Opis:
This study aims to examine the communicative Arabic teaching methods currently used in Korean universities that extend beyond MSA to promote learner understanding and awareness of colloquial Arabic dialects. Arabic is characterized by a diglossic linguistic situation, which means that it consists of both diverse colloquial dialects used in different regions and social classes, and the written standard of Modern Standard Arabic. Recent trends in the field of language education have been moving toward a communicative approach to instruction. Since both MSA and spoken Arabic are important language variants that cannot be ignored, university curricula should integrate both variants into language courses. In the spoken Arabic education awareness survey conducted in the present study, the majority of the respondents answered that they wanted to increase the number of spoken Arabic classes offered at their university. Concerning colloquial Arabic, the majority also answered that they preferred the Egyptian dialect, followed by the Gulf and Levantine dialects. In terms of the timing of colloquial Arabic instruction, most respondents answered that they thought it should start in third year or in second year at university. It is also important to develop textbooks and other teaching and learning materials to aid the efficient instruction of spoken Arabic, which will give students the communicative skills necessary to be effective and competent communicators regardless of where they travel, study, or work in the Arab world.

The large number of words from Arabic found in modern Spanish is proof of the deep influence Arabic has had on the Spanish language. Historical sociolinguistic processes which have lasted to the present day indicate that the influence of Arabic culture has been neither brief or superficial. Instead, it has, and continues to have great significance for the language situation of Spain. Much linguistic research has shown how loans from Arabic have been assimilated as they have become part of the lexical resources of modern Spanish. Arabic culture and civilization in the Iberian Peninsula (711-1942) above all involved the sciences, literature, art, architecture, engineering, agriculture, the military, medicine. At that time, Al-Andalus was one of the most influential European centers of science and cultural exchange in Europe. Contacts between Arabic and the Romance languages found in the Iberian Peninsula resulted in numerous loans both from Arabic to the Romance languages and from the Romance languages to Arabic. These topics have been the subject of extensive research conducted from historical, cultural and linguistic points of view. Despite the existence of numerous works concerning Arabic loans, this area requires, further, deeper research. In this article, selected issues concerning Arabic loans in Spanish are analyzed as are the adaptive processes they have undergone and the level of their integration into Spanish. The basis of the analysis is made up of oral and written texts collected in the Corpus de Español del Siglo XXI [CORPES XXI, RAE] – a corpus of contemporary Spanish from the 21st century.

When it comes to Basran and Kufan grammarians, there is no dearth of studies, but nevertheless we are mostly left with rather general statements concerning the nature of both schools of Arab grammatical thought. In this article, after a short summary of the current state of research, an extract from a 12th century compilation of disputes between Basran and Kufan grammarians - Al-Insaf f i masa"il al-hilaf bayna al-basriyyin wa-al-kufiyyin by Ibn al-Anbari - is put under examination. The discussed extract is a chapter dedicated to the disagreement on the etymology of the word ism and it gives us a worthwhile overview on various aspects of medieval Arabic grammatical thought, and helps us understand the nature of the conflict between the two competing schools.

Natural Language Inference (NLI) is a hot topic research in natural language processing, contradiction detection between sentences is a special case of NLI. This is considered a difficult NLP task which has a significant influence when added as a component in many NLP applications (such as question answering systems and text summarization). The Arabic language is one of the most challenging low-resources languages for detecting contradictions due to its rich lexical semantics ambiguity. We have created a data set of more than 12k sentences and named it ArNLI; it will be publicly available. Moreover, we have applied a new model that was inspired by Stanford's proposed contradiction-detection solutions for the English language. We proposed an approach for detecting contradictions between pairs of sentences in the Arabic language using a contradiction vector combined with a language model vector as an input to a machine-learning model. We analyzed the results of different traditional machine-learning classifiers and compared their results on our created data set (ArNLI) and on the automatic translation of both the PHEME and SICK English data sets. The best results were achieved by using the random forest classifier, with accuracies of 0.99, 0.60 and 0.75 on PHEME, SICK, and ArNLI respectively.

Brought up for discussion are problems of general and particular mor(pho)phonology. First, some linguistic terms are clarified, and the status of morphophonology as a linguistic subdiscipline is considered. The particular morphophonological part, referring to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Tunisian Arabic (TA), is topic oriented and it treats in succession: the structure of the verb forms, the relation of homoradicality (homolexicality) specifying the corresponding paradigmatization, and the intra- and interparadigmatic relations. In terms of the former of these relations the concept of morphoneme is defined, and among the latter morphophonological convergence and analogy as well as thematogen homoaffixality are distinguished. Finally, the dynamics of morphophonological space, morphonemic and morphonic representations are touched upon.

Opis:
The Arabic language was lauded in Poland as early as 1844 by M.D. Theodore Tripplin (1812?–1881) in his book entitled Wspomnienia z podróży (Memoirs of Journeys). Tripplin was a Polish physician and writer who visited many oriental countries during his numerous journeys. He learnt Classical Arabic and Maghrebi Arabic in Morocco (1843). Later he travelled to and lived in Turkey (1859), Palestine (1859, 1873–1875), Egypt (1859) and Algeria (1843, 1859). In his praise of the Arabic language, Tripplin explains that it is ‘a beautiful and comprehensible language’ (Pol. piękny, zrozumiały język) and he believes that everybody should learn Arabic, as it is not possible to appreciate the Arabs and their culture without the knowledge of their mother tongue.

The term glocal has been used to describe phenomena that simultaneously blend both global and local elements (see Featherstone, Lash, & Robertson, 1995, p. 101). Nowhere is this more evident than in the existence of 3arabizi, itself a blended language composed of English and Vernacular Arabic, written in Latin letters but using arithmographemes, that is, numerals as letters to represent hard-to-transliterate sounds because they do not exist in English (see Bianchi, 2012).1 As part of a doctoral study investigating online language choice involving Arabic and English, this paper examines the unique stylistic and topical functions of 3 arabizi when compared with its linguistic forbears, that is, Arabic and English in a multilingual web forum. The findings indicate that 3arabizi is used for more informal, intimate and phatic communication than either Arabic or English, though these latter two languages or codes are not entirely formal in form and purpose either.

Reformatory ideas of Rifā‘a at-Tahtāwī inscribed into an interesting discussion which has been going on in the Arabic and Muslim world since the beginning of the 19th century. The discussion centred around very important matters concerning the political system: social and political reforms, comparison of the representative system and democracy with their antithesis, despotism. The debate searched for the ways out of stagnation and backwardness, which essentially included the reform of the educational system – an idea emphasised by all thinkers. Rifā‘a at-Tahtāwī’s objective was to find the answer to the basic question vexing the representatives of the Muslim world: the question about the causes of its fall and backwardness and the basis of European supremacy, considering the role of oppressive governments, anachronistic state structures, lack of modern school system, among others. The polemic crystallizes but most of all – crystallisation of the ideas and notions concerning the relationship between tradition and modernity.

The presence of Arabic loans in Swahili has not become subject of reliable corpus-based analyses so far. The in-fluence of Arabic language on Swahili can be investigated in literary sources, but reference to whether writers are Muslims or not is essential for their differentiation. This article intends to investigate the presence of Arabic in contemporary prose texts written by Tanzanian authors from Zanzibar and from mainland. The electronic corpus has two sets, Tanzanian cor-pus and Zanzibarian corpus respectively which are almost equal in size. The reference list of Arabic loans has been ex-tracted from two published sources. Using Concordance, a concordance software for text analysis, the frequency of words representing grammatical classes is tested. Differences in the two corpora have been indicated, as well as some shared occurrences of items of Arabic origin (mostly adverbs and conjunctions).

Despite growing interest in the impact of computer-mediated communication on our lives, linguistic studies on such communication conducted in the Arabic language are scarce. Grounded in Relevance Theory, this paper seeks to fill this void by analysing the linguistic structure of Arabic religious posts on Facebook. First, I discuss communication on Facebook, treating it as a relevance-seeking process of writing or sharing posts, with the functions of ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ seen as cues for communicating propositional attitude. Second, I analyse a corpus of around 80 posts, revealing an interesting use of imperatives, interrogatives and conditionals which manipulate the interpretation of such posts between descriptive and interpretive readings. I also argue that a rigorous system of incentives is employed in such posts in order to boost their relevance. Positive, negative and challenging incentives link the textual to the visual message in an attempt to raise more cognitive effects for the readers.

The Arabic lexicon is built on consonantal roots. Unlike agglutinative languages, it uses internal flexion. However, a significant part of modern Arabic scientific terminology is borrowed from Western languages, especially French and English. Extensive borrowing of this kind risks the emergence of two distinct subsets within the Arabic lexicon: a. the general vocabulary includes the words used by everyone in everyday life. This vocabulary is built on consonant roots, mainly with three consonants. Unlike French and English dictionaries, Arabic dictionaries are organized by roots and not by entries in alphabetical order. ; b. the specialized vocabulary includes the terms of scientific and technical disciplines used by specialists in their fields. This vocabulary is built on syllables like the vocabulary of European languages. This text will examine the problems of extensive register-specific lexical borrowing, and the risk of fracture that this presents.

This study elicited Arabic students’ perceptions regarding their language-learning strategy preferences (LLSPs). A sample of 120 undergraduate Arabic students participated. Data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews. The findings reveal that students tend to adopt a holistic view of the learning task and relate it to real-life, personal experience. Participants selected interaction with the teacher, speaking, and flashcards as their most preferred application-directed learning strategies. These selections demonstrate that Arabic students desire to be proactive in order to make the language more concrete for them, to enhance their performance, and to develop language skills that will last a lifetime. Whereas advanced level participants preferred interaction with the teacher, speaking, flashcards, and working individually, beginner level participants preferred learning grammar and group work. The empirical evidence from this study could have implications regarding theoretical models of effective Arabic language instruction, Arabic teacher education programs, and curriculum development.

Opis:
The present study examines Arabic legal phraseology formation from the standpoint of positive law and jurisprudence. It claims that phraseological constructions in Arabic legislative and statutory texts are largely influenced by the translation process of Roman law texts. However, scholarly literature still relies to some extent on formulae used in the Islamic jurisprudence. To illustrate this, three examples of legal principles anchored in Islamic jurisprundence, known as legal maxims, are discussed along with their corresponding expressions in positive law in modern-day Arabic. Ultimately, the purpose of this paper is twofold: firstly, to demonstrate that the phraseology present in many Arabic positive laws stems from a historical translation process that started in the beginning of the 20th century; secondly to emphasize the significance of textual genre awareness in legal translation. Concretely, the introductory section provides an overview of recent studies that have addressed legal phraseologisms. It is followed by a section on the historical role of translation in the construction of certain phraseologisms. The general legal principles of (a) burden of proof, (b) presumption of innocence, and (c) the pacta sunt servanda principle are then examined in order to shed light on the influence of both the Civilist tradition and Islamic jurisprudence on the use of legal Arabic today, as well as to demonstrate how the translation of phraseologisms is dependent on the parameters of genre. The analysis leads to the conclusion that proper use of phraseologisms, whether in drafting or translation, is closely linked to knowledge of phraseology formation and the historical influence of translation.

Orthographic-To-Phonetic (O2P) Transcription is the process of learning the relationship between the written word and its phonetic transcription. It is a necessary part of Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems and it plays an important role in handling Out-Of-Vocabulary (OOV) words in Automatic Speech Recognition systems. The O2P is a complex task, because for many languages, the correspondence between the orthography and its phonetic transcription is not completely consistent. Over time, the techniques used to tackle this problem have evolved, from earlier rules based systems to the current more sophisticated machine learning approaches. In this paper, we propose an approach for Arabic O2P Conversion based on a probabilistic method: Conditional Random Fields (CRF). We discuss the results and experiments of this method apply on a pronunciation dictionary of the Most Commonly used Arabic Words, a database that we called (MCAW-Dic). MCAW-Dic contains over 35 000 words in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and their pronunciation, a database that we have developed by ourselves assisted by phoneticians and linguists from the University of Tlemcen. The results achieved are very satisfactory and point the way towards future innovations. Indeed, in all our tests, the score was between 11 and 15% error rate on the transcription of phonemes (Phoneme Error Rate). We could improve this result by including a large context, but in this case, we encountered memory limitations and calculation difficulties.

For the articulatory analysis, a range of kinematics parameters were analyzed from the phoneme productions including movement trajectories, distance, velocity, and duration of tongue movements. Among the most important results, we note a longer duration of the vowel following a geminate consonant, a decreasing in levels of F1 and F2 formants and a rising in level of F3 formant of this vowel.

The Arabic world is proud of its past and grandeur of former times dating to the pre-islam period and the era of the rise of Islam. The article is an attempt to describe the theme of glory in the Arab literature of the renaissance concerning this region from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. During this time a new Arabic literature developed and it included the so-called poetry of traditional current and drama as an innovatory literary form called neoclassicism, which had not previously existed. Both genres referred to the brilliant past of Arabia and the Muslim civilization, encouraging Arabs to embrace its revival. These genres were basing on the motif of majd – ‘glory’, ‘praise’, ‘fame’. The poetry included, first of all, panegyrics and poems expressing a longing for previous glory while neoclassic dramatists presented the same theme with examples of ancient communities, tribal legends and the history of the Arabic-Muslim Caliphate. The article aims to show the literary pictures of Arabic grandeur and glory outlined by the renaissance writers. With reference to the changes in literature, the paper argues that since the 1950s, poetry and drama writers have rejected the concept of a glorious past and criticized the dreadful and inglorious moments in the history of Arab regions.

Units of an Arabic text can be Romanised and Polonised in various ways. Due to the peculiarities of Arabic, neither transliteration, consisting in preserving letter-to-letter correspondence, nor transcription, understood as representing pronunciation, fulfil practical needs in the case of this language. In what is called ‘Polish simplified transcription’, a system used in Arabic studies in Poland, three components can be distinguished: transcriptional, transliterational, and a third one termed here ‘uniformizational’ (the use of conventionally established forms of words). The norms of Polish simplified transcription delineated in this paper are analysed with respect to the priniciples of Polish spelling and Polish phonetics.

This research aims to study the application of using films in teaching the Arabic language to Korean students. Recently, level based classes and developing communication skills are becoming important goals in foriegn language education. The most effective way to develop the student’s communication skills is to expose them to real life situations and related resources. Films are replicas of real life situations and thus are effective especially in teaching spoken language. This research implies the following things to Arabic education. First, it is best to provide realistic data to students to improve their communication skills. Selecting films that contain conversations and expressions that are used every day, while avoiding violence or contents of too much slang, will allow students to continuously remain interested and focused. Second, a program that connects films to CD-ROM for textbooks needs to be created. Additionally, there is a need to increase the understanding of spoken language through various study programs for Korean teachers. Finally, using interesting films to motivate students will have positive effects and will allow them to approach Arabic through understanding of the language rather than pure memorization.

The present article suggests a hypothetical localization and provides a reconstructed text of a Coptic inscription which was seen by Urbain Bouriant on the road along the east bank of the Nile, halfway between Assuan and Kom Ombo. Bouriant edited this inscription twice in the 1890s, presenting it, together with an Arabic inscription that lay underneath, as a bilingual report on roadwork, and dated it to year 409 of Diocletian, resp. 7[3] Higˇri, i.e., AD 693. This article argues that, on the contrary, the two inscriptions are of different and much later date, and commemorate two distinct (albeit similar) events.

However, the textual relations between the two works have not attracted much attention in modern scholarship, despite the intriguing presence in both texts of seemingly similar descriptions. The aim of the present article is to investigate the nature of the link connecting the two accounts through a close comparison of the four passages that appear to be textually related.

The effect of Gum Arabic (GA) on the corrosion of an N80 carbon steel pipeline in a CO2 -saturated chloride (0.5M KCl) solution was investigated through AC impedance and polarization curves. Potentiodynamic measurements showed that the corrosion current density decreased in the presence of inhibitors and that the inhibitor acts like a mixed-type inhibitor, with anodic predominance. The Nyquist diagrams showed an increase in polarization resistance values in the presence of the inhibitor, thus increasing inhibition efficiency. At higher temperatures, the inhibition efficiency decreased, implying that the inhibition action of GA occurred via the physical adsorption process. The activation parameters of the corrosion process such as activation energies, Ea, and the heat of adsorption, Qads, were calculated, respectively, by the obtained corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency at different temperatures. At higher temperatures, the increase in activation energy combined with the negative levels of the heat of adsorption further supported the physical adsorption nature of the process.

This research scrutinizes the observation that when the thematic subject is extracted (i.e. questioned) in Jordanian Arabic, temporal/locative inversion may occur. Temporal inversion occurs irrespective of the verb being transitive or intransitive, whereas locative inversion is limited to contexts with an unaccusative verb. This research argues that this distinction correlates with the base-generation of temporal/locative adjuncts; temporal adjuncts are base-generated adjoining to TP, whereas locatives are base-generated adjoining to VP. Temporal but not locative adjuncts resist fronting with vP, demand the use of a tense copula (or a tensed verb), and are not subject to deletion along with the lexical verb. With the assumption that Spec, SubjP must be filled with a non-silent copy due to the effects of the so-called Subject Criterion (Rizzi and Shlonsky 2007), a temporal or locative adjunct, if any, fills this position instead of the extracted thematic subject. Given its low position, a locative adjunct is accessible to Subj0 only when there is no v*P, hence the account of the correlation between locative inversion and the type of the verb. Furthermore, this research explores the existence of temporal/locative inversion in other two Arabic dialects (Najdi Arabic and Iraqi Arabic), arguing for a micro-parametric view of this strategy across Arabic dialects.

Opis:
Słowo „Allah” zazwyczaj utożsamiane jest z islamem. Jednakże ten termin był używany przez arabskich chrześcijan na długo przed powstaniem islamu. Język arabski jest używany na prawosławnych nabożeństwach od blisko 2000 tysięcy lat. Przeto wiele terminów rozwinęło się dawno temu. Wśród najbardziej podstawowych terminów są te nazywające Boga i opisujące Go.
The word “Allah” is associated usually with Islam. However, this term had been used among Arab Christians much earlier before the rise of Islam. Arabic language has been used in Orthodox service for almost 2000 years, so many terms have been developed long time ago. Among the most basic terms are the ones that call God and describe Him. They are used in the hymnography and prayers, sermons, articles and everyday life. However, in Polish literature those terms are still little known. Since Arabic belongs to the Semitic family of languages, its character is very different from Greek, Church Slavonic and Polish, and this affects a different point of view on some theological terms and also their variety. It also results in wealth of the terms related to God. The main reason of the differences in comparison with European languages is specific system of the Arabic language: the system of roots and themes. This is specified in the introductory part. The most basic terms related to God are presented and analyzed below. The terms are taken mainly from the liturgical texts, and some of them also from the Holy Scripture and sermons. Each term is also written in Church Slavonic to make it easier for the reader to understand it, since the Polish Orthodox terminology has not yet been established and unified. Each Arabic term is written in the original notation and ISO transcription used by Arabists in Poland.

Group sexual harassment in the Arab World, so called taḥarruš, has reached an extraordinary extent in recent years. The problem remains unsolved despite various state actions and social initiatives. The text argues that the failure of the initiatives and information campaigns results from the fact that those actions and initiatives locate the causes outside the cultural and religious system, while it is the social structure itself, maintained by the universal nomos of religion and culture, that generates sexual frustrations which are in turn being vented in a manner combining elements of teasing and aggression. The article has been divided into two parts-the first contains a presentation of the problem, the second offers its analysis and explanation.

The article deals with J.R. Skoyles’s theory of right hemisphere literacy which challenges the paradigm of left hemisphere dominance in the reading process and claims that in the early textual cultures the right hemisphere may have played a dominant role in reading. Applying this theory to Arab-Muslim culture, one would claim that in the early stages of the development of Arabic writing, reading may have been right-hemispheric in nature. The activity of the right hemisphere was related to the direction of writing leftwards. Moreover, Arabic script, whose reading is contextual due to the lack of short vowels, may have involved the right hemisphere to a relatively large extent in its processing and may have fostered the ‘preservation’ of its involvement even after the development of left hemisphere literacy. Finally, the presence of connections between letters in an Arabic word could also stimulate the participation of the right hemisphere in reading. At the same time, the development of left hemisphere literacy, now dominant among native Arab right-handed readers, did not necessarily have to be linked to a change in the direction of writing due to its high status in the culture linking it to the God and His word.

This paper aims to be sensitive to linguistic practices in describing different groups. In Algerian society, discrimination is exercised through these practices. Perhaps these practices used in fraught with cultural and political and religious assumptions and that what seems acceptable now may be offensive later. The main languages (Arabic, French, and Tamazight) are in violent confrontations. Tamazight as autochthone language was banned in public space for decades, till it becomes a public request. Arabic, closely linked with the Islamic religion, remains the official language. It is also regarded as a political language. French, as a colonial legacy, is considered as the language of social prestige. It remains used in different spaces. In this challenging coexistence, distinctions are legitimized, and inequalities are justified. The language becomes a symbol of discrimination and social segregation accordingly to the language. Other languages can interfere with the purpose to access to social promotion. The best way to understand and solve this problem is for different groups to learn as much as they can about one another, becoming more aware of the meaning and nuances naming and language and more conscious of the racial assumptions embedded in the language. Higher sensitivity to the language used in describing different group experiences is an essential step in promoting better intergroup relationships.

Opis:
We compared the use of verbal nouns in Modern Standard Arabic and Modern Hebrew. The main source of examples were two novels by Amos Oz (My Michael, A Tale of Love and Darkness) and their Arabic translations. In Modern Hebrew there are four types of verbal nouns, according to their grammatical features, syntactic functions and stylistic value: 1. deverbal noun ktiva ‘writing’, 2. gerund beħotvo ‘during his writing’, 3. infinitive liħtov ‘to write’ and 4. adverb katov ‘[while] writing’. In Modern Standard Arabic all verbal nouns display similar grammatical features and have similar syntactic functions. The Arabic verbal noun is an exact functional equivalent of the Hebrew deverbal noun ktiva. Other Hebrew verbal nouns are translated into Arabic as finite verbs or active participles, less frequently as verbal nouns. As far as the verbal noun is concerned, the most important difference between the two languages is the existence of the infinitive in Hebrew, a form that is lacking in Arabic. We also noticed that the Hebrew verbal nouns are stylistically diverse (contrary to the Arabic ones), what creates difficulty in achieving translational equivalence in terms of style.

Since 1948, Palestinian topics have been adopted by writers from different Arabic countries and have acted as a kind of political manifesto. By 1967 they were dominated by secularist views, primarily nationalist and socialist. The defeat of the Arab armies in the war with Israel in 1967 was followed by an ideological crisis that, in later years, resulted in the rise of fundamentalist sentiments. Religion marginalised the old socialist or pan-Arabic ideas and again became an important element of social discourse and the new Arab identity. The popularisation of the Islamic ideology changed the categorisation of the Palestinian conflict from secular into religious. The article examines – on the basis of the novel Umar yazharu fi al-Quds by Nagib al-Kilani – the role which literature played in the process of building a new historical consciousness through the dissemination of Muslim symbols, terms and arguments.

The paper deals with legal themes used by al-Hariri (1054-1122) in his Maqamas, which portray various social situations typical of the Arab world of the author’s time. This genre, characterized by ornate form and jocular contents, is a good tool of criticism of social phenomena like Islamic law or its language. Al-Hariri bases some of his Maqamas on the ambiguity of the language of law, by which he consciously shows that such ambiguity exists. He also presents some cases examined by judges, including a charge of plagiarism, which at that time was not considered a legal matter.

The article focuses on the Muslim dogma of the sacred nature of the Arabic language (and alphabet) as the language of the Quran – the Holy Book of Islam. The discussion is concerned with the consequences that the dogma had for the preservation of the unity of the Islamic world, particularly during the territorial expansion of the religion, and the development of scholarship and art, most importantly grammar and lexicology. The dogma, based on a number of verses from the Arabic original of the Book, forbids the use of translations of the Quran for religious purposes; a translation of the Book can only serve as the so-called Tefsir – an exposition given in a language other than Arabic of senses found in the Quran’s Arabic original. Arguments presented in the article are illustrated by examples from the literary tradition of Tatars – the Muslims of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Opis:
This work proposes a segmentation-free approach to Arabic Handwritten Text Recog-nition (AHTR): an attention-based Convolutional Neural Network - Recurrent Neural Network - Con-nectionist Temporal Classification (CNN-RNN-CTC) deep learning architecture. The model receives asinput an image and provides, through a CNN, a sequence of essential features, which are transferred toan Attention-based Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Network (BLSTM). The BLSTM gives features sequence in order, and the attention mechanism allows the selection of relevant information from the features sequences. The selected information is then fed to the CTC, enabling the loss calculation and the transcription prediction. The contribution lies in extending the CNN by dropout layers, batch normalization, and dropout regularization parameters to prevent over-fitting. The output of the RNN block is passed through an attention mechanism to utilize the most relevant parts of the input sequence in a flexible manner. This solution enhances previous methods by improving the CNN speed and performance and controlling over model over-fitting. The proposed system achieves the best accuracy of97.1% for the IFN-ENIT Arabic script database, which competes with the current state-of-the-art. It was also tested for the modern English handwriting of the IAM database, and the Character Error Rate of 2.9% is attained, which confirms the model’s script independence.

Opis:
The paper focuses on a historical novel, a genre that enjoys great popularity in Arabic literature. Based on historical material incorporated in literary fiction, the contemporary Arab writers try to deal with the most important subjects of ongoing intellectual discourse, such as colonialism, neocolonialism, and postcolonial identity. The analysed material is the novel The Granada Trilogy by Egyptian writer Raḍwà ‘Āšūr (Radwa Ashour), which in 1994, won the Best Book of the Year Award granted by the General Egyptian Book Organisation and the first prize at the first Arab Women’s Book Fair in 1995. It has been translated into many languages, including English and Spanish. The three-volume chronicle covers the period from 1491 to 1609, i.e., from the fall of Granada to the total expulsion of Muslims from Andalusia. The article aims to show that the author of The Granada Trilogy illustrates the gradual and deliberate elimination of Arab-Muslim culture in Spain as another act of the West-East confrontation, putting it in the colonial and neocolonial context of contemporary conflicts in the Arab World.

They have an interesting scientific history of development in Arabic too, starting from the Kufa-School of grammar until the modern theories. This paper discusses the interjections as a grammatical category in German and Arabic.

Ariel's Accessibility Scale
Opis:
One of the central aims in research on anaphora is to discover the factors that determine the choice of referential expressions in discourse. Ariel (1988; 2001) offers an Accessibility Scale where referential expressions, including demonstratives, are categorized according to the values of anaphoric (i.e. textual) distance that each of these has in relation to its antecedent. The aim of this paper is to test Ariel’s (1988; 1990; 2001) claim that the choice to use proximal or distal anaphors is mainly determined by anaphoric distance. This claim is investigated in relation to singular demonstratives in a corpus of Classical Arabic (CA) prose texts by using word count to measure anaphoric distance. Results indicate that anaphoric distance cannot be taken as a consistent or reliable determinant of how anaphors are used in CA, and so Ariel’s claim is not supported by the results of this study. This also indicates that the universality of anaphoric distance, as a criterion of accessibility, is defied.

The present paper concerns Arabic in certifi ed translators’ work. Thepaper contains a selection of examples translated from Arabic into Polish from a large domain of translation studies. I would like to underline that the present examples concern Polish language, with the English version not being a primary focus. Th is paper will deal with two important points (i) suitable words which express exact meanings and terms and (ii) the correctness of administrative style in some Arabic documents. Th e author will also examine the composition of Arabic texts and selection of information during the translation process.

Opis:
The current study is dedicated to measuring vowel temporal acoustics (duration, durational difference, and durational ratio) in the medial position of mostly CVCVCV polysyllabic words in Arabic and Japanese, avoiding the asymmetries in vowel position, syllable structure, and coda consonant quantity (singleton versus geminate) observed in previous experiments. Twenty-nine (16 Arabic and 13 Japanese) participants were asked to use a carrier sentence to produce 60 polysyllabic (mainly CVCVCV) items that contrasted in vowel quantity (short versus long) and vowel quality (/a/, /i/, and /u/) at a normal speech rate. The results show that while short and long vowels are durationally distinct within a language, Japanese vowels are clearly longer than Arabic vowels, although the durational difference remains approximately the same between the two languages. The durational ratio of short-to-long vowel presents a new pattern that contrasts with that reported in earlier research. Specifically, Japanese long vowels in the medial position of polysyllabic words are twice as long as their short counterparts, while Arabic long vowels are more than twice as long. This shows that both vowel position and syllable structure must be considered when measuring vowel temporal acoustics or when structuring stimuli for perception experiments.

Opis:
Icon is a form of communication of the Christian dogma. Icon, as a phenomenon, developed mainly thanks to Byzantium. But Byzantium was not the only place the work of iconography. The icons were created in both the West and the East not Byzantine. For the Arab Christians, the centre of the icon was Aleppo. The influence of Islamic culture and the Arab world left a mark on Christian art, which created the characteristic form, in particular by arabesque ornamentation. Among the distinguished painters of Arabic icons in Aleppo is best known family from grandfather to grandson: Youssof, Nemeh, Hannania and Girgis. Thanks to the painters of icons, we can follow the evolution of the Arabic icons on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Also in Egypt arose Arabic icons that enriched the transmission of the Christian faith through their different specificity. Arab Christians, who today in the war are killed for their faith, they have a great history of the Christian tradition, which is also expressed in the iconography.

This paper is aimed at demonstrating that semantic-based contrastive analysis of Polish and Arabic can result in a new insight into the system of Arabic. Comparing Arabic with a language that is different both genetically and structurally, one can notice features that usually escape one’s attention. Discussing the categories of names of subjects and actions, this paper demonstrates that a comparison of the descriptions of analogous categories in Polish and Arabic grammar texts allows to cover more linguistic phenomena. It classifies derivatives according to the semantic criteria and takes into account all the possible means of expression – also those ignored by previous studies. This method makes it possible to demonstrate that in Arabic the so-called paradigmatic derivation is a highly productive word-formation technique, transforming adjectives and participles (both active and passive) into names of subjects, means, actions, places, objects, results and others. This analysis can serve as an introduction to theoretical studies that will be helpful in describing the Arabic language at all levels anew. It can also have practical application in teaching of Arabic particularly at Polish universities.

This paper is concerned with four main aspects or parts of forensic linguistics: Forensic linguistics in speech mode and in writing, the special status of Arabic, linguistic problems and possibilities of translation for forensics, and Language Analysis for Determination of Origin (LADO). After presenting these issues in the introduction, we describe the language situation of Arabic, mainly in Israel, in the context of these four issues. The discussion is based on the literature concerning problems of translation and LADO in courts of justice in various countries, including Israel. We consider LADO as a developing field of forensic linguistics, and demonstrate by examples some problems that may rise from speech recordings of Arabic speaking asylum seekers. Based on this survey, we point out in the conclusion some research needs of general forensic linguistics and Arabic related forensic linguistics.

The primary progressive aphasia (PPA) or Mesulam syndrome is an isolated and progressive deterioration of language, usually due to progressive focal atrophy of the left peri sylvian regions. Given that very little data on PPA is available in non-Western languages in the literature, we describe the first case of logopenic PPA in Arabic. Neuropsychological, neuroimaging and linguistic protocol have been administered to the patient. The Neurolinguistic assessment was carried out with the Moroccan version of the Montreal-Toulouse linguistic exploration protocol, the apraxia of speech protocol, the Moroccan version of MLSE (Mini-Linguistic Status Examination); some subtests of the BDAE (Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination) while the computerized acoustic analysis was performed with Vocalab4 ™. The acoustic analysis showed mainly instability in pitch and amplitude. However articulatory disruptions are very mild in our case. There is a parallelism between spoken language which is marked by phonological paraphasias with a „pseudostuttering „and written language disorder which displays a phonological alexia, a severe acalculia and an agraphia. Our pa tient presents L-PPA subtype 1 on the logopenic spectrum. These results are consistent with the neuropsychological hypothesis of a dysfunction in phonological buffer reflecting the features of logopenic PPA. Furthermore, our case displayed atypical neurolinguistic patterns in comparison with other cases described in the European languages due to the Arabic specific linguistic structure.
