Opis:
In the paper author analyses the visual appearance of the literary art work. Letters as a visual form are not only an inactive carrier of the verbal meaning. They also effect aesthetically as well as every communication medium. The letters can be the carrier of the art value, which is not of the semiotic character. In the written text there exist two degrees of the verb visualisation. The first degree is the visualisation as an indispensable and pragmatical condition of the beeing of the text. The second is the visualisation as an intentional emphasizing of the visual aesthetic text activity. Author compares functions of two essential semiotic modes in the text (the literary and the visual mode) and how they influence the aesthetic text effectiveness upon his beholder. The main task of the paper is to verify the hypothesis that the cooperation between the image and the verbal principle creates a new aesthetic potention, which increases and oversteps the literary text easthetics.

This article attempts to examine the problem of friendship as it was understood by Seneca in his letters sent to Lucillus. The author scrutinizes the main items in the philosopher’s autobiography to investigate the influence of the events from Seneca’s biography in the shaping of the opinions of the thinker. Lucillus, the addressee of the letters, was actually Seneca’s long-time friend and confidant. The issue of friendship has a long and rich tradition of its own in the antique times. This particular relationship between human beings was of much interest to Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Cicero and many others. Seneca does not venture into an attempt at creating a vision for coherent science related to friendship. What he does though is to furnish a vast array of thoughts concerning such questions as: who is worthy of friendship, why is it worth having a friend and what forms the basis for friendship? Strangely enough, these establishments made by Seneca somehow seem to be more close to us than those in which the philosopher constructs the image of a superhuman wise man, a stoic.

Saint Augustine distinguished six periods of human life: infancy (infantia), childhood (pueritia), adolescence (adolescentia), young adulthood (iuventus), middle age (gravitas) and old age (senectus). Each of those periods has a perspective. Only in old age there is lack of it. Augustine makes the examination of conscience. Sentimental mood appears in the mail from the Saint Jerome, who poses himself as an old man in the opposition to Augustine as a young man, making allusions to ancient literature and his age. Exchange of letters between the Fathers of the Church records Augustine’s respect toward an old man, the monk. The entire reality is in continuous motion, as you can see in a simple anthropological observation of different periods of human development: childhood (pueritia), adolescence (adolescentia), young adulthood (iuventus), old age (senectus). The latter closes the death. Old age is a common weakness (communis infirmitas) of mankind. Augustine complained frequently on the impending old age, which according to ancients starts with 60 year old.

God had congratulated himself for creating the universe and humankind (Gen 1,31), a “very good” creation brought to nought by human sin. However, human nature still sighs and longs for the goodness and image of God within. God’s creation yearns to be created anew. Paul’s understanding of “new creation” and “new man” looks to the wise plan of God negated by sin. For Paul, the new era, in which the new creation reaches its aim in perfection, is the time of the parousia, the new and future coming of Jesus Christ. The Apostle of the Gentiles understood “kainē ktisis” in a soterio-cosmological sense, as the event consequent upon the redemption brought about by Christ Jesus that will be fulfilled in the parousia. New creation, new mankind in a new covenant takes place in communion with the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus in Baptism. The fundamental condition by which the revelation of the mystery of God takes place is the new covenant fulfilled in the blood of Christ and its effects: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, upon those who believe, as even the prophets had foretold. One can observe the development of the Pauline thought in his Letters: from a theological perspective and its legitimacy in the Major Letters, to the practical consequences in the daily life of the Christian assemblies in the Deutero-Pauline Letters, that emerge from the application of these theological arguments.

The life and works of Niccolò Paganini, a Genoese violinist, are the subject of many texts and articles. Despite the discovery of his letters and the existence of his numerous biographies, often divergent in content, from which I will try to reveal and compare more accurate and reliable information, there are many unclear issues concerning various episodes of his life. These doubts concern his stay in Wrocław, an episode of his life thought of as secondary in relation to many others, but in which many important events took place, events allowing for enrichment of his biography and getting to better know the personality of the Genoese master. The article offers an analysis of the master’s stay in Wrocław, comparing his more reliable biographies, extracting information from his personal letters, which are a valuable literary source, and not forgetting the art for which he lived, music.

The article presents the letters of Sidonius Apollinaris - Gallo-Roman aristocrat, poet and bishop. The study aims at analysing the letters of Sidonius from the point of view of their purpose, the models used, the argumentation, and the list of recipients to whom the letters are addressed. On the one hand, it shows that Sidonius remained faithful to his masters in epistolography (Cicero, Pliny the Younger, Symmachus), while on the other hand, was able to change the form of letters according to the situation. The paper also allows us to discern the changes that took place in the works of Sidonius after his ordination.

The paper prepared on the basis of 842 hand-written letters of Zofia Kraszewska to her husband Józef Ignacy, is the author’s next publication of 19th century epistolography.Cosidering the specific features of family letters the author starts from the theory of literaturę, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, which describes variant of language in different social groups.Then he presents some types of derivatives used by Kraszewska to show to the addres- see the situation context of writing, to express her permanent sensitives and temporary affections, as well as to fortify the pragmatic impact of particular letters. They are the equivalent of conversation and should compensate the lack of face-to face contact bet- ween the wife and her lamous husband.

In 2004 the North America Letter Collection (Nordamerika-Briefsammlung) received an extraordinary letter series consisting of 202 letters written by 19 different authors, all members of a large transatlantic family network (Bohn family). They wrote to each other beginning in the mid-19th century after four out of five children had immigrated to the United States. Letters were written to family members in Germany and between family members in the United States settling in different places. Drawing on this unique collection as well as on two volume family history written by the American amateur historian in 1982 and interviews with family members conducted in 2004 and 2006, the paper reconstructs the memory of transatlantic family, spanning the life experience of seven generations. The analysis sheds light on how history and memory are intertwined. It also demonstrates that Bohm family’s history and identity is the outcome of the interplay of the social construction of individual memories and its continuous reproduction in the form of stories told and histories written as a means of creating family cohesiveness in a very diverse and spatially scattered and thus separated social environment.

Niniejszy rocznicowy tekst ma na celu ukazanie obrazu profesora Jana Szczepańskiego, jaki wyłania się z nadsyłanych do niego listów, przede wszystkim prywatnych. Korespondencja ta, znajdująca się w archiwum muzeum w Ustroniu, nie tylko pogłębia wizerunek wybitnego uczonego, lecz także uzupełnia wiedzę o jego nietuzinkowej osobowości. Dzięki temu możemy zdać sobie sprawę, w jak rozliczne inicjatywy społeczne był zaangażowany, a także jakim cieszył się poważaniem u przedstawicieli najróżniejszych środowisk. Wielość kierowanych do niego próśb i podziękowań bardziej niż o jego wpływach czy otwartości świadczy o rzeczywistych działaniach, których nie wahał się podejmować w imię sprawiedliwości i własnego ideału człowieka rzetelnego. Omawiane listy, obejmujące głównie lata 1979–1982 oraz 1989–2000, dotyczą m.in. sytuacji politycznej w Polsce na początku lat 80., wydawanych publikacji naukowych, wyjazdów zagranicznych, spraw związanych z działalnością różnych instytucji, bieżących zjawisk społecznych, wsparcia, jakiego udzielał Szczepański młodym naukowcom, a także jego publicznych wystąpień i funkcji. Wśród nadawców znajdziemy osoby ze świata nauki i kultury, duchownych katolickich i ewangelickich, polityków, działaczy społecznych, publicystów, ale również zwykłych ludzi, zwracających się do niego ze swoimi problemami. Wszyscy oni tworzą wielogłosową opowieść o Szczepańskim, która prezentuje go nie tylko jako socjologa przypisanego okresowi PRL-u; aktualnych wydaje się sporo jego koncepcji, bez wątpienia zaś za taki uznać można wyznawany przezeń etos.
This anniversary text is meant to show the image of professor Jan Szczepański, which rise from the letters send to him, first of all the private ones. That correspondence, situated in the archive of museum in Ustroń, deepens our knowledge about him as a prominent scholar, but also reveals his extraordinary personality. We can realize in how various social initiatives he was engaged and how highly esteemed by the representatives of very different environments he was. The plurality of requests and thanks addressed to him more than about his influences or frankness tells us about real actions, which he did not hesitate to undertake in the name of justice and his own ideal of a reliable human. The letters presented in this sketch, including mainly the years 1979–1982 as well as 1989–2000, relate to i.a. political situation in Poland in early ‘80s, scientific publications, foreign departures, matters connected with the activity of different institutions, the current social phenomena, the support given to young scholars by the Professor, and also his public pronouncements and functions. Among the senders we can find people from the world of science or culture, catholic and evangelical clergymen, politicians, social activists, journalists, but also the common men, turning to him with their problems. They all create a polyphonic tale about Szczepański, which presents him not only as a sociologist attributed to the period of the Polish People’s Republic. A lot of his conceptions seems to be still topical, doubtlessly we can consider as such the ethos confessed by him.

This article concerns a fragment of research interests of the ethnographer from Lodz – professor Jaworska. In fact, Jaworska neither created the methodological theory of doing an ethnographical field research in a rural socio-cultural context nor the special theory connected with rural study, despite the fact that the most important area for her (in terms of science as well as her personal interests) were the Carpathian villages and the type of pastoral economy. The author of the text analyzes the letters of Jaworska written over 40 years, which reflect Jaworska’s attitude to her mountain field work carried out there as well as to the area itself.

The aim of this paper is to present press column Readers’ letters through dialogical elements in texts of this column. We would like to show in which situations and with what objectives the authors of the letters refer to texts written before. Interdiscursive dialogic is used the most frequently but we have also found some examples of interlocutive dialogic. In this case, the author anticipates a possible answer from his interlocutor. The references to other letters serve as a background to show the opinions of the author. Often, he defies his predecessors’ opinions, but the opposition is not very outright and is frequently expressed by the concessive argumentative scheme : “Admittedly P but Q”. The second problem which we want to mention is the presence of interactive elements in readers’ letters. Authors use apostrophes (vocative forms), 2nd person forms of verbs, imperative verbs, 2nd person pronouns, possessive pronouns appropriated to the interlocutor, polite formulas typical for conversation. The specificity of readers’ letters shows some ambiguity between monologue and dialogue. We should also notice a great variety of texts in this column. In our corpus, we often find typical comments and even real letters. The form of the letter frequently depends on newspapers’ or magazine’s convention. Our text corpus contains about 100 examples of press column Readers’ letters from different French or Swiss newspapers and magazines (Tribune de Genève, L’Hebdo, La Recherche, Que choisir, L’Express, Femme actuelle, Causette).

The article discusses issues concerning the functioning of Kiejdany in the 17th century as represented in Piotr Kochlewski’s writings and his replies to the letters of the city’s mayor – Józef Zygmuntowicz. Kochlewski, who was a deputy in the private city of Krzysztof Radziwiłł, reported to his master on building of the Protestant community and a school, among others. He also responded to the allegations made by Zygmuntowicz, disagreeing with his position on such matters as land measurement, punishing townspeople and enforcement of Radziwiłł’s recommendations. He accused the mayor of ill-treatment of the citizens and manipulating public opinion; he also criticized the mayor’s self-serving attitude during a plague. The position in these disputable matters was also taken by Prince Krzysztof, who in a letter addressed to mayors of Kiejdany supported his governor.

The newly published correspondence of Jerzy Lisowski with Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, during a very specific period, when, just after the war, the imposed socialist-realist regime was taking shape, will serve as an example. However, the practices connected with disciplining public order in Poland are not the subject of the article, but people with completely different aesthetic desires. Politics in this correspondence gives way to the plan of, for example, fascination with Romance studies and the achievements of Western culture, which not only united the authors of the epistolary dialogue, but also significantly shaped it for the rest of their lives. This is particularly important if one looks at the professions of both participants in the correspondence. The author of the article takes as a paradigm elements of Michel Foucault’s claims from the collection of lectures entitled Hermeneutics of the Subject from the College de France from the turn of 1981/1982. The correspondence is analysed in terms of claims related to the practices of the self, the exchange of letters between friends in the age of antiquity, and parrhesia. References to fragments of an elementary work on epistolography, namely Theory of a Letter [Teoria listu] by Stefania Skwarczyńska, are also an important element. One of the inspirations for writing the article was also New Theory of a Letter [Nowa teoria listu] by Anita Całek, who also proposes to look at the correspondence through the prism of the theorems of Foucault and Skwarczyńska. The aim of the article was to present not only the essential features of a letter in the context of the formation of interpersonal relations, but also the maturation of personality and to understand to what extent letters may become a testimony of rich autobiographical narratives.

The article discusses the image of the United States depicted in Czesław Miłosz’s correspondence coming from the years 1945-1950. The author of the article refers to the circumstances that led the poet to taking up a job as a diplomat and analyses a variety of opinions on that decision circulating among both Polish and émigré writers. The letters discussed reflect the culture shock and the slow process of acclimatization that the poet went through; his way of perceiving and trying to understand America. The article also focuses on the role Miłosz played as a mediator  between the Old and the New Worlds, translating American literature into Polish and trying to popularize Polish culture in the US.

The article is a reaction to the second edtion of Józef Czechowicz’s Letters (2011), which the author compares to the first edition (1977). It turns out that the poet’s letters, when they went through censorship screening in the 1970s, were purged not only of politically charged passages, where he mentions Miłosz, Czuchnowski, Iwaniuk, and Łobodowski, as well as the critical passages about Marxism, but also his remarks about Jews, remarks that were mostly antisemitic and stereotypical. The analysis of these passages is confronted with Czechowicz’s photographs of the Jewish quarter in Lublin and with the “Jewish traces” in his poetry. Above all, however, the discussion focuses on the language of violence, exposed in the poem śmierć [death] in the volume called dzień jak co dzień. The poem has been interpreted polemically, in opposition to Jacek Leociak, who reads śmierć both figuratively and as a text about a slaughterhouse. In this way, unexpected dimensions of Czechowicz’s sensitivity are shown, as the poet understands the cruelty of modern “animal killing industry” (used by the designers of the Holocaust machine), while at the same time he uses a dangerous array of antisemitic stereotypes, which were previously unknown to his critics.

The early 1980s were characterized by a paradigm change in history. The premises, research methods and research goals of the dominant paradigm of "social and structural history" were challenged by the “subjective turn” in history contesting the logocentrist and linear way of historical thinking, the established techniques of history writing and the systems of historical knowledge production. The emerging new fields of research and research approaches – oral history, life histories, historical anthropology and history and memory – were closely interconnected, methodologically and with regard to their theoretical foundations. Going back to some of the arguments put forward in the discussion about the linguistic turn in the 1980s, I will argue that in order to be able to "read" and understand immigrant letters historians have to approach them as "texts" and not just as illustrative historical source material. It is necessary to not only look at content but also at the way the content is presented, i.e. the narration and the narrative structure of the letters. In order to elucidate the methodological bridging function of these two approaches and their contribution to overcome the micro-macro divide, I will in a first step contextualize the specific theoretical value of life history research by putting it in the context of arguments developed by historical anthropology. In a second step, I will apply the developed research framework to reconstruct the structural properties and historical sequences of life course processes as represented by the narratives of the letters of Ernst and Marie Kuchenbecker written between 1891 and 1932.

The study presents the results of the analysis of verbal politeness in private letters. The persuasive aspect was taken into account. The paper concentrates on unpublished letters and greeting cards written by inhabitants of Teschen Silesia from the 1894–1952 period. The study shows a local model of politeness. Complying with the rules, the sender of private letters can affect the recipient more efficiently.

The aim of the article is to highlight different forms of expression in ''Confiteor" by Antoni Szandlerowski (1878-1911). The work was published after the author's death in 1912. It contains the letters Szandlerowski sent to his beloved, Helena Beatus. Within it, he uses a wide array literary expression forms developed and used during the period of Młoda Polska; ''Confiteor" contains sublime emotional confessions and shows how fragile and even neurotic the represented love was. In his letters, Szandlerowski uses many exclamations and emphasizes his recognition of Beatus' virtues of spirit. The author is interested in symbolism and is strongly influenced by Near East mythology, ancient Greek culture, and by the early works of gnostic authors interpreting the Bible, let alone romantic poetry. He places a strong emphasis on the connection between him and Beatus and on how hard and complicated their love is.

Paul the Apostle left behind a unique legacy in the form of letters written to the ekklesia, including those founded by him in Galatia, Macedonia, Thessaly and Achaia. An important issue in the proto-Pauline texts of the Corpus Paulinum is the phenomenon of prophecy. In addition to recognizing the divine inspiration of the OT prophetic books, discovering in them the prophecies concerning the Messiah and the Gospel, with its character and message and the role he played in it, the Apostle sees the importance and role of the charism in building the local ecclesial community. In particular, he draws attention to the prophecy in his correspondence with the community in Corinth (1 Cor 12 and 14). There we find very interesting threads related to the practice of this gift at liturgical gatherings. Paul sees this gift as essential to building the ekklesia. According to his concept, through this charism God admonishes, encourages and strengthens his Church. No wonder that it was the prophecy and the prophet's ministry that were distinguished and recognized as one of the most important charisms, playing a special role in the development of the ekklesia.

This article provides the most important information about the edition of the letters of the German composer Anna Teichmüller (1862-1940) and Martha Hauptmann (1862–1939), first wife of Carl Hauptmann, German writer in Lower Silesia at the turn of the 20th century, who changed his scientific career into the artistic life in the colony of artists in Szklarska Poręba (Schreiberhau). The correspondence between both women is a proof of their mutual relationship full of love and friendship, gradually transformed into jealousy and pain. The analyse of the letters compared with Martha Hauptmann’s memories shows a new until now not described image of Anna Teichmüller in the specialist literature.

In some measure, in opposition to the contemporary studies on Chopin’s letters emphasising their non-literary character, the aim of this study is to point at the multifaceted literariness of the correspondence of the author of the Revolutionary Etude. One of its crucial aspects would be the intertextual one: Chopin’s letters constitute an intriguing community of style, including, above all, the schemes of Fredro-like comedy and Henryk Rzewuski’s gawęda szlachecka (nobility tale). The idea of writing in the spirit of disciplined lightness, rigour of formulating thoughts in a casual, colloquial and easy manner, as Wiktor Weintraub put it, affects Chopin’s planned skill of self-creation and autothematical procedures, always in similar styles that use humour for the purpose of making thing unusual, or even obscene. The arguments collected in the article force one to withdraw Ryszard Przybylski’s conviction about Chopin’s epistolography as representing the language “serving life” only outside of literature and literariness.

The article aims to present the linguistic means (stylistic methods and vocabulary) used by Henryk Sienkiewicz to create the image of European and American cities in his Listy z podróży do Ameryki. The author of the article also analyses the descriptions of experiencing large and modern cities, proving that the images of European and Americancities perceived and described from a European’s perspective were contrasted. It is the consequence of perceiving European agglomerations as cultural and historic centres cultivating traditional values in contrast to the mainly industrial American cities serving as trading centres full of action and fast-paced life. The choice of linguistic means used to describe urban buildings was determined by the viewpoint of the perceiving subject and the perspective from which the act of perceiving was accomplished.

The situation in the job market and specific expectations of job applicants lie at the heart of a peculiar “career” that has recently been experienced in refusal letters. Additional elements influencing their form and content are German law regulations. Aperitif-Briefe, Eisschreiben, and refusal letters proper are the three main variants of this text genre which has undergone noticeable evolution in the investigated period of 2001–2012. The aim of this article is to indicate the development stages of this text genre, paying special attention to the aids offered to refusal letter authors by developing technology, especially by media.

This paper discusses the orthographic standard of the modern Polish language as regards capitalisation. On selected examples, we point to the fact that the general nature of orthographic rules governing capitalisation makes them ignore numerous phenomena characteristic of the economic and legal sphere. The absence of an up-to-date and diverse sample material illustrating the individual rules, in turn, hampers making prescriptive decisions with regard to the spelling of specific expressions from the domain of the latest official Polish language. As a consequence, the mismatch between codification and usage increases, which is exemplifi ed in the analytical part of the paper. The conducted research leads to the conclusion that such standardisation of the spelling of specialist varieties of Polish as satisfi es the needs of its users is an urgent matter.

This article examines the way Augustine draws on the theological virtue of hope to address how people should live in times of suffering. Of the three theological virtues – faith, hope, and love – hope is the least explored theme in contemporary Augustinian scholarship. This article develops a framework for Augustine’s model of hope from his Enchiridion and then applies it to select Sermons and Letters. Through this, we see that for Augustine hope does not represent either an anesthetizing, otherworldly vision that neglects suffering or an extreme ascetic embrace of suffering. Rather, hope seeks the transcendent good that acknowledges the profound depth of suffering while also maintaining a vision of happiness to come. Here, Augustine draws on hope to maintain a tension between temporal and eternal life, between the present reality of suffering and the future hope of happiness. We will also see a close connection between hope and its compatriots of faith and love, a connection Augustine utilizes to explore how hope transforms the moral and spiritual principles that guide our actions in the world.

The paper is based on marital and family letters; the author analyses them using pragmalinguistic and cultural linguistic methods. The article focuses on the phrases which copy or replace the gestures people make during face-to-face communication. The analysed expressions inform mainly about kissing, blessing, and the need of physical closeness. They are used to maintain emotional bond between the distanced family members. Relating to other sets of correspondence from the past, the phrases used by the Pawlikowscy are characterized by freshness and originality; they testify to the creativity of the authors, drawing from the morphological and lexical resources of the 19th century Polish language.

REASEARCH OBJECTIVE: The subject of the analysis carried out in this study includes the letters of T. Bzowski to his students. THE REASEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: On the basis of such analysis we shall try to answer the question: How did Bzowski reinforce the memory of the Chyrów school’s ideals in his students? The analysis shall be carried out on the basis of the content of his letters. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The memory of a school is created by a group of different people. It usually includes students-graduates, which – in a way – extend and transmit the school’s ideals, but the group also includes teachers and tutors. This study shall focus on the teacher’s memory of the Scientific and Educational Department of the Jesuit Fathers in Chyrów. It was an elite secondary school for boys. One of the most significant persons among the Chyrów school teachers was a Jesuit named Teofil Bzowski. Former Chyrowiaks wrote for that paper which reflected the school’s rich activity and the histories of its students. REASEARCH RESULTS: The analysis shall make it possible to specify the system of values cherished by the authors of the letters. The knowledge gained from the analysis of the letters as ego-documents shall make it possible to not only reconstruct the picture of the school and its influence on the people connected with it, but also to recreate the spiritual atmosphere of a given historical period. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Analysing the source materials one may come to the conclusion that the letters exchanged between the teacher and former students are a tool used for maintaining the memory of the school and its ideals. The memory is created through intergenerational interactions (teacher-students).

The article concerns the participation of Opole knights in the Polish-Teutonic War of 1414. The basis for the analysis is the register of letters of declaration which arrived on 19 July in Malbork. This source makes it possible to compare the degree of involvement of individual Silesian dukes (in this case, Prince Bernard) in this conflict and can be the basis for estimating the size of contingents brought by each of them. The letters mention slightly more than 200 knights, which indicates that Bernard was one of the most important Silesian allies of Władysław Jagiełło at that time. Moreover, the prince’s itinerary shows that the prince of Opole and his knights returned to Upper Silesia before the end of the war.

The aim of the article is to study the range of influence of indigenous vocabulary on sixteenth-century Spanish language which had been spoken by Spanish settlers in the New World and transmitted by them to friends and relatives left in homeland. Private letters of immigrants to Spanish Indies serve as a representative source which reflect their linguistic habits. The vast collection of more than 650 letters of immigrants was edited first in 1989 by Enrique Otte, and later in 2009 by Marta Fernández Alcaide in a much more reliable transcription. This second edition is the base of the research presented in the article.

The purpose of the article is to describe the model and method of management of the Literary Institute and “Kultura” by Jerzy Giedroyc using the categories of circles, networks, and relations, verifying in this way the editor’s legend. The analysis covered the entire period of the Institute’s operation (1946-2000), comparing the internal periodization of the activity with the changes of the authors in the “Kultura” circle, which made it possible to distinguish between the friendly and home circle and three authors’ circles. The diaries, biographies, and letters provided the grounds to emphasize the significance of the network for building the position of “Kultura” as an opinion-forming magazine and a place of help for emigrant writers. Managing “Kultura” is presented, which is focused on creating relations and being objective. Synthesis, content analysis, and comparative methods have been used. This problem has not been discussed so far in the extensive literature on the subject.

The idea that Shakespeare belongs to the world is certainly not new. From the beginning of his afterlife as a dramatist two issues have been consistently put forward by his contemporaries: 1) his art’s universality—for Ben Jonson, Shakespeare was the one “To whom all scenes of Europe homage owe”—and 2) his ability in appropriating foreign exotic environments which have notoriously characterised most of his plays. The value of such claims, which seem to be so present to us, helped to identify Shakespeare as an ‘universal’ icon whose work transcends time and space, gradually fostering, in and outside Britain, the so-called ‘Bardification of culture’, a phenomenon which persists, even more powerfully, nowadays. This study examines the different ways through which Verona has contributed in popularizing and elaborating the myth of Romeo and Juliet into a variety of formats suitable for the tourism market. By taking into account the so-called ‘Shakespace’ phenomenon, it focuses on what I have labelled as the ‘R&J-influenced spaces’ which account for a number of civic, cultural, and narrative spaces generated by and constructed upon the myth of the Veronese lovers.

This paper aims at collecting and investigating, from a rhetorical point of view, the speeches of the Achaemenid kings (from Cyrus to Xerxes) mentioned in Greek sources, with a special focus on Herodotus’ Histories. The many and heterogeneous discourses which this historian attributes to the different Persian kings (dialogues, private conversations, messages, letters and simple speech acts) are analysed and compared, and the research seems to point to some recurrent – and probably well-devised – patterns. The paper also takes into account the poetic speeches of Darius and Xerxes in Aeschylus’ Persians, and the scant evidence (a letter from Xerxes to Pausanias) transmitted by Thucydides.

In 1954 a young country woman from New South Wales, Shirley Dunk, ex- ercised her agency and travelled to London. This was a journey to the home of her fore- fathers and copied the activities of other country women who made similar journeys. Some of the earliest of these journeys were undertaken by the wives and daughters of the 19th-century rural gentry. This research project will use a qualitative approach in an examination of Shirley’s journey archive complemented with supplementary interviews and stories of other travellers. Shirley nostalgically recalled the sense of adventure that she experienced as she left Sydney for London by ship and travelled through the United Kingdom and Europe. The article will address questions posed by the journey for Shirley and her travelling companion, Beth, and how they dealt with these forces as tourists and travellers. Shirley’s letters home were reported in the country press and reminiscent of soldier’s wartime letters home that described their tales as tourists in foreign lands. The narrative will show that Shirley, as an Australian country girl, was exposed to the cosmo- politan nature of the metropole, as were other women. The paper will explore how Shirley was subject to the forces of modernity and consumerism at a time when rural women were often limited to domesticity.

The articles attempts at the reconstruction of the image of America in letters and memoirs of Dmytro Chyzhevs’kyy, Yuriy Shevel’ov, and Wiktor Weintraub, East‑European scholars who after WWII greatly contributed to the formation of the image of Slavic civilization in the West. They immigrated to the US in late 1940s – early 1950s expecting Harvard to be the site for their further academic endeavours since the after – WW II Europe could not satisfy their academic needs. Interaction with the American academic community developed differently for each scholar, which had its impact on their further careers. Impressions from America and Harvard in particular in their correspondence generally testifies to the their hopes and expectations, while memoirs contain a balanced or even distanced re‑evaluation of those. Historical context within which these writings are viewed suggests that for each scholar the image of America was dynamic and different due to their age, personality, character, previous immigrant life experience, and their cultural background and academic worldview. Unlike Chyzhevs’kyy, these factors suited well Shevel’ov and Weintraub in terms of adjustment to the reality and expectations of the New World. Further study of these scholars’ biographies from this perspective seems particularly topical under the circumstances of recent reformatting of the Slavic Studies as a discipline.

The text is devoted to those Sienkiewicz’s letters-features, letters-reports, letterscommentaries, letters-articles, letters-reviews in which the author of Quo vadis:1) verbalizes the situations of the „American Polish people” in the contemporary United States of America, 2) describes the Polish language they used, 3) expresses anxiety about its state, 4) analyzes the phenomenon of denationalization of the compatriots living abroad, 5) pays attention to the progressive Germanization and the linguistic-cultural Anglicization, 6) shows conflicts in the Polish organizations and institutions in America, 7) displays attachment to the Polish language of Helena Modrzejweska – distinguished theatrical personality. Letters from a journey to America (Listy z podróży do Ameryki) is a source of very valuable and diverse (also linguistic) information about the life of the 19th century Polish diaspora in America struggling not only with the material, but also spiritual, including linguistic, problems.

The following paper is a critical analysis of the discourse structures extracted from a corpus of ten open letters addressed online to Nicolas Maduro, current president of Venezuela, published between 2015 and 2017. The correspondents include common citizens, prominent political and financial figures, and show business celebrities. Following postulates proposed by Fairclough ([1989] 2015) and van Dijk (1980, 1996), the main objective is to determine the relationship between language and power in the selected texts by understanding the forms of relationships between discourse types. The two possible manifestations of the dominated discourse in opposition to the dominant discourse are: 1) the use of resistance discourse, or discourse of opposition to a dominant one, and 2) a contained discourse, where the dominated discourse is contained within the dominant discourse. Specific sociopragmatic aspects are analyzed in the greetings, pre-good-byes, good-byes, address pronouns tú/Ud., speech acts and free lexical combinations used to characterize the presidential figure. Light will be shed on strategies that indicate resistance, rejection or discontent, and how each letter expresses an interest in obtaining something from the president while at the same time reporting to other readers certain aspects of the president´s conduct. In conclusion, not only those who oppose the head of the Venezuelan government use resistance discourse and not only his supporters use contained discourse.

Artykuł zawiera szczegółową analizę leksyki i środków stylistycznych, użytych przez Sienkiewicza w opisach realiów związanych z podróżą i podróżowaniem. Ekscerpcją objęto zbiór wszystkich zachowanych 1401 listów prywatnych Sienkiewicza, który zajmuje blisko 3 tysiące stron druku w wydaniu zbiorowym korespondencji Sienkiewicza pod redakcją Marii Bokszczanin. Zebrany materiał liczy łącznie ponad 300 wyrazów oraz połączeń wyrazowych o różnym charakterze, użytych ponad tysiąc razy. Przeprowadzone badania pokazały, że relacje z Sienkiewiczowskich peregrynacji najczęściej mają charakter obiektywny i rzeczowy. Pisarz wykorzystywał tu zwykle wyrazy o treściach konkretnych, implikujących bezpośrednie odniesienia do rzeczywistości. Środki stylistyczne charakterystyczne dla stylu artystycznego w opisach realiów związanych z podróżowaniem nie są zbyt liczne. Większość zarejestrowanych przekształceń semantycznych to porównania, metafory, epitety oraz eufemizmy.
The article contains a detailed analysis of the lexis and stylistic means used by Sienkiewicz in his descriptions of travel and travelling. The excerption included the collection of all 1,401 preserved private letters written by Sienkiewicz; the collection contains nearly 3,000 printed pages in a collective publication of the correspondence of Sienkiewicz edited by Maria Bokszczanin. In the collected material there are over 300 words and expressions of different character, used over a thousand times. The research has revealed that the accounts of the Sienkiewicz peregrinations in most cases are objective in character. The writer used words with precise meanings, which refer directly to the reality. The stylistic means typical of artistic style used in descriptions of travelling is not too numerous. Most of the registered semantic transformations are comparisons, epithets and euphemisms.

Juliusz Słowacki’s drama Zawisza Czarny [Zawisza the Black] is one of the poet’s least described and analysed works. This drama is one of the last literary texts of the poet (next to Samuel Zborowski from 1845), written in 1844–1845. The researchers included it in the socalled “Mystical period” of the work of the poet. It seems that it is still worth asking about the genesis of a literary work, as it is, after all, an immanent part of the history of literature. The article outlines the hypothetical provenance of drama Zawisza Czarny, with particular attention to the biographical context. As the basis for conclusions and assumptions the selected correspondence of the poet to his mother, Salomea Bécu and his friend Joanna Bobrowa. Letters of Zygmunt Krasiński in which he mentioned Słowacki at the time when he was probably working on Zawisza Czarny and later, when writing was completed. The research problems discussed in the text concern: the possible causes of the work, the conditions in which the drama was created, the potential inspiration of the bard and the reconstruction of the biographical context. Considering the work in question in terms of biography is only an interpretative proposal, a set of conjectures and possible references.

The subject of this article is the Przewodnik do Języká Polʃkiego [Guide to the Polish Language] by Michał Kuś published in 1646. This guide is made up of two parts - an extensive dictionary and a grammar - a course book for learning Polish that is more than a dozen pages long. The article's introduction brings to light the silhouette of the author of Przewodnik and describes the structure of his work. In further paragraphs the authors focus on issues concerning the seventeenth-century Polish spelling. The article presents the most typical and interesting features of spelling used in the guide, cotrasts them with the view and recommendations of grammarians conteporary to Kuś, and compares the features with the spelling characteristics of the authors of several other seventeenth-century Polish-German and German-Polish dictionaries.

This article presents the concept of joy in surviving more than 90 letters of St. Ambrose of Milan. As it is clear from the above analysis of St. Ambrose’s letters, he included in them broad and deep reflections on a joy. Certainly the vocabulary that was used by Bishop of Milan to describe the phenomenon of joy reflects the richness of this phenomenon. The variety of topics, context, sources of joy prsented in his letters show the importance of joy in the life and work of the Bishop of Milan. He appreciates the earthly joy, drawing from ordinary, earthly life, but beyond it he submits the spiritual joy, „joy of the heart” (iucunditas cordis), which comes from God, the Giver of wisdom.
