The World is strongly dependent on crude oil for its transport needs. In order to diminish this dependence, we need to introduce clean, CO2-efficient, secure and affordable transportation fuels. The current production of liquid biofuels in the EU25 is less than 1% of the market. Recent assessments have concluded that the 2010 targets, 18 Mtoe used in the transport sector, are unlikely to be achieved. There can be three basic possibilities of accomplishing this target: i) use of alcohols (first of all ethanol) and their mixing with petrol; ii) use of fatty acids esters (methyl or ethyl) of vegetable oils and their mixing with diesel fuel, iii) use of synthetic hydrocarbons of the synthetic gas coming from biomass resources and eventually their mixing with other "classical" hydrocarbons. This paper presents a novel way of utilizing alcohols as fuels for a diesel engine. It is proposed to use heavy alcohols as a mix with vegetable oils and conventional diesel fuel. It is presented the way to use alcohols. Namely, the use of heavy alcohols as a solvent for vegetable oil (named the biomix or BM) and after the obtainment of the thickness, which would be approximate to diesel fuel, mixing the biomix with diesel fuel to obtained biomixdiesel (BMD). This solution will be shown for example with butanol as heavy alcohol, rape oil as vegetable oil and conventional diesel fuel. The investigations are carried out with a simple diesel engine on the engine test bed. Main parameters of engine (power output, torque, specifically fuel consumption) and the main exhaust gas component (in this case CO, NOx, PM) will be investigated. There were better results achieved than one expected. Opposed to existing experiences, the maximum of power output and the torque of engine are higher in the whole range of the rotational speed of the engine crankshaft when the engine biomixdiesel (BMD) is reinforced. The addition of the component biomix to fuel influences the specific fuel consumption. Generally, with the larger part of the component biomix the specific fuel consumption grows. Because the power of engine also grows up one should expect that in exploitation the specific fuel consumption should not increase. Very important is that this fuel could be used to reinforce old, existing now and the future diesel engines. The production of butanol is known (from biomass and in other way with electrolysis of ethanol). The possibility to get butanol from ethanol gives a very good perspective for the use of ethanol from today's overproduction and moreover without the essential change of infrastructure. All this leads to the conclusion that fulfilling of the expected requirements of European Union regarding the ecofuels is fully possible.

The article justifies the need to analyse diagnostic relations for turbocharger operation purposes. Types of turbochargers most frequently used in modern marine engines have been presented. Turbocharger decomposition has been conducted on a selected example. The influence of typical inefficiencies in respect to symptom value changes has been worked out for each heat engine and sub-system. Validation of selected cause and effect relations has been based on operational experience in the technical scale.

Compression ignition engines have no possibility for self-regeneration of DPF and regeneration requires additional energy for soot combustion (additional fuel or electric energy) after some period of the engine work as a result of closing of substrate pores by soot. The innovation method takes into account a self-regeneration of diesel particle filter by use of special heat recovery system. The paper shows one of possible design of DPF self-regeneration. The exhaust temperature behind the turbine and catalytic converter is very low and for an increasing of gas temperature before DPF, the heat from soot combustion can be used. The preliminary studies show a possibility of using the special design of DPF with heat recovery system. The paper presents results obtained from simulations based on one-dimensional model of such system and analysis of increasing the heat recovery ratio by change of geometry of DPF. The gas heat exchange formulas between DPF and the heat exchange model are partly included in the paper. The preliminary results of calculations show the possibility of increase of exhaust gases in front of DPF about 20%, which enables a continuous regeneration of DPF. Heat recovery ratio is depends on soot combustion rate on the wall of DPF monolith. The method enables to recover some part of energy which is lost in the conventional DPF. The paper is a part of further work in European project FP6 IPSY.

The introduction of the electronically controlled low-speed diesel engines has raised a number of new problems - caused mainly by the influence of these electronic system settings on the combustion process. The wide set of the combustion press settings is now available for the chief engineers on the board of the ship and for the shipyard experts during the sea trials. This opens many new possibilities for the combustion process optimization but also causes the danger of the serious engine malfunction due to the improper settings. The paper presents the mathematical model of the electronically controlled low-speed marine diesel engine ant the special attention is paid to the available settings of the combustion process. The effective compression ratio, the injection timing and the exhaust valve setting can be adjusted in a similar manner like in the actual engine. The combustion pressure curves, the mean indicated pressure, the exhaust gas temperature can be observed when changing the combustion settings. The paper describes in detail the results of the several most typical simulations like change of the given combustion pressure increase, the change of the effective compression ratio, the change of the exhaust valve opening timing and the change of the maximum load setting.

A new approach is needed to test particle filters for retrofitting Diesel engines. Considering the toxicity of the particles as also the physical and chemical attributes of particle filters, the optimal scheme is to test the components themselves independent of the deployment. That scheme ensures the highest effectiveness with least effort. It also enables evaluation of worst-case situations and assesses the hazards of secondary emissions. The Swiss standard SNR 277 205, which mandates the VERT test procedure, is a first step in that direction. The solution is derived from the physics of the filter media. The filtration of fine particles essentially depends on the particle size and the space velocity. The attributes of the emitting engine are only insignificantly relevant. Hence the physics and chemistry of particle filters can be investigated independent of the engine and its deployment duty. This concept facilitates a very thorough investigation of the size-dependent filtration, aging susceptibility, secondary emissions and extreme situations. Filter systems, which pass this detailed test, perform equally well in every retrofit configuration. This filter test concept was implemented 1998 in the VERT project and is successful for assessing retrofltting [4]. VERT approved fllter systems are already deployed in the Low Emission Zones of Europe, North and South America.

In the next few decades, the resources of oil will be depleted. From the other hand, growing market and usage of oils cause increase of oil price. Additionally, only some countries have oil deposits large enough to be independent from foreign suppliers. All these reasons show need for searching and development of new fuels, which can replace traditional ones produced from oil. One of the solutions for Diesel engines are bio-fuels produced from various vegetable oils like rapeseed, coconut or palm oil. Nowadays, the majority of new Diesel engines are equipped with Common Rail fuel injections system. It enables to achieve higher power of the engine, lower emissions and lower fuel consumption. This suggests that the Common rail system should be also utilized in Diesel engines supplied with bio-fuels, produced from various plants, as it was mentioned above. However, the bio-fuels have some properties much different from those of conventional Diesel fuel, for example they usually have significantly higher viscosity. In consequence, the fuel supply and fuel injection systems require some modifications. The paper presents results of the experimental test of Common Rail Diesel engine supplied with four fuels: standard Diesel fuel, rapeseed oil and two mixtures of these fuels: 70 percent of Diesel with 30 percent of rape seed oil and 50 percent of Diesel fuel with 50 percent of rape seed oil. For the research, a new test bench was built in Faculty of Production Engineering, Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The main element of the test bench is one cylinder, direct injection engine Farymann Diesel 18W. Originally, the engine was equipped with mechanical Bosh direct injection system, which was replaced with Common Rail system. The test bench enables measurements of various parameters: torque, pressure inside the cylinder, temperature of cooling water and exhaust gases, emissions etc. The tests of the modified engine were conducted with use of several types of piston and injector.

The microemulsion is the emulsion with dimension of molecules approx. micrometre and smaller. Such microemulsion of water and diesel oil creates new quality and lets on obtainment ecological and economic of effects, as well as eliminates the disadvantageous influence common emulsions, or unprofitable effects of the injection of water to inlet system of the engine, direct to combustion chambers, as well as the sequential injection of water direct to combustion chambers. The essence of apply of the microemulsion is also improve catalytic influence of small molecules of water on combustion process, what, beside decreasing temperature combustion gases, influences both emission level components of toxic combustion gases, as and the level of the specific fuel consumption. The paper presents different ways of microemulsion production, novel way of microemulsion production, which does not demand apply of mixers and suffers obtainment of microemulsion with the volumetric content of water in diesel oil do 40% under conditions of laboratory and stabile the microemulsion with content of water in diesel oil to 25%. Results of laboratory research involving basic parameters of the microemulsion and engine researches with measurements emission ingredients of toxic exhaust gases and fuel consumptions are presented involving basic parameters of the microemulsion and engine researches with measurements emission ingredients (NOx, soot, fuel consumption) of toxic exhaust gases and fuel consumptions are presented in the paper.

Transestrification process in the proposed solution does not appear. This has large economic meaning. The investment amount (the transestrification plant) is not necessary. The power consumption to get fuel is lower. Vegetable oils are fully used (glycerine is not produced). BMD has stable parameters. The usage of existing infrastructure to this transportation is enough. Very important is that this fuel could be used to reinforce old, existing now and the future diesel engines. The production of butanol is known. It will be interesting to use for the production an electrolysis process, especially in the proposed new plant where the electrolysis process is connected with the process to get the electrical energy from byproducts of electrolysis (i.e. hydrogen and oxygen) in the fuel cell. It seems to be more efficient. The possibility to get butanol from ethanol gives a very good perspective for the use of ethanol from today's overproduction and moreover without the essential change of infrastructure.

The paper presents the results of on-road exhaust emission tests of passenger car fitted with diesel engine, and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). Under such conditions the author could determine the actual vehicle emissions. The tests were performed on a road portion of a fifty kilometres or so - these tests provide information on the on-road emissions and are a basis for their ecological evaluation. For the measurement of the exhaust emissions the authors used a portable exhaust emissions analyzer SEMTECH DS by Sensors Inc. The analyzer measured the concentration of the exhaust components at the same time measuring the exhaust mass flow. The measurements of the particulate matter (mass) were done with the use of particle analyzer by AVL. The obtained data were used to calculate the relations that characterize the influence of the dynamic engine parameters on the exhaust emissions. These properties were taken into account indirectly using the whole range of speeds and accelerations of the vehicle (engine speeds and loads of the engine) for the preparation of the matrices of the emissions rate. The used data were averaged within individual speed and acceleration ranges thus obtaining the characteristics of the share of operation in individual ranges and the characteristics of the emission matrices of the individual emission components. The above results served for defining of the emission level indicator of the vehicles that can be used for classification of vehicle fleet in terms of their emission level.

There has been increasing interest in recent years in the use of biodiesel as a substitute for petroleum-based diesel fuel. Fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) in a pure form are applied as a biodiesel B100 or as blends with diesel fuels named as the B10 biodiesel, the B20 biodiesel etc. FAME is susceptible to oxidation and to changes of other essential parameters during aging processes, which have an essential influence the NOx emission. Change of biodiesel parameters results in deterioration of fuel working properties and in increase of the NOx emission level. The increased NOx emission level is accompanied with high viscosity. Experiments with the PDPA laser-equipment showed that high content of biodiesel in a fuel increases the Sauter Mean Diameter (D32) of a fuel spray. The Sauter Mean Diameter increases with time of the aging process of biodiesel, what additionally can unfavourably influence the level of emission of exhaust gases. The research results of samples of aging processes of Rapeseed Methyl Ester (RME) accomplishing requirements of the EN 14214 European Biodiesel Standard, diesel fuel accomplishing requirements of the EN 590 (for based diesel fuel and blends of based diesel fuel and RME containing 1%, 5%, and 20% RME) are presented in the paper. Determination of influence of the fuel properties and the aging process on the acid number, kinematic viscosity, cloud point, cold filter plugging point, and pour point of fuel samples was an aim of performed research, as well the aging RME effect on elastomers comparatively with fresh RME. The process of fuel samples aging was enforced by the daylight (sun) effect, air, the elevated temperature and water. Fuel samples were aged in laboratory conditions during 15 and 60 weeks. Then the changes of fuels properties with relation to the same properties in initial conditions were determined. The water presence intensifles the process of the RME aging, especially in longer contact. An essential novel aspect of the paper is a relation determined between changes of biodiesel properties during aging and the NOx emission level that is connected mostly with increased viscosity. Rise of viscosity increases size of droplets of spray ed fuel, which results in increased emission level. Prevention of viscosity changes is an efficient way of the NOx emission decrease.

The emulsion is a mixture of two or more insoluble liquids. Microemulsion is the emulsion with particles dimension in a range of one micrometer and smaller. Such a microemulsion of water and diesel fuel will create a novel quality and allows one to simultaneously achieve environmental and economic effects, as well as eliminate the adverse impact of normal emulsions, or adverse effects of water injection into the engine intake system or directly into the combustion chamber, as well as the sequential injection of water directly into the combustion chamber. Application of microemulsion of water and diesel to fuel diesel engine positively affects the combustion process through the catalytic impact of microparticles of water and to improve the process of preparation of the microemulsion injection into the combustion chamber as a result of water microparticles microexplosions. This article presents the investigation results of an internal combustion engine fuelled by an emulsion of water and diesel fuel and also fuelled by emulsion of FAME and water. It therefore seems appropriate to a strong increase in the degree of dispersion of water droplets in the emulsion by applying the methods to obtain the size of water droplets on nanometric range. This should dramatically improve both the stability of emulsion and its influence on the chemical effects of combustion in diesel engine. The performed analysis and investigation is the first stage of work, which is aimed to reduce emissions of PM and NOx simultaneously. It seems that the simultaneous reduction in emissions is possible through the usage of a stable emulsion, i.e. water-fuel microemulsion.

On the basis of the internal heat balance of CI engine with direct fuel injection, the quantity of heat transported during the combustion process from the combustion zone was determined. The real indicator diagrams are the bases for determination of the heat release Characteristics during the combustion process and making up of the internal heat balance. These diagrams were worked out for the engine fuelled with diesel oil for three sets of the injection timing and for work of the engine according to the full load engine Characteristics, and the load Characteristics taken at the engine speedb for the maximum engine torque. Tests with the three different injection timing were carried out. Tests with the load characteristics of the compression-igniting engine for five values of the power were carried out. The pressure in the cylinder of the engine during combustion process was recorded by means of liąuid cooled a piezo-electric quartz sensor with a load amplifier. Characteristics of heat release depended on the composition, temperature and the mol quantity of the working charge in the cylinder during the combustion process. Characteristics of the heat release were determined with the use of the novel calculation program. The program was worked out by authors at the assumption that the process of complete combustion was finished at the moment of the opening of the engine exhaust valve. For purpose of simplification calculation of the quantity of heat lost into the cooling system, the radiation, dissociation and incomplete combustion, were assumed to change during the combustion process in a linear way.

The paper presents methods for processing and analysis of in-cylinder pressure course in the combustion chamber of marine engines. In literature are described determinate methods ofmean indicator pressure from closed diagrams, with are but rarely recorded than developed diagrams. There have been showed on limitations occurrence at measurements fast-changed pressures of marine diesel engines in operating conditions and measuring errors the attendants. Mean indicated pressure determined from the indicated timing or angular pressure courses in the cylinders is still a reliable diagnostic symptom. The paper presents too the results of experimental measurement of in-cylinder pressure signals, medium speed marine engines with application resistive sensor and using the photo-optical sensor of crankshaft position, and without the marker position of the crankshaft. Not always possible to altach the marker for the position of the crankshaft, and even there is no way of stopping the engine when you need to diagnose it. The top dead centre of the piston can be determined then analytically. The work developed a method of determining the mean indicated pressure of the developed indicator diagrams. Based on calculations ofmean indicator pressure made many of diagnosis of the medium speed marine diesel engines in the operating conditions.

Opis:
Paper presents schematic description of the research covering production mechanism of Fatty Acid Ethyl Esters (FAEE) from waste vegetable and animal fats, which are creating a base for multi-component fuel BIOXDIESEL as well as results of physical, chemical analysis and results of engine and vehicles tests. The characteristic of wasted material used for production of fatty acid ethyl esters is showed. Cybernetic chain of biofuel BIOXDIESEL, system analysis and structure and scheme of the chemical reaction of Ethanol esterification of fatty acids is presented. Basic properties of exemplary BIOXDIESEL and Diesel fuel were compared. Caloric values of investigated BIOXDIESELS are shown. Mixtures of the BIOXDIESEL fuels with various composition have been tested and compared with Diesel fuel during engine tests on the engine test bench, vehicle test dyno and drive tests. The diesel engines of Fiat 1.3 Multijet, Mercedes300D, Landrover and ADCR compression ignition engine were tested with biofuels. Functional schema of the measurement set up is described. Cyclodynes obtained during testing of the ADCR engine fuelled with Diesel and BIOXDIESEL fuels with their centres of gravity are presented. Obtained and described results in the form of tables and graphs can be summarized with conclusions, that the performance of engines fuelled with BIOX-DIESELS is similar to engines fuelled with Diesel fuel.

A new approach is needed to test particle filters for retrofitting Diesel engines. Considering the toxicity of the particles as also the physical and chemical attributes of particle filters, the optimal scheme is to test the components themselves independent of the deployment. That scheme ensures the highest effectiveness with least effort. It also enables evaluation of worst-case situations and assesses the hazards of secondary emissions. The Swiss standard SNR 277 205, which mandates the VERT test procedure, is a first step in that direction. Occupational health specialists have studied the toxicity of ultraflne particles for more than 100 years. Extremely toxic are the particles intruding into the lung. Larger particles, which are always naturally present, are intercepted in the upper respiratory paths. The body then expels these larger particles rapidly via the mucus and cilia. The new manmade particles less-than l mi m, however massively intrude into the fine pulmonary alveoli, which do not have the cleansing mechanism. The targeted efficiencies for evaluating modern filters are evident from the progress achieved. Many filters have filtration rates exceeding 99.9%, albeit the directives [4] only require 97%.

W artykule przedstawiony jest opis silnika pomocniczego LEYLAND typu SW400 zainstalowanego na stanowisku laboratoryjnym w Akademii Marynarki Wojennej. Dokonano analizy możliwości realizacji pomiarów parametrów gazodynamicznych w kanale spalin wylotowych, przedstawiono możliwości systemu pomiaru i rejestracji parametrów szybkozmiennych MA2005 oraz sposób jego wykorzystania w ocenie stanu technicznego przestrzeni roboczych silnika. Dalszą część artykułu stanowią wyniki badań wstępnych prowadzonych na silnikach typu SW400.
The paper presents a description of auxiliary engines SW400 installed in the laboratory of Polish Naval Academy, an analysis of possibility to measure gas dynamical parameters of an exhaust in a discharge channel, capabilities of the system to measure and register fast changing parameters MA2005 and the way to use the system to estimate the technical condition of engine working spaces area. It also includes the results of preliminary investigations carried out on engine SW400.

Particulate matter (PM) and gaseous compounds (SO2, NOx, VOC) emitted by diesel engines causes serious global environmental problems and health impact. Despite numerous evidences about the harmfulness of diesel particles, the PM emission by diesel engines used by ships, cars, agricultural machines, or power generators is still unregulated, and the efficient removal of PM from diesel exhausts is still the major technological challenge. In order to comply with the International Maritime Organization regulation, the NOx emission is reduced by using selected catalytic reactor, and sulphur oxide emission has been reduced by using fuels of low sulphur content. However, both of those measures cannot be used for the reduction of PM emission produced during combustion of marine fuels. The lack of appropriate regulations results from insufficiently developed technology, which could remove those particles from exhaust gases. Conventional scrubbers currently available on the market remove only sulphur oxide with required collection efficiency, but the collection efficiency for PM2.5 is below 50%. The article discusses the technical means used for the removal of PM from marine diesel engines via applying electrohydrodynamic methods, in particular electrostatic agglomeration, as a method of nanoparticles coagulation to larger agglomerates, which could operate in two-stage electrostatic precipitation systems, and electrostatic scrubbers, which remove particles by electrically charged water droplets. The experimental results were obtained for a 2-stroke 73 kW diesel engine fuelled with marine gas oil (MGO). The agglomerator allowed increasing the collection efficiency from diesel exhausts for PM2.5 particles by about 12%, compared to electrostatic precipitator operating without agglomerator, and the total mass collection efficiency was above 74%. The collection efficiency of electrostatic scrubber was higher than 95wt.%. The advantage of using the electrostatic scrubber is that it can also reduce the SO2 emission by more than 90%, when HFO is used.

As the time is passing, lubricating oil in marine engine lubricating oil system loses its quality because of oil deterioration process. Lubricating oil quality influences the wear of tribological system elements. The total base number (TBN) is one of the most important oil quality properties. During operation of diesel engines the TBN decreases as alkaline additives are exhausted mainly through neutralization offuel burning acid products. So as to improve lubricating oil properties an engineer uses some maintenance methods. One of these methods is refilling process. The paper presents theoretical researches of total base number changes modelling at various lubricating oil refilling methods. Theoretical model of oil-deterioration process was worked out on the basis ofmass balance equation of total base number. The method of sofaing the problem, structural model of experimental unit, total base number change in case of constant refilling process, calculating example, total base number changes in PIELSTICK12PC2-5V engine oil versus parameter d, percentage changes of total base number in PIELSTICK 12PC2-5V engine oil versus parameter d are presented in the paper.

Modern way of machines' exploitation, due to their high level of constructional complication, requires certain level of supervising. That supervising is generally reduced to detection of pre-failure states and evaluation of machines’ single elements or components condition. In the frame of development of the research capacity of the Mechanical Faculty of Maritime Academy in Gdynia, has been developed the Exploitation Decision Aid System for marine engines exploitation, based on existing test bed with the marine diesel engine Sulzer AL 25/30. Modernization of the engine, significantly extended research and measurement capacity, what has resulted with improvement of quality, extension of the span, and acceleration of carried out research and development works in the domain of safety of exploitation and diagnostics of marine power plants. Above stated investments enables also an extension of the range of research and expertise related to engines' failures and exhaust gases emission pollution, in relation to broad spectrum of implemented fuels. The goal has been achieved in the way of the test equipment modernization including: effective pressure sensors, high pressure fuel sensors, monitoring and visualization of the engine systems' parameters, electronic indictors adopted to continuous operation at all cylinders in the same time, and high class decision aid computer equipment.

Owing to additives, the lubricating oils are characterized by constantly improving properties. Nevertheless, in extreme hard working conditions of the tribological systems (high pressures, velocities and temperatures, temporary lubricating lack during starting) the machine elements are not secured enough. In connection with the above mentioned the idea to introduce the additional substance - operating preparation into tribological systems (with the lubricating oils) was put forward. Now the chemical interaction preparations have the widest application. These preparations are characterized by big molecular weight and high thermal and chemical stability. Besides filtering, lubricating oils used in marine engines are purified. In connection with it the question arises if the operating preparations (which have higher density then oils and water) are able to join permanently with lubricating oil in order not to separate in the purifying process and what influence they have on lubricating oil ability to separate the water. The lubricating oil with operating preparation MOTOR LIFE PROFFESIONAL and water purifying research were presented in the article so as to answer the above questions. The test stand consisted of two WESTFALIA purifiers. One of these purifiers was working in UNITROL, the other in SECUTROL system. In the research the UNITROL system purifier was used. The research object was MARINOL RG 1240 lubricating oil used in marine diesel engines.

The piston engine irregularity is a consequence of the uneven power supply from the engine units. As such, it contains valuable information about engines units working process. Unfortunately, it is strongly influenced by torsional vibration, resonance, and propeller behaviour. In order to better understand the speed irregularity phenomena the instantaneous speed was recorded and its characteristic against engine mean speed was developed. Some statistical parameters: standard error and deviation as well as variance were determined. The results were compared with propulsion plant torsional vibration. The presented results show that the irregularity of the long stroke engine's speed is strongly influenced by torsional vibration phenomena. The analyzed engine has a bared speed range 37-43 rpm. Exactly around that range, the speed irregularity reaches its maximum values of 18% of mean speed. The analysis can be considered as qualitative look into the phenomena. However even based on the presented analysis one can observe some practical inferences. The common type of electronic indicators is used to simplify the measurement by assuming that the shaft speed is equal in between the pickup pulses. In order to increase the accuracy of the indicated power determination the use of such instrument should be avoided in the speed range, which is a multiple number of the barred speed. Due to the fact that the shaft speed is irregular especially in the ranges where torsional resonance may occur the piston positioning (for example for TDC determination) purpose procedure should take it into account.

The internal combustion engine is considered as one of the main sources for air pollution due to hydrocarbon fuel combustion. The increased land transport usage requires improvement of the engine efficiency and combustion process technology to reduce the engine emissions. A turbocharged engine and the gaseous fuel replacement are the green tools proposed by researchers to enhance fuel saving and emissions reduction. In this paper, both methods were investigated. The methane is a preferred gaseous fuel due to its lower carbon to hydrogen ratio, resulting in lesser HC and CO emissions. In this paper, a turbocharged compression ignition engine with methane/diesel dual fuel is simulated using professional GT-power code to investigate the effect of methane percentage in mixture on the engine performance and emissions. A turbocharged 6 cylinders compression ignition engine has been built and investigated. During the simulation, the methane/diesel ratios were varied from pure diesel with zero percent methane to 90% methane concentration by mass with 10% increment every run. The results show that the engine brake power and specific fuel consumption increased while the thermal efficiency decreased for lower CH4 concentration. For higher CH4 percentage, the brake power and thermal efficiency increased while specific fuel consumption decreased. Moreover, NO emission has 35% reduction compared to neat diesel fuel when 50% of methane was added to the mixture. Conversely, the CO and HC concentration increased when the methane ratio is less than 50% compared to neat diesel combustion. In general, the engine efficiency improved when methane was added to diesel fuel in compression ignition engine with turbocharger boost, resulting in lesser emissions and cleaner environment.

This paper describes the introduced results of researches of undesirable events at one shipowner for a period of twelve years. The study included mostly merchant vessels bulk carriers and their significant objects. The ships were decomposed on functional systems and elements also divided them into of the navigation and machinery part. There was carried out a quantitative and economics analysis. In the economic analysis have been exchange rates accounted. Attempted classification of the causes of the event and its participation in material losses incurred. These events are also a threat to human life and health as well as the natural environment. One showed on methods and means of diagnostics as manner of limitation their sizes and results. The results should be useful in the design of diagnostic experiments to select the objects that should be subject monitored. The larges losses of adverse events were initiated in the functional systems: navigation, main drive and cargo. The most often adverse events are collisions. The most expensive vessel objects in the engine room proved to be reciprocating internal combustion engines for main propulsion and auxiliary. The investigations were conducted for all types of reciprocating internal combustion engines mounted on the test vessels. Combustion engines were operated under different external and internal conditions and were feed distillate and residual fuel oils.

Cavitation erosion of cylinder liner seriously affects the operational reliability and service life of heavy-duty diesel engines. The accuracy of the modeling-based cavitation risk evaluation is limited by the unclear correspondence between cylinder liner vibration and coolant cavitation. This report is intended to investigate the correspondence between cylinder liner vibration and coolant pressure by combining vibration cavitation test, pressure gradient calculation, and visualization observation. The cavitation risk of the cylinder liner under the piston slap is quantitatively analyzed based on a nonlinear structural dynamics model that incorporates the piston-cylinder liner nonlinear collision, piston thermal deformation, and preload of cylinder head. The results show that the occurrence of cavitation will cause a nonlinear relationship between the cylinder liner acceleration and the coolant pressure. The engine under study has a high risk of cavitation when the cylinder liner acceleration exceeds 1189 m/s2. The difference in cavitation risk for each cylinder is related to the structural modal characteristics of the crankcase. In addition, the effect of piston-liner clearance and piston pin offset on the cavitation risk is investigated based on the dynamics model.

The paper presents comparative analysis of energetic possibilities of different ships with close parameters of displacement and operational ailing range, for selected type of main engine. Analysis is related to three types of ships, i.e. bulk carrier, tanker and container ship, with assumed displacement at level of 120 000DWT and typical for that ships sailing speed. The analysis concerns shipping route from Gdynia to Shanghai. First step of conducted analysis was based on elaboration of the list of contemporary similar ships for every class, their general dimensions, dimensional coefficients, and subsequently evaluation of hulls resistances using Holtrop – Mennen Method necessary for calculation of propulsive power, main engines’ selection, most convenient for every type of ship and calculation of trips durations and fuel consumptions. All calculations were done assuming typical cruising speed for considered types of ships, it means 25 knots for container ships and 15 knots for tankers and bulkers. Results of carried out calculations lets come to the conclusion that total time of trip duration of container ship is 1.5 times shorter and fuel consumption is 2.5 times higher comparing with tankers and bulk carriers going on the same trip. Taking under consideration constantly growing prices of heavy oil, that situation is inconvenient from economical point of view. Above facts explains general trend to reduce speed of container ships presented by almost all shipping companies. The way of speed’s reduction is decreasing of continuous power rate of main engine, what is related to necessity of blinding or dismounting some numbers of turbochargers. Hypothetic example of such operation and its impact at operational properties were analysed, and results showed, that exploitation parameters of the container ship begun closer to bulk carriers and tankers but could not achieve proper level of efficacy due to not optimal hull shape and engine characteristic.

Opis:
Determination of the internal combustion piston engine 's indicated power is a complex task. A number of difficulties lead to lots of solutions utilized to increase the accuracy of the result. This paper reports on the experiments concerned with a four stroke engine's piston dynamic position determination. Although the paper is mostly concerned with the piston's TDC definition, the experimental methodology can be utilized in the entire piston movement determination. A specially developed measuring assembly and its working principle utilized in the experiment have been presented too. It allows the acquiring of a set of time-position coordinates. Based on the coordinates, the mathematical algorithm for dynamic piston positioning can be developed. As the piston movement was being observed from the crankcase side, the methodology proved to be relatively cheap and easier for installation, compared to proximity sensors installed in the cylinder head. The advantage of optical sensors and light pipes being used was reduction of the explosion risk in oil mist environment inside the crank case.

W ramach artykułu przestawiono analizy statystyczne rodzajów napraw realizowanych w analizowanej firmie obejmujące okres pięciu lat. Analiza jest oparta na bazie danych (SQL), w której zapisywane są wszystkie informacje dotyczące realizowanych zleceń. W ramach analiz określono strukturę zbioru naprawianych pojazdów oraz przeprowadzono analizę najczęstszych usterek pojazdów.
The article presents a statistical analysis of car repair data gathered by an examined company over five-year time interval. It is based on a SQL database which contains information about all realized orders. The analysis defines the structure of the set of repaired car makes and additionally to find the most frequent vehicle defects.

Standards linked with the environmental protection and vehicles are increasingly restrictive. EURO VI standard and regulations define the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold. Because of that, Selective Catalyst Reduction systems are used in a new vehicles with the heavy-duty type engines. This paper presents a study of the SCR system in public transport vehicles of the Municipal Transport Company (MPK) in Lublin, Poland. The tests were performed to study the power consumption of the SCR (the urea applicator into the catalyst) and calculate the results per unit of fuel. The amount of fuel for the Solaris Trollino 12 trolleybus was estimated and the energy demand found was of the order of 343 kWh/year. This gives low diesel fuel consumption, i.e. only 34.3 litres per year. The study also shows a graph of the daily demand of energy by the SCR system in public transport vehicles.

W artykule przedstawiono stanowisko oraz przykładowe wyniki badań wizualizacyjnych przebiegu procesu wtrysku wybranych paliw do silników o ZS. Stanowisko to zbudowano w oparciu o stół probierczy firmy Bosch EPS-815 ( z którego zaadoptowany został napęd pompy wysokociśnieniowej) oraz komorę wizualizacyjną o stałej objętości umożliwiającą realizację procesu rozpylenia paliwa. Rejestracji rozwoju strugi paliwa realizowano przy użyciu systemu AVL VisioScope.
The article presents the test stand and sample visualization results of injection process for selected fuels used in diesel engines. The test stand was built based on the Bosch EPS-815 test bench and the constant volume visualization chamber which allows the fuel spraying. From test bench the drive of high-pressure pump was adapted. Using the AVL VisioScope system the spray formation was recorded.

Opis:
Operation of marine diesel engines causes signifi cant emission of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. It was noticed worldwide and the regulations concerning harmful emissions were introduced. There were several solutions elaborated; however, emission control for both SOx and NOx requires two distinctive processes realized in separated devices, which is problematic due to limited space on ship board and high overall costs. Therefore, the electron beam flue gas treatment (EBFGT) process was adopted to ensure the abatement of the problem of marine diesel off-gases. This novel solution combines two main processes: fi rst the fl ue gas is irradiated with electron beam where NO and SO2 are oxidized; the second stage is wet scrubbing to remove both pollutants with high efficiency. Laboratory tests showed that this process could be effectively applied to remove SO2 and NOx from diesel engine off-gases. Different compositions of absorbing solution with three different oxidants (NaClO, NaClO2 and NaClO3) were tested. The highest NOx removal efficiency (>96%) was obtained when seawater-NaClO2-NaOH was used as scrubber solution at 10.9 kGy dose. The process was further tested in real maritime conditions at Riga shipyard, Latvia. More than 45% NOx was removed at a 5.5 kGy dose, corresponding to 4800 Nm3 /h off-gases arising from ship emission. The operation of the plant was the first case of examination of the hybrid electron beam technology in real conditions. Taking into account the experiment conditions, good agreement was obtained with laboratory tests. The results obtained in Riga shipyard provided valuable information for the application of this technology for control of large cargo ship emission.

The article presents an innovative method of evaluating technical condition of marine diesel engines driving electric power generator. The presented method is based on measurements of the phase-to-phase voltage of the synchronous generator and on measurements of the acceleration of the injector needle. The basis for the method is an assumption that the shapes of the waveforms of the phase-to-phase voltage of the generator include information on fluctuations of the angular velocity of the engine crankshaft. Consequently, these fluctuations depend directly on the course of the working process occurring in the engine cylinders. The vibrating signal is used to synchronize the shapes of the voltage waveforms with the engine working process.
W artykule przedstawiono nowatorską metodę oceny stanu technicznego okrętowych tłokowych silników spalinowych o zapłonie samoczynnym napędzających prądnice. Prezentowana metoda bazuje na pomiarach napięcia międzyfazowego prądnicy synchronicznej oraz na pomiarze przyspieszeń iglicy wtryskiwacza. Podstawą metody jest założenie, że przebiegi napięcia międzyfazowego prądnicy zawierają informację o fluktuacjach prędkości kątowej wału korbowego silnika. Natomiast fluktuacje te zależą bezpośrednio od przebiegu procesu roboczego realizowanego w cylindrach silnika. Sygnał drganiowy wykorzystywany jest do synchronizacji przebiegów napięcia z cyklem roboczym silnika.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wybranego obiektu, elementów i węzłów tribologicznych w aspekcie procesów zużycia. Obiektami badań były średnio-obrotowe silniki produkowane na licencji firmy Sulzer. Wśród badanych typów silników ten zasilany paliwami pozostałościowymi podlegał intensywnemu zużyciu. Paliwa te zawierają znaczne ilości siarki, wody oraz odznaczają się dużą liczbą Conradsona. Badania zużycia prowadzono w naturalnych warunkach eksploatacji. Opisano także warunki, w których eksploatowane były badane silniki, gdzie występowały często niesprzyjające warunki tropikalne. Stwierdzono istotne zużycie czopów wału korbowego, tulei cylindrowych, tłoków i głowic. Intensywne zużycie wynika z konstrukcji silnika, w którym system smarowania tłoków i tulei oraz łożysk wału korbowego nie jest rozdzielony. Badania zużycia prowadzono głównie z zastosowaniem biernej obserwacji, pomiarów geometrycznych, analizy obrazów oraz z zastosowaniem biernych i bierno-czynnych eksperymentów diagnostycznych. Problemem w badanych silnikach oprócz intensywnego zużycia materiałów metalowych było tworzenie się osadów. Celem badań była również identyfikacja rodzajów zużycia.
The paper presents the results of the selected object, the elements and of tribological systems in the aspect of wear processes. The objects of research were medium speed engines produced under license from Sulzer. Among the tested objects were the types of engines powered by residual fuels subject to intensive wear. These fuels contain significant amounts of sulphur and water and have a large number of Conradson carbon residue. The wear investigations were performed under natural conditions. The paper also describes the conditions under which the test engines operate, which are often unfavourable tropical conditions. A significant wear of crank pins, cylinder liners, pistons, and cylinder heads were indicated. Intensive wear results from engine design, in which the lubrication system of pistons and sleeves and bearings of the crankshaft is the same. The wear investigations were carried out by applying passive observation, geometrical measurements, and analysis of images, and with applying passive and passive-active diagnostic experiments. The inspected engines showed intensive wear of metal materials and the formation of deposits. An identification of types of the wear was also a purpose of the research.

W Katedrze Silników Spalinowych i Pojazdów Akademii Techniczno-Humanistycznej w Bielsku-Białej opracowano i wykonano sterownik do badań silników o zapłonie samoczynnym wyposażonych w układy zasilania typu Common Rail. W niniejszej publikacji przedstawiono opis sterownika oraz na przykładzie menu jego sposób działania i możliwości badawcze. Sterownik umożliwia na pracującym silniku zmianę kąta wyprzedzenia i ciśnienia wtrysku, wielkości dawki i jej podział na pięć dawek częściowych o dowolnym profilu wtrysku. Umożliwia to prowadzenie badań związanych z analizą i optymalizacją procesu spalania w silniku. W publikacji przedstawiono również wybrane algorytmy sterowania silnika. W oparciu o doświadczenia zdobywane na hamowni silnikowej sterownik ten jest w dalszym ciągu rozwijany w zakresie optymalizacji procedur strategicznych, operacyjnych i regulacyjnych, których celem jest wdrożenie elektronicznego układu sterującego dla zastosowań trakcyjnych.
In the Chair of Internal Combustion Engines and Vehicles of the Technical University in Bielsko-Biała the programmer for examina-tions Diesel engines equipped with Common-Rail was made. It is presented in the paper. Operation and options of the controller are showed on the example of the menu. Executed and put into practice controller of the system Common-Rail makes it possible to examine and analyse the combustion process in the engine. The aim of the tests there is the change of the character of the dose of the injection and other parameters of the injection. Some algorithms of the control of the engine speed were also restated. Basing on this experience the engine test bench controller has been developed, allowing the optimization of strategy, operation and regulating procedures. Next the optimal solution of the electronic steering setup could be put into practice also for traction applications. Device parameters and features of the driver are shown on the example of the menu.

Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH certyfikował w maju 2002 roku lotniczy silnik Diesla Centurion 1.7 w Europie przez EASA, a w rok później przez FAA w USA. Liczba użytkowanych silników Diesla zasilanych paliwem lotniczym Jet Al, trakcyjnym paliwem dieslowskim i syntetycznymi biopaliwami lotniczymi wzrasta. Wprowadzono po wielu perturbacjach do roku 2012 około 3500 silników Diesla tej firmy. Właściwości nowoczesnego silnika Diesla w stosunku do klasycznego benzynowego silnika lotniczego Otto oraz jego certyfikacja zmieniły zasadniczo sytuację na rynku napędów w lotnictwie zmierzających do zastosowania jednego paliwa dla lotnictwa komercyjnego, General Aviation oraz bujnie rozwijającego się lotnictwa bezpilotowego (UAV). Autor dokonuje przeglądu dynamicznie zmieniającej się sytuacji na rynku napędów i paliw lotniczych.
The Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH certified in May 2002 Air Centurion 1.7 Diesel engine in Europe by EASA, and a year later in the United States by the FAA. The number of exploited Diesel engines fueled by Jet Al, Diesel fuel and synthetic biofuels is increasing. After many perturbations about 3,500 Diesels were introduced till year 2012.The characteristics of modern Diesel compared to gasoline regular aircraft Otto engine and its certification considerably changed the market situation in aviation propulsion oriented to use one type of fuel for commercial aviation, General Aviation and vigorously developing unmanned aviation (UAV). The author reviews the current rapidly changing situation on the market of aviation propulsion and aviation fuels.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań siły tarcia między iglicą a korpusem rozpylaczy silników okrętowych. Badano wykonane ze stali stopowej rozpylacze tłokowych silników spalinowych zasilanych olejem napędowym lub paliwem pozostałościowym. Do badań wybrano rozpylacze spośród eksploatowanych w naturalnych warunkach, w których stwierdzono stan niezdatności lub wymieniono je profilaktycznie. Badano rozpylacze przy obecności paliwa lub oleju o zbliżonych własnościach, jak również wykonano pomiary czasów wysuwania się iglic z korpusów rozpylaczy dla stopniowanych ich położeń w płaszczyznach względem osi podłużnej w korpusie rozpylacza. Wykonano pomiary geometryczne par precyzyjnych i badano wpływ wymiarów oraz błędów kształtu i położenia części prowadzących na wartości sił tarcia. Badano wpływ położenia kątowego iglicy względem korpusu rozpylacza i mierzono również luz średnicowy między korpusem a iglicą rozpylacza oraz badano jego wpływ na wartość maksymalnej siły tarcia. Badania siły tarcia przeprowadzono na dwóch stanowiskach, w zależności od jej wartości. Pierwsze z nich wykonane było we własnym zakresie do wyznaczania maksymalnej siły tarcia z wykorzystaniem obciążania siłami ciężkości, a drugie stanowisko przeznaczone było do badań wytrzymałości próbek na rozciąganie. Na wartość maksymalnej siły tarcia między korpusem i iglicą rozpylacza ma wpływ stan współpracujących powierzchni oraz ich wzajemne usytuowanie, zanieczyszczenia itp. Przeprowadzone badania miały na celu wyznaczenie składowej siły tarcia i/lub czasu wysuwania się iglicy w zależności od kąta obrotu iglicy w korpusie rozpylacza, od luzu, rodzaju zastosowanych środków smarowych oraz masy iglicy.
This article presents the results of the friction force between the needle and the nozzle body of marine diesel engines. Injectors made of the alloy steel of piston internal combustion engines fed with diesel oil or residual fuel were investigated. Injector nozzles from among the jets operated in natural conditions in which was found the state of unfitness or replaced preventively are investigated. Nozzles were tested in the presence of fuel oil or oil with similar properties, as well as measurements of ejection time choking the nozzle at different angles of the rotation respect to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle needle in the body. Geometrical measurements were made of precision pairs to investigate the effect of the dimensions and shape and location errors on the values of friction forces. The influence of the angular position of the needle tip relative to the body are investigated, and precise measurements of the diameter clearance between the frictional couple were taken to study its effect on the value of the maximum friction force. The research of the frictional forces was carried at two test stands, depending on its value. The first test stand was designed by the author for appointing the maximum using gravitational loading, and the second stand was intended to research the durability of samples to stretching. The value of the maximum force of friction between the body and the needle tip is influenced by the condition of mating surfaces and their mutual positioning, pollution, etc. The research aimed to determine the component of friction force and/or the time of the withdraw of the needle depending on the angle of the turnover of the needle in the nozzle body, clearance, kind, applied medium and masses of the needle.

Charakterystyka TD (Time Density), opracowana dla napędów spalinowych eksploatowanych w kopalniach węgla kamiennego, pozwala na sklasyfikowanie silnika i określenie reprezentatywnego cyklu badawczego oraz wagi poszczególnych faz tego cyklu. W artykule przedstawiono metodę sporządzania charakterystyk gęstości czasowej TD maszyn z silnikiem spalinowym oraz metody pośredniego i bezpośredniego określenia momentu obrotowego niezbędnego do sporządzenia charakterystyki TD.
Time Density Characteristics (TD), developed for diesel engines operating in hard coal mines enables classification of engine and determining the representative testing cycle and weight of each phase of the cycle. The method for preparation of TD characteristics of diesel engines as well as indirect or direct determination of torque indispensable for development of TD characteristics, is presented.

Konieczność spełnienia norm emisji spalin przy jednoczesnym wzroście kosztów materiałów eksploatacyjnych, gdzie największą ich część stanowi koszt paliwa, zmuszają do opracowywania nowych rozwiązań z przeznaczeniem do zastosowania w konstruowaniu silników spalinowych. W artykule przedstawiono obecne oraz przyszłościowe rozwiązania stosowane konstrukcjach silników motoryzacyjnych. Dotyczą one procesu sterowania procesem spalania oraz konstrukcji wysokociśnieniowych układów wtryskowych.
Emissions standards and higher costs of consumables materials where the greatest part is fuel cost are forcing to develop new solutions to improve the construction of internal combustion engines. The paper overviews the current and future solutions used in automotive engine designs. They are related to the control of combustion and a design process of high-pressure injection systems.

Przedstawiono eksperymentalne możliwości obserwacji ruchu tłoka poprzez skrzynię korbową silnika okrętowego. Wyznaczono charakterystyczne punkty położenia tłoka w czasie. opracowano metodę estymacji wystąpienia GMP tłoka na podstawie jego obserwowanych położeń. Zaproponowano model matematyczny umożliwiający szacowanie położenia dynamicznego GMP tłoka na podstawie obserwacji jego ruchu. Wykazano występowanie różnicy pomiędzy wystąpieniem GMP termodynamicznym, a GMP dynamicznym.
The experimental possibility of piston movement observation through the crankcase has been presented. The characteristic piston positioning points in the time domain have been determined. The piston TDC estimation methodology based on observed positioning points has been developed. A mathematic model for piston TDC estimation has been proposed. The difference between thermodynamic and dynamic TDC has been detected and presented.

The investigations were concentrated on axially symmetrical arrangements, which permit more convenient formation of electrostatic field and better practicability. The description of construction and results of preliminary investigations of axially symmetrical arrangement was presented in "Researches of model plasma reactor for purify Diesel exhaust gas of particulates" published in Journal of KONES 2006. In the publication the attention was drawn to the fundamental problems requiring the solution, and namely: - The quick coating of electrodes insulators with soot, which took effect of leakance of corona discharge current and fading away of discharge, - Somewhat low, over a dozen-percentage effectiveness of cleaning process in comparison with previously studied flat arrangement, which effectiveness came up to 40 %. Subsequent investigations were concentrated on capturing of above-mentioned difficulties. Some modified variants of device were prepared. The number of electrodes was limited from three to only one, which was enclosed with insulator serving as the cardinal bracket of blades assembly generating corona discharge and the deflecting electrode. This new arrangement permitted examination of several variants of device described in present publication, which in consequence constrained searching of methods of soot settlement limitation to two final solutions: blowing-in of air stream in place of soot settlement (described in present publication) as well as burning the soot sediment on artificially warmed surface of insulator (in preparation). In order to improve the cleaning effectiveness of the system, the empirical tests of different variants of discharge area formation are carrying out with simultaneously measurement of discharge current, being the measure of its intensity. The subjects of comparison were among other things the mesh of thin wires and the aggregate of linear blades. Applying of filter modules in form of concentric meshes of different diameter of net mesh caused the improvement of cleaning effectiveness to over 40 %.
W badaniach skoncentrowano się na układach osiowo-symetrycznych, które pozwalają na dogodniejsze kształtowanie pola elektrostatycznego i stwarzają lepsze możliwości wykonawcze. Opis konstrukcji i wyniki wstępnych badań układu osiowo-symetrycznego opisano w publikacji zamieszczonej w "Journal of KONES 2006"[1]. W publikacji tej zwrócono uwagę na zasadnicze problemy wymagające rozwiązania, a mianowicie: - szybkie pokrywanie się izolatorów elektrod sadzą, co skutkowało upływnością prądu wyładowań koronowych i zanikiem tych wyładowań, - niską kilkunasto-procentową skuteczność oczyszczania urządzenia w porównaniu z uprzednio badanym układem płaskim, którym skuteczność ta wynosiła ok. 40 %. W dalszych badaniach skoncentrowano się na opanowaniu powyższych trudności. Wykonano zmodyfikowane warianty urządzenia, w którym ograniczono liczbę elektrod z trzech do jednej, otoczonej izolatorem, wykonanym jako główny wspornik zespołu ostrzy generujących wyładowania koronowe i elektrody odchylającej. Pozwoliło to na przebadanie kilku wariantów urządzenia opisanych w niniejszej publikacji, co w konsekwencji sprowadziło poszukiwania metod ograniczenia osadzania się sadzy do dwóch rozwiązań - z nadmuchem strumienia powietrza w miejsca osadzania się sadzy (opisanym w niniejszej publikacji) oraz z wypalaniem sadzy na sztucznie grzanej powierzchni izolatora (w przygotowaniu). W celu poprawy skuteczności oczyszczania, empirycznym badaniom poddawane są różne warianty kształtowania pola wyładowań koronowych, z pomiarem prądu tych wyładowań jako miary ich intensywności. Badaniom poddano m.in. warianty z siatką cienkich drutów w porównaniu z zespołem ostrzy liniowych. Po zastosowaniu modułu filtrów w postaci koncentrycznych siatek o różnej średnicy oczek uzyskano poprawę skuteczności oczyszczania do ponad 40 %.

The paper presents a diagnostic system for marine diesel engine based on an expert system model. The research relevant to knowledge acquisition for this system was done, knowledge data set was built and general structures of the expert system was proposed. Basic sources of knowledge which can be used for construction of knowledge data set are also identified. The basic knowledge related to the diesel diagnostic was undertaken from experts and diagnostic data base. The paper questionnaire was used to the knowledge acquisition from experts. The basic knowledge related to the marine diesel exploitation was undertaken. The rule induction algorithms was used to knowledge acquisition from data base. During the experiment efficiency of LEM induction algorithms was compared to new MODLEM and EXPLORE algorithms. Training and test data were acquired from experiment on marine engine Sulzer 3AL 25/30.
Artykuł przedstawia system diagnostyczny okrętowego silnika wysokoprężnego oparty na modelu systemu eksperckiego. Przeprowadzono badania odpowiednia dla pozyskania informacji o tym systemie, stworzono zestaw danych oraz zaproponowano struktury ogólne systemu eksperckiego. Zidentyfikowano również podstawowe źródła informacji, które mogą być wykorzystane do budowy zestawu danych wiedzy. Podstawowa wiedza odnosząca się do diagnostyki silników wysokoprężnych została wzięta z eksperckich i diagnostycznych baz danych. Wykorzystano kwestionariusz papierowy w celu uzyskania wiedzy od ekspertów. Uzyskano podstawowe informacje odnoszącą się do eksploatacji silników okrętowych. Zastosowano algorytmy rule induction do uzyskania informacji z bazy danych. Podczas eksperymentu sprawność algorytmów induction LEM została porównana z nowymi algorytmami MODLEM i EXPLORE. Dane szkoleniowe i testowe zostały uzyskane z eksperymentu na silniku okrętowym Sulzer 3AL 25/30.

The paper deals with the problems related to the diagnostics of selected parts of modern Diesel engines. The evolution of mechanical properties of four alloys of Mg-Li-Al system and four composites made on the base of the alloys mentioned above, caused by variation of its composition was presented. The Acoustic Emission (AE) method applied to monitoring of degradation of mechanical properties of the alloys and composites was described. Moreover, the results of the investigation of failures occurring in the injectors of Common Rail Diesel engines performed with the application of AE method were also reported.

The number of vehicles in the world is growing rapidly. Therefore, the global consumption of crude oil is increasing and its natural resources are being depleted. It causes the rise of oil fuel cost. Constantly rising energy prices and emironmental concerns have made energy saving the highest priority for transportation operators. The main goal of vehicles' operation is economy. The fuel consumption of the most popular internal combustion engines depends on various factors, and one of the most important of them is thermal condition. Energy or fuel saving is the main way to reduce operational expenses of vehicles. This paper aims to investigate fuel consumption of 1.9 liter volume direct injection diesel engine and to construct a diagram of the dependence of the amount of smoke in exhaust on the temperature of engine's operation. The temperature was fixed in the engine's crankcase, while the temperature of cooling liquid was measured at four points as well as during the engine's bench testing. Unexpected test results are obtained: when the temperature of exhaust gases rises above 70-75 °C, the amount of smoke increases by a few times. Finally, basic conclusions and recommendations are given.

Opis:
The paper discusses possibilities of increasing the performance parameters of a diesel engine and decreasing the emission of toxic compounds contained in exhaust gases by using preliminary catalytic treatment of biofuel, executed directly in the injector body. In order to enhance the impact of the catalyst on the flowing fuel the author proposes to utilize the phenomenon of turbulization in injector passages. The results of tests on a 359 type engine have shown an improvement of operational parameters and a decrease of toxic emission in exhaust gases.
W artykule przedstawiono możliwości zwiększenia efektywnych parametrów pracy silnika z zapłonem samoczynnym przy jednoczesnym zmniejszeniu poziomu emisji związków toksycznych w gazach wylotowych przy zastosowaniu wstępnej obróbki paliw pochodzenia roślinnego. W tym celu proponuje się zastosowanie wstępnej obróbki - termicznej, katalitycznej i turbulizacyjnej, która odbywa się bezpośrednio w korpusie rozpylaczy paliwowych. Wyniki badań uzyskanych na silniku typu 359 wskazująna poprawę ekonomicznych i ekologicznych parametrów pracy przy zastosowaniu wstępnej obróbki paliwa.

The paper presents elaborated model of marine diesel engine injector as series of functional blocks notation by means rectangles. The each block is contains determinate number of entrances and exits. The some exits values of one block are entrances values of other blocks. The elaborated model takes qualification of changeable values of pressures in working chamber of cylinder and course variation of pressure in closed space of injection pump and injector. It takes an aspect of course of pressure values as working parameter at exit. There have been simulated for different load of engine on pressure course in each space of injection apparatus and in cylinder during working cycle on subordination crank angle. In article have been formulate of mathematical dependence and utilization of experimental dates, with enabled calculation of interest parameters and for indexes for simulated process. The model takes into consideration the properties of the fuel injected, construction parameters of the injection systems and temperature and temperature course of the working medium.
W artykule przedstawiono opracowany model wtryskiwacza okrętowego silnika spalinowego, jako zbioru bloków funkcjonalnych oznaczonych za pomocą prostokątów, z których każdy zawiera określoną liczbę wejść i wyjść. Określone wielkości wyjściowe jednego bloku są wielkościami wejściowymi innego bloku. Opracowany model obejmuje określenie wartości ciśnień zmieniających się w komorze roboczej cylindra i przebiegu zmian ciśnienia w przestrzeniach zamkniętych pompy wtryskowe i wtryskiwacza. Podejmuje on aspekt przebiegu wartości ciśnienia, jako roboczego parametru wyjściowego. Zasymulowano dla różnych wartości obciążenia silnika na przebieg ciśnienia w poszczególnych przestrzeniach aparatury wtryskowej i w cylindrze w czasie cyklu roboczego w zależności od kąta obrotu wału korbowego silnika. W artykule sformułowano zależności matematyczne i wykorzystano dane eksperymentalne, umożliwiające obliczenie interesujących parametrów i wskaźników charakterystycznych dla symulowanego procesu. Model uwzględnia właściwości wtryskiwanego paliwa, parametry konstrukcyjne sytemu wtryskowego oraz ciśnienie i temperaturę czynnika roboczego
