Opis:
After decades of research into disadvantages for girls in the educational system, “male underachievement” has recently become a frequently discussed topic in the social sciences. A glance at explanations for the development of gender differences in academic achievement reveals that the disadvantages for males and females are explained differently to some extent, but that gender stereotypes seem to play an important part in most popular theoretical approaches. This article gives an overview of actual gender differences in academic achievement in Europe. Following a short description of the nature and functioning of stereotypes in general, and of gender stereotypes in particular, the article discusses the current state of empirical research on the most important theoretical explanations for gender differences in academic achievement and the role gender stereotypes play in these theories. Finally, open questions – and thus fields for further research – are outlined.

Opis:
Nowadays, we observe an increase in divorce rates in all Western countries, including Poland. Research shows significant gender differences in reactions towards divorce. Therefore, the main aim of the presented study was to compare the psychological situation of wives and husbands being in the process of divorce. One hundred and twenty couples were examined in the Family Diagnostic Centre. Women more often than men filed for divorce. Women, younger spouses and those in shorter relationships declared lower satisfaction with marriage. Both spouses blamed the other partner for the breakup (with men more frequently blamed by both parties). The results indicate significant gender differences in emotional and cognitive functioning with certain psychological problems displayed by both spouses.

Opis:
The article discusses similarities and differences in the personality development of men and women in their life-span. The analyses of the developmental psychology research show that boys and girls develop their own personality from the early years of their life, thus adapting themselves to the gender stereotypes. The article also contains a survey of meta-analyses concerning the personality traits of men and women, conducted in different countries from 1958 to 2001 (Maccoby, Jacklin, 1974, Hall, 1984, Feingold, 1994, Costa, Terraciano, McCrae, 2001). The metaanalyses show a coherent image of gender differences in personality traits concerning greater tender-mindedness in women and greater assertiveness in men. At the same time, they indicate temporal changes and trends connected with a tendency for differences to disappear. They also emphasize cultural distinctness.

The aim of the cross-sectional study is to map the development of self-concept in adolescents in terms of the Piers-Harris domain approach as well as to capture gender specifics, if any, in the process of its formation. Research involved 290 adolescents, divided in three age categories. The Piers-Harris Children’s and Adolescents´ Self-Concept Scale (Obereignerů et al., 2015) was used as the research tool. Results do not indicate statistically significant differences between groups of adolescents in their overall self-concept by age, except in certain self-concept dimensions. More specific results are provided by the gender analysis of age differences. Over time, change in physical self-concept (PHY) occurs in boys, and changes in behavioural self and anxiety (BEH, FRE) occur in girls. Results of the study can be taken into consideration by all school professionals in their work.

We investigate gender differences in delay discounting of monetary losses. 203 participants solved a discounting task based on the titration algorithm. The individual rates of delay discounting of losses were calculated with the use of AUC (Area Under the Curve) method. The results show that there is no statistically significant impact of gender on delay discounting of monetary losses. We briefly discuss possible biological and social explanations of the above finding.
Przedmiotem badania są różnice płciowe w czasowym dyskontowaniu strat pieniężnych. Zadanie dyskontowe skonstruowane na podstawie algorytmu miareczkowania rozwiązało 203 uczestników eksperymentu ekonomicznego. Indywidualne stopy dyskontowania w czasie zostały obliczone z użyciem metody AUC. Wyniki badania wskazują na brak istotnego statystycznie efektu płci na dyskontowanie strat pieniężnych w czasie. Autorzy zwięźle dyskutują możliwe biologiczne i społeczne wyjaśnienia uzyskanego wyniku.

Opis:
The present studies explore how activating concepts pertaining to the origins of interindividual differences affect the processing of stereotypical and counterstereotypical information. The concepts, i.e., nature and nurture, are both assumed to evoke similar stereotypical expectations although nurture implies greater flexibility. The studies show that stereotypical information enhances whereas counterstereotypical information diminishes stereotyping when nurture is activated. In contrast, counterstereotypical evidence challenges what activated nature would suggest and perceivers primed with nature evince stronger stereotyping when they encounter counterstereotypical information. The results also show that priming nature leads perceivers to attribute stereotype conformity to internal causes whereas nurture accredits conformity to situational constraints. Stereotype flexibility is associated with the subjective ease with which perceivers can both imagine counterstereotypical and mentally undo stereotypical evidence.

Research from multiple traditions demonstrates the impact of children’s social environments on their academic motivation, learning, and achievement. The present literature review attempts to better understand the family-school relationship, with a particular emphasis on parental influences on the child’s academic achievement and later career development. This paper focuses on the proximal (parent-child interactions) and distal (familial social/cultural context) dimension. Additionally, an attempt is made to understand the gender differences that are seen in children in their academic preferences and later career choices.

The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the relation between gender and prospective memory performance with respect to participants’ age and the specific requirements of pro-spective memory tasks. Prospective memory performance was better for women compared to men in the older adult group. In the entire sample, women performed better than men on prospective memory tasks with an external cue. The possible influence of factors related to the gender role, personality, and perception on prospective memory performance is discussed.

Opis:
The early years are the most important years of a child's life for learning and development. Furthermore, this is also the crucial period when children learn the gendered norms and expectations of their community and society. This research aims to determine how children in Croatian kindergartens experience gender differences and stereotypes. The research was based on the qualitative research paradigm. It conducted a case study of 20 preschool children (5–6 years old) in one Croatian kindergarten. With the help of a semi-structured interview, the children’s views of gender differences were analysed. Participants also confirmed their own opinions through artistic expressions which are non-verbal self-evaluations. Findings suggest that children can express their gender very clearly. It can also be noticed that children will often choose games that are stereotypically characteristic of a certain gender. Children observe their parents and adopt their gender-specific behaviours. Preschool teachers, in partnership with parents, should work to reduce gender differences to maximize children's well-being and build a brighter future for the whole generation.

The purpose of this study was to determine student perceptions of science teacher communication behavior in the classroom environment in Jordan. A total of 1,093 participants in the study completed the Teacher Communication Behavior Questionnaire (TCBQ). Results indicated the overall mean of teacher communication behavior to be 3.9 and showed statistically significant differences in gender perceptions on all five scales of the TCBQ. Results also showed statistically significant differences in student perceptions of teacher behavior in biology, physics and mathematics classes on all five scales of the teacher communication behavior.
