Films are an important source of symbolism. They help people construct a national identity and memory of the past. Contemporary lm productions in Central and Eastern Europe which focus on themes such as World Wars I and II and post-communism, rewrite and rede ne the national identity of citizens. It is important to analyze and discuss these lms as a way to gaining a richer understanding of the discourses of national identity. In the Polish lm Rose (Róża) by Wojciech Smarzowski, the main female character is the recipient of an imposed identity before and after World War II. On the other hand, in the Polish lm In Darkness director Agnieszka Holland tells the story of a man who helps Jews hide in the sewer system. Holland and Smarzowski portray Poles as individuals willing to risk their lives for Jewish people: this is also national identity construction.

Opis:
Both in the Polish and Russian language the term ‘nation’ is understood in a slightly different way than the English word ‘nation’. It is understood not only in cultural but also political terms, and in numerous contexts it is used to denote ‘the people’ or an ‘ethnic nation/ethnos’. Thus, when we use words ‘nation, nationality, narodnost’, sometimes only the context makes it possible to decide whether we mean the nation, nation or ethnos. However, this lack of clear distinction in the colloquial discourse should not make one conclude that there are not fully shaped nations in Poland and Russia. It is just that the colloquial discourse fails to notice these vague distinctions. In the scientific discourse in both countries, these differentiations have been precisely defined and used for a long time.

Opis:
The debate about identity in the process of its decryption should be placed in the logic of a network system. In the course of the evolution of international structures a multi-level governance model was developed. It is all the more important that from the subnational, through national (today wrongly regarded as the basic one) to transnational, there is an axis for a discourse around the issues which are called either international or European (i.e., community). Interpenetration of subjectivity led to co-occurrence of events, which only seems to represent the same semantic range. Coincidence understood in such a way involves the model of co-occurrence of "identities" which are subject to antagonism. Un- doubtedly, it is difficult to determine definitional scope of the notion of Polish national identity and German national identity. In this case the difficulty is heightened by the need to determine the national identity as the official position of Poland or Germany in the structures of European Union. Since the identity of a nation is defined both expan- sively and sovereignly (authority on behalf of the citizens), the cosmopolitanization of such an attitude is insignificant. Barbara Skarga points out that the new kind of order does not arise, because the world seems to be ultimately ordered, as demiruges wanted. On the other hand, already in 1990 Jurgen Habermas argued that we entered a new era of a relationship between the state and the citizen, since the state had lost the pre- vailing monopoly on determining factors of citizenship, which were also influenced by Postmodernist Turn.

The paper attempts to answer the question about the relation between the construction of national identity in contemporary world and children’s literature. Qualitative analysis of books for children was made. The main assumption is that stories we tell children create a specific cultural map of narration, thanks to which children create the feeling of identity, which is both individual and social. Contemporary literature for young children, contrary to older books, is devoid of national character.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to describe the evolution of identity within European societies in the 21st century driven by two factors that overlap – migration crisis of 2015 and globalization as well as the impact of these two factors on the European liberal economic and political model. The aforementioned processes have generated several negative effects and as a result they have put to test the elaborate and long-time project of United Europe. Particular nations started to loudly express their concerns and objections regarding the rules governing economic relations and the ways of dealing with migration issues. The multidimensional sense of insecurity has inspired a pan-European dispute with questions regarding areas and scope of unity, sovereignty etc. Some turbulence in identity of European nations has been observed leading to different changes in perception of identity including recurrence of seemingly long forgotten definitions of national identity. One can even say that the future success of the EU project has become dependent on the problem of European identity. This article is an attempt to analyze the impact of aforementioned factors on the identity of European societies.

Opis:
The research task of the essay is to answer the question of what is the face of the nation in the ethnic enclaves situated at the peripheries of national states. The subject of the analyses is the local population of the village Jaworzynka. In 1922, the settlement Herczawa was founded as a local unit independent from Jaworzynka. Since then Herczawa began to belong to Czechoslovakia. The state-owned status of Jaworzynka, which started to be a part of the Republic of Poland, was recognized after the World War I. The author takes into account the longue durre of folk and national culture generated in the Silesian Beskidy in the second half of the 18th century. The national culture is the main term applied to the investigations of the borderland regions. According to the ethno-symbolic approaches (Anthony D. Smith) and culturalism methods in sociology (Antonina Kłoskowska), the author analyses in his research: 1) language, 2) religion, 3) folkways and mores 4) arts, 5) local knowledge and literature. These elements delineate the sphere of symbolic culture. Based on the common folk culture, two national cultures have been formed nowadays – the Polish and Czech ones. Both Polish and Czech Census Bureau data and objective elements of national culture discussed in the essay indicate the process of national revival. The local people of Jaworzynka identify themselves as Poles and the population of Herczawa define themselves as Czechs. The content and the form of the local culture are visible in Jaworzyna, but they seem to be latent or diminishing in Herczawa.

Intelligentsia biographies in Belarus. A case studyDrawing on a case study from the body of empirical research which includes 30 narrative interviews conducted using Fritz Schuetze’s biographical method with male and female residents of Belarus, the author explores the process of Belarusian identity formation of a Belarusian-speaking dissenting intellectual. The case study is drawn from the author’s research into the ways in which Belarusian-speaking intellectuals (the group locating itself in opposition to the establishment by the very recourse to the literary Belarusian language of instruction and everyday life as well as other dissenting identity markers) conceptualize and hone their national identity. One can trace the path towards fully-fledged Belarusian identity which unrolls via turning points, thanks to significant others through participation in intelligentsia circles. One of the membership rules in the social world of intelligentsia is the use of the high-profile Belarusian language. The interpretive analysis is set against the backdrop of the socio-linguistic situation in contemporary Belarus with its authoritarian regime, advanced Russification, contested memory field, restrained memory work and conflicting historical and national discourses.

Reinventing Ukraine: Ukrainian National and Supra-National Identity in Contemporary Polish Opinion-Making PressUkraine in XXI century has been experiencing new social and political changes which resulted into shifts of the national identity. It has left resonance not only within Ukrainian society but abroad as well. Historical events such as Orange revolution or Euromaidan provided new directions for reconsidering Ukrainian identity by the external actors. The image of Ukraine has been created abroad with the help of mass media, which enable the wide audience to receive information about particular events and make own conclusions. Information, presented in the opinion-making press worth better for deliberating the issue of identity. Thus, this paper seeks to investigate how Polish intellectuals present Ukraine in contemporary Polish opinion-making press. This research on the one hand provides understanding of Ukrainian identity problems, and gives possibility to examine positive and negative aspects of the way identity has been expressed. On the other hand, it demonstrates the way public opinion-makers in Poland perceive, construct and reconstruct identity of Ukraine, Ukrainian nation and present them to their society. The article seeks to investigate what attributes of Ukrainian identity were crucial for Polish media. What factors, historical events, cultural and political features, myth and symbols were important for deliberating Ukraine in Polish opinion-making press. Ponowne odkrycie Ukrainy: Ukraińska narodowa i ponadnarodowa tożsamość we współczesnej polskiej prasie opiniotwórczejW XXI wieku Ukraina przeżywa nowe zmiany społeczne i polityczne, które prowadzą do zmian tożsamości narodowej. Zarazem jednak unaoczni, w jaki sposób polskie środowiska opiniotwórcze postrzegają, konstruują i rekonstruują tożsamość Ukrainy i narodu ukraińskiego i jak przedstawiają te kwestie społeczeństwu. Staram się jednocześnie wyjaśnić, jakie atrybuty ukraińskiej tożsamości – wydarzenia historyczne, cechy kulturowe i polityczne, mity i symbole – były istotne dla rozważań nad Ukrainą w polskiej prasie opiniotwórczej.

The article deals with the relation between films and the concept of the national identity. These issues are discussed on the example of Serbian cinema in the 1990s. Using Anthony Smith’s approach to the visual representation of national identity, the ways in which films in Serbia construct national identity is discussed. After that, several films are analyzed that critically question the concept of nationalism. This analysis demonstrates how ideology, in this particular case, nationalistic ideology, at the semantic level can be related to films, one of the most influential segments of popular culture.

The formation of the global civil community causes the effacing of division into “the natives” and “the strangers” within the framework of individual states. Integration and unification processes give a new dimension to such notions as: emigration, diaspora and national identity. Emigration is more and more often comprehended as civilization phenomenon. Its positive economic, political and cultural advantages are the focus of attention; the countries that receive emigrants very often reap the economical benefits and the emigrants themselves solve the problems of unemployment in their own countries; migrational movements, on the other hand, help solve political and social problems, make the global integration, and mixing of cultural and civilization norms easier. Emigration itself helps to achieve cultural compromises, get used to mutual dissimilarities and accept differences.

However, since the decline of Cymraeg (the Welsh indigenous language) and new social developments in the last two centuries, the notion of Welsh identity has required a reconceptualization to face up to new realities. The following article attempts to indicate to what extent the Welsh language was and still is part of the essence of Welshness and what other factors aff ect the understanding of Welsh nationhood presently.

Since its inception the Icelandic film industry has used the strategy of combining telluric elements with national- istic narratives. In many films one may also find visual structures that can be linked with the ‘tourist gaze’ – the term as we know it from the texts of John Urry. Despite a focus on some unique qualities of Icelandic nature and its cultural heritage (that can be attractive to foreign viewers) the specificity of cinematic production processes on the island belong to the structure of local, national cinema. Moreover, the 1980s, considered as the time of the rebirth of the Icelandic film industry and its rapid modernization, are full of films containing conservative or leftist telluric topics which are difficult for foreign audiences to understand. A new, transnational quality of Icelandic film features began with the film debut of Friðrik Þór Friðriksson in 1987. His fusion of modernist and postmodernist plots has encouraged other filmmakers to start the process of re-interpretation of the classic narrative structures, and to render the ironic demystification of some nationalistic themes.

The qualitative study presented here was carried out in 2008 as a graduate diploma thesis in Psychology. It was aimed at examining Poles’ experience of living in the United States of America and two European countries, viz. Italy and the United Kingdom. The data consisted of online interviews with ten Poles: 4 from the US, 3 from Italy, and 3 in the UK. The sample was made up of nine females and one male living in the countries in question between 4 months and 17 years (age range 23–36) who had moved from Poland for reasons other than purely economic and, unlike subjects of similar studies on Polish migrants, were also able to speak the host language fluently. The analysis was carried out by means of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, 2003) that allowed to examine the participants’ individual experience of adapting to new social and cultural environments. The results were further analysed and discussed with reference to the relevant literature on the subject of individualistic and collectivist societies (Hofstede, 2001), acculturation (Berry, 2003) and migrants’ identities, as well as earlier studies carried out in the States (Boski, 1992) or in European countries (e.g. Kosic, 2006). The findings were that, regardless of gender and age, the interviewed Poles tended to express respect for the host culture and people and a strong level of identification with Poles in Poland. Despite that strong national identity, however, their level of identification

International relations have always been a very complex and controversial phenomene affected by historical and political events, wchich influenced the forming of mutual prejudices, antipathy and stereotypes. The concept of national identity and nationalism began to shape relativetly late, in the XVI-XVII cebturies, and their advent was connected with national self-consiousness rise and political conditionnaly. This statement is either applicaple to the Polish-Russian relations, wchich not always were inflated with animosity and hatred. The author of the article considers the process of Russia and the Russians'negative image forming, defines the most significant events, and uniting and separating factors. In this context the two spheres of influence are meant: political-historical and cultural. In the author's opinion, nowadays the negative image of Russia and the Russians is fixed in mind of the Polish. It is very hard to overcome these prejudices, however there is such a possibility.

The author assumes that popular culture plays a powerful role in the process of socialization of young generation. The author tries to present that the conventional national symbols are being replaced by pop symbols and thus become the sources of national identity. The concepts of banal nationalism put forward by Michael Billig or Tim Enderson’s idea of everyday life’s practices in the development of national identity are being used. In the text, the phenomenon of James Bond is used to analyze the contemporary debates on British identity (Britishness). The author assumes that James Bond is a great example of Englishness that serves as a complex manifestation of a British hero which may, in turn, play a crucial role in political, civic, and patriotic education.

Theis article presents the views and opinions expressed in two London periodicals published in the 1950s and 1960s by Polish students living in exile, namely Życie Akademickie and Kontynenty, focusing on the problem of preservation  of “Polishness” among Polish emigrants of the younger generation. In the first part of the text, the views presented, include those of the members of the older generation of emigrants and refugees (e.g. Czesław Miłosz or Witold Gombrowicz), giving advice to the young, as well as of the young themselves (e.g. Wiktor Poznański or Wojciech Gniatczyński). The second part of the article refers to the notion of patriotism and the problem of national vices, which were also subject to a discussion which went on in the émigré press. The aim of the article is to illustrate the discrepancies between the attitudes of two – or even three – generations of Polish emigrants, concerning the issue of Polish national identity.

The popularity of populist parties and movements nowadays reflects the crisis of representative democracy. It is accompanied by the growing role of media in politics, which might be seen as the result of citizens’ dissatisfaction with the existing models of intermediation. The media also play a crucial role in the process of identity creation, at the same moment they illustrate the dificulty of defining identity anew.

European Union competences, ultra vires, national identity, constitutional identity
Opis:
The European Union is an international organization which has a broad scope of competences that have been transferred to it by its Member States in the founding Treaties. The object of this text is to identify arguments raised, or that potentially might be raised, by national Constitutional Courts (and in the future possibly by other actors as well) to exclude in certain instances the application of EU law or EU jurisprudence in the territory of a particular Member State. The three main reasons for such an exclusion might be: 1) that an action of the EU is perceived as being ultra vires; 2) that an action of the EU infringes on national identity; and 3) that an action of the EU infringes on constitutional identity. The ultra vires argument has only recently appeared in the jurisprudence of some constitutional courts, whereas the constitutional identity argument has been present since the 1970s. The national identity argument is based on a notion protected, since 1993, by the Treaty establishing the European Union. All three of these arguments are to a certain extent intermingled and their use by national actors for excluding the application of EU law is fraught with uncertainty.

The article aims to refer to issues related to the understanding of national identity, assuming that the basic reference point for the theoretical analysis is the model of universally recognised European values. Attempting to concretise the concept of national identity and identify determinants affecting its shaping, reference was made to the problem of identifying Poles with European values. Since the problem of national identity was often the object of interest of researchers, especially during the intensification of integration processes in Europe and the impact of such phenomena as globalisation, migration or development of mass culture with a cosmopolitan character, there were observed increased anxieties of various nations encouraging underlining their own “separateness”, and also greater identification with the national community. The author does not treat this phenomenon as disturbing because, according to the latest trends related to the understanding of European identity, it can crystallise as the sum of the identity of European national countries.

Besides the categories associated with, so-called, “postmodern identity”, often questioning the very existence of dentity as such, other issues have appeared which indicate multilevel identity, taking into account relationship between European, national and regional identity. On the margin of this debate another and new subplot emerged, which is related to migration from non-European cultures and the possibility of spreading and therefore shaping a new model of European identity.

The six basic areas into which post-1989 Rusyn literature in Slovakia is divided are the following: poetry dedicated to the emerging national identity; poetry and prose based on folklore; rural-themed prose; metaphorical poetry dealing with diverse themes; literature for children and young people; literary translations. Authors belonging to the individual groups prove with their works that aspects of national identity, self-identification and, in fact, national revival continue to re-sound strongly in contemporary Rusyn literature in Slovakia.

Opis:
Man inhabits an ecological niche, creates a bond in society, settles down and manages the niche transforming it into the environment. In this process, he creates culture. In culture, he shapes the view of the environment, which he names nature. It is important to indicate that what we consider to be nature is created by a human. The environment is subject to changes due to human activities. Transformations of views about it are not their simple consequences. Nature is a cultural interpretation. As such, it is part of the heritage, or resource considered important in the construction of identity. The environment reacts to human activity in a way that views do not control. On the other hand, they influence interpretations, consciousness. In this sense, nature can become part of the national heritage. Nature played a special role after the partitions; along with the language it created another space of freedom. The Polish language referred to speaking and feelings focused on the ideal of the “country of childhood”. Regaining independence transferred images and feelings into the realm of myth, above all the borderland myth. Then urbanization and industrialization treated as a synonym of progress gave birth to a new form of longing for nature and opposition to its limitation through ownership. The revolution was supposed to give nature back to society and at the same time to subordinate it to the requirements of a planned economy. In free Poland, nature has been separated from the concepts and policies related to modernization. Natural heritage comes down to resources that can be commercialized. It leads to the stagnation of thinking about national identity. The author postulates to examine whether what we inherited is still a useful resource for the national community in constructing the necessary adaptations of Poland to global challenges.

The article is focused on the constructing of national identity by the authorities of the Republic of Tajikistan by using such elements located in the public space of Tajik cities as monuments or billboards. Referring to certain values and historic symbols, they serve to build a specific vision of the Tajik nation and its history. For example, one of the key characters of national narration is the Iranian ruler Isma’il Samani (9th/10th century), today promoted as the “father” of the Tajik nation. Of course, some of these concepts appeared as early as the Soviet era or directly after the collapse of the USSR, but now they are of specific nature, connected with the social and political situation of the country. Using Manuel Castells’ terms, the analysed national identity may be referred to as legitimising – serving to consolidate the current power and domination.

Opis:
The paper aims to provide an overview of the main streams of perception of Israeli and Palestinian national identities by Polish authorities and society, as well as analyze their sources. The study covers the period of time when both of the national identities took shape, that is since the beginning of the mass Jewish migration to Palestine at the beginning of the XXth century until the present time. As the Jews have for a long time been an important part of Polish history and society, Poles have a strong perception of Jewish, and consequently also Israeli, identity. Polish Jews, who played a crucial role in establishing the Israeli state and shaping Israeli national identity, were treated by many Poles as “our Jews”. This perception was conditioned by internal factors, such as social relations, cultural proximity, historical memory or political views. In contrast, a perception of the Palestinian identity from the very beginning was conditioned externally, because it resulted from international political developments and a narrative imposed by foreign powers. Another special feature of the Polish perception of Israeli and Palestinian identity is the fact that public opinion very often differs significantly from the political position of state authorities.

Cinematography can be used as a weapon in the battle for identity. Kurdish people are in a constant need to reinvent their national identity. Some of them use cinema as a tool to tell their stories in order not to be forgotten. One of them – a critically acclaimed director from Iran, Bahman Ghobadi is known especially for his cinematic contribution to the Kurdish issue. The article briefly depicts the history of Kurdish cinema and describes in detail the image of Kurds in Bahman Ghobadi's first four feature films - A Time for Drunken Horses (2000), Marooned in Iraq (2002), Turtles Can Fly (2004) and Halfmoon (2006). All these films are not only great pieces of art, full of symbolic images, but they also contain a complex image of the Kurdish nation. Ghobadi uses his camera to tell stories of small, local communities displaced between Iran, Iraq and Turkey, who struggle to maintain their own culture and dignity.

Catholics in Belarus: the Deconstruction of Polish Identity? The article discusses the transformations in the national identification of members of the younger generation of Catholics in Belarus through the context of the language changes resulting from the use of Belarussian in the Catholic Church and the increasing prestige attached to this language. The political transformations at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, which led to modifications in the situation of the Church in Belarus, have influenced these processes. Simultaneously, the model of religiosity has undergone reconstruction so that it has gradually ceased to be linked with issues of national identification. Religious practices are becoming a more personal matter and are less dependent on social pressure. Similarly, the choice of one’s nationality in a diverse society have become an individual matter.

Branding Greenland as a form of expression of national identity? In the times of globalisation there is a tendency for countries to differentiate from others. Greenland is an example of a country that after a long period of colonisation and establishing self-government, in 2009 began to redefine its identity and reveal it to the world. A branding campaign has been implemented to communicate a newly defined image of Greenland. This campaign has been carried out using mainly social media and the tools that the Internet has to offer. The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of nation branding and to define the relation between nation branding and national identity. The article presents an analysis of the relationship between the degree of declared religiosity and the sense of national identity among Poles. By adopting the perspective of the sociology of nation and drawing on its achievements, it aims to answer two questions: what is the place of Catholicism in the socially defined criteria of belonging to Polishness, and determine the extent to which the degree of declared religiosity influences the sense of national identity in Poles. Empirical data for the analysis originates from representative polls on the social criteria of Polishness conducted by CBOS and Kantar Public (formerly OBOP, TNS) between 1988 and 2018. In theoretical terms, the study draws on the model of public opinion proposed by Zbigniew Bokszański to conceptualize and research collective national identity. The conducted analysis demonstrates for instance that the Catholic faith is at the bottom of the hierarchy of social criteria of Polishness; it also reveals an increasingly conspicuous polarization of attitudes of people admitting varying degrees of religiosity towards the preferred model of national identity.

This study was to discuss and overview the infrastructure of digital citizenship in fostering the reinforcement of national identity in Indonesia. This study was prompted by a problem in the development of digital citizenship infrastructure, which could be an instrument in fostering national identity in Indonesia. The process of forming a national identity could be emphasized through various platforms in the digital citizenship infrastructure, so that the internalization of national values among Indonesian citizens could strengthen their identity as such. This study took the form of qualitative research with a phenomenological approach, constructing theories and phenomena concerning the infrastructure of digital citizenship in Indonesia. The results showed that the infrastructure of digital citizenship reinforced national identity in Indonesia in three ways, namely: 1) internalizing awareness of digital literacy through Citizenship Education learning, 2) implementing Habituation of national identity values in the digital citizenship infrastructure, and 3) running digital forums that could reinforce the digital citizenship infrastructure and strengthen national identity.

In her article, Katarzyna Szkaradnik analyses the memoirs of the pioneers of the Polish national movement in the area of Cieszyn Silesia, and also the memoirs of subsequent social, cultural, and educational activists written before the end of World War I. Szkaradnik examines these texts by focusing on the representations of the idea which the authors were spokesmen for, i.e., Polishness as a cultural legacy as well as Poland as a promised land where the people of Cieszyn Silesiawill gain due rights. The metaphors “awakening” and “rebirth” naturalized the bond between these people and Polishness, which was supposed to last thanks to, among other things, Polish religious publications, despite Silesia’s separation from so-called Motherland. In this respect, the memoirs have persuasive-didactic functions in that they help to build and strengthen the national identity. Szkaradnik examines the rhetorical strategies used by the activists (and scholars) of the said movement as well as the system of values which they propagate. The fact of the national activists’ being servants of an ideology is accompanied by their ideology of service, akin to the positivist idea of educational and economic work. Importantly, most of the authors descended from local people of humble origin and they gave up on the chance of social advancement in order to help their countrymates to attain social, political, and intellectual emancipation.

After proclaiming independence in 1918, one of the most important tasks was creation of new visual-architectural and design identity which was called ‘Lithuanian Style’ or ‘National Style’. That search for a new image had to be established by an intentional, wilful act which could be able to create a desired object in accordance with the pre-planned model. Because of the multi-national origin of the artists, their distinct education in various countries (Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, etc.), and the multiculturalism of customers, the same idea of countries’ identity was realised in very different visual forms. This variety of Lithuanian interior design approaches was strived to be untangled for the first time in the scientific monograph Lithuanian Interwar Interiors 1918–1940. Meanwhile, the current article (due to the space limit) presents the idea of national tendencies in the interior design. The latter prompts the understanding that theoretical formulation of Lithuanian National Style was ultrarational, attractive, and suitable for different aesthetic tastes – above all, it truly represented various social strata and nations living in Lithuania at that time.

Most of the participants in the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) were fighting for the ideals of democracy and freedom, for the defeat of fascism and Nazism and for the new Czechoslovak Republic with equal status for the Slovak people within it. They could not have foreseen that communist totalitarianism would be established after the war, one that would try to use the Uprising as a precursor for the socialist revolution (Fremal 2010: 359). The Communist Party, with the support of historians, utilised the legacy of the SNP to justify its political actions. Czechoslovak identity was also constructed through the image of the SNP, whose annual celebrations provided the communists with the opportunity to interpret the legacy of the SNP in various forms. This work deals with the way the communists interpreted the SNP in order to convince the public that this was a people's Uprising intended to lead to social equality and the eventual acceptance of communism in Czechoslovakia in the years 1947,1948 and 1954.

This paper is dedicated to Lithuanians, one of the smallest national minorities in Poland. It characterises the Lithuanian community, which densely populates the Podlasie region in three clusters (Puńsk, Sejny, Suwałki). The study presents the last century’s history of the Lithuanian education and culture, including differences between the Puńsk and Sejny centres. Lithuanians’ strong sense of national identity is closely connected with their mother tongue, culture and traditions. The minority’s community nature is evidenced by the high prestige and broad scope of use of the native dialect. The functions of the primary and secondary languages are clearly specifi ed by the Lithuanian- or Polish-speaking recipient. The transformations occurring in the Southern Aukštaitian dialect are aimed at unifi cation of the Sejny and Puńsk dialects in younger people’s speech and creation of a regiolect. Interference under a strong infl uence of the Polish language is noticeable at all levels of the primary language.

A standard belief as regards the conservation of architectural monuments in the 19thcentury is that the very idea of conservation was commonly accepted, while the monuments of the past were used to promote national identity. On the other hand, photography is also commonly considered a technology that was naturally predisposed to popularize those monuments and/or appropriate them as symbols. For those reasons, the photogrammetric documentation of some buildings from the region of Poznań, made by Albrecht Meydenbauer commissioned to do it by the Prussian government, could be classified as combination of conservation and nationalism, “typical” of the late 19thcentury. However, the author proposes another interpretation and claims that such events were not necessarily “realizations” of “widespread” ideas of identity building. Referring to the generative model of identity building developed by Friedrik Barth, she analyzes how specific situations and meanings were gradually generated through the interaction of actors who attempted to reach their goals and values by available means. The introduction and popularization of Meydenbauer’s invention is presented in the paper with reference to Bruno Latour’s research on the development and implementation of innovations in science. In such a context, photogrammetry turns out to have been a result of seeking support by business, i.e. the mobilization of resources, while the national discourse was used for that purpose as one of the available means.

The decision of the residents of the United Kingdom to leave the EU structures will certainly have not only serious economic consequences, but also political, social and cultural ones, both for the United Kingdom itself and for residents of countries that will stay in the European Union. While analysing the results of the referendum, which took place on 23rdJune 2016, it can be seen that the majority of voters in England and Wales voted in favour of leaving the European Union, while those in Scotland and Northern Ireland supported the United Kingdom remaining in the EU structures. The aim of the article is to explain why the majority of voters in Wales were in favour of the United Kingdom exit from the European Union and to indicate potential benefits or losses resulting from the decision taken.

The article deals with the role of patriotic songs in shaping national identity of the Polish. The discourse is divided into three matters. The first part is introductory and treats about the most essential issues and research problems, regarding the key topic. I attempt to answer the raised questions in the last part of the work. The middle part of a historical character presents crucial research assumptions, along with all the transformations that have taken place over the years, and have been influencing our comprehending of national songs and strengthening the feeling of national identity. The final part sums the discourse up and is critical to the key topic. I strive to foresee possible consequences of the described phenomena. I derive my conclusions from the analysis, presented in the second part of the article, and from my personal experience, which has been gained due to long years of participating and organizing patriotic concerts and performances.

Objective of this paper is to show the situation of Belarusian education from 1944 to 2016, i.e. in the times of rough and frequent politically motivated changes. It had negative impact on fate of schools with Belarusian teaching language, which are places of building national identity, sustaining seperate tradition, culture and language. In period from 1944 to late 80’s, Polish authorities had not developed particular strategy towards minority, thus their situation in PRL were unstable. As a result, initial growth of education nearly ended on completly liquidation in the 80’s. New chances for Polish Belarusians were creating with government transformation after 1989. Since this time situation of Belarusians and their education in Poland are stable.

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns the issue of constructing and reconstructing national identity. The object of interest here is a sociological case study of Serbian national identity. It includes reconstruction and interpretation of in-depth interviews conducted in Serbia with the representatives of Serbian symbolic elites. The concept of symbolic elites is approached in the discussed research from Teun van Dijk’s perspective. Thus, they are individuals and groups directly involved in the production of public opinion, who have an impact on the content of publicly available knowledge, and the creation and legitimization of public discourse. The work is embedded in the methodological framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and is based on the assumptions of the Discourse‐Historical Approach (DHA). In this optics, the most important thing is the historical and social context of the studied process of the discursive construction of national identity. Therefore, the conclusions also touch upon the historical, political, and social perspective of the formation of Serbian national identity. The reflection also aims at presenting the analysis from the contemporary perspective (mainly in 2008-2020). Thus, paying attention to the political divisions in Serbia and the country’s road to democratization and European integration, the discussed research study shows the comprehensive specifics of the studied national identity.

It was already in the Middle Ages that the lands of today’s Ukraine were the area of clashes between the East and the West, Rome and the Byzantine Empire. Those clashes were manifested in confessional discrepancies of Catholicism and Orthodoxy as well as the differences in sacral language. In Ukraine, similarly to the whole area of the Latin – Byzantine borderline, the decisive factor in the later ethnical processes was not the original tribal structure of those lands, but the scope of the Eastern Christianity influence. In the days of Kievan Rus’, the vast area of this country was home to the general attitude of “Russian” community, primarily understood as the community of Eastern Christianity followers. The remains of the “Russian peoples” community lasted long after the fall of Kievan Rus’. To some extent, its origins can be found until this day. In the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, emerges the identity of the “Russian nation”, separate from the Russians in the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the political, ideological, but also largely in the religious, cultural, and linguistic sense. However, it is not possible to observe separate Ukrainian and Belarussian ethnic groups in this area until the end of the XVI century. The Ruthenian ethnos was entirely separate from the Russian ethnos. The differentiation into the Ukrainian and Belarussian ethnos begins after the Union of Lublin, following which the Ukrainian lands become a part of the Crown, and the Belarussian lands remain a part of Lithuania. The political and cultural independence of Ukrainian lands is consolidated with the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the events that followed.

Iłłakowiczówna’s case seems particularly relevant in this respect since she lived in a multicultural environment and happened to approach several languages and cultures, and also because of the tensions she had to endure due to the dramatic events that occurred in Central Europe in the course of the century.

The paper aims at analyzing the importance of national identity in the selected works by Vladimir Sorokin and Viktor Pelevin. Both writers place significant emphasis on presenting the possible consequences of the present social changes. Pelevin predicts the unification of the world’s biggest countries into a homogenous structure based on people’s recognition. On the other hand, Sorokin forecasts the division of the present states into smaller structures, which will need to (re)construct their own identity. The interpretation is complemented with relevant ideas of Hegel and Fukuyama.

The concept of normalization was associated with the peace process with Israelis, in both, Arab and Palestinian context. The term has different interpretations depending on context, and it becomes more complex when referring to a direct relationship between the colonized and their colonizers in the context of the settler colonialism in Palestine, therefore, it is a highly controversial concept. The political debates over the concept, mostly describe it as a term that refers to recognizing the state of Israel and conducting normal relations with Israelis. The term ‘normalization’ has been used by Michel Foucault in describing the processes of psychological dominance imposed by an authority’s penal role in modern societies and its influence on human groups. One of the most prominent purposes of “Post-modern” theories is to resist the colonial dominant narratives by discovering the Scattered Historical Contingencies. Given this premise, this paper has the following objectives: To offer a critical, deconstructivist analysis for the concept of normalization in the context of the settler-colonial regime, and to study the genealogies of this concept (Généalogie) by investigating the relevant historical hypotheses: 1) there are historical differences regarding the appearance of the expression phonologically and its practice (political, official, and public practice); and 2) there are historical epistemological transformations that took place with regards to Arabs’ perceptions, and the political reflection, which shaped the image and the relationship with the colonizer, due to the practice of the concept normalization in politics. I will analyse these historical hypotheses by using a synthesis of settler colonial theoretical frameworks and those of socio-political psychology such as Frantz Fanon’s theoretical contributions, to investigate political discourse, including discourse in peace treaties, politics related to the Palestinian and Arab national identities, and the relevant political discourses used by politicians who reject normalization.

Lusatia from the inside – a society through the eyes of Sorbian teachers, artists and politicians. A short survey based on research conducted in Bautzen and the surrounding area in November 2011Lusatia is a region in the heart of Europe. The Sorbs – a West Slavic nation, people who have lived in Lusatia for more than 1000 years, is not one homogeneous nation, but is divided into Upper and Lower Sorbs, with two dissimilar languages, two religions and two mentalities. I decided to rediscover Lusatia and talk with the people who are Sorbs. A one month stay in Bautzen was possible thanks to financial and scientific support from the Sorbian Institute (Serbski institut / Sorbisches Institut). Examining the past and current situation of the people in Lower and Upper Lusatia, I focused on their language, history and culture. In my studies I did not want to show the external image of the Sorbs, I did not try to create it either. All I wanted was to find out from the Sorbs themselves from which ‘elements’ does their individual identity originate. I was also interested to discover if Sorbs, as the smallest Slavic nation without their own country, feel more connected to a Sorbian origin, or perhaps to German citizenship.

The Arab revolution has to be more than the overthrowing of dictators. Bennabi created the concept of Post- Almohad Man and its “Colonsability” – a tendency to be colonized which allows the aggressor to be transformed into the colonizer. Is Bennabi’s theory applicable to Iraq? Should killing a Post- Almohad Man be the aim, as Bennabi postulated, and only this will allow society to develop? Although Bennabi rather had in mind liberation from auto-stereotype and reconstruction of identity, many still interpret his words literally.

Data from Eurobarometer surveys and outcomes concluded from the semistructured interviews revealed that socialising with other Europeans strengthened European identity but contact with the host country remained limited. Diff erent from other studies, this paper also reveals that the national identity of the participants precisely empower as a result of coaction. Furthermore, for the fi rst time in the literature, semi-structured interviews unveiled that cultural differences such as stereotypes and prejudices have no negative eff ect in promoting European identity among students. Rather, it generates a positive impact for the awareness of national identity.

Aft er the disintegration of the USSR, nation states formed which until today struggle for value orientation and collective identities. Especially the Russian identity seems heterogeneous and partially correlating with in-group vs. out-group stereotypes. Th e question arises how historical media communications can shape values and identity in Russia. In particular the breach of civilization by the Holocaust, as central element of European memory culture, off ers manifold references. Guiding the research is the model of “Multidimensional-Imparting-of-History” (MIH) which includes empirical indices of (humanitarian) values, national identity as well as European and Asian identifi cation. A media eff ect experiment carried out with young Russian subjects (Moscow, 2012, N = 192) shows that the reception of a Holocaust documentary has limited humanizing eff ects. Identity-building was ambivalent. Apart from a partial increase in nationalistic attitudes, there was predominantly an increase in cosmopolitism. Th e fi ndings in Russia are compared with results of similar studies in Austria, Germany and Israel.

Based on their own questionnaire study the Authors are also trying to describe the way of perceiving this phenomenon: how much is it just an emotional bond with the homeland, country, state, region, city, society, and how much is it a practical action for the good of the country or local society? The article also includes the overview of different views on patriotism in the theoretical approach. The phenomenon of patriotism is being considered in the context of the wider issue: national/European identity, hierarchy of values or citizen activity.

The aim of this article is to analyse Witold Gombrowicz’s short story entitled “Pamiętnik Stefana Czarnieckiego” in the context of the convergence between the writer’s worldview and the philosophy of Michel Foucault. Nietzschean motifs inspired both authors to formulate a similar constructivist anthropology and a similar criticism of the concept of discipline. The themes of form and creating a human being by a human being – central to Gombrowicz’s writing – correspond to Foucault’s notion of the production of the subject. In such a perspective, “Pamiętnik Stefana Czarnieckiego” can be read as a record of the experience of an individual subjected to social practices of disciplinary embarrassment, aimed at producing a subject defined by nationality and heteronormativity, as well as the experience of rebellion against an imposed identity. Such a reading reveals the political stakes of the literary output by the author of Ferdydurke: expressed in the deconstruction of authoritarian forms of empowerment and in the pursuit to replace them with forms of subjectification based on irony, fluidity and distance.

He approached him as if he was a Swede, they both had a similar worldview, but his approach changed when the subject of conversation became the history of Sri Lanka. Arnstberg felt as if his interlocutor was so rooted in the past that the past, not the present created who he is now. The author of the text notices a parallel linking this situation with how the national consciousness of the Swedes was described at the beginning of the previous century by Selma Lagerlöf and Verner von Heidenstam. However, he notices certain regularity that “when the history of Sweden is written in a scientific and objective way, with a keen pursuit of truth, it is not only the history of Sweden that loses its social grounding, but it is also much harder to build a national identity on it”. What affects most the nation are fantastic heroes and fantastic events. Arnstberg emphasizes that he does not need his country’s history to build his identity. He refers to Peter Englund, a member of the Swedish Academy, who on the one hand wrote that ignorance of history may cause a lack of sense and identity, and on the other hand, he believed that historical events and heroes should not be used as justification for nationalism. His interpretation of Englund’s words includes two approaches to history. The first – modernist, which does not look at history in the identity context, and the second – nationalist, according to which knowledge of history is important for a sense of community with the rest of the nation. Further, the author of the text analyzes the concept of Swedishness, referring to the articles of other researchers. The examples he gives more blur the term than allow us to understand what it really means. He demonstrates, on the basis of nationalism, the paradoxes of Swedishness and even undermines its existence.

The need to redefi ne Australia has been particularly urgent in the recent two decades when the image of this antipodean society as almost a model multicultural one, craving for freedom and tolerance, was demolished by growing intolerance and nationalisms. In today’s world, torn by confl icts of interests, racial hatred and social divisions, the nineteenth-century concept of a nation and national ideology, which only apparently faded away in the era of the late twentieth-century globalisation, is now being given a new prominence not just by minor politicians who want to win the favour of their electorates but by surprisingly large sections of democratic, egalitarian societies as Australia and New Zealand.

Opis:
What future for Belarus? An analysis of identity issuesThe present article discusses various types of Belarusian collective identity and analyses their potential to make Belarus an empowered, fully independent, democratic and economically efficient society, nation and state with a stable position on the political map of Europe. The study is based mainly on sociological surveys collected by IISEPS, an independent Belarusian research institute. These data reveal weak points of Belarusian national identity (including a low level of historical awareness), a residue of the Soviet system of values and attitudes, as well as a considerable degree of Russification of the society. Although Belarusians have become used to having their own state (which, however, they treat mainly in terms of a nationwide welfare institution), they have retained a strong sense of local and regional identity. Social attitudes, both on an individual and community level, are clearly dominated by economic rather than ideological motivation. Eastern, pro-Russian orientation is far more widespread than pro-European attitudes, especially when more than only verbal support is involved. The text also points out symptoms of consolidating Belarusian collective identity, even if its post-Soviet/West Russian pattern still prevails over pro-European and pro-national orientation of the occidental type. Belarusian society is specific, which makes it difficult to analyze in terms of standard categories. The article demonstrates why identity issues limit the potential for any rapid significant political change in Belarusian society. Artykuł pokazuje tożsamościowe ograniczenia możliwości zaistnienia istotnych, szybkich i głębokich zmian politycznych w społeczeństwie białoruskim.

Many polish people perceive differences between the cultures and societies of the Western and Eastern Europe. For years Ukrainians were described in entirely pejorative terms, because of difficult relationships between Poland and Ukrainian Insurgent Army during the Second World War. The purpose of this article is to describe the basic terms of sociology such as nation, collective consciousness, national stereotypes, national identity, and the role and influence of the negative stereotypes on the image of Ukrainians in polish society. Polish people believe that their social values are in sharp contrast to the Ukrainians ones, but this negative perspective was abandoned after Orange revolution and revolution in 2014. The reports and analysis of the attitudes of public opinion emphasize that the Polish public have changed their opinion towards Ukrainians.

The article presents the results of a research on Polish national identity among people applying for the Polish National Card in Minsk, Belarus. The research project covered 125 persons who between March and the end of July 2013 had completed a course preparing them for an interview with the Consul of the Republic of Poland in order to obtain the Polish National Card. The research was to evaluate the traditional, ethnic criteria of the national bond, which largely overlap with the criteria required to be met by applicants for the Pole’s Card according to the Act on Pole’s Card of 7 September 2007. The results of the research suggest poor internalisation of the criteria of traditional national identity among the respondents.

In this text, I show how Polish–German relations were depicted in the educational discourse. I analyse post-war Polish programmes and curricula, paying special attention to those from the second half of the 1940s, as they are the clearest example of how the way that the image of our Western neighbour was presented fit the ideological line imposed by the government at the time. I am interested in the then-current selection of topics and the prescribed reading, as well as in the accompanying didactical commentary which, in the first few curricula, takes the form of ideologised briefings. I also underline the way that schools were intertwined in the legitimation processes, which benefited the government’s interests. Of special interest to me is the identity project forming part of education, especially the model of Polish patriotism which was built over the figure of “the enemy” – which is also apparent in today’s form of patriotism.

The article presents the findings of a pilot study on the ways of negotiating national identity within the Polish community (Polonia) in the American city of Cleveland. The study showed the complex ways of maintaining and building cultural boundaries (and thus constructing collective identity) by the Polish diaspora in the situation of unequal power relations with the host society, but also within Polonia itself. These practices are conducted not only in opposition to the American society but also to members of their ethnic group, as a result of which there are simultaneous processes of strengthening and weakening diasporic ties, including and excluding individual members and groups. These processes are being reinforced by the existence of multifaceted divisions within this community (generational, social class-based, spatial, and political), which shape its condition and the patterns of its members’ participation.

The following article is the outcome of more than 10 years of study of the works of the little-known Polish composer Otton Mieczysław Żukowski (1867–1942). During those ten years, many of his unknown songs, kept mainly in the private records of the composer’s granddaughter and in the Lviv National Scientific Library, were collected. Also, the authorship of other of Żukowski’s songs was established, while in other cases it was possible to question this authorship. Furthermore, based on the national documents, the correct date of the composer’s death was revealed to the public, correcting the wrong date given by various dictionaries and encyclopedias. The article is the first attempt at an organized presentation of the musical as well as publishing work of Otton Mieczysław Żukowski, according to the author’s knowledge as of 2018.

I argue for amazing values of the tradition of romanticism. I pay attention to connections between this tradition and the present. I write about necessary changes in reading romantic literature at school. In my point of view the most important is not to talk only about national values. It is really necessary in Poland. We must not continue to think that patriotism means only fighting with other people. Forming students’ national identity is one of the main duties at school but the romantic way of understanding patriotism has to be changed. It is very dangerous in our century. Many researchers also write about it. It is a very important problem of literary studies. I also present suggestions to work with Reduta Ordona in primary school and in junior high school. There are different ideas presented in methodical literature as well as my own suggestions.

The rise and continuance of a nation and a state requires the systematic work of educating every generation. This role should be played by civic education, which starts in the parental home, and continues at school, but which is also the task of the authorities. True civic education is free from politics and ideology. An important role in civic education is played by symbols which express the duties of every citizen towards the nation and the state. National symbols, which strengthen the sense of citizenship, should inform daily life, and the authorities should carry out a policy of education through symbols which denote the culture, traditions, customs, and history of a given nation.

The ’double identity’ dilemma was visible especially during devolution referendums voting in 1979, 1997 and 2011 when non–political motives were often much more determinative then the factor of belonging to the Welsh community in political meaning. Thus, answering to the question about devolution referendum role in shaping political dimension of Welshness requires thoroughly analyse of the mentioned referendums results as an evident figures of public support for establishing legal and institutional guarantees of maintaining and developing all aspects of national identity. The paper deals with the formation of a new national identity in Belarus under conditions of post-Soviet transformation. Under the term of "national identity" the author means the identity of the population of the Republic of Belarus that will be adequate to its status of a newly independent state acquired after 1991. Special attention is paid to the existing major research approaches to the problem of constructing this national identity. According to the author's view, both major approaches are inadequate; the author puts forward a new (third) approach that goes beyond discussions on language and national culture, and corresponds to the concept of plurality of identities. The author describes some paradoxes of national identity based on the opposition of "nation" and "people". These correspond to the Western model of the "creation of modern nations", which is not fully applicable to post-Soviet Belarus. All attempts to apply this model to contemporary Belarus lead scholars to several "cultural paradoxes" that can, however, be explained within a new approach.

Findings: The results show that state identities in Western European countries are well-developed. Central/Eastern European societies are characterised by lower levels of state identity than Western European ones. We attribute this phenomenon to legacies of the past, especially the to many centuries of economic underdevelopment of the region that was enhanced increased by communism and low levels of social capital in Eastern European societies. Contribution: This study links the state identity of citizens of European countries with their living conditions and past legacies.

In this dystopian fiction Sorokin depicts Russia in the third decade of the 21st century as a place where technological progress meets a return to the ancient social order, encapsulated in the system of state controlled terror called the Oprichnina. Sorokin exploits that vision to reflect upon the Oprichnina as a diabolical constant relapsing in deceptively different costumes throughout centuries of Russian history. Indeed, in various press interviews the Russian novelist asserts that the Oprichnina constitutes the very foundation of the Russian national identity.

The purpose of this article is to present how the French in Canada preserved their cultural and linguistic identity and distinguished themselves from the English in North America which none of the European colonies at the time, not even socially and economically wellorganized New Netherland were able to maintain their independence. Francophones also managed to prove that nowadays the French play the indispensable and dominant role in building Canada’s identity. Today the provinces can have their own language program providing it complies with the federal policy of bilingualism. In 1976 during Révolution tranquille Quebec passed Loi 101 where French is declared its sole official language. Therefore the province introduced the language policy which was contrary to the Canadian constitution. These are the most important differences that set Canada apart from the United States. This also explains complex nature of Canadian language policies based on equal status of the two official languages in the institutions of the Parliament and government of Canada and also both successful and unsuccessful attempts to establish language policy in the Canadian provinces.

Opis:
Global ecumene of pop nationalismThe aim of the article is to examine the contemporary phenomenon of pop nationalism, understood as a special form of ethno-nationalist emotions and attitudes which are clearly visible in the realm of sports competition. The author points to paradoxes hiding behind the globalization, professionalization and market orientation of this domain. The so-called hegemonic disciplines of sports (such as football, hockey, basket ball) are now – despite the cosmopolitan orientation of sports competition – the main source of national identification, seen as unique “wars of nations in a time of peace.” The more global sport is made, the more national identity is emphasized as an indispensable component of the logic of such a competition. In the essay, the author aims to reconstruct ways of creating a similar global ecumene of pop nationalism, as well as to analyze various specific situations and symbolic forms in which people create their own national identities, for example those that accompanied the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship (commonly referred to as Euro 2012), hosted for the first time by Poland and Ukraine.

Opis:
The article deals with the issue of the relationship between the Church and politics, honing in on specific elements of Polish thinking concerning the security of the Polish nation, namely the contribution of Christian thought, the Church’s concern for independence and the sovereignty of Poland. In Poland, attempts to ring-fence the spheres of religion and politics, on the grounds of being at opposite poles, prove a threat to national security. The Church from the beginning of the Polish state has participated in the processes of creating national security, especially in the ideological aspect, by shaping national identity, patriotic attitudes, promoting national history and systematic encouragement to engage for the common good.

Opis:
The novel The Town of Fish (Рыбiн горад, 2007) by Natalia Babina is an extraordinary work within contemporary Belarusian literature due to both its content and formal characteristics. It is an eclectic text, which includes elements of the action and detective novel, fantasy, the novel of manners, and even the reportage. The story of the main character is a mere pretext for contemplating some aspects and condition of modern Belarus as well as identity issues of its inhabitants (especially from the borderland). In this context, Babina’s novel, despite its fantastic and entertaining layers, is a significant voice in the discussion concerning the dimensions of modern multiculturalism devoid of “divisions into majorities and minorities, the familiar and the other, the better and the worse”.
