Opis:
The aim of the paper is to remove the ambiguities contained in the 20th Section Bernard Bolzano's 'Paradoxien des Unendlichen'. Conclusion is that Bolzano originally wanted only to present in the 20th Section one of the (many) paradoxes of infinite sets: an infinite set may be equivalent with its subset. The proof in the 20th Section applies only to this property. Later added Bolzano to the text of the 20th Section a generalizing remark. Only this remark suggests that Bolzano anticipated the reflexive (Dedekindian) definition of the infinity set.

Opis:
Infinite-dimensional linear dynamic systems described by infinite matrices are studied. Approximate controllability for systems with lower-diagonal matrices is investigated, whereas observability is studied for systems with row-finite and upper-diagonal matrices. Different necessary or sufficient conditions of approximate controllability and observability of such systems are given. They are used to show dualities between these properties. The theorems on dualities extend the results known for finite-dimensional systems.

Opis:
The general lq-problem with infinite time horizon for well-posed infinite-dimensional systems has been investigated by George Weiss and Martin Weiss and by Olof Staffans with a complement by Kalle Mikkola and Olof Staffans. Our aim in this paper is to present a solution of a general lq-optimal controller synthesis problem for infinite-dimensional systems in factor form. The systems in factor form are an alternative to additive models, used in the theory of well-posed systems, which rely on leading the analysis exclusively within the basic state space. As a result of applying the simplified analysis in terms of the factor systems and an another derivation technique, we obtain an equivalent, however, astonishingly not the same formulae expressing the optimal controller in the time-domain and the method of spectral factorization. The results are illustrated by two examples of the construction of both the optimal control and optimal controller for some standard lq-problems met in literature: a control problem for a class of boundary controlled hyperbolic equations initiated by Chapelon and Xu, to which we give full solution and an example of the synthesis of the optimal control/controller for the standard lq-problem with infinite-time horizon met in the problem of improving a river water quality by artificial aeration, proposed by Zołopa and the author.

The following theorem is proved, answering a question raised by Davies in 1963. A random variable X is geometrically infinitely divisible iff for every p ∈ (0,1) there exists random variable $X_p$ such that $X\stackrel{d}{=} ∑_{k=1}^{T(p)}X_{p,k}$, where $X_{p,k}$'s are i.i.d. copies of $X_p$, and random variable T(p) independent of ${X_{p,1},X_{p,2},...}$ has geometric distribution with the parameter p. In the paper we give some new characterization of geometrically infinitely divisible distribution. The main results concern geometrically strictly semistable distributions which form a subset of geometrically infinitely divisible distributions. We show that they are limit laws for random and deterministic sums of independent random variables.

We consider a class of abstract control system of parabolic type with observation which the state, input and output spaces are Hilbert spaces. The state space operator is assumed to generate a linear exponentially stable analytic semigroup. An observation and control action are allowed to be described by unbounded operators. It is assumed that the observation operator is admissible but the control operator may be not. Such a system is controlled in a feedback loop by a controller with static characteristic being a globally Lipschitz map from the space of outputs into the space of controls. Our main interest is to obtain a perturbation theorem of the small-gain-type which guarantees that null equilibrium of the closed-loop system will be globally asymptotically stable in Lyapunov's sense.

Our aim is to present a solution to a general linear-quadratic (LQ) problem as well as to a Kalman-Yacubovich-Popov (KYP) problem for infinite-dimensional systems with bounded operators. The results are then applied, via the reciprocal system approach, to the question of solvability of some Lur'e resolving equations arising in the stability theory of infinite-dimensional systems in factor form with unbounded control and observation operators. To be more precise the Lur’e resolving equations determine a Lyapunov functional candidate for some closed-loop feedback systems on the base of some properties of an uncontrolled (open-loop) system. Our results are illustrated in details by an example of a temperature of a rod stabilization automatic control system.

Drawing upon studies on the reception of Leopardi’s poetry in Poland, this essay investigates the influence of Leopardi’s works on Maria Konopnicka’s oeuvre as it argues that the influence was key to a certain change of poetic imagery in her works. Through an analysis of poems and other writings by Konopnicka, the article throws a new light on the reception of Leopardi’s poetry in Poland. This subject has so far been rather neglected by critics.

We study the structure of approximate solutions of autonomous variational problems on large finite intervals. In our previous research, which was summarized in Zaslavski (2006b), we showed that approximate solutions are determined mainly by the integrand, and are essentially independent of the choice of time interval and data, except in regions close to the endpoints of the time interval. In the present paper we establish convergence of approximate solutions in regions close to the endpoints of the time intervals.

The concept of a reduction between subsets of a given space is described, giving rise to various complexity hierarchies, studied both in descriptive set theory and in automata theory. We discuss in particular the Wadge and Lipschitz hierarchies for subsets of the Baire and Cantor spaces and the hierarchy of Borel reducibility for finitary relations on standard Borel spaces. The notions of Wadge and Lipschitz reductions are related to corresponding perfect information games.

The main purpose of this work is to propose new notions of equivalence between polynomial matrices that preserve both the finite and infinite elementary divisor structures. The approach we use is twofold: (a) the 'homogeneous polynomial matrix approach', where in place of the polynomial matrices we study their homogeneous polynomial matrix forms and use 2-D equivalence transformations in order to preserve their elementary divisor structure, and (b) the `polynomial matrix approach', where some conditions between the 1-D polynomial matrices and their transforming matrices are proposed.

We define and give the various characterizations of a new subclass of geometrically infinitely divisible random variables. This subclass, called geometrically semistable, is given as the set of all these random variables which are the limits in distribution of geometric, weighted and shifted random sums. Introduced class is the extension of, considered until now, classes of geometrically stable [5] and geometrically strictly semistable random variables [10]. All the results can be straightforward transfered to the case of random vectors in $ℝ^d$.

Given a partition P:L → ω of the lines in $ℝ^n$, n ≥ 2, into countably many pieces, we ask if it is possible to find a partition of the points, $Q:ℝ^n → ω$, so that each line meets at most m points of its color. Assuming Martin's Axiom, we show this is the case for m ≥ 3. We reduce the problem for m = 2 to a purely finitary geometry problem. Although we have established a very similar, but somewhat simpler, version of the geometry conjecture, we leave the general problem open. We consider also various generalizations of these results, including to higher dimension spaces and planes.

Let D be a digraph, V (D) and A(D) will denote the sets of vertices and arcs of D, respectively. A (k, l)-kernel N of D is a k-independent (if u, v ∈ N, u 6= v, then d(u, v), d(v, u) ≥ k) and l-absorbent (if u ∈ V (D) − N then there exists v ∈ N such that d(u, v) ≤ l) set of vertices. A k-kernel is a (k, k −1)-kernel. This work is a survey of results proving sufficient conditions for the existence of (k, l)-kernels in infinite digraphs. Despite all the previous work in this direction was done for (2, 1)-kernels, we present many original results concerning (k, l)-kernels for distinct values of k and l. The original results are sufficient conditions for the existence of (k, l)- kernels in diverse families of infinite digraphs. Among the families that we study are: transitive digraphs, quasi-transitive digraphs, right/left pretransitive digraphs, cyclically k-partite digraphs, κ-strong digraphs, k-transitive digraphs, k-quasi-transitive digraphs.

Employing the Mathieu equations we present a method for construction of Ince-Strutt diagrams, in which no cut-off of the infinite chain of equations for Fourier coefficients is necessary.
Niesingularny opis rezonansu parametrycznego. Na przykładzie równania Mathieu przedstawiamy niesingularną metodę konstrukcji diagramów Incea-Strutta, które obrazują na płaszczyźnie F parametrów równania obszary stabilności i niestabilności. Niesingularność metody została osiągnięta dzięki nie obrywaniu nieskończonych łańcuchów równań dla współczynników Fouriera. Pozwala to na zachowanie pierwotnego charakteru rozważanych równań (zagadnienie początkowe). Przedstawione rozważania sugerują poszerzenie oszarów niestabilności.

The modern method of analysis of the distributed parameter systems relies on the transformation of the dynamical model to an abstract differential equation on an appropriately chosen Banach or, if possible, Hilbert space. A linear dynamical model in the form of a first order abstract differential equation is considered to be well-posed if its right-hand side generates a strongly continuous semigroup. Similarly, a dynamical model in the form of a second order abstract differential equation is well-posed if its right-hand side generates a strongly continuous cosine family of operators. Unfortunately, the presence of a feedback leads to serious complications or even excludes a direct verification of assumptions of the Hille-Phillips-Yosida and/or the Sova-Fattorini Theorems. The class of operators which are similar to a normal discrete operator on a Hilbert space describes a wide variety of linear operators. In the papers [12, 13] two groups of similarity criteria for a given hybrid closed-loop system operator are given. The criteria of the first group are based on some perturbation results, and of the second, on the application of Shkalikov's theory of the Sturm-Liouville eigenproblems with a spectral parameter in the boundary conditions. In the present paper we continue those investigations showing certain advanced applications of the Shkalikov's theory. The results are illustrated by feedback control systems examples governed by wave and beam equations with increasing degree of complexity of the boundary conditions.

Opis:
This paper presents an analysis of some class of bilinear systems that can be applied to biomedical modelling. It combines models that have been studied separately so far, taking into account both the phenomenon of gene amplification and multidrug chemotherapy in their different aspects. The mathematical description is given by an infinite dimensional state equation with a system matrix whose form allows decomposing the model into two interacting subsystems. While the first one, of a finite dimension, can have any form, the other is infinite dimensional and tridiagonal. A methodology of the analysis of such models, based on system decomposition, is presented. An optimal control problem is defined in the l1 space. In order to derive necessary conditions for optimal control, the model description is transformed into an integro-differential form. Finally, biomedical implications of the obtained results are discussed.

Opis:
We introduce the concept of constant 2-labelling of a vertex-weighted graph and show how it can be used to obtain perfect weighted coverings. Roughly speaking, a constant 2-labelling of a vertex-weighted graph is a black and white colouring of its vertex set which preserves the sum of the weights of black vertices under some automorphisms. We study constant 2-labellings on four types of vertex-weighted cycles. Our results on cycles allow us to determine (r, a, b)-codes in $ \mathbb{Z}^2 $ whenever |a − b| > 4, r ≥ 2 and we give the precise values of a and b. This is a refinement of Axenovich’s theorem proved in 2003.

Families of all sets of independent vertices in graphs are investigated. The problem how to characterize those infinite graphs which have arithmetically maximal independent sets is posed. A positive answer is given to the following classes of infinite graphs: bipartite graphs, line graphs and graphs having locally infinite clique-cover of vertices. Some counter examples are presented.

In the first part of the article, Giuseppe Veronese’s concept of arithmetical constructivism is reconstructed from his dispersed remarks. It is pointed out that although for Veronese time is a necessary condition for the construction of natural numbers by an individual subject and the subject cognizes time in an a priori way, it is not a (proto-)intuition of the subject. This is a fundamental difference between the concept proposed by Veronese and the constructivism of Kant and Brouwer. Veronese’s justification of the subject’s ability to cognize infinity, represented in his text by infinite sequences, is analyzed in the second part of the paper. The only condition for the cognition of the infinite sequence is to have a rule according to which its successive terms “follow one another.” The price of the ability to cognize the infinitive “whole” (sequence) may be the uncognizability of certain “parts” (terms of sequence). Infinite sequences, cognizable according to Veronese, are allowed as objects of mathematical research, although they do not meet the condition of constructability.

Many authors discussed the problem of an elastic infinite plate with a curvilinear hole, some of them considered this problem in z-plane and the others in the s-plane. They obtained an exact expression for Goursat's functions for the first and second fundamental problem. In this paper, we use the Cauchy integral method to obtain a solution to the first and second fundamental problem by using a new transformation. Some applications are investigated and also some special cases are discussed.

The aim of this investigation is to construct an adaptive observer and an adaptive compensator for a class of infinite-dimensional plants having a known exogenous input and a structured perturbation with an unknown constant parameter, such as the case of static output feedback with an unknown gain. The adaptive observer uses the nominal dynamics of the unperturbed plant and an adaptation law based on the Lyapunov redesign method. We obtain conditions on the system to ensure uniform boundedness of the estimator dynamics and the parameter estimates, and the convergence of the estimator error. For the case of a known periodic exogenous input we design an adaptive compensator which forces the system to converge to a unique periodic solution. We illustrate our approach with a delay example and a diffusion example for which we obtain convincing numerical results.

This article deals with a Markovian queuing-inventory system (MQIS) under the stochastic modeling technique. The arrival stream of this system is dependent on the present stock level at an instant. Meanwhile, the system focuses on reducing the waiting time of a unit by assuming a queue-dependent service policy (QDSP). The system consists of an infinite waiting hall to receive an arriving unit. The MQIS assumes that no unit of arrival is allowed when the stock level of the system is empty. The discussion of this MQIS runs over the two types of ordering principles named 1) (s, Q) 2) (s, S). According to both ordering principles, the assumed arrival and service patterns have been considered separately and classified as Model-I (M-I) and Model-II (M-II) respectively. The steady state of the system for both M-I and M-II is analysed and resolved under the Neuts matrix-geometric technique. The system performance measures of the system are also computed. The expected cost function of both M-I and M-II are constructed as well. Further, the necessary numerical illustrations are provided and distinguished for M-I and M-II to explore the proposed model. This paper finds the optimum ordering policy to execute the stock-dependent arrival and queue-dependent service strategies.

The elasto-static anti-plane problem of a Dugdale-Barenblatt crack in a welded infinite strip is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation (SIE). The weld joint is modeled as a tri-material structure: the weld metal (WM), the base metal (BM) and the heat-affected zone (HAZ). The HAZ is modeled with an exponentially variable shear modulus. The SIE is solved using Tchebychev polynomials. The influence of the elastic mismatching (the ratio between the shear modulus of WM and BM) and width of the HAZ on the fracture load and on the crack propagation is investigated.

Opis:
In this paper, we present a result on relaxability of partially observed control problems for infinite dimensional stochastic systems in a Hilbert space. This is motivated by the fact that measure valued controls, also known as relaxed controls, are difficult to construct practically and so one must inquire if it is possible to approximate the solutions corresponding to measure valued controls by those corresponding to ordinary controls. Our main result is the relaxation theorem which states that the set of solutions corresponding to ordinary controls is weakly dense in the set of solutions corresponding to relaxed controls. This is presented in Theorem 5.3 after giving some existence results on optimal controls for the infinite dimensional Zakai equation used for its proof.

In this paper, we consider optimal feedback control for stochastc infinite dimensional systems. We present some new results on the solution of associated HJB equations in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. In the process, we have also developed some new mathematical tools involving distributions on Hilbert spaces which may have many other interesting applications in other fields. We conclude with an application to optimal stationary feedback control.

Opis:
Two upper collinear cracks are placed parallel to a lower crack in an infinite orthotropic plane under uniform heat flux perpendicular to the cracks. The surfaces of the cracks are assumed to be thermally insulated. The mixed boundary value conditions with respect to the temperature field and those with respect to the stress field are reduced to dual integral equations using the Fourier transform technique. In order to satisfy the boundary conditions outside the cracks, the differences in temperature and displacement at each crack surface are expanded in a series of functions that are zero outside the cracks. The unknown coefficients in each series are evaluated using the Schmidt method. The stress intensity factors are then calculated numerically for selected crack configurations.

Opis:
New closed form solutions for harmonic vibrations of infinite Kirchhoff plates subjected to a constant harmonic ring load, a constant harmonic circular load and an alternating harmonic circular load are derived. Two different approaches are used to define the closed form solutions. The first approach uses the integration of the harmonic point force and the addition theorem for Bessel functions, while the second approach applies the Hankel transform to solve the inhomogeneous partial differential equation of the Kirchhoff plate theory. The new closed form particular solutions can especially be used in Trefftz like methods and extend their field of application.

We consider a semi-infinite optimization problem in Banach spaces, where both the objective functional and the constraint operator are compositions of convex nonsmooth mappings and differentiable mappings. We derive necessary optimality conditions for these problems. Finally, we apply these results to non-convex stochastic optimization problems with stochastic dominance constraints, generalizing earlier results.

Opis:
The necessity to develop an optode array in order to probe the fetus oxygenation noninvasively regardless of the fetus position has been highlighted in previous literature. In this paper, a series of optical simulations are carried out to determine the best representation of optode array by using optical properties at systolic and diastolic states. The selection is based on the highest flux values accumulated at respective detectors. To accomplish the objective, a homogenous three-layer semi-infinite tissue model is implemented to represent the pregnant woman model. The geometry of the model as well as Monte Carlo simulation are carried out using commercial software, whereas the optical properties related to systolic and diastolic states are defined for all wavelengths. A statistical noise analysis is also introduced in order to find a sufficient number of rays to be launched into the optical tissue system.

Zinc oxide is a good material for application in nanoand optoelectronics due to its notable features, for example, large band gap. In this work ZnO films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering at various pressure of residual gases and different temperatures of the substrate are investigated. The spectral dependences of ellipsometric parameters and of the films are determined by ellipsometry. The effective values of optical constants and are calculated. The roughness and the texture of the surfaces are obtained by Atomic-Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). One indicates that the refractive index decreases when reducing the pressure of residual gases, and the roughness decreases when elevating the temperature of the substrate. Thus, the behavior of some properties of the films at various conditions of deposition is determined.

A circle criterion is obtained for a SISO Lur'e feedback control system consisting of a nonlinear static sector-type controller and a linear boundary control system in factor form on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert state space H previously introduced by the authors (Grabowski and Callier, 1999). It is assumed for the latter that (a) the observation functional is infinite-time admissible, (b) the factor control vector satisfies a compatibility condition, and (c) the transfer function belongs to Hinfty(Pi+) and satisfies a frequency-domain inequality of the circle criterion type. We also require that the closed-loop system be well-posed, i.e. for any initial state x0in H the truncated input and output signals uT, yT belong to L2(0,T) for any T>0. The technique of the proof adapts Desoer-Vidyasagar's circle criterion method (Desoer and Vidyasagar, 1975, Ch.3, Secs.1 and 2, pp.37-43, Ch.5, Sec.2, pp.139-142 and Ch.6, Secs.3 and 4, pp.172-174]), and uses the input-output map developed by the authors (Grabowski and Callier, 2001). The results are illustrated by two transmission line examples: (a) that of the loaded distortionless RLCG type, and (b) that of the unloaded RC type. The conclusion contains a discussion on improving the results by the loop-transformation technique.

In the paper a new, state space, non integer order model for one dimensional heat transfer process is presented. The model is based on known semigroup model. The derivative with respect to time is described by the non integer order Caputo operator, the spatial derivative is described by integer order operator. The elementary properties of the state operator are proven. The solution of state equation is calculated with the use of Laplace transform. Results of experiments show, that the proposed model is more accurate than analogical integer order model in the sense of square cost function.

Opis:
Two approaches to modeling microsatellite DNA repeats are considered. The former is an infinite dimensional system based on the theory of branching random walks which dynamic properties are characterized using Laplace transforms and Laplace asymptotic techniques. The latter is an n-dimensional approximation where microsatellite DNA repeats model is the example of a chain system. Both models were the subject of many numerical calculations using the MATLAB software. The results allow us to evaluate the asymptotic behavior and determine the effect of the system parameters on the run of the solution and the state variables.

This paper is concerned with the existence and approximate controllability for impulsive fractional-order stochastic infinite delay integro-differential equations in Hilbert space. By using Krasnoselskii's fixed point theorem with stochastic analysis theory, we derive a new set of sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of impulsive fractional stochastic system under the assumption that the corresponding linear system is approximately controllable. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the obtained theory.

The Cauchy integral method has been applied to derive exact and closed expressions for Goursat's functions for the first and second fundamental problems for an infinite thermoelastic plate weakened by a hole having arbitrary shape. The plate considered is conformally mapped to the area of the right half-plane. Many previous discussions of various authors can be considered as special cases of this work. The shape of the hole being an ellipse, a crescent, a triangle, or a cut having the shape of a circular arc are included as special cases.

This paper discusses the theoretical relationship between the views of Damascius and those of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. While Damascius’ De principiis is a bold treatise devoted to investigating the hypermetaphysics of apophatism, it anticipates various theoretical positions put forward by Dionysius the Areopagite. The present paper focuses on the following. First, Damascius is the only ancient philosopher who systematically demonstrates the first principle to be infinite (traditional Greek thought tended to regard the arkhē as finite). Second, Damascius modifies the concept and in several important passages shows the infinite to be superior and prior to the finite (previously this assumption was held only by Melissus and, sporadically, by Gregory of Nyssa and Plotinus). Third, Damascius’ theory of being (infinite, endless and ultrarational) is the strongest ancient articulation of the nature of the One which is a clear prefiguration of the negative theology developed by Dionysius the Areopagite.

The dynamic response of a double-beam resting on a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation and subjected to a finite series of moving loads is analysed. The beams are connected by a viscoelastic layer and the load moving along the upper beam represents motion of a train on the rail track. The mathematical model is described by a coupled system of fourth order partial differential equations with homogeneous boundary conditions. The nonlinearity is included in the foundation stiffness of medium supporting a lower beam. The coiflet based approximation combined with Adomian’s decomposition is adopted for the displacements derivation. The developed approach allows one to overcome difficulties related to direct calculation of Fourier integrals as well as the small parameter method. The conditions for correctness of the approximate solution are defined. The influence of some factors on the system sensitivity is discussed, with special focus on the distance between the separated loads. Numerical examples are presented for a certain system of physical parameters.

In this paper, a multirate loss model for the calculation of time and call congestion probabilities in a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) cell is considered. It utilizes the Bandwidth Reservation (BR) policy and supports calls generated by an infinite or finite number of users. The BR policy achieves QoS equalization by equalizing congestion probabilities among calls of dierent service-classes. In the proposed models a multiple access interference is considered, and the notion of local blocking, user's activity and interference cancelation. Although the analysis of the proposed models reveals that the steady state probabilities do not have a product form solution, the authors show that the calculation of time and call congestion probabilities can be based on approximate but recursive formulas, whose accuracy is verified through simulation and found to be quite satisfactory.

Given a linear dynamical system, we investigate the linear infinite dimensional system obtained by grafting an age structure. Such systems appear essentially in population dynamics with age structure when phenomena like spatial diffusion or transport are also taken into consideration. We first show that the new system preserves some of the wellposedness properties of the initial one. Our main result asserts that if the initial system is null controllable in a time small enough then the structured system is also null controllable in a time depending on the various involved parameters.

This paper introduces the concept of semi-infinite phononic crystal (PC) on account of the Infinite periodicity in x-y plane and finiteness in z-direction. The plane wave expansion and finite element methods are coupled and formulized to calculate the band structures of the proposed periodic elastic composite structures based on the typical geometric properties. First, the coupled plane wave expansion and finite element (PWE/FE) method is applied to calculate the band structures of the Pb/rubber, steel/epoxy and steel/aluminum semi-infinite PCs with cylindrical scatters. Then, it is used to calculate the band structure of the Pb/rubber semi-infinite PC with cubic scatter. Last, the band structure of the rubbercoated Pb/epoxy three-component semi-infinite PC is calculated by the proposed method. Besides, all the results are compared with those calculated by the finite element (FE) method implemented by adopting COMSOL Multiphysics. Numerical results and further analysis demonstrate that the proposed PWE/FE method has strong applicability and high accuracy.

This paper presents simulation and laboratory test results of an implementation of an infinite control set model predictive control into a three-phase AC/DC converter. The connection between the converter and electric grid is made through an LCL filter, which is characterized by a better reduction of grid current distortions and smaller (cheaper) components in comparison to an L-type filter. On the other hand, this type of filter can cause strong resonance at specific current harmonics, which is efficiently suppressed by the control strategy focusing on the strict control input filter capacitors voltage vector. The presented method links the benefits of using linear control methods based on a space vector modulator and the nonlinear ones, which result in excellent control performance in a steady state as well as in a transient state.

In the paper approximate controllability of second order infinite dimensional system with damping is considered. Applying linear operators in Hilbert spaces general mathematical model of second order dynamical systems with damping is presented. Next, using functional analysis methods and concepts, specially spectral methods and theory of unbounded linear operators, necessary and sufficient conditions for approximate controllability are formulated and proved. General result may be used in approximate controllability verification of second order dynamical system using known conditions for approximate controllability of first order system. As illustrative example using Green function approach approximate controllability of distributed dynamical system is also discussed.

In the paper, the generation of narrow-band random waves in a semi-infinite layer of fluid is considered. The problem is formulated in a discrete space of chosen points by means of the finite difference method. The main goal of the investigations is to construct radiation boundary conditions which enable us to replace the infinite fluid area with a finite domain. The investigations are illustrated with experimental results and numerical examples confirming efficiency of the discrete model developed in the paper.

The article examines the paradoxicality of the notion of freedom in the theodramatic approach of Hans Urs von Balthasar. The main subject concerns the paradox of finite and infinite freedom and their relationship described in the second volume of Theo-Drama. The thought of the Swiss theologian is compared with the reflections of Henri de Lubac and Józef Tischner. The confrontation of their approaches in the context of the chosen topic made it possible to apply a new research method. Instead of the dialectical method, typically used in this context, a method concentrated on identifying the paradox and exploring the mystery behind it has been applied. This approach has led to a deeper understanding of the key role of the dynamical nature of finite freedom and has indicated the importance of proper identification of its source. It has allowed also displaying the inalienable nature of the Christological dimension to understand correctly the concept of infinite freedom and the most important feature of its essence. Finally, it has also helped to gain an in-depth insight into the conditions regarding the possibility of a genuine, though not symmetrical, relationship between the two freedoms.

This paper proposes an interpretation of Books V and VI of Aristotle’s Physics as being (at least partly) a reaction to Zeno’s four “arguments against motion” that Aristotle expounds and discusses in Phys. VI 9. On the basis of a detailed textual analysis of that chapter, I show that Zeno’s arguments rest on a frame of a priori notions such as part and whole, in contact, between, limit, etc., which Aristotle takes over in order to account for the inner structure (here called “the In-Between”) common to all facts of motion and change. That frame allows him to develop a specific ontology for that inner structure – although it exists only potentially according to the Aristotelian orthodoxy – because he needs such an ontology in order to vindicate the reality of motion and change.

This paper deals with infinite horizon optimal control problems, which are formulated in weighted Sobolev spaces ... [wzór] and weighted Lp-spaces ... [wzór]. We ask for the consequences of the interpretation of the integral within the objective as a Lebesgue or an improper Riemann integral. In order to justify the use of both types of integrals, various applications of infinite horizon problems are presented. We provide examples showing that lower semicontinuity may fail for objectives involving Lebesgue as well as improper Riemann integrals. Further we prove a lower semicontinuity theorem for an objective with Lebesgue integral under more restrictive growth conditions on the integrand.

The problem of a semi-infinite moving mode-III crack inside a semi-infinite isotropic half- -space is considered. The crack is located between a semi-infinite elastic medium and a layer whose distance from the surface to crack depth is h. Initially, Fourier transformation and inverse Fourier transformation are applied to transfer the governing boundary value problem to the well-known Wiener-Hopf equation. The purpose of this problem is to obtain the analytical solution of Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and Crack Opening Displacement (COD) at the neighbourhood of the crack tip. In numerical Section, I have discussed the variation of parameters (crack velocity, layer distance h from the surface to crack depth) to show the effect of these parametric values on the graphs of SIF and COD where the material properties (density, shear modulus) were fixed.

To cite a few names; Lao-tzu, Chaung-tzu, Solomon, Buddha, Pascal, Nietzsche, Bergson and Heidegger. European philosophy began with Plato who created the idea of being. But being and matter occupy only a negligible position in the universe. Compared to this universe, being and matter are like three tiny ants in relation to the earth. European philosophy has been questioning circled over three small ants. However, we think hard about anything including three ants and a gap the size of the earth. Nothingness is not the non-existence of all things. Nowhere it includes and transcends relative nothingness and being. We call it Transcendental Nothing or absolutely nothing. Nothingness is the highest knowledge in which the transcendent is revealed to humanity; infinite knowledge eternity is projected transcendent God love. I call the principle of nowhere and love. The following is proved.

Early detection or screening examination of Brest cancer can be done using Optical Tomography and Boundary Element Method. We can not make measurements or precisely Defie boundary conditions on the surface between breast and chest. A few models which uses an extension of the definition area to other tissues surrounding the breast are discussed. Among them model containing infinite boundary elements which allows us to reduce the mesh and to avoid the problem of setting incorrect boundary conditions on unavailable surface between breast and chest.
Wczesne przesiewowe wykrywanie nowotworów piersi może być wykonywane z zastosowaniem Metody Elementów Brzegowych i mammografii optycznej. Wymaga to określenia warunków brzegowych. Niestety, nie ma możliwości umieszczenia detektorów i źródeł światła na powierzchni między piersią a klatką piersiową. Typowym rozwiązaniem jest rozszerzenie obszaru poszukiwania rozwiązania o fragment klatki piersiowej i utworzenie sztucznej granicy zaniku zjawiska. Zbytnie powiększenie siatki skutkuje wzrostem kosztów obliczeniowych, natomiast przyjęcie sztucznej granicy zbyt blisko obszaru zainteresowań - powstaniem potencjalnych błędów. Rozwa?ania przeprowadzono na bazie kilku prostych modeli piersi. Ostatni model zawiera elementy brzegowe nieskończone pozwalające na zredukowanie rozmiarów siatki i uniknięcie problemu błędnych warunków brzegowych przez utworzenie modelu o tzw. otwartym brzegu.

Opis:
The axisymmetric problem of acoustic impedance of a vibrating annular piston embedded into a flat rigid baffle concentrically around a semi-infinite rigid cylindrical circular baffle has been undertaken in this study. The Helmholtz equation has been solved. The Green’s function valid for the zone considered has been used for this purpose. The influence of the semi-infinite cylindrical baffle on the piston’s acoustic impedance has been investigated. The acoustic impedance has been presented in both forms: integral and asymptotic, both valid for the steady harmonic vibrations. Additionally, the acoustic impedances of the piston with and without the cylindrical baffle have been compared to one another. In the case without the cylindrical baffle some earlier results have been used.

The paper is concerned with development of optimal treatment protocols that take into account both action of several drugs and the evolution of drug resistance. It is a result of analysis of evolution of drug resistance in cancer population but presented methodology can be applied in any case involving drug resistance stemming from gene amplification. First, a biological background is given. In subsequent sections of the paper, the developed technique is presented and some early analytical results, which form a basis for more precise modeling, are shown. Afterwards, the model description is transformed into a vector integro-differential equation, which makes it possible to define necessary conditions of optimal solution to the minimization problem arising from the search for the optimal treatment. Finally, some remarks on the model applicability are presented.

W pracy rozważany jest mieszany sposób symulowania czasu powrotu do stanu początkowego określonego krytycznego procesu narodzin i śmierci. Ten czas powrotu ma nieskończoną wartość oczekiwaną przy czym jego asymptotyczny rozkład jest potęgowy. Zatem dopóki symulowany czas nie przekroczy pewnej granicznej wartości proces jest symulowany bezpośrednio. W chwili przekroczenia tej wartości granicznej czas powrotu jest losowany z ogona tego rozkładu potęgowego.
We consider a hybrid method to simulate the return time to the initial state in a critical-case birth-death process. The expected value of this return time is infinite, but its distribution asymptotically follows a power-law. Hence, the simulation approach is to directly simulate the process, unless the simulated time exceeds some threshold and if it does, draw the return time from the tail of the power law.

In the present paper approximate constrained controllability of linear abstract second-order infinite-dimensional dynamical control systems is considered. First, fundamental definitions and notions are recalled. Next it is proved, using the so-called frequency-domain method, that approximate constrained controllability of second-order dynamical control system can be verified by the approximate constrained controllability conditions for the simplified, suitably defined first-order linear dynamical control system. General results are then applied for approximate constrained controllability investigation of mechanical flexible structure vibratory dynamical system. Some special cases are also considered. Moreover, many remarks, comments and corollaries on the relationships between different concepts of approximate controllability are given. Finally, the obtained results are applied for investigation of approximate constrained controllability for flexible mechanical structure. In this case linear second-order partial differential state equation describes the transverse motion of an elastic beam which occupies the given finite interval.
Praca przedstawia metodę optymalizacji minimalno-czasowej ruchów manipulatorów hydraulicznych, po zadanej ścieżce członu roboczego. Zakładane jest, że ścieżka członu roboczego jednoznacznie określa odpowiadającą jej ścieżkę manipulatora w zmiennych uogólnionych. Optymalizacja sprowadza się wówczas do znalezienia optymalnego rozkładu parametru ścieżki w czasie. Proponowana metoda optymalizacji polega na przybliżeniu ciągłego rozkładu parametru zbiorem punktów, a następnie znalezieniu ich optymalnych położeń metodami programowania nieliniowego z ograniczeniami. Zakładana jest przy tym nieściśliwość cieczy hydraulicznej, w celu przyspieszenia obliczeń. Załączone są wyniki przykładowych optymalizacji, wykonanych na modelu trójczłonowej koparki hydraulicznej.

In this paper, the time-optimal control problem for infinite order hyperbolic systems in which time delays appear in the integral form both in state equations and in boundary conditions is considered. Optimal controls are characterized in terms of an adjoint system and shown to be unique and bang-bang. These results extend to certain cases of nonlinear control problems. The particular properties of optimal control are discussed.

This paper focuses on the connection between sliding motions and low frequency modes of high-gain feedback systems in an infinite dimensional framework. We study a particular class of abstract control systems in a Hilbert space setting and analyse their high-gain behaviour through singular perturbations. We show that the "slow" motion derived from the reduced model approximates the evolution of the closed loop after a fast transient. Moreover we prove a relation between this slow component of the high-gain feedback system and sliding motions, in the spirit, of the analogous result in the finite dimensional setting by Young, Kokotovic and Utkin (Young et al., 1977).

Article discusses the hypertext novel Infinite Dead End as one of the pioneering examples of such forms in Russian literature. The solution used by Dmitri Gakovsky, the author refers to the hypertext poetics, which allows her to conclude that the analyzed work belongs to outstanding examples of world-wide hypertext. In particular, the author’s creation of a neverending network of comments led to the creation of an endless blind alley by the author of the multilayered work.
W artykule omówiono powieść hipertekstową Nieskończony ślepy zaułek jako jeden z pionierskich przykładów tego typu form w literaturze rosyjskiej. Rozwiązania zastosowane przez Dymitra Galkovskiego autorka odnosi do poetyki hipertekstu, co pozwala jej stwierdzić, że analizowany utwór należy do wybitnych przykładów światowej literatury hipertekstowej. W sposób szczególny wyeksponowany został zabieg stworzenia przez autora niekończącej się sieci komentarzy, dzięki któremu autor Nieskończonego ślepego zaułka uzyskał efekt wielowarstwowości utworu.

Infinite-horizon problems of kinds that arise in macroeconomic applications present a challenge in optimal control which has only partially been met. Results from the theory of convex problems of Lagrange can be utilized, to some extent, the most interesting feature being that in these problems the analysis revolves about a rest point of the Hamiltonian, which is at the same time a saddle point of the Hamiltonian in the minimax sense. The prospect is that in this situation the Hamiltonian dynamical system exhibits saddle point behavior in the differential equation sense as well. Some results are provided in this direction and coordinated with notions of asymptotic optimization, which mathematical economists have worked with.

We consider the Cauchy problem for infinite system of differential functional equations $\partial_{t}z_{k}(t, x) = f_{k}(t, x, z, \partial_{x}z_{k}(t, x)), k \in \mathbf{N}$. In the paper we consider a general class of difference methods for this problem. We prove the convergence of methods under the assumptions that given functions satisfy the nonlinear estimates of the Perron type with respect to functional variables. The proof is based on functional difference inequalities. We constructed the Euler method as an example of difference method.

A parabolic initial boundary value problem and an associated elliptic Dirichlet problem for an infinite weakly coupled system of semilinear differential-functional equations are considered. It is shown that the solutions of the parabolic problem is asymptotically stable and the limit of the solution of the parabolic problem as t → ∞ is the solution of the associated elliptic problem. The result is based on the monotone methods.

This paper presents an (infinite-dimensional) geometric framework for control systems, based on infinite jet bundles, where a system is represented by a single vector field and dynamic equivalence (to be precise: equivalence by endogenous dynamic feedback) is conjugation by diffeomorphisms. These diffeomorphisms are very much related to Lie-Bäcklund transformations. It is proved in this framework that dynamic equivalence of single-input systems is the same as static equivalence.

The main aim of this article is to review the existing state of art concerning the complete controllability of semilinear dynamical systems. The study focus on obtaining the sufficient conditions for the complete controllability for various systems using the Banach fixedpoint theorem. We describe the results for stochastic semilinear functional integro-differential system, stochastic partial differential equations with finite delays, semilinear functional equations, a stochastic semilinear system, a impulsive stochastic integro-differential system, semilinear stochastic impulsive systems, an impulsive neutral functional evolution integro-differential system and a nonlinear stochastic neutral impulsive system. Finally, two examples are presented.

In this paper we study some properties of infinite models of the controlled evolution of drug resistance. We combine asymptotic techniques used in previous studies of similar models with methods of control theory and of semigroup theory. It enables us to find conditions for stability of the model both when the sensitive population is annihilated and when there exists a permanent influx from the sensivite compartment into drug resistant one. The conditions are expressed in terms of relationships between amplification and deamplification ratios as well as average life times of cells and intensity of anticancer drug action.

The main objective of the paper is to show that the concept of the implemented semigroup provides a natural mathematical framework for analysis of the infinite-dimensional Lyapunov equation (DLE). Such a Lyapunov equation arises quite naturally in various system-theoretic and control problems in which the time horizon is finite, the state space is infinite-dimensional and the operators involved in the mathematical model of the system are unbounded. As an application we show how this approach can be used to solve a simple decoupling problem arising in optimal control.
Głównym celem pracy jest pokazanie, że koncepcja półgrupy złożonej jest naturalnym narzędziem matematycznym do analizy nieskończenie wymiarowego różniczkowego równania Lapunowa. Tego typu równania występują w problemach sterowania ze skończonym horyzontem czasowym i modelem matematycznym zawierającym operatory nieograniczone. Podejście oparte na półgrupie złożonej pozwala wyprowadzić warunki konieczne i wystarczające ograniczoności rozwiąznia rózniczkowego równania Lapunowa w odpowiedniej przestrzeni. Jesteśmy przekonani, że półgrupa złożona może być użytecznym narzędziem matematycznym w nieskończenie wymiarowej teorii sterowania i systemów. Jako przykład zastosowania przedstawionej teorii w pracy pokazano rozwiązanie pewnego problemu rozprzęgania występujacego w zadaniach sterowania optymalnego.

This paper develops a mathematical framework for the infinite-dimensional Sylvester equation both in the differential and the algebraic form. It uses the implemented semigroup concept as the main mathematical tool. This concept may be found in the literature on evolution equations occurring in mathematics and physics and is rather unknown in systems and control theories. But it is just systems and control theory where Sylvester equations widely appear, and for this reason we intend to give a mathematically rigorous introduction to the subject which is tailored to researchers and postgraduate students working on systems and control. This goal motivates the assumptions under which the results are developed. As an important example of applications we study the problem of designing an asymptotic state observer for a linear infinite dimensional control system with a bounded input operator and an unbounded output operator.

This is the second part of paper [8], where a model of a heavy chain system with a punctual load (tip mass) in the form of a system of partial differential equations was interpreted as an abstract semigroup system and then analysed on a Hilbert state space. In particular, in [8] we have formulated the problem of exponential stabilizability of a heavy chain in a given position. It was also shown that the exponential stability can be achieved by applying a stabilizer of the colocated-type. The proof used the method of Lyapunov functionals. In the present paper, we give other two proofs of the exponential stability, which provides an additional intrinsic insight into the exponential stabilizability mechanism. The first proof makes use of some spectral properties of the system. In the second proof, we employ some relationships between exponential stability and exact observability.
