Opis:
In Robert Musil’s fragmentary novel, The Man Without Qualities, history and poetics connect in a very potent manner. A salient example of this is the famous sentence, “It was a fine day in August 1913”, where societal upheaval is portrayed. Meteorological information contrasts and corresponds with scien-tific facts and documented historical events. Above all, it is Musil’s ironic style which brings the text’s literary power of commentary to the fore.

The point of departure of this paper is Jürgen Habermas concept of knowledge constitutive interests and its further elaboration in the so-called reconstructive sciences. The reconstructive knowledge encompasses descriptive empirical statements, relative normative statements following from explication of cultural beliefs, and normative statements raising universal validity claims. The analysis of such model of knowledge creation leads to a conclusion that the responsibility of contemporary expert cultures is to mediate between scientific research, common-sense cultural beliefs, and moral or legal assumptions that are recognized as justified and valid

Opis:
Since knowledge was recognized as a key for innovativeness and consequently for the growth of countries and regions, policies of particular countries have emphasized stimulation of processes of knowledge generation and diffusion. Universities, in particular, have been recognized as a significant source of valuable knowledge whereas cooperation between science and industry as a key for the inventiveness of enterprises. The aim of this paper is to determine to what extent innovations generated by enterprises patenting in Poland base on academic knowledge and whether enterprises which make greater use of stocks of academic knowledge when creating their inventions are also more innovative (i.e. they can boast a greater number of patents). The co-called patent-citation method has been used to determine the extent to which the inventiveness of enterprises is based on knowledge originating from the area of science and it consists in an analysis of patent documents for the location of sources of knowledge that these enterprises cite. More precisely, knowledge sources have been investigated which inventors from enterprises patenting in Poland referred to in their patent descriptions, with the focus on whether the cited knowledge belonged to the stock of university knowledge. An analysis of 389 patent applications of 20 enterprises patenting in Poland in 2005-2011 for the origin of knowledge that was used by these enterprises to make an invention allowed for the formulation of several basic conclusions. Firstly, out of the total stock of knowledge that was used by enterprises while making their own inventions, only 15.03% were stocks of academic knowledge, with the inventiveness of enterprises based to a larger extent on Polish than foreign knowledge stocks of science. Secondly, the extent to which the inventiveness of enterprises was based on knowledge coming from public laboratories of scientific units was rather differentiated over the course of the period covered by the analysis, without showing neither upward nor downward trend. And lastly, the innovativeness of enterprises as measured by the number of obtained patents did not depend on neither whether or to what extent enterprises made use of scientific achievements during the creation of inventions. It is so because on the one hand the inventiveness of only few of the most innovative enterprises included in the analysis was based on knowledge originating from the area of science to a larger extent than usually. On the other hand, the use of only academic knowledge in the process of generation of inventions does not have to translate into success in the form of a large number of patents.

The author classifies researchers in the field of literature studies, historians and popular science journalists as non-specialists in diachronic language studies. Having done so, the author analyses texts written by these authors as regards their views on historical studies in Slavic linguistics, historical grammar, history of Polish, onomastics, etymology and history of proper names. The list of analysed researchers and writers includes: Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz, Krzysztof Masłoń, Leszek Szaruga (Witold Wirpsza), Jerzy Krasucki and Agnieszka Krzemińska. The paper ends with an appeal addressed to experts in diachronic language studies that they follow such outstanding Polish researchers and linguistic knowledge promoters as Jan Michał Rozwadowski, Kazimierz Nitsch, Stanisaaw Urbańczyk or Marian Kucała in popularizing diachronic language studies among the wide public.

Opis:
We are in a state of impending crisis. And the fault lies in part with academia. For two centuries or so, academia has been devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and technological know-how. This has enormously increased our power to act which has, in turn, brought us both all the great benefits of the modern world and the crises we now face. Modern science and technology have made possible modern industry and agriculture, the explosive growth of the world’s population, global warming, modern armaments and the lethal character of modern warfare, destruction of natural habitats and rapid extinction of species, immense inequalities of wealth and power across the globe, pollution of earth, sea and air, even the AIDS epidemic (AIDS being spread by modern travel). All these global problems have arisen because some of us have acquired unprecedented powers to act, via science and technology, without also acquiring the capacity to act wisely. We urgently need to bring about a revolution in universities so that the basic intellectual aim becomes, not knowledge merely, but rather wisdom – wisdom being the capacity to realize what is of value in life, for oneself and others, thus including knowledge and technological know-how, but much else besides. The revolution we require would put problems of living at the heart of the academic enterprise, the pursuit of knowledge emerging out of, and feeding back into, the fundamental intellectual activity of proposing and critically assessing possible actions, policies, political programmes, from the standpoint of their capacity to help solve problems of living. This revolution would affect almost every branch and aspect of academic inquiry.

This text is an attempt at a more general look at twentieth‑century philosophical reflection on science conceived as persistent trials to eliminate the non‑eliminateable, i.e. valuations. In this article, I recall the most important concepts of knowledge developed in the twentieth‑century philosophy of science by exposing assumed axiology in, among other things: the Vienna Circle, Karl Raimund Popper’s falsificationism, the historical and social approach of Thomas S. Kuhn’s paradigm, and the concept of the ideals of knowledge by Stefan Amsterdamski. I argue that the axiology, and more broadly philosophy is an indelible component of each accepted concept of scientific knowledge. Each concept of knowledge assumes a form of its valuation.

Opis:
Cognition is meant as the process of acquiring knowledge from the world. This process is supposed to happen within agents, which build such knowledge with the purpose to use it to determine their actions on the world. Following Peircean ideas, we postulate that such knowledge is encoded by means of signs. According to Peirce, signs are anything that can be used to represent anything else. Also, for Peirce, to represent means to be able to generate another sign, called the interpretant of the original sign, which still holds the same power of interpretability, I.e, its power to be transformed into a new sign, holding this same power. This happens through a processcalled semiosis, the process by which a sign is transformed into an interpretant. This whole process is performed with the aim of subsidizing the agent in deciding its behavior. So, even though the semiosis process has the power to continue infinitely, it usually stops whenever the generated interpretant brings enough information in order for the agent to effectively act in the world. We take signals to be the substract of signs. Signals are any physical property, which can be measured and captured by the agent, by means of its sensors. This includes any kind of internal memory the agent is able to have access, in order to operate. In this sense, signs can be both in the world (if these signals come from sensors) and within the own agent’s mind (if signals come from an internal memory). We understandan agent’s mind as the agents’ control system. In either case, signals can be abstracted as numbers. Not simply numbers, but numbers coming from specific sensors or specific memories. Using ideas from Peircean philosophy, in this work we postulate a pathway, in which signals, collected by either sensors or memory, can be organized in such a way that they can be effectively used as knowledge, in order for an agent to be able to decide its actions on the world, on the pursuit of its internal motivations. We postulate that agents identify and create a model of the world based on possibilities, existents, and laws, and based on this model, they are able to decide an action that maximizes the chance for the world to gain a shape, which the agents intend for it to be. This theory is postulated particularly for the case of artificial autonomous agents, meant to be constructed by engineering artifacts.

Crossing borders: between literature and science – Italian culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has offered significant examples of renewal through crossing boundaries between different disciplines. Several writers (Levi, Calvino, Gadda, Sinisgalli, Del Giudice, Giordano, Arpaia, Odifreddi) have overcome the dichotomy between the two cultures that was denounced by Charles Snow in 1959. Sixty years after the famous essay by Snow, the paper will show several examples of connections between literature and science, by using the concept of the “four frontier customs”: “the transit”, “the trespass”, “the alliance”, and “the conflict”.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the current status of academic humanities (specifically philosophy) in the modern system of science and higher education. The recent structural reforms carried out in this sector in Poland had the ambitious goal of bringing the Polish universities in line with the current trends observed in academic education systems in developed countries, and improving the global competitiveness of Polish science. The article is an attempt at a critical confrontation of these strategic intentions with the actual effects achieved through the reforms, primarily in the context of the profound transformations of the very concept of science that has historically accompanied these changes. In particular, the paper presents a methodological analysis of the impact of the postulated new interpretation of research on the scientific status to date – and the prospects for further development – of traditional humanistic disciplines.

The article discusses the teacher’s awareness and professional knowledge, emphasizing the characteristics and changes taking place in the modern world and their influence on teaching. Self-definition of the teacher’s consciousness has been developed based on the theory of Illeris (2003. p. 227) as a subjective process, which affects the way the teacher operates and assimilates information in the workplace through social interaction. The article presents refers to the concept of “teacher consciousness” as an interdisciplinary concept that characterizes the challenges of the modern world with an emphasis on the development of science and technology, On this background, the importance of the view of the “big picture” (Khenin, 2007: 36–39) stands out in the development of broad pedagogical awareness in the planning of teachers’ training. Teacher awareness is an acquired learning tool that enables cognitive ability to extract raw reality from the interpretation of attitudes and beliefs and may determine the school culture and its affiliation to a traditional or an innovative stream.

Scientific knowledge has nowadays became one of the most important factors which foster innovation-based development of economies. The key role here play universities and higher education institutions which – under market pressure – also change their attitude to the knowledge creation. Originally focused on their educational duties, nowadays universities have became the real research leaders – ready to answer the market needs. The growing importance of new knowledge application to the industry, the tightening university-industry links, the impact of industry funding on knowledge production within universities or even the emer-gence of industrial knowledge, show how important private funding becomes at present. On the other hand the dominant portion of universities research activity is covered by public funds which, from another point of view, is important for the future prospects of modern economies. The aim of the article is to show the de-pendence of private and public funding of academic innovations. Methods used are: critical analysis of the literature, analysis of the statistical data.

The article presents an epistemological and partially methodological analysis of cognitive science as a scientific discipline, created as a result of the transformations that took place in the philosophical and psychological concepts of the mind and cognition, which were carried out with the aid of tools and methods of modelling as well as through simulating human cognitive processes and consciousness. In order to describe this interdisciplinary (transdisciplinary) science, and its positions, as well as the stages and directions of its development, it makes use of the epistemological model formulated by Michel Foucault, in which he draws attention to social, ideological and technological conditions of scientific knowledge (episteme). The opinions of the leading creators and critics of cognitive science, such as George A. Miller, Howard Gardner, Margaret Boden and José Luis Bermúdez are referenced to and analyzed with the use of this model. The article shows the epistemologically and methodologically divergent status of cognitive science, as well as its cognitive and institutional conditions and challenges, which stand before it after half a century of intensive development.
W artykule przeprowadzono epistemologiczną i częściowo metodologiczną analizę kognitywistyki (cognitive science) jako dyscypliny naukowej, która powstała wskutek przeobrażeń w filozoficznych i psychologicznych koncepcjach umysłu i poznania poprzez zastosowanie w nich narzędzi i metod modelowania oraz symulacji ludzkich procesów poznawczych i świadomości. Do opisu powstania tej interdyscyplinarnej (transdyscyplinarnej) nauki, jej etapów, stanowisk i kierunków rozwoju przyjmuje się model epistemologiczny sformułowany przez Michela Foucaulta, w którym zwraca on uwagę na społeczne, ideologiczne i technologiczne uwarunkowania wiedzy naukowej (episteme). Dzięki niemu referowane i analizowane są opinie o kognitywistyce takich czołowych jej twórców i krytyków, jak George A. Miller, Howard Gardner, Margaret Boden i José Luis Bermúdez. Ukazany został zróżnicowany epistemologiczno-metodologiczny status kognitywistyki (cognitive science), jak też jej poznawcze i instytucjonalne uwarunkowania oraz wyzwania, przed którymi stoi po półwieczu intensywnego rozwoju.

The field technique of photographic identification enabled scientists to individually identify and follow cetacea (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) through their life-cycle. Photographic identification relies on portable, highquality photographic equipment and the naturally occurring markings of individual whales. Being able to identify cetacea individually has enabled scientists to engage in long-term field studies comparable to field studies of land mammals. Further, carrying out long-term field studies has contributed to an exponential growth of scientific knowledge of cetacea and has significantly altered the public’s connection(s) to scientists and cetacea. This article is based on interviews, published material, and observations made by the author at different research settings. It describes how photography and the use of naturally occurring markings of individual cetacea combined to produce photographic identification as a research technique. As a study within the sociology of science and scientific knowledge, this article highlights the emergent character of scientific research; that is, the emergent confluence of cumulative knowledge, theory, method, and empirical observation.

In the center of author’s attention there is the problem of forming a modern education system in the knowledge society. Education system should be considered in a context of a systematic method of approach, the essence of which is that relatively independent components are considered not separately, but in their interconnection, in the system with other components. In the center of the author’s attention there is a fundamental problem of the system interaction between modern science and education in the knowledge society. In the modern world, there is a radical difference between science and traditional forms of culture – scientific knowledge plays a significant role in solving technical, industrial, and organization management problems. The majority of people’s fields of activity in the society are becoming rationalized and coordinated. Science and higher education have the same social functions: the manufacture and transfer of knowledge. Knowledge becomes a basis for the organization of the people, a necessary condition of their joint activity. In the increasing degree, it acquires the significance of an integrating factor in social life, substituting traditional forms of people’s association.

The predictions of science fiction play an important part in the cultural landscape of contemporary western culture, being integral to the popular culture (novels, movies, TV series, graphic novels). The essay focuses on the use of the scientific discourse and scientific knowledge in the chosen science fiction narratives by Stanisław Lem, Walter M. Miller jr., John Brunner, and Paolo Bacigalupi.

The article presents different definitionsfrom different disciplines for the concept of “Awareness” and the central role of science in shaping the way teachers think and change their perceptions. In a period of the lack of stability, diversity, and heterogeneity in academic, cultural, and socioeconomic terms, teaching and education become a complicated and demanding tasks for the teacher. The teacher who meets the complex educational challenges findsit difficultto adjust to accelerated and endless social, scientific, and technological changes and to change the perception of his role from a source of knowledge to a transfer of knowledge. Most teachers of our time were not trained to be conscious of the influencesof globalization on the lives of the students and communities, differences, equality, and globalization that characterize society as a whole and are required of the teachers in society of our time. The author definesthe teachers’ consciousness as an Interdisciplinary Category. The increase of the teachers’ awareness of the processes of thinking and doing, as a result of the internal and external events around them, may help teachers map their abilities, needs, and expectations, understand the factors of their behavior, plan their course for the future, and definefor themselves goals commensurate with the requirements. The awareness grants the teachers an opportunity to take responsibility over the knowledge and thus may change the school experience.

The aim of this research is to analyze anxiety, knowledge, and belief toward e-learning acceptance, especially by science teachers in high schools in Aceh, Indonesia. About 117 teachers were randomly selected for this study. A questionnaire was used to collect data, and analyzed using the Likert scale. The results indicate that most teachers view the use of e-learning in teaching science to be positive. Despite the fact that only half of them are knowledgeable in the use of media and have concerns about some negative effects of e-learning on students, they still believed in the usefulness of e-learning in science education. Hence, more related research is recommended to further corroborate the findings of this study.

Knowledge management is a process aimed at enriching and effectively using knowledge assets in various areas of business operations. It also applies to manufacturing enterprises that offer tangible products combining it with the art of processing information and intellectual assets into added value for the customer. A characteristic feature of manufacturing enterprises is assigning their employees a double role: a knowledge user and, at the same time, an internal source of specialist knowledge. In the situation of dynamically changing market conditions, there is an additional need to acquire new knowledge (in practice: often to buy knowledge) from the company’s environment. A solution in the above-mentioned scope in Poland may be digital repositories of science assets as tools for knowledge transfer to SMEs. Research institutes are an important element in the process of knowledge transfer from scientific units to the economy (e.g. they offer their services in open access). The paper presents the concept of such a repository preceded by a diagnosis of the existing state, an analysis of the recipients of the deposited content and the examination and analysis of the requirements of potential users of the repository.

The article is intended to present arguments for the cultivation of philosophy as “sapiential” or wisdom-oriented knowledge whereby human knowledge is realized most fully. The author claims, first, that philosophy has indispensable heuristic value because it considers the understanding of the world and man in the context of the question “why;” the search for an answer to this fundamental question is an expression of the human person’s natural inclination to explain the reality in which he lives. Secondly, he argues that classical philosophy is not only the explanation of the reality, but it is a way of forming man; therefore it is a proposal for a method of philosophical education that is an interesting alternative to contemporary forms of practicism. The reflections are based on the legacy of the Lublin Philosophical School (Poland).

The aim of the article is to show how thinking and acting are closely interrelated, and because of that, methodological disabilities in practicing any science, and social sciences and humanities in particular, have enormous practical effects. According to this thesis, both the science which wants to be directly related to the practice understood as multiplying the profit, as well as the one that programmatically separates from such an activity, have certain practical consequences. The main question that is ignored by both ways of practicing science concerns ethical effects of all human activities, especially scientific and economic ones. It causes excessive influence of emotional people –mainly those who are greedy and prone to aggression – on the functioning of societies. Science cannot change them, it can only be used by them. The inability to change their negative impact on societies was already ascertained by Plato. The only solution to the situation is to return to the historical principle of limiting the political influence of people who are guided by passions and to create an alternative economy that takes into account the knowledge of human nature, based on reasonableness and not greed.

The comparison of the picture of social sciences at the beginning of the 20th century and their state at the start of the 21st leads to the discovery of unexpected changes, contradictions and paradoxes typical of post-modernism. A question is addressed: do all these changes, which bring about the discussion of the post-modern era, cover also sciences, and social sciences in particular. Paradoxically, the post-modern era of informationalism and a society of knowledge is not conducive to the autonomy of science and consequently disturbs the frail and delicate autonomy of social sciences. The post-modern phenomenon of departing from the modernist division of sciences and scientific disciplines manifests itself in theoretically and methodologically dubious cultural, social, political, and other studies. One can look at that phenomenon as a reaction to excessive fragmentation and autonomization in social sciences and an attempt of integrating reconstruction aiming also at eliminating the autonomy of theory in relation to practice.

The paper presents a cognitive, educational and philosophical strategy, sometimes called reconstructionism (as it denotes e orts to reconstruct knowledge and science), proposed by a number of Muslim authors as a proper reaction to modern science. The pre‐modern background for this reaction is highlighted. Two examples are given: the Islamic science idea by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, and the Islamization of knowledge project by Ismail Raji al‐Faruqi. Their critique of Euro‐Atlantic science is based on its perceived e ects on society and morality (secularization, imperialism and colonialism, cruelty towards labora‐ tory animals, etc.) as well as on tawhid, the Islamic idea of unity. Their main postulates are to stop calling modern science objective and universal because this is a purely Western product; to produce an alternative indigenous science; to make science conform with Islamic doctrine and ethics; to reintroduce holism and sapiential aspects of knowledge into science. Critical voices, both Muslim and non‐Muslim, are quoted. All in all, reconstructionism is evaluated as a movement understandable to some extent but ine cient and idiosyncratic, unable to start objective and interesting research programmes on its own.

A particular aspect of theological knowledge, which arises from the intellectual search based on faith, is the exceptionally favorable opportunity it provides to overcome the antimonies of science and life. After all, theology not only engages reason and faith but also the will and love. On this basis, scientia fidei (science of faith) claims to make sense of everything, meaning of wisdom, at the center of which can be found truth and life, which both accord with it. Moreover, any systematic reflection on faith should take place within specific context that is understood as its basic challenge. This does not mean that it is possible to evaluate or correct the faith according to so-called “life experience”, but rather that life can be ordered according to faith. In other words, any interest in human agere (act) should not lose sight of esse (being). From this point of view, science of faith should not only resolve the tension between rational knowing and mystery, but also protect against one-sidedness and superficiality through competent and particular knowledge that defines who man is and determines how he should act. A utilitarian approach to empirical science as well as contemporary philosophy, which does not consider wisdom and the question of truth, is incompetence in this regard.

This small study conducted by an experienced First aid instructor and science educator sought to establish a baseline pilot study of what actions were observed and identified as injuries and subsequent first aid. A class of 29 four-year-old children were shown 8 nine inch tall Teddy Bears, dressed as World War I pilots. Each Teddy Bear with a simulated injury was shown by the researcher to the child and asked, what could be done to help each injured Teddy. Their responses were recorded by writing and analysed by a read and re-read process with a goal to establish the categories of the child’s rationale for their responses for reason of injuries and actions. A simple appropriate approach was then discussed with each child. The data indicated that children’s main solution to treatment was to ‘put on a bandaid’. The results showed that children had little comprehension of further treatment.

The significance of scientific journals in the dissemination and creation of science cannot be overestimated. For over 350 years, journals have been a crucial platform for the prompt publication of research findings and the exchange of scientific ideas among research centres worldwide. Journals serve not only to disseminate scientific achievements but also to provide researchers with the substantive base for new discoveries and achievements. The aim of this article is to examine the present state and future potential of regional social science journals in terms of presenting and disseminating research findings, as well as promoting international collaboration. The objective is to achieve this through a comprehensive analysis of the Journal of Pedagogy, Innovation and New Technologies, which has been a source of daily concerns, problems, and satisfaction for us for almost a decade. The analysis method employed involves examining texts published in IJPINT and the documents available to the editors. The article addresses the following questions: (1) In what circumstances was the journal created and what priorities determined its formula and organizational solutions? (2) What are your publication achievements in terms of quantity and quality? (3) What has hindered and what has supported the work of the journal and the implementation of its mission? The purpose of this position paper is to stimulate further discussion on the condition of social science journals and the type of government support they receive.

Science is not only a process of knowledge acquisition, but also a way in which individuals fulfill their cognitive needs. Its main aim is creation, construction of something new. Scientific knowledge takes place in the mind of a researcher and its key feature is an interdisciplinary character. The debate on distinguishing scientific from non-scientific cognition is still valid, especially in the field of economic sciences. The aim of this paper is to analyze the essence of cognition and selected scientific canons with regard to economics. The author assumes that the use of the canons of science and the capacities of the researcher determine the outcome of cognitive processes. The study includes a description of such concepts as cognition, scientific explanation, types of methods and processes of scientific cognition, and paradigm. This is designed to make it easier to solve problems in a scientific manner, primarily for all the researchers in the field of economics.

The article discusses, on selected examples from the history of the Polish Philology Student Research Group at the Catholic University of Lublin, the model and the main activities of a student research group. The author refers to the tradition of this kind of association and describes its structure and activities in order to show the importance and the multifarious function of a well-working student research group at the university. The text emphasizes the significance of the presence of a Polish Philology student research group which usually contributes to the promotion of the entire milieu of the university by integrating its different faculties. A well functioning Alma Mater eventually becomes the place of encounter of the light emanating from two sources: from above, ex cathedra, from the masters and professors, and from below, from the students active in their research groups. The paper focuses of the role of scientific knowledge in the processes of conducting reforms and public policy. The case of higher education and science reforms in Poland carried out over the period of 25 years of new political, social and economic conditions shows primary knowledge negligence of the reformers which undoubtedly affected the nature of the current higher education and science system, reformed several times already. It also furnishes some recommendations on how these processes may be improved. In the empirical dimension, the starting point was the concept of metaknowledge (i.e knowledge about knowledge), encompassing three aspects connected with generating and using knowledge in the context of higher education and science reforms, which are ringfenced basing on different methodologies: (1) knowledge about reforming – theoretical literature query; (2) knowledge in reforming – analysis of experts’ reports; (3) knowledge of reformers – results of studies on the processes of learning and knowledge management in public administration. The postulate of a broader use of scientific knowledge in reform processes is an attempt to indicate one of the key directions to follow when repairing the higher education and science system. For that reason, the role of social sciences has been highlighted, including, in particular, the role of sociologists in reform processes (as theoreticians and experts in the area of higher education and science). Furthermore, the need for sociologists to go back to the role of social expertsengineers has been signalled.

Opis:
This paper discusses the concept of Technology Assessment (TA) and its rationale in light of complex relations between technology, market and democracy. The author points out their limitations: market proliferates discoveries and inventions but distorts mechanism of cultural limitations of the process of scientific innovation; democracy is in deep accord with scientific meritocracy, individualism and creativity, but on the other hand it slowly loses its control grip over science; technology is predominantly responsible for positive public representation of science, but it is guilty of most terrifying and problematic inventions. In conclusion, the author argues that only taking into account the complex hybrid of science, technology, market and democracy may provide understanding and control over technological innovations.

Academics and faculty members are entangled in many interests. Selfless science for cognitive purposes is a thing of the past. There is a constant game of the power over knowledge. Apart from scientists, many entities with various interests are participants of the game. They are: politicians, officials, academic administration, research sponsors, accreditation agencies, publishers, resort scientific institutes, industry, business. The scientists themselves sometimes work for the truth and sometimes they work for profit; they create knowledge which is public property, or when they are employed commercially, e.g. by the industry, they create private knowledge. This paper presents five factors which may contribute to restricting the cognitive autonomy of the scientists.

Opis:
In response to current economic theories, a special emphasis is put on the need for continuous acquisition of knowledge. The stock of knowledge, however, is growing very dynamically, which leads to shifts in the scientific process. There are shifts in individual innovative productivity, which is manifested by the fact that the contribution of young scientists to science is getting smaller and – as a result of deepening of specialization – the dominance of teamwork increases. These two fundamental changes taking place in science should imply changes in the approach to science policy. In the face of “ageing” of innovators, policy makers should put more emphasis on creating incentives for young people to enter scientific careers (higher wages in science, more attractive grants at the peak of scientific career; contrary to popular beliefs, grant systems should not be created specifically for young people). A measure increasing the interest in scientific careers could also be a shortening of education which, however, is difficult to achieve. A response of science policy to the increasing dominance of teamwork should be (1) implementation of changes in the remuneration system for researchers, which should evolve from individual-oriented rewarding to team-oriented rewarding, as well as (2) implementation of changes in the evaluation system, which should be aimed towards team evaluation.

The aim of this article is to analyze the geographical metaphors used in Ephraim Chambers’ Cyclopædia (1728). The English cyclopaedist combined the geographical and colonial rhetorical figures with the systematic divisions of knowledge and science. Cyclopædia, which is the modern 18th-century encyclopaedia rooted in the spirit of British empiricism, does not only collect the existing knowledge but also aims to reach out to what is yet unknown, unrecognized. Thus, the parts of the world which are unknown and unchartered become validated as internal territories of the encyclopaedic space.

Opis:
At the end of the 20th century, the theory of art history shifted from the area of methodology understood as a normative field of the philosophy of science to the area of the social practice of constructing knowledge. The term “art historical methodology” itself became trivialized when its meaning was detached from the horizon of epistemology and became extremely inclusive, encompassing all methods practised in the discipline, with a method being considered to be the use of any theory as a tool of interpretation. As a consequence, the basic problem of scientific methodology, which is the critical assessment of explanatory and interpretive theories due to the value of their justification, is not addressed in the self-reflection of contemporary art history. The retreat from the rigors of methodology was related to the reception of structuralism, initiated by Ernst Gombrich in the book Art and Illusion. Popper’s model of situational logic as a method of historical explanation of works of art was transformed into a structuralist model, referring to constant rules of pictorial representation, symbolization and communication. Michael Fried and Norman Bryson formulated their own theories of invariant rules defining the necessary initial conditions for the formation and reception of pictures, so that individual works could be interpreted in terms of these rules and, as a result, confirm the general theory, which created a vicious circle. Structuralist theories did not function as hypotheses requiring critical testing, but as interpretive codes that served to read each work of art within their own conceptual system. The next step in the process of the reception of structuralism was the development of theories defining general rules that would govern the discursive practice of art history, and the detection of which at the basis of this practice would discredit or invalidate its epistemological dimension. Hayden White’s narrativism was the theory that historical discourse is subject to narrative conventions, not to the laws of logic and the rigors of methodology that serve to limit the pool of alternative explanations or interpretations. This theory was intended to justify the pluralism of equal versions of history as a politically correct idea, appropriate for a “democratic” model of knowledge. Theorists developing White’s theses in the field of art history claimed that the discursive practice of this discipline was not governed by methodological rules but by political motivations (Keith Moxey) or aesthetic principles of artwriting (David Carrier). After the phase of open denial of the dependence of the art history discourse on methodology, the theory of the discipline turned into an analysis of techniques for building this discourse, which no longer included methodological issues, as in James Elkins’ book Our Beautiful, Dry, and Distant Texts. A critical review of theories separating art history from methodology leads to the conclusion that they are untenable. It is impossible to maintain the scientific status of our discipline without respecting the principles of methodology founded in the contemporary philosophy of science.

Actor-Network Theory has proven to be highly successful, fulfilling much of its early theoretical and methodological promise. Proponents of ANT have argued, among other things, that an acceptance of the specific (techno-)social ontology which assumes consistent relativity of beings and anti-essentialism will enable us to address the aporia that are haunting sociology. The authors argue that, sociological applications of ANT (at least as regards the dominant understanding of the theory) result in a lowbrow methodology leading to a radical cognitive limitation of the discipline. The text finishes with an attempt to sketch an alternative version of ANT, one with a positivistic inclination opening the path for synthetic sociology.

Applying external scientific knowledge - i.e. knowledge achieved in the field of disciplines and sub-disciplines related to political science - in fulfiling such methodological functions as explanation and prevision (forecasting) is frequently approached in meta-scientific and meta-theoretical considerations as conducted on the ground of the family of scientific disciplines constituted by the sciences of politics. These functions can be ascribed to the purely epistemological aspect of scientific activity, not its institutional and organizational aspects. The dispute regarding the explanatory autonomy of political science is fallacious. From the logical and methodological point of view, the institutional “affiliation” of object knowledge, which constitutes a premise in complex inferences, does not play a role in the fulfilment of the assumed cognitive tasks; what is important instead is its epistemological credibility, as well as the goals of the research strategy selected by a given scholar.

Opis:
The article analyses the phenomenon of lay people engagement in the processes of knowledge creation and their impact on the boundary-work between science and non-science. Basing on the examples of lay people involvement on the three areas: environmental science, medicine and syntethetic biology it is argued that in some cases, in accordance with the model of post-normal science, engaged public is able to modify the protocols of scientific investigation. Thus, analysed cases show that participants from beyond the academic system are capable to bring the meaningful contribution into the processes of knowledge creation. Wider citizens’ involvement in this process is considered as a radical form of democratic participation in the technoscience. To put the light on political consequences of this ongoing transformation, Bruno Latour’s notions “work of translation” and “work of purification” are employed.
