Opis:
Telecollaboration seems to be a present emerging practice in education. In this sense, telecollaboration is wide and covers several areas of work and study, and it can also concern hybrid ones. This research focuses on developing learners’ digital competence, English language skills for professional purposes, and knowledge on recycling matters through a telecollaborative project work. The framework for this study is based on Spiers and Bartlett’s (2012) model on developing language, content, and digital skills, and it also focuses on the taxonomy of communication acts in professional contexts introduced by Lehman and DuFrene (2013). Students had to work collaboratively in groups of four students, from two different institutions and countries, and create a blog on the topic of recycling matters, analyzing the current problems and offering possible solutions. Students were tested before and after the project in order to measure their progress within the different areas of study. Results showed that this telecollaborative project work was potentially beneficial; the experimental group performed better in all the areas tested after this project. In conclusion, it seems that telecollaboration projects helped develop the target skills in this research following an integrated learning approach.

Opis:
Despite calls for contemporary English teachers to have strong digital literacy skills, there is a reported lack of digital training in English teacher education programs (Hubbard, 2008; Kessler, 2006). However, in this environment where higher-level digital skills and knowledge are criteria for prospective English teacher applicants, which digital literacies do contemporary EFL teachers possess? How confident are they using technology to augment their English lessons? How can the digital literacies of in-service EFL teachers be developed? This study aimed to survey the digital literacies of 42 English teachers employed at a private Japanese University. The questionnaire (adapted from Son, Robb & Charismiadji, 2011) considers ownership and accessibility to computers, ability to perform tasks electronically, personal and professional use of computers, CALL training, and interest in CALL. In short, this study found that teachers in this English program were very confident using digital technology to support their teaching both inside and outside their classrooms. In addition, respondents recognised the importance of developing their digital literacies and they were actively pursuing advanced skills.

Opis:
The present study aims to explore perceptions of young learners and EFL teachers towards benefits and barriers of digital literacy. Eight young learners and five EFL teachers took part in this qualitative study. In-depth semi-structured interviews were employed to collect qualitative data. The results depict that there are benefits and barriers of digital literacy for young learners in learning English. The benefits of digital literacy include improving young learners’ writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills, getting used to authentic materials, increasing frequency of digital technology use, enhancing online collaboration between teacher-learners and learners-learners. However, this study reports that digital literacy also has some negative impact for young learners. Problems with weak signals which affect difficult internet access still remain a problem. Contents of online digital materials are not easy for young learners to interpret and convert into simple, self-regulated information. Moreover, digital literacy tools are considered to be expensive. These barriers might be influenced by other problems such as complexity of digital literacy tools, different comprehension levels among young learners, young learners and EFL teachers’ lack of digital literacy experiences. In conclusion, the results give valuable insights in how to go about integration of digital literacy tools for young learners.

This article examines problems related to digital trends in economies and societies from two perspectives: the extension of a digital economy to social dimensions, and the role of digital government services in regional cohesion perspectives in Latvia. This methodological approach could serve as a tool for integrating a number of main goals related to the digitalisation trends in the EU, that require support of societies as well as the improvement of social welfare at the regional and national levels. The contribution aims to offer insight into the concept of social investment and innovation as well as co-creation concept and the impact of digitalisation of public services on regional cohesion. The study observes these implications in relation to the need to expand and adapt the content and approach of the digital services implementation. The further digital development as a precondition for diminishing regional and wellbeing divide, facilitating administrative processes for people and entrepreneurs, as well as e-services availability in Latvia is discussed. The article concludes that efficient decision-making related to social investment and innovation for improving social welfare at regional and national levels needs implementation of digitalised services in a wider scale as they inevitably become more important due to the increased digital competitiveness of countries.

Online learning has become a highly effective tool for many language learning institutions and educational environments. However, very limited attention has been directed towards the teacher element in online learning environments in ESP/EAP instruction. To fill this gap, this study investigated the attitudes of 91 Iranian EAP instructors towards the implementation of online EAP instruction. A mixed-methods design was employed in this study, with both semi-structured interviews and questionnaires used to examine the participants’ perspectives. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of the participants hold positive attitudes towards the implementation of online EAP instruction while they are fully aware of the challenges and obstacles to the implementation of online EAP instruction in the Iranian context. Several limitations, including the lack of online EAP teacher training, the lack of facilities for online learning implementation, low digital literacy levels of instructors and students, and the lack of online instruction infrastructures were identified and reported. The participants also pointed out several practical measures and suggestions in order to pave the way for incorporating online EAP instruction which can be considered by EAP policy-makers and course designers. The study can have practical and theoretical implications for the renewal of EAP instruction in Iran and in other countries.

Research background: SMEs' concern for the digital literacy of their workforce, their interest in increasing digital literacy among employees, and securing their digital platforms, have been major issues in their digital transformation process. To reduce those obstacles, the dynamic capabilities of SMEs included in the Resource-based View (RBV) might be an effective solution since they help companies be more competitive and proactive against the threats they face in the digitalization process. Purpose of the article: This research aims to investigate whether SMEs' dynamic capabilities positively contribute to their digital transformation process. Methods: In line with the proposed relationships, this paper analyzes SMEs from Czechia by running Ordinal Logistic Regression analyses. The research sample is created by stratified random sampling and purposive sampling methods. The research data is collected via telephone surveys. Findings & value added: This research does not find a positive relationship between the dynamic capabilities of SMEs and the digital transformation process. While the results related to digital literacy are negatively associated with digital transformation, no significant relationship exists between security actions and the digital transformation of SMEs. This paper extends the scope of RBV on the digital transformation of SMEs by analyzing various dynamic capabilities of SMEs that have not been included in a sole study. Moreover, the perceptions of SME executives are considered by this research to provide effective solutions for the problems they face in digital transformation. Having a joint venture agreement with well-experienced IT companies, having a network with partner firms, looking for funding opportunities in the EU, participating in some practical training, and providing internships for bachelor students might enable SMEs to hit their targets in digital transformation.

Opis:
Digital literacy and related digital competences are now an integral part of media work. Changes in technology and audience consumption habits have forced media professionals to acquire a wide range of digital skills. These include not only technical skills, such as mastery of digital tools and platforms, but also the ability to communicate and present content effectively in a digital environment. The aim of this study is to explore the level of digital competences of students who work in university media, compared to those who study at the faculty but are not part of its media. It also focuses on identifying the level of each of the DigComp framework’s digital competence areas that future media workers should develop in order to remain competitive. Research has shown that students working in university media have a higher total score in digital competence (75%) than students not working in (university) media (65%). It was also found that the most developed area for both groups of students is Communication and collaboration, followed by Information and data literacy. In contrast, the weakest area for both groups is Digital content creation. In terms of specific competencies, both groups have the same most developed competency, Netiquette, and the least developed competency, Programming. In general, however, students not working in (university) media have a total score in digital competence as well as in individual areas at the same level as the Generation Z average, and students working in university media are above the Generation Z average in all areas, confirming that working in media alongside media studies has a positive impact on raising levels of digital competence.

Creating content providing systems and programming database connections, queries, and complex web platforms are primarily the tasks of information technology. However, the professional and content-related preparation of service engineering and the customisation and effective use of content providing systems belong to the librarians’ competences and therefore constitute an interdisciplinary area of our training. The so called Content Development Working Group of the Institute of Library and Information Science of the Faculty of Humanities at Eötvös Loránd University has, therefore, had a dual purpose since the mid-2000s. On the one hand, it involves future librarians in projects yielding tangible outcomes for the professional community, thus helping the students acquire competences relating to various aspects of the librarian profession through motivating and creative work. On the other hand, the working group studies and analyses the instruments of content provision, especially network-based information services. The results obtained through joint research and the display platform created are also published as a complex project, thus introducing students into the network-based forms of research support and scientific information provision. As an integral part of a modern librarian’s duties is to inform social media users of existing digital collections, within the framework of the programme we also test the effectiveness of libraries’ social media presence through short excerpts of our sample projects. Bearing all the above in mind, this paper aims to provide a detailed description of (1) the content development projects, (2) the experimental research projects and (3) the collaborative projects of the Content Development Working Group devised to enhance trainee librarians’ interdisciplinary competences. The study also highlights how the outcomes of the projects are integrated into the disciplinary (BA and MA) degree programmes of the Institute. To demonstrate the broader context of the undertaking, the study also includes a short section on the educational aspects of e-books and e-publishing and presents some of the internationally recognised results, the international connections and the future plans of the Centre for Digital Humanities founded in the Institute in 2017.

The empirical baseline study aims at investigating the types of digital media and how frequently these are employed as well as the specific purposes they are used for in the Russian language classroom. Aside from addressing the positive effects that arise from working with digital media in classroom settings, also challenges that Russian language teachers face when implementing digital technologies are discussed. The data were collected in a mixed-methods procedure: quantitative data from online-questionnaires and qualitative data from face-to-face semistructured interviews. The data represent the teachers’ perspective on the one hand and that of the pupils on the other. The data from the online surveys were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics, those from the interviews with qualitative content analysis whereby also individual case studies were conducted. This paper presents major study results and closes with implications for teacher training programmes as well as for future research.

Opis:
So-called dark patterns are widely discussed in game design. This phenomenon raises concerns for gaming education because numerous dark patterns trick players into real money transactions or gambling. A major obstacle to the practical assessment of the severity of a ‘dark’ pattern is the very definition of ‘game patterns’, basing solely on action-oriented structures. In order to take into account not only abstract expressions of the game system, but also the experience of the player, as well as the diverse contexts in which games are played, this article proposes to use the semiotic model of the ‘ludeme’. A ludeme is a minimal element in game design consisting of a grapheme, an acousteme, and a motifeme. We begin by explaining and situating the conceptual framework of the ludeme theory, with a specific interest in its application to repetitions of the same game element over time and through different digital games. Then, the theoretical framework is applied to SimCity BuildIt and particularly to the ‘dark patterns’ in it. In the last part, paths for further developments of the model of ludemic analysis are discussed, with regard to its relevance for media education and digital game literacy.

Opis:
At the outbreak of the COVID-19, governments, health organizations and large technology companies were not prepared for the measures to be taken against the disease. Contact tracking was widely carried out using location data to prevent the spread of COVID-19 with the use of technological tools, especially smartphones. In this epidemic, economic difficulties also emerged due to the lockdown imposed by the governments. For this reason, social distancing and contact tracing applications have become widespread in order to prevent the disease as soon as possible. Such strategies negatively affected individuals’ perceptions of privacy, because authorities gave priority to collecting data from individuals in order to prevent the epidemic. On the other hand, non-governmental organizations suggested that “privacy-first” and “decentralized” approaches should be preferred instead of “data-first” and “centralized” approaches. In this direction, Google and Apple companies have developed a decentralized common API to help fight the virus, which also complies with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. And in particular, Google has regularly shared Google Community Mobility Reports (GCMR) publicly by anonymizing the data it collects from Google Maps. Using these reports people and authorities can get movement data about different categories of places such as retail and recreation, supermarkets and pharmacies, parks, public transport, workplaces and residential. Our aim is to find out whether individuals in Turkey are aware that their location and movement data are being tracked by Google Maps and contact tracing apps for preventing the spread of COVID-19. We also examined their motivations for downloading location tracing apps and whether they have been taking necessary steps to protect their privacy. We investigated whether they had concerns about the possible future use of contact tracing data collected by the health authorities in Turkey and other institutions like Google. The scope of the study covers smartphone users. We collected data through an online survey using Google Forms. Our survey consists mostly of narrative questions, where we asked respondents to imagine various scenarios where app manufacturers, mobile phone operators/manufacturers, or the government were using some of their data to study or mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Then, between 12.15.2020/01.02.2021 we distributed the survey link to the participants through various social media networks. We reported the results of the data of 444 people collected anonymously by quantitative analysis methods. As a result of the study, it was determined that the digital literacy levels of the individuals are high due to their high education level. Despite this, it has been revealed that the participants do not read the terms and conditions offered in apps. Individuals who care about privacy expressed their willingness to share their data for the sake of public health. As an answer to the main question of our study, it was concluded that the participants’ knowledge of GCMR was insufficient. As a matter of fact, it was understood that individuals were indecisive and worried about the use of their data by the authorities in the future due to the uncertainty experienced during the pandemic period.
Aby pomóc w walce z wirusem, firmy Google i Apple opracowały zdecentralizowany wspólny interfejs API, zgodny także z ogólnym rozporządzeniem Unii Europejskiej o ochronie danych. W szczególności Google regularnie udostępniało publicznie „raporty mobilności społeczności Google” (ang. Google Community Mobility Reports – GCMR), anonimizując dane gromadzone z Map Google. Korzystając z tych raportów, użytkownicy uzyskiwali dane dotyczące ruchu w takich kategoriach miejsc, jak: handel detaliczny i rekreacja, supermarkety i apteki, parki i transport publiczny, miejsca pracy i zamieszkania.

Opis:
Currently, in the context of an introduction of digital ICT in education, we are facing a problem of determinants in successful digital education that are compatible with the primary educational goals. Under the term significant determinants we understand digital competencies of teachers that necessarily become a subject of development. These competencies are pragmatically reflected in the frames or documents that describe the pedagogical training of future teachers. The author’s intention is to outline an alternative holistic perspective of understanding pedagogical training in future teachers and their digital competencies that are based more on phenomenology and hermeneutics. This perspective reflects a psychagogic approach to education. The author believes that future student training is expressed in „ars docendi“ also in digital education and this „ars docendi“ cannot be achieved without student’s self-reflection of their relationship with ICT, but especially not without self-understanding in terms of values and meaning. This self-understanding leads to moral self-awareness and responsibility. The author points out that it is necessary to accommodate the future teacher’s personal self-reflection and self-projection and incorporate also those psychagogically relevant elements that would be complementary in the process of developing digital competencies. This will allow overcoming challenges of future teacher education, considering the psychagogic needs in education.

Online toxicity refers to a spectrum of problematic communicative phenomena that unfold in various ways on social media platforms. Most of the current efforts to contain it focus on computational techniques to detect online toxicity and build a regulatory architecture. In this paper, we highlight the importance of focusing on the social phenomena of toxicity, and particularly, exploring the public understanding and future imaginaries of toxic debates. To explore how users construe online toxicity and envisage the future of online discussions, we examine 41 scenarios produced by European experts from the field of technology and culture. Through a content analysis informed by a narrative approach and insights from futures studies, we identify three myths that characterize the future scenarios: technological disruption, societal fragmentation, and digital Enlightenment. After a discussion of their relations, we conclude by stressing the importance of platform transparency and user empowerment.
