    With the development of disability studies the awareness of “false universalization of disability” increased. It was realized that both theoretical and practical abuse is to treat disability as the main and even the only factor that binds the environment of people with disabilities. The configurations of the aspects of oppression and discriminatory attitudes have been in fact much more complex and elaborate than it was originally thought according to the promotion of the social model of disability. The article addresses the problem of multiplicity and simultaneous oppression, in which disability co-exists among other factors, considering gender, race or age of human as no less important factors of marginalization, violation of law and social exclusion.

    The article concerns Jadwiga Stańczakowa, a blind journalist and writer, and friend of Miron Białoszewski. The author analyses Stańczakowa’s writing as an independent literary phenomenon deserving its own interpretation. Drawing on autobiographical and autoethnographic work by Maria Reimann, who is also an author with a disability, the author observes the emancipatory meaning of blindness. The text present three identities of Jadwiga Stańczakowa. First, the author shows her as a woman and asks if her blindness affected her femininity and sexuality. Secondly, the author interprets fragments of texts written by Stańczakowa during depression. Finally, she describes the writer’s identity, the most autonomous, although they all depend on Białoszewski.

    In the text, the author demonstrated that regardless of the prevailing regime, the State, by relying on separate laws for people with disabilities (or any other minority group), has created and continues to create colonies of sorts. In the first part of the article, the author presented the difference between postcolonialism and neo-colonialism in relation to people with disabilities and in Disability Studies. Afterward, he highlighted the illusory nature of research and, above all, educational activities in favor of people with disabilities. He argues that in the case of this group of people, we are dealing with neo-colonial pedagogy rather than a postcolonial one.

    The article presents the genesis of women’s disability studies as an academic and  social activity of women with disabilities who pointed out that their experiences  were ignored both in general disability studies and in the feminist discourse. The  contemporary aspects of women’s disability studies are presented on the example of  discourses on the body, violence against women with disabilities and their economic situation. The aim of the article is to present women’s disability studies in a context that goes beyond the analyses focused on Europe or the United States of America and broadens the area of interest to include the experiences of women with  disabilities in the countries of the Global South.

    Interdisciplinary studies on disability are conducted in the world by scholars from different disciplines and sub-disciplines, including special education. This article deals with an analysis of the evolution of the concept of disability studies and its’ implementation in anthropology that was narrowed to cultural anthropology, primarily of American roots with references to British social anthropology. The basic question, which I answer from the perspective of the cultural anthropologists, is formulated as follows: why cultural anthropology is important in the disability studies? I give answers in the context of: ontological, epistemological, rhetorical and political issues. Anthropological analyzes are preceded by definitions of disability studies after Stteven aylor, Bonnie Shoultz, Pamela Walker; Colin Barnes; Dan Goodley; Sharon L. Snyder; David T. Mitchell and Ronald J. Berger.

    Artykuł przybliża badania zespołu studentów i pracowników Akademii Pedagogiki Specjalnej im. Marii Grzegorzewskiej w Warszawie. Dokonano analizy dokumentów dotyczących prowadzonego w niej kierunku Interdyscyplinarne Studia nad Niepełnosprawnością, a także przeglądu stron internetowych uczelni w Polsce i na świecie, w poszukiwaniu kierunków studiów Disability Studies i o zbliżonej problematyce. Dokonano również pod tym kątem przeglądu literatury przedmiotu. Analiza literatury przedmiotu dowodzi, że problematyka niepełnosprawności badanej z perspektywy interdyscyplinarnej, a w szczególności jako kierunku studiów, w polskiej literaturze naukowej poruszana była dość rzadko. Analiza wyników badań wykazała, że konieczne jest wprowadzenie zmian w systemie kształcenia przyszłych specjalistów zajmujących się problemem niepełnosprawności. Istotne jest zatem upowszechnienie kierunku Interdyscyplinarne Studia nad Niepełnosprawnością. Kształcenie specjalisty ds. niepełnosprawności jest bowiem jednym z elementów tworzenia warunków inkluzyjnych w systemach wsparcia i polityce społecznej.

    Jadwiga Stańczakowa was a blind writer, who was more known as a friend of Miron Białoszewski than for her own literary work. Meanwhile, she is the author of several books of poetry, autobiographical prose and a diary. Miron Białoszewski was certainly master for her, thanks to him she began to write about his own blindness. Although that all her work was connected with Białoszewski, it is worth to hear her own voice, especially in the context of disability studies. In this article the author is trying to bring out the poetess of the Białoszewski’s shadows. First of all, the author pointed out that blindness was a magical experience treated as a basis of lirycs. But the dysfunction of sight has also been a cause of recurring depressions. The writing during this ‘double disease’ was particularly difficult and made sense of self-therapy.

    Codziennie wyszukiwarka Google jest wykorzystywana miliony razy przez użytkowników Internetu na całym świecie do poszukiwania potrzebnych im informacji. Mniej znana jest darmowa usługa firmy Google pod nazwą Google Trends, która pozwala na zbadanie popularności słów kluczowych (haseł, fraz), a ściślej – pokazuje trendy w określonym czasie oraz na określonym obszarze. W artykule zostały przedstawione różne sposoby wykorzystania Google Trends przez naukowców badających zjawisko niepełnosprawności, m.in. socjologów, psychologów, pedagogów specjalnych czy polityków społecznych. Sposoby te związane są nie tylko z obserwacją trendów, ale też badaniem cykliczności zjawisk, kontekstów, w jakich pojawiają się określone pojęcia oraz zmian w języku, którym opisuje się niepełnosprawność.
    Each day, the Google search engine is used to perform millions of searches by users around the world looking for relevant information. A lesser known service by Google is Google Trends, which allows to examine the popularity of certain keywords, or more precisely - shows trends at a specific time and in a specific area regarding the given word. The article presents various methods in which Google Trends can be incorporated to study the phenomenon of disability by researchers, including sociologists, psychologists, special education workers or welfare politicians. These methods do not only concern observing trends, but also studying the cyclical nature of phenomena, contexts in which specific concepts appear, and changes in the language that describes various disabilities.

    This paper takes Yakuza 0, a retrospective prequel and standalone entry to the Yakuza digital game franchise from Japan, as a case study for disabled feminine bodies vis-à-vis their male counterparts in game narratives. Of note is Makimura Makoto, a downtrodden Chinese-Japanese woman experiencing post-traumatic psychogenic blindness, who serves as the unwitting kingpin of the yakuza’s schemes. This paper posits that a reading of the game’s narrative (as supplemented by its gameplay mechanics) through the critical lens of disability studies offers a more affective and recuperative understanding of the game’s treatment of its marginalised characters. This paper first seeks to intervene in the game’s embodied and gendered power dynamics by attending to the body politics of its fictitious criminal underworld. Correspondingly, this paper troubles the game’s presentation of disability as a gendered performance, wherein feminine bodies disproportionately experience the material consequences and trauma of their disabilities, framed as pivotal narrative movements that spur the game’s male protagonists forward. Ultimately, this paper works towards a more empathetic reading of Yakuza 0 as a roadmap for how the franchise and digital games at large can address disability as a compounding, ever-evolving relational condition in addition to its physical and/or mental dimensions.

    Autorka przedstawia dzieła literackie powstałe dla dzieci w Polsce w latach 1919‒1949, odnoszące się do problematyki niepełnosprawności. Poddaje analizie dzieła Edwarda Słońskiego (Prawdziwa bajka), Kornela Makuszyńskiego (O dwóch takich, co ukradli księżyc), Marii Kędziorzyny (Za rozbitą szybką, Gaptuś z kąta gracianego). Posługując się dwoma perspektywami badawczymi: studiami nad niepełnosprawnością (disability studies) oraz estetyczną koncepcją literatury dla dzieci autorstwa Igora Saksidy. Prezentuje wartości obecne w tych tekstach (tolerancja, samoakceptacja), skupiając się na ich uniwersalnym charakterze. Kolejną propozycją Autorki jest zmiana chronologii w polskiej historii literatury dla dzieci – postulat „trzydziestolecia 1919‒1949”, zamiast powszechnie przyjętego podziału na dwudziestolecie międzywojenne i okres powojenny. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja utworów współcześnie zapomnianych przez nauczycieli, a które mogą stanowić ciekawe i przystępne dla dziecięcego odbiorcy przykłady zetknięcia się z niepełnosprawnością, jak również propozycja przywrócenia części z nich do obiegu kulturowego po okresie PRL-u. Utwory te można podzielić ze względu na obecność dwóch typów bohaterów: „kalekie” przedmioty oraz niepełnosprawnych bohaterów ludzkich. Bardzo ważnym elementem tej prozy jest jednak nie tylko jej wymiar dydaktyczny, ale również walory estetyczne obecne w wybranych tekstach polskich twórców.
    The author presents chosen literary works for children created in Poland between 1919 and 1949. She makes an analysis of works created by Edward Słoński (The True Fairy Tale), Kornel Makuszyński (The Two Who Stole the Moon), Maria Kędziorzyna (Behind the LittleBroken Glass, Gaptuś From the Toy Corner). Her analysis uses disability studies and Igor Saksida’s aesthetic conception of children’s literature. Another key proposal of the paper is for a new chronology inside the history of Polish children’s literature (“thirty years 1919-1949” instead of the current division between “interwar period” and “postwar period”). The author makes an attempt to present the values (tolerance, self-acceptation) which are to be found in these works. She is also focused on the universal character of these values and interesting examples of meeting with disability for the child reader. Another proposal is returning some texts to contemporary culture after the communist period as the important element of that prose is not only its educational aspect but also the aesthetic one.

    This article ponders on the accessibility of art for people with visual impairments. Using the example of Fundacja Wielozmysły (Multi-Sense Foundation), it shows how the visually impaired can be included in the reception and creation of visual culture. The text presents various forms of making art accessible and translating the language of the visual into other senses. It highlights the potential of artistic mediation in the process of sharing and creating events accessible to people with visual impairments and those with regular vision. Accessibility is defined as creating common spaces and searching for places and situations where people with disabilities can participate in the cultural and social life on par with others. The authors of the article refer to disability studies and argue that as long as disability is perceived in a stereotypical manner accessibility cannot exist. They conclude that accessibility can be beneficial for everyone, regardless of disability, and may become a new, democratic form of experiencing art. For people with disabilities, accessibility will be a process that enables them to study visual culture and its products. For others, it may serve as a new form of contact with art.

    This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.

    Niepełnosprawność jest przedmiotem licznych studiów teoretycznych i badań interdyscyplinarnych, zaś bohaterowie z niepełnosprawnością są obecni na kartach literatury od dawna. W rozważaniach teoretycznych na temat niepełnosprawności przywołano koncepcję kultur niepełnosprawności, interdyscyplinarne studia nad niepełnosprawnością, tzw. disability studies, oraz podejście badawcze określane jako crip theory. W artykule podjęto próbę omówienia wybranych kreacji niepełnosprawnych bohaterów współczesnych tekstów literackich z końca XX i początku XXI wieku, które można wykorzystać w praktyce edukacyjnej.
    Disability has been the object of numerous theoretical as well as interdisciplinary studies, and protagonists with disabilities have been present in the literature for a long time. In the theoretical considerations the concept of disability culture, interdisciplinary disability studies and the crip theory have all been evoked. The article attempts to discuss selected creations of disabled protagonists of contemporary literary texts from the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, which can be used in educational practice.

    W drugiej połowie dwudziestego wieku tematyka niepełnosprawności stała się przedmiotem debat akademickich i badań empirycznych prowadzonych na gruncie nauk społecznych w ramach dwóch równolegle rozwijających się nurtów. W pierwszym z nich – socjologii medycyny (medical sociology), uwagę koncentrowano na naturze i przyczynach chorób przewlekłych i niepełnosprawności, stawiając w centrum zainteresowania szeroko rozumiane dysfunkcje zdrowotne, interpretowane najczęściej w ujęciu indywidualnym. W drugim nurcie – studiach nad niepełnosprawnością (disability studies), uwaga badaczy skupiała się przede wszystkim na problemach społecznych (model społeczny) jako źródle niepełnosprawności oraz na adekwatnych im środkach zaradczych. W modelu społecznym niepełnosprawność traktowano przede wszystkim jako pochodną szeroko rozumianych ograniczeń zewnętrznych, a nie jako konsekwencję dysfunkcji na poziomie organizmu. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie założeń teoretycznych tych dwóch nurtów z jednoczesnym uwzględnieniem opinii osób niepełnosprawnych, jako głosu uzupełniającego argumentację w toczonej dyskusji. Opinie na temat istoty własnej niepełnosprawności, jej źródeł i konsekwencji wyrażone zostały przez 45 osób niepełnosprawnych, które wzięły udział w badaniach terenowych zrealizowanych z wykorzystaniem techniki indywidualnych wywiadów pogłębionych. Uczestnicy badania na ogół interpretowali swoją niepełnosprawność i jej przyczyny w perspektywie medycznej (indywidualistycznej). Samą dysfunkcję traktowali jako fundamentalną dla budowania statusu centralnego, w mniejszym stopniu przypisując przyczyny swojej niepełnoprawności uwarunkowaniom społecznym.
    In the second half of the twentieth century, the thematic area of disability became the subject of academic debates and empirical research conducted in the field of social sciences within two simultaneously developing currents. Within the first one, i.e. medical sociology, attention was directed to the nature and causes of chronic diseases and disabilities, focusing on broadly understood health dysfunctions, interpreted most often on an individual basis. Within the second one, namely disability studies, the researchers’ attention was focused primarily on social problems as a source of disability (the social model) and on adequate remedies. In the social model, disability was treated as a derivative of broadly defined external constrains, and not as a consequence of bodily dysfunction. The aim of this article is to present the theoretical assumptions behind these two currents while taking into account the opinion of people with disabilities as a polemical voice in the ongoing discussion. Opinions on the nature of their own disability, its sources, and consequences were expressed by forty-five people with disabilities, who took part in the field research carried out using the technique of individual in-depth interviews. The participants generally interpreted their disability and its causes in a medical (individualistic) perspective. They treated the dysfunction itself as fundamental for building the central status, negating or ignoring the basic premises of the social model.

    W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy materiałów zamieszczanych z okazji dnia osób niepełnosprawnych (3 grudnia) na stronach internetowych prowadzonych przez gminy, powiaty i województwa. Celem było wskazanie głównych schematów postrzegania niepełnosprawności, rozumianej w kategoriach problemu społecznego, przez administrację publiczną (samorządową). Na podstawie analizy ramowania (ang. framing analysis) zostały zidentyfikowane ramy: charytatywna, medyczna i społeczna – korespondujące ze znanymi z literatury przedmiotu modelami niepełnosprawności. Zastosowana perspektywa objęła również rezonans ram – w tym ich wiarygodność, a także potencjał oddziaływania na odbiorców. W artykule podjęta została również refleksja związana ze wzajemną relacją badacza i metody, wskazująca na trudności związane z interpretacją materiałów za pomocą analizy ramowania.
    The article presents the results of the analysis of materials posted on the occasion of the disabled people’s day (December 3rd) on websites run by communes, poviats, and voivodships. The aim was to indicate the main patterns of the perception of disability – understood in terms of a social problem – by public (local) administration Based on the framing analysis, the following frames were identified: charity, medical, and social. They correspond to the models of disability known from the literature on the subject. The applied perspective also covered the frame resonance, including its reliability and the potential of impacting the audience. There was also a reflection regarding the mutual relationship between the researcher and the method, indicating the difficulties related to the interpretation of materials with the application of framing analysis.

    Celem artykułu jest wprowadzenie w tematykę numeru specjalnego poświęconego zaprezentowaniu znaczenia płci, która w relacji z niepełnosprawnością i innymi czynnikami demograficzno-społecznymi wpływa na konstruowane tożsamości i wypełniane role społeczne osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Wymagało to przedstawienia obecnych w tradycji badań nad niepełnosprawnością nurtów metodologicznych i prześledzenia dominujących współcześnie podejść badawczych. Analiza ta pozwoliła zauważyć odchodzenie w ostatnich dekadach od traktowania niepełnosprawności jako nadrzędnej kategorii umożliwiającej wyjaśnienie wszystkich aspektów funkcjonowania osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Zastąpiło ją dostrzeganie wzajemnego wpływu różnych czynników demograficznych i społecznych determinujących położenie społeczne osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Ten trend dostrzegalny jest w badaniach nad płcią prowadzonych w ramach studiów nad niepełnosprawnością. Odrzucają one podejście esencjalistyczne i podążają w kierunku analiz o charakterze konstruktywistycznym i intersekcjonalnym. Takie podejście pozwala na ukazanie wielowymiarowości i złożoności samego zjawiska niepełnosprawności, które wymyka się prostej dychotomii sprawny/niepełnosprawny.
    The aim of the article is to introduce the subject of this special issue devoted to showing the meaning of gender, which – in relation to disability and other demographic and social factors – affects the constructed identities and fulfilled social roles of people with disabilities. This undertaking required demonstrating the methodological trends that are present in the tradition of research on disability, as well as following the research approaches that seem to predominate today. The analysis made it possible to notice a departure in recent decades from treating disability as the superior category that allows one to explain all the aspects of the functioning of people with disabilities. Such a category has been replaced by the perception of the mutual influence of various demographic and social factors determining the social situation of people with disabilities. This trend is noticeable in gender studies conducted as part of disability studies. They reject the essentialist approach and move towards constructivist and intersectional analyses. Such an attitude makes it possible to reveal the multidimensionality and complexity of the phenomenon of disability itself, which – in relation to a person – eludes the simple ‘able/disabled’ dichotomy.

    Artykuł przedstawia cząstkowe rezultaty badań nauczycielskich rekonstrukcji kobiecości, seksualności i dorosłości kobiet z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Przyjęta w nich społecznokulturowa perspektywa niepełnosprawności ujmuje kobiety z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną jako grupę doświadczającą zwielokrotnionej dyskryminacji w rezultacie krzyżowania się kategorii płci i niepełnosprawności. Efekt nakładania się społecznych kategorii stanowiących podstawę różnego rodzaju wykluczeń jest w tym wypadku dodatkowo wzmocniony kulturowym kontekstem postrzegania niepełnosprawności intelektualnej, której zazwyczaj przypisywane są negatywne znaczenia i wartości. Głównym celem badań była rekonstrukcja społeczno-kulturowych aspektów wytwarzania indywidualnych narracji kobiet (nauczycielek i terapeutek) na temat kobiet z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Badania osadzono w inspirowanym fenomenologią podejściu konstruktywistyczno-interpretatywnym, a do zebrania materiału badawczego wykorzystano metodę fenomenograficzną i otwarte wywiady o narracyjnej strukturze. Na podstawie analizy trzech narracji i rekonstrukcji tworzących je znaczeń wyłoniono główne pola semantyczne, a jedno z nich – „kobiecość niewidzialna” zostało przedstawione w artykule.
    The article presents selected results of research project aimed to knowing the studied teachers’ narratives on femininity, sexuality and adulthood of women with intellectual disability, who are perceived as a group experienced by intersectional discrimination as an effect of crossing over the gender and disability categories. Crossing over the categories is also reinforced by cultural context of intellectual disability social perception which is usually connected with negative meanings and values. The main goal of the research based on phenomenological framework and qualitative methodology was to reconstruct the social and cultural aspects of the subjective narratives created by specialists (teachers) on women with intellectual disability. The empirical data was gathered using phenomenographic method and open, in-depth interviews. The analysis and interpretation of three narratives have made possible to reconstruct the meanings and, in result, to emerge the basic semantic fields, one of which called „invisible femininity” is presented in the article.

    Upon ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (2009), Germany shifted from a school system segregated on the basis of disability toward an inclusive classroom policy. Teachers must now put these changes into practice, but they must also change the way they think about children with disabilities in the mainstream classroom. Against an outline of current theoretical concepts of disability, this paper explores and theorizes interviews with practitioners who only recently started teaching inclusively. Teachers express their views on questions of changing teacher identities, constructions of the child with a disability, and frustrations with the current challenges. My ethnographic research reveals how teachers are responding to new policy changes with great uncertainty and on a trial-and-error basis, which unfortunately often proves detrimental to children with disabilities, leading to stigmatization rather than inclusion.
    Po ratyfikacji Konwencji Praw Osób Niepełnosprawnych ONZ (2009) w niemieckim systemie oświatowym w miejsce modelu szkolnictwa oddzielnego dla osób pełno- i niepełnosprawnych wprowadzono politykę klas inkluzyjnych. Nauczyciele muszą obecnie wprowadzać te przekształcenia w życie, a także zmienić podejście do dzieci z niepełnosprawnościami uczęszczających do szkół powszechnych. W artykule nakreślono współczesne koncepcje teoretyczne niepełnosprawności, a na ich tle przedstawiono i omówiono teoretycznie wywiady z praktykami, którzy nauczanie inkluzyjne rozpoczęli dopiero niedawno. Nauczyciele wyrażają swoje poglądy na takie kwestie, jak zmieniająca się tożsamość nauczyciela, wyobrażenia o dziecku z niepełnosprawnością oraz frustracje wywołane bieżącymi trudnościami. Moje etnograficzne badania ukazują również, że w obliczu ostatnich zmian w polityce edukacyjnej nauczyciele wykazują znaczne poczucie niepewności oraz skłonność do działania na zasadzie prób i błędów, co niestety ma często szkodliwy wpływ na dzieci z niepełnosprawnościami i zamiast do inkluzji prowadzi raczej do stygmatyzacji.

    The presented research is a microethnographic report from a visual ethnography undertaken in May 2016, in 6 Japanese schools and 1 adult support center with disabilities located on island Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The study deals with a issues of the educational material culture and refers to the study of space and school artifacts designed in schools for students with special educational needs – understood as intellectual disabilities and for adults with such potential as well. The research was grounded in E. Schein’s organizational culture, furthermore on the concept of private space and public space described by T. Tamura and my author’s concept developed at the reinterreted role of the handicapped human in stationary institution published by W. Wolfensberger’s (1969).

    Disability studies is a dynamically developing discipline; however, it usually focuses on the Anglophone world. Scholars representing this field often concentrate on deconstructing popular stereotypes and revealing hidden systemic discrimination. Although more and more initiatives are taken up – such as disability pride – it seems that an affirmative approach to disability remains in the minority. This article is a proposal for going beyond the mentioned schemes. Entering the area of the Latin American culture, I try to verify whether the findings of disability studies can be confirmed there. Proposing the interpretation of dis-ability in terms of resource, I want to broaden the affirmative perspective on disability. This paper aims at a critical reflection on the creative potential of visual impairment used by blind and low-vision Mexican artists in the creative process. Driving upon the research conducted between 2020 and 2022, I argue that they use their visual impairment as a resource in their artistic activity. I distinguish four aspects of the functioning of visual impairment as a resource in artistic work: inspiration, representation, non-ocularcentric imagination, and accessibility.
    Studia o niepełnosprawności to dyscyplina rozwijająca się prężnie, ale najczęściej koncentrująca się na świecie anglosaskim. W swoich poszukiwaniach badacze tego nurtu zazwyczaj skupiają się na dekonstruowaniu powszechnych stereotypów i odkrywaniu systemowej dyskryminacji. Choć podejmowanych jest coraz więcej inicjatyw typu disability pride, to wydaje się, że wciąż afirmatywne podejście do niepełnosprawności jest w mniejszości. Artykuł jest propozycją wyjścia poza wspomniane powyżej schematy. Wkraczając w krąg kultury latynoamerykańskiej, autorka stara się zbadać, w jakim stopniu dotychczasowe ustalenia studiów o niepełnosprawności mają tam zastosowanie. Proponując rozpatrywanie niepełnosprawności w kategorii zasobu, chcę poszerzyć afirmatywne spojrzenie na niepełnosprawność. Celem artykułu jest krytyczny namysł nad kreatywnym potencjałem niepełnosprawności wzroku, wykorzystywanym przez meksykańskich niewidomych i słabowidzących artystów w procesie twórczym. Na podstawie badań przeprowadzonych w latach 2020–2022 autorka argumentuje, że wykorzystują oni swoją niepełnosprawność jako zasób w działalności twórczej. Wyróżnia cztery aspekty działania niepełnosprawności wzroku jako zasobu w pracy artystycznej: inspirację, reprezentację, nieokulocentryczną wyobraźnię oraz dostępność.

    The article analyses the process of workshops and the staging of the performance Room of absentees (Pokój nieobecnych) directed by Joanna Pawlik within the framework of Cricoteka otwarta in collaboration with people (artists and non-artists) with and without disabilities. The article is based on the author’s participant observation. She analyses it in relation to many theories, such as participatory art, devised theatre, disability studies, art by artists with disabilities, art therapy, and crip time. The author shows how the same working conditions affect differently people with different bodies or senses, and how the rules have to be changed in the process to accommodate different needs. The relationship between the institutional framework and the status of the artist is also one of the topics. The article ends with a call for establishing an institution where Joanna Pawlik could work with her team on a regular basis rather than from project to project.

W recenzji zwrócono uwagę na perspektywy (krytycznego) wykorzystania tez amerykańskiej badaczki w studiach literaturoznawczych, wskazane zostały przykłady konkretnych utworów, zasługujących na reinterpretacje w tak zakreślonych ramach.
    This article is a contextual discussion of Sunaura Taylor’s pioneering book Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation, dedicated to a parallel critique of anthropocentrism and ableism as two interlocking systems of oppression that propel each other. The review notes the prospects for a (critical) use of the American scholar’s thesis in literary studies, and points out examples of specific works deserving reinterpretation within such a framework.

    Culture takes an increasingly important position in the debate about the accessibility of public space for persons with disabilities. Many questions about how to include them in cultural life have emerged. The subject of the present article is a theoretical reflection on actions taken in this area by cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations. Basing on a comparative analysis of two events of such kind, and using the achievements of special pedagogy, I present two models of cultural accessibility for persons with disabilities: the separative and integrative model. I ponder on their advantages and disadvantages. I conclude by claiming that both can be useful in the process of making culture accessible for persons with disabilities, providing that the beneficiaries will be allowed to choose what kind of events they will attend. These considerations accord with the recently burgeoning field of accessibility studies, while Disability Studies serves as a broad theoretical frame.
    W debacie na temat dostępności przestrzeni publicznej dla osób z niepełnosprawnościami kultura zajmuje coraz ważniejsze miejsce. Pojawia się wiele pytań o to, jak najlepiej włączać osoby z niepełnosprawnościami w życie kulturalne. Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest namysł teoretyczny nad działaniami podejmowanymi w tym zakresie przez instytucje kultury i organizacje pozarządowe. Na podstawie analizy porównawczej dwóch imprez tego typu i w oparciu o dorobek pedagogiki specjalnej przedstawiam dwa modele udostępniania kultury osobom z niepełnosprawnościami: segregacyjny oraz integracyjny. Analizuję ich wady i zalety. Konkluduję stwierdzając, że oba z nich mogą okazać się przydatne w procesie udostępniania kultury, pod warunkiem, że odbiorca będzie miał swobodę wyboru, z wydarzeń którego rodzaju skorzysta. Całość rozważań wpisuję się w rodzące się właśnie studia nad dostępnością. Za szerszą ramę teoretyczną służy mi perspektywa studiów o niepełnosprawności.

    The article examines how Maria Reimann’s autoethnographic book Nie przywitam się z państwem na ulicy: szkic o doświadczeniu niepełnosprawności (I Won’t Greet You in the Street: A Sketch about the Experience of Disability, 2019) addresses and problematizes such essential concepts for contemporary disability studies as: disability identity, coming out as disabled and, most importantly, disability community. It focuses on the way in which the book seeks to reconcile the seemingly contradictory and conflicting ideas about disability. It also argues that by deconstructing the disabled/non-disabled dichotomy, Reimann reinvents the idea of disability community, imagining it as a galaxy of individuals who can only find a sense of connection by recognizing the uniqueness and distinctiveness of another’s bodily and social experiences.

    Disability is a natural part of the human experience across the world and an integral part of the human condition. However, people with disabilities are often seen as different from „the norm” of human being and as a result their needs are marginalized in their societies. The access to many aspects of social life is limited for them. Initially, disability was recognized in the medical and social context as a dysfunction requiring medical treatment, „special” schools, workplaces or social benefits due to incapacity for work. Over time, the influence of the environment on the functioning of a person with a disability became the subject of interest. The importance of shaping space for people with disabilities is developed in disciplines dealing with urban planning, spatial planning and architecture. Even the concept of „geography of disability” lately came into existence. Geographic information systems offer analytical methods and tools to explore various spatial concepts and their impact on the functioning of people with disabilities. Their application is growing and strengthening GIS in disability research can contribute to greater autonomy of people with disabilities and promote their integration into society. One of the impulses for the development of GIS in this area are undoubtedly regulations guaranteeing people with disabilities access to the physical environment, transport and other facilities, information and communication as well as services intended for use by the general public, and obliging not only public entities, but more and more often private entities to ensure accessibility. The aim of the article is to indicate what new challenges were created by the legal systems and what expectations can be addressed to GIS.

    W artykule zarysowano społeczno-historyczne uwarunkowania, które doprowadziły do powstania i rozkwitu nowego nurtu badań nad niepełnosprawnością – Disability Studies oraz popularyzacji społecznej definicji niepełnosprawności, na której opiera się KPON. Główną część tekstu poświęcono krytycznej analizie wdrażania art. 24 KPON w polskich szkołach wyższych z perspektywy obowiązujących aktów prawnych oraz stosowania mechanizmu racjonalnych usprawnień. Przedstawiono dane statystyczne na temat studentów i doktorantów z niepełnosprawnościami oraz zaprezentowano główne wnioski z raportów tematycznych, autorstwa Rzecznika Praw Obywatelskich oraz środowisk osób z niepełnosprawnościami. W ostatniej części artykułu omówiono wątek niepełnosprawności w świetle procesu tworzenia Ustawy 2.0 wraz ze studium przypadku poprawki nr 47.
    The paper outlines socio-historical factors that led to the emergence of a new trend in doing research on disability issue – Disability Studies and the dissemination of a social definition of disability, on which the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is based. The main part of the text provides a critical analysis of the implementation process of article 24 CRPD at Polish universities with regard to relevant regulatory acts and using reasonable accommodations. Next, statistical data on students and PhD candidates with disabilities are presented. The main conclusions from thematic reports by the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights and by the disabled persons organizations are also presented. In the last part, the disability issue is discussed in the context of creating the Law on Higher Education 2.0 with the case study of amendment no. 47.

    Opis:
    While inequalities and injustices originating from the social categorisations of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or nationality seem to be a general focus of both development and postcolonial discourses, the issue of disability seems to be rather overshadowed. Therefore, since even the World Health Organisation (WHO) itself and its Mental Health Improvements for Nations Development (MIND) project represents disability as a barrier to development – so as a factor globally contributing to poverty, inequality, and injustice and not the other way around – there is a need to extend our attention when investigating exploiting and disempowering power relations inherent in the 21st century that aim at eliminating human differences. The present theoretical inquiry concentrates thus on emphasising a call for bringing together the disability and postcolonial debates in the investigation of social-justice-based development and the role education might in general play in the realisation of just societies and the equality of all individuals around the world. The paper starts by shortly introducing the concepts of development, disability, and postcolonial theory, and then aims at accentuating the need of a critical global disability studies for the sake of decolonising current practices and making present, marginalised, and disaccredited knowledges of a complex and heterogeneous disability experience. Finally, the paper highlights that a decolonised understanding of disability should be inherent in present educational agendas – integral to development processes – because human differences should not be factors that impoverish but that empower human relationships.
    Nierówności i niesprawiedliwości wynikające z klasyfikowania/różnicowania ludzi ze względu na rasę, płeć, orientację seksualną, pochodzenie etniczne, wyznanie lub narodowość stanowią przedmiot zainteresowania zarówno dyskursu rozwojowego, jak i dyskursu postkolonialnego, podczas gdy kwestia niepełnosprawności pozostaje w cieniu. Tymczasem zgodnie z założeniami Światowej Organizacji zdrowia (WHO), w tym realizowanego przez nią projektu Poprawa zdrowia Psychicznego na rzecz Rozwoju Narodów (MIND), niepełnosprawność to bariera rozwoju, czynnik globalnie przyczyniający się do ubóstwa, nierówności i niesprawiedliwości, a nie odwrotnie. Dlatego też kategoria niepełnosprawności powinna być brana pod uwagę w istotnych z perspektywy wyzwań XXI w. badaniach poświęconych wykorzystywaniu i osłabianiu relacji władzy w celu wyeliminowania różnic społecznych. Postulat ten koresponduje z założeniami formułowanych obecnie koncepcji teoretycznych, które podkreślają konieczność czerpania zarówno z rozważań dotyczących niepełnosprawności, jaki i z postkolonialnych debat na temat sprawiedliwości społecznej i roli, jaką edukacja może odgrywać w budowaniu sprawiedliwych społeczeństw i urzeczywistnianiu idei równości osób na całym świecie. Artykuł wprowadza w koncepcje rozwoju, niepełnosprawności i teorii postkolonialnej, a także akcentuje potrzebę krytycznych i wieloaspektowych badań nad niepełnosprawnością w celu dekolonizacji aktualnych praktyk oraz sprawienia, by marginalizowana i dyskredytowana wiedza o złożonym i heterogenicznym doświadczeniu niepełnosprawności stała się obecna w przestrzeni publicznej. Wreszcie tekst ten ma na celu podkreślenie, że zdekolonizowane rozumienie niepełnosprawności powinno być nieodłącznym elementem obecnych programów edukacyjnych – integralnym z procesami rozwojowymi – ponieważ różnice międzydzy ludźmi nie powinny być czynnikami zubożającymi, ale wzmacniającymi relacje międzyludzkie.

    The purpose of the article is to show the difficulties that are encountered by a researcher dealing with the problems of persons with intellectual disability. The article stresses some notions related to ontological and epistemological issues, the source of which are questions about the possibilities and manner of exploring mental handicap. They refer not only to the broadly-understood problems of handicap and the methodological consequences of identifications, but also the manner of diagnosis and analysis that are characteristic of particular fields of science. The article raises the notions related to a field researcher’s workshop, difficulties in data acquisition, the emotional context of exploring the environment of persons with disabilities, as well as the ethical and moral dilemmas that provide an indispensable element of such a research undertaking.

    Objectives: To elucidate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and disability due to low back pain (LBP) among care workers. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 656 care workers having experienced LBP in the year prior to the year of this study. The Roland-Morris Disability questionnaire (RDQ) and self-reported questionnaires regarding LBP, fear of movement, depressive symptom, psychosocial factors, intensity of pain, and duration of pain were administered, and a medical examination was performed. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the international definition agreed in 2009. Out of the 656 care workers, we included 316 care workers (response rate: 48.2%) who had fully completed the questionnaires as the study sample (males: 13.6%, median age = 51 years old, range: 35–74 years old). To examine the association between MetS and the level of disability due to LBP, we used the Poisson regression analysis and estimated crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR). Results: Out of the 316 care workers, 52 (16.5%) were diagnosed as having MetS. Metabolic syndrome was significantly associated with the RDQ score (adjusted PR: 1.57, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17–2.11) after adjusting for covariates, such as age, sex, fear of movement, job demands, social support, intensity of pain, and duration of pain. Conclusions: This study showed that MetS was independently associated with disability due to LBP among care workers. A multidisciplinary intervention taking MetS into consideration may be an effective way to reduce disability due to LBP in people with both LBP and MetS. Przedstawiono w zarysie dotychczasowe doświadczenia oraz obecne wyzwania w dziedzinie dostosowywania kształcenia akademickiego do potrzeb osób z różnego rodzaju niepełnosprawnościami.
    The article analyzes the activities of Polish institutions of higher education to create conditions of full participation in the educational process for students with disabilities and also describes the tasks undertaken in this regard in relation to: the students with disabilities, academic staff, student community and the physical environment. It outlines previous experiences and current challenges in the field of adaptation of the academic education to the needs of people with different types of disabilities.
