The essay by Abdourahman A.Waberi (« Les enfants de la postcolonie: esquisse d’une nouvelle génération d’écrivains francophones d’Afrique noire », Notre Librairie, 1998) was our starting point for an in-depth analysis, leading to a balanced presentation of the postcolonial children’s generation.

Many questions arise in the understanding of texts produced in different locales within the bigger ambit of world literature. It is here that the need arises to apply various modes of enquiry in understanding them. Comparative literature can become a common platform for understanding different cultures and literatures. The present paper is a modest attempt to introduce the concept of comparative literature to a fresh learner and then to evaluate literatures from two different contexts (Dalit and African American) together for practical purposes. A model is proposed for discussing comparative literature in the classroom. Thus, the paper becomes authentic and unique research, bringing theory and practice together.

The works by Dobraczyński, once a very popular Polish catholic author have become almost completely forgotten. There are only two novels still known among readers: Listy Nikodema i Cień Ojca. The aim of this article is to remind one of the forgotten novels Przyszedłem rozłączyć... which presents the hagiographic trend, especially important in Dobraczyński’s works. Despite some artistic inadequacies, the novel still seems interesting because of the depiction of holiness and problems emerging from it, which are dubious, although the author’s overall tendency was to be explicit.

The article Cthulhu for Children. References to H. P. Lovecraft’s Works in John Bellairs and Brad Strickland’s Lewis Barnavelt Series discusses references to H. P. Lovecraft’s works in John Bellairs and Brad Strickland’s children’s horror novels about Lewis Barnavelt. Contemporary “children’s-like” books which make use of the Cthulhu Mythos are presented, as well as basic information about the series and relations between Bellairs and Lovecraft, which provide the foundation for an intertextual dialogue with the gentleman from Providence’s prose in the considered novels. Not only do the Lewis Barnavelt books, The Beast Under the Wizard’s Bridge in particular, utilize horror, but also ridicule it on the basis derived from the “great subversive play”. Therefore, carnivalesque world, in which ‘weak’ children defeat a Great Old One, contrasts with the universe known from Lovecraft’s writings, where humans, overwhelmed by the incomprehensibility and vastness of the cosmic power, are deprived of any hope.

Modern Emirati Literature written by Woman WritersThe development of prose in the United Arab Emirates occurred much later than in other Gulf Countries. The local press started to develop only at the end of the 1960s. ‘Abd Allah Saqr Ahmad was the author of a short story Qulub la tarham (Merciless Hearts) published at the end of the 1960s and the first collection of short stories in the history of Emirate literature entitled al-Khashaba (A Piece of Wood). The first literary attempts of the young generation of Emirate writers were published within the pages of the following periodicals: an-Nasr, az-Zamalik, ash- Shabab, al-Ahli. On the market appeared the journal al-Ittihad, the weekly Akhbar Dubayy and the monthly al-Majma’. The first stage of modern Emirate literature is constituted by a group of writers who started to publish their works in the years 1972–1975. Among them: ‘Ali ‘Ubayd ‘Ali, Muhammad ‘Ali al-Mirri, ‘Abd al-Aziz Khalil as well as ‘Abd al-Hamid Ahmad and Muhammad al-Murr. In the Emirates women publish their works alongside men. The most renowned names include: Shaikha Mubarak an-Nakhi, Salma Matar Yusuf, Layla Ahmad, Maryam Jam‘a Faraj or Amina ‘Abd Allah Bu Shihab. New generation is represented by: Basima Muhammad Yunis, Su‘ad al-‘Arimi, Asma’ az-Zar‘uni, Ibtisam al-Mu‘alla and Rawda al-Balushi. Their short stories concern social matters i.e. the marriage of underage girls, the lack of respect for the opinions and aspirations of the young. What is more, in those stories we notice attempts at new topics connected with the introduction of a new life style which in turn is related to the economic and financial changes caused by the discovery of crude oil.

The title of Marek Troszyński’s book Słowacki. Poza kanonem is excellent from the perspective of marketing, but at the same time, it succeeds in conveying thecontent of the 11 chapters of different length, supplemented with 8 interesting appendices and 65 aptly selected and described illustrations. In a way, it has a character of sylwa; its previous versions (published in refereed magazines and collective monographs) became considerably re‑edited in order to achieve the result in the form of monography. I accept the opening form of this dissertation, which is proposed by the author, as well as his affirmative attitude to the poet’s quasi‑literary achievements, which makes the author “a friendly witness” of Słowacki’s biography and writing. The work is undoubtedly original, own, exceptional and quite unique. I do not expect that in the foreseeable future we will encounter any gifted follower of the method, inquisitiveness, a highly interesting narration, and at the same time a lucky discoverer of so many philological findings, offering such a great number of the conjectures of the poems, not necessarily canonical ones, however, coming after the “canonical”, because critical, edition of Juliusz Kleiner.

In this paper, I approach to the relationship between the art and the democracy via discussion of two histories of Yugoslav literatures. I propose and try to defend a thesis that both accounts of the history of Yugoslav literatures synchronize temporalities of the different national literatures, reducing thereby differences between them. Both histories substantialize Yugoslav literature as a remnant of the lost community. They argue that immediacy of that community had dissolved into the variety of nations, which led separate lives under the rule of empires. In the name of that mythical past, heterogeneous temporalities are synchronized to the single temporal flow. However, the similar substantializing operation and synchronization is present in the more recent concept of (post)-Yugoslav literature.

These tensions between testimony and document, testimony and autobiography, and also relations truth-fiction, individual-collective, experience-event delimit the area of literary testimony. In this complicated structer the witness, charged, limited by the obligation with is double. This is the obligation to take an action — bear witness and the obligation towards the Other.

In the early‚ 90s a group of very important researchers began to focus on an accurate description of a Bulgarian dissident movement and migration literature. The results of researches in the field of history and literary studies do not give a coherent and explicit definition of dissent, dissident movement or migration dissident literature. In addiction recent works in literary studies, are not based on the various paradigms of dissent, but they create new terms and categories to describe the phenomena of cultural and literary period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1944 to 1989. The most popular are: alternative canon, anti-totalitarian literature, alternative literature, illegal literature – and in relation to dichotomies: literature of the PRB, socialist realism, socialist canon, official literature.

Popular culture, now being a medium of social dialogue, has stopped being perceived as a register of “lower” existential experiences, and its creations became the testament not of a cultural degradation, but of creativity of its authors, who seek fiction clichés which offer a new look at the deeply rooted social phenomena. Thus, if it is done with inertia and awkwardness typical for the subject, its potential of “explaining the world” should not be underestimated.

The article analyses the volume of poetry by Roman Honet, alicja, by means of the method of analysis and interpretation of a literary text proposed by Jerzy Faryno. The division into primary content (direct, resulting from a linguistic utterance) and secondary content (resulting from a linguistic utterance indirectly) enables one to attempt to interpret uninterpretable, as it is considered in the literature on the subject, alicja. The structure of the volume itself, specific punctuation and grammar provide certain conditions concerning the image of poetic reality existing in the world presented by the lyrical I. What is more, the same motives appearing again and again, specific meta-oneirism, permanent palette of colours became a starting point for developing our proposal. This approach to the problem was also supported by thematic triplicity of poetic content visible in the poetry. The further part of the article presents intertextual references to the extratextual reality and real historical figures (related to the Second World War).

Texts classified as travel literature remain underused material in the teaching of world literature, as well as within Polish studies. This article attempts to rectify this by formulating an original teaching proposal. It is intended to help construct curricula for future courses on world literature in Polish studies. In terms of genre, the proposal is based on the use of a wide range of foreign travel writing originating in different cultural environments and historical periods, and representing various literary genres. With reference to teaching methods, this proposal is based on the simultaneous and coordinated use of two modern teaching techniques: presenting students with tasks requiring creative thinking and with open-ended problems intended to provoke intellectual effort. Student activity, supervised by the teacher, thus becomes one of the main objectives of the class. The form of teaching that is most conducive to the realisation of this teaching proposal is a conversation-based class and lecture. Both facilitate effective, multi-vectorial intellectual interaction and team work.

Opis:
It is beyond any doubt that Richard Griffiths’ The Pen and the Cross is an interestingly written and a rather fascinating book, which certainly is a valuable addition to the study of Catholic writing. It provides a very basic insight into the development of Catholicism and Catholic literature in England between 1850 and 2000, which includes many notable, yet still forgotten novelists and poets. An attempt to discuss such a vast number of writers was very ambitious and certainly involved artistic as well as critical skill, and yet Mr. Griffiths manages to provide the reader with a quite clear and comprehensible description of Catholic writing. The main focus of the study seems to be the influence of Roman Catholicism on the writers (recusants, converts and even, in some cases, nonbelievers) and their works. It attempts to examine the importance of religious experience in shaping the intellectual vision conveyed in texts of most notable English writers including, among others, Hopkins, Greene, Waugh, Sparks or Lodge. Mr. Griffiths acknowledges the fact that quite frequently Catholic committed literature is on the verge of propaganda, but when it is done well, as in case of the aforementioned authors, it may provide an extremely profound outlook not only on religion but also modern culture, human behavior and original literary themes and techniques. He also raises the question whether the understanding of Catholic novels and poems is at all possible without specific knowledge connected with religion. There are, however, elements of Mr. Griffiths’ work that need some explanation. One of them is the title. More often than not authors of various critical works, including those which deal mainly or exclusively with Catholic writers, try to convey in the title as much as they can about the subject of their inquiry or the attitude taken by them. The results of this are, among many others, Some Catholic Writers by Ralph McInerny, Literary Giants, Literary Catholics by Joseph Pearce, The Catholic Revival in English Literature by Ian Ker, or Catholic Literature: An Introduction by Margaret Sum-mitt. It seems, however, that Mr. Griffiths decided to go against this tendency. He chose not to provide (at least not in a straightforward way) any specific information on the scope of literature that he is interested in nor in the attitude taken by him in his investigation. Mr. Griffiths himself must have considered his title as not very informative, as he supplemented it. Only through the second part of the title is the reader informed that the work is concerned with Catholicism and English literature in the period 1850-2000. Still, it does not say much about the content. Catholicism in English Literature would be more suggestive, not mentioning other obvious options such as English Catholic Literature, Catholic Literature in England or, what seems also applicable, English Catholic Writers. All these suggestions address the issue straightforwardly and provide a sound frame of reference. Meanwhile, Mr. Griffiths refuses to include a term crucial to his work, and one that he otherwise uses quite frequently and discusses openly in the first section as the basis for further investigation; that is, “Catholic literature”. It is understandable that he avoids the term “Catholic writers” as some of the authors renounce it and consider it inappropriate. It is also understandable that he does not want to limit his investigation to English writings alone, as a substantial part of his comments involve French literature and he successfully presents the two as closely related and, at times, even inseparable. It is confusing, however, that he avoids calling his subject what it actually is, considering that his arguments supporting the validity of the term “Catholic literature” are very convincing. One reason for this eva-sion may be, of course, the marketing. “The Pen and the Cross” surely stands out among many other titles of works devoted to similar issues and may be considered appealing to the reading public. It is also possible that Mr. Griffiths does not want to impose anything on his readers but only suggests certain tendencies, leaving much space for speculation on the subject of the relationship between Catholicism and English literature in the period given. Also, he might have considered this title the only possible way of encapsulating all the social, historical and cultural elements which influenced what can be (and by Griffiths is) called the English Catholic literature. There is one interesting implication of the combination of “the Pen” with “the Cross” which maybe did not immediately occur to some of Mr. Griffiths’ readers. “The Pen” as a symbol of poetry and prose (specifically novels of a different kind) is combined with “the Cross” which indicates a specific religious commitment. However, bearing in mind Griffiths’ comments on the turbulent history of Catholicism in England, cultural and social difficulties that Catholic believers, and above all Catholic writers must have overcome, and finally the “pitfalls” of writing Catholic literature without falling into sentimentality, it becomes apparent that producing Catholic works involved many sacrifices and may indeed be seen in terms of bearing ones’ Cross. Thus, the title can be a general statement as to the situation of English Catholic literature throughout the ages. What is also very unusual about Mr. Griffiths work is the fact that his presentation of the Catholic writers seems to be strongly influenced by his personal views and likings which are clearly visible through the tone of his descriptions. Even though he recognizes the importance and influence of all the writers he examines, it is apparent that he is fonder of some of them over others. He directs his attention especially to three outstanding figures: Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh and David Jones. His admiration for them is convincingly argued and certainly well-deserved. However, while Greene is described as “a pivotal figure in the history of the Catholic novel in Britain” and Jones is treated as a highly original and forward-looking poet, Waugh is presented primarily as a re-constructor of the already existing patterns, “entrenched in a last ditch defense of traditional values” and his works, in spite of their great value, are seen as “a dead-end”. The last statement, although preceded by words of praise, seems unjust. Mr. Griffiths refers primarily and quite understandably to Brideshead Revisited as Waughs’ best work. He indicates a number of interesting ways in which traditional Catholic themes are arranged and constitute a substantial part of fictional reality. However, he seems not to notice a whole range of new, original and often surprising elements which, if carefully analyzed, may indicate new paths for the development of Catholic literature. First of all, the extensive use of satire, characteristic of Waugh’s early works, in Brideshead Revisited gains new meaning. It seems that for the first time the satire is aimed at the secular, modern way of life and religious elements alike. The reader smiles at political discussions of Rex Mottram and his friends, the adventures of homosexual Anthony Blanche as well as at Cordelia’s novenas for pigs and her collection of little black Cordelias somewhere in Africa. Bursting with laughter may occur especially at the account of Cordelia making fun of Rex about the rules of Catholic faith which supposedly include sleeping with one’s feet pointing east, sending people to hell for just a pound or keeping sacred monkeys in Vatican. All this is presented to stress how different and confusing Catholic faith is for the non-believers, and yet Waugh seems to be the first to exaggerate and distort religious truths for this purpose. He is also the first to create Catholic characters who are simply unlikeable. It seems a part of a convention to present Catholic way of life as full of difficulties and unattractive to the modern man, as it is with the Riversdales in Mrs. Wilfrid Ward’s One Poor Scruple. However, in Brideshead Revisited the reader feels no sympathy for Bridey or Lady Marchmain, the two most pious members of the family, not so much due to their sacrifice or ascetic life but their personality traits and their attitude towards other people. The potential saints are, quite surprisingly, short-sighted and egoistic. This is a strange novelty, and yet Waugh has a purpose in it. The two characters, especially when compared to other members of the Flyte family, make the reader understand that piety, devotion and knowledge of religious truths are nothing when compared to the sincere desire to act according to God’s will, however mysterious it may be. Also, Waugh reveals here his fascination with the act of conversion which he clearly values very highly. This, however, the readers may find in earlier works by G.K.Chesterton, Charles Péguy or François Mauriac. More thorough investigation would reveal a number of other innovative elements involving the creation of characters and spaces within which they function. This review, however, is not concerned with Waugh exclu-sively. The purpose, therefore, is just to signal that some important aspects of Waugh’s novels, Brideshead Revisited in particular, may not have been recognized by Mr. Griffiths. Otherwise, however, his remarks are very interesting and insightful. In his defense it should be admitted that the creative potential of Waugh’s works has not yet been fully explored by other writers. However engaging The Pen and the Cross is, it should be treated most of all as a good starting point for more careful research, since for some readers the overall character of the work may not present a sufficient examination of the topic. One simply cannot pass over in silence the very peculiar omission of such highly important figures as J.R.R. Tolkien, Rumer Godden, Geoffrey Hill and some others. Their absence at least demands an explanation as it does not allow for a fully comprehensive picture of the topic. Nevertheless, The Pen and the Cross, due to its briefness, may actually succeed in encouraging some of the readers to conduct their own examination of presented novels, poems and their creators.

The authors of this article discuss how the works of Hermann Stehr (1864–1940), a German writer from Silesia, were received. An author, who – like Gerhart Hauptmann – stayed in Germany after the national socialists took over. That fact affected the reception of his writing: to this day, he is considered as a representative of the so-colled ‘literature of blood and land’, which the Nazis perceived as expression of „German spirit”. This article presents Stehr’s literary works from various perspectives. It shows the tragedy of the author making political choices in times, when an individual, even the most prominent, was subjected to totalitarian processes of unification and de-individualization.

Is There Tunisian Literature? Emergent Writing and Fractal Proliferation of Minor VoicesThe article presents the Tunisian literature from the non-local perspective of global literary market and the circulation of translated literature. The minor status of the studied phenomenon becomes obvious even when the Tunisian literature is compared with the Moroccan one. What is more, this comparison helps to understand the consequences of some choices made by the Tunisian writers, choices that established diverging directions of literary quest and the ambivalent aspiration of belonging both to the Arabic and the French linguistic and cultural zone. This basic ambivalence is treated in the article as essential fissure and a kind of fractal principle, conducing to the proliferation of minor voices, instead of synergistic pattern of development leading to the synthesis of cultural contradictions. Some of these voices, such as Abdelwahhab Meddeb, try to inscribe themselves in the universalist, gallicized context, while others, such as the emigrant Arab-speaking writer Hassouna Mosbahi, find in the translation a chance of reaching new readers and the promise of escaping the status of minor or emergent writers. Czy istnieje literatura tunezyjska? Pisarstwo emergentne i fraktalna proliferacja mniejszościowych głosów Artykuł stanowi próbę świadomie „tendencyjnego” przedstawienia literatury tunezyjskiej z eurocentrycznej perspektywy. XX wieku. Te wybory określiły rozbieżne kierunki poszukiwań własnego języka literackiego oraz podwójną aspirację „arabskości” i „europejskości”, jaka wprowadziła wewnętrzne pęknięcie w lokalnym pejzażu kulturowym. Oznacza to eksplorację coraz dalszych rejonów pisarskiego doświadczenia przez głosy coraz słabiej słyszalne, pozbawione czytelniczego zaplecza, choć same w sobie interesujące. Kolejne nazwiska, takie jak Meddeb i Mosbahi, konotują różne sposoby usytuowania pisarza tunezyjskiego wobec Europy, pomiędzy poszukiwaniem odrębności a postulatem uniwersalizmu i poczuciem głębokiego związku z kulturą francuską.

Cultural identity is a very important part of national identity, as it defines the individual’s place in society. The aim is to show the Rusyn national identity consolidated in the contemporary literary works and to define the symbolism used by the Rusyn authors to emphasise their belonging to that nation. The six basic areas into which post-1989 Rusyn literature in Slovakia is divided are the following: poetry dedicated to the emerging national identity; poetry and prose based on folklore; rural-themed prose; metaphorical poetry dealing with diverse themes; literature for children and young people; literary translations. Authors belonging to the individual groups prove with their works that aspects of national identity, self-identification and, in fact, national revival continue to re-sound strongly in contemporary Rusyn literature in Slovakia.

The paper discusses musicality of Sceny łóżkowe (Bedtime scenes) by Adam Wiedemann understood as the constructive and topical dominant of the book. The writer`s ‘dream diary’ (including a ‘testimonio’ notation of dreams from 1987 to 2000), simulating the poetics of a personal document, in fact draws the reader into multilevel intertextual games. The consequent amalgamation of high and pop culture and the poetics of collage or sampling organize the dreams records of Sceny łóżkowe. The author analyzes Wiedemann`s work as a manifesto of panfictionalism and constructivistical ‘world mak-ing’ (cf. Siegfried J. Schmidt, Ernst von Glaserfeld, Steven Tötsöy de Zepetnek, Nelson Goodman). This in turn results in revealing the false referentialism or, more precisely autopoietic self-referentialism of Wiedemann`s writing, thus showing how unuseful traditional psychoanalisys and interpretation of dreams are for analyzing the manifestly constructivistical fabric of the writer’s humoristic and grotesque oneiric projections

The article juxtaposes two explanations of the ancient phenomenon of sacrifice, one of which, formulated by René Girard, emphasizes the aspects of scapegoating and transference of people’s violent inclinations, while the other, developed by Jonathan Klawans and focused on the ancient Israeli sacrificial customs, attributes chief significance to the notions of purity, defilement, and achieving the state of imitatio Dei by the offerer. Though these explanations are at odds in many respects, with Klawans being vocally critical of Girard’s approach, the article seeks to present both of them as applicable to the context of a contemporary sacrifice depicted in Adele Wiseman’s novel, The Sacrifice. Its protagonist, the article argues, finds a way of blending these two orders together largely by the use of the mental figure of the animal, the projection of which onto his victim allows him to perceive her in dualistic manner, as simultaneously sacred and wicked. In the light of this, the ostensibly morally sanctioned practice of ancient Abrahamic sacrifice is shown to contain an unaccounted for potential to instigate ruinous acts, and the figure of the animal, within a situation characterized by the blurring of boundaries and distinctions, with which a sacrificial crisis is unalterably associated, attains an ambiguous, if not sinister, significance.

Opis:
This article presents the image of a spiritual wedding between soul-Bride and Divine Bridegroom which is featured in anonymous meditations from the XVII century. They are bunched in manuscript form and stored in the archives of the Sisters of St. Norbert’s Order in Cracow. Therefore, it is proper to make the thesis that the author of this manuscript belonged to this abbey. The primary origin of these meditations is The Song of Songs which shows the special way mystics merge with God. This article also reveals meditations about ”spiritual marriage” that contain visible influences of the Fathers of Church and Żywoty świętych of Piotr Skarga. All these influences are evident not only about the authoress erudition but most of all about her need of strong effect, by means of suggestive images of figures, for the attitude of practitioners of meditations. With the aid of the idea of mutual love between Divine Bridegroom and human being-Bride, meditations were presented standing before God demanding from man spiritual transformation and pose of the human being who desires to internally change yourself for Him.

The paper concerns the didactics of literature in the postmodern culture. It focuses on the means and strategies of reading popular literature at school. Popular literature is still treated as inferior to high literature in the literary education. Yet, it may become an important element of literary education. Popular literature, which is closer to students, may be just as good tool to interpret our reality as high literature.

Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 435–451. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.24. The main hypothesis of literature circulation in a theory system can be formulated as follows: literature circulation is an inextricable element of literature, while literature constitutes an integral part of literature circulation. To provide evidence to this supposition, it is necessary to draw from the definition of a system proposed by Helmut Wilke in his Systemtheorie (1982). The social circulation of literature demands the emergence of a series of subsystems which, as part of the system, are characterised by their own factors, relations and ways of organisation. The most important category, enabling us to tell the difference between various subsystems of the literature circulation, is the medium. It goes without saying that any kind of literature is passed on via a particular kind of medium, i.e. the novel through the medium of the book, radio drama through the medium of radio, the feature film through the medium of film, stage drama through the medium of theatre, etc. It is impossible to separate “Literature” from “Circulation”. As a consequence, the history of literature is neither a pure history of a particularpiece or utopia (the latter being the approach of the idealistic literary studies), nor pure history of media (technology) as a part of a general history of communication and society (which is the journalism approach). Instead, it clearly separates itself from both, i.e. as a history of a mediated utopia.

In this paper the most important works of Russian-Soviet literary utopia and dystopia have been analysed to investigate the role of nature. In literary utopias, people and their needs are the measure of all things, and the image of a utopian future is the vision of a nature so subdued that the need to eat and sleep have been subdued as well. Yet authors, such as Chayanov, emphasise the importance of a coexistence with nature. Dystopian authors ( Platonov and Zamyatin ) see the meaning of nature symbolically. They see nature not only as an unconquerable force, but also as a force entirely impermissible to defeat and that should not be defeated: for Platonov and Zamyatin nature is the eternal source of all that is to come.

The interest of Polish scholars in literary works written in Ruthenian or in Polish language in the borderlands of the Commonwealth varied in different periods. By the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 1930s, Poland was rather focused on the construction of her new national state and the accentuation of her civilizational mission towards Eastern Slavic literature. After World War II, the new borders of the Polish state under Communist rule directed the attention of Polish scholars and cultural dealers toward a new national conception, whose goal was to eradicate the memory of the Commonwealth and to canalize the intellectual efforts towards “truly” Polish heritage, anti-German antagonism and politically correct ideologies. However, some groundbreaking works were written in the 1960s. Radical changes appeared after 1989. Publications multiplied exponentially in the 1990s and 2000s. Post-colonial studies emerged. In Polish scholarship and culture, two main trends may be indicated: on the one hand, the need to analyze the cultural, linguistic and literary specificities of the borderlands of Ukraine and Belarus in the Lithuanian Grand principality and in the Crown territories; on the other, the need to consider in a systemic approach all the components (Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, Jewish, German) of society and culture of the Rzeczpospolita. The article focuses on the most interesting trends and publications of the periods indicated above.

Series of eschatological exegeses in prophet Daniel’s visions in the context of the doctrinal dispute of Eastern Christianity and Judaism (about the manuscript BN 12245) The Bible’s Book of Daniel, along with commentaries of St. Hippolytus of Rome, belongs to the most important sources of Christian knowledge about the end of the world and the Final Judgment. In the medieval Old Church Slavonic literature, the Book of Daniel functions not only as a part of the Old Testament canon (separately or with comments), but it is also present in historiography, and in particular in apocryphal literature. Prophet Daniel and his vision of four beasts are also the basis for preparation of new eschatological texts where the threads of the doctrinal dispute with Judaism are noticeable. Such writings include a series of visions of Prophet Daniel with commentaries, rarely encountered in Cyrillic manuscripts, featured in Codex BN 12245. The article presents a textological, historical and literary analysis of the text. W artykule przedstawiono analizę tekstologiczną i historycznoliteracką zabytków.

How are the two literatures – the classic, the heritage, the scholarly versus the children’s literature, the overly easy editorial productions – much less opposed in reality than one might think? How can a real complementarity exist between literatures which will perhaps never be patrimonial but which can become school and the “great” literature? We will show how the reading of mythographic works seeks to design a teaching which makes the encounter with the book a triple opportunity for enrichment: to be moved, to escape, to learn. We will show how the reading of mythographic works seeks to design a teaching which makes the encounter with the book a triple opportunity for enrichment: to be moved, to escape, to learn. By taking into account the requirements of the time and the need for the school not to operate apart from opinions and practices, by a literature and a reading which accept to be useful for something, the French course must make sense by offering a new culture which is first and foremost a culture of oneself. It is first of all to show a living classical literature.

The present article aims to analyse the depictions of male protagonists in the oeuvre of Marek Hłasko. The post-World War Two crisis of hegemonic masculinity resulted in transformations of male and female gender identities in the 1950s. What seems to reflect the said reconfiguration of masculinity model are the changes occurring between the main protagonists of the particular pieces of Hłasko’s prose. In the 1954 short story entitled Baza Sokołowska, the men’s identities are, in the natural way, embedded in biology. In order to join the male community of drivers and gain their respect, it is enough to go through an initiation ritual. In the prose written by Hłasko after 1955, however, more and more often appear the male characters who humiliate the young and thwart them on their way to join masculine community, yet simultaneously some characters are presented who contest forms of patriarchal culture and refuse to participate in it. Hłasko’s Israeli novels, in turn, feature a series of male protagonists for whom gender (or even sexual) identity is merely a social construct. The narrator/protagonist of Drugie zabicie psa (Killing the Second Dog) would even consciously “perform” his masculinity to obtain an affluent female tourist’s trust and, as a result, to cozen her out of her money, which he needs to pay back his debts. The analysis of Marek Hłasko’s selected prose writings focused on the representation of various masculinity models leads the author of the article to a conclusion that male gender identity is consistently shifting towards constructivist concepts.

Following the path set by P. Scher, these authors have found a methodological dimension, on which issues of literary text functioning in the music sphere are located, and on the other hand, attempts to define a so-called literary text’s musical aspects.

The paper investigates the representation of oral literature in reading literary works of subject teaching by Croatian authors, which are prescribed by the Curriculum for primary school and which interfere with oral literature. Interferences were singled out on the basis of structure, theme and motives, characters, language game, homeland, oral literary forms, etc. It is realized that oral literature is quite represented, and that interferences mostly took place on the basis of homeland and patriotism, motives and oral literary forms. The research proved that the elements of oral literature are firmly and deeply inserted in the reading works of Croatian authors and that in no case should they be considered peripheral elements as was the case for a long time on the Croatian literary scene when oral literature was systematically neglected.

Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the experimental work of Stefan Themerson (St. Francis and The Wolf of Gubbio or Brother Francis’ Lamb Chops, an Opera in 2 Acts, text and music by Stefan Themerson, drawings by Franciszka Themerson, De Harmonie – Gaberbocchus Press, Amsterdam – London 1972) and the question of intermediality in general. An interpreta-tion of the ‘semantic opera’ (written in 1954–1960, as a continuation of Semantic Diver-tissements /1962/ and factor T /1956/), places Themerson’s idea in the context of aes-thetics of intermediality. The author signals a terminological confusion connected with the understanding of St. Francis and The Wolf of Gubbio (semantic opera; hybrid work; intermedial work etc.) and argues that an aesthetics of intermediality appears to be an important and inspiring context for the interpretation of Themerson’s text and life. In this case, considerations on the subject of textuality show, on the one hand, different relations between literature, painting, music and theatre (artistic intermediality), and, on the other hand, the phenomenon of intermediality as aesthetics of existence.

The dystopian novel Kaharlyk (2014) by Oleh Shynkarenko, the action of which takes place in about 2144, depicts various kinds of wars and forms of armed struggle: the occupation of territories of Ukraine by the Russian army, Russian-Chinese nuclear war, guerrilla warfare, the local conflict for power, and ethnic antagonisms. The description of the post-apocalyptic reality Grey Zone gives the author an opportunity to reflect on the dangers of aggressive ideology: imperialism, religious fundamentalism and radical nationalism. The diagnosis of Ukrainian society presented is also alarming. Hence, the work can be seen as a warning novel. Similar elements can be found in many dystopias written recently in different countries. An analysis of examples from Russian and American cultures shows that criticism of the existing situation is often combined with an admonition of the phenomena that may arise from the dangerous trends of the present, including armed conflicts. Hence visions of future wars, among other things, serve as a tool of discreditation against the ruling political forces and propose an analysis of discourses responsible for driving those wars. Implemented in such way, the ideological function, the metadiscursive perspective and humanistic values of dystopia allow for it, in our opinion, to be included in the arsenal of measures designed to “create conditions that scare of war or limit its scope” (A. Toffler, H. Toffler). The totality of these measures was defined by Alvin and Heidi Toffler as “anti-war”.

This article deals with Sui-jŏn, an almost unknown work not only in the West but also scarcely studied in Korea itself. Written most likely between the 10th and 12th centuries, on the basis of older, unidentifiable sources, the Sui-jŏn appears to have been primarily a collection of fantastic tales. Today it is largely lost, but its partial reconstruction is possible through various fragments reported in later works. Precisely on the basis of these fragments, in the first part this article attempts to reconstruct, as far as possible, what must have been the nature of the book, its author, its genesis, its dating. In the second part, the symbology of some natural elements that appear in the fragments of the work is spoken of. It is a symbolism that belongs, in similar forms, to many cultures of the world, but which in the case of Korea becomes, in its presentation, a real milestone, being present in the oldest Korean work of its kind that came down to us, although partially.

In our text, we start to imagine three Polish literary authors from Czech Těšín Silesia (Henryk Jasiczek, Adolf Dostal and Jan Pyszko) from the standpoint of the relationship of literature and music. These poets have entered into the literature after the II world war and belong to different literary generations. Methodologically assumes the considerations of the Polish author Andrzej Hejmej on the topic of the relationship of literature and music. In the text of our studies are investigat-ing significant musical themes in literary texts and considerate also richly symbolic mu-sic at various levels of the literary language of the text — and, in particular in the area of lexical and euphonically. These events are the characteristics of a literary text. Striking phenomenon is the cooperation with local musicians and composers, poets, who are themselves also, donate non-professional music (Jasiczek, Pyszko). Some of the po-ems were setting for choir, piano accompaniment for the vocals with. Local authors also cooperated with the folk art files (Gorol) or amateur choirs (Melodia). The author of the study is also dedicated to the inclusion of these poets, not only to the regional, but the broader national literary context is the context of the creation — Czech Těšín Silesia authors with poetry Leopold Staff or Tadeusz Różewicz.

This article presents an analysis of three photo-textual strategies: filling the frame, cut and paste technique and creative transformation of absent images/texts in photo-textual exchange. Three post-millennial works (I Spy Pinhole Eye by Philip Gross and Simon Denison, Co robi łączniczka by Darek Foks and Zbigniew Libera and Áladerrida by Tadeusz Różewicz and Jerzy Olek) serve here as representative examples of those photo-textual strategies.

Elżbieta Zarych presented the Italian writer and musicologist’s famous monologue in the context of his other literary and theoretical books, literary and musical works that served as his inspiration, as well as, contemporary pieces which deal with the same topic. The author of the dissertation, while considering the music and melody of Baricco, focused on pieces that possess the two principal topics: ‘music’ and ‘sea.’ Baricco wrote ‘the sea is the music’ and in the monologue Novecento they both are connected in the highest form. The author presented the conception of Baricco who, in order to avoid classifying his work into literary genres, wrote just ‘stories’ while connecting the literature, the music and the painting into the ‘white music of a story’. She also presented Barrico’s concept of real and ideal music in the context of his multi-level plot and the Novecento composition. Furthermore, the author analyzed the jazz quintet accompaniment composition for the Novecento monologue written for the Italian actor Eugenio Allegri, as well as, explored the realized and unrealized ideas during the composition’s creation process. She at-tempted to characterize the imagination of Baricco who, using his musical knowledge, tries to concretize the plot of Novecento; the metaphors: ‘life is a navigation’, ‘a sea is a music’, and ‘a story is a music and a sea’, as well as, describe the life of an ideal and genial musician Danny Boodmann T. D. For Lemon Novecento, life is music and music interprets reality. The author showed that for Baricco too, music is something real and normal, and for this reason in Novecento he tells the story of real music – jazz, played in real time on a real traveling ship.

Word and music studies, which in recent years have been gaining more and more atten-tion, still remain a source of a never-ending discussion on ‘the method’ and ‘the manner of speaking’ about the manifestations of a work of music, which, put within the frames of a literary medium, exist only in the rhetorical sense, thus leading to an individual and subjective interpretation of a musical scheme. Sirens, the eleventh episode of James Joyce’s Ulysses, which was not so far analysed in the intermedial context in Poland, in-vites to a musico-literary reading — not only due to the author’s explicit hints but also the tracks in the text itself which cannot be ignored by a scholar (the sound level of the text, the presence of music within the thematic scheme, the author’s confirmation of the fugitive form of Sirens). Instead of asking whether Joyce managed to create a literary equivalent of musical fugue (which would be absurd due to the semiologic aspect), I focus on tropes employed by Joyce to blur the borderlines between literature and mu-sic. When is it justified to use musical metaphors with respect to narratives? An over-view of the western discussion over Sirens serves as a point of departure to reflect on essential issues concerning the musicalisation of fiction as such.

It compares and contrasts the association between World Literature and Comparative Literature to that between International American Studies and the American Studies movement emerging out of the United States. It goes on to argue that World Literature is anchored to a universalist teleology, one linked historically to an idealist intellectual genealogy. By contrast, International American Studies involves a more materialist, multidirectional emphasis that differentiates it from the U.S. appropriation of globalization to further its own strategic interests. Popular literature online is often misconstrued as being cliché-ridden and formulaic, and has thus not attained as much critical attention as ‘serious’ literature. I propound that popular literature published in China’s cyberspace deserves more attention and hermeneutic scrutiny, and I place an emphasis on danmei (耽美) fiction that features male-male romantic and/or erotic relationships and is predominantly published on a female-oriented website called Jinjiang Literature City. In this research, I investigate an online danmei novel entitled Tianguan ci fu (天官赐福) that concerns a homosexual romance against a background of ‘immortality cultivation’ (xiuxian 修仙 or xiuzhen 修真), which had been maintaining the highest ranking on readers’ voting list since its release on Jinjiang Literature City in 2017. I postulate that Tianguan ci fu does not deploy clichéd plots pertaining to quasi-heterosexual relationships, which frequently occur in danmei fiction. Apart from conveying the theme of love, the narrative concerns the complexity of human nature via an array of characters possessing multifaceted personality traits. More significantly, with a setting of mortal and immortal realms, the narrative entails religious ideologies, especially the indigenous Daoist ascension, mortality-immorality polarity and yin-yang integration. Furthermore, ethic-religious Confucian precepts such as benevolence and filial piety are also demonstrated, along with the Sinicised Buddhist creeds of reincarnation and retribution, which embodies the amalgamation of (sub)religions as a preponderant ideal of ‘the unity of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism’ (san jiao he yi 三教合一). Therefore, analysing this exemplary online novel can shed light on (a)theistic attitudes adopted by creators and consumers of Internet danmei literature.

The paper is an attempt at tracing the relations between the title categories of Kobieta – Historia – Literatura [Woman – History – Literature]. While concentrating on female writing, the researcher finds there the issues which have not been yet analysed, for example the feminist perspective of Wisława Szymborska’s poetry in her understanding of history; the question of identity, sexuality, corporality in the texts of postwar and contemporary female immigrant writers; politics of gender roles and stereotypes in (literary and non-literary) descriptions of Holocaust; and finally, the spatial determination of the female writers’ (Pola Gojawiczyńska) narratives about the history of postwar Warsaw. However, the most significant purpose of this article is to present diverse literary contexts which make it possible to tell “grand history”/“grand narrative” with the use of various strategies of narration created by women or placing a female figure (”feminity”) inside it.

Between literary and cultural comparative studies The article constitutes an attempt to present in a synthetic way the main assumptions behind the fundamental trends in the comparative studies of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as their evolution. Following the predominance of the influential model which had developed since the middle of the 19th century and focused chiefly on the genetic research of literary affiliations, and which had assumed the existence of a national literature as an organic entity, since the sixties of the 20th century, there arises a new perspective in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played by thematic and structural categories (motif, concept, topic, genre, current etc.). The nineties of the 20th century bring yet another attempt to reformulate the methods of comparative studies and to abandon focusing on literary studies, in favor of cultural research in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played, among others, by issues such as the concept of power, gender, race and also review and multi-, inter- and transculturalism

Opis:
The article presents the results of literature research in the field of Technology Assessment (TA). In particular, the attention was focused on searching for trends determining the directions of development of this research area. Research gaps constituting the basis for undertaking new cognitive challenges were identified. As a research method, a systematic review of literature was adopted, the methodology of which was described in the first part of the article. The analysis includes a total of 1788 TA-related scientific articles available in Google Scholar and BazTech databases. The practical part of the article presents fragments of literature research and an attempt to define the concepts of Technology Assessment on their basis. The collected research material showed a high degree of variation in the scope of definitions and the research area covered by TA. This indicates the need to conduct further research in this area for the purpose of clarifying the research area which TA deals with. It is legitimate to say that the development of research in this area is necessary due to the increasing impact of technology on society.

Opis:
This article discusses a representation of the relationship between a child and a big city in American and European children’s and teens’ literature. In many books, a child or a teen is portrayed as a contemporary flâneur, an idle city walker. Following Eric Tribunella’s adaptation of Walter Benjamin’s definition of a flâneur to children, the article explores various book representations of the big cities as they are seen through the eyes of a child. The city dweller perceives her environment as an exciting, even though sometimes threatening, place. Acting as a flâneur and a voyeur, a child develops a complicated relationship with the streets and museums of the big city. Enormous walking (and transportation) possibilities of the city are very attractive for youngsters. The hidden wonders of the big city mesmerize the curious minds of children and teens, making them natural voyeurs. Children are capable of combining the aimless gaze of a flâneur with the precise attention of a voyeur. Often, a city becomes one of the very important characters in a book, and a child forms a partnership with the city. In spite of the notion of adults that the city is a dangerous place for children, children immensely enjoy the city spaces, streets, parks, and museums. Museums particularly work as symbolical places of safety and exploration. Contemporary children and teenagers enjoy even more freedom to be city flâneurs and voyeurs due to the newly acquired speed of movement, including the use of bikes, scooters, and public transportation. With the main focus on New York City as one of the most striking example of a big city in children’s books, the article also discusses the literary representations of other megalopolises and large cities, such as Moscow and Minsk.

World literatures today often impose a separation of narratives from their geographic and linguistic origins. Translated versions of literary texts that were created and received within local cultural contexts, when translated, enter new, foreign contexts. When translations into many other languages appear, a writer may expect many diverse valuations of one`s work. Literary texts in translation, in fact, are an inseparable from literary experiences for many readers and the study of translated texts has a long-standing tradition. The future of such texts may also lie in the emerging future reading - “distant reading” to quote Walkowitz` use of Moretti`s term. Among the strongest arguments in support of such reading is the possibility, through translated texts, to establish a more aesthetic distance towards the object of a fictional text in translation. Translation gives us as readers a new and different approach towards objects we fail to notice because of their familiarity. Nature scenes and objects may be included among such features of the narrative that could be more aesthetically appreciated in the translated versions. The paper compares translations of nature scenes and objects of Shin Kyung-Sook`s novel into English Please Look After Mom (2011) and into Lithuanian Prašau, pasirūpink mama (2019). The paper reveals the scope of translation strategies of domestication and foreignization through comparison of translation of nature scenes and items into Lithuanian and English.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 60 (2012), issue 1. This essay proposes a synthesis of the major themes and issues of Polish Dantism, with a particular reference to the 20th century and beyond. The author retraces the traditional motifs which connect 20th-century authors to the Romantic tradition, and discusses some examples (Gombrowicz, Vincenz, Miłosz) in a broader comparative context (referring specifically to Eliot, Mandelstam, Brodsky). The author argues that the Modernist ethical idea of “necessary Dante” tends to be gradually replaced by a Postmodernist notion of “aesthetic Dante,” with a flowering of new translations—not only of the Divina Commedia. These works restore a balance between Polish literary Dantism and Dante studies. In this sense, the Polish situation displays a lot of similarity to the European and international context, abundant with trends and concerns which go far beyond those of a national language and literature.

There’s always been a question, whether reportage is literature or not, but nobody has ever asked, whether there is any connection between this genre and science. The main purpose of this thesis is to prove that reportage is a literary genre closely related to the humanities and social sciences. By analyzing two multi-genred works, which contain elements typical both of reportage and dictionary: Egzamin na świra, czyli mały i niepraktyczny słownik slangu hipisowskiego… by Jacek Hugo -Bader and Jakuck. Słownik miejsca by Michał Książek, I will try to find out what kind of impact is created by mixing those genres. The thesis will be started by discussion concerning main features of both kinds of works and their styles and after that, precise reading will prove, if the main idea of the article was reasonable or not.

How do people read popular literature? Is it possible to connect reading popular literature with category of aesthetic experience (what kind?), or – eventually – what kind of theory could successfully describe this relation? All those questions create a context of the analysis of the book Poetyka doświadczenia (The Poetics of Experience) by Ryszard Nycz. Its author postulates that literature should be understood as a form of the enunciation of experience. He circumscribes here an experience as a specific kind of two-way interaction between readers and their cultural environment, society or nature. It seems that a wide definition, which includes – for example – testimonies of community memory and private, idiosyncratic expressions – describes popular literature, too. However, the author of the article, precisely focusing on the motifs in Nycz’s theory, which directly or indirectly relate to popular literature, doubts its ability to read popular culture. He argues that Nycz’s formula, in fact, is based on modernist conception of high literature with its sacralisation, which eliminates understanding aesthetic experience as a form of pleasure or ludic involvement.

Max Donchin’s drama on Moses is one of the few literary implementations of the biblical figure in the Young Poland. The author took the matter of the Bible very freely, especially by selectively choosing numerous facts from the biography of Moses known from the Torah. Superficial, arranged according to the key political and historical scenes from the life of the Patriarch, completely overshot the biblical theology of communication. As a result, this does not bring the drama of careful observation and artistic penetration: Who was the contemporary myself and for whom Moses was the author of the modern drama. With his hastily running fairly fast paced action scenes, Moses emerges from a few of the characteristic forms, but not in any deep-dimensional features: careerist court, a guardian of the oppressed, a politician, a legislator and a teacher of the nation, with his mission, a tired, old man.

I argue for amazing values of the tradition of romanticism. I pay attention to connections between this tradition and the present. I write about necessary changes in reading romantic literature at school. In my point of view the most important is not to talk only about national values. It is really necessary in Poland. We must not continue to think that patriotism means only fighting with other people. Forming students’ national identity is one of the main duties at school but the romantic way of understanding patriotism has to be changed. It is very dangerous in our century. Many researchers also write about it. It is a very important problem of literary studies. I also present suggestions to work with Reduta Ordona in primary school and in junior high school. There are different ideas presented in methodical literature as well as my own suggestions.

It has been two decades since Słownik literatury popularnej edited by Tadeusz Żabski and the monography of Anna Martuszewska on the meaning of popular literature were published, and we are today pleased to notice that “the third kind” has not only provided space for scientific discourse, but has also become one of the leading objects of reflection and didactics in the academic world. Despite constant efforts to build coherent and possibly capacious methodological apparatus to study popular literature, it is still hard to find a universal key to conducting research in this scope. This certainly is a consequence of reaching out to various disciplines and instruments developed by various methodologies, enforced by broad spectrum of influence of popular literature: from the text itself to all kinds of artistic forms (graphic arts, comics, cinema, media, new media) and cultural practices (ritualization, theater, performance). One of the research proposals is cultural comparability, enrooted in the American school of comparative study, which analyses the text within its entire cultural image. The point of interest is the moment of “reading” literary, cultural phenomena as well as other human activities in the world, based on their interactions. Comparability uses tools developed on the grounds of post-structural literary studies to confront the text with other cultural narratives, thus opening it in a discursive manner to other than literary interpretative contexts, which manifest their creative power and vitality.

Since 1948, Palestinian topics have been adopted by writers from different Arabic countries and have acted as a kind of political manifesto. By 1967 they were dominated by secularist views, primarily nationalist and socialist. The defeat of the Arab armies in the war with Israel in 1967 was followed by an ideological crisis that, in later years, resulted in the rise of fundamentalist sentiments. Religion marginalised the old socialist or pan-Arabic ideas and again became an important element of social discourse and the new Arab identity. The popularisation of the Islamic ideology changed the categorisation of the Palestinian conflict from secular into religious. The article examines – on the basis of the novel Umar yazharu fi al-Quds by Nagib al-Kilani – the role which literature played in the process of building a new historical consciousness through the dissemination of Muslim symbols, terms and arguments.

Strategies of disavowal and rejection of the proximate and distant past differ depending on the intensity of the ideologising processes in the structure of the phenomenon. The systemic mechanism of ritual burial and announcement of the end of “bad past, bad times” includes a number of phases (from construction to reconstruction). This paper examines the strategies under the first of these phases (1944–1956), during which the process of incorporating an external matrix created in revolutionary conditions (Soviet culture) into local culture/literature was the strongest. The practice consists of an unconditional transfer from the model of a maximum number of factors which sanction acts of disavowing the proximate and distant past and legitimise subjection to the chosen / ideal system (denial/discreditation of the old world order, new genres, a new way to explain the past, clear vision of the future). „Przeszłości ślad dłoń nasza zmiata”. The main aim of this article is to show how Gaétan Soucy’s 1998 bestselling novel The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches both extends and complicates the Canadian Gothic tradition. The first part focuses onCanada as a “haunted culture,” and attempts to identify the ghosts which hauntCanada and make themselves manifest in the nation’s gothic literature. I ponder the postcolonial character of Canadian Gothic, and reflect on the representations of monstrous nature inCanada’s early fiction. A short section is devoted to the characteristics of French-Canadian Gothic. The second part of my article proposes a reading of Soucy’s novel which concentrates on gothic transgressions the story revolves around. One of my assumptions is that the novel invites ecocritical and ecofeminist interpretations, and that its representations of nature also reveal the subversive character of the text whose narrator, by her own admission, locates herself on the threshold of things.

To illustrate this hypothesis, three texts will serve as a reference for this purpose: Dans le ventre du Congo (2021) by Blaise Ndala which tells the story of the conflictual relationship between Belgium and the colonized Congo; Les Impatientes (2020) by Djaili Amadou Amal which evokes the problem of violence against Cameroonian women, while La dynastie des boiteux. Zoonomia (2018) by Bessora deals with the figure of a Reunionese naturalist explorer of colonized Africa.

Polish literature has been present in China since 1906. The first Polish literary text translated into Chinese was Latarnik (The Lighthouse Keeper) by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Contemporary fans of Polish novella and novel were reading indirect translations since the Chinese novelists, who did not speak Polish, usually based their translations on the Japanese versions. In my years of contact with Chinese culture and literature, I have never come across any mention of translations of Polish or Eastern European children’s literature. Once I started my research into this subject, I quickly learned what caused the lack of information on it. It turned out that it was quite difficult to find any credible information on what has been translated, in what volume it was published and what the reactions of young readers were.As a result, this article is merely an introduction to the research on Polish children’s literature in People’s Republic of China and focuses almost exclusively on latest publications, i.e. released in the twenty-first century. To a significant extent, it is based on data collected from people actively participating in promoting Polish culture in China via email. I received a lot of valuable data from Wojciech Widłak – one of the authors whose children’s books were published in China. The article is practically a short catalogue of books published on the Chinese market, but it also presents the few reviews I have managed to find in Chinese sources. There is also a presentation of the translators and it is worth noting that Polish children’s literature has been taken care of by the best among those studying Polish literature in China. I hope that this article will be the first of many on the position, popularity and reception of Polish children’s literature in China.

Opis:
The article analyzes three pieces of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish contemporary literature on the subject of “the death in Venice”. The authors of the works, by referring to the literary tradition, consciously strengthen the myth of the "the city of death". In their interpretations this myth has two dimensions: the general and the individual. In the general dimension the vision of a dying beauty and fading power encourages reflection on the transitory nature of civilization. The individual dimension is based on the sense of identification of a dying character with a "dying" city, i.e. Venice.

Opis:
The article presents a portrait of one of the most important witnesses of the Holocaust in Hungary, the author of Emberszag and „the legend of Ernő Szép”, who would greet people by saying „I was Ernő Szép”. In his innovative work, the writer draws upon his skills as both reporter and observer. The way he can intricately interweave different episodes confirms his great artistic ability, but most of all it highlights the essential need to accord to the Jewish history all the respect it deserves. Szép achieves this through adopting an anthropocentric perspective – each scene focuses primarily on human emotions and habits, whilst the key context of all the events – the Shoah – is shifted to the background. Without overloading the text with too many dates or legal references, Szép pays careful attention to facts which gives readers a perfect opportunity to recreate the successive stages of the Jewish history in 1944 Budapest.

The work at hand deals with the art of orations in Jan Bielski’s Ćwiczenia krasomówsko-prawne. The analysis focused on the author›s remarks concerning rhetoric, which are to be found in the foreword, and in selected “juridical cases”. Rhetoric is perceived as helpful field in getting honours. Moreover, it is useful in unmasking the falsehood and reconciling antagonists. On the other hand, rhetoric is also shown as the “craft” which can serve vile, godless cells and which, “uncontrollable”, causes the disaster. Bielski’s Ćwiczenia... made young people aware, that acquaintance of rhetoric has a real influence on the outside world.

Opis:
Miłosz’s volume Światło dzienne (Daylight, 1953) is conventionally read by critics as political poetry deeply engaged with history. The article offers a corrective to this traditional reading by interpreting the volume as interplay of European and American influences. As a European poet, Miłosz had experienced the violent demise of ideals at the foundation of the Old World. Światło dzienne is, therefore, at one level, an elegiac volume in which both persons and ideas are mourned. On the other hand, to the extent that America continues for Miłosz the noble ideas abandoned in Europe, he cannot accept what he regards as their misguided or perverse incarnations. This explains the emotional climate of the whole volume, with its dominant mood of disappointment, anger and refusal of reconciliation. Światło dzienne is American in its outlook in taking seriously America’s status as a superpower and its influence on the future direction of global history. It is anti-American, however, in identifying America’s perceived failures to live up to the post-war challenge for human civilization in general and the consequent dangers. The article intends to assess Miłosz’s debt to English-language poetry in this volume in light of his personal notes from his reading and translation work at the time.

The aim of the article is to analyse musical ways of creating a text. Based on the prose of Bruno Schulz, the author examines the organization of the sound layer in terms of sound techniques used in them (rhythm, lead motif, instrumentation, anagram, situational rhythm, polyphony). Describing the musical entanglements of the text not only shows Schulz’s ingenious writing technique, but also allows to read his work anew – including the modestly discussed perspective of his work.
