Opis:
Embodied cognition: assumptions, theses and challenges: The paper aims at providing a concise presentation of the concept of embodied cognition that emerged in the cognitive sciences a few decades ago and has gained great popularity among empirically and philosophically informed researchers. The term “embodied cognition” is used by the author in two senses. The narrow sense implies that the body plays an important role in the process of cognition. In the broad sense “embodied cognition” is to characterize the general tendency within cognitive science which finds its articulation in the 4E perspective on cognition. The working hypothesis of the 4E perspective is that cognition depends on the characteristics of the agent’s body and its interaction with the physical and social environment. It emphasizes that cognition is: embodied, embedded, enacted, extended. After reconstructing the key concepts and basic assumptions the author offers a brief appraisal of the views under discussion. He claims that the characteristics of such a trend are incomplete and not homogeneity since the perspective encompasses at least a few related and partly overlapping views on cognition. The author concludes that “embodied cognition” serves as a label for a variety of research programs (or program designs) within cognitive science rather than a strictly defined and well-established research tradition or a new paradigm.

The undertaken considerations seek for revealing that in the thought of Plato there are few different approaches to the problem of truth. They start with the epistemological aspect which was inherited by Plato from Parmenides according to which truth is a constitutive element of human cognition and knowledge, an element that is conditioned by precisely determined indicators such as universality, necessity and invariability. The important contribution of Plato in explaining the problem of truth is where he underlines its meaning in the accomplishment of human being. The natural ability for knowing truth is the most crucial expression of humanity that is why more he draws on truth more he exists.

The presented article reports on an empirical and comparative study that aimed at investigating the overall level of metacognitive awareness of Iranian and Lithuanian university students, as well as its weakest and strongest sub-components and related metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) items. To obtain a detailed measure of the levels of metacognitive awareness of the two groups, with a total sample size of 755, Schraw and Dennison’s (1994) MAI was used. Data comparisons show that Lithuanian university students have a medium level of metacognitive awareness, while a low level has been detected in Iranian students. Upon examining the subcomponents of the knowledge of cognition component, the mean score obtained for declarative knowledge was found to be highest in both groups. Although in the Iranian group the lowest mean score was related to conditional knowledge, in the Lithuanian group it was procedural knowledge. Considering the regulation of cognition component, the highest mean score was obtained in the planning subcomponent in the Iranian students and in the evaluation subcomponent in the Lithuanian students, while the lowest mean score was obtained in the monitoring subcomponent in the Iranian students and in the debugging subcomponent in the students. The results of this study may contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning.

Learning from contemporary natural, formal, and social sciences, especially from current biology, as well as from humanities, particularly contemporary philosophy of nature, requires updates of our old definitions of cognition and intelligence. The result of current insights into basal cognition of single cells and evolution of multicellular cognitive systems within the framework of extended evolutionary synthesis (EES) helps us better to understand mechanisms of cognition and intelligence as they appear in nature. New understanding of information and processes of physical (morphological) computation contribute to novel possibilities that can be used to inspire the development of abiotic cognitive systems (cognitive robotics), cognitive computing and artificial intelligence.

This paper contains a few critical remarks concerning some fundamental assumptions and claims propagated by Lakoff and Núñez in their monograph Lakoff, Núñez (2000). Our attitude is skeptical (cf. also Pogonowski,2011). We agree with the idea that conceptual metaphors may play some role in the formation of elementary mathematical notions. However, we disagree with the authors’ claim that such metaphors provide the main mechanism in the emergence of new notions in advanced mathematics.

The aim of the paper is a critical reconstruction and comparison of the philosophical positions of John Locke and George Berkeley on the problem of cognition as a reflection (Abbildtheorie) of reality. The article argues that Berkeley rejects the theory of transcendental reflection, but he does not refute any theory of reflection, because he recognizes the theory of immanent reflection. It is the background for the philosophy of Immanuel Kant that he has more connections with the realism of Locke than the idealism of Berkeley.

The article concludes by critically considering the merits of a complexity perspective but also reflecting on the challenges it poses for research.

The article, drawing on the tradition of Frankfurt School, brings to the focus a great paradox of the Enlightenment – a hidden affinity of rationality and mytho- logy. Noticing the phenomenon of great enthusiasm, underlying the message of the Enlightenment, it tries to pin down the starting point of a new scientistic eschatology – bringing to life a mirage of unending prosperity and unlimited pro- fusion, following the advances of science. The idea of accumulation of knowledge is approached as a pivot of a new mythology. At the same time, putting light on the notion of “cognition industry”, the article offers critical insights tracing an inevitable erosion of high-minded dreams and expectations. Cognition industry is studied as a machinery turning up-side down the hopes of the Enlightenment – protecting the interests of instrumental rationality, and replacing the ideal of getting at the truth with the mechanism putting in motion the “production” of truth, operating in a domain of narrowly calibrated utility.

The topic of this article is the issue of the material dimension of religious language. This problem is often disregarded in research on religious language even though the use of language as a material object is significant in many religions. The functioning of religious language as a material object refers to all ways of using it that focus on the physical form of signs, such as speech sounds or writing. In my presentation, I will specifically discuss the cognitive functions of material substrates in religious language and argue that these substrates make up a larger cognitive system, including not only the mind but also material objects. Referring to the concept of extended cognition, I will argue that material symbols used in religious language can be considered external tools that enhance the capabilities of the cognitive system and enable new ways of processing and spreading religious ideas.

Chiaroscuros of persuasion. Fragments of the ero//theo//r(e)tical discourse The article entitled Chiaroscuros of persuasion. Fragments of the ero//theo//r(e)tical discourse is a reflection concerning the rhetoric paradox, which, as an ingredient of septem artes liberales – was an efficient cognitive, understanding and thinking tool. Today, however, its position is described in the following article with the usage of “light” and “shade” metaphors. The rhetoric of various theoretical models (in the sciences and in the humanities) has become, in our times, a reason for asking the fundamental question about the status of the relation between language and reality, between cognition and interpretation. Does the desire for knowledge, the passion of thinking, indicate the existence of an objective and cognizable reality, or is it quite the contrary: does it prove that there is no non-linguistic reality?

Opis:
Emotions appeared very early in phylogenetic and ontogenetic development. The word emotion originates from the Latin verb movere. However, attempts to distinguish and name the concept represented by the phrase emotion reach back to the beginnings of human language. The compound and subjective nature of emotions stress an essential aspect of this phenomenon, which leads to changes in physiological, psychological, and behavioral issues. World literature dedicates significant attention to the mutual associations between the cognitive and adaptive processes and emotions. Emotions help to estimate the adaptational meaning of stimuli. Its cognitive aspect is, however, just as significant. The review of the literature presented herein is an attempt to classify and evaluate particular emotions, both positive and negative, and the influence they have on physical and mental health. Paul Ekman, the author of one of the more esteemed classification attempts, has distinguished six basic emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. These universal emotions are recognized based on emotional facial expressions, the automatic reactions that unfold within microseconds. Robert Plutchik, on the other hand, devised his „emotion wheel” upon which he organized eight basic emotions by grouping them in pairs comprising a combination of positive and negative emotions. He is also the author of one of the best framed emotional combination theories. In this respect, emotions play a crucial role as compound model reactions to everyday situations such as a long-lasting effort ensuring survival and individual development.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is the evaluation of how the decline of cognitive abilities caused by aging is moderated by biologically determined personality dimensions: Neuroticism (N) and Extraversion (E). Materials and Methods: The research was conducted with the participation of 160 men in good physical health, professional drivers, aged 20–70 (Mean = 40, SD = 11). Personality traits were measured using Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire — Revised (EPQ-R), while Ravens Progressive Matrices, Go/noGo Task and Peripheral Perception Test were used to evaluate cognitive processes. The score of Ravens Progressive Matrices was treated as a control variable. Results: The results of the study, based on a Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis, indicate that besides the intelligence level, age is the best predictor of cognitive functioning level and that this infl uence is additionally moderated by the N trait level as well as, less frequently, by the interaction of age and E. Conclusion: This means that high N trait level increases the infl uence of age on cognitive functions decline. When the N trait level was low, the age differences in measures of cognitive performance were not signifi cant. Thus, the level of N trait may play an important role in the process of cognitive aging. The results are discussed in the context of a driving safety research.

The paper presents arguments for treating language as a tool for cognition and communications. It articulates an opposite view to the one which considers language as an independent module shaping cognition and thinking. According to the conception of the socially – based cognition the mind is a controller of the adaptive behavior, and communication is a strategic action to which language is subjected. The model of the linguistic categories arranges words according to the level of their abstraction; and a number of research results presented in the paper indicate that there is a relationship between the level of abstraction of the words used and the inference related to events, emotions and memory. Recognizing language as a tool for cognition and communication leads to the acceptance of the necessity to widen the language awareness. This kind of thinking is supported by the presented results of research on the relationship between linguistic categories and the stereotypes, communication of the interpersonal distance and the process of asking questions and giving answers.

It is often claimed that structured collections of individuals with mental or cognitive states—such collections as courts, countries, and corporations—have mental or cognitive states of their own. The existing critical literature casts substantial doubt on this claim. In this paper, I evaluate a defensive move made by some proponents of the view that groups have mental or cognitive states of their own: to concede that group states and individual states aren’t of the same specific natural kinds, while holding that groups instantiate different species of mental or cognitive states—perhaps a different species of cognition itself—from those instantiated by humans. In order to evaluate this defense of group cognition, I present a view of natural kinds—or at least of the sort of evidence that supports inferences to sameness of natural kind—a view I have previously dubbed the ‘tweak-and-extend’ theory, as well as a theory of cognitive systems. Guided by the tweak-and-extend approach, I arrive at a tentative conclusion: that what is common to models of individual cognitive processing and models of group processing does not suffice to establish sameness of cognitive (or mental) kinds, properties, or state-types across individuals and extant groups, not even at a generic level.

Copyright (2001) was interpreted as a story about childhood and adolescence, presenting both experiences of a maturing protagonist as well as the Polish reality of the last two decades of the 20th century. Coming to terms with his own childhood and a search for the language to express his own „self” determines the narration of the book. However, this rhythm of narration is disturbed by objects of disgust that the stories teem with. As a result, the author would like to suggest interpreting the collection of stories by Witkowski from an affective perspective. By analysing the diffrent texts, the author explains what role disgust and its objects play in the collection. It is argued that despite its negative properties disgust may be a necessary condition of self-fulfilment and a source of affective cognition. This happens among others thanks to becoming aware of childhood feelings the main character experienced when confronted with the disgusting people and objects.

The objective of this article is to highlight the role of the spirit as an intangible component in the attractiveness, conviviality and success of public places. The comparative study, which covers two public places having the same typo-morphology and sharing the same geographical and sociocultural context, aims to measure the spirits of these two places. The study is based on a theoretical conceptualisation and quantitative analysis of data collected using a measurement tool having satisfactory psychometric qualities. The two main statistical techniques employed are the relative importance index (RII) and the T-test. The results of the study show that the valence1  of the spirit affects the attractiveness, the conviviality and the success of public places. 1Kurt Lewin was one of the first to use the word ‘valence’. This is in a way synonymous with the value of psychic force with a positive or negative polarity and a degree of high, low or neutral intensity (Rainio 2009).

The article covers the antithesis of positive and negative knowledge and its projection on the field of language. By the example of the Sermon on the Mount, the thesis of non-discursive nature of word and its contrasting to speech is affirmed. In connection with the antithesis under consideration, such questions of phenomenology are addressed as embodiment of meaning in a word, essential irrelevance of existing institutions and instances of the language. Distinction is made between authentic appeal and institutional methods of identification presented in nominal discourse.

Opis:
The question of whether sociologists should investigate the subjective experience of non-human others arises regularly in discussions of research on animals. Recent criticism of this research agenda as speculative and therefore unproductive is examined and found wanting. Ample evidence indicates that animals have the capacity to see themselves as objects, which meets sociological criteria for selfhood. Resistance to this possibility highlights the discipline’s entrenched anthropocentrism rather than lack of evidence. Sociological study of the moral status of animals, based on the presence of the self, is warranted because our treatment of animals is connected with numerous “mainstream” sociological issues. As knowledge has brought other forms of oppression to light, it has also helped to challenge and transform oppressive conditions. Consequently, sociologists have an obligation to challenge speciesism as part of a larger system of oppression.

The article presents Edmund Husserl’s idea of transcendental phenomenology in the perspective of the project of science. This aspect of Husserl’s writings was pointed out by, for example, Rudolf Bernet, Manfred Brelage, Iso Kern, Eduard Marbach, Eugen Fink, Ludwig Landgrebe, and Roman Ingarden. The main aim, realised in the article is to prove the main hypothesis claiming that transcendental phenomenology is closely connected with Husserl’s conception of philosophy, the idea of philosophy as a science (eidetic and transcendental). The project of transcendental science and knowledge is also connected with Husserl’s conception of transcendental reduction taken as a mode of revealing those constitutive achievements of consciousness which were covered in the natural attitude. In the paper, I focus on presenting the most important points (epistemological, methodological, and transcendental) connected with Husserl’s evolution of phenomenology in the perspective of the project of science.

Inquiry-based education as a means of teaching has not been sufficiently studied in the context of empirical cognition in children of lower ages. The currently enhanced space for preschool science education creates possibilities to verify the applicability of physical experiment in the empirical cognition of preschool children and its effect on the development of their creative thinking. The developed Empirical Cognition Development Programme was implemented in kindergarten conditions and empirically verified in a quasi-experimental design on a sample of 102 children (2 experimental groups N = 71; 1 control group N = 31). To capture the level of creative thinking and its changes in children, the Torrance Figural Test of Creative Thinking (Torrance, 1974; Jurčová, 1984) was used. Results of comparative analyses showed a statistically and practically significant increase in the level of the creative thinking factors studied (fluency, flexibility, originality) in one of the experimental groups in comparison with the control group. The article discusses the results and implications for educational practice in the conditions of preschool education.

Opis:
Quantum mechanics introduces a new set of revolutionary principles, such as wave-particle duality, superposition, uncertainty, complementarity, entanglement, as well as a fundamentally new approach to probability. Quantum mechanics was created to explain some paradoxical discoveries that were impossible to understand using classical physics. Nowadays we have a similar problem in cognition and decision making – there are many paradoxical findings that seem irrational according to classical probability theory. For example, under some conditions, people judge the probability of event A and B to be greater that the probability of A, which is called the conjunction fallacy; or they judge the probability of A or B to be less than the probability of A, which is called the disjunction fallacy. The aim of this article is to describe the Quantum Cognition research program, which applies the abstract, mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics to cognition and decision making. Quantum probability theory, initially invented to explain some effects on measurements in physics, appears to be a powerful tool to explain some findings in the cognitive sciences.
Mechanika kwantowa wprowadziła nowy zestaw rewolucyjnych idei, takich jak dualizm korpuskularno-falowy, superpozycja stanów, nieoznaczoność, komplementarność, splątanie i całkowicie nowe podejście do prawdopodobieństwa. Mechanika kwantowa została stworzona w celu wyjaśnienia paradoksalnych odkryć, całkowicie niemożliwych do wyjaśnienia w ramach fizyki klasycznej. Współcześnie podobną sytuację możemy znaleźć w naukach o poznaniu i teoriach decyzji – wiele odkryć wydaje się paradoksalnych z punktu widzenia klasycznej teorii prawdopodobieństwa. Kwantowa teoria prawdopodobieństwa, pierwotnie stworzona w celu opisania pomiaru w mechanice kwantowej, wydaje się skutecznym narzędziem w modelowaniu czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych.

The considerations start with love, because it seems to be what should drive human spiritual life and lead man to his heart. The second part of the article contains what can be achieved by applying Descartes’ thought for searching for what is true and permanent. When we see in the world the fact that there are many beings, and we indicate that the particular beings exist in a compositional way, we face the task of learning about a new problem: how can we define and determine the relations between beings and between the elements within a being? Although the theory of participation has roots that go back to Plato, and so to a philosophy in which the pluralism of being was rejected and which accepted an identity-based conception of being, participation finds its ontological rational justification only (and ultimately) in the pluralistic and compositional conception of being. With the description of participation as a “descending road” in the cognition of being, we are restricting ourselves to the presentation of how participation is understood in realistic metaphysics (while we shall leave aside the history of the question). We will show the aspects of participation that provide a foundation for wisdom-oriented cognition, and we will show the specific character of participation-oriented cognition as a “descending road.”

The rise of embodied cognition in recent ten years has brought about significant influence on the research of moral psychology. On the one hand, the development of neuro-cognitive science has facilitated the research of morality deeply into the mirror neurons of brain, no longer being limited simply on the philosophical speculation; and on the other hand the experimental research of embodied cognition has provided new evidence for some traditional and philosophical moral issues and even made some new recognition of the issues which are different from the traditional interpretations. Tracing back to the research of the Western moral psychology, we find that cognitive rationality and virtual ethics are the two main research lines for moral psychology.(1)J. Piaget and L. Kohlberg opened a way for the research of cognitive development of morality, and their successors have formed new Kohlbergian School, such as the moral judgment theory based on DIT proposed by J. Rest and his colleagues, G. Lind’s dual-aspect theory based on his MCT and KMDD®; the social cognitive domain theory proposed by E. Turiel and his colleagues; the feminine caring ethics advocated by C. Gilligan and N. Noddings; the Social Intuitionist Theory proposed by J. Haidt based on evolutionary psychology, cultural psychology and neuro-cognitive science and so on. (2) The traditional moral philosophy and ethics have opened another way to the research of character education and virtues, such as the American movement of character education facilitated by W, Bennett and T. Lickona and others; the argument between J. Rawls and R. Nozick on moral problems; A. C. MacIntyre’s moral critique to the Western societies and his virtue ethics and so on. Since 21st century the research of embodied cognition has broken through the limitation of the traditional research on moral psychology, attempting to realize the new synthesis of intellect, human body and its environment, and therefore started the embodied research of moral judgment which is unfolded around the three dimensions of physical cleanliness, disgust, body temperature and body movements. I has also assimilated Piaget and Vygotsky’s ideas of psychological development, the theory of conceptual metaphor in cognitive semantics and the theory of evolutionary psychology, and made its theoretical interpretation and exploration for the embodied effect of moral judgment. Since the variable of physical body could have its influence on individual moral judgment by means of one’s emotion and cognitive elements, the moral judgment based on embodied cognition should be integrated with the theories of moral judgment, especially with moral competencies that are the core of moral judgment, and meanwhile the relationship between the embodied cognition and moral intuition should be deeply explored, and the issues such as chronergy, that is, time efficiency, and dynamics taken place when there is the embodied effect should be further examined, the regulated variables of embodied effects while making moral judgment and the individual differences should also be found out through detailed research. And finally we should check out the embodied effects of moral judgment through the cross-cultural comparison.

In anthropology, we talk about two methods of cognition – emic and etic. In my article, I consider the opportunities and limitations of this conception in relation with press journalism by substituting genology for a search of the subject’s experience.

The author attempts to demonstrate that the poem "Eliasz" by Bolesław Leśmian has cognitive character. She devotes a lot of attention to the connections between Leśmian poetry and realistic symbolism. Part of the article concerns the poet’s description of the netherworld. Furthermore, it inquires whether the poem accomplishes the ultimate pursuit of poetry – remaining open to one true reality, free of individualism and intellectual constraints. Eventually, the interpretation demonstrates how, through a detached protagonist – "Eliasz", Leśmian begins to doubt the power of poetry to bring one back to primeval cognitive context, to such state of mind where reality is experienced directly through intuition and imagination.

Categorizing by using prototypes contributes to the development of individuals’ vocabulary in various fields and also in discovering the most important distinctive features in order to define object, beings or abstract notions of the perceived world. A good definition must contain not only distinctive features but also specific attributes, in order to increase its accuracy.

Opis:
The issue of intentionality was posed anew in philosophy by Franz Brentano. However, it was Brentano himself who indicated that the source of intentionality-related problems dates back to Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The search for the original traces of this issue in the history of philosophy has led me to conclude that intentionality as an inalienable characteristic of consciousness is characterized by three-dimensionality, which is expressed in theoria, praxis and poiesis. Contemporary research focuses primarily on cognitive intentionality, examining in particular either the very subject-object relation or the immanent (intentional) object, in-existing in psychical experience (in the acts of consciousness). And yet, intentionality is a basic feature of the whole consciousness-anchored (mental) life of a human being. It determines the whole consciousness-based activity of the subject in abstract theorizing, practice and production. Therefore, it manifests itself as a mode of being of a conscious (mental) entity, i.e. an entity partially constituted by intentional content, relationality, reference, directionality, openness and conscious awareness , as well as determining the meaning and the creation of purely intentional beings. Intentionality is revealed as a primary factor in the awakening of consciousness, through the building (constituting) of conscious experiences that are poietic, practical and theoretical. Each of these three ways of categorizing the nature of experience, however, indicates only the predominant aspect of a given experience, for strictly speaking experiences are determined by all three aspects. Intentionality and – consequently – all conscious experience, are thus characterized by three-dimensions: cognitive, activistic and productive. Any act of consciousness is always a form of activity that is informed by its cognitive aspect and produces something transcendent with regard to itself. The recognition of the three-dimensional nature of intentionality allows us to understand the human being and the dilemmas concerning his actions, knowledge and creativity.

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the initiatory (mystagogic) function of religion, which is associated with its essential spiritual (salvific) function. The text comprises three parts. The first one addresses the problems concerning the very definition of the phenomenon of religion, the attempts to formulate its definitions, either substantive (reflecting the essence of religion) or functional (emphasizing the functions of religion), and the issue of their empirical verification. In the second part, the various functions of religion are outlined in light of the distinction between essential and auxiliary functions (specifically and non-specifically religious). One of these is the initiatory (mystagogic) function, the verification of which takes place in the affective cognition of God. The third part characterizes the affective cognition of God, which originates in the affective states and leads to a deeper knowledge of the Absolute.

Introduction. Schizophrenia to a considerably great degree impairs the social functioning of the persons affected in the spheres of interpersonal and occupational contacts, as well as self-care. It brings about serious cognitive, perceptual, motor and emotional deficits, inevitably leading to the social withdrawal of patients. This phenomenon may assume various forms, from the limitations in interpersonal relations, through narrowing these relations to only some circumstances, to the total cessation of social contacts. Objective. The objective of the study is presentation of the most important problems related with social functioning and quality of life of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, based on scientific studies conducted in Poland and worldwide. State of knowledge. The family of a schizophrenia patient exerts a great effect on the social functioning. While undertaking proper actions the family may become a co-therapist and significantly facilitate the patient’s adjustment to life in society and his/her playing a specified role. Analysis of disorders in social functioning of patients with schizophrenia, in the context of social cognition, indicates the fact that these disorders have their source in the lack of capabilities for identification of own and other people’s internal states, whereas mentalization is the essence of social cognition. Conclusions. Therapy, any psychosocial impact as well as rehabilitation, neutralizes the causes for patients’ withdrawal from social life. Training of social skills is necessary which teaches patients to return to the situation when they would be able to function properly in their environment.

The analysis focuses on the participation of those processes in such behaviours as gaze-following, social referencing, pointing, and joint action. By engagement in these activities children provide the evidence of implicit understanding of separateness of one’s own perspective and that of the others. Due to their reference to the psychological common ground emerging between them, participants of a coordinated joint engagement are able to adequately understand their activities. Development of the ability for explicit (articulated) perspective-taking is possible only as an outcome of participations in joint attention and joint engagement.

Theories of discourse (van Dijk, 1985; 1990; Shugar, 1995) and of cognitive development (Karmiloff-Smith, 1992; Stemplewska-Żakowicz, 2001; Tomasello, 2002) indicate that in discourse the child has an opportunity to gain knowledge about invisible phenomena and is confronted with distinct perspectives. The child has also an opportunity to name and organize his/her emotions and to make distinctions between them due to verbal terms provided by his/her partner in discourse. Therefore the child’s participation in emotional discourse facilitaties his/her becom ing aware of his/her emotional states together with their causes and consequences, and – due to confrontation with distinct perspectives – the development of the discursive representation of emotions.

This paper argues that within contemporary neuroscience and cognitive psychology a new theoretical framework is emerging for the integrated consideration of unconscious (intuitive) processing with conscious ones. This framework requires inclusion of new theories of the brain and consciousness dynamics (Baars, Damasio, Dehaene, Friston, Gazzaniga, LeDoux), evolution of the human memory system (Tulving), and theories of procedural, associative and working memory (Baddley, Reber). Evolutionarily old intuitive processing is not unique, and it is an integral component of any cognitive processes. A revolutionary new synthesis combining intuitive and conscious processing may take the form of a mind vector integrating the two.

The paper is aimed at finding answers to the following questions: (1) Is there empirical evidence for the psychoanalytic concept of transference? (2) Is there empirical evidence for the usefulness of working with transference in psychotherapy? Objections concerning the reality and practical value of transference have been summarized. A review of research dedicated to transference has been conducted, covering fundamental research in the psychology of social cognition as well as research on psychotherapy using both psychodynamic and nonpsychodynamic approaches. Studies from the first group confirm the existence of transference. Studies from the second group indicate conditions in which working with transference in psychotherapy seems to be efficient. Implications for psychotherapy practice have been formulated.

The article discusses various forms of embodiment in lived religion and different ways of studying them. It focuses on three approaches to embodiment: the study of religious subjectivity that involves experiencing one’s own body, the study of shared cultural representations of the body, and the study of determinants that change body states and thus influence religious thought and behavior. It is argued that embodiment in lived religion does not just mean that the body is at the center of religious life. Embodiment manifest itself in all dimensions of religious life from ritual behavior to ineffable religious experience. It is most clearly seen in everyday religious activity that forms the core of lived religion.

How do we share embodied knowledge? How do we understand the world through our bodies? How can we effectively interpret and communicate somatic experiences to a wider audience? These questions emerged during a collaborative research project Let’s Improv It (August 2016, Plymouth University), which set out to explore how kinaesthetic empathy and multisensory perception help us to understand our own actions, intentions and emotions, as well as those of others. We additionally questioned the role and perception of physical and emotional touch within embodied knowledge. After a five-day practice-led investigation, a 20-minute improvised somatic movement score was developed with the aim of providing a novel experience of touch and movement. The authors collectively delivered the score and reflected on the outcomes of this experience over the course of a year (2016–2017). In this paper, we explore how our research project expanded the boundaries of the conventional concepts of knowledge and cognition. We see such participatory sessions, in which movement and embodied experience freely unfold in time and space, as a ‘laboratory’ in which we examine the underlying mechanisms of collaboration. We reflect on how such an experience can be seen as a creative process, or as an emergent, collaborative artwork. The participants are both the creators and, simultaneously, the audience of our improvised experience. The experience provided a non-judgmental context for physical engagement and observation, which is an outcome that will be introduced alongside participants’ feedback. Overall, the project revealed that shared embodied knowledge is highly appreciated, particularly among those without previous experience with embodied enquiry or movement research.

Opis:
Following upon Merlin Donald’s claim that human specificity emerges in history, and not exclusively in evolutionary time, it will be suggested that the diversified means of producing semiosis created by human beings account for the spread of empathy and altruism not only beyond the kin group, but to humankind in general. This amounts to treating other cultures as different from us, but still able to enter into communication with us (as an Alter), as opposed to treating these cultures as being part of nature, and thus only susceptible to being communicated about (as an Alius). Starting out from the theory of bio-cultural evolution defended by Peter J. Richerson and Robert Boyd, as well as from the multi-level selection theory of Elliott Sober and David Sloan Wilson, we try to lay bare the way in which semiotic structures play a role for transforming cultural evolution, contrary to biological evolution, into human history. We inquiry into what makes the existence of Alter-culture possible, if, as Sober and Wilson have claimed, armed with game theory, an altruistic society (an Ego-culture in our terms), is only possible in opposition to another group in relation to which group egoism rules (that is, in our terms, an Alius-culture). We will follow Michael Tomasello in arguing for the primacy of games of cooperation, rather than competition, while adding an historical dimension, which serves to explain how such cooperation can be extended beyond the primary group (our Ego-culture). However, we will insist on the importance of multiple semiotic resources for the boot-strapping of empathy and altruism, as well as on the genesis of this process in cultural encounters, as reflected in the spirit of the Enlightenment.

Opis:
The article is devoted to teacher cognition of students at a younger school age. It refers to indirect cognition, which can be located between scientific and clinical cognition. It is characterized by the stages from initial cognition through symptomatic and causal cognition to the synthetic one. It also presents the factors that hamper teachers’ cognition. The article likewise presents the results of research conducted among a group of early childhood education teachers and their students. The research refers to teacher cognition in several areas: students’ attitude to learning, their participation in lessons, individual perception skills, perception skills in relation to the peer group, as well as students’ attitudes towards tasks, and their social behaviour. The image of teacher cognition that emerges from the conducted analyses indicates high compatibility of assessment results in relation to very good students, and high incompatibility of assessment results in relation to students with learning difficulties and special educational needs. Such a diversity may indicate the absence of temporary and substantial modification of the preliminary data and the lack of progression of teacher cognition – its blockage at the stage of symptomatic cognition, and “labelling” of students.

Étienne Gilson and Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec notice essential elements that determine philosophical realism. Such discovery allows a philosopher to build realistic concept of object, method and objective of metaphysical cognition thus standing against idealistic tendencies. Realistic object of metaphysical cognition is characterized by realism (intelligibility, self-evidence, extrasubjectiveness), universalism (unity and pluralism), neutralism (beings constituted in the existence considered as a real element of cognition). Realistic method of cognition according to Krąpiec and Gilson has to reject irrational understanding of common sense, abstractionism and cartesianism, while making use of thomistic understanding of common sense, existential judgements and metaphysical separation. Realistic objective of metaphysical cognition is oriented on cognition of causality, cognition of the first cause, understanding of the four Aristotle's causes, recta ratio and recta voluntas and analogous cognition. Due to determinants of realism mentioned before, it is possible to practice thomistic philosophy based on riches of the world given in the cognition.

Several studies (Keysar et al., 2012; Lazar et al., 2014) suggest that decisions made in a foreign language are more rational. The authors imply that when thinking in a language which is not our native tongue, analytical, slow, deep-thinking is activated. The question that underlies the present article is whether this is a characteristic of every mental operation in the foreign medium. Studies carried out by Costa et al. (2014), Geipel et al. (2015) and Hadjichristidis et al. (2015) suggest the issue is much more complex than it may seem. The answer to the question above was sought through a study in which 84 Polish advanced users of English as a foreign language were asked to solve mathematical problems from the Cognitive Reflection Test (Frederick, 2005). Initially the subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, who subsequently solved the problems in Polish (native tongue) and in English (foreign language). The article presents the results, discusses them and arrives at a number of conclusions as well as implications for further research.

The problem of loneliness is spreading across modern societies faster than ever before. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate that this change has negative effects not only on the wellbeing of individuals, but also on the political stability of democratic societies. Loneliness-induced impairments of social cognition make citizens maintain a hostile perception of others and prevent them from looking for truth and participating in reciprocal relationships. Inability to regulate emotions makes them, in turn, prefer affective narratives instead of facts, as well as succumb to manipulations or join unpredictable, deindividuating, totalitarian-like movements. The combination of aforementioned effects may pose a great threat to democratic systems. A suggested way to improve this situation is to fill in the gaps of human emotional instincts and ineffectiveness of welfare institutions, which endorse psychological and physical social isolation. It can be done by using various sorts of innovative applications of modern technologies.

Sleep deprivation affects numerous cognitive processes. Children populations have not been studied thoroughly, with regard to the effect of sleep deprivation on communication abilities. In this study, we investigate the pragmatic competence following acute sleep deprivation. Two eleven-year-old boys were evaluated on their pragmatic ability before and following sleep deprivation. The conversations were video-recorded, transcribed and analyzed using the CHAT conventions. The Pragmatic Evaluation Protocol Revised (PREP-R) was administered for the investigation of pragmatic ability. Both children demonstrated a significantly lower performance following acute sleep deprivation. Their specific pragmatic ability and grammatically-based pragmatic ability were impaired. The subjects were unable to use lexical, morphological and syntactic cohesion, and encountered difficulties in the interaction and the managing of pauses. Acute sleep deprivation affects pragmatic competence, mainly due to difficulties in alertness, attention, working memory, and executive dysfunction in general. Variability in the pragmatic ability of the two subjects implies that more studies, focused on the cognitive deficits after sleep deprivation can cast more light on the evaluation of pragmatic ability.

A Semantic-Cognitive Analysis of the Concept of Ukraine in the Speeches of B. Obama (2014)This article presents a semantic-cognitive analysis of the concept of Ukraine, verbally represented in the speeches of the American President, Barack Obama. The peculiarities of the President’s worldview are highlighted. The objective of the article is as follows. Firstly, it aims to demonstrate that the concept of Ukraine is verbally represented in the speeches of Obama. This means that Ukraine as a country, moving towards democracy despite the war with Russia, is an object of focus for American leaders. Secondly, the article suggests that there is a connection between the concept described, its pragmatic orientation and its cognitive processes. Thirdly, it describes the semantic peculiarities of the concept of Ukraine in the political speeches of the American leader, which are due to the role Ukraine plays in the local and regional context. Our research is based on the content-analysis of political speeches delivered by American President. The functional, communicative and pragmatic orientation of the speeches is highlighted. In line with the approaches of cognitive scholars, the article concludes that the concept of Ukraine is a complex semantic-cognitive structure that consists of core, transition zone and periphery. During the research for this article, fifteen speeches made by Obama in 2014 were analysed. This research presupposes the application of content analysis. It is relevant in the analysis of international relations with respect to the notions used by President Obama in his speeches delivered during 2014 in the relations between: the USA - Ukraine, Ukraine - Russia, the USA - Russia, and Europe - Ukraine. Podkreślam funkcjonalną, komunikatywną i pragmatyczną orientację politycznych przemówień.

This article briefly presents and characterizes a relatively young (nineteen-nineties) trend in methodology, the theory of science – and philosophy, called “the new experimentalism”. The fundamental problem is determined by the question about the value of the new experimentalism and experimental grounds of scientific knowledge in empirical sciences. In the first part of the article, the previous (old) experimentalism is presented. First of all, the history of the experimental method is outlined and the definitions of experiment, object, phenomenon, and of the carried out and analyzed observation are provided. It is shown why the main proposition of experimentalists – “determining a fact based on sensory experience” is fallacious. The second part describes the way in which the representatives of the new experimentalism try to identify and characterize those factors of an experiment that guarantee the objectivity of its result; demonstrate that results are not only determined by psychological, historical, sociological or economic factors but also that they exist in nature as real objects and events. A correct and reliable analysis of the experiment and its results may – according to the new experimentalists – contribute to this conclusion. Therefore, the important role and value of the experimental foundation of social activity in general, and in particular, for the natural sciences, is rightly noted.

As such the understanding of epistemology is referred either to a static state of knowledge or to a dynamic acquisition of knowledge by cognizing subjects. The point of arrival, in the conclusive part of a this article, constitutes the substantiation of the two understandings of epistemology, specified, firstly, as a set of investigative perspectives, which the subject of science has at his/her disposal as a knower on the metascientific level, or, secondly, as a psychophysiological endowment of a cognizing subject who possesses the ability of learning and/or knowing a certain kind of information about cognized reality.

This paper aims at elaborating the concept of linguistic self with regard to its twofold existence modes, namely as a physical person and as a mental subject, being shaped by external and internal dialogs in interpersonal and intersubjective communication. These dialogical encounters, constantly changing the reality of everyday life, are based, on the one hand, on the observable multitextuality of narratives, and on the other, on the multi-voicedness of opinions. As such, it lays emphasis on the need for a holistic approach to human beings as a psychosomatic unity, taking part in cognition with their minds and bodies, and developing itself both in-and-with the physical and logical domains of their surrounding ecosystems. In view of the private and public character of the self, the author postulates to consider in future studies the achievements of personal and social constructivism.

Opis:
This article formulates a thesis that the meaning of ‘subjectivity’ and ‘objectivity’ is not obvious and it is difficult to preserve in empirical research their ‘ontological’ understanding. The justification behind drawing attention to this – seemingly – obvious issue is still occurring (especially among people superficially familiar with quality methodology) conviction, that quantity research aspire to objective cognition, unlike, quality research – aspires to the presentation of an individual, subjective perspective of human experiences. I argue by recalling an example of alike sounding statements by graduates of pedagogy, which were subject to a researcher interpretation and they turned out to have significantly different meanings (similar words, different structural sense). I also introduce here (in short) the method of objective hermeneutics, signalling the basic assumptions and technical solutions applied while interpreting data. Although, I refer to empirical material, I do not present research results (I do not discuss the chosen issue) however, I pay attention to the difficulties with the reconstruction of subjective meanings and senses.

Po zaprezentowaniu bonawenturiańskiej koncepcji kontuicji podane zostały wybrane współczesne interpretacje tejże teorii kontuicji, by następnie podać: ocenę kontuicji w świetle współczesnej filozofii poznania w nauczaniu wybranych autorów. Bonawenturiańska kontuicja jest dzisiaj niedocenianym zagadnieniem poznawczym w zakresie teorii poznania Boga.
This article aims to present how Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio approached the mystical intuition of Saint Francis of Assisi. As a professor of the University of Paris, in order to explain the mystical intuition of Saint Francis, Bonaventure used the following theories: the exemplarism theory, the theory of spiritual senses, and his own theory of contuition. The article outlines Bonaventure’s concept of contuition as well as chosen contemporary interpretations of the theory, and then proceeds to evaluate contuition in the light of contemporary philosophy of cognition in the teachings of selected authors. Bonaventure’s contuition is a much underrated concept in the cognition of God theory.

The contact patterns of bevel gear sets are an important indicator for the acoustic quality of rear axle drives. The contact patterns are the result of complex interactions in the production process. This is due to many process steps, numerous influencing factors and interdependencies. In general, their effect on product variations is not fully comprehended. This impedes the design and control of the production process based on a holistic analytical model for new variants fulfilling the acoustic requirements. The approach with self-optimization is possible but can take a long time for the training of the artificial neural networks and the necessary iterations until a satisfying precision for the predicted process parameters is achieved. Also it can occur that the algorithm is not converging and therefore no satisfactory result is turned out at all. In this paper an approach is presented combining the flexibility of self-optimizing systems with the higher precision of delimited solution finders called the Cognitive Failure Cluster (CFC). The improvements provided by the clustering of the optimization program are evaluated regarding the training time and the precision of the result for a production lot of bevel gear sets.

We examined the effects of gender and classroom membership on moral disengagement-cognitive justifications of detrimental conduct. Sixth-graders aged 11 to 13 years (N = 273) participated in the study. Bullying was registered using the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire and moral disengagement was measured on a 14-item scale designed for this study. The study showed that moral disengagement related to bullying and varied as a function of gender, which supports the relevance of considering gender in moral education anti-bullying programs. Next, the study revealed significant differences in moral disengagement between classrooms. This finding points to the need to elucidate associations between moral disengagement and classroom characteristics.

Artykuł przedstawia projekt nowej dyscypliny – metodologii sztuki.
This essay presents a project of a new discipline—the methodology of art. By analogy with the methodology of science, the task of the new discipline would be to investigate art as a cognitive activity, in particular, art’s cognitive method. The justification and closer description of the project takes the form of a table comparing the four types of cognition—the exact sciences (interpreted along the Popperian model), the humanities, the methodology of art and art—in terms of their object, method, format of knowledge, relation to truth, ways of justifying beliefs, the possibility of constructing experiments and the like. In the conclusion the essay offers some comments on the “artistic” mode of cognition. The main thesis of the article concerns the need and possibility of rational reflection upon art conceived of as a non-scientific mode of exploration of the human psyche.

Descartes considered himself as an originator of the method of methodical doubting, but, at the same time, he viewed his ideas as most ancient of all. In fact, he fairly closely followed in the footsteps of Socrates and his maieutic method of extracting the truth from an interlocutor in two phases: the elenctic method to demolish the interlocutor’s convictions and then coaxing the truth from him. Descartes’ methodical doubt is but a version of the elenctic method. Descartes also shares with Socrates the conviction of the existence of truth independent of the cognitive subject, which assured the possibility of successful conclusion of methodical doubting as well as the maieutic method.

Originative apprehension often has been examined in recent decades in light of Aquinas’ reflections. Yet there has not always been agreement in regard to what constitutes such, often due to different emphases given by interpreters to aspects of St. Thomas’ analyses articulated in different contexts. Arguably, it is possible to reconcile certain seemingly divergent important interpretations by reflecting on an important, yet somewhat recessive, theme that Thomas adverted to sparingly throughout his career in utilizing analyses of predecessors to forge his own synthesis to explain cognition in terms of being that is centered on the reciprocal priorities of judging and concomitant incomplex abstracting.

A list of 17 possible purposes and functions of interpersonal communication was derived from a literature review and used in a survey study. e questionnaire was lled out by 313 participants (international students being in Sweden) from diverse cultural backgrounds. The findings from this study suggest that the participants acknowledge very central aspects of human life to be the reason for communicating. The most agreed upon reasons why we communicate is to share and enhance enjoyment (share positive emotions) and to create and strengthen social bonds (manage relationships).

Opis:
One of the well-known polemics of Indian thought, in which many darśanas participated, is concerned with the problem of the validity (prāmāṇya) and invalidity (aprāmāṇya) of cognition (jñāna). The problem has two main aspects: the origination and ascertainment of validity and invalidity. Mādhava’s Sarvadarśanasaṃgraha and other external sources attribute to Sāṃkhya (a tradition of thought recognising the authority of the Vedas) the view that both validity and invalidity are intrinsic, and many researchers hold that this view is Sāṃkhyan. In this article, I reconstruct the Sāṃkhya view on validity and invalidity of cognition on the basis of classical and postclassical Sāṃkhya texts, that is, all extant Sāṃkhya texts from Īśvarakṛṣṇa’s Sāṃkhyakārikā to Aniruddha’s Sāṃkhyasūtravṛtti. I come to the conclusion that the Sāṃkhya view is different from the view attributed to Sāṃkhya. According to Sāṃkhya texts, validity is intrinsic and invalidity is extrinsic in terms of both origination and ascertainment.

Ambrosiaster uses two forms for the definition of the concept of faith. The first one – in the sense of a noun: fides; the second one – from the perspective of the knowing subject: credere. Abraham’s act of faith, whose object is God, is shown as a cognitive model. The acceptance of God’s authority leads to recognizing in Christ the Son of God. Believers receive in Baptism the gift the Holy Spirit and knowing the will of God. By participating in the fullness of His life, they are given access to the Eucharist. Knowability is one of God’s characteristics. Accepting this fact and submitting oneself to God’s guidance results in knowing the Trinity. Christ’s confidence in the Father is the basic principle of knowing through faith, and this translates into absolute certainty of the truthfulness of the conclusions. It is a duty of believers to explore the truth. The Gospel, interpreted by the authority of the Church, remains the main source of revelation. The intensity of cognition influences the entirety of one’s life, manifests itself in the acceptance of all the truths of the faith and in creating harmony between faith and the virtues of love and hope.

There is a lack of precise definition of the term, as well as related terms (such as earworm or musical imagery). InMI is often equated to earworms which does not do justice to its creative potential. Several authors suggest that InMI can be a source of new melodies useful for composers in their composition process. The article proposes that InMI can consist of new melodies and appear as a single event. Composers use their working memory and musical abilities to volitionaly loop the tune in their head, then transcribe it into external realm (notation, recording). Composers can later use it in their creative process. The use of InMI in composing is a matter of individual differences between composers.

One of the key research areas in the embodied cognition field is role of metaphors in creating abstract notions. One of such metaphors is vertical dimension (UP-DOWN) used e.g. for conceptualising positive and/or negative emotions. Its importance has been confirmed by many empirical findings, but some of them arouse methodological concerns regarding the stimuli selection and the level to which observed patterns are universal. The main goal of the present study was to replicate findings of one of the most influential experiments in the field. Its results pointed that positive stimuli are processed faster when presented on the top of the screen while negative ones are processed faster when presented on the bottom. The results of our study yielded a slightly different pattern: positive stimuli were indeed processed faster on top of the screen, but we did not replicate faster processing of negative stimuli on the bottom of the screen. Possible explanations of such a pattern of results were discussed, along with ideas for follow up studies.

It seems that the ability use information carried by number is not exclusive to educated human mind, contrary its origins are innate and common to humans and several other species.

Conceptual space framework is used for representing knowledge in cognitive systems. In this paper, we have adapted conceptual space framework for prosthetic arm considering its cognitive abilities such as receiving signals, recognizing and decoding the signal and responding with the corresponding action in order to develop a conceptual space of the prosthetic arm. Cognitive functionalities such as learning, memorizing and distinguishing configurations of prosthetic arm are achieved via its conceptual space. To our knowledge, this work is the first attempt to adapt the conceptual spaces to model cognitive functionalities of prosthetic arm. Adding to this, we have made use of different notion of concept that reflects the topological structure in concepts. To model the actions of the prosthetic arm functionalities, we have made use of force patterns to represent action. Similarly, to model the distinguishing ability, we make use of the relationship between the attributes conveyed by adapted different notion of concept.

The trouble of proving the effects of participation lies in the mismatch between three aspects of ownership: physical (possession), legal (ownership proper) and psychological (participation). In our interdisciplinary systemic model of ownership, we propose 10 relationships related to ownership/participation from: „A is a part of B” - greatest involvement to „A does not know about B” - the least involvement. „A” and „B” may take different values of: a person, an institution, a community, a group, an object (material, energetic, informational, purchasing). Once formalized we can view the studies in participation from one, system theory point of view, and formulate hypotheses related to many aspects of ownership. A multilevel analysis with multiple measures of both participation and effectiveness from two data sets has supported the proposed model.

This paper considers the foundations of legal interpretation against the background of the theory of embodied cognition and mental simulation. It is argued that interpretation has a double, concrete-abstract nature. The understanding of concrete language is made possible by the mechanism of mental simulation. In turn, the interpretation of abstract language (and hence of most of legal language) requires to apply the procedures of exemplification, paraphrase and embedding. The relationship between these two modes of language comprehension is analyzed and the thesis is defended that they represent two extremes of a continuous spectrum rather than isolated mechanisms. Finally, the significance of such a conception of interpretation for legal methodology is considered. It is argued that the conception provides a unifying, foundational framework for any theory of legal interpretation, as well as generates fresh insights into the nature of understanding legal statutes. cancelcancel

Opis:
Wilfrid Sellars very often expounds his philosophical views in an historical context. In his paper „Being and Being Known” Sellars gives a succinct account of his epistemology while at the same time discussing the Thomistic conception of sensory and intellectual knowledge. His aim in that paper is to provide a plausible interpretation of the doctrine that both the senses and the intellect are informed by the nature of external objects, and thus our cognitive acts are isomorphic with their objects. Sellars claims that there are two dimensions to that isomorphism, and that those separate dimensions are conflated by the Thomists, as well as by other philosophers. That is to say, there is isomorphism in the real or the natural order, and there is isomorphism in the intentional or the logical order. Sellars insists that in sensory cognition isomorphism holds merely in the real order. By contrast, intellectual knowledge is based upon the isomorphism of the intentional order. However, that isomorphism obtains in virtue of specific relations holding in the real order. Thus those two orders are intimately connected. Unfortunately, Sellars does not fully elaborate the nature of the connections between those two orders. I argue that in light of his commitment to ontological naturalism, Sellars should claim that ultimately there is only one isomorphism, namely the isomorphism in the real order. I suggest that his insistence that there are no genuine semantical relations holding between the elements of the intentional and the real supports such an interpretation.

This paper presents pretending as an enacted and fundamentally social activity. First, it demonstrates why we should think of pretense as inherently social. Then, it shows how that fact affects our theory in terms of what is needed in order to pretend. Standardly, pretense is seen as requiring a mechanism that allows one to bypass the ‘obvious’ response to the environment in order to opt for a symbolic response; that mechanism is imaginative and representational. This paper shows that the Enactive Account of Pretense reconsiders the idea that one needs to respond to an absent environment when pretending, proposing instead that socially constituted perceptual affordances for play allow for non-obvious ways of responding to the present environment. The enactive account of pretense suggests that one need not posit special cognitive pretense mechanisms and mental scripts in order to account for pretending, as available capacities for active perception and re-enactment of routines suffice. This paper concludes with suggestions for the kinds of cognitive skills that should be sought out to explain pretense

The subject embodied in the designed environment. Analysis of the use of the affordance concept in architecture: James Gibson’s ecological psychology is considered as one of the research subtraditions within embodied cognition. Gibson emphasizes the nature of the agent-environment interaction through the development of the theory of affordances. According to this idea, affordances are relational properties of the environment that enable a specific action for the agent. Currently this concept is being applied in many different contexts. This paper considers the application potential of affordance in architectural studies as a tool that analyses the agent’s interaction with the environment. In this context, the affordance category can be a tool that allows one to take into account the importance of space for the shaping of behavior and interactions between its users, without falling into architectural determinism. The main aim of this study is to analyze affordances as a category that, despite its diversity and vagueness, can play an important role in the embodied view of architecture (which integrates phenomenological trends in architecture and the results of neurocognitive research). The first part of the article is an attempt to synthetically place affordances in the context of embodied cognition and to point out the basic philosophical interpretations and discussions related to Gibson’s concept. In the next part, we situate the concept of affordances in the context of design practice. We also present the pros and cons of applying affordances to this ground. The last section in presenting the concept of affordances is considered within the background of the embodied current in architecture.

Paul Tillich was one of those important theologians of the 20th century who devoted much attention to issues related to theological theory of knowledge. In Tillich’s thought, God is the mystery of being infinitely close to man, but human cognition of this mystery is always mediated. This article analyzes the question of mediation in human cognition of God in the thought of the great protestant theologian. First, the mediating, symbolic character of all religious language is presented. Then the mediating nature of theology is analyzed. The third part presents the importance of mediation in human cognition of ultimate reality. The conducted research leads to the conclusion that, according to Tillich, there is no other way of thinking and talking about God than mediated in the created world. God ultimately remains a mystery that is revealed to us through the reality that surrounds us.

In most individualistic cultures, pride is regarded as a positive emotion that follows a positive evaluation of one’s competence or effort when achieving a goal. Fredrickson (2001) suggests that pride may expand individuals’ scope of attention and broaden their action repertoires by driving them toward greater achievements in the future. In the present study, we show that proud individuals may search for greater achievements by stronger willingness to cooperate with agentic though immoral individuals. We demonstrate that proud participants in comparison to participants in the control condition rely to a higher degree on information on agency and respect, and less on information on morality and liking of their potential partners of cooperation.

Opis:
It is now widely believed that the assumptions of the first cognitivist approach in linguistics should be completely replaced by the embodiment paradigm. While there is widespread agreement that the grounding problem is well understood in conceptual metaphor theory, a serious problem arises when trying to explain the mechanism of the emergence of abstract concepts (ungrounding problem, Dove 2016). In this article, I tried to show that the real problem facing embodiment theories is not how abstract thinking is embodied (Lakoff, Barsalou), but how embodied cognition can become abstract. This is the so-called “ungrounding problem” that breaks down into three minor issues: the generalization problem, the flexibility problem, and the dis-embodied problem. As I argue, only the adoption of an intermediate position between the theories of embodiment and distributive theories will allow us to formulate a satisfactory solution. The following article is an approximation of one such intermediate position as Guy Dove's theory of embodied and de-corporeal cognition.

This work presents evidence supporting the relationship between the dual aspect of moral competence (emotion and cognition) and social networks in school settings. We conducted empirical research with 160 students from various disciplines of the social sciences and different cohorts in two Brazilian public universities. Firstly, the participants responded to Georg Lind’s Moral Competence Test (MCT-xt). Following this, a sociometric generator regarding relationships of friendship and collaboration in social networks was applied, and several Exponential Random Graphs Models (ERGMs), with the MCT-xt score as an exogenous effect and predictor of these relationships, were utilized. We also used a Crisp-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis in order to determine if the cohorts, where the average MCT-xt was associated with the interactional structure, obeyed the same causal configuration. There exist two conditional configurations: (1) a sufficient score of MCT-xt in a social network with homogeneous status encourages a proactive search of collaboration; (2) an insufficient score of MCT-xt in a social network with homogeneous status encourages a collaborative exchange based on the popularity of some individuals. This work reveals how to interpret, at the grouping level, the results of MCT-xt.

The physiological and psychological responses to environmental heat stress have been well established. However, in the tropical climate (i.e., hot: 31 ±2 °C and wet climatic environment: 75% ± 10% rH), that concerns millions of people, most studies deals with exercise: Aerobic exercise is negatively affected and the impact of this environment on cognition is unclear. This short communication reviews some studies using cognitive tasks realized in tropical climate or using environmental conditions leading heat stress. In agreement with the literature, it is suggested that, at school, office or university in tropical climates, it is preferable to study in air conditioning or naturally ventilated rooms than in hot and wet climatic conditions in order to reduce feelings of fatigue and thermal discomfort. Further investigations, using cooling or psychological training techniques are needed in order to try to limit the negatives effects of tropical climate on cognition.

Objectives: This paper focuses on the main characteristics of aging and cognitive decline, considering also the aging process through the conceptual prism of biology (mechanisms of shortening of telomeres, cell oxidation and decrease in growth hormone segregation). The main objective was to study the effectiveness of the use of video games as occupational therapy intervention in the cognitive training of the elderly. Methods: Literature review was carried out according to PRISMA guidelines. The PICO strategy was used for the research question construction and the literature search; the P would be equivalent to the target population (Elderly), the I would be equivalent to the intervention of the intervention group (Videogames), the C to the existence of a control group (Control) and the O to the objective or variable to be modified (Cognition). The search was done in different scientific databases: Medline (Pubmed), Academic Search Complete, Cinahl y Psycinfo (EBSCO), Ibecs y Lilacs (BVS) y OTSeeker. Findings: The results are promising in terms of the effectiveness of video games in the cognitive training of the elderly. However, the effects varied in the different categories of video games. Conclusions: The use of video games may be an effective occupational therapy intervention for the cognitive training of the elderly. New research is needed about the potential cognitive benefits of the different categories of video games.

In Plato’s philosophical system ideas are eternal and constant objects that serve as patterns and causes of the material, changeable world. Things exist because they participate in ideas. In Eriugena’s philosophical system causes are eternal objects created by God that serve as source of order and the excellent creature. In an absolute sense ideas and causes are unknowable, although they are available to the human intellect to a certain extent. This article attempts to compare ideas and causes to understand them as well as to examine their role as causes of the changeable world. It is worth drawing such a comparison, for both Plato and Eriugena are central figures in the European culture and for our civilization.

This study investigated the use of computer games to detect the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an early stage of dementia, in the elderly. To this end, three serious games were used to measure the visio-perception coordination and psycho-motor abilities, spatial memory, and short-term digit span memory. Subsequently, the correlations between the results of the games and the results of the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), a dementia screening test, were analyzed. In addition, the game results of normal elderly persons were compared with those of elderly patients who exhibited MCI symptoms. The results indicated that the game play time and the frequency of errors had significant correlations with K-MMSE. Significant differences were also found in several factors between the control group and the group with MCI. Based on these findings, the advantages and disadvantages of using serious games as tools for screening mild cognitive impairment were discussed.

The article is an attempt to present different interpretations of transcendentalism of Immanuel Kant. The problem of transcendentalism is placed in a historical perspective, because it seems to be the only correct way for the proper recognition of the essence of Kant's thought. The article focuses on the analysis presented in two Polish interpretations of transcendentalism, one of which has been presented by Marek Siemek, and the other by Andrzej J. Noras. Siemek's interpretation goes toward reading Kant's transcendentalism through the prism of thoughts of J. Fichte, while Andrzej J. Noras tries to understand the transcendentalism of Kant referring to its historical origins and conditions. A. J. Noras’s proposal seems to be closer to Kant’s thought as it captures the essence of transcendentalism as such and could be a sees as a way to understand the true sense of Kant's postulate of "Copernican revolution".

Modular man – an analysis of brain and body adaptation to the technology in the context of the theories of extended mind and embodied cognitionThe ability to adapt to new and ever changing environment has always been one of the primary human skills. In fact, the capacity of using tools has been of upmost importance. The advancement of technology greatly improved the process of adaptation. It had a remarkable impact on the development of human nature, stepping into its inner structure. The technological evolution of mankind has been happening right before our eyes. People are becoming symbiotic with machines, and to various extents becoming cyborgs themselves. The main point of interest of this paper is to show how the embodied cognition theory and the extended mind theory are able to illustrate the phenomenon of cyborgization. Moreover, we consider how the concepts related to the modular structure of mind and body explain the technological adaptation of humans.

This article presents a theoretical review of the difficulty that exists in our days to understand and apprehend metacognition, given the problem that involves the construct itself. In addition, it is a complex concept to measure and to be able to apply it to the educational world and the teaching-learning process. This article discusses the importance of cognition and metacognition, as it establishes a clear difference between the two. A theoretical review of metacognitive research is presented, differentiating the existing research studies on control and the cognitive regulation from the research work that examines metacognition in the educational field. This article also reflects on the state of the metacognitive measurement and the difficulties to capture the metacognitive magnitude and scale as it relates to the capability to transfer these concepts to the educational world. It discusses viable ways to achieve a better development of the autonomy of the apprentices, being reflected in a "learning to learn" action that transcends the school environment and projects to all facets of meaningful learning.

Learning about language teacher cognition (LTC) is useful for understanding how language teachers act in the classroom. Employing an ecological framework, this study aimed to explore the factors influencing language teachers’ LTCs at different levels. To this end, qualitative data using semi-structured interviews and observation were collected from 62 (30 males and 32 females) Iranian EFL teachers. The results indicated that, at microsystem level, factors such as teaching equipment and facilities, teachers’ mood and feelings, their job satisfaction, and language proficiency influenced LTC. At mesosystem level, LTC was influenced by teachers’ prior learning experience, the collaboration and collegiality among teachers working in the language institute, teachers’ self-efficacy, and critical incidents that happened when teaching or learning. Additionally, the results indicated that exosystem level factors including teacher appraisal criteria, the teaching program and curriculum, and teacher immunity affected LTC. Moreover, LTC was subject to the influence of the government’s attitudes about ELT and religious beliefs about self and interaction, and friendliness with students at macrosystem level. More importantly, it was found that the factors influencing LTC were interrelated and interconnected and in several cases, LTC was a product of joint effect of several factors at various ecosystem levels. Finally, findings in this study suggest that language teaching programs provide recent educational technology in the classroom, foster collaboration and collegiality among teachers, and clarify teacher appraisal criteria for teachers in order to help create positive language teaching beliefs.

Opis:
The article is devoted to problems regarding the linguistic and cultural analysis of folklore. It has been proved that linguistic signs, related to the routine knowledge of order, the forms of its disruption and ways of restoring it, decipher ethnically determined parameters of certain categories, including legal subjectivity, legal consciousness and legal capacity that have been coded in folk poetic texts. The research focuses on the problems of linguistic culturological description of legal information in Ukrainian folk epic texts. The systematisation of theoretical notions that ground the necessity of cognitive and interpretative comprehension of a folk text, as an initial legal knowledge transmitter, has been carried out for the fi rst time. The choice of the linguistic culturological method for the analysis of the legal segment of oral folk creativity can be explained by the fact that culture, during its formation, is actualised in the form of folk discourses, represented by folktales, epic lyrical songs, ballads and other texts that refl ect the intellect of the many generations who created and used them. Folk texts transmit elements of social knowledge, verbalise the codes of a nation’s world view and become exclusive material for the philological study of various forms of ethnic and cultural experience. The perspectives of the investigation are based on the possibility to penetrate the legal sphere of sacral knowledge, coded in different Ukrainian folk genres, by means of a broad spectrum of language means.

Opis:
The article discusses the problem of the relationship between marketing science and institutional economy. Its goal is to examine the impact of institutional economy on the way of scientific cognition in marketing. The article was prepared on the basis of the study of the relevant Polish and foreign research literature, particularly concerning marketing theory. The methodology of the present study is based on the considerations taken up in deduction with the support of descriptive and comparative analysis. The impact of institutional economy on the method of scientific cognition in marketing results in the interest of marketing science not only in an enterprise but also in an effort to describe the external factors (externalities) and social costs related to marketing activities of enterprises. Of importance is also the understanding of the functioning of the structure of the marketing system as well as the reactions of the institutions responsible for the implementation of the country’s marketing policy. The analysis conducted for the purpose of this study leads to a general conclusion that marketing and science devoted to it are not homogeneous in epistemological terms and a significant dualism between the two can be pointed out. It encompasses traditional marketing which stems from management and marketing referring to the institutional economy of higher level.

Opis:
The paper attempts to introduce Polish readers to a theory presented by the American literary scholar Margaret Freeman in her recent book, The Poem as Icon (2020). In the monograph, Freeman analyzes ways in which the reader experiences reality – both visible and invisible – through poetry. Her fundamental assumption is that the relevant research question is not what literary art is, but how it comes to be what it is. The purpose of the present paper is to show that, although written by a literary scholar, the monograph corresponds to general tendencies that can be seen in contemporary humanities: in cognitive linguistics (in particular, Leonard Talmy’s theory of -ception and George Lakoff’s cognitive theory of metaphor), in the theory of linguistic picture of the world, or in discourse analysis. All these disciplines are based upon the assumption that the essence of the world is continuous change, and they investigate linguistic expressions in the process of becoming, which is relative to factors traditionally considered as non-linguistic. Freeman’s poetic cognition has a wide scope: it embraces cognitive processes of human mind, but also bodily and emotive cognition. Thus poetic cognition is embodied, and in Freemen’s theory a “poem-as-icon” ultimately becomes an illusion of the “here-and-now” direst experience.

Opis:
This short review paper focuses on Georg Lind's approach to the moral competence as described in his recent book (2016) How To Teach Morality? Promoting Deliberation and Discussion, Reducing Violence and Deceit. Berlin: Logos Verlag. Lind's dual-aspect approach is discussed as one of the leading conceptions of personal moral competence and moral cognition today. Intuitionist approach and "embodied cognition" are not enough, the author (E. Nowak) claims. As participants of social contexts and institutions, we need manifest, discoursively articulated reflection, self-reflection, and conversation. However, Lind's hypothesis of two leyers of morality, i.e., a conscious and unconscious finds evidence in cognitive sciences too. Lind's approach is not as reductionist as that of radical cognitivists. On the contrary, it combines all relevant aspects of moral cognition discussed right now, worldwide – when cognitive sciences flourish and the challenges for moral mind grow up dramatically.

How is (language) communication possible? What is its real underlying support? What does it mean that subjects communicate with one another? On what paradigm is such communication based: relativised or real? These questions constitute the starting point for propositions I intend to advance in this article. In short, these propositions concern both rationalist (logical) qualities of the cognising subject and rationalist (logical) qualities of the object of their (scientific) experience.

Opis:
In order to initiate and maintain meaningful interaction in a young learner L2 classroom, an adult teacher needs to approach children in ways consistent with their developmental profile and adjust teaching methodology so as to accommodate young learners’ current skills. This requires the ability to predict the child’s possible responses to classroom events by imagining what s/he might think and how s/he might behave when presented with specific instructions. Bearing in mind that the teacher’s perception of the world is purely and completely adult in nature, in order to be effective, educators need to create a mental image or a concept of a young learner by gathering knowledge about his or her developmental characteristics and fully grasping the pedagogical implications of this knowledge. In this paper, we aim to explore the role of imagination in the conceptualisation of a child as a second language learner amongst university level pre-service teachers involved in an early primary EFL education programme. We report on qualitative research based on data obtained in the course of a two semester teacher training course of 35 BA and 30 MA students majoring in English. In the study, we focused on the working image of the child’s developmental characteristics created by the participants and their ability to employ this in their teaching. Our data show a substantial discrepancy between the participants’ theoretical conceptions concerning the business of teaching and the actual actions undertaken during lessons with young learners. Although participants were able to successfully identify the most distinctive developmental characteristics of primary-level learners, they experienced difficulty with integrating them into actual classroom practice.

Opis:
This paper proposes a relational history of media artifacts, which decentralizes the dominance of the photographer or filmmaker as the absolute author of the work. It adds an alternative account to understanding the creative process and the subsequent study of media forms by discussing film and photographic practices as the reciprocal affective relationship between the maker, their intentions, materials, technologies, non-human agents and the environment. By reorganizing the anthropocentrism of art historical narratives, which typically exclude corporeality and materiality as drivers of human history, we are able to discuss the complex dynamic meshwork of determinants that bring photographic artifacts into existence: the lived, animate, vital materialism at once emergent and mixing of different causalities and temporalities. Within this position, I will provoke discussions of cognition and photography by recalibrating the moment of acting to a model that recognizes a distributed nature of human action into the material world of things. This new materialist position has repercussions for the way we understand processes of creativity and the emergence of media artifacts-seeing these as always already entangled and enmeshed across various corporeal and material, platforms and scales. This paper uses photography as a case study to discuss the broader theme of co-creation between humans, machines and the environment. Using documentary evidence from the archive, I sustain this argument by making a close reading of a particular photographer’s contact sheet, which shows up some of the dynamics of the relational meshwork playing upon the photographer in the field. Through this reading we can begin to think about the implications for the way we understand the emerging aesthetic discourse of technological photographic practices and, more broadly, the cocreative domains of all human activity.
