Opis:
The research aimed to present an application of the technique based on the Dempster-Shafer theory for the determination of the shallow unconfined aquifer extent in a nonparametric (probabilistic) scale. The geology of research area is predominantly composed of the Pleistocene postglacial sediments. Only unconfined aquifers were taken into account in the study described in these paper. The resulting image showed a map of the aquifers’ extents in a probabilistic scale i.e. in a range between 0 (the lack of the aquifer, which is confirmed by research) and 1 (confirms the occurrence of the aquifer proved by research). Data analyses were carried out in the Geographic Information System. All the data were imported to the IDRISI. The Dempster-Shafer probability theory supported by the module BELIEF of IDRISI software was applied to the algebra of pixel maps.

Opis:
Pumping test are supposed to be one of the best ways of determining hydraulic parameters of examined aquifer. However, there are many other effects which control measured drawdown in a wellbore. One of the major effects is well clogging and well storage. Well clogging (also called skin effect (van Everdingen 1953)) causes additional drawdown in the well and well storage (Papadopulos & Cooper 1967) causes distortion of data in the first part of pumping test. The author shows that both these effects can be estimated from measured drawdown when two special approaches are used – first, the drawdown must be measured at very short intervals (0.5–1.0 second), and second, the pumping rates must be rather low, so the examined aquifer is not stressed enough (the drawdown in the aquifer is very small) and the skin effect/well storage influence is more significant in this case. This approach also eneables the interpreter to estimate more exact storativity coefficient, because evaluation of skin effect leads to better wellbore screen hydraulic losses estimation. Hydraulic losses caused by wellbore skin leads to the shift of Jacob’s line (Cooper & Jacob 1946) which is connected with storativity misinterpretation. A formula for eliminating this problem is also presented. Using this formula can help to estimate storativity coefficient by using measured data from pumped well. Drawdown measured in pumped well is rarely used for storativity interpretation precisely because of wellbore clogging. The formula partly eliminates that problem. In the end, application of presented approach is shown on several pumping test conducted in very permeable sand – gravel quaternary sediments of the Jizera River and the Elbe River. The pumping tests are first interpreted by casual methods – Theis (1935) and/or Moench (1997) – and then the new presented method is used. It is shown that closer to real values of storativity are gained when the newly derived formula is taken into account.

Opis:
The article identifies the hydrogeochemical environments controlling the chemical composition of groundwater in the Lódź agglomeration. The study was conducted with a different position of the groundwater table within: the Quaternary, Upper- and Lower Cretaceous aquifers. These aquifers are continuously exploited from a long time till present. The papers focuses on geogenic factors resulting from geological construction, lithology, circulation in the Lódź basin and anthropogenic factors associated with the change of the circulation system and the potential migration of pollution from the surface. The chemical composition of water from the Quaternary, Upper- and Lower Cretaceous aquifers was stable, without any anthropogenic changes. The hydrochemical inversion of water within the Cretaceous aquifers is the result of the different lithology of these aquifers and the variation in the way and magnitude of groundwater recharge.

Opis:
The rainfall irregularity in the Al-Hoceima area places the Ghis-Nekor coastal aquifer as a primary resource for water supply. However, it is of paramount priority to adopt management and optimization plans that can mitigate the effects of the irrational use of the resource and the deterioration of its quality in the region of our study. In order to study the alteration aspects of this aquifer, 26 wells were sampled and their suitability for irrigation was assessed. The sodium adsorption rate (SAR) values indicate that most groundwater samples fall into the risk classes of high salinity and low sodium (C3-S1) and high salinity and medium sodium (C3-S2). The results also show a medium to high alkalinity risk due to the high concentration of HCO3-. The excess of salts is largely due to the intensive exploitation of groundwater and to the phenomenon of salt-water intrusion into the coastal karst aquifer. As a result, the quality of groundwater is not adapted to sustainable agricultural production and soil balance, which requires controlled monitoring to ensure its rational use with a view to the sustainable development of the region.

Groundwater is the main source for many uses around the city of Ouargla. In this study, the DRASTIC method was used to assess the vulnerability of the groundwater aquifer. Seven hydrogeological parameters of the model (D water depth, R efficient charging, A aquifer type, S soil type, T topography, I unsaturated zone and C hydraulic conductivity) were measured and mapped. The intrinsic vulnerability map of the shallow aquifer, using the DRASTIC method, shows a high to very high vulnerability to pollution; 91.6% of the study area has high vulnerability, 8.4% of it has very high vulnerability. The comparison of the DRASTIC maps with the land use map illustrates that the agglomerations and irrigated areas are the most vulnerable areas to pollution, due to the low depth of the aquifer and the infiltration of significant domestic and irrigation wastewater. The results show that the relationship coefficient between the DRASTIC index and nitrate concentration is R = 0.73. This indicates that the groundwater vulnerability mapping by using the DRASTIC method can be applied for sensible groundwater resources management and land-use planning in the study area.

Regional analysis of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic geothermal aquifers in the Polish Lowlands indicates that hot waters accumulated in Lower Cretaceous and Lower Jurassic deposits should be given priority in practical utilization. Crucial for this purpose are: high level of the geological recognition of the aquifers, occurrence of thick reservoir rocks, high water discharge, relatively high temperatures, particularly in the Lower Jurassic aquifer, and relatively low costs of drilling the production and injection wells. The Lower Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous water-bearing layers are represented by sandstone complexes with very good reservoir properties. This is favourable for high water discharge, which has beneficial influence on economical justification of construction of geothermal plants. The above findings have been confirmed by the so-far geothermal investments, among others the geothermal plants in Pyrzyce and Stargard Szczeciński, which utilize geothermal waters from the Lower Jurassic aquifer. Other plants, located in Uniejów and Mszczonów, central Poland, utilize waters from the Lower Cretaceous aquifer.

Groundwater residence time in the rocky environment of sandur areas was estimated with two methods i.e.: numerical modelling along the two lines of cross-sections and an isotope method (18O, 2H, 3H) for 6 samples. Chemical parameters (TDS, Cl) confirm the general trends of enriching water mineralization along the flow path in the sandur aquifer, as well as during infiltration towards the deeper aquifers.

Opis:
Groundwater exploitation that exceeds its recharge capacity can have a negative impact on the hydrogeological environment. Optimal exploitation means maximising pumping discharge with the least reduction in the hydraulic head. In groundwater exploitation, the position of wells, number of wells, and the discharge of groundwater pumping greatly determine changes in hydraulic head and groundwater flow patterns in a given hydrological area. This article proposes an optimisation model which is expected to be useful for finding the optimal pumping discharge value from production wells in a hydrological area. This model is a combination of solving the Laplace equation for two-dimensional groundwater flow in unconfined aquifers and the optimum variable search method based on the Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE-UA) algorithm. Laplace equation uses the finite difference method for the central difference rule of the Crank Nicolson scheme. The system of equations has been solved using the M-FILE code from MATLAB. This article is a preliminary study which aims to examine the stability level of the optimisation equation system. Testing using a hypothetical data set shows that the model can work effectively, accurately, and consistently in solving the case of maximising pumping discharge from production wells in a hydrological area with a certain hydraulic head limitation. Consequently, the system of equations can also be applied to the case of confined aquifers.

Iran, being located in arid and semi-arid regions, faces an increase in human demand for water, and the global climate change has led to the excessive use of groundwater. China, India and Iran were ranked from first to third, respectively, in excessive groundwater consumption in 2005. The effects of effective parameters on groundwater recharge such as precipitation, surface recharge and well water harvesting in the Karvan aquifer are assessed. Groundwater flow models have typically been and are being adopted since the beginning of this millennium to better manage groundwater resources. The decrease in groundwater level and the potential environmental hazards thereof have made the researchers here to apply the Groundwater Modelling System (GMS software) in 3D in the subject area. This modelling is calibrated and validated for 86 months at steady and unsteady states. In this study, six scenarios are defined as both an increase and a decrease of 30% in precipitation, both an increase and a decrease of 30% in surface recharge, an increase of 10% in well water harvesting and a decrease of 30% in well water harvesting. The best scenario is selected for the subject area water management.

Faced with the challenges of sustainable groundwater resource management in the arid zone, the identification of reserves and their monitoring have become vital. This paper aims to identify the Turonian aquifer in the Cretaceous Béchar basin, and calculate its transmissivity, permeability and storage coefficient, as well as its evolution over time. This Turonian aquifer is characterized by marine limestones (gentle dip shelters 45° to the North and 5° to 10° to the South). Pumping tests revealed a transmissivity T of 10–4 to 10–2 m2·s–1, a permeability K of 10–6 to 10–4 m·s–1 and a storage coefficient S of approximately 10–3. Two piezometric campaigns, carried out between (1976–2018), show a converging and constant flow direction from the North–East to the South–West and from the North–West to the South–East towards the outlet of the basin. Decreased values were observed in the North and South–West borders due to isopiezometric lines. However, this water table is not in a stationary state, it shows seasonal and interannual fluctuations in relation to the variable rainfall and the exploitation rate. In terms of facies, the projection of the two hydrochemical campaigns, during 1976 and 2018 on the Piper diagram, did not show any significant evolution, they are concentrated in the chlorinated and sulphated calcium and magnesium facies.

The chemical composition of groundwater is affected by many features, including the impact caused by surrounding rocks. The Nile aquifer is surrounded by the calcareous structural plateau along the Assiut governorate on both sides. This paper aims at studying the effect of surrounding rocks on the chemical composition of groundwater in the Nile aquifer along the Assiut governorate. Fifty-five samples were taken from drinking water stations and irrigation wells in 2015, and then analyzed chemically in water and soil fertility laboratory located in the irrigation ministry in Assiut. Aquachem software package was used to determine the groundwater type and rock source deduction. Piper-trilinear diagram was plotted to show the hydrochemical facies. Furthermore, Gibbs diagram was applied to determine the correlation between water composition and aquifer lithological characteristics. The results revealed that nearly all of the groundwater samples drop in the water-rock interaction field. The results of rock source deduction show that the ratio of Cl to the sum of anions is less than 0.8 for all samples, concluding that the rock weathering is dominant. According to the criterion of TDS values, 78% of all the samples indicated that the carbonate weathering is prevalent; in turn, the ratio of Mg to Ca plus Mg shows that limestone-dolomite weathering is predominant. These results confirm that the calcareous structural plateau surrounding the Nile aquifer along the Assiut governorate has an effect on the groundwater chemistry by interacting between groundwater and limestone rocks which are the main component of the calcareous plateau.

The article presents geological and hydrogeological data about shallow aquifers in the western part of the Mazovian province within the town and commune of Sochaczew, in terms of the location of the planned Sochaczew IG-1 geothermal borehole and in terms of its potential for aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES). The analyzed data was from the drilled wells database of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey (PSH). Taking the PSH data into account, parameters of the planned geothermal boreholes, the characteristics of future energy consumers of the ATES as well as to European experiences, it has been found that it is possible to apply one of the variants of the ATES system (e.g. using one or two aquifers for storage). Initially the area was selected where two aquifers could be applied for the ATES system after detailed geophysical studies, tests and observations in at least one exploratory well.

Opis:
Pompy głębinowe zagrażają zatem wodom podziemnym Iranu prowadząc do kryzysu społeczno-ekonomicznego. Irańskie władze muszą znaleźć lokalny, zrównoważony sposób zaopatrzenia w wodę. W przeciwnym wypadku rosnąca liczba pomp głębinowych może doprowadzić do zniszczenia zasobów wód podziemnych, a w rezultacie do upadku irańskiego rolnictwa.

Opis:
The Zoloushka Cave, with passages >90 km long and a volume of ~0.65 million m3, is among the largest gypsum caves in the world. The cave was opened in the course of gypsum excavation in a quarry in the village of Criva (Moldova) located just near the border with Ukraine. During the quarry exploitation, with the accompanying pumping of water, the groundwater table was lowered to the bottom part of the gypsum layer. As a result of the pumping, the karst aquifer within the cave labyrinth was fragmented into separate underground reservoirs controlled by the morphology of the karst system and its content of clay deposits. Currently, there are several dozen lakes in the cave with a varied hydrodynamic regime (relict lakes, lakes with direct and indirect hydraulic connection with the aquifer). Research was carried out in February 2020 to determine the degree of, and reasons for, the hydrogeochemical diversity of 10 selected lakes of various hydrodynamic types present in the cave. The degree of variability of the hydrogeochemical parameters of these lakes was found to depend on a number of factors, mainly: the hydrodynamic type of the cave lake resulting from the degree of its hydraulic connection with the aquifer; the geochemical environment of the lake; and anthropogenic influence. The autonomizing role of these factors is the modification (within individual lakes) of the hydrogeochemical context of the transit waters flowing through the cave system to the quarry.

The depletion of aquifer systems in arid and semiarid regions worldwide is causing acute water scarcity and quality degradation, and leading to extensive ecosystem damages. Groundwater is exposed to a variety of anthropogenic water pollution, such as raw wastewater disposal in the Draa Wadi and the use of septic tanks. In this respect, a study performed in some wells of Fezouata (South-east of Morocco) aimed at both discovering the main components of the aquatic subterranean fauna unknown up to now in this area, and the potential relationships between this fauna and the water quality The principal physico-chemical characteristics of water were measured between November 2019 to March 2021 for 15 wells, which were selected considering their position with respect to the pollution sources known in surface. The Fezouata groundwater is distinguished by its high salinity with an increasing gradient from upstream to downstream. The aquatic fauna in the 15 wells showed 12 stygofauna species. In the protected wells which are situated far from the pollution sources, the fauna is dominated by Cirolanidae, Hydrobiidae, Metacrangonctydae, Stenasellidae, and Thermosbaenacea. On the other hand, in the less protected well, close to the pollution sources, the fauna is made of epigean species, such as insect’s larva, mainly Culicidae and Chironomidae. The analysis of the water quality and the subterranean biodiversity shows that the latter decreases with increasing groundwater pollution. It seems that the impact of the acute pollution affected the stygocenose even by reducing drastically the biodiversity.

This paper presents an analysis of groundwater from the intakes “Park” and “Motława” situated in Tczew (Poland). These water intakes have varied hydrological conditions and volume of utilized resources (wells). In this area, the deepest drillings extend to 180 m (cretaceous stage) with 20% being constituted by tertiary-quaternary formations with depths ranging from 60 to 63.7 m. The distribution of water from the intakes depended on the population to which it was supplied and the average production of water ranged from 5,802.4 to 7,591.5 m3 per day on “Motława” intake and from 3,196.3 to 4,125.4 m3/day on “Park” intake and did not exceed the production capacity specified by the regulations. In 1994–2009, analyses of water intended for consumption from the above-mentioned intakes in Tczew were performed by testing the water reaction and the content of ammonium ions and chlorides. In the period of the studies, the permissible reaction was not exceeded and the concentrations of ammonium ion and chlorides were on a relatively steady level.

Thirty groundwater samples were collected at the peak of the rainy season and analysed for fluoride and other cations and anions in drinking water sources of Langtang area. For comparative purposes, thirty seven groundwater samples were collected in the dry season. The aim of the study was to determine variation in fluoride content with respect to the seasons. Fluoride in water was determined by the Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) and the cations by the Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). The anion (sulphate) was determined by Multi – Ion Colorimeter, bicarbonate and chloride by titration method. In addition fluorine content in aquifer materials from a borehole section were determined by Fusion method. The two seasons show variation in content of fluoride in groundwater. Fluoride content in groundwater is higher in the dry season ranging from 0.13 – 10.3 mg/ l compared to the 0.06 – 4.60 mg/l values in the rainy season. Content of fluorine (0.01 wt %) in the aquifer materials (sands) is low from depth of 0 to 7.95 m. However, fluorine content increases with depth, from 7.95 to 10.60 m with concentration of 0.04 wt %, 0.05 wt % from 10.60 to 13.25m, and 0.07 wt % from 13.25 to 15.70 m, the content of fluorine however, decreased at depth 15.70 to18.55m with concentration of 0.02 wt % even with fluorite mineral in the aquifer material at this depth. Dilution of fluoride ion as a result of rain input which recharges the aquifer may be the main reason for lower values recorded in the rainy season. Over fifty and sixty percent of waters in both dry and rainy season have fluoride concentration above the WHO upper limit of 1.5 mg/l. Consumption of these elevated values of fluoride in groundwater of the study area, clearly manifests as symptoms of dental fluorosis.

The advective property of an aquifer in the Eastern Niger Delta was evaluated using a conservative tracer. Tracer migration was monitored in observation boreholes at various radial distances simultaneously. Particle size distribution analysis for the sand samples collected from the boreholes in the study site revealed aquifer composition to be predominantly fine sand (silt =13.42%, fine sand = 41.76%, medium sand = 36.71% and coarse sand = 8.09%) for the 8m depth sampled. This field tracer test thus, provides a definitive data on the simultaneous transport of a soluble contaminant and allows a quantitative appraisal of the advective property of the study site. The mean velocity determined 1.212×10-3 ms-1, represents the advective velocity of groundwater carrying the dissolved tracer substance. This is an indication of how soluble components of hydrocarbon will be transported in the study area. Modeling tracer migration by advection process to estimate where and when a soluble contaminant problem can first be noticed in an environmental matrix and its application in hydrological studies is an effective tool to address problems such as sustainability and uncertainty in groundwater resource system.

Opis:
The complex nature of flow dynamic of water at the subsurface makes it difficult to characterize directly the processes taking place in a porous medium. As a result, carrying out studies on the characteristics of contaminants at the subsurface often relies on indirect measurements of the parameters of the system. To overcome these difficulties and provide information on the subsurface, the continuous use of tracers in simulation studies to model hydrological characteristics at the subsurface has provided an important tool for understanding the flow and mixing dynamics of water resource systems. Results obtained from this radial flow tracer test shows coefficient of longitudinal and transverse dispersion of 2.104×10-3 m2s-1 and 1.54×10-3 m2s-1 respectively, longitudinal and transverse dispersivity of 1.73m and 1.27m respectively. Multidimensional transport in an aquifer involves both longitudinal and transverse dispersion in addition to advection process. Transverse dispersion in an aquifer spreads dissolved contaminant by molecular diffusion when flow velocity of groundwater is highly low. Initial concentration of dissolved contaminants at the point of release can produce an upstream spreading in a longitudinal transverse direction by molecular dispersion which is a diffusion-like process in an aquifer. Results obtained from tracer test can be used to characterize a site and for groundwater monitoring. Having basic knowledge of some physical processes taking place at the subsurface such as that produced from tracer test can also help in the design of environmental network to evaluate possible accidental migration of contaminants once it occur in aquifers and plan suitable mitigation actions to safeguard our water resource.

Denitrification is the only process leading to reduction of nitrate concentration in groundwater. In this paper the authors report the results of combined measurements of excess gaseous nitrogen and 18O and 15N isotope composition of dissolved nitrate in fissured-karstic Triassic aquifer located in southwestern Poland, in the vicinity of Opole. Generally, the wells located in the confined part of the aquifer reveal greatly reduced nitrate content (ca. 0.3 and 2.7 mg NO3/dm3). Such decrease of nitrate content together with δ18O and δ15N data for those wells suggest well-advanced denitrification process. Enrichment in 15N and 18O of the remaining nitrate corresponds to initial nitrate content in the order of 1.5 to 12 mg NO3/dm3. Lack of tritium in those wells suggest the pre-bomb age of water and natural range of initial nitrate content. In majority of the measured wells nitrogen excess has been below the detection limit of ca. 3.5 mg NO3/dm3. This method is not sensitive enough to detect denitrification of natural nitrate which concentrations in groundwater in the study area were generally below 10 mg NO3/dm3. The presented study demonstrated that combining isotope analyses of nitrates with tritium or other transient tracers may provide additional insights into the dynamics of water and nitrate transformation in groundwater systems.

It has been increasingly realised that geological storage of CO2 is a prospective option for reduction of CO2 emissions. The CO2 geological storage potential of sedimentary basins with the territory of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and the Baltic States is here assessed, and different storage options have been considered. The most prospective technology is hydrodynamic trapping in the deep saline aquifers. The utilisation of hydrocarbon (HC) fields is considered as a mature technology; however storage capacities are limited in the region and are mainly related to enhanced oil (gas) recovery. Prospective reservoirs and traps have been identified in the Danube, Vienna and East Slovakian Neogene basins, the Neogene Carpathian Foredeep, the Bohemian and Fore-Sudetic Upper Paleozoic basins, the Mesozoic Mid-Polish Basin and the pericratonic Paleozoic Baltic Basin. The total storage capacity of the sedimentary basins is estimated to be as much as 10170 Mt of CO2 in deep saline aquifer structures, and 938 Mt CO2 in the depleted HC fields. The utilisation of coal seams for CO2 storage is related to the Upper Silesian Basin where CO2 storage could be combined with enhanced recovery of coal-bed methane.

Opis:
Groundwater is a vital resource for domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities, as well as for ecosystem services. Despite this, the resource is under significant threat, due to increasing contamination from anthropogenic activities. Therefore, to ensure its reliability for present and future use, effective management of groundwater is important not only in terms of quantity (i.e. abstraction) but also quality. This can be achieved by identifying areas that are more vulnerable to contamination and by implementing protective measures. To identify the risk and delineate areas that are more exposed to pollution, various groundwater vulnerability assessment techniques have been developed across the globe. This paper presents an overview of some of the commonly used groundwater vulnerability assessment models in terms of their unique features and their application. Special emphasis is placed on statistical methods and overlay-index techniques. The assessment of the literature shows that statistical methods are limited in application to the assessment of groundwater vulnerability to pollution because they rely heavily on the availability of sufficient and quality data. However, in areas where extensive monitoring data are available, these methods estimate groundwater vulnerability more realistically in quantitative terms. Many works of research indicate that index-overlay methods are used extensively and frequently in groundwater vulnerability assessments. Due to the qualitative nature of these models, however, they are still subject to modification. This study offers an overview of a selection of relevant groundwater vulnerability assessment techniques under a specific set of hydro-climatic and hydrogeological conditions.

Selected quality parameters of groundwater from four artesian wells of the Jurassic aquifer located in the center of Krakow (Cracow) are presented. Water from these public wells i.e. Nadzieja, Jagielloński, Królewski and Lajkonik, during 20 years of exploitation, has had constant bacteriological purity and rather constant chemical composition. A comparison of nitrates concentration in the investigated wells with Quaternary wells located in the same area, and with municipal drinking water in Krakow shows that water from the above-mentioned four wells is characterized by the lowest concentration of NO3 ions. Very low nitrate and nitrite concentration suggests that despite passage of time the chemical composition of water from the investigated intakes is not affected by anthropogenic pollution because of isolation of water reservoir due to geological conditions.

Opis:
The major groundwater resources in Poland come from Quaternary aquifers. Rich in groundwater are structures of contemporary river valleys and of buried valleys, that comprise sands and gravels of glaciofluvial origin. Groundwater aquifers cover water demands of ca. 2.1 km3 annually. 65% of drinking water in Poland comes from groundwater intakes. Recharge zones of these aquifers are usually located in highlands – moraine plateau, and discharge zones are located in deep and wide river valleys. The average thickness of fresh water aquifers is about 200 m in Poland. The fresh water was stated even over 1,000 m depth in some places, but in the Mesozoic strata. The thickness of fresh water aquifer reduces, however, to only few metres in areas of salt water ascension or intrusion along the Baltic coast area. Recognition of groundwater circulation systems is the basis for delineation of a groundwater body (GWB). In Poland, the most productive parts of groundwater bodies that allow to abstract water at a rate grater that 10,000 m3/day, are defined as Major Groundwater Basins (MGWBs). The mean residence time of groundwater in Quaternary aquifers in Poland is estimated at some 50 yrs, whereas the residence time of water in sluggish circulation systems in deeper strata exceeds 104 yrs. Quaternary aquifers situated close to the surface area are vulnerable to municipal and agricultural pollution. The geogenic pollution such as sea water intrusion or ascension of brines are observed mainly at lowlands along the Baltic coastline, in vicinity of water intakes, or on an axial zone of anticlinoria. Trends in lowering a groundwater table are noted in the central part of the Polish lowlands and are associated with climatic variability or lignite opencast dewatering.

The research mainly aimed to present a novel application of the technique based on the Dempster-Shafer theory for the determination of the aquifer extent in a nonparametric (probabilistic) scale. Data analyses were carried out in the Geographic Information System. All the data were imported to the IDRISI 32 release 2. The Dempster-Shafer probability theory supported by the module BELIEF of IDRISI software was applied to the algebra of pixel maps. The research area covers 1300 km^2 in the eastern part of the Pomeranian Lakeland. The geology of this area is dominated by Pleistocene postglacial sediments. The study area comprises unconfined aquifers and four main confined aquifers. Only the unconfined aquifers were taken into account in the study described in these paper. The resulting image showed a map of the aquifers’ extents in a probabilistic scale, i.e., in a range between 0 (lack of the aquifer confirmed by field research) and 1 (occurrence of the aquifer, also proved by research).

The Mio-plio-quaternary aquifer of the Djelfa Syncline is part of a region in Algeria which is characterized by the lack of surface water resources and located in a semi-arid climate. Since alluvial aquifers, and among them our aquifer, are the most vulnerable because of thier direct exposure to the pollution caused by the infiltrated pollutants, this work focused on the assessement of groundwater pollution vulnerability, hazard and risk. Thus, several methods were used; for this purpose, such as the DRASTIC and WQI methods mapped using a GIS. The results obtained clearly show a low to moderate vulnerability. The DRASTIC model and its validation based on the correlation with WQI revealed a low correlation ($WQ_I$vs $D_I$ : 0.221). Since the vulnerability model does not match with the groundwater quality, pollution risk was assessed by combining vulnerabilty and hazard (i.e, water quality). The risk map illustrated three levels ranging from low to high risk. This map should be helpful in decision making and groundwater management through avoiding high risk areas.

Opis:
Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) may be considered beneficial due to lack of negative environmental impact, innovation and potential for further development. The state of knowledge on ATES and its potential to be combined with groundwater remediation was analyzed on the basis of literature data and operating experience. Chlorinated hydrocarbons and BTEX are the contaminants most frequently occurring at depths, where ATES systems usually operate. The following remediation techniques that potentially could be combined with ATES systems were discussed: ‛pump and treat’, natural (NA) and enhanced natural attenuation (ENA) via biostimulation and bioaugmentation, as well as in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) under anaerobic conditions. Development of such solutions is constrained by problems related mainly to the risk of accelerated contaminant migration and reduction of their biodegradation rates as a result of changes in redox potential due to ATES system operation and well screen clogging. Further research is required to confirm effectiveness of the combined application of ATES and groundwater remediation in practice as the knowledge of the aquifer processes upon thermal energy storage is incomplete and the operating experience limited.

The paper presents spatial analysis and numerical methods to describe the hydrodynamic and hydrochemical conditions in a groundwater system. The research was conducted in the northern part of the Białystok High Plane, eastern Poland, within a Quaternary multi-aquifer system. Spatial analysis was used for imaging the quasi-continuous structure of the system based on a discrete set of hydrogeological data. A high-resolution regional flow model was used to identify the groundwater discharge and discharge zones of the individual aquifers. Calculations have shown a marked asymmetry of the flow system. Deeply incised river valleys in the Niemen River basin more strongly affect the groundwater than the discharge zones in the valleys of the Vistula River basin. As a result, the underground watershed in deeper aquifers is clearly shifted westward in relation to the morphological watershed. The hydrodynamic conditions of the system determined by numerical methods were used to identify the points along the groundwater flow-path for the hydrochemical study. It was the basis for the identification of points located along the groundwater flow direction, which were used in the hydrochemical study. Computational schemes of water solution models were calculated for the quasi-equilibrium state of chemical reactions between the solution and the solid and gaseous phases. Presentation of the chemical reactions allowed determining the origin of changes in the concentrations of individual components dissolved in groundwater. It was found that kaolinitization, i.e. chemical weathering of feldspars and plagioclases is the basic process that most affects the groundwater chemistry.

Differentiation of groundwater flow conditions within the floodplains of the river valleys in the Polish Lowlands may result from polygenesis of their valleys sections, as well as from the evolution of river systems, which lasts from the end of the Pleistocene. The investigations, which were carried out in the middle Vistula valley showed that important factor for differentiation of groundwater flow conditions within the floodplain could be also the influence of the basement of contemporary alluvia. In the sections where it forms morphological protrusions, the basement affects the flood waters flow which transforms upper part of floodplain lithological profile.

Na terenie Wielkopolski w utworach miocenu lądowego strefowo występują wody intensywnie zabarwione, o barwie rzędu kilkuset do kilku tysięcy mg Pt/l. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe informacje o występowaniu i genezie wód zabarwionych w Wielkopolsce oraz zaprezentowano wyniki wstępnych badań chemicznych tych wód z pięciu wybranych otworów.
The Miocene aquifer formations of the Wielkopolska region are marked by the zonal occurrence of “brown water” with the colour intensity ranging from several hundred to several thousand mg Pt/l. Its origin is linked to the presence of organic matter dispersed in the sand formations, and the zonal character of its occurrence results from the paleohydrogeological conditions of water circulation and exchange. Brown water is not suitable for drinking purposes, and its co-occurrence with the water of low colour intensity impedes the exploitation of usable water. However, in view of the conducted pharmacodynamic analysis, such water shows high biological activity and has beneficial influence on living organisms. Therefore, it can be applied in balneotherapy. The article presents basic information on the occurrence and origin of brown water in the Wielkopolska region, as well as the results of preliminary chemical analyses of brown water collected from five selected wells. The study revealed that brown water containing humus substances amounting to over 200 mg/l and showing high colour durability following its collection from the water-bearing layer is especially useful for the purposes of therapy. Such water was found in two out of the five studied wells, and it can be used for baleotherapeutical purposes.

A majority of known models based on two-phase flow theory ignores the influence of the capillary pressure on the phase contact. This results in a description of a phenomenon based on the Bucley -Lewerett equation being a quasi linear partial differential equation of the first order. By accounting for the capillary pressure the mathematical model assumes a form of a differential parabolic equation of second order, having solutions of quite a different character. A mathematical model accounting for capillary pressure and a computer model described with a simulator "Black-Oil" were made. Variant modeling for various capillary pressure values was made. On this basis conclusions were drawn on the propagation of oil contaminations and the respective remediation works

Results of the Vistula Delta Plain Quaternary recharge analysis are presented in this paper. This region is situated south of Gdańsk city near the Bay of Gdańsk. There are two municipal intakes situated on the Vistula Delta Plain: Lipce and Grodza Kamienna. Different exploitation of the municipal intakes is considered. The numerical calculations are made for the pre- 1969 period before the Lipce intake started discharging the Quaternary aquifer in the steady-state conditions and for the 15 years period after the opening of the Lipce intake, in the transient conditions. The results of calculations of the natural state of the Vistula Delta Plain Quaternary aquifer are also presented. The numerical calculations were carried out using the Modflow and Modpath code in Groundwater Modelling System (GMS 2.1) package. Presented results of numerical calculations show that the Quaternary aquifer exploited by groundwater intakes Lipce and Grodza Kamienna is connected with inflow from the Martwa Wisła River into the Vistula Delta Plain Quaternary aquifer and confirm the Quaternary aquifer groundwater flow evaluation based on Cl– ions concentration in the observation wells.

Electrical resistivity investigation was carried out at Ibeju Lekki, Southwestern Nigeria. The thrust of this study is to determine the geoelectrical parameters of the shallow aquifer and estimate the hydraulic characteristics of this aquifer unit from the surface geophysics. The area falls within the Dahomey basin of the Nigeria sedimentary terrain. Twenty-one VES were conducted using Shlumberger array with a maximum half current electrode (AB/2) of 100 m giving total spread of 200 m. Data were interpreted using partial curve matching technique and assisted 1-D forward modeling with WINRESIST software. The qualitative interpretation revealed KQ curves (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 > ρ4) and KH curve (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 < ρ4). The geoelectric section generated from the results of the VES revealed a four geo-electric layers; these include topsoil with resistivity ranging from 213-5404 Ωm, dry sand with resistivity values vary from 301to 17178 Ωm, saturated sand with resistivity varying from 110 to1724 Ωm and sand (saline water content) with resistivity values of between 8 and 97 Ωm. The major aquifer in the area occurs at the third geoelectric layer. The depth to this aquifer is of between 0.7m and 6.0m and the layer thickness is between 0.2 m and 19.9 m. The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer estimated from the geoelectric parameters reveal that the aquifer has porosity values of between 29.4 % and 57.7 %, protective capacities of between 0.00013 and 0.015 mhos, transverse resistance ranges from 345-18502 Ωm2, transmissivity values vary from 13 to 310 m2/day and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 0.8-65 m/day. The results show that the aquifer is characterized by high porosity and low protective capacities of overburden layers indicating that it is highly vulnerable to surface contamination. It has high transverse resistance, high transmissivity, and high hydraulic conductivity indicating that the aquifer can transmit water at higher rate and sustain the need of the community. This study has demonstrated the efficacy of surface geophysics in estimating hydraulic characteristics of an aquifer where pumping test data are not available and also to determine its vulnerability to surface contaminants.

Opis:
This work performed by considering two complementary approaches for investigating the Karst system of Ras El Ma source: (1) The structural approach based on field studies, (2) The functional approach requiring inputs data (precipitations) as well as output data at the exit of the karstic system. The choice of the Ras El Ma source is justified by the fact that it constitutes the main outlet of the Liassic aquifer at the Southwest of Taza town. The structural approach highlighted that the impact of South Rifan and North Middle Atlas faults, oriented mainly NE-SW to ENE-WSW and NW-SE, tectonically linked to the Hercynian and late-Hercynian phases; these faults compartmentalized the karst into panels. The functioning of this karst system is based on the coupling of inputs and outputs, the analysis of interannual hydrograph, flood hydrographs, the recession curves and the analysis of hydrogeochemical results. Respectively, the obtained results are presented as follows: A close relationship between flow rates and precipitation, interannual hydrographs marked by a contrasting variation in flow rates and a periodicity that occurs between low water and high-water years. Concerning flood hydrographs, there are two types, a unit modal hydrographs type which generally occurs following time concentrated rainfall and a second multi modal hydrographs type which follows the repetitive rainfall in the basin. The study of recession curves reveals a clear complexity of the systems supplying the source. However, due to the low drying-off coefficients (7.66∙10-4), the aquifer seems to have a poorly developed drainage network in a flooded area. According to the Mangin method [1975], this karstic system is classified in the category of poor or complex karst systems taking into accounts two parameters (i) and (K), which characterize the functioning of the infiltration zone and the volume of flooded karst, respectively. The physicochemical parameters study highlighted the nature of drained rock by the sources. The correlation between conductivity and different chemical elements shows that bicarbonates and calcium are responsible for the mineralization of the waters of this source. It can be concluded that the low values of mineralization occur during the winter and spring floods. The spring regains its normal mineralization during the summer period.

The manner of estimating water drive gas reservoir recovery can vary considerably. Several mathematical models have been developed for estimating water influx in petroleum industry, but the current paper will address the application of Fetkovich aquifer model to predict the gas reservoir performance considering the pressure changes that gradually occur within the aquifer and between the aquifer and reservoir. The applicability of this model has proven to be extremely useful in estimation of initial gas resources, aquifer volume and its parameters, confirming the producing mechanism but also forecasting the production performance of the gas reservoir. The authors will highlight through some case studies, the importance of the water influx analysis and prediction, in particular for natural gas reservoirs, which subsequently allows for adequate planning in optimizing the reserves’ recovery.

The paper presents the results of a preliminary study of geology and hydrogeological conditions of a Grudziądz groundwater intake. The focus of the study was to develop a conceptual model that will be used in further investigation to create a hydrogeological model. In the intake area two multi-aquifer formations have been distinguished: Quaternary and Paleocene-Cretaceous. The Quartenary multi-aquifer formation, which consists of two aquifers separated by poorly permeable rocks, is primary utility. Groundwater in the Paleocene-Cretaceous aquifer has an elevated mineral content, which makes it not usable. The intake is located near Grudziądz and areas of intense farming, which leads to a hazard of anthropopressure, and may have a negative impact on the groundwater quality and quantity. In-office work conducted for the preparation of article included gathering and description of archival data from over 120 years of intake existence. Data from 53 hydrogeological boreholes have been analyzed. In 2017, field work was also conducted, including several measurements of water table in wells and piezometers of the intake. Water samples have also been collected for chemical analyses. An efficiency assessment of some observation wells has been made, establishing their hydrogeological parameters using the PARAMEX method.

Opis:
During the research, 71 groundwater samples were collected over a 300 km2 area of Tirana-Fushe Kuqe alluvial aquifer extension (central-western Albania) and subsequently analyzed for 11 parameters (pH, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, TH and TDS). Both geochemical conventional (Piper and Chadha diagrams) methods of groundwater classification and multivariate statistical (principal components analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA) methods were applied to the dataset to evidence the geochemical processes controlling groundwater geochemistry evaluation through the aquifer. The conventional geochemical methods revealed four (G1–G4) hydrochemical groups where the dominant group is G2 the samples of which are from unconfined to semiconfined recharge zone and the majority of them have Ca-Mg-HCO3 groundwater. Group G3 includes the samples from the confined coastal aquifer having Na-Cl groundwater. Group G1 includes three groundwater samples of Ca-Mg-SO4 from the central part of the aquifer, while group G4, the samples of which are spatially located between G3 and G2 zones, has Na-HCO3 groundwater. The first four components of the PCA account for 85.35% of the total variance. Component PC1 is characterized by very high positive loadings of TH, Ca2+, and Mg2+, suggesting the importance of dissolution processes in the aquifer recharge zone. Component PC2 is characterized by very high positive loadings in Na+, K+, and Cl-and moderate to high loadings of TDS, revealing the involvement of seawater intrusion and diffusion from clay layers. On the basis of their variable loadings, the first two components are defined as the “hardness” and “salinity”, respectively. The HCA produced four geochemically distinct clusters, C1–C4. The samples of cluster C1 are from the coastal confined aquifer and their groundwater belongs to the Na-Cl type. The samples from cluster C2 are located in the south and east recharge areas and most of them have Ca–Mg–HCO3 groundwater, while the samples from cluster C3, which are located in the northeastern recharge zone, have Mg-Ca–HCO3 groundwater. Finally, cluster C4 includes two groundwater subgroups having Na-Cl-HCO3 and Na-Mg-Cl-HCO3 groundwater in the vicinity of cluster C1 as well as Na-HCO3-Cl and Na-Mg-HCO3-Cl groundwater next to cluster C2 and C3.

According to UN experts, by 2030, about half of the world’s population will suffer from a shortage of fresh water, which may cause future hostilities and conflicts. In this regard, extraction of such a valuable mineral as groundwater must be rationally managed. However, practice has shown that managing and protecting the groundwater resources is a very challenging task. As part of the analysis pertaining to the problem of legal regulation of groundwater extraction from transboundary aquifers and complexes, it is proposed to consider this aspect on the example of Russia. The problems of regulation of rational use and protection of fresh water in the bilateral agreements of the Russian Federation were identified; a methodology for managing groundwater extraction in the territory of a transboundary aquifer was developed, dimensions, parameters and factors affecting the formation of a transboundary zone were determined (using the example of research and analysis of water intake activities in the border territories of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Estonia).

Opis:
Water quality along the Waratah Rivulet in the Woronora Lake Catchment, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has been monitored during the last three years by the Sydney Catchment Authority. Water quality data shows changes in chemical composition due to cracking of streambeds and rockbars, and diversion of surface water into subsurface routes in the Hawkesbury Sandstone aquifer. Water quality upstream of the longwall panels is comparable to nearly pristine water in creeks and rivers flowing in similar sandstone bedrock environments and to limited water quality data collected prior to mining. A segment of the Waratah Rivulet, where subsidence and cracking of streambeds and rockbars has occurred, is causing surface water to be redirected into subsurface fracture systems, mix with groundwater already present in the aquifer and partially reappear downstream. This subsurface flow in the shallow fractured sandstone aquifer causes the chemical composition and water quality to change as an effect of water–rock interactions. Salinity, iron, manganese and many cation and anion concentrations increase, whereas oxygen is significantly depleted. Mobilisation of barium and strontium from the rock mass indicates fast chemical dissolution reactions between the subsurface flow and carbonate minerals. Other metals mobilised include zinc, cobalt and nickel. Subsurface water partially discharges from underground receptors downstream of the area impacted by longwall mining. The discharged water is rapidly oxidised by atmospheric oxygen, causing precipitation of iron and manganese oxides / hydroxides out of solution. Hydrogeochemical modelling indicates the dominant iron minerals precipitated out from the water are in this environment goethite, lepidocrocite and ferrihydrite. The paper discusses changes in surface water and groundwater chemistry due to subsurface flow and water–rock interaction, the hydrogeochemical processes responsible for changes in water chemistry, as well as changes in water quality along the rivulet.

Opis:
In the catchment of the Noor brook, by the Dutch/Belgian border, excess precipitation with high nitrate concentrations (80-120 mgˇl-1) recharges the Cretaceous multi-aquifer system under the plateau and foothill (agricultural area). The nitrates are transported through the aquifer (median NO3-> 50 mgˇl-1 under the plateau) towards springs and wetlands of the Noorbeemden nature reserve. The major spring has a concentration of 70-80 mgˇl-1. The concentration in the Noor brook is somewhat lower (median 46 mgˇl-1) because of denitrification in the wetlands. The groundwater flow and transport model FLONET/TRANS was used to simulate the development of the nitrate distribution in the last 50 years. The general NO3-distribution in the northern part of the catchment could be reasonably well predicted, whereas the concentrations in the southern part were underestimated by about 20 mgˇl-1. The simulated future trend in the northern part of the catchment in the next 100 years shows that a reduction of nitrate leaching by 50% is required to level off the currently still increasing concentrations. A dramatic decrease of leaching by 75% is needed to achieve pre-1950's concentrations. This implies that the management plan of the Noorbeemden Nature Reserve, which is complied by the Nature Conservation Organisation, should not aim at botanical restoration in the first decades, even if severe restrictions in nitrogen application are imposed on the farmers now.

Opis:
The presented studies focus on changes in groundwater levels and chemistry, and the identification of important factors influencing these changes on short- and long-term scales in urban areas. The results may be useful for rational and sustainable groundwater planning and management in cities. The studies concerned three aquifers: (1) the shallow Quaternary aquifer, (2) the deep Quaternary aquifer, and (3) the Oligocene aquifer in the capital city of Warsaw (Poland). The spatial variability of groundwater recharge was determined and its changes in time were characterized. The characteristics of groundwater levels were based on long-term monitoring series. The results indicate that urban development has caused overall reduction in infiltration recharge (from 54 to 51 mm/year), which is particularly clear in the city suburbs and in its centre, where land development has significantly densified during the last 30 years. Studies of groundwater levels indicate variable long-term trends. However, for the shallowest aquifer, the trends indicate a gradual decrease of the groundwater levels. In the case of the much deeper Oligocene aquifer, groundwater table rise is observed since the 1970s (averagely c. 20 m), which is related with excessive pumping. Based on the studied results, the groundwater chemistry in the subsurface aquifer indicates strong anthropogenic influence, which is reflected in multi-ionic hydrogeochemical types and the occurrence of chemical tracers typical of human activity. The Oligocene aquifer is characterized by a chemical composition indicating the influence of geogenic factors.

Opis:

Opis:
The Miechów Trough and the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep in southern Poland have a highly complex geological structure and numerous fault zones. These features play a significant role in hydrogeological conditions of the area. In this area drinking water, medicinal groundwater or thermal groundwater occur, so recognition of their circulations is basic for reasonable groundwater management. In this note, a hydrogeological conceptual model, created for the purpose of regional scale mathematical modelling, is presented. This conceptual model illustrates the geology of the hydrogeological system modelled, as well as hydrogeological conditions and characteristics of groundwater circulation, as determined by tectonics. Typical of the research area is the wide diversity of geological and hydrogeological conditions. The Busko-Zdrój area, a region with a long history of exploitation of medicinal groundwater, presents the best example.
