Opis:
This paper presents the use of infrared thermography in aviation. Each of the described applications has been proved experimentally and revealed the advantages and disadvantages of the thermography method. Thermography is a discipline of research that allows observation of many phenomena, e.g. simple temperature analysis, defectoscopic tests and actions of aerodynamic. Its use in aviation is multidirectional therefore; thermography is an attractive method for research. Thermal techniques seem simple; however require extensive knowledge of infrared radiation, the areas in which this technique is used, the influence of camera parameters on its capabilities and software knowledge applied depending on the purpose. This paper undertakes the verification of temperature analysis method, which is based on the tests of whole machine assembly and its parts during their operation - widely known as passive thermography. Another raised issue is defectoscopic study which aim is to detect structural defects by non-destructive testing (NDT) - active thermography. Several types of sandwich and composite materials were selected, and on the basis of the test results the limitations and possibilities of thermography in the field of active thermography were concluded. The last application considered in this study is the use of thermography for aerodynamic testing, i.e. verification transition point, laminar to turbulent layer on the aerodynamic profile.

Opis:
In the article the influence of selected factors occurring during thermal measurements on the uncertainty of thermovision temperature measurement is discussed. A situation in which the observed surface was close to the camera lens was measured (distance less than one meter). Based on the type B determination methodology described in the literature on the subject, a method of calculating the measurement extended uncertainty is proposed. A division of factors influencing the thermovision temperature measurement uncertainty into external factors and internal factors is also proposed. Factors associated with the conditions prevailing during the measurement, the geometry of the measurement system and the properties of the observed surface were considered external factors. Factors related to the calibration of the thermal imaging camera, the sensor matrix used and the properties of its measuring path were qualified as internal factors. The method of determining the value of the camera display at the highest and lowest value of a particular factor is discussed. The probability distribution for each of the external factors was determined. The measuring system constructed is presented. It is explained how the uncertainty shares and expanded uncertainty were determined in accordance with the method proposed.

Opis:
Testing of varistors using thermography was carried out in order to assess their protective properties against possible overvoltage phenomena in the form of high-level voltage surges. An advantage of the thermography technique is non-contact temperature measurement. It was proposed to assess the properties of varistors working in electronic devices as protective elements, on the basis of estimating temperature increments on varistor surfaces, registered by an infrared camera during surge resistance tests with standard voltage levels. To determine acceptable temperature increments on a tested varistor, preliminary testing was performed of P22Z1 (Littelfuse) and S07K14 (EPCOS) type varistors, working first at a constant load and presently during surge tests,. The thermographic test results were compared with measured varistor capacity values before and after tests. It was found that recording with thermography temperature increments greater than 6°C for both P22Z1 and S07K14 varistor types detects total or partial loss of varistor protective properties. The test results were confirmed by assessment of protective properties of varistors working in output circuits of low nominal voltage devices.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Fascia Manipulation® is one of the methods focusing on the deep fascia. The assumption is that fascial manipulation is carried out on precisely determined points – coordination centres (cc), and on a limited area so as the friction occurring during manipulation would cause a local rise in temperature due to the inflammatory reaction. Rise in temperature influences modification in consistency of elementary matter in the manipulated area, and by the same token causing a decrease in the negative effects of fascia densification which stems from accumulation of hyaluronic acid. The purpose of the research is to prove the thesis that fascial manipulation causes local rise in temperature due to inflammatory reaction. Materials and method. For the research, 25 individuals with densification in lower limb area were qualified. They were exposed to a single, 3-minute facial manipulation®. By means of a thermal-imaging camera, changes in the temperature of the body in the examined area were evaluated. The body’s temperature evaluation was carried out 8 times: before the treatment, 5 minutes after the treatment, and, next, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48 hours after the treatment. Results. The average surface temperature of the treated area before mobilization was 33.4°C. A statistically relevant increase in temperature was already observed 5 minutes after the treatment (increase of 0.5°C; p<0.001). However, the highest temperature was observed 24 hours after mobilization (increase of 2.4 °C). The difference between the first and 7 other measurements was statistically relevant (p<0.001). Conclusion. The statistically relevant increase in temperature under the influence of fascial manipulation® in the treatment area can confirm the occurrence of inflammatory reaction.

Authors are proposing use of stereoscopic observation of thermograms in order to simplify their interpretation. Analysis of the quality of the stereoscopic model has been made on the images of industrial and habitable buildings. It has been found that model is clearly visible when it is seen in a low scale. Enlargement of the image resulted in decreasing accuracy of observations. Accuracy of spatial placement of objects' elements recorded on the stereograph. In order to acquire geometri-cally accurate information about the object it is necessary to make a photographical stereopair, but thermographical stereograph is very useful in the interpretation of temperature distribution.

We discuss limitations of the known methods of IR imaging in diagnostics of breast cancer. In conclusion we show that the known methods, based on simple observation of external temperature distribution, are not fully effective. Even advanced pattern recognition could not help in analysis of static images. May active dynamic thermography, known in non-destructive testing of materials, be of any help in breast cancer diagnostics? Analysis of thermal transients forced by external thermal excitation shows, even on simple models, that one may expect a visible improvement in resolution after such excitation. Applied models allow analysis of both static and active thermograms. Basing on the models one may recognise elements of the internal structure of a breast not visible in static pictures. This method, new in clinical practice, seems to be promising, but requires further studies.

Noise removal in IR (Infra Red) images is very popular in recent years, however the same approach is utilized as for vision images, with no or minor changes. In this work we wanted to show the results of noise removal for selected filters. We focused on investigation of some filters normally used for image processing and their influence to IR image quality. In IR imaging the choice of filter depends mainly on the purpose of the processing, e.g. detection of small objects in complex images, edge and contour detection or removal of non-uniformity of the detector array. The performance of the selected noise reduction filters was evaluated using PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) quality measure, greater value of the PSNR and lower value of the MAE indicate better noise reduction. The results are shown only for few images from our database which contain over 2000 of IR images.

With the growing intensity of civil usage of the UAV, one of the most important problems is safety. It consists of operational safe use of the UAV in the common air area and reliability of the aerial vehicle construction. Each flying object is subjected to external loads, which influence on it in flight and on the ground. The external loads are mainly caused by aerodynamic, weight and inertia influence, ground reaction force and the power unit [1]. That is why during service, UAV structures are prone to many mechanical and environmental conditions that can damage to composite structures in the form of delamination, fiber breakage, and matrix cracking. Monitoring the level and type of damage to a composite structure is vital to determining the component’s structural integrity and preventing the failure of the structure during flight [2]. Non-destructive testing which has been used so far to identify defects in the aircraft structure made from metallic materials has a quite limited application in the case of composite structures. With the growing use of composites in the aviation industry, a necessity appears to work out a method allowing identification of technological defects and damages appeared in the process of the UAV’s operation. The answer to the appearing demand could be, for instance, the active thermography technique used for the thin wall test of the skin elements of the UAV. The obtained research results bring closer the problem of selection of the quick, well-fitted non-destructive testing method depending on the kind of the diagnosed construction.

This paper presents results of flow boiling heat transfer in two parallel asymmetrically heated vertical minichannels. The heating element for Fluorinert FC-72 flowing in the minichannels was a thin foil with an enhanced surface on the side in contact with the fluid. The channels were observed from both sides through glass panes. Two of the panes allowed us to observe the two phase flow patterns on the enhanced surface of the foil, while the other two panes were used for simultaneous measurement of temperature on the smooth side of the foil. The temperature was measured by applying two contactless methods. One was liquid crystal thermography (LCT), which required treating the foil surface with thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs), and the other was infrared thermography (IRT), which required coating the foil surface with black paint. Calculations were performed on the basis ofa one-dimensional model to determine the heat transfer coefficient at the foil-fluid interface from the Robin boundary condition. The experimental results were graphically represented as the foil temperature and the heat transfer coefficient against the distance from the minichannel inlet and as LCT and IRT images obtained for saturated boiling.

Opis:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that manifests itself by joint inflammation, swelling, pain, tenderness and may involve extra-articular organs in severe cases. Joint inflammatory lesions are associated with higher temperature due to increased vascularity in the area of inflamed tissues. This papers aimed to identify heat patterns from ROIs to interpret the presence of inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis patients. The thermovisual image sequences were collected from 65 patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Infrared images were generated by a thermal scanning camera (FLIR E60bx Systems Inc., USA). Separate recordings of left and right foot temperature changes were performed for 3 minute periods. The temperature measurement was performed at the moment right after cold water immersion (post-cooling temperature) and at the moment after thermal recovery (post-recovery temperature). The recording of 3-minute foot thermal recovery was used for analysis. Automatically identified ROI corresponds to the area of the soft tissues covering cuboid and navicular bone.

Uzmysławiają, że zignorowanie nawet najmniejszych nieprawidłowości może skutkować rozległą awarią systemu energetycznego. Natomiast prawidłowa weryfikacja termogramów umożliwia diagnostykę sytemu bez konieczności pozbawiania dopływu energii elektrycznej do odbiorców przemysłowych i indywidualnych.
The use of a thermal imaging cameras to analyze the technical condition of the switchgear and distribution of the energy system has a direct impact on the continuity of electricity supply. Specific environmental conditions relate directly to how to interpret the results. The presented examples of research of the thermal imaging, illustrate the mechanisms of action used in professional practice. They make clear that ignoring even the smallest irregularities may result in the failure of an extensive energy systems. Whereas the correct verification of the thermal image allows diagnostics of the system without depriving voltage transmission facilities and thus without disconnecting customers.

Opis:
The paper presents a proposal of using additional statistical parameters such as: standard deviation, variance, maximum and minimum increases of the observed value that were determined during measurements of temperature fields created on the surface of the tested electrochemical capacitor. The measurements were carried out using thermographic methods in order to support assessment of the condition of electrochemical capacitor under classic durability tests based on methods of determination of capacity and equivalent series resistance. The possibility of using some statistical parameters in assessment of the electrochemical capacitor quality was illustrated. The applied measurement methodology and the results of research associated with the classic methods of supercapacitors’ assessment are presented. The obtained results indicate that the variability of some statistical parameters of temperature fields can be directly related to changing the values of standard parameters describing electrochemical capacitor, which are capacitance and equivalent series resistance.

Municipal Solid Waste

Opis:
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is the mixture of many waste types, including organic waste (garden and park waste, food and kitchen waste, paper and cardboard etc.). Such waste creates a living environment for various microorganism species, many of which are known as pathogenic. The presence of microorganisms in favorable conditions (pH, organic matter content, carbon content, moisture, appropriate granulation) leads to decomposing of organic matter, which is accompanied by an increase in temperature. Microorganisms in waste pose a serious risk for staff operating at waste treatment plants. Moreover, heat released by their activity may cause a fire in waste storage facilities. Therefore, it is necessary to search for methods of waste stabilization and hygienization. The most commonly applied technology for waste stabilization is its processing in Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plants. Such treatment is capital – and timeconsuming, however. Waste liming can become an alternative method for stabilization and hygienization of waste. Lime addition is one of the oldest method known by humans for hygienization of certain waste materials, such as animal waste. Currently, liming is applied in sewage sludge treatment as one of the initial operations and is necessary for further sludge management processes. The aim of the research was to valuate temperature changes during mixed MSW hygienization process with CaO addition in the amount of several percent by using a thermographic camera. The reaction of CaO with waste is short and lasts no longer than 20 minutes. The maximal temperatures were reached after 65-124 seconds from the time of CaO addition. The most dynamic increase in temperature were observed up to approx. 120th second of the process, with the rate dependent on the initial moisture of the material. The observed pH values indicate that the maximal dose of CaO additive should not exceed 3%. Such a dose is sufficient for waste to reach pH 12, which, according to literature, guarantees the deactivation of microorganisms.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of training on body surface temperature over the joints in racehorses, measured by infrared thermography. The study involved monitoring of 14 Thoroughbred racehorses in 6 imaging sessions over a period of 3 months. Temperature measurements of the forelimb and hindlimb joints were made before and just after training. Joint temperature of limbs increased significantly after training. Environmental temperature had a statistically significant influence on surface temperature over the joints. The lowest surface temperatures were recorded over the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joint and the highest temperatures in the shoulder, elbow, hip and stifle joint. The metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints warmed the least during training, but were influenced the most by differences in environmental temperature. The surface temperature difference before and after training is an important indicator of the thermoregulatory response to exercise in racing horses. Understanding surface temperature changes in response to regular training is necessary for future studies on diagnosing injuries of joints.
