The paper presents conclusions of the survey conducted in Gdańsk in October 2017. The study aimed to compare travel times between the largest residential districts in Gdańsk and the area of the businessacademic center. The research was aimed at showing time losses on the commuting trips and their organizational and infrastructural causes, which lead to the extension of the actual travel time. Based on the identiefid time losses and their causes, recommendations regarding further organizational and investment work were presented to improve the competitiveness of public urban transport and bicycles in relation to the cars.

W artykule zostały omówione problemy związane z funkcjonowaniem transportu osób na terenie miast. Dynamiczny rozwój miast i wzrost dochodu ludności w wielu przypadkach przyczynił się do ograniczenia roli transportu publicznego i nadmiernego wzrostu ruchu samochodów osobowych. Tendencja ta jest szkodliwa dla środowiska. Pociąga za sobą wzrost zapotrzebowania na paliwa ropopochodne, ogranicza komfort życia w mieście i w efekcie końcowym na skutek kongestii generuje dodatkowe koszty związane z działalnością firm i ludzi na obszarze miejskim. Zgodnie z polityką UE ta szkodliwa tendencja musi zostać ograniczona. Przyczynić do tego ma się w znacznym stopniu rozwój transportu zrównoważonego. Na przykładzie miasta Rzeszowa omówione zostały wybrane działania i środki przedsięwzięte w ramach rozwoju transportu zrównoważonego.
The article presented the problems connected with the operation of people transport in cities. The dynamic development of cities and the increase in the income of the population has in many cases contributed to limiting the role of public transport and the excessive growth of passenger traffic. This tendency is harmful to the environment. It entails an increase in the demand for petroleum fuels, reduces the comfort of living in the city and, as a result, congestion generates additional costs for businesses and people in urban areas. In line with EU policies, this damaging tendency must be limited. The development of sustainable transport is to a large extent possible. An example of the city of Rzeszow is described the selected actions and measures undertaken within the framework of the development of sustainable transport.

Public transportation provides its services to both urban centers and neighboring areas in the immediate vicinity of the city. The problem of urban transportation is evident, the number of people willing to use public transportation has decreased. Therefore, there is a need to delve into the issue and conduct an analysis of the demand for urban transportation in Poland in 2000-2030, this will allow us to assess in what direction urban transportation is heading, whether there is an increase in the number of people using it, or whether there is a downward trend (Zielińska 2018). Based on CSO statistics from 2009-2020 for the analysis of demand for public transportation in Poland, a forecast of people using public transportation was conducted using Statistica software for 2021-2030. Due to the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, the study was conducted in 2 ways – with and without 2020. Public transportation will make less and less profit and even losses for the next few years through rising gasoline and energy prices. Virtually in each of the provinces, and likewise throughout Poland, a decline in the number of people willing to use public transportation is evident. conclusions. On the basis of the surveys carried out, there is a general trend that shows the current state of public transport. In most of the cases studied, a similar conclusion emerges, namely that public transport will experience a marked decline in the coming years. The number of people who want to use public transport will decrease, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and people’s fears for their own safety.

The issues of sustainable development and functioning of the municipal transport system in Olsztyn discussed in the article evoke vivid social and political interests of the city's inhabitants. This is mainly due to the impact of transport operation on quality of life, the correlation of its development with the economic development of the city, and the strong impact of transport on the natural environment. Today, it is already known that a coherent and modern transport system is an indispensable element of a competitive city. Connecting the city into a functional system, it presents it as a system of interdependencies between its elements.

W pracy podjęto próbę oceny poziomu zagrożeń wynikających z zamierzonych lub niezamierzonych działań ludzi usytuowanych systemach transportu drogowego oraz ich otoczeniu.
Road transport systems are socio-technical systems of the type Human - Technical object- Environment . In these systems, the following can cause hazards: man C, the technical object OT, and the influence of the environment on the technical object and the people who are present in the system and its environment. The authors of the paper make an attempt to evaluate the level of threats resulting from intended or unintended actions of people situated in this environment.

Many European cities have initiated actions in the matter of creating sustainable transport systems that is useful for the society, economical and ecological, through utilization of modes of transport of better environmental performance. Many solutions promoting sustainable transport are being implemented such as electric vehicle rentals, separate infrastructure for collective transport, joint ticket systems, low emission zones or park&ride systems. The paper presents legal regulations and guidelines related to the principles and methods of creation of sustainable urban transport. In second part of paper, actions and measures facilitating the reduction of the impact of transport on the environment carried out by selected European cities are discussed.

In the recent years, the European Community has been implementing a plan to increase the share of renewable fuels used for energy production and powering vehicles. It aims to partially reduce the dependence on crude oil imports and reduce CO2 emission. Particularly interesting are the achievements of Sweden against this background, for which the European Commission has set the highest value of the indicator, and to implement which Sweden adopted unconventional solutions across Europe. One of them is the plan to eliminate by the 2030 fossil fuels from the urban transport, and one of the fuels that is to replace today still widely used diesel oil, would be biomethane. The article describes the reasons and circumstances which made Sweden use biomethane to power buses used in urban transport on a very large scale, in comparison with other European countries. The article shows the characteristics of this fuel, the method of its production and application prospects.

The maintenance of devices is now a critical element in the functioning of manufacturing enterprises. The situation is similar in the transport industry. The technical condition of the vehicles is dependent upon operational procedures that affect the quality of services, comfort and the amount of incurred operating expenses. The aim of this paper is to compare the standards in vehicle service companies which deal with passenger transport in Poland and South Africa. In this study particular attention is paid to the influence of the human factor (passenger expectations, cultural conditions, required standards) in the implementation of this service. The authors based their research on available literature, newspaper articles, direct observation, surveys among Wroclaw’s inhabitants, and interviews with the residents of Johannesburg and the management staff of transport companies.

Celem pracy było wybranie określonej grupy kryteriów względem których wykonane zostały badania ankietowe. Dotyczyły one pomiaru jakości funkcjonowania wybranego systemu komunikacji miejskiej. Na bazie określonej, ilościowej oceny kryteriów wyznaczono luki jakościowe. Kolejno dokonano analizy statystycznej uzyskanych wyników oraz przeprowadzono badanie punktualności kursowania autobusów.
The aim of this work was to select a specific set of criteria against which were made survey. They relate to measure of the quality of functioning selected urban transport system. On the basis of certain quantitative assessment of criteria the quality gap was set. Successively the statistical analysis in regards to obtained results was made and conducted the punctuality research of bus services.

The main goal of this paper is to understand the interconnections between cultural and functional aspects of car exploitation. It is argued that these two aspects should be considered as different sides of the same automobility phenomenon, which has a great impact on the transportation preferences of citizens. In order to explain how the interconnections would influence each other and shape the preferences, the analysis results are considered within the framework of a biographical approach, with particular attention to the adulthood transition. The paper provides evidence that the mobility orientation of many local inhabitants changes as a result of obtaining a job. At this biographical stage, the growing importance of the dominating strategy of “being a driver” could be observed, mainly due to different socially constructed requirements, e.g. the demonstration of buyer power, flexibility and multi-functional existence. Finally, it is also emphasized that the interconnections strengthening the role of private cars should not be considered in terms of what does not change, since they trigger opposition discourses which criticise automobility domination.

W artykule omówiony został problem nowo pojawiających się form indywidualnego transportu miejskiego, jako alternatywy dla systemu taksówek i użytkowania własnych pojazdów samochodowych. Celem pracy było przedstawienie kierunków możliwego rozwoju miejskiego transportu indywidualnego w oparciu o wyniki przeprowadzonej ankiety.
This paper gives a summation of two most popular individual transport companies available in Krakow, Uber and TrafiCar. These are modern urban alternatives for the standard means of transport, taxi cabs and public transportation. Selected companies give a customer the opportunity to use a combination of modern technology (Uber) and completely different attitude to the process of transportation (TrafiCar) - carsharing. Modern solutions can substitute old-fashioned means of transport. Flexible market proves that there is still a plenty of room for innovative solutions. The results of questionnaire presented on social media on a group of 285, mostly young (18-25 years old) people, proved that major factor in selection are the price of the product. Described companies predicate their strategy on price. The other key elements for mostly young people are the possibility of a use of modern technologies and comfort of travelling. The future of transportation gives a chance for both, private companies and city solutions. Local authorities plan to introduce their own way of carsharing as an impulse given from young companies that aggressively stepped in changed the market. The possibility of harmonic coexistence ensures constant of individual transport solutions in the city.

Koncepcja trzeciej linia metra w Warszawie, która jest przedmiotem artykułu, ma charakter wstępnej analizy. Przede wszystkim obecna sieć metra w Warszawie, która jest obecnie rozbudowywana (trwa budowa drugiej linii metra – odcinka zachodniego i wschodniego), wobec sieci kolei podziemnej w innych porów-nywalnych metropoliach Europy (do 2 mln mieszkańców) – np. Pragi czy Wiednia, ewentualnie Budapesztu, wydaje się zbyt mało rozwinięta. W Pradze funkcjonują bowiem 3 linie metra (długość łączna 65,2 km, 61 stacji), w Wiedniu 5 linii (długość 83,2 km, 109 stacji), a Budapeszcie 4 linie (długość 38,3 km, 52 stacje). W Warszawie długość sieci metra wynosi 28,2 km, a liczba stacji 28.
Concept of the 3rd line of metro Warsaw, which is subject of the article, has nature of the initial analysis. Firstly, current underground network in Warsaw, which is currently developed (2nd line – West and East section), in comparison to other European metropolises (under 2 million habitants) – for example Prague, Vienna or Buda-pest, seems to be too little developed. Prague has 3 underground lines (total length 65,2 km, 61 stations), in Vienna 5 lines (length 83,2 km, 109 stations), Budapest 4 lines (length 38,3 km, 52 sta-tions). In Warsaw length is equal 28,2 km and 28 stations. What is more concept of 1st line of Warsaw metro has been created in 70’s and included that social and economical necessities.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie aktualnych przekształceń transportowych miast, które służą poprawie jakości życia ich mieszkańców. Wynikają one z różnorodnych uwarunkowań, które stanowią tło dla tych przekształceń. Znaczna część tych uwarunkowań jest destruktywna, w tym zwłaszcza: wzrost liczby samochodów osobowych na świecie, duża emisja zanieczyszczeń z ruchu samochodów osobowych oraz brak spadku wielkości tej emisji mimo wzrastającej liczby samochodów niskoemisyjnych i problem kongestii. Jednak część uwarunkowań posiada charakter konstruktywny, w tym zwłaszcza: dostrzeganie przez władze, że jakość życia w mieście jest bardzo istotna, zmiany w myśleniu o transporcie w mieście – zwłaszcza dwie przełomowe – książka Jane Jacobs „Śmierć i życie wielkich miast Ameryki” oraz Raport Buchanana, a także zmniejszanie się liczby samochodów osobowych w wielkich miastach krajów rozwiniętych. Na takim tle przedstawiono przekształcenia transportowe miast służące poprawie jakości życia w zakresie: planowania ulic, płynności ruchu, uspokojenia oraz ograniczenia ruchu samochodów, komunikacji rowerowej, komunikacji urządzeniami transportu osobistego, a także rangi, integracji, dostępności i atrakcyjności komunikacji publicznej.
The aim of the article is to present current transformations of the city transport that serve to improve the quality of their residents’ lives. They result from various determinants that form the background for these transformations. A substantial number of these conditions is destructive, in particular: an increase in the number of passenger cars in the world, significant pollution from passenger car traffic and no decrease in this emission despite a growing number of low-emission cars and problems with congestion. However, some of these determinants are constructive, particularly: noting by the authorities that the quality of life in the city is essential, changes in thinking about transport in the city – especially two ground-breaking publications – Jane Jacobs’s book The Death and Life of Great American Cities and Buchanan’s report, as well as a decrease in the number of passenger cars in large cities of developed countries. In this context, urban transport transformations aiming to improve the quality of life are presented in terms of: street planning, traffic flow, slowing down and reducing car traffic, bicycle transportation, Personal Mobility Devices transportation, as well as the rank, integration, accessibility and attractiveness of public transport.

Not only the opinions of experts point to the increasing number of cars in central areas of cities, but this fact is also perceived by the city residents themselves. They experience it every day when they move around the city. Congestion at the junctions and sometimes a total collapse of traffic cause substantial problems for urban public transport vehicles. It is not uncommon for an urban public transport vehicle to stand in a slowly moving queue of vehicles, transporting mostly two or three passengers. An urban public vehicle can transport several times more passengers and in this fact it is much more favourable for the city area. Delays of urban public transport vehicles deteriorate the quality of public transport, which is very important for the passengers. The article deals with the different ways of public transport priority which could be broadly categorised asphysical measures, traffic signal priorities, and integrated measures. These measures are used according to the need and the feasibility to provide them and can include with-flow lanes, contraflow bus lanes, bus only streets, priority at traffic signals and integrated measures such as queue-relocation and virtual bus lanes.

Okresowo pojawiają się na łamach prasy fachowej i ogólnej rozważania na temat celowości budowy metra we Wrocławiu. Ostatnio zaprezentowane przez Biuro Rozwoju Wrocławia opracowanie zawiera koncepcję budowy systemu mierzącego 36 kilometrów tras i liczącego 34 stacje. W artykule przedstawiono wcześniejsze koncepcje systemu szybkiej kolei miejskiej. Zamieszczono też rozważania na temat obecnie obowiązującej koncepcji. Opisano i omówiono wybrane założenia przyjęte podczas formułowania tego dokumentu oraz wynikające z nich rozwiązania, zagrożenia i wnioski. Przytoczono podstawowe zasady dotyczące współistnienia transportu zbiorowego i indywidualnego oraz obliczania sumarycznego czasu podróży z uwzględnieniem różnic pomiędzy liniami tramwajowymi czy autobusowymi a trasami metra. Następnie przedstawiono wybrane cechy alternatywnych w stosunku do podziemnego metra systemów szybkiego transportu miejskiego. Szczegółowo opisano cechy mało znanego, a posiadającego istotne zalety systemu Aerobus, będącego połączeniem wybranych cech kolei linowej i podwieszonej ze specyficzną konstrukcją drogi szynowej. Stwierdzono jego przydatność w obsłudze dużych ośrodków miejskich, których warunki finansowe lub wielkość strumieni pasażerskich nie pozwalają na rychłą budowę metra. Przedstawiono koncepcję budowy pierwszej linii w tym systemie we Wrocławiu. Wyznaczono przebieg trasy z rozmieszczeniem stacji, uzasadniając go obsługą wielkich generatorów ruchu i ważnych węzłów przesiadkowych. Za pomocą stosownych obliczeń oszacowano przewidywane czasy jazdy, podkreślając ich konkurencyjność w stosunku do istniejących środków transportu. Całość podsumowano krótkimi rozważaniami ekonomicznymi. Na zakończenie zamieszczono ogólne wnioski.
In both scientific and daily press from time to time articles concerning the feasibility of construction of underground metropolitan railway in Wrocław are appeared. Recently Biuro Rozwoju Wrocławia (Bureau for Development of Wroclaw) has prepared the document presenting a concept of an underground system with 36 km total line length and 34 stations. This paper refers to the implementation of the Aerobus system - an alternative to the mentioned above. General considerations about different urban mass transit system are included, as well as assumptions concerning the needs and possibilities of the eventual new transport line. Both low costs of installation and moderate transport capacity, which better suits the city this size, were emphasized. A proposal of an east – west route has been included. Justification for such a choice has been shown, showing the occurring connections between large traffic generators and important interchanges. Basic calculations concerning travel speed and time have also been performed. The paper ends with a short summary and conclusions.

The issues discussed in this article concern the basic assumptions for the sustainable development of public transport in cities. We discussed the need and direction of changes that occur in public transport that were referred to both users and transport organizers in cities. To this end, we characterized the activities which encourage urban residents to use forms of urban transport and the limitations of commuting via individual transport. The purpose of this article was to determine the main directions and areas of development of public transport in Szczecin. In addition, we also presented the solutions applied in the city transport system aimed at making it sustainable. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the impact of selected solutions on residents’ transport behaviors. The survey research method was used to examine societal opinions and expectations regarding public transport. We also approximated the basic investments that have been implemented to make transport more sustainable and the activities for the development of electromobility. Future research directions on the sustainability of transport in the city, and especially on limiting vehicular traffic, were also discussed.

Dynamiczny rozwój aglomeracji miejskich stworzył potrzebę dostosowania wykorzystywanych systemów informatycznych do zwiększonego natężenia ruchu pasażerskiego. Coraz powszechniejsze zjawisko kongestii przyczyniło się do intensyfikacji działań na rzecz poprawy efektywności sterowania przepływami w aglomeracjach. Do tego celu zaczęto wykorzystywać coraz bardziej nowoczesne rozwiązania służące poprawie funkcjonowania komunikacji miejskiej. Celem artykułu jest ocena i przegląd aktualnych rozwiązań, które mogą zostać z powodzeniem zaimplementowane w systemach komunikacyjnych miast w Polsce. Publikacja ma na celu także określenie perspektyw rozwoju Inteligentnych Systemów Transportowych (ITS) w przyszłości, a także efektów wynikających z ich dalszego wykorzystywania.
The dynamic development of urban areas has created the need to adapt computer systems used to increased passenger traffic. Increasingly common phenomenon of congestion, contributed to intensify efforts to improve the efficiency of the control flows in agglomerations. For this purpose cities begin to use more and more modern-solving software to improve the functioning of public transport. The aim of the article is to assess and review of current solutions that can be successfully implemented in communication systems, cities in Poland. The publication is also intended to determine the prospects for the development of intelligent transport systems in the future as well as the effects resulting from their continued use.

W artykule zaprezentowana została sieć tramwajowa w Szczecinie jako istotny element systemu transportu zbiorowego miasta i aglomeracji. Gałąź ta, zgodnie z dokumentem "Zintegrowany plan rozwoju transportu publicznego w Szczecinie w latach 2007-2015", określona została jako podstawowy środek transportu zbiorowego obsługującego połączenia miejskie, a jej uzupełnienie stanowić ma: komunikacja autobusowa - na obszarze samego miasta, kolej - na obszarze podmiejskim. W pierwszej części artykułu autor określił zasady funkcjonowania systemu transportu zbiorowego w Szczecinie, wskazując podmioty od-powiedzialne za jego organizację, jak również za realizację przewozów. Przedstawione zostały również głównie parametry ilościowe sieci tramwajowej miasta, jak również wskazane zostały jej cechy charakterystyczne. W kolejnej części autor dokonał oceny stanu techniczno-eksploatacyjnego infrastruktury transportowej tej gałęzi, a także przedstawił listę realizowanych i planowanych inwestycji infrastrukturalnych i taborowych. Aktualność tematu wynika z dynamiki zmian zachodzących w obszarach miejskich oraz nasilającego się w nich zjawiska kongestii transportowej. Sprawnie zorganizowany miejski transport zbiorowy może stać się podstawowym sposobem na przemieszczanie się mieszkańców i użytkowników miasta i regionu, a tym samym pozytywnie wpłynąć na minimalizację kongestii, zanieczyszczenia środowiska oraz powstawanie tzw. kosztów społecznych transportu. Artykuł jest efektem udziału autora w projekcie rozwojowym realizowanym pod kierunkiem Czesławy Christowej w Akademii Morskiej w Szczecinie finansowanym przez Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju pt. "Badanie i modelowanie zintegrowanego gałęziowo systemu transportowego w regionie zachodniopomorskim ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Środkowoeuropejskiego Korytarza Transportowego Północ-Południe".
In the paper has been presented the current status of the tram network in Szczecin as an important part of the public transportation system in the city and the agglomeration of Szczecin has been presented. The analysis of performed and planned investments in the infrastructure and rolling stock has been also presented. A The author has evaluated the possibility of increasing the share of transport carried out by the trams and conditioned it to the spatial development of the network, in accordance with the directions of spatial development of Szczecin. The issue seems to be very attractive topical due to the dynamie changes taking place in the urban areas and the escalating effect of the transport congestion. The article is the result of author's participation in the research led by Czesława Christowa in the Maritime University of Szczecin, under a development project on "Research on and modeling of mode-integrated transport system in the Zachodniopomorski region with a focus on the Central European Transport Corridor North - South CETC Route 65" financed by the National Research and Development Centre.

This paper analyzes problems and solutions of urban freight transport in six cities of different sizes and economic profile in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The data were collected in commercial establishments and analyzed through descriptive statistics and using the method of successive intervals. The results obtained reflect the retailers' point of view and indicate that the problems and solutions are different in each city considered in this paper. The availability of unloading zones is the main problem in Betim, Belo Horizonte, Contagem and Itabira. The off-peak delivery is viewed as a solution in Divinópolis, Betim and Itabira. Therefore, with no possibility to determine a single remedy as a broad national solution to urban freight transport, it is instead necessary to investigate the realities of each city so that the policymakers could implement local solutions that reduce the externalities of urban freight transport.
W artykule przeanalizowano problemy miejskiego transportu towarowego i związane z tym rozwiązania stosowane w sześciu brazylijskich miastach różnej wielkości i o różnym profilu ekonomicznym, zlokalizowanych w stanie Minas Gerais. Dane do badań zbierano w placówkach handlowych i analizowano za pomocą statystyk opisowych oraz metodą kolejnych interwałów. Uzyskane wyniki odzwierciedlają punkt widzenia detalistów i wskazują, że problemy poszczególnych miast nie są jednakowe, podobnie jak potencjalne rozwiązania. Dostępność stref rozładunku jest głównym problemem w miastach Betim, Belo Horizonte, Contagem i Itabira. Natomiast dostawy poza godzinami szczytu są postrzegane jako rozwiązanie w Divinópolis, Betim i Itabira. Nie ma możliwości określenia jednego środka zaradczego jako szerokiego krajowego rozwiązania dla miejskiego transportu towarowego. Zamiast tego konieczne jest zbadanie realiów każdego miasta, aby decydenci mogli wdrożyć lokalne rozwiązania, które złagodzą efekty zewnętrzne miejskiego transportu towarowego.
