Artykuł omawia koncepcję „presji moralnej”, wypracowaną przez Norwida w okresie powstania styczniowego. Presja moralna stanowić miała główny oręż w ramach postulowanej przez poetę walki ideowej. Norwid poddawał bowiem ostrej krytyce jednostronne oparcie się Polaków na walce zbrojnej, przy całkowitym (jak twierdził) zaniedbaniu walki ideowej. Presja moralna stanowić miała rodzaj systemowego i wieloaspektowego propagandowego oddziaływania na Rosję i Europę w celu uświadomienia, że jakikolwiek postęp w kierunku demokratyzacji Rosji odbywa się za polskim pośrednictwem, przy czym tragizm polskiego położenia polega na tym, że jest to z reguły pośrednictwo oparte na polskiej ofierze, pogwałceniu praw Polaków. Autor artykułu omawia w perspektywie diachronicznej kształtowanie się tej koncepcji i jej ukryte, niedostrzeżone przez Norwida, paradoksy.
This article discusses the concept of “moral pressure”, developed by Norwid during the January Uprising. Moral pressure was to constitute the main weapon in the ideological struggle postulated by the poet. Norwid strongly criticised the unilateral reliance of Poles on armed struggle, while utterly (as he claimed) neglecting the ideological struggle. Moral pressure was to constitute a kind of systemic and multifaceted propaganda-like influence on Russia and Europe in order to make them realise that any progress towards the democratisation of Russia takes place through Polish mediation. However, the tragedy of the Polish situation is that this mediation usually involves Polish sacrifice and the violation of Polish rights. The article presents a diachronic perspective on the formation of this concept and its hidden paradoxes that remained unnoticed by Norwid.

Memorial sites pedagogy emphasizes the importance of historical-political education which, in turn, assumes that students, for example, should visit the museums of former Nazi concentration camps. It combines the acquisition of historical knowledge of WW II with self-development and the teaching of socially desirable attitudes, mostly by means of methods subsumed under non-formal education. With the help of memorial sites pedagogy, students can learn how to be tolerant and how to foster anti-discrimination acts. The method also offers a possibility to reinforce the pro-democratic attitudes.

How is the memory of the Holocaust and Auschwitz seen today among young Poles and Germans, is it different from that of the past? What are the differences in the memory space and education about the Holocaust between the two countries, and what do they have in common? The article is ba- sed on three pillars, and what served as foundations for them was a survey conducted with Polish and German youth in late April and May 2013, imme- diately after their visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau. The first part concerns the individual and family memory of young people from Poland and Germany, who came to the Memorial and Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau (MMA-B); there are also issues related to the intergenerational transmission of war fate of the relatives. The second pillar takes on teaching about the Holocaust at school and the evaluation of historical education from the student’s point of view. There are presented the opinions of many historians, teachers and edu- cators struggling with the effects of the reform of history teaching. The third and most extensive part of the article presents the issues related to historical education in the memorial site and young people confronting their past expe- rience, knowledge, notions with the authenticity of MMA-B. Fundamental questions has been raised about the sense of maintaining authenticity of the memorial site and the reason that makes the memory of the Holocaust such an important task for future generations.

Opis:
YouTube is the largest video sharing site live at the moment. It has been used to communicate a vast array of information, while it allows for user-generated content. This paper will focus on YouTube videos that communicate death, and in particular will present findings from a preliminary study undertaken by the authors considering the role that background music plays in these videos. Specifically, this study explores the experiences of the viewers of death-related YouTube videos with and without background music while it makes comparisons in relation to the impact that music has on the viewers’ emotional experiences. We conclude that background music elicits emotions and enhances feelings of sadness and sympathy in relation to the visual content of videos while recommendations for future research are made.

The article addresses artes memoriae perceived as documentary traces of a spatial project which has slipped to oblivion, namely Une Cité Industrielle by Tony Garnier from 1917, redefined by Cité de Création in the context of urban housing. The movement, revolving around modern philosophies of urban planning and launched at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries assumed elimination of private property, equality of the working class and division into zones. It also restored the concept of the relations between nature, history of the inhabitants,industrial and historical development of Viollet-Le-Duc functionality and locality. A contemporary cluster of murals creates a mosaic of historical memorial spaces and contributes to Lyon’s development in a new form.

The challenges of Holocaust instruction and remembrance - Particular and universal aspects in formal and informal interdisciplinary curricula in Israel and abroadThe present article examines Holocaust instruction in Israel and in France, addressing formal and informal aspects of teaching practices. Specifically, the article examines whether Holocaust instruction constitutes a unifying factor that stresses what is common to human beings, among adolescents at schools in Israel and abroad, or whether it is a continuation of the methodic axis of the general model of the school and its credo. The study was conducted as part of a large-scale project evaluating 20 years of journeys to Poland by Israeli youth. It is based on a qualitative research apporoach that included analysis of interviews with policymakers, representatives of Holocaust institutes and foundations, teachers, students and guides. It also made use of field observations and official documents. The qualitative analysis revealed that that the dominant didactic models in Israel and France differ from one another in the importance that they attribute to universal versus the particular elements. Each of the models was built based on a didactic foundation of educational and teaching activity at the school in general, and Holocaust instruction in particular. The study findings indicate that in general, the Holocaust instruction in Israel continues to emphasize the particular. It serves as a tool for strengthening the unique values of the event, and stresses Israeliness, Zionism, and Jewishness. The climax of the modal is an eight-day journey to Poland, centering on a visit to Auschwitz. In contrast, Holocaust instruction in France emphasizes the universal. The curriculum positions the journey as the climax of the scholastic experience but, unlike the Israeli curriculum, it emphasizes the historical and universal aspects of the Holocaust and represses the singularity of the event in the context of the Jewish people. A comparison of the two countries underlines the substantive differences separating the two different educational systems, which have adopted different sets of values.

My paper will focus on the Italian memorial trains to Auschwitz, which have become a very popular phenomenon, still unparalleled in Europe. Namely, I will argue that they are an example of deterioration of Holocaust teaching by analyzing the three key following aspects: 1) Is the primary goal of this initiative teaching history or promoting moral education? Believing that a site visit is enough to generate a meaningful civilizing impact on the visitors means trivializing Auschwitz. On the one hand, the preparatory work for a trip there cannot include the teaching of the Holocaust in its full complexity. On the other hand, any content selection will obviously influence the students’ historical perception. 2) Both pedagogy and methodology would need more accuracy because most teachers taking part in these projects tend to have a passive attitude arising from their choice to leave their educational responsibility in the hands of the organizers, therefore renouncing to coordinate by themselves the learning process of their students. 3) The use of an unsuitable language not only results from a lack of precision in defining the historical facts (mixing of political deportation, forced labour and extermination of the Jews) but also leads to a universally moralizing effect of the Holocaust. In particular, the use of a too general vocabulary (including terms like: human beings, victims, innocent people) risks overlooking and minimizing the specificity of the genocide. Such a language prevents students from understanding that the Holocaust victims were the Jews and that they were murdered just because they were born Jews. Given the great success of the memorial trains initiative and its strong connection with the teaching of history, it is essential to consider how teachers respond to the major challenge they are faced with: combining good history teaching with the moral lesson of Auschwitz.

The article presents issues of tourism development in Oświęcim – a town that remains in the shadow of the former genocide site of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp. The authors’ aim is to present the results of research on the image of the town, as well as activities leading to a change of the unfavourable image of Oświęcim: “a town overshadowed by a museum”. They are included in “The Strategy for Tourism Development in Oświęcim, 2018-2030”, developed with the support of the authors of this article. The paper also presents an analysis of tourism development and tourist assets with respect to using them to create a supplementary offer for tourists visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

Miejsce pamięci nie jest li tylko topograficznym odniesieniem, czy alokacją pamięci zdarzenia jakie się kiedyś i gdzieś wydarzyło. Ze społecznym, a nie topograficznym odniesieniem związana jest pamięć, która może być sprawą osobistych doznań, czy grupowych - społecznych uczuć. Okazuje się, że pamięć może być przekazem niewiążącym się z samym miejscem lecz jego symboliką, kiedy to nazwy, wybrane fragmenty pamięci, inne dokumenty i formy prezentacji, tworzą pamięć i tym samym wzmacniają odbiór miejsca pamięci. Mówimy o post pamięci jako pokoleniowym przekazem traumy. Na pamięć i miejsce pamięci można spojrzeć z perspektywy odbiorcy nie mającego relacji z taką pamięcią czy miejscem. Jego odniesienia nie zawsze mogą być właściwą interpretacją. Miejsce pamięci to również pamięć zbrodni bez odniesienia do konkretnego miejsca czy osób. Zakwestionować tutaj można określenie Pierra Nora, iż KL Auschwitz wśród europejskich miejsc pamięci jest miejscem symbolicznym. Zbrodnia Holocaustu, gdzie Auschwitz jest jedynie jednym z wielu różnorakich miejsc w przestrzeni pamięci winno wiązać się z jego określeniem jako miejsca fundacyjnego. Nadało ono nie tylko mieszkańcom Europy lecz większości świata trwałe kulturowe odniesienie. Dla Polaków Sybir, Wołyń, czy lasek lub dół gdzieś za miastem, czy wsią to nie mniej ważne miejsca pamięci. Te miejsca i ta pamięć konstytuują nasze społeczeństwo. Rolą konserwatora zabytków nie jest tylko sprawowanie opieki nad miejscem uznanym za zabytek, lecz bycie świadomym pamięci, która przenika przez nas i tworzy różne przestrzenie oddziaływania.
Cultural Heritage consits among others of historic monuments and memorial places or sites. They honors both the material evidence and peoples testimony being of non material character. Its presentation in a proper manner should consider not only inclussion of a vast documentary materials as museal collection, but also create specific forms of their interpretation and presentation. Traveling to shear diffent areas of man’s perception and intelectual interest can be creative and helpful in building the Memory of historic sites.

Tematem artykułu jest projekt koncepcyjny Ogrodu Pamięci na terenie dawnego cmentarza żydowskiego, znajdującego się na pograniczu dzielnic Ponikwoda i Kalinowszczyzna w Lublinie. Obszar opracowania obejmuje nieogrodzoną, pozbawioną nagrobków część dawnego cmentarza żydowskiego, która obecnie stanowi dla mieszkańców pobliskich zabudowań namiastkę parku z ubogą infrastrukturą i roślinnością. Założeniem pracy było pogodzenie sprzecznych funkcji terenu poprzez stworzenie bardzo potrzebnego w tym rejonie parku, a jednocześnie zapewnienie odpowiedniego szacunku dla przeszłości miejsca. Zasadniczą część pracy stanowi projekt koncepcyjny Ogrodu Pamięci, w efekcie zaprojektowania którego teren zyskał ład przestrzenny, a roślinność poprzez zaplanowaną zmienność pojawów fenologicznych nabrała również symbolicznego znaczenia, dzięki przypisaniu każdej porze roku pewnego okresu z historii lubelskich Żydów.
The subject of the project is a conceptual design for a Memorial Garden on the site of the former Jewish cemetery, located on the area joining the Ponikwoda and Kalinowszczyzna districts in Lublin. The area covered by the project is an unfenced part of the former Jewish cemetery, without tombstones, which now serves as an ersatz park for residents of nearby buildings, with poor infrastructure and vegetation. The premise of the work was to reconcile the contradictory functions of the site by creating a much-needed park in the area while at the same time ensuring appropriate respect for the history of the site. The core of the work is the conceptual design of the Memorial Garden, owing to which the area will gain spatial order, while through the planned variation of phenological phenomena the vegetation will acquire symbolic meaning, as each season will be associated with a particular period in the history of Lublin Jews.

Janusz I Starszy (ok.1346-1429), był jednym z najwybitniejszych książąt mazowieckich, o bardzo do-brej opinii zawartej w Kronice Jana Długosza. Dlatego też władze samorządowe, szukając lokalnej postaci historycznej godnej upamiętnienia, decydują się czasami na księcia Janusza Starszego. Ważne miejsce upamiętnienia znajduje się w krypcie pod Archikatedrą św. Jana w Warszawie, w po-staci sarkofagu z napisem: „Książęta mazowieccy Janusz Starszy, Bolesław III”. Poza tym Garwolin upamiętnił księcia Janusza, stawiając pomnik. W mieście tym znajduje się także ulica księcia Janusza, podobnie jak w Ciechanowie, Kolnie, Łomży, Małym Płocku, Przasnyszu, So-chaczewie i Warszawie, a w Ostrołęce – rondo. Władca ten jest również patronem dwóch szkół: w Górze Kalwarii i Łomży, a także Hufca ZHP Warszawa-Centrum. Pewną formą upamiętnienia księcia Janusza Starszego są przedstawienia malarskie, wykonane współcześnie na budynkach w Czersku i Górze Kalwarii. Książę jest także upamiętniany w inscenizacjach historycznych i grach fabularnych. Biorąc pod uwagę różnorodność upamiętnień, można sądzić, że ta postać historyczna powinna być powszechnie znana. Żeby to sprawdzić w drugiej połowie 2016 roku zostały przeprowadzone badania ankietowe. Objęły one 9 miast, leżących niegdyś w granicach państwa księcia Janusza. Responden-tami były osoby pełnoletnie, urodzone i mieszkające na Mazowszu. Wyniki badań nie są optymistyczne. Spośród 100 respondentów tylko trzech wiedziało o jakiejś formie upamiętnienia tego władcy, a dziewięciu znało tę postać z innych źródeł, związanych w dużej mierze z zamkami, których twórcą lub gospodarzem był właśnie książę Janusz Starszy.
Janusz I the Old (about 1346-1429), is one of the most distinguished dukes of Mazovia. He has a very good opinion in the Chronicle of Jan Długosz. This is the main reason, why local authorities decide on Duke Janusz I the Old, when they are looking for a local, historical figure for commemoration. The crypt of St. John’s Archicathedral in Warsaw is important place of commemoration. There is a sarcophagus with the inscription: Dukes of Mazovia Janusz I the Old (and) Bolesław III. Garwolin also commemorated him. There is Janusz I the Old Monument. Besides that, in the town has been located Janusz I the Old Street, as in the other towns: Ciechanów, Kolno, Łomża, Mały Płock, Przasnysz, Sochaczew and Warsaw. Ostrołęka has Janusz I the Old Roundabout. Two schools: in Góra Kalwaria and Łomża, as well as Warsaw Centrum District of Polish Scauting and Guiding Association, have used the name of Duke Janusz I the Old. A certain form of commemoration are modern paintings representing Duke Janusz I the Old. They have been made on the walls of buildings in Czersk and Góra Kalwaria. The Duke is also commemorated in historical re-enactment and role-playing games. Taking into consideration the diversity of commemorations, it can be assumed that this historical figure should be widely known. Questionnaire surveys have been conducted during the second half of 2016 years, in order to verify this knowledge. For the research purpose were selected 9 cities, which had been located within the borders of Duke Janusz I the Old state. The respondents were only adults, born and currently living in Mazovia. The results of the research are not optimistic. Among the 100 respondents, only three of them knew something about commemoration of Duke Janusz I the Old. Nine respondents knew about the Duke from other sources mostly associated with the castles, built or rebuilt by Janusz I the Old.
