposób nietuzinkowy o wybranych faktach z jej życia prywatnego. Zabiegi wykorzystywania i łączenia różnych mediów i kanałów (intermedialność, intermodalność, intertekstualność) czynią film biograficzny bardziej wiarygodnym pod względem informacyjnym i atrakcyjnym z estetycznego punktu widzenia.
The purpose of the present research is to analyze the narrative strategies used in three biographical documents dedicated to the Polish Nobel Prize winner Wislawa Szymborska. The ways of profiling the heroine’s image were analyzed with their following components: the subject(s) of the narrative, the analysis of its content and the techniques used to expose biographical themes. The following films were analyzed: Radość pisania (dir. Antoni Krauze, 2005), Chwilami życie bywa znośne. Przewrotny portret Wisławy Szymborskiej (dir. Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska, 2009), Napisane życie. Wisława Szymborska (dir. Marta Węgiel, 2015). The analysis showed that biographical documentaries play a typical cognitive-educational role: they familiarize us with the literary works of the Nobel Prize winner, inform us in an unconventional way about selected facts from her private life. The procedures of using and combining various media (intermediality, intermodality, intertextuality) make the biographical document more credible and attractive from an aesthetic point of view.

Opis:
In social sciences and humanities, a variety of approaches to biographical research are used. The question then arises what is appropriate and what is not? Which approach is worth using and why? This article looks at biographical research from the critical point of view, especially at a time when the diversity of approaches, concepts, and perspectives can make it difficult for novices to use this method. Having long experience in applying the biographical method allows me to look critically at my own research and think about using the abductive method to generate a theory on identity formation and transformation by non-traditional students in higher education in Sweden. How is this possible and what are the consequences? This article tries to show the beginnings of the biographical method in the context of social sciences and reflects on the different approaches, pitfalls as well as advantages and disadvantages. It presents problems in applying biographical interview, sampling, ethical issues, data analysis and conceptualization as well as creation of typology on the example of my own research.
W naukach społecznych i humanistycznych widzimy różnorodność podejść do badań biograficznych. Powstaje więc pytanie, które z tych podejść są właściwe, a które nie? Które warto stosować i dlaczego? Artykuł ten podejmuje zagadnienie badań biograficznych z punktu widzenia krytycznego, szczególnie w czasie, kiedy różnorodność podejść, koncepcji i perspektyw może sprawiać trudności nowicjuszom w stosowaniu tej metody. Wieloletnie posługiwanie się metodą biograficzną pozwala mi spojrzeć na własną działalność badawczą krytycznie i zastanawiać się, jak stosowanie metody abdukcyjnej do generowania teorii dotyczącej konstruowania i rekonstruowania tożsamości nietradycyjnych studentów w szkolnictwie wyższym w Szwecji jest możliwe i jakie są tego konsekwencje. Artykuł ten stara się pokazać początki metody biograficznej, usytuować ją w kontekście nauk społecznych, zastanowić się nad różnymi podejściami, pułapkami oraz zaletami i wadami tej metody. Równocześnie przedstawia problemy w stosowaniu metody wywiadu biograficznego, doboru próby, zagadnień etycznych oraz analizy danych, jak i konceptualizacji danych oraz tworzenia typologii na przykładzie własnych badań.

Artykuł prezentuje sylwetkę naukową prof. Hanny Tadeusiewicz – historyka prasy, wybitnego znawcy periodyków drukarskich XIX wieku oraz bibliologa-bibliografa związanego z Uniwersytetem Łódzkim. Prezentacja osiągnięć naukowych H. Tadeusiewicz obejmuje prace prasoznawcze, literaturoznawcze i biograficzne wydane w latach 1966–2020. Materiał zebrany został w oparciu o istniejącą bibliografię przedmiotowo-podmiotową i prezentuje wyniki analizy biograficznej i prasoznawczej. Na dorobek badawczy H. Tadeusiewicz składa się 180 prac monograficznych i przyczynkarskich, z czego ponad 40 to opracowania z zakresu historii prasy i drukarstwa, w tym dotyczące „Przeglądu Drukarskiego” „Budzika”, „Pracy”, „Czcionki”, „Grafiki” oraz „Poradnika Graficznego”. Niniejsza publikacja stanowi podsumowanie dokonań naukowych H. Tadeusiewicz w obszarze prasoznawstwa i prezentuje wkład autorki w badania polskiej prasy.
The article presents prof. Hanna Tadeusiewicz’s scientific profile – a press historian, an eminent expert on the 19th-century printing periodicals, and a bibliologist-bibliographer associated with the University of Lodz. The presentation of H. Tadeusiewicz’s scientific achievements comprises works on press studies, literature studies, and biographical studies published between the years 1966–2020. The material was collected based on the existing subject-object bibliography and presents the results of biographical and press analyses. H. Tadeusiewicz’s academic achievements include 180 monographs and contributory works, of which over 40 deal with the history of press and printing (also concerning “Przegląd Drukarski”, “Budzik”, “Praca”, “Czcionka”, “Grafika”, and “Poradnik Graficzny”). This publication summarises the scientific achievements of H. Tadeusiewicz in the field of press studies and presents the author’s contribution to the Polish press studies.

The article addresses the polemic between two Polish writers Jerzy Andrzejewski and Jerzy Zawieyski, whose outlook was significantly affected by the war experience. When in 1945 Andrzejewski was influenced by Marxist ideology, Zawieyski turned to religion and gained recognition as a Catholic writer. The author of the article asserts that Andrzejewski’s Propozycje teraźniejszości (published after 1945) and Zawieyski’s Kantata anielska (1948) represent a literary polemic determined by its biographical and socio-political contexts.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie sensu badań biograficznych w kontekście dyskusji o biografii zbiorowej ukazującej dzieje andragogiki. Na tle uwag dotyczących metodologii badań biograficznych omówiona została typologia biografii i przykłady biografii zbiorowych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem nauk o wychowaniu. W końcowej części tekstu zaprezentowane zostały propozycje osób związanych z andragogiką, które powinny zostać upamiętnione w słowniku andragogów polskich
The purpose of this article is to explore the meaning of biographical research in the context of discussions of collective biography to do with the history of andragogy. The typology of biography and the examples of the collective biographies – with particular emphasis on the science of education – is discussed, based observations concerning the methodology of biographical research on general. In the final part of the text the proposals of people strictly associated with andragogy are presented, as they should be recorded in the dictionary Polish angragogues.
