The article analyses the structural, pragmatic, cognitive and stylistic aspects of a handbook entitled Introduction to governance, featured in the first Polish popular-scientific journal – “Nowe Wiadomości Ekonomiczne i Uczone” published in Warsaw in 1758–1761 by Wawrzyniec Mitzler de Kolof. It has been demonstrated that the text under analysis, which can be classified as a utility text, shows conspicuous elements of two styles – ordinary (unsophisticated vocabulary; simple syntactic structures; proverbs) and scholarly (pronounced text segmentation, perspective of the author setting himself aside from the recipient; economic terminology; defining new or more difficult concepts; references to foreign (Latin and/or German) counterparts of Polish names of plants).

W artykule przedstawiono kilka zagadnień związanych z redagowaniem map w podręcznikach akademickich na przykładzie sześciu wybranych publikacji Wydawnictwa Naukowego PWN.
The article critically discusses cartographic contents of six geography handbooks published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN (Polish Scientific Publishers). The publishing house, founded in 1951 specializes in academic handbooks of various disciplines. In the last few years a change of printing technology and map preparation for reproduction becomes evident. The text presents the description of some maps: its scale, projection - the cartographic graticule. It turns out that on handbook maps the scale is often omitted - linear scale is more common. Occasionally the projection chosen is a wrong one, e.g. Mercator's projection for presentation of meteorological stations in the world (fig. 3). Text explanations are often separated from the legend symbols, the relation "figure-ground" is omitted (land - water in many maps) (fig. 1) and graphic variables misapplied. The aim of the article is to present most common errors and failings, which can be easily avoided with the contemporary technology of cartographic illustration design.

The paper presents the inspirations and justifications to publish the “Visual Primer” – an educational book describing the graphic design. The book text and layout began as a subject of M.Sc. thesis defended in the Faculty of Graphic Design in the Academy of Arts in Katowice. Designing this book is tied to the need to arrange and to mold the environment, thus dealing with the problem of enormous visual chaos in public spaces. It is a successful attempt of combining the quality factors (including aesthetic ones) and usability. The content and design of this book shall still be improved, however with some effort the “Visual Primer” will have a chance to be seen in the publishing market.
W artykule opisano motywacje i inspiracje powstania Elementarza wizualnego – książki o charakterze edukacyjnym poruszającej tematykę związaną z grafiką użytkową. Tekst i projekt podręcznika powstały w ramach pracy magisterskiej obronionej w 2011 r. na Wydziale Projektowym Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach. Promotorem pracy jest dr Jacek Mrowczyk. Zarówno zawartość, jak i projekt książki wymagają wciąż wiele pracy, ale po odpowiednim dopracowaniu ma ona szansę zaistnieć na rynku wydawniczym.

The paper analyses the functionality and appropriateness of topics presented in the Parčić manuscript because it is obvious that the author was keen to help his Croatian-speaking students in the acquisition of Italian.

The aim of the present article was to conduct a primary analysis of a style/styles of a modern self-help manual (particularly in the form of a book), which analysis would take into consideration the following detailed problems: a handbook versus typical styles, the stylistic component of the handbook model, the style of a handbook and/versus the “handbook-like” style, the style of handbook texts. The observations presented here should be perceived as a fragment of a broader project which focused on recreating a model (a pattern) of the genre and its textual realisations. The analyses were conducted in line with the paradigms of linguistic genology and stylistics. The subject was selected on the basis of an assumption pertaining to the uncertain discursive status of handbooks – being now an expansive, polymorphic and transgressive form of discourse, which spreads its features to other genre forms. Uncertain remains the stylistic affiliation of this form of utterance, recognised by receivers/readers. Within the handbook sphere (no matter what genre it represents), one may introduce indicators of numerous styles and language variants. Specialist fields of science (law, Information Technology, medicine, etc.) impose their own, more or less hermetic ‘language’ on genre actualisations. Language styles are represented not only by verbal codes. In the case of handbooks, equally important is the image code – a picture, chart, or in a broader sense: a graphic shape of the text (a book). The review of textual empiricism should also be extended by stylistic distinctiveness which arises from individual preferences and traits of the author of discourse.

Artykuł odnosi się do zbioru podręczników i poradników twórczego pisania – zarówno napisanych przez polskich autorów, jak i dostępnych w przekładach z języka angielskiego. Autor zastanawia się nad uwarunkowaniami wydawniczymi oraz praktykami wydawców. W zasadniczej części artykułu próbuje zrekonstruować sylwetkę doradcy (instruktora) w sprawach kreatywnego pisania. Przedstawia najczęściej pojawiające się strategie autorskie, a także zdaje sprawę z okoliczności, w jakich publikacje poradnikowe powstały.
The article refers to a collection of handbooks and guides for creative writing – both written by Polish authors and available in translations from English. The author reflects on the publishing conditions and the practices of publishers. In the main part of the article, he tries to reconstruct the figure of an advisor (instructor) in matters of creative writing. It presents the most common author’s strategies, and also reports on the circumstances in which the guidebooks were created.

The following factors have contributed to arising new target groups in teaching foreign languages: the European Union’s claim concerning the multilingualism of its members, migrations, common mobility. As a consequence of this situation new handbooks for teaching and learning foreign languages have appeared on the market. Thus, the teacher is often confronted with the necessity of choosing the handbook, which is most adequate for the needs of a particular group of learners. The present article aims at defining the criteria of handbook selection in the light of the latest trends in foreign language teaching methodology.

Artykuł opisuje priorytety rozwoju organizacji i narzędzi dydaktyki w obszarze nauk o bezpieczeństwie (security studies). Nauki o bezpieczeństwie są dyscypliną względnie nową, bazującą na integracji tradycji naukowych wiedzy wojskowej, nauk politycznych, pedagogiki i innych. Dopiero od niedawna na lokalnym rynku pojawiły się kompleksowe podręczniki dla studentów i wykładowców tej dziedziny wiedzy. Autor przygląda się lokalnym oraz wiodącym światowym publikacjom dydaktycznym w security studies i poszukuje dobrych praktyk w obszarze sposobów kształcenia na gruncie specyficznych doświadczeń Europy Wschodniej. Analiza została dokonana na gruncie teorii organizacji uczącej się.
The article describes the priorities in the development of a scientific organization and teaching toolbox in the field of security studies. Security studies remain a quite new discipline in social sciences and are based on traditions of military science, political science, pedagogy, and other sciences. The newest complex handbooks dedicated to security studies scholars on the local market have been published for the last few years. In this essay, the author examines local and global practices in the creation of professional handbooks for security studies in order to find good practices in teaching students in the Eastern European environment. Theoretical analysis was conducted on the basis of learning organization theory.

Autorka artykułu wychodzi z założenia, że podręcznik odgrywa kluczową rolę w procesie nauczania i uczenia się języka obcego. Podjęła zatem próbę omówienia podręcznika multimedialnego zyskującego popularność na lekcjach języków obcych. W pierwszej części artykułu przytoczono słownikowe definicje pojęcia podręcznika i przedstawiono jego cechy. W pozostałej części artykułu wiodącą rolę odgrywa analiza e-podręcznika zarówno pod względem treści, jak i konstrukcji. Autorka doszła do wniosku, że podręcznik klasyczny i podręcznik cyfrowy niewiele się od siebie różnią, jeśli weźmiemy pod uwagę globalny skład i zawarte w nim treści. Podkreśla jednak, że uczeń korzystający z drukowanego podręcznika ma ustaloną ścieżkę edukacyjną, którą musi podążać, aby osiągnąć określony poziom wiedzy. Z drugiej strony student może łatwo zagubić się w e-podręczniku, w jego strukturze może też przekroczyć obowiązkowe segmenty poprzez wykorzystanie różnorodnych plików multimedialnych osadzonych w jego strukturze. 
The author of this article assumes that a textbook is central to the process of teaching and learning a foreign language. Thus, it she attempted to discuss a multimedia textbook gaining popularity during foreign language classes. In the first part of the article dictionary definitions of the concept of a textbook are quoted and its features are presents. In the rest of the artikle, the analysis of e-textbook in terms of both content and construction plays the leading role. The author came to the conclusion that a classic textbook and digital textbook do not differ much from each other, if we consider the global composition and content contained. She stresses, however, that a student using a printed textbook has a fixed educational path, which must be followed in order to achieve a given level of knowledge. On the other hand, a student can easily get lost in a e-textbook, in the structure of it, a student may also exceed the mandatory segments through the use of a variety of multimedia files embedded in its structure.

Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie zapomnianego dzieła Joachima Löisentina pt. Christliche Haußzucht…, które po 31 latach zostało opublikowane w 1655 r. przez Davida Friedricha Rhetego w Gdańsku. Zbiór ten, stanowiący połączenie modlitewnika, kancjonału oraz podręcznika wiary, przedstawiono jako komplementarny poradnik służący systematycznej i metodycznej katechizacji w duchu luterańskim w zaciszu domowym.
The aim of the article is to present the forgotten work by Joachim Löisentin, titled Christliche Haußzucht..., published in Gdańsk in 1655, that is 31 years after its inception, by David Friedrich Rhete. This collection, a combination of a prayer book, a hymnal, and a religious handbook, was presented as a complementary guide for systematic and methodical catechisation, in the Lutheran spirit, in the comfort of one’s own home.

Mniej lub bardziej zaawansowane algorytmy cyfrowego przetwarzania i analizy sygnałów stanowią nieodłączną część modułów programowych każdego wirtualnego przyrządu pomiarowego. W związku z tym więk-szość narzędziowych programów przeznaczonych do projektowania wirtualnych przyrządów pomiarowych, wyposażona jest w biblioteki zawierające funkcje cyfrowego przetwarzania sygnałów. Odpowiadające im panele funkcyjne lub moduły graficzne mają formę przyjazną dla użytkownika i są łatwe w implementacji. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że metrolodzy, jako użytkownicy tego oprogramowania, powinni wcześniej poznać teorię cyfrowego przetwarzania sygnałów. Propozycja autorów polega po pierwsze na przedstawieniu metodycznego podejścia do nauczania metod cyfrowego przetwarzania i analizy sygnałów i po drugie na wykorzystaniu do tego celu zasobów programowych środowisk programistycznych takich jak LabVIEW czy LabWindows/CVI. Stąd prosta droga do opracowania multimedialnego podręcznika do cyfrowego przetwarzania sygnałów.
Digital signal processing algorithms are attached to software modules of many virtual instruments. So that, all available software tools, which help to design virtual instruments, are equipped with libraries implementing digital signal processing functions. Function panels or graphical modules related to them have a user friendly form and are easy to use. Certainly, the scientists, engineers and students as the tool software users should learn digital signal processing theory before. The idea of DSP teaching, presented by the authors, leads to creation of the multimedia DSP handbook.

Lucjan Rydel authored a dramatic trilogy about King Sigismund II Augustus. He described the 16th century with great erudition as regards the material and political history of the period. He had studied numerous historical records as well as scholarly works. He also wrote an academic essay on Charles de Nassau. The main areas of his interest in history were texts of didactic and popular character. He wrote a monograph entitled Queen Hedwig, where he collected the themes of female rule in literature and art. He published brochures on buildings of historical interest in Krakow, Warsaw and Vilnius. He brought out A Short History of Poland and History of Poland for Everybody, both of which were written during the Great War. His ambition was to write accessible textbooks on the history of the Polish nation and Polish state with a view to boosting the patriotism of Poles. In matters of ideology, his works were leaning towards conservative views.
