Opis:
The author focuses on Hans Kohn (1891–1971) who is generally regarded as the founding father of modern Anglophone academic research on nationalism. He was first to adopt a more neutral stance toward nationalism, one that made sustained attempt at dispassionate analysis of the phenomenon in order to define, classify and explain it. However, not only did he bring in a innovative and novel perspective to the subject by producing broad comparative studies but he was responsible for introducing one of the basic and long-lasting themes to the study of nationalism, namely a strongly moralistic distinction between a good nationalism, which he associated with the West, and a bad nationalism allegedly typical for the non-Western world. The paper discusses three questions: first, how did Kohn conceptualize the differences between the two types of nationalism? Second, how and why did he come to his conclusions and, finally, if it can be argued as many authors claim, that his discrimination between the two types of nationalism are valid and useful?

This article is an outline of Hungarian Turanism, Central European ideological phenomenon. The ideology was relatively important in Hungary during the first half of the 20th century and is currently undergoing a revival in the country. Turanism is a very important part of the ideology promoted by the Jobbik party (Movement for a Better Hungary). The term “Turanism” is derived from Turán, a word most likely of Old-Persian origin, once used to describe the lands of Central Asia inhabited by nomadic tribes. According to the ideology of Turanism, Hungarians are related to Altaic peoples, such as Turks, Azeris, Tatars, Kazakhs, Mongols, and even Tibetans and Japanese. Many Hungarian researchers and explorers travelled to Central Asia in order to find peoples related to Hungarians. It is noteworthy to point out that modern Hungarian Turanism, particularly as it is represented by Jobbik, displays strong anti-Western attitudes. Jobbik is very critical of the international policy of the European Union and the United States, and considers Hungary to be a victim of the West. What is more, Jobbik strongly criticises globalism, liberalism and anti-traditionalism, which it considers to be features of modern Western societies. Because of this, Jobbik’s “Eastern Turn” appears to be a turn away from the West.

Opis:
At the turn of the 20th century, Macedonia was a region still controlled by the waning Ottoman Empire, though intensely coveted by the neighbouring Balkan states, which deployed national propaganda movements in Macedonia, in preparation for future territorial annexations. It is this author’s contention that the “Macedonian question” thus engendered gives rise to several overlapping triadic configurations of interlocking, interacting and mutually monitoring nationalisms, as per the analytical model put forth by Rogers Brubaker. Working on this premise, and after adjusting Brubaker’s model to account for the specific relational settings of the Macedonian question, this author proceeds to draft a case study of a specific triadic configuration, among several operating in fin-de-siècle Macedonia: namely, the one arisen out of the mutual monitoring and interaction of a Romanian nationalizing nationalism, a Greek nationalizing nationalism, and two Aromanian (or Vlach) minority nationalisms.

Opis:
This article investigates the source and evolution of nationalism in Ethiopia. Nationalism is defined on the bases of certain criteria, such as language culture and shared values within a specific ethnic group.Ethiopia is the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country. There are more than 80 different ethnic groups and as many languages. The relations between these ethnic groups had never been smooth. The development of nationalism and violence goes back to the very historical foundation of the Ethiopian state, which is based on the forced incorporation of independent Southern nations. The centralized Ethiopian State in favor of a single ethnic group mainly (Amhara) imposed domination on other ethnic groups. On the background of this history, the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), Tigraj Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF), Eritrean Peoples Democratic Liberation Front (EPDLF) among others, opened an armed resistance against the State. After along destructive fight, Eritrea became an independent country. Many other ethnic groups similarly, based on ethnic nationalism formed their own liberation fronts as the ultimate goal of independence, are still fighting. The fast growing process of ethnic nationalism in Ethiopia may cause the disintegration of the country, unless the genuine and equal participation of all ethnic groups in the political cultural and economic life of the country is guaranteed by law.

Jan Ludwik Popławski (1854-1908) was one of the fathers of the Polish National Democratic ideology in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was particularly fascinated with matters pertaining to the common people, and especially Polish peasantry. He considered them to be the genuine Poles, free of foreign influences. It is worth pointing out that that he also served as an inspiration to Roman Dmowski, the founder of the National Democracy movement and one of the leaders whose efforts secured Polish independence. According to Popławski, the Polish gentry were servile to the powers occupying Poland. He therefore hoped that the common people would play a greater role in the political life of the nation.

The USA as a multinational country of immigrants is nevertheless a fertile ground for competing nationalist ideologies and the consequently competing myth-building that surrounds the construction of national identity. The myth of the 1776 Declaration of Independence as an important founding document for domestic politics in the United States continues to spread through popular culture and academic textbooks. The claim of the Jefferson’s Declaration as an aspirational founding document helped establish a myth supporting creedal nationalism, but obscures the arc of the ideological debate over national identity.

The discussion about nation and ideas connected with it has a long tradition, tremendously multithreaded and varied in interpretations. We are practically unable of counting all attempts to create the definition of a nation. They are all more or less precise, for understandable reasons reflects their author's social and cultural experiences, reaching for specific metaphors, and sometimes being a form of intellectual provocation. A conception of a nation is strongly tied to the category of minority, especially the ethnic minority. Both those definitions are often used in turns. A very interesting issue is analyzing the connections between nationalism and religion.

Since the very beginning mutual relations between Islam and the Arabs were ambiguous. Some of the inherent Arab values were reinforced by Islam, others were questioned. Over the ages their reciprocal influences had the impact on all of the aspects of the Arab in general, and the Maghrebian in particular, reality. Political and social theories and their practical implementation, Arab nationalism and panislamism, were shaped accordingly. Taking into account all the variety of different factors influencing Arab nationalism (ethnicity and local identities, colonial history, state identities, etc.) the article focuses on the relations between Arab nationalism and Islam in the Maghreb states. At the beginning it tries to determine the definition of the Arabs. Afterwards, it analysis the relations between the Arab and the Muslim identities. Finally, to establish the reinforcing or the weakening impact of Islam on the Arab nationalism in practice, the writer goes through the different stages of the Arab and Maghreb history, showing how the Pan-Arabic and Pan-Islamic theories were getting and losing their support, cooperating and competing with each other, proving how bad it was both, for the religion and for the politics, that Islam became so engaged in the policy making processes. The final idea is that, since many decades these are the state identities, state nationalism for example, which become more and more influential source of reference for all kinds of political and social movements, including Arab nationalism.

The definition of a nation, which could be suitable for all groups, which find themselves as a nation and in the same time are perceived as a nation and are considered a nation by other groups does not exist and probably never will. In European politics in XX century it can be observed that after 1945-1989 has come a period of much more nationalistic character. First of all, "civil society develops nowadays as a national country or remains in more or less close connections with aspirations to creating such country". Secondly, common values that exist in such society are mainly values that enter into the composition of national culture.

This article is a report form a study conducted among the students of two universities in Cracow. The objective of the research was to examine whether the students observe elements defined by M. Billing as "banal nationalism" in their everyday space. The author of this paper builds upon a brief analysis of space as an object of interest for sociologists and anthropologists (G. Simmel, E. T. Hall, Yi-Fu Tuan, T. Edensor, M. Augé), showing a dual continuum of the social experience of space, extending from home to not-place. An analysis of answers collected during the research allows to affirm that around 30% of the 100-person group under study distinguishes elements of what is national in their everyday space. Among the subsets of this space mentioned by the respondents, attire was brought up most frequently; next came: dishes and customs related to food consumption, means of transport, youth music, architecture and nature.

A National “Struggle for Survival”? – The Badeni Crisis of 1897 in Cisleithania’s German-language PressThis article observes the role of Cisleithania’s (i.e. the Austrian “half” of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy) Germanlanguage press in the so-called Badeni Crisis of 1897 which was triggered by the issuance of two language ordinances designed to make Czech, together with German, an equally valid language in the inner administration of the Crownlands of Bohemia and Moravia. By comparing the reporting style of two newspapers from different regions – the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse and the Bohemian newspaper Prager Tagblatt – this essay explores how interpretations of this serious political crisis differed in the periphery and the centre of the Habsburg empire. The author shows that, even though the Badeni Crisis directly affected mainly German-speaking Bohemians, the reporting style of the Prager Tagblatt was less sensationalist and its choice of words less nationalistic and militaristic than the coverage of the same events by its Viennese counterpart, the Neue Freie Presse. In a second step, reasons for this surprising discrepancy are traced. Narodowa „walka o przetrwanie”?

This essay uses five new Polish-language books popularising the ‘people’s’ history perspective as a jumping-off point to discuss distortions in the historical imagination. At the centre is the issue of the peasantry. In some national mythologies, the peasants or the ‘people’ serve as the heart of the nation. In the Polish case, this has been the role of the nobility or szlachta and as a result the peasants are often forgotten or skipped over in popular historical narratives. These new books represent a sea change in historical imagination, not for the academy, but for the broader public.

The article considers the role of language in formation of citizen’s identity in the post-Soviet countries. It deals with possibilities of identityʼs determination, basing on the concepts of nationalism and ethnicity on the example of Kazakhstan. The author states that nationalism is not connected directly with language, but for ethnicity it is one of the basic concepts. Language identity reveals not only from the status characteristics in the context of discourse within post-Soviet countries, but also as a way of influence on social consciousness. Finally, the paper discusses the way of how the meta-language shapes the thinking stereotype about identity.

Opis:
There are three traditional foundation or pillars of Ukrainian national identity; language, religion and social memory but religion is the most important. It is connected in special way with the Orthodox Church and its role to the preservation and reconstruction that identity. Interviews conducted among Orthodox Church priests working in the decanates of Olsztyn, Elbląg and Węgorzewo and other researches make clear that religion is the real value of native ethnic culture and center of Ukrainian national consciousness. Social and cultural role of Orthodox parish churches in the Ukrainian community refers also to the situation before 1947 i.e. deportation Ukrainians on Wamia and Mazury. History and memory of the polish-ukrainian borderland show that among principles of coexistence of Poles and Ukrainians religion and church were the most important. Now significance of religion in processes of identification is also recognized. It seems that future existence of Ukrainian diaspora in Warmia and Mazury depends on religion. It means that the range of the assimilation processes will depend not only on rate of conversional and mixed marriage but also on different forms of secularization. Religious institutions are connected with political; Ukrainian Orthodox Church which gained full political and cultural rights after 1989 increased his social and cultural activity to become the most important institution of presentation of ethnic group interests.

Th is study explores the role of media in securing the electorate success of Ataka, Bul- garia’s ultra-right-wing party, as well as their contribution to the rise of nationalistic tendencies among the Bulgarian electorate. To accomplish this, the study sets two goals: fi rst, to explore the political and socio-cultural environment which has allowed for the growth of ultra-nationalist rhetoric in Bulgaria, and second, to examine how Ataka’s media publicity machine, with a specifi c focus on their new media tactics, have contributed to securing popular support for the virtually unfettered expression of ultra-nationalistic ideas. By conducting a critical analysis of Ataka’s use of electronic media, includ- ing websites, online forums, and other social networking tools, the study analyzes the importance of electronic media to a right wing party such as Ataka, that catapulted it from complete obscurity into a political force of national importance.

Traditional primordial concepts of nationalism are deep regressive. In this paper, I discuss a few contradictions in the relationship between tradition, nationalism and music. An excellent example illustrating specific nature of these contradictions is Dragačevski sabor trubača (Guča Trumpet Festival) in Guča, Serbia and particular music genre – brass music. In my opinion there are three distinctive discourses/narrations about history and meaning this festival and specific kind of music: dominating Serbian discourse, ‘weak’ Gypsy discourse, and researcher’s discourse. Circassian National Movement: Emigration, Diaspora, TransnationalismThe main purpose of this article is to give an account of historical development of Circassian nationalism. Author proposes a modernist and ethno-symbilist perspective in researching national idea of Caucasian ethnic group devided in stalinist USSR as a result of national engeenering, as well as by nineteenth century conquest of Northern Caucasus. The category of 'trans-nationalism' is based on Arjun Appadurai's understending of development of various social and cultural identities in globalising world. The case of Circassians living in North Caucasus and diaspora is viewed in this perspective. Thus, article is a historical and anthropological scope of Circassian nationalism in past two centuries. Czerkieski ruch narodowy: emigracja – diaspora – transnacjonalizmGłównym celem artykułu jest przybliżenie historycznego rozwoju nacjonalizmu czerkieskiego. W badaniach nad tożsamością pochodzącej z Kaukazu Północnego grupy etnicznej  autor proponuje perspektywę modernistyczną i etnosymboliczną.

This article analyses Claude McKay’s 1929 novel Banjo focusing on its anti-essentialist approach to black identity. Such prevalent anti-essentialism differs from the racial pride politics of the Harlem Renaissance, the literary movement with which McKay is usually associated. The rhizomatic poetics of this work will be explained through the fluid character which Glissant and other later Caribbean regionalist critics ascribe to the Caribbean text. This approach favours a hemispheric perception of the Americas which aligns with McKay’s ideas on black identity. Thus, it will be concluded that the prevalence of the American influence in Banjo despite its European setting reflects Quijano and Wallerstein’s model of Americanity for explaining the modern world order which saw its dawn in the Caribbean with the arrival of the Europeans.

Hybrid identities in the era of ethno-nationalism: The case of the krajowcy in LithuaniaThis article deals with the identification of the so-called krajowcy – a relatively small group of Polish-speaking activists in Lithuania and Belarus in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century who promoted an idea of the re-establishement of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This article claims that the krajowcy democrats (Michał Römer, Tadeusz Wróblewski, Konstancja Skirmuntt and others) were not nationally indifferent. On the contrary, they promoted a clearly formulated national identity ideology, different to the dominant (ethno-linguistic) one. First of all, the krajowcy were nationalists in a civic sense: they were Lithuanians, citizens of Lithuania within its historical boundaries. In addition, some of them, for example Wróblewski, suggested strengthening ethno-linguistic nationalism as well, otherwise his national personal autonomy concept would simply not have worked. Others, such as Konstancja Skirmuntt, Juozapas Albinas Herbačiauskas and Michał Römer, expressed a hybrid identification with several national cultures, and sometimes their self-identification was even reminiscent of identity ideologies that had dominated in earlier historical periods.

Based on empirical research conducted in Hungary and Poland in 2016–2017, as well as on analysis of social media, blogs and newspaper articles, this article discusses Hungarian and Polish attitudes towards Muslims and Islam. Against a historical background, we analyse how the Hungarian and Polish governments responded to the large-scale influx of Muslim refugees during the 2015 ‘migration crisis’. The anti-immigrant narratives, fueled by both governments and the right-wing press, resulted in something akin to Islamophobia without Muslims. Instead of portraying the people arriving at the southern border of Europe as refugees seeking safety, they described the migration process in terms such as ‘raid’, ‘conquest’ and ‘penetration’. These narratives often implied that Muslims will combat Europe not only with terrorism but with the uteruses of their women, who will bear enough children to outnumber native Poles and Hungarians. The paper ends with a discussion of positive attempts to improve attitudes towards refugees in Poland and Hungary.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: We are looking for a characterization of the processes of reconciliation lived in contemporary Europe in order to try to establish whether there is a historical pattern in those lived in the continent in the last two centuries, especially in the last one. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In order to do so, we resort to identifying the main causes of the violent confrontations experienced in Europe at this time. We follow a historical method: chronological order of events and establishment of causal relationships that allow the construction of a narrative about the dynamics of confrontation and reconciliation. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Inevitably we must be reductive in the selection of facts. The period of the two world wars serves as a dividing line between a time of confrontation and a time of reconciliation lived after the Second World War. We have chosen five processes since 1945 because they seem to us to be particularly significant. We also present some opposing examples of the emergence or survival of clashes. RESEARCH RESULTS: The first two are international: the reconciliations between France and Germany, and between Germany and Poland. The next two were lived within the same state: Spain with its transition to democracy and the United Kingdom to overcome the conflict in Northern Ireland. Finally, we deal with the most extensive reconciliation process in Europe: the one that took place after the fall of socialism, which brought together the two Europes separated until then by the Iron Curtain. The following are some examples to the contrary: cases in which there has been no reconciliation or in which new confrontations have arisen. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: We end with a joint evaluation of the findings in the cases described that point to the cultural foundation, especially in relation to Christian roots, which is detected in the great processes of reconciliation described.

The article deals with the relation between films and the concept of the national identity. These issues are discussed on the example of Serbian cinema in the 1990s. Using Anthony Smith’s approach to the visual representation of national identity, the ways in which films in Serbia construct national identity is discussed. After that, several films are analyzed that critically question the concept of nationalism. This analysis demonstrates how ideology, in this particular case, nationalistic ideology, at the semantic level can be related to films, one of the most influential segments of popular culture.

The political situation in Catalonia during the last months is changing almost daily. Catalan nationalist movements consistently continue their efforts to create an independent state. As a result, every vote – an unofficial plebiscite, local elections or elections to the Catalan parliament – is treated like a referendum on the matter of independence. The Catalan actions that are ever more faster and further-reaching meet with a growing opposition of the central government, threatening the Catalan authorities with a number of sanctions in case of taking further, concrete steps to break away from Spain. Although, from the outside, the Catalan independence parties seem to be a monolith, the situation on the regional political scene is much more complex. During the past several months, the balance of power of political parties in Catalonia was completely changed. Ruling for almost thirty years, Convergencia i Unió divided and the results of the election of 27 September forced Prime Minister Artur Mas (of the centre-right CiU) and the leaders of the new pro-independence coalition Junts pel Si to seek an ally in the far-left Popular Unity Candidacy. Therefore, this is a time of difficult choices for Catalonia, not only in relation to the issue of independence, but also when it comes to alliances on the national political scene. In this article, I will try to analyze the curent political scene in Catalonia and its impact on the independence aspirations of the Autonomous Community. I will examine the current balance of power of political parties and the changes that have occurred in 2015. I will look at the programmes of the leading – in recent years as well as currently – Catalan political factions in terms of their outlook on the issue of independence. Finally, I will consider in what way the complex situation on the Catalan political scene may become a determinant of the effectiveness of the demands for independence made by the authorities of Catalonia.

A discussion of various definitions of patriotism and the characteristics of the chosen approaches is included in the article. The presented approaches and the classifications of patriotism form the basis for a choice of the concept of patriotism, which on the hundredth anniversary of Polish independence seems to be a reasonable proposal for patriotic education. It has been called ethic-community based patriotism. It requires an effort for building moral power and a law abiding attitude in the community. A patriotic attitude consists of engagement, responsibility, honesty in inner and external relationships, favour, solidarity, respect for others and critic loyalty. For a patriotism understood in such a way, important are the values leading to the elimination of various forms of injustice like discrimination, violence and oppression, as well as the promotion of the common good of one’s own society and all humankind.

Most theories of nationalism labelled as ‘modernist’ tend to overlook the fact that the phenomenon to which they vaguely refer as ‘Modernity’ is defined by a single, very precise and consistent socio-economic system, that of capitalism. However, this fact makes nationalism and capitalism, rather than nationalism and ‘Modernity’, practically congruent. From this perspective, the essential question that arises is whether the emergence of these two was a spontaneous but compatible and useful coincidence, or nationalism was capitalism’s deliberate invention? In the capitalist era, society has become merely a resource whose existence enables functioning of the market. Such a society must destroy all traditional communal ties on which the maintenance of traditional society was based, so that the principles of reciprocity and solidarity be replaced by the procedures of asymmetric economic exchange. Once the procedures of asymmetric economic exchange become the central principle of human relations, society stops functioning as a whole and becomes sharply divided into two parts – a well-organised and tightly-structured network of self-interested individuals permanently striving for perpetual economic gain and a shapeless mob of socially dislodged labour permanently striving for mere survival. The incessant widening of the gap between the two strata makes capitalism’s essential principle of endless accumulation of capital socially unsustainable. For, rapidly urbanised masses, forced into selling their labour below the minimal price, contain a permanently present insurrectionary potential that might threaten stability of the entire system. So, bridging that gap without actually changing the structure of society becomes the paramount task for the system trying to preserve its mechanism of incessant exploitation of labour and limitless accumulation of capital. Therefore, the system has to introduce a social glue that is tailored to conceal, but also to cement, the actual polarisation of society. At the same time, this glue is designed to compensate the uprooted masses for the loss of their authentic identities by replacing these with a single artificial one. This multi-purpose invention is an abstract concept of absolute social unity, named “the nation”, based on the assumption that those who are located on both sides of the gap, no matter whether they are on the exploiting or exploited side, automatically share the same equal rights, same common interests, and same identity.

Category of The Other and its instances are an obligatory element of the world’s visions constructed by social actors within many various discourses present in Polish modern social space. Discursive communities shape an attitude towards The Other that is compatible with worldview line of discourse to which they belong. The Other can be therefore perceived as The Second, coexisting beside The Yours. It can also be presented as The Stranger or even as The Enemy. This rule is valid in the nationalistic discourse where the strangeness is contrasted with hominess and it becomes one of the strategies of building the identity. It is also a strategy that places everything what is different not only beyond the discursive community’s boundaries but also beyond the national community.

W Europie obserwujemy zjawisko renesansu nacjonalizmu. Rzeczywiście partie i ugrupowania nacjonalistyczne w poszczególnych krajach europejskich odnalazły wiele łączących je problemów, pewne uniwersalne treści wspólne im wszystkim, których chcą bronić, bądź je propagować.
Today in Europe we can observe the renaissance of nationalism. In the countries of both Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe we can clearly see the growing importance of the party referring to the category of the nation and national interest. Some say about the third wave of nationalism. The first wave of nationalism is democratic (1789–1870), the second wave is undemocratic (1886–1945), the third wave of nationalism is the European or Pan-European nationalism. This is probably the shape of nationalist ideas of tomorrow. Nationalist parties in various European countries have found a lot of problems connecting them. Therefore they created transnational group opposing the phenomenon of migration, islamization and European integration of the federal type.

The present study focuses on historical and ideological-political sources of the nazi project „Neue Europa” and its implementation in East-Central Europe. The authors shows these sources can be found in the middle of 19th Century and the Nazis only radicalized the means of implementation by supplementing that project with the racist component. In the final section of this study are presented the consequences of the „Neue Europa” project for the peoples of East-Central Europe.

The author of this paper analyzes the state of research to date and evaluates the existing literature on the subject. The following two sections deal with challenges regarding source material and interpretive challenges in describing diverse areas of the life and scope of the Primate of the Millennium’s activities. The paper focuses on the period of Wyszyński’s service as a primate, as it seems that in-depth research on the earlier stages of Stefan Wyszyński’s life could be an arduous task to conduct.

Political radicalism as a threat to the reborn Republic of Poland. The interwar period in Poland was characterised by the occurrence of real threats to the internal security of the state, the source of which was radicalism and political extremism. It was both left-wing and right-wing radicalism. We should mention here communism supported by Bolshevik Russia, Ukrainian nationalism supported by unfavourable countries such as Germany or Czechoslovakia, and Polish right-wing radicals who sought to change the political system of the country but not to annihilate it. All these political trends may have contributed to the destabilization of the Second Republic, but reborn Poland managed to create an appropriate internal security system, which included the Political Police, and on the other hand, the Polish society, as the history of the Second Republic shows, was not seduced by the political extremes.

Since its inception the Icelandic film industry has used the strategy of combining telluric elements with national- istic narratives. In many films one may also find visual structures that can be linked with the ‘tourist gaze’ – the term as we know it from the texts of John Urry. Despite a focus on some unique qualities of Icelandic nature and its cultural heritage (that can be attractive to foreign viewers) the specificity of cinematic production processes on the island belong to the structure of local, national cinema. Moreover, the 1980s, considered as the time of the rebirth of the Icelandic film industry and its rapid modernization, are full of films containing conservative or leftist telluric topics which are difficult for foreign audiences to understand. A new, transnational quality of Icelandic film features began with the film debut of Friðrik Þór Friðriksson in 1987. His fusion of modernist and postmodernist plots has encouraged other filmmakers to start the process of re-interpretation of the classic narrative structures, and to render the ironic demystification of some nationalistic themes.

This article picks up on a tendency of recent criticism to look to Shakespeare for insights into contemporary politics, and extends it backwards to the period of German history known as the “Vormärz”―the period between 1815 and 1848. It establishes parallels between that period and the current debates about Brexit, and shows how equivalent issues are reflected in the accounts of King John given by three leading German critics of the “Vormärz” period―which also successively demonstrate the deleterious rise of German nationalism. These issues include: the weaknesses, mistakes and crimes of the powerful, and their effect both on the nation directly afflicted with them, and on others; the issue of national sovereignty and its relationship to the fellowship of nations; the struggle against arguably alien ways of thinking; the dividing line between necessary compromise and rank betrayal; the dilemma of choice; and the poisoned chalice of democratic freedom. And the parallels they establish between Shakespeare, the “Vormärz” and us are as instructive as they are unsettling.

The limiting of personal freedom in interwar Italy resulted directly from the fascist approach to the state-individual relationship. The idea of leaving the citizens the broadest individual freedom, and limiting state law activities to the minimum was completely alien to fascist ideologies. The goal of the article was to consider how the problem of freedom in a fascist state was treated by right-wing supporters of that ideology in Poland. For the analysis, I use, e.g. the journalism of W. Jabłonkowski (Amica Italia), R. Rybarski (articles published in Myśl Narodowa), A. Łaszowski (Analiza łez krokodylich), K. Zbyszewski (a column series Ryżową szczotką), A. Nowaczyński (Sempre avanti), J. Waldorff (Sztuka pod dyktaturą), and F. Goetel (Pod znakiem faszyzmu). As the interpretative context, I also used the poetry of A.M. Swinarski, and a play by Nowaczyński entitled Cezar i człowiek.

Policies are not only being expressed by symbols and rituals, but their transmission and the use are being shaped by symbolic meanings. They teach how to understand world, putting it in order and help to overcome feeling of the chaos. To a large extent a so-called political reality is being created by symbolic meanings, even if it is hard for us to be reconciled with it. With the help of the appropriate selected set of multi-sensual, dramatic measures the political ritual allows more or less to capture participants and shape social imagination according to intentions of his organizers. Reconstructing or confirming existing political order the official ceremony with its performative nature tries with similar power as the ritual to involve its participants, seeks to generate feeling and images preferred by the authority. 10 January 1920, in accordance with provisions of the Treaty of Versailles the Republic of Poland took back Pomerania (annexed by Kingdom of Prussia in 1772 during First Partition of Poland). According to this, the special celebration was organized on the Puck Bay one month later. An episode with throwing the platinum ring into waters of the Baltic, called Poland’s Wedding to the Sea became soon the most important event in the great national story about the return of Pomerania to the motherland. It established the paradigmatic pattern for another state celebrations, which confirmed the northern boundary of Poland symbolically and state’s territorial integrity. Events in 1945 and 2010 were the variants of Poland’s Wedding to the Sea settled in their own historical context. On the one hand these ceremonies served as performative instruments for national legitimization of the power, but on the other hand they were used by political elites for creating and playing their own, different vision of the state.

The starting point of Bulgaria in national mythologyThis paper examines the dynamics of ideas on the beginnings of Bulgaria, such as were developed by early nationalism in the 18th and 19th centuries. Surveys show that there were different theses which competed tacitly. It is immediately noticeable that the figure of the Founder was imposed with difficulty and relatively late – in fact not until the 20th century. Paisius of Hilendar and the other authors of early histories presented Bulgarians in the context of Biblical history, and thus the beginning of Bulgarian time was associated with Noah and his sons. This idea was not openly attacked by successive generations, but they alternatively associated Bulgarian time and Bulgaria with the medieval kingdom, and especially with the baptism and deeds of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Among pre-Christian rulers, Khan emerges as significant, presented as Law-Maker and great Warrior, but not as Founder. It is typical for the nationalism of any ideological (and not only ideological) structure to strive for extension – in this case to seek its starting point at an ever earlier date. This proces can also be observed in the structures of Bulgarian nationalism: in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries there was a clear focus on the time before the Founder Khan Asparukh (7th century), and scholars and journalists still take pleasure in finding older Bulgarian states. However, before the founding of the Principality of Bulgaria (1878), the opposite was true. (Some) representatives of the revolutionary movement in fact rejected the medieval period and preferred to focus on more recent periods, if not on their time itself and even on the immediate future. More or less unexpectedly, this idea was re-vitalised in the late 20th century with the catch-phrase “the most Bulgarian time” associated with the 1870s. Paisij Chilendarski i inni autorzy wczesnych historiografii umieszczają Bułgarów w kontekście historii biblijnej i w efekcie początek czasu bułgarskiego odsyła do synów Noego. W drugiej połowie XX wieku i na początku XXI wieku widać wyraźny zwrot ku czasom sprzed rządów założyciela chana Asparucha (VII w.), tj. kiedy powstawały inne bułgarskie organizmy państwowe (zob. Р. Natomiast przed wyzwoleniem (1878) i powstaniem Księstwa Bułgarii można zaobserwować tendencję przeciwną. XIX wieku.

According to the concept of the cultural nation formulated by J. G. Herder in the 18th the nationality of the person is determined by the language used. In the nineteenth century, there emerges a concept of a political nation formed during the Great French Revolution. All the citizens of the state create a nation. Both concepts have merged into an idea of a nation state. The Prussian nation state marginalized the border cultural communities such as peripheral Prussian Masurians living in the south-eastern area of East Prussia. The Masurians formed an evangelical, Polish-speaking, peasant community. They were famous for their loyalty to the subsequent Prussian and German rulers. Living in a relative isolation, the Masurians kept their Language, their own customs and habits for a long time. At the beginning of the nineteenth century there was a strong pressure towards their assimilation with German culture by eliminating the “Polish” dialect of the Masurians. To counter any possible Polish claims, the dialect was officially recognized as the “Masurian language”. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries Poles considered the Masurians as a regional branch of their own nation. The nationalistic radicalization during the Great War and Masuria plebiscite led to intensified assimilation of Masurians and the annihilation of the Masurian culture.

Opis:
The Second World War and the anticipated victory over the Third Reich, together with the significant weakening of the USSR, became in Poland the reason for developing various new geopolitical concepts and plans for reshaping Poland’s previous borders. The menace of a new aggression from both of Poland’s powerful neighbours in the process to rebuild their previous positions of power brought forward the idea of a federation of middle-Eastern Europe countries (the so-called „Intermarium”) and a future creation of a sufficient barrier against possible aggressors. In Poland these issues were broadly discussed by the nationalistic fractions such as the National Party, the Confederation of the Nation, the Szaniec Group and the „Fatherland” Organisation. The latter two were especially productive in this area. There was a general agreement in the nationalist movement regarding the necessity to move Poland’s borders to the lower Oder and the Lusatian Neisse. Some concepts reached even further, planning the creation of a Lusatian Coutry or indeed the reslavisation of Mecklenburg. Especially active in this regard was Professor Karol Stojanowski, the leader of the People’s National Military Organisation and the author of brochures propagating ideas such as „The West Slavic Country” and „The Reslavisation of Eastern Germany”. A very interesting concept of the „Great Nation” was presented by an endecian ideologist Adam Doboszyński in a brochure of the same title, in which Doboszyński propagated not only the federation of the „Intermarium” countries, but also predicted a gradual merging of these nations into a single „Great Nation” and even the eventual development of a common language.

Globalization entails the increasing volume, velocity and importance of flows within and across borders of people, ideas, goods, money, and much else, thus challenging one of sovereignty’s basic principles: the ability to control what crosses borders in either direction. Sovereign States increasingly measure their vulnerability not to one another, but to forces beyond their control. Necessity may also lead to reducing or even eliminating sovereignty when a government, whether from a lack of capacity or conscious policy, is unable to provide for the basic needs of its citizens. This reflects a view that state failure and genocide can lead to destabilizing refugee flows and create openings for terrorists to take root. Globalization is frequently discussed as a counterpoint to national sovereignty. It is commonly asserted that globalization has eroded national sovereignty or that it has rendered borders obsolete. In particular, it is asserted that, in a globalized world economy, governments have no alternative but to adopt neoliberal economic policies of privatization, deregulation and reductions in public expenditure. However, in the contest between social democracy and neoliberal globalization, the nation—state per se is only marginally relevant. The crucial issue is whether policy will respond to the wishes of a democratic electorate, or be tightly constrained by the ‘Golden Straightjacket’ of international financial markets.

The aim of the paper is to show how to solve contemporary nationalistic issues, known also as „ethnophiletism”, in Orthodox way. Although nationalism is not the ecclesiological problem, its ideas affect the Church, too. The aim of this study is to identify problems, which arising from these nationalistic ideas touch the Church, and to present some ways of solving them. This paper indicates the difference between Orthodox and secular understanding of the term „nation”. The Church attitude to nationality and related issues is not based on a secularism, but it takes as a foundation Christ’s teachings . The paper indicates the problematical questions, in which the clash between the Church teaching and the nationalistic ideas takes place. Church problems based on the ethnic and nationalistic ideas are especially emphasized in this article. Ethnic problems in the Church are presented as an ecclesiological distortion and redefinition of Christian ideals, from which the issue of ethnophiletism was discussed more detailed. The paper shows the problems and also indicates possible solutions in the spirit of the Orthodox Church teaching. Discussing questions of the universal councils decisions and returning to the original ecclesial standards, this paper points out the necessity of eliminating dangerous ideas inside the Church.

Syria is one of many countries in the Middle East diverse in terms of religion, nationality, and ethnicity. Internal divisions emerged when Syria reclaimed independence in 1946, but the differences inside Syrian society have become a taboo. One of the reasons for that was Arab nationalism, which claimed that they were all Arabs. The Syrian authorities managed to maintain the appearance of national homogeneity owing to these claims. This article aims to show the uniqueness of Arab nationalism, which is not characteristic of one country but of numerous states sharing a common past, language, and their citizens belonging to the family of the Arab nation. As a case study for Syria, this article analyses the basic concepts relevant to the subject (nationalism, the nation from the perspective of Islam, and Arab thought), the roots of pan-Arabism in Syria and its presence in the public and legal space. It also attempts to demonstrate that Arab nationalism helped the Syrian authorities (represented by the Alawite minority) blur national, ethnic, and religious differences and thus preserve the unity of society and state.

This article is dedicated to the idea of pop-nationalism and the connection between popular culture and how its productions (re)construct the American sense of national identity. The study is divided into subsections that delve into topics such as national identity in the current, fragmented social reality, the role of films in propagating American values during times of major socio-political crises, and the concept of banal nationalism according to Michael Billig. To analyze the elements of discourse, three films were chosen – Rocky IV (dir. Sylvester Stallone, 1985), Top Gun (dir. Tony Scott, 1986), and American Sniper (dir. Clint Eastwood, 2014). The research findings indicate that Hollywood films have a significant impact on building and reinforcing a sense of national pride and belonging in American society. Pop-nationalism is often used for entertainment purposes but also as a propaganda tool, especially during periods of international conflicts and political tensions.

In this article, we discuss two different directions about the Georgian nationalism of the 19th century: first we consider, thetrinity of language, homeland, faith – maybe one of the best classical formulations of nationalist project. And second, in the process of creation of the nation, in the course of research of the Georgian nation-building of that period, we can not avoid the role of printed media. Georgian intellectuals published their opinions on general internal problems or foreign policy processes and all the most important ideas expressed by them were widespread by the printed media. Under strict censorship, discussing foreign policy processes was an indirect way to disclose the attitudes of Georgian intellectuals to the building Georgian nation, restoration of state, territorial integrity and independence, as well as to the colonial politics in generall. “Let’s be self-sufficient” is a phrase best describing the main purpose of Georgian intellectuals. However, it is noteworthy that the creators of that time Georgian nationalismprimarily sought to gain autonomy within the Russian Empire, while full political independence was due to the reality a far and difficult goal. Generally, Georgian nationalism developed during that period was clearly mild and was far from ethno-cultural discrimination that is o”en characteristic for nationalism.

The aim of the debate was to look at what patriotism and nationalism in modern Poland are. The starting point for the discussion was a research carried out jointly by CBOS and Collegium Civitas in June 2017, Patriotism and nationalism in the minds of Poles. In the first part of the debate guests discussed different approaches to defining patriotism and nationalism and their mutual relationship. The second part was devoted to public discourse referring to these two concepts. In the last part of the panel guests discussed patriotism among young people, with particular emphasis on university students.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country with a special geo-civilization position. There are significant antagonisms between the three civilizations present here, completely separate ideologically, culturally and socially. According to Samuel Huntington’s theorem in Bosnia and Herzegovina take place a clash of civilizations that causes a general disagreement in the state, pursuing for completely different purposes by three nationalities, and as a consequence leads to instability in the country. The country, relatively young, has been a battlefield for influence for many centuries, which has shaped contemporary difficult situation. Nowadays, the agreement between Western, Islamic and Orthodox civilization which osculate in this area is impossible to achieve due to the diametric differences and purposes of these circles. Undoubtedly, Bosnia and Herzegovina is struggling with the consequences of such a clash of civilizations, as can be seen in the political, social and economic life of the country. The purpose of this article is to identify the problems arising from the presence of three civilizational circles in one state.

This CEEMR special section examines encounters and interactions between migrants as newcomers and their hosts. Our exploration derives from harnessing, first, a sense of belonging and, second, social interactions as two interrelated processes of encounter. To the extent that the host develops a sense of belonging with the newcomers and cultivates social interaction with them as the others, the newcomers would become visible and encounters followed by meaningful interactions with them would be possible. To look at this from another perspective, the newcomers develop a sense of belonging with their hosts as they encounter them and engage in social interactions with them in their everyday. We note that there is ample research that takes a critical stance on integration and inclusion already but there is still space to explore encounters and interactions in greater detail and why they matter for newcomers and host societies to establish intimacies with each other.

The tantric body of the Russian president – chingisids’ enlightened mind. Politics and nationalism in Buryat / Mongolian BuddhismThis paper is devoted to the role of Buddhism in the construction of ethnonational identity in Buryatia and Mongolia. On the case of the phenomenon of deification of Russian presidents by Buryat lamas I have analyzed: historically conditioned compounds of Buddhism and politics of the Mongolian groups, the role of Buddhism in ethnic mobilization in Buryatia and Mongolia after the fall of Communism and features of ethnonational model of Buddhism in two neighboring regions. In post-socialist period Buddhism was involved in ethnonational political projects. As a result, an attempt was taken to restore the monastic model of Buddhism, which had functioned in the pre-revolutionary period. Local peculiarities of Mongolian Buddhism were reinforced in order to produce the difference between the (national) Mongolian/Buryat and tibetan Buddhism. In Buryatia, Buddhism became a distinctive element used for ethnic differentiation of Buryats – in opposition to the Orthodox Russians. In Mongolia, traditionalist position of Buddhism was opposed in some way to Christianity, the various factions of which are distributed together with “agendas of modernity” from Western countries. In tantric union with the president Buryat lamas produce harmony between two national identities: Russian – civic and Buryat – ethnonational. Deification of the state power and giving it the attributes of loving femininity is a practice obliging the authority to generosity, which is attributed to the White tara. It is a strategy of the weak, who agree to a game of domination, but they try to define its rules themselves. Looking more broadly it can be said that the Buryats as a national community appeared just as a result of this fusion with the Russian power. Because of this they were separated from the pre-national family of Mongolian peoples. Mongols, for similar purposes use Chingis khan identified with the Buddhist form of Vajrapani. As a result, nationalist narrative is set to famous past, but uses the ‘eternal’ values, achieves harmony of all its elements.

Architecture is a ubiquitous form of visual rhetoric, whose influence on one’s feelings and subconsciousness may be analyzed in the context of both soft and hard power. Buildings were and still are often designed in a way that incites wellness. The Baroque architecture in general is one of the most vivid examples of that procedure, especially the forms proposed by the Society of Jesus, which played an important role during the Counter-Reformation. The more contemporary example is the architecture of Nazi Germany, which was supposed to invoke the feelings of superiority, power, terror and permanence. The monumentalism of structures and gigantomania are still visible in the 21st century in the shape of Burj Khalifa, which is now the tallest building in the world, constructed for the purpose of presenting the prestige of Dubai. Another example of architecture being a display of soft power is the general unification of a nation through art and culture, which can be found in the approach of the English towards the Gothic style and its perception of the British Isles. On the other hand, the instances of hard power in the context of architecture can be found in the countries which remained under the rule of Soviet Union. CCCP imposed their architecture in such areas using buildings and designs that were considered gifts from the superior nations to the subjugated ones, with the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw being an example. At the same time, the destruction of iconic buildings may be considered as showing dominance, the destruction of the World Trade Center being one of the most prominent cases.

The united Germany is struggling against numerous unexpected problems, or ones whose future scale was underestimated. Apart from the economic crisis in the “new” lands, the mass unemployment, the increase in delinquency, the deepening mutual antipathy between the inhabitants of the two parts of Germany, the society was confronted with a sudden increase in popularity of extreme nationalist ideas, as well as with escalation of violence directed against foreigners. In the years 1992-1997 the number of this kind of offences ranged between 1460 and 2500 cases a year. The offences were most often committed by young people. A considerable part of young people in Germany shows support for extreme nationalist ideas. The demands that foreigners should leave Germany and vacate the jobs and flats they occupy are especially popular. A much smaller part of the young generation sees good sides of National Socialism or presents revisionist views on the question of the borders. Taking into consideration social-demographic features, an average young nationalist is a man training for a job, with rightist political views, not religious, in a fairly good financial situation, whose parents do not have a higher education. Where should one look for explanation of the increase in attractiveness of extreme nationalist ideas among young people? The thesis saying that the German nation has inborn fascist inclinations cannot be in any way defended. Explaining this phenomenon with the negative effects of unification of Germany, and especially with a crisis of identity, has a justification, but is not quite convincing with respect to the West German young people. As it seems, the solution should be looked for in the features of modern societies. Growing social-cultural pluralism and deep individualisation help a society of choice come into being. In this society a man is doomed to responsibility not only for his behaviour, but also for the choice of criteria of this behaviour; the choice must be made from many axiological systems that have equal rights. The role of “the judge of choice” that an individual has taken away from tradition, religion, science or personal authorities, however, for a post-modernist man often becomes a weight rather than a privilege and frustration and a crisis of the meaning of life is his everyday “companion”. Hence, those offers become attractive that in a simple and fairly comprehensive way describe the surrounding reality and set the criteria for everyday choices. One of these offers is extreme nationalism that not only presents a simple division of the world into two halves, but also forms a clear hierarchy of values. It gives clear and simple answers to those who have lost their bearings, makes life sensible to such an extent that it brings relief and gives meaning to their everyday existence. Young people constitute a group that most eagerly needs and looks for offers of meaning of life. This is why they are so open to the influence of extreme nationalism that, at least for a short time, is able to give as ense of restoring axiological order in a young man' life.

The life and output of outstanding people, and John Amos Comenius was undoubtedly one of them, is often judged ahistorically and selectively, exposing what has stood the test of time, was a precursor to the future. It is forgotten, because it does not fit into the idealized picture, that like everyone, even the greatest were children of their times, they shared the opinions and superstitions of their contemporaries, and their successes and failures were determined by forces and processes far beyond their extraordinary possibilities. Comenius' achievements, the fact that he did not play such a role in the creation of pedagogy and universal school as he could, were burdened by the debilitating wars, the religious division of Europe caused by the speech of Martin Luther and the Scholar’s unequivocal standing on one side of the dispute, which for a long time practically closed the other, antagonistic side and most of the Continent to his pedagogical ideas.

The article is devoted to a reflection on the category of time in Georgi Gospodinov’s novel Vremeubežiŝte (2020), where the author undertakes a reflection on the processes of culpable and non-culpable self-destruction of societies that have rejected the rules of Enlightenment rationalism. Using the tools of dystopia, he creates a world gripped by collective madness, the sources of which he derives from extra-literary reality and links to contemporary political and cultural processes. Leszek Kolakowski’s concept of time as the vault of the human home, which is based on four pillars: reason, God, love, death, remains the philosophical point of reference for my deliberations. In turn, the concept of retroutopia of the sociologist of culture Zygmunt Bauman provided me with tools to reflect on a new type of rationalism after the conservative turn. René Girard’s concept of mimetic competition was helpful in considering the structure of the world presented in the novel.

The multifaceted, complex and historically variable relationships between the nation, the region and literature can be discussed from various points of view. In the paper, I focus on two aspects. The first one concerns the intertwining of national and regionalist ideas and its impact on the development of literary re-gionalism. The other one concerns regional literature as such and its contribu-tion to the creation of a national narrative. In the paper, I demonstrate that the reference to the national context makes it possible to track once again the de-velopment of literary regionalism, as well as read regional works anew. This is linked to the contemporary revaluation of regional works and its treatment as an important voice in the debate on the civil society and the nation.

The paper discusses the intertwining of religious-national symbolism and socrealist aesthetics in a popular pilgrimage site in Poland: Lichen´. In the last decades of the 20th century, a local cult with a sanctuary devoted to the Virgin Mary has turned into a popular nation-wide pilgrimage site. It is argued that the popularity of Lichen´ derives from the familiarity it evokes, that the longing for the recent and familiar past is fulfilled by the, seemingly contradictory, combination of popular religion and the aesthetics characteristic for the People’s Republic of Poland. This is visible in the monuments, paintings, architecture, the cult of one man, as well as the language at the sanctuary. However, this particular poetics, rooted in recent history, is vitalized by modern technology and global trends, thus creating a successful and attractive pilgrimage destination.

In the second view, especially in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), various aspects connected with nationalism seem to be of great significance. This is clearly reflected by the events which took place in, for example, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo or Macedonia.

The article offers a reconstruction of the text-based fight between Adolf Nowaczyński and Antoni Słonimski. It was not, as it is argued here, only a contest of styles and temperaments – though this exchange proved one of the most impressive, powerful, and dramatic polemics of that time in terms of articulation. However, it stemmed from a long history of tumultuous contacts which offered an amplified view of the problems of identity (Jewishness), politics, and community. A comprehensive view of the combat between Nowaczyński and Słonimski requires both an analysis of the rhetorics of the texts and an investigation into the context and dynamics of publication.

This paper attempts to provide a synthetic characteristic of the reception modes of Cathedral of Cologne predominating in poetry from c. 1800 to the early 20th century. The paper discusses the three basic reception modes of the Gothic – as a sacred place, as a natural style, as the German national style. The unfinished Cologne Cathedral was perceived after the Napoleonic wars as a symbol of the former glory of the German Nation. However, as the works on the completion of the building were progressing, the nostalgia about the past was gradually replaced by the national pride, which is visible in the metaphors used: in the second half of the 19th century we can observe the growing popularity of the “geological” similes (the cathedral as a mountain or rock), whose purpose is not only to reflect the “naturalness” and size of the Cologne church, but also the power of the nation which built it.

The main subject of the article is the issue of the ‘Berberist Crisis’ of 1949, which has shaken the Algerian national movement in the late 1940s. Its first act was an unprecedented speech by a young Paris law student and a high-ranking member of the national movement structure Rašīd ‘Alī Yaḥya. During one of the party meetings, this activist from Berber-speaking Kabylia region appealed to those gathered to discuss the official proposal, which explicitly condemned the “myth of Arab-Muslim Algeria”. The controversial proposal was not only put for discussion but also voted with 28 votes in favour and 4 against. In Algiers, the action of Kabyle activists was read as an act of disobedience and even potential secession, as a result of which the Parisian structures of the Movement were immediately dissolved. In practical term, this meant the beginning of the fratricidal struggles within Algerian national movement, which on the eve of the outbreak of the War of Independence almost led to its split. The events of the ‘Berberist Crisis’ of 1949 have permanently entered the history of difficult Arab-Kabyle relations in independent Algeria, becoming largely the first act of conflict between the two largest ethnic groups in this country.

This article is an attempt to explore the feasibility of using the analytical and interpretational tools offered by postcolonial criticism in order to reassess those texts in which Joseph Conrad expressed his political views. The author’s basic aim is to present the methods which Conrad used in his political essays in order to make a critique of great power politics in Central and Eastern Europe, and in particular to draw attention to techniques and content that were specifi cally designed to deconstruct the imperial practices of Germany and Russia. The article also shows how Conrad constructed a characteristically Polish defensive national identity, thus placing his political thinking within the context of the tradition of Romantic theories of nationalism, which found their finest expression in the writings of Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki and Conrad’s father Apollo Nałęcz-Korzeniowski.

Beginning with the middle of the nineteenth century, Bucharest was the hub of an emerging nation-state, finally turning into the capital city of a kingdom (in the century’s last quarter). This advancement implied the necessity for the town to adapt to a new status and to represent Romania before the world. To this end, broad-based investment projects were necessary; in the first place, the city had to be bestowed with edifices of public institutions. The forms of these buildings, and the designs of grand boulevards, were primarily rooted in the fascination with Paris of the time of Prefect Haussmann. Foreigners’ accounts of Bucharest testify to the image of a ‘Little Paris’ getting anchored at the time. However, the premises for this nickname are traceable in earlier period: an elitist snobbery about ‘Parisian’ salon life was taking shape in the early nineteenth century, whereas the incipient national ideas fell back on the French revolutionary tradition. The overwhelming French influence on the local elites finally raised increasing resistance as potentially damaging to the Romanian identity. This turn triggered certain political as well as architectural projects that were supposed to bring the country’s modern life to its presumed roots or ‘authentic’ tradition.

At the same time, the number of immigrants is constantly increasing – both from abroad and from the peripheries of Russia (internal migrants). Currently around 10-12 million legal and illegal immigrants live in the Federation, which leads to the increase of number of supporters of nationalist and xenophobic ideas. The incidents on ethnic grounds take place often. According to the SOVA Center for Information and Analysis, in 2012, 18 people were killed and 171 people were injured in the racist-ground encounters. The article shows, how increase in the number of immigrants and xenophobic acts influences the public safety and order in Russia.

Social challenges with the economic background result from social stratification not only within one society, but especially between societies. The division between wealthy north (with the visible trend of growing standards of life) and poor south (where the tendency is reverse due to high unemployment rates, overpopulation, housing and health problems as well as water and food shortages) is being more and more visible. Economic migrations have become a commonplace and also a source of further and more complicated political issues. They are pushing multicultural approaches forward on the one hand, but on the other aggravate ethnic conflicts, stimulate xenophobic and nationalist movements. Assimilation problems resulting from reluctance of indigenous societies and resistance of the migrants because of traditions, habits, values and religious beliefs only deepen dissimilarities in perception of how the coexistence should look like. This in turn imposes certain legislative and normative problems on governments and local societies and their administration. Aging of societies, which is mainly the problem of the most developed European countries, which are host countries for economic migrants at the same time, does not make this problem easier. This article will focus on most durging social problems in Europe which have conflict-generating potential, i.e. overpopulation on the one hand and aging of societies on the other, poverty and social stratifi cation, migrations and resulting assimilation problems.

At first, the aims of the party were presented with practise of their implementation (Afrikaner nationalism, Republicanism) during the inter-war period and especially after 1948 when the National Party, after winning election, started to rule South Africa continuously for 46 years. The phenomenon of supremacy of the National Party, its growing support among white electorate against a background of introducing apartheid policy and its later modifications are widely explained. Special emphasis is drawn to the period of transition and the role of National Party in the process. Presenting election results in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009, the reasons of declined importance and then marginalisation of the National Party are underlined.

Views of the National Party (1928-1939) merit special attention, given both the Party’s prominent role in the political life of interwar Poland and the interesting combination of various elements derived from diverse ideological trends within the Party’s programme. The ideological legacy of the National Party reflected, to a large extent, the key constituents of the National Democracy’s political thought, such as nationalism, representation of all social classes, national integrity and the concept of the nation-state. The National Party underwent major evolution and was subject to internal divisions which makes the image of its political thought much more complex. Based on an analysis of the National Party’s political thought, several conclusions can be formulated. The National Party developed its own views regarding political systems. These were, to a large extent, determined by their own system of values based on the national idea. The National Party’s political system projections were mainly inspired by (1) the successes of the “new type” states; (2) pressure from totalitarian systems; and (3) the influence of the economic and spiritual crisis. The National Party leaders wanted to make the political system more efficient. Nonetheless, views in favor of directly imitating any foreign political systems could hardly be found in the Party’s political thought. The National Party’s ideologists and journalists invariably stated that there was no pre-defined political system, but its form had to be adjusted to the specificity and unique character of a given national body. Although inspiration was drawn from external political systems, the Party’s political thought did not lose its independence.

The periodical “Opoka w  Kraju” may be classified into the mainstream of national magazines. Such a  view can be corroborated by the magazine’s references to the Catholic ethics, perception of the nation as the highest value, historicism, the role of a  family in maintaining one’s identity and a  life in accordance with the Latin civilization. In its columns, the magazine presented the role of the nation, the national vision of the state, foreign policy, and the importance of religion. The essence of the national identity and culture was being emphasized, part and parcel of which was the stereotype of a  Pole as a  Catholic. The magazine was also moralistic in its character. It presented the effects of actions incompatible with the Catholic ethics and described some political formations which were not concerned about the Polish national interests. An important aspect within the scope of ideas presented in “Opoka w  kraju” was a  dichotomousview of the world, consisting of potential allies and disclosed enemies.“Opoka w  Kraju” was a  family magazine. Its predecessor “Opoka w  Kraju” was published in exile, in London between 1963 and1988 by Jędrzej Giertych. A  year after his death in 1993, the magazine started to be published in Poland by Jędrzej’s son – Maciej Giertych. “Opoka w  Kraju” was based mainly on the political thought of Roman Dmowski, Felix Koneczny and Jędrzej Giertych. For this reason, its programme policy has not changed since 1969.

In this paper I propose to demonstrate how the anthropological view can highlight the effects of the relationship between ethnic nationalism and global processes. Showing the results of an ethnographical research conducted in 2015, I focus on the representation of social identity in the contemporary Basque Country. I emphasize the central role played by the new technologies for the identification of the Basque communities’ boundaries. The creation of „the eighth province“ (or province of the diaspora) shows how, in this context, Internet could transform the “imagined community” into a virtual reality. The ethnographical view proves to be useful to understand how local practices and discourses can interact with global phenomena: particularly significant is the spreading of archaeogenetic investigations in Euskal Herria, in order to verify the hypothesis of a reproductive isolation of Basque people. Moreover, a big part of local population is using genetic tests proposed online by DNA consulting agencies. It is important to identify how these genetic narratives are absorbed and reused by local populations and if they can reshape the past of a mnemonic community, influencing the representation of its future.

National landscape with Lenin in the background. Imagined national communitiesin the former Eastern BlocThe paper is a critical review of two recently published monographs on the subject of the everyday and banal forms of nationalism in the post-socialist countries of Europe and Asia. The authors of the monographs, drawing on the theories of national identity and nationhood by Benedict Anderson, Ernest Gellner, Eric Hobsbawm, Michael Billig, Michael Skey, Tim Edensor and others, showed their deep understanding of the processes of nation-building, while their ethnographic approach allowed them to gather original and non-obvious data on everyday practices and discourses by which citizens of the post-socialist countries reproduce and reconstruct their identities. However, both volumes display some shortcomings resulting from their renditions of the historical background, including the ethnic policies of the socialist states, as well as from constraints of the Western liberal perspective as applied to the social reality of the former Eastern Bloc. Pejzaż narodowy z Leninem w tle. This article is an attempt at a critical examination of the ideological nature of nationalism in the post-Soviet world, with particular focus on the Georgian experience. Social, political, cultural and economic changes which took place in Georgia after the Soviet Union’s dissolution also aimed to change the society’s mental structure. In this context, the idea of nationalism is a way to reorganize politics and society. Nationalism in post-Soviet Georgia is accommodated in the paradigm of new ideological hegemony. Liberalism and conservatism considered as alternatives to communism have become the principal ideological dialectics of post-Soviet nationalism, which also mirrors the general ideological orientation of nationalism in post-Soviet societies. Also, political-ideological instrumentalization of nationalism has been aimed at strengthening political positions and privileges of the new ruling class, while it has also played one of the central roles in the political and cultural process of power struggle. This article sheds light on the major issues of ideological hegemony and reconstruction of nationalism in a changing post-Soviet society.

The Confederation of the Nation, the ideological continuation of the National Radical Camp Falanga during the Second World War, created a concept for the post-war order in Central Europe which would be guaranteed by a new geo-political construct – the Slavic Empire – with borders defined by the three seas: the Baltic, the Black and the Adriatic. Poland, with its Western borders significantly expanded compared to the pre-war period and in union with Lithuania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, would take the lead of the proposed block. Despite the name of the proposed supernation, the Baltic countries as well as Romania and Hungary were welcome to participate in shaping the new future. The Confederates did not see any other option for either Poland or any other countries of the Intermarium. The leader of the Confederation of the Nation Bolesław Piasecki wrote: „No other choice remains, as either we, as the culturally paramount nation among the Slavs, take up and implement the idea of designing the geo-political Slavic bloc, or the Poles and all Slavs fall into a civilizational abyss, becoming slaves to foreign forces and their own unawareness. (…) If our iron will is lacking, it is easy to imagine Europe without Poland and the rest of Slavs as actors of history”.

The paper presents interdisciplinary research using the framework of cognitive linguistics based metaphor theory and nationalism studies of political science. Frames of movement are placed under scrutiny during the discourse analysis of the 2016 and 2021 election manifestos of the Scottish National Party and social media posts. In relation to metaphors of movement, images describing the future of an independent Scotland are also detected. The authors attempt to analyse and interpret findings both from the perspective of cognitive linguistics and ethno-symbolism. Apart from the texts of the manifestos, the timeframe of the research involved social media posts two months preceding and two months following the elections in both cases. Methodology was issue-driven and computer assisted but supervised: key words linked to movement were extracted from the manifestos and clustered. Their occurrence and frequency in the social media posts was checked. In the qualitative analysis phase, messages of the manifestos and of the posts were contrasted in order to answer our research question what kind of persuasive political discourse was used when options for the citizens were outlined.

Opis:
The article explores a possible connection between nationalism, capitalism, and nationalist movements’ common hostility towards environmental policies. It draws from materialist assertions about the capitalogenic nature of ecological degradation and modernist theories of nationalism, which explain it as a product or by-product of capitalist modernization. By employing theories of nationalism’s instrumentality in preserving the existing social hierarchies, the article proposes that this approach might be extrapolated onto socioecological hierarchies, which are contested or have their fundamental rules challenged by many environmental policies. Nationalism may then be seen as an instrument of capital – personified by the privileged elites – taking advantage of an ideology that appeals to those ‘left behind’ by modernization and globalization to thwart or delay changes to the socioecological status quo. An identity-based movement is thus utilized to protect the continuing exploitation and appropriation of nature. This proposed connection underscores the need for further empirical research, which is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the topic and its potential impact on environmental policies.

This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of populist neo-nationalism in Austria and answer the following research questions: 1. How can populism and its type of populist neo-nationalism be characterized?; 2. What are the determinants of populist neonationalism in Austria? 3. What are the ways populist neo-nationalism has been utilized in Austria? The Chantal Mouffe thesis was verified, according to which the development of populism is a response to the shortcomings of liberal and deliberative democracies. The research process used a methodology typical of the social sciences, especially the political sciences. Since the 1980s, we have addressed the growing importance of radical right-wing populism in European politics. Some researchers refer to this phenomenon as new populism or populist neo-nationalism. The party’s growing importance since 1986 was related, among other things, to the principles of Euroscepticism it proclaimed and its demands to limit or even ban immigration. The FPÖ’s achieved the most tremendous success under the government of Jörg Haider. Its entry into the ruling coalition has confused international relations.

Opis:
The article examines the emergence and use of the idea of dichotomy between civil and ethnic nationalism. Based on the following analysis, the suggestion is made that civilian nationalism also has an ethnic character. This leads to the conclusion that civilian nationalism should be considered as a subcategory of ethnic nationalism. This somewhat reduces the effectiveness of using dichotomy as aheuristic analysis tool, but one must take into account the inherent limitations. The rooted nature of civil dichotomy against ethnic nationalism is so strong today that it does not allow us to see the obvious. Under “obvious” it is meant the normative nature of both concepts. The fact that most researchers still consider ethnic nationalism “bad” and civilian “good” leads to a neglect of critical thinking, as the result of which, at best, we get a biased analysis. Quite often civilian nationalism is perceived as an indicator of democracy and stability, and ethnic nationalism is of conflict and chaos.

Artykuł opisuje cechy radykalnego nacjonalizmu rosyjskiego na terytorium ziem ukraińskich w XX wieku. Niejednorodność wśród rosyjskich środowisk nacjonalistycznych jest nadal kwestią kontrowersyjną. Podstawę klasyfikacji metod zwalczania przedstawicieli tych nacjonalistycznych ruchów dla realizacji ideologicznych stanowisk i rzeczywistych idei nacjonalistycznych w państwie rosyjskim, stanowi typologia rodzaju działania. Autor przeanalizował działania rosyjskich radykalnych prawicowych organizacji. Dużą uwagę przywiązuje do podstawowych idei radykalnego nacjonalizmu rosyjskiego i przyczyn ich dystrybucji wśród ludności ukraińskiej.
The body of the article goes on to discuss the features of the radical Russian nationalism in the Ukrainian territory in the early twentieth century. Diversity among Russian nationalist circles remains a controversial issue. The basis of our classification of methods to combat the representatives of the nationalist ideological currents for the implementation of provisions and own nationalist ideas in the Russian state, is the typology of the nature of the action. The author analyzes the activity of Russian radical right-wing organizations. Much attention is paid to the basic ideas of radical Russian nationalism and the reasons for their dissemination among the Ukrainian population.

Opis:
W pierwszej części zostanie naszkicowana istota nacjonalizmu integralnego i rola władzy królewskiej w stosunku do narodu, według przekonań Ch. Maurrasa.
The aim of the article is to analyze Charles Maurras’ concept of integral nationalism, in which he assumed the restoration of the limited monarchy to be the only appropriate governance model which enables a nation to develop. The first part outlines Ch. Maurras’ perception of integral nationalism and the role of monarchy in relation to the nation. The latter part is an attempt to use the French version of nationalism in modern European monarchies and find a set of characteristics that should represent the new royal power. The results of the research show that Maurras’ new version of nationalism was not as utopian as it was claimed by his critics and has applications in modern European monarchies.

Opis:
The article deals with issues concerning the pedagogical aims of studying traditional humanities in present realities of Polish society, which at the end of the 20th century overthrew communism. The new political and civilization conditions have caused major social changes that require a new approach to the humanities. Meanwhile, in Poland there is still a traditional and conservative cult of national identity and heritage, which prevents the development of an open society based on cultural tolerance and understanding of the differences that separate us from the West and other cultures. Humanities should be an academic tool for shaping an individual and creative personality and not for preserving national cultural and historical mythology. Such social pedagogy leads to a closed society oriented towards the past and not towards modernity. An educational policy that promotes this attitude treats cultural heritage as a tool of political control over society. In our times, humanities consist in discovering and interpreting the world around us and in forming an independent thinking. Literature, philosophy and other liberal arts cannot be just a sterile studying of a dead tradition.

Since the early 2000s, Israel has adhered to a particularly virulent strain of economic neoliberalism which has led to an unprecedented rise in nationwide levels of poverty and inequality. Opis:
Kronborg Castle in the Danish town of Elsinore is a location strongly associated with Shakespeare thanks to the setting of Hamlet. It is a place where fiction currently eclipses history, at least in the context of a cultural tourist industry where Shakespeare’s name is worth a great deal more than Danish national heritage sites. Indeed, Kronborg is now widely marketed as ‘Hamlet’s Castle’ and the town of Elsinore has acquired the suffix ‘Home of Hamlet’. This article examines the signifiers implied in the naming and renaming of Kronborg as a Shakespearean location, while also looking at its unique international Shakespearean performance tradition, which spans two centuries. It describes how the identity of the castle has been shaped by its Shakespearean connection against the backdrop of changing ideologies in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and poses questions as to how this identity may continue to develop within the current contexts of renewed nationalism in Europe and the world.
