Opis:
This paper presents the theoretical and methodological analysis of mediatization understood as (1) the process of social transformation effected by media changes, and interrelated with other social processes, (2) and as the area of studies. Mediatization seems to be one of the most stable, capacious, and significant concept in last twenty years. Its influence on sociology, media and communication studies, and cultural studies, is substantial and followed by strong critique. Hence, the main goal of this paper is an up-to-date analysis of mediatization from theoretical and methodological perspectives. In three consecutive parts I analyse the historical phases, dominant theoretical and research perspectives, and methodological perceptions of mediatization. In this inquiry I argue that: (1) historical and spatial mediatization studies need to be developed in more complex way; (2) from dominant mediatization perspectives the institutional approach is one of the most theoretically and methodologically elaborated, (3) mediatization is in pre-paradigm phase in terms of scientific evolution, (4) critical mediatization studies should emerge, since mediatization analyses tend to neglect the economy as an important part of transformation processes.

The demographic changes taking place in the most developed countries in Europe show a dynamic process of aging societies. Seniors (i.e. according to WHO, people over 65 years of age) are sometimes affected due to the limiting conditions of constantly progressing social changes. One of the most significant transformations is the presence of media in the everyday life of individuals. Development of technology and media communication lead to the spread of the mediatization of social reality. Many media recipients build their idea of the world based on what they learn from the mass media. It then influences their understanding of themselves and their role in the world. The purpose of this article is to analyse mediatization as a social process and to explain how it affects older people's experience of the media.

The mediatization by afflicatization. Mobile hybridization, multitasking and sharingThe aim of the article is to answer the question about the nature of the mediatization of everyday life which occurs through mobile media: smartphones and tablets and dedicated applications. Many spheres of peoples lives is subject to mobile mediatization and its regimes. Handheld devices accompany the increasingly wider spectrum of our activity. At the same time different activities intersect, overlap, and therefore hybridizes. It leads to a situation in which it is difficult to separate them from each other. Crossing applications (e.g. through their functionality or content) support this situation. The mediatization takes place through applicatization of everyday life. It can be analyzed using the concepts of textures and regimes of mediatization formulated by André Jansson. Selected areas of everyday human activity was tested using this tool. At the same time three textures of applicatized mobile communication, corresponding to different regimes: hybridization, multi-tasking and sharing were isolated and analyzed. The context of commercialization was included and a critical picture of the phenomena was highlighted.

The study focuses on the question of the mediatized constitution of subject and subjectivity, which, surprisingly, has received little attention so far. The analytical reference to the mediatization approach enables a holistic understanding of subject, communication and media. Using the empirical example of the media (sub)culture of retro games, this article empirically examines the extent to which computer gamers are influenced by the spaces of experiences of games, not only in the moment of playing them, but also in the long term, with regard to their personal development and social community. The findings illustrate two dimensions of subjectivation processes: on the one hand, the reflective handling of computer games and thus subjectivation through games and game contexts, on the other hand, the nostalgic recollection of specific games and game contexts, which can be clearly separated analytically from the first dimension.

The article proposes a theoretical reflection on the nature of religious memory in socio-cultural concepts. Then, an example of the year 2016 was presented, when the anniversary of the baptism of Poland was celebrated. Memory can be varied and depends on the perception of the past by a given religious line. However, it is an integral part of the doctrine of monotheistic religion, including Christianity. At the same time, in the modern world, it is influenced by the processes of secularization and mediatization. The main thesis of the text is that religious memory has an aporetic nature, and therefore contradictory and paradoxical, because it contains other stories about the past.

moral discourses of mediatization, mediasphere, mediatization, new media, media studies, media ethics, information society
Opis:
Moral discourses of mediatizationThe issues of moral order in a globalized communication world have special significance. The participation of the media in shaping it remains undisputed. Mediatization paradoxes perceived in the media oppression with their coincident positive valorization (information and knowledge, entertainment and fun) make the issue of demonstrating its complexity problematic. They are, after all, public service media, whose patterns are directly reflected in the practiced morality. The question whether/how it is possible to care about values in the mediasphere is a guiding principle of this reflection. In search of possible topics of its penetration I address the sender – receiver relation, reaching to the determinants which shape moral attitudes. In an attempt to define and expose them I concentrate on the issue of responsibility, in my opinion a primary category, whose optics allows us to determine the area of desired values, both individual and community ones. Built as a result of critical thinking and collectivization of knowledge it helps to shape moral sensibility. Analyzing the attitude of the journalist arising from their role I place the problem of axiological consequences in individual and social dimensions. I note that ethical reflection understood as a reflection on what we are doing, as a result of understanding the moral qualifications adopted in the interaction, leading to the formation of self-knowledge, enables shaping oneself as a moral entity. It opens areas of social solidarity and cooperation, expressed in the commitment and care by “being for”. The background of the article is a brief characteristics of mediatized reality based on selected sociophilosophical and communicological diagnoses (eg. Bauman, Beck, Bourdieu and Sloterdijk) supplemented with the ideas of Rorty and MacIntyre. The analyses of mediasphere by Vattimo and Castells constitute an important system of references. They are completed by a generalized description of the continually modified media offer, in which the receiver – the user and creator of the media at the same time, exposes his targeted or imposed choices. In such an organized narrative the sender is being examined through the prism of journalistic duties and their possible execution significantly determining certain interpretations of the proposed messages.

Opis:
Nowadays, death has become a taboo. People usually die in sterile conditions of hospitals or hospices. Death is commonly not accepted, it is treated as a phenomenon so improper that it had better not even be discussed. People who lose their closest ones can rely on support from people around them less and less, due to loosening of social bonds and the individual anonymity in big cities. As a result, mourning is being experienced in isolation or, at best, within the few members of the closest family, which hinders the process of overcoming the pain and accepting the loss. The purpose of this article is to bring attention not only to the problems of those who have lost their family members, but also to the mediatization of death from the social point of view and its ethical aspect. Paradoxically, the more of a taboo death is considered in day-to-day life, the more reverse a process can be observed in media. Displaying the mourning within the Internet is a relatively new phenomenon and expresses the need to go back to experiencing death collectively. The presentation of death in the Internet frequently is aimed at shocking, interesting or to some extent entertaining the audience. There is a positive side to presenting death in media, too, which enables the switch from old rituals to new ones, getting acquainted with the occurrence of death, sympathizing with the mourners or the deceased, and showing support.

In this article the author indicates the necessity of application of transmedia perspective in mediatization research. He understands mediatization research as a kind of analysis that investigatesthe interrelation between the change of media and communication on the one hand and culture and society on the other, refl ecting the transforming role of media within this interrelation. The author emphasises that the idea of communicative fi gurations makes a mediatization research in a transmedia perspective possible. Communicative figurations are patterns of processes of communicative interweaving that exist across various media and have a “frame” that orients communicative action and therefore the sense-making practices of this figuration.

Faith and religious commitment endure as the distinguishing features of Poles when compared with other countries in Europe. However, these traits also been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Due to the limitations that accompanied Poles as the pandemic unfolded, traditional participation in religious practices could not always match the same scale and extent from before the pandemic. Consequently, some discontinued or reduced their religious involvement, while others would look for alternative forms of participation in religious practices, e.g. via radio, television or the Internet. Based on the results of quantitative research (CAWI) carried out using an online panel during the second (N = 1,072) and third wave of the pandemic (N = 1,080), the paper sets out to answer the following questions: (1) how has the religiosity of Poles changed during the pandemic?; (2) have Poles participated in religious practices via television, radio and internet?; (3) do Poles treat television, radio and online religious practices as an alternative to traditional religiosity?

Opis:
The thesis of this paper applies to the mediatization of politics process during American presidential campaign of 2008. It is entrenched in the theory of political communication. Because of the primary assumptions in the analysis below, political communication is considered mainly from perspective of the models of relations between the mass media and politics, which are treated as systems. It is justified because those relations influence the abovementioned systems and play the biggest role in affecting mass society and culture. In this thesis, the public is considered as having less influence on entire process of political communication. In order to clarify the subject of the research, the division into structural and functional mediatization was created. Structural mediatization, which is the main subject of the analysis, occurs when structures of the media and political systems come into dependence and subordination relation. Parts of the media system dominate over the analogical elements in the political system, internalizing media logic. Individual elements of the political world comply to the media logic and the media orders. Subjects of the political system implement political marketing methods to use the dominant role of the media in the process. Functional mediatization can be defined as a transfer of systemic relations at the smallest possible level – specific case in micro scale, when the medium controls a political actor. Here, the mediatization takes its most radical form. The medium on every stage of constructing the political reality can manipulate and deform a media political reality

Reality mediatization is at present one of the most powerful processes which means new media influence almost all areas of individual and social life, including religious life as well. New media are very effective in occupying time and space and cause great transformation of one's life. Areas which are not unaffected by media influence include also education and religion which in particular way meet during catechesis where we do care about its effectiveness because it conditions one's happiness both earthly and eternal. Didactics is a great art and care about better and more effective teaching-learning process, also in catechesis. Today, in my view, this didactics must be convergent that is combine elements of good, traditional didactics with sensible use of new media which can raise the effectiveness of the process. Such didactics, also in catechesis, should make good use of media because pupils themselves are highly mediatized and thanks to convergent didactics we may address a contemporary man to make him better and happier and eventually, what is the most important aim of catechesis, help him to be redeemed.

Mediatization is a process that is interesting to a researcher and political scientist for at least two important reasons. On the one hand, it becomes the area of scientific researches, inspirations and reflections, as it encourages to observe the changing frameworks, within which the political entities function, as well as the instruments and means used by them to complete tasks and achieve goals. However, on the other hand, mediatization is also a process which has impact on scientific environments, including also the community of political scientists, which seems to be a particularly interesting collective entity. This environment not only observes and describes the reality of mediatization, but also actively participates in its creation by means of diverse activities of researchers in the media. The author makes an attempt to indicate what are the implications of this media activity of researchers and what dilemmas it raises.

Mediatization of politics, including historical politics which takes a crucial part in the process of creating collective memory, is a fact. Media - as a carrier of memory - are used to circulate the images of the past and the present and give meaning to them. The objective of this article was an attempt to analyze Polish media discourse between 1965 and 1989/90 with reference to the phenomenon of creating memory about Polish-German reconciliation. In what way, taking into consideration the role of press and media in creating memory, was the memory about the most significant in the discussion about Polish-German reconciliation events (Letter of Reconciliation of the Polish Bishops to the German Bishops, kneeling of Willy Brandt in front of the monument commemorating 500 thousand Jewish people murdered by Nazis) created, presented, in what way was it commemorated in "Tygodnik Powszechny" and "Polityka" between 1965-1989/90. The following paper attempts to describe the changing media discourse (its elements and qualities) which was the basis for building the image of Polish-German reconciliation emerging from the source material.

Opis:
Over the last decades, it has been possible to observe an increasing amount of research having for common assumption the impossibility to dissociate changes which occur within medias, culture and society. Mediatization theories, particularly developed in Scandinavian countries, and American configurations of cultural studies utilize interesting tools and conceptual material to think about the transformations that occur within the social field. Both encourage questioning the power relations and struggles that inform those transformations. However, their manner of conceiving and using “culture” and “media” as conceptual tools for analysis differ, bringing multiple and diverging ways to study and question objects, phenomenon and processes. These two approaches do not appear as irreconcilable and would take advantage of being put in dialogue as a way to see how they can possibly complement each other. For example, by enriching their mutual understanding of power and, therefore, their critical character. This article draws points of tension and convergence between cultural studies and mediatization studies. It explores cultural studies' focus on (cultural) practices as a privileged site to analyse power relations and their ongoing negotiations by and through media. This approach may resonate or complement Couldry’s (2004) proposal for a paradigm of media as practice “to help us address how media are embedded in the interlocking fabric of social and cultural life” (p. 129). This dialogue between mediatization theories and cultural studies is being put to the forefront with the hope it may allow further discussions and relevant theoretical avenues for critical research located within both fields. Thinking of this possible interplay let foresee the possibility of questioning objects, processes and phenomenon in a critical perspective in a context produced and characterised by medias’ omnipresence. It would allow researchers to question the power struggles that are negotiated through practices themselves, without neglecting the consideration that most of these practices are made by, with or within media.

The paper reconstructs Harold innis’ idea of media’s bias. It is argued that media construct a view of the future in line with temporalized Platonism that excludes people that belong to the past. The clash of statues and media in Charlottesville presented mediatization as a progressive but not dialectical force. Statues and media did not check each other’s biases. Media embody the confrontation of authority and publicity (Habermas) or the Enlightenment and Absolutism (Koselleck). After the neoliberal commercialization, the Enlightenment acquired the form of utopian future that confronts the media logic against conservative forces. The truth is constructed according to the prescribed future. Trump blamed all, in accordance with the Absolutist principle. Commercial media professionalism stood by its Enlightenment origins and accused Trump of revitalizing forces of the past. Because most citizens were against taking down the statues, commercialized media logic was less receiver steering than the public service media.

Changes that take place in social and media space on the local level indicate a weakening position of media. Current sources of media power start to be increasingly taken over by new political actors. Participants of the media market as well as actors active in social space acquire new competences, which were previously characteristic only of journalists. The balance of forces, relations as well as interrelations between media and politics starts to create a new form of partnership and cooperation. This gradually leads in consequence to the codependency of media and politics in financial and organizational aspects. This raises a question of how public institutions, including those of the local level, can find themselves in the existing reality? Do they have a chance to pursue their information and communication functions? And finally, does the mediatization of a local political scene allow for the individual shaping of the relations of the local government with its social environment and building a reputation?

Chronologicznie wyróżnić można mediatyzację rynkową, społeczną i prywatną. Każdy z typów spowodował znaczącą ingerencję w sferę sportową i organizacyjną Igrzysk Olimpijskich.
The Olympic Games is a great sporting event as well as the media event. Thanks to the media, millions of fans around the world can participate in the Olympic Games. However, the presence of the media has some consequences and changes the Olympic environment. The transformation, named mediatization, also visible on the Polish media market has been going on ever since radio and television began transmitting Olympic events. However, in the last quarter of a century, through the development of new technologies, changes are much faster. Chronologically, economic, social and private mediatization can be distinguished. Each type caused significant interference in the sporting and organizational spheres of the Olympic Games.

The article is an attempt of synthetic look on what the German studies on communication in the field of the mediatization of politics have accomplished. It consists of four parts. The first one touches upon terminological issues, since appearance of the two terms “mediatization” (Mediatisierung) and “medialization” (Medialisierung) is connected to different ways of understanding the relations between the sphere of politics and mass media. The second part analyzes positive and negative effects of the mediatization of politics in Germany. The third one justifies the meaning of the empirical research on this issue and presents the results of public opinion poll research concerning the relationship between the political and media elites. The last part examines the presence and the future of democracy in the context of the mediatization of politics.

Such undertaking serves as a rich background for the detailed study of discourse of face in cinema and other screen based media.

The present essay aims to reflect on the questions of how the BBC news website discussion forum Have your say is organized and to what extent it can be considered as a transnational or global public sphere for public deliberation. In order to do so, one must firstly look at this discussion forum in terms of its structure, so that we can comprehend in a descriptive and formal way what is Have your say. Then, to try to understand and suggest what exactly Have your say is in terms of the possibility of being a global public sphere for public deliberation, one must tackle into a reflection that encompasses the concepts of transnational/global public sphere (Habermas, 1996; Castells, 2008), public deliberation (Pateman, 1970; Drvzek, 2000; Abelson et al., 2003), as well as some mediation/mediatization paradigms. The goal of this essay is to provide an objective academic reflection by attempting to frame this specific online phenomenon within the concepts above mentioned, to ultimately argue and prove that online discussion forums such as Have your say are by definition ambivalent.

The article examines the phenomenon of professionalization of political communication in the age of mediatization. The starting point in the discussion is the statement that professionalization of election campaigns is not synonymous to professionalization of political communication. The discussion is conducted from the strategic approach to communication activities undertaken by party organizations. In the first part, the hitherto recognition of the professionalization process is analyzed. The next step presents selected research methods that attempt to structure professional research. As a result of the previous research experience and undertaken analyzes, a new look at the professionalization process is suggested.

Religious advertising as a kind of religious persuasive communication based on the element of the sacred is a Polish phenomenon. The article presents studies on religious advertising, its definition and typology and reception by select social groups. This kind of advertising confirms not only Hjelm’s concept of the visibility of religion, as it exists in both the media and public sphere, but also David Herbert’s concept of republicisation. In a country without a clear division between State and the Church, despite a well-researched decline in traditional religiosity, religion is visible in social media and facilitates development of human relationships, both online and offline. Commercial media, including the Catholic ones, seem to be perfectly subjugated to the logic of media, which supports Stig Hjarvard’s process of mediatization of religion.

The editorial staff of Mediatization Studies reckons Andreas Hepp as one of the leading academics in the field of mediatization research and his and Couldry’s book as one of the most interesting and up-to-date accounts on the issue. Opis:
Populism as a political position and rhetorical style is nowadays an object of comprehensive research and multi-faceted social discussions. The strong critical attitude of populists towards the status quo, towards what they regard as the chimera of democracy, is generally intertwined with the function of the media as a corrective factor with regard to government authorities. The development of mankind in the present is characterized by transformation trends in technological, economic, and social spheres. These trends impact the political environment as well. The challenges of the economic crisis, as well as the migration processes are strengthening the position of euro-skeptics and revitalize the development of populism. The present text is focused on the developments of political populism in Bulgaria. The political environment in the country is characterized by almost permanent merge of political entities, which gradually escalates the use of populist approaches, styles and rhetoric. Research attention to this political phenomenon is determined by the success of some newly formed populist parties during the new century, gradually winning considerable numbers of seats in the parliament. The use of populist phraseology is evident among all political parties in the country, whether left- or right-oriented. Bulgarian political actors of a populist trend – including political leaders and parties – have mixed, oftentimes changing, characteristics. this populist phraseology is transmitted to audiences mainly through the media. It has to be noted that the dynamics of the pre-election campaigns during the period of democratization since 1989 has been developing alongside demonopolization, liberalization and transformation of the media system. Deregulation of the radio and TV broadcasting sector dragged on, giving way to the development of two mutually bound processes – politicization of the media and mediatization of politics. The paper is structured in three methodologically interconnected parts, presenting: an overview of the process of politicization of the media and mediatization of politics in Bulgaria; an analysis of the political populist trends in the country; a discussion on the connections between populism and the media.

Rodzi to określone konsekwencje.
Aim: The issues of the child (and also of childhood) are relatively often addressed in various publications, revealing the multiplicity of aspects and contexts of these categories. The aim of this text is to consider the “child” category in the context of the phenomenon of mediatization which, in particular, comes down to looking at it from the perspective of the most popular parenting websites. Images with a positive emotional charge as well those with a negative and ambivalent one are both discussed in the text. They do not exhaust the spectrum of images of the child, but comprise those that appear most often on these websites and constitute a certain “added value” to the images presented by other researchers, looking at the child from the perspective of TV series and television programmes, or commercials. Methods: While preparing the text, we used the method of secondary source analysis, with the sources being websites addressed to parents, also known as parenting web sites. A review and analysis of these websites prompted the authors to reflect on the images of the child created by them. Results: The results of our consideration illustrate that, on the one hand, the scope and diversity of the information, suggestions, and advice given to parents from the perspective of the images of the child created on the websites and, on the other hand, indicate the scope of social, cultural, and educational consequences resulting from “translating” the virtual image created on the websites into the real image of the child, his or her behaviour, relationships, attitude to others and to the world, and to its daily functioning. Conclusions: The review and analysis of parenting websites indicate that in the vast majority they present the image of the child, defined in this text as a child at risk, regardless of whether this risk lies in the enormous mass of disease causative agents (highest frequency), or in other factors related to the care and upbringing of the child, and the circumstances and conditions in which they take place (lower frequency). It gives rise to specific consequences. On the one hand, exhibiting such an image pro vides parents with the necessary knowledge sensitizing them to all kinds of factors that may turn out to be unfavourable to the child’s development while, on the other hand, creating such an image may result in parents’ excessive and unjustified fear of being a parent, or in being overprotective when caring for the child. Therefore, it is important to make parents aware of the fact that in using parenting websites they should do so with caution and the necessary detachment from the information provided in them and, above all, use common sense in assessing the content they come in contact with

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic restrictions limited access to religious services and forced religious organizations to move most activities online, thus amplifying the processes of mediatization. They have also brought to light the existing power relations and hierarchies among and within the Churches, among others in the context of minority-majority relations. This context opens up new avenues for research on the topics of mediatization and power relations. We argue that in order to give an accurate account of pandemic-related developments, sociology of religion would benefit from employing user-centric research perspectives and a constructivist concept of mediatization. Analyzing research done on the topic of religion and the media in Poland to date, we present the key premises of our research project deploying the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse, and highlight how it may be of use to Polish sociologists of religion.

Opis:
Theoretical literature and ethnographic studies suggest that individual spatial (im)mobility and new media use are becoming increasingly interlaced through mediatization. In this article, we tested this assumption quantitatively, by examining possible associations between media use and emigration wishes which we interpreted as an indicator of spatial (im)mobility potential. Analysis of data collected in autumn 2014 in Estonia via a representative survey (n = 1,503), enabled the following research questions to be answered: 1) How have the emigration wishes of estonia’s population changed over time, in regard to mediatization? 2) What kind of media use patterns describe individuals with different emigration wishes? the results showed that, compared to earlier surveys, the (im)mobility potential of the general population had not considerably changed. The mobility potential was indeed interlaced with more active and versatile use of new media, and immobility potential with less active and diverse use of new media. Yet, these associations could be explained by generational differences, as younger respondents prefer to emigrate and use new media, while older respondents wish to stay in the country of origin and follow traditional media.

Opis:
Cel: w artykule wskazano i omówiono wybrane problemy religijne w kontekście postępujących procesów mediatyzacji w erze globalizacji, tj. eliminację sacrum ze sfery indywidualnej i społecznej, podważenie korespondencyjnej definicji prawdy jako podstawy w wyjaśnianiu doktrynalnych kwestii religii, zmianę rozumienia kluczowych determinantów życia religijnego. Podjęto również refleksję nad wpływem nowego kontekstu neoglobalizacji na dalszy proces mediatyzacji religii, wskazując możliwe kierunki zachodzących zmian. Metodologia: w pracy posłużono się metodą analizy, metodą krytyki piśmiennictwa i metodą przeglądu literatury. Wyniki i wnioski: procesy globalizacji i neoglobalizacji są katalizatorem przemian w obszarze życia religijnego, które traci swój wspólnotowy charakter na rzecz jednostkowego, zindywidualizowanego odniesienia do Boga, w znaczącej mierze dzięki kulturze postmodernizmu i postprawdy. Media, będąc częścią profanum i spełniając swoje funkcje w epoce globalizacji i neoglobalizacji, odgrywają istotną rolę w prezentowaniu opinii publicznej własnej interpretacji rozumienia doktrynalnych podstaw religii oraz determinantów życia religijnego. Epoka neoglobalizacji przynosi stopniowe przeorientowanie procesów kulturowych w stronę respektowania praw człowieka i dowartościowania państw narodowych, co otwiera możliwość zacieśnienia wzajemnych odniesień państwa i religii, np. rezygnacji z zasady autonomii państwa i kościoła/związku wyznaniowego na rzecz przyjęcia modelu państwa teokratycznego lub instrumentalizacji spraw wiary bądź jej eliminacji ze sfery publicznej. Wartość poznawcza: publikacja systematyzuje wyniki badań w obszarze mediatyzacji religii w kontekście procesów globalizacji. Wskazano możliwe kierunku zmian w procesie mediatyzacji doktrynalnych podstaw religii oraz determinantów życia religijnego w epoce neoglobalizacji. Uwzględniono myśl badawczą m.in. takich przedstawicieli nauk społecznych jak N. González Gaitano, D. Guzek, A. Hepp, S. Hjarvard, S. Hoover, S. Livingstone, M. Lövheim, K. Lundby, B. Meyer, W. Schulz, K. Stępniak.
Scientific objective: The paper indicates and discusses selected religious problems in the context of ongoing mediatization processes in the era of globalization, i.e., the elimination of sacrum from the individual and social sphere, questioning the correspondence definition of truth as the basis for explaining the doctrinal issues of religion, changing the understanding of key determinants of religious life. Reflection was also undertaken on the impact of the new context of neo-globalization on the further process of mediatization of religion, indicating possible directions of changes taking place. Research methods: The study uses the method of analysis, the method of literary criticism, and the method of literature review. Results and conclusions: The processes of globalization and neo-globalization are a catalyst for changes in the area of religious life, which loses its communal character in favor of an individualized reference to God, largely due to the culture of postmodernism and post-truth. The media, being part of profanum and fulfilling their functions in the era of globalization and neo-globalization, play an important role in presenting to the public opinion their own interpretation of the understanding of the doctrinal foundations of religion and the determinants of religious life. The era of neo-globalization brings a gradual reorientation of cultural processes towards respecting human rights and valuing nation-states, which opens up the possibility of tightening mutual relations between the state and religion, e.g., abandoning the principle of autonomy of the state and church/religious association in favor of adopting the model of a theocratic state or instrumentalization of matters of faith or its elimination from the public sphere. Originality and cognitive value: The paper systematizes the results of research in the field of mediatization of religion in the context of globalization processes. The study indicates possible directions of changes in the process of mediatization of the doctrinal foundations of religion and the determinants of religious life in the era of neo-globalization. The research idea of, e.g., such representatives of social sciences as N. González Gaitano, D. Guzek, A. Hepp, S. Hjarvard, S. Hoover, S. Livingstone, M. Lövheim, K. Lundby, B. Meyer, W. Schulz, and K. Stępniak, was taken into account.

In the article I discuss the problem of contemporary Polish political communication. In its communicative dimension, the contemporary mediatized reality has become an area of functioning of polarized and linguistically and ideologically separate communities: media broadcasters with their offer and separate recipient groups (with different competencies). The polarity of worldview and its linguistic realizations is the most visible in the Polish official political discourse. In the media it is realized mostly by linguistic activities of purely ideological character. Such polarized political discourse of the media has led to ideologically charged ‘double vision’ of reality and its conceptualization ‘Us – Them’ being the most characteristic trait of the contemporary media communication in our country. The phenomena discussed above, typical for current political discourse, are worrying because they draw our attention to a linguistic – and seemingly historical – category: to newspeak.

The objective of this paper is to verify if Google Books Ngram Viewer, a new tool working on a database of 361 billion words in English, and enabling quick recovery of data on word frequency in a diachronic perspective, is indeed valuable to socio-cultural research as suggested by its creators (Michel et al. 2010), i.e. the Cultural Observatory, Harvard University, Encyclopaedia Britannica, the American Heritage Dictionary, and Google. In the paper we introduce a study performed by Greenfield (2013), who applies the program to her Ecological Analysis, and contrast the findings with a study based on similar premises, in which we follow the trends in changes in word frequency throughout the 19th and 20th centuries to observe if these changes correspond to one of the major socio-cultural transformations that took place in the studied period, i.e. mediatization. The results of this study open a discussion on the usefulness of the program in socio-cultural research.

This paper discusses the religious outlook of the Russian Orthodox Church in Great Britain and Ireland constructed in its official journal. Starting point for the discussion is the social-constructivist approach to mediatization highlighting the role of media in the construction of social reality. In accordance with this approach the question is asked how the Church uses its printed media to construct (reimagine) its religious outlook. In order to answer this question the most important topics, motives and phrases published in issues of the official journal of the Church are identified and grouped into analytical categories. In this way a matrix of distinctive features of an Orthodox outlook is created and analysed. The analysis in this article shows that this outlook mostly consists of references to history and rituals. The other important features include topics such as: religious leaders, myths and heroes. This paper shows that the construction of religious outlook is not influenced by the media narratives of main stream media since the topics such as Brexit and refugee crisis do not appear in the journal.

In this article, I argue that the concept of convergence, as is still applied to media theory, has become an insufficient way for examining the current state and future of media phenomena. This is substantiated by the fact that digital media continue to exponentially percolate into human experience in ways that transcend mere integration.  I contend that a recognition of post-convergence as a theoretical realization is crucial to future developments in media theory because it presumes that digital media are progressing toward a “digitization of life” in ways that are envisioned within the very logic of digitality. As post-convergence continues its way to become a theoretical realization, media theory should begin posing its questions about the digital not in terms of how traditional media and its attributes prevail in the digital, but of how digitality as an objective reality engenders experiences of the real requiring approaches that can only be formulated from the logic of post-convergence.  From such theorization, I propose a working typology for conceptualizing the possible nature and direction of post-convergent media: hyper-mediation, bio-digitality, hyper-connection, and hyper-simulation.

W podsumowaniu uwzględniono wnioski metodologiczne i sformułowano postulat transdyscyplinarnych badań nad saturacją medialną.
The article is dedicated to media saturation. Firstly, it presents a discussion on the relationship between saturation and mediatization. The theoretical assumptions on media saturation are indicated here with a reference to two general types: technological saturation and mediated processes saturation. In addition to this, an analytical tool of communicative fi gurations is being described. Secondly, the analysis of saturation of two case studies – closed space Sky Tower shopping mall and open space P.I.W.O. Light Show project – helps to formulate methodological conclusions as well as recommendations for transdisciplinary research on media saturation going forward.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of digital media became necessary to maintain community continuity for numerous churches. Given their increasing “entanglement” with digital media, it is important to ask how to study the relationship between religious institutions and media. This paper advances a constructivist, actor-centric conception of mediatization, according to which media become an integral part of all spheres of social life, including religion. Based on a study of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Poland, it shows that during the pandemic intensified mediatization processes and related trends led on the one hand to a shift of media awareness manifesting in media practices and, on the other, to a transformation of the authority of pastors resulting from the necessity of sharing digital skills.

Opis:
In contemporary media and communication science, mediatization is regarded as an “emerging paradigm”, but the term itself is diffuse and highly contingent. An attempt is made in this paper to integrate structural and individual concepts of mediatization theory by combining it with Bourdieu’s field theory using the example of science. After outlining the notion of mediatization underlying this text, the special features of scientific communication and the scientific field are presented. Hypotheses mentioned in the literature on the influence of new media technologies on science are contrasted with the state of research. This reveals that the impact of media innovations cannot be seen in a monocausal manner. In field-specific mediatization, they interact with various structural and individual elements.
