Opis:
Climate change is one of the most critical global issues, engaging not just researchers and activists but also members of the power elite responsible for political decisions. A key annual event for discussing the challenges of climate change is the UN Climate Conference. Its 26th edition, held in Glasgow in 2021, received widespread coverage in both traditional and online media, earning the moniker “last chance summit.” This article presents a study on the media portrayal of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26). Concept: The research focused on news published during the Conference in three primary TV news broadcasts (“News”, “Events”, “Facts”) and on the main pages of three internet news portals (Interia, Onet, WP). Results: The study found that COP26, while competing for media attention with other significant events (such as protests against anti-abortion laws and the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border), was featured by all surveyed media organizations. Additionally, each TV news outlet, through actions like sending reporters to Glasgow, and each online portal, through initiatives like participating in Greenpeace-organized events, emphasized the conference’s importance.

The state’s liability for damages in the field of climate change remains one of those areas of international law that has not yet been comprehensively regulated. At present, the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage, specific to the norms of international climate law, is not an alternative to the general principles of international law regulating responsibility and compensation issues of the states in the sphere of international climate law. The application of customary international legal mechanisms of responsibility of states in relation to climate damage can be a kind of challenge. Both the damage itself and elements such as causation or the possibility of attributing responsibility to the state pose a significant challenge in the sphere of climate protection. On the other hand, it is impossible not to notice that properly applied norms of general international law make it possible to overcome the difficulties arising from the specificity of the responsibility of countries for climate change. The latest jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice in environmental matters creates a framework for the settlement and implementation of possible liability for damages in the area of climate change.

Climate changes have been observed in Poland the recent decades and more pronounced climate changes are projected for the future. They impact on the natural and built environment of Poland, which has been shaped by both circulation of energy and matter, typical for moderate latitudes, and the properties of the landscape, inherited from the geological past. In the present paper, consequences of climate change (corresponding to model-based projections) for spatial organization of Poland have been reviewed.

Through this paper, the author tries to explore a simple yet complex question: how do we decentralize the human presence in conversations about climate-change? To do so, this speculative climate 2ction is presented through the non-human narrative perspective of mycelium (fungi). The speculative fiction provides a space for re-thinking our ontological and epistemological strategies and categorizations of nature/culture division, as well as how we understand nature in relation to human. The speculative climate-fiction proposes a reconsideration of human in relation to nature/climate, through fungi. It further explores how sensory, bodily, and multimodal methodologies may work in interaction to produce new possibilities to explore the corporealities of human-nature relationships and how a non-anthropocentric understanding of climate-change can allow for an emerging engagement with a vast mesh of human and beyond-human agencies. Drawing inspiration from Sylvia Plath, Ursula K. Le Guin, Margaret Atwood, and using Erin Manning’s understanding of a5ect as having a feltness that we often experience as a becoming-with, in this case, a becoming-with nature, the speculative-fiction (SF) is written as a dialogue between fungi and human. The SF also uses artwork created with mushrooms, fungal roots, as well as mushroom extracts, to exaggerate the presence of beyond-human beings in a new onto-epistemic strategy that reconsiders climate change and human–nature relationships.

Conflicts between particular sectors result in tensions, which some- times lead to “water wars” in different parts of the world. It is the reason why many national and international organizations are putting the water quantity and quality questions on the top of the world’s open questions/problems. The main aim of this paper is to present soil water balance of the Mediterranean region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, prepared for a long-term time series for two locations (Trebinje and Mostar) annually and during the vegetation period. The mean long-term data has been used as a base for future predicted calculation. The predicted PET was based on an increase in air temperature by 2°C and predicted decrease in precipitation by 25%. With so pre- dicted calculated data of monthly PET and monthly precipitation the predicted soil water balance was done.

The warming of the climate of the Earth has been unequivocal, most notably due to the mancaused increase of atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, leading to intensification of the greenhouse effect. Projections for the future explain that we are commited to further, possibly even more intense, warming, whose rate depends on the scenario of socio-economic development and effective climate change mitigation policy. If the global emissions grow in uncontrolled way and carbon sequestration potential decreases, the warming can attain a dangerous dimension. Global warming induces change in all variables of hydroclimatic systems. As demonstrated in the present contribution, the impacts of global climat change – both advantageous and (more often) adverse can be noted in all regions of the globe and in all systems and sectors, some of which are particularly vulnerable. Yet, many of these impacts can be avoided, reduced, or delayed, by effective climate change mitigation.

The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is now available. It provides policymakers with an assessment of information on climate change, its impacts and possible response options (adaptation and mitigation). Summaries for policymakers of three reports of IPCC working groups and of the Synthesis Report have now been approved by IPCC plenaries. This present paper reports on the most essential findings in AR5. It briefly informs on the contents of reports of all IPCC working groups. It discusses the physical science findings, therein observed changes (ubiquitous warming, shrinking cryosphere, sea level rise, changes in precipitation and extremes, and biogeochemical cycles). It deals with the drivers of climate change, progress in climate system understanding (evaluation of climate models, quantification of climate system responses), and projections for the future. It reviews impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, including observed changes, key risks, key reasons for concern, sectors and systems, and managing risks and building resilience. Finally, mitigation of climate change is discussed, including greenhouse gas emissions in the past, present and future, and mitigation in sectors. It is hoped that the present article will encourage the readership of this journal to dive into the AR5 report that provides a wealth of useful information.

Results from a series of five surveys among five groups of international climate scientists about their evaluation of elements of climate models and of climate change are presented. The first survey was done in 1996, the latest in 2015/16. Thus, our snapshots of the opinions of climate scientists cover 20 years. The results describe a strong increase in agreement concerning issues of manifestation of climate change, i.e., that the warming is real and not influenced by changing measuring and reporting practices, and concerning attribution of this ongoing climate change to ongoing anthropogenic causes. On the other hand, the evaluation of the climate models has changed little in the past 20 years. There are still significant reservations with the models ability to incorporate clouds and to describe rainfall. Obviously the growing conviction of ongoing man-made climate change is based on a variety of explanations, with modelling not being the predominant line of evidence. We suggest that it may be the repeated assessments by the IPCC, based on paleoclimatic evidence and stringent statistical analysis of the instrumental record which have led to the growing consensus of the warming and its causation. We stress that the presented results concern the opinion of climate scientists with a rather broad background. Our results do not assess if the opinions of the surveyed scientists are “valid” or “right”, but they recognize the character of science being a social process.

Opis:
The high reliance of Africa’s GDP on agriculture makes its economic growth susceptible to climate change. The vulnerability of Africa is further worsened by the strong inter-linkage that the agricultural sector has with other productive sectors. To drive policy implications that transform economic performance in Africa, it becomes important to understand the linkages between climate and economy of the region. This paper examines the effects that climate change has on economic performance in sub-Saharan African nations. Based on cross-country panel climatic data that takes account of the absorptive mechanism, it estimates the contribution of climate change to economic performance in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The estimator is developed based on the OLS, Fixed Effect, and the Arellano-Bond (1991) Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimator. The findings show that high temperature is a significant contributor to worsening economic performance in the SSA region. However, after accounting for the absorptive mechanisms, the relationship is no longer that strong. Specifically, after accounting for initial economic performance, social and political stability in the 2-stage GMM estimation, the estimate for temperature drops by 59%. This result confirms the hypothesis that the negative impact of climate change in the region is not absolute, and that building an overall stable socioeconomic environment in the region could assist in buffering the impact of climate change.

The discussion devoted to the climate crisis, like the crisis itself, is not a natural phenomenon but one that is wo-/man-made. It is socially constructed. It is not economic think-tanks that dominate this socially constructed discussion but other actors that do. This article analyses who is quoted and paraphrased in Slovak media writing about climate change. The analysis is based on 60 articles that were published in the third quarter of 2019 in selected non-tabloid daily newspapers (i.e. the quality press) in Slovakia – SME and N. The results show that natural scientists dominate the media discussion of this topic and are the source of almost one-third of the statements quoted and paraphrased in the newspapers. They are followed by politicians, who make up one-fifth of those quoted or paraphrased. Social scientists, activists, and NGOs each make up just 7% of those quoted or paraphrased. This research represents the first step towards answering the question ‘Who speaks?’ when it comes to this issue and towards a more thorough discourse analysis that could reveal how certain voices are marginalised in the mainstream public debate.

Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) is the main forest tree species in Burabai National Park. Trees here grow under continental climate conditions. There are no dendroclimatological studies based on Scots pine of this region. The purpose of this study was to find the relationships between tree-ring widths and climate. For this purpose, a total of 176 cores from 100 Scots pine trees were collected. After measuring tree-ring widths, standard chronology building methods were used, and three site chronologies were constructed. Correlation coefficients between tree-ring widths with temperature and precipitation were calculated. Precipitation from October of the previous year to July of current year had a positive influence on tree-ring widths and August–September precipitation have the opposite effect. Temperature in the winter had positive effect for tree-ring growth but significantly negative during summer. Effects of climate changes on tree-ring widths were observed. The variation and sensitivity of tree-ring widths increased after 1940s. An increasing trend in precipitation, temperature, and tree-ring widths were clearly observed. In conclusion, tree-rings of Scots pine in Burabai are highly sensitive to growing site conditions and are affected by climate changes.

The study aimed to assess the change of soil properties of land use patterns affecting drought and saline intrusion in the Ben Tre province during 2019–2020. Soil samples were taken, and the data on land use patterns of Rice, bare soil, Shrimp, and Coconut in three horizons were at 0–20 cm, 20–60 cm, and 60–100 cm. The analysis of soil pH, EC, organic matter, and bulk density was conducted to assess the changes in soil properties. The results showed that soil pH, EC, and salinity had to be slightly increased in 2020, but soil organic matter and bulk density were not changed. Therefore, the Ben Tre province’s drought and saline intrusion conditions had a negligible impact in general evaluation. However, it is necessary to perform more other studies to clarify the effects of drought and salinity.

Legal scholars have put forward a series of proposals to create a legally binding instrument for the protection of climate migrants. Their implementation, however, is fraught with political obstacles (in particular, the divergence of interest between developed and developing states, the sensitive nature of immigration and climate policies) and legal difficulties (problems with determining the scope of persons eligible for international protection, limited operationality of a universal international treaty for regulating such delicate and contentious matters and, in some instances, procedural obstacles). For these reasons the most effective approach to the issues of international assistance to climate migrants is to promote the perception of this issue as a form of adaptation to the effects of climate change. A helpful instrument that also may prove effective in this respect are multilateral and regional agreements.

Z przeprowadzonej analizy głównych programów adaptacyjnych do zmian klimatu w wybranych Państwach Europy Zachodniej i Polsce wynika, że dotyczą one kwestii kluczowych wymienianych w dokumentach strategicznych Komisji Europejskiej.
Climate change is one of the greatest contemporary threats to our planet's environmental, social and economic well-being, accompanied by major changes in life support systems on Earth, where the far-reaching effects will be felt in the coming decades. The Earth's climate is warming rapidly due to emissions of greenhouse gases caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. The Stern Report predicts that in the long term, climate change could cut global gross domestic product (GDP) by 5 to 20% or more each year if it is not brought under control by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of this paper is to compare the degree of influence of climate change on the economies of Western Europe and comparing national strategies for adaptation to climate change in selected countries of Western Europe and Poland. The analysis of the main initiatives for adaptation to climate change in selected countries of Western Europe and Poland relate to key issues mentioned in the strategic documents of the European Commission. In the United Kingdom the main emphasis is on the reduction of greenhouse gases as a form of preventive action, rather than adaptation to climate change. All strategies recognize the importance of raising public awareness about the negative effects of climate change and the importance of preparing adaptation measures, and stress the need to support the critical and most sensitive sectors of the European economy – forestry, agriculture and fisheries. The Polish strategy of adaptation to climate change does not deviate from the strategy of these countries of Western Europe, but it must be emphasized that this is only a document listing recommendations on the scope of operations of adaptation to climate change. Its realization is a separate issue.

Lacustrine deposits from Ortel Królewski II (Eastern Poland) represent the Holsteinian Interglacial (MIS 11c). They are characterized by an extremely rich occurrence of ostracod and mollusc fauna. Collected samples represent pre-optimal part of the Holsteinian Interglacial corresponding to Picea–Alnus, Taxus and Pinus–Larix zones. Based on ostracod assemblage analysis a depth of the paleolake, the energy of the environment and the average January and July air temperature were reconstructed. Ostracods from Ortel Królewski II indicate a lake with possible periodic overflow surrounded by periodically flooded grasslands, which existed in the study area during the pre-optimal part of Holsteinian Interglacial.

The study examined factors influencing the choice of climate change adaptation strategies among rural farming households in Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria. A total of 115 rural farmers constitute the sample size for this study. Descriptive and relevant inferential statistics such as multivariate probit model were used. The perceived effects of climate change in the study area were erosion/flooding, increase in rainfall, scarce of resources, increase in temperature, and increase in pest and disease infestation. The major adaptation strategies adopted by the  farmers in the study area were change in planting date (72.17%), change in harvesting date (67.83%), construction of drainage around homes/farms  (67.83%), income diversification (64.35%), and planting cover crops (58.26%). The result of the factors influencing choice of adaptation showed that gender, age, years of farming experience, access to credit, and training on climate change were the factors that influenced the choice of adaptation strategies in the study area. The major constraints to adoption of adaptation strategies in the study area were identified. The study concluded that selected socio-economic characteristics influenced the choice of rural farmers` adaptation strategies utilized in the study area. Government policies should be sensitive to support of trainings on climate change, education, credit access, farm size and household size

Rozwój zrównoważony łączy wyzwania środowiskowe z równością społeczną i dobrobytem ekonomicznym. Analogicznie, problematyka zmian klimatycznych integruje kwestie środowiskowe i społeczno-ekonomiczne.
There is an unquestionable need to integrate issues of climate change and sustainable development. It is done by implementing of projects aimed at achieving environmental and social objectives. In the article the analysis of selected national and international climate projects carried out in partnership is presented. Analyzed examples confirm the real possibility of setting a partnership in order to carry out such initiatives.

The water retention capacity of a territory is mainly defined by the land conditions, type of soil cover and manner of land management. The manifestations of the climate change reflect the need for better water capture from precipitation in agricultural catchment areas. The effect of the soil cover on the water retention capacity was studied in two localities with different soil types (chernozem and cambisol). The results have shown significant effects of permanent grass covers on increasing the water retention capacity. The mean retention capacity measured at permanent grass covers was 1.7-fold higher than at arable land. The soil type did not play a significant role. To some extent, the retention capacity is also influenced by the used agro-technology. After stubble-tillage, the water from precipitation was better infiltrated by arable land than by permanent grass cover. However, during a major part of the vegetation period, arable land is at the rest, and the short-term increase of its retention capacity has no impact on the overall outcome.

Uwzględnienie oczekiwanych zmian klimatu w dokumentach strategicznych rozwoju miasta w dłuższym horyzoncie czasowym powinno polegać na modernizacji sieci kanalizacyjnej, racjonalizacji zużycia wody, rozbudowie infrastruktury błękitno-zielonej, wprowadzaniu rozwiązań przyjaznych środowisku w ogrzewaniu i transporcie. W dziedzinie społecznej niezbędne jest zapewnienie klimatyzacji w okresie letnim w obiektach usług publicznych – ochrony zdrowia i edukacji.
The work aimed at assessing sensitivity to climate change of town of Kalisz to provide basis for urban adaptation strategy. The assessment was based on climatic, socio-economic and environmental data as well as on spatial management information. It was found that Kalisz are most sensitive to heat waves, floods, droughts and to air pollution. Groups of people most sensitive to heat waves (children and elderly people) which constitute almost 25% of the urban population, reside mainly in midtown areas and inhabit blocks of flats where thermal comfort parameters are disadvantageous for city dwellers. Nearly 1% of the town population lives within the reach of a 100-year flood water, while more than 4% live within the reach of a 500-year water. Floods also threat to a part of water intake installations. The town is prone to flush flooding which tend to occur here with increased frequency. The town depends on infiltrative intakes of quaternary water, it potentially makes Kalisz sensitive to droughts under condition of decreased precipitation and excessive exploitation of groundwater. The planned expansion of urban development onto windward open areas will block city ventilating channels what worsted air conditions in the city. Vital issues to be tackled include in urban strategies: upgrading of sewer system, water use rationalization, extension of blue-green infrastructure and introduction of environmentally friendly solutions in heat provision and city transportation systems.

The aim of this paper was to determine the mechanisms of climate change impact on the yield of the main exportoriented crops in the agro-climatic zones of Ukraine. The study of the problem of changing the acreage of the main export-oriented crops was conducted according to the data of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine on the time horizon 2000-2018 in the following order: first, the dynamics of the change of the acreage under corn, sunflower and wheat by the agro-climatic zones of Ukraine was analyzed; secondly, the trends of yield changes of these crops were investigated based on the increase in the difference in yields between the northern and southern zones; and, finally, the temporal and spatial expansion in the area of crop propagation were investigated by applying the panel regression method. The findings obtained indicate that the applied models confirm the assumption of the effects of climate change on crop yield changes and the zones expansion in the northern direction. If the country’s wheat area can be considered stable (variation is insignificant), then the corn and sunflower areas have grown steadily under the influence of increasing demand from national and world markets. At the same time, the growing acreage under corn and sunflower occurred in all climatic zones. Stable expansion of corn crops in the north direction in all three agroclimatic zones of Ukraine has been statistically confirmed. The article presents the findings of empirical analysis, which confirm that if the boundaries of soil and climatic zones change, the conditions of growing crops and their yield will consequently change as well. Thus, based on current global forecasts, the impact of weather on Ukraine’s agriculture will increase, and the most negative effects can be expected in the Steppe zone, where the likelihood of weather and climate risks increases, requiring the development of adaptation and mitigation measures as well as exploitation of new potential opportunities that are being opened. Studies have shown that there is an expansion in crops to the north and a change in their pattern, including a significant increase in the area under corn.

It is accompanied by massive changes in life support systems on Earth, where its far‑reaching effects will be felt in the upcoming decades. The development of a national adaptation policy (strategy and/or plan) serves as an instrument that provides the necessary framework for adaptation by coordinating the consideration of climate change across relevant sectors, geographical scales, and levels of decision making. The purpose of this paper is to compare the degree of influence of climate change on the economy of the Eastern European Union and compare national strategies for adaptation to climate change in selected countries of Western Europe and Poland. The study shows that countries bearing the brunt of the negative impacts of climate change are Cyprus, Malta, Bulgaria and Poland. These countries recorded the highest climate change index, the greatest losses in terms of estimated GDP, household welfare, land losses, and lower incomes in the agricultural and tourism sectors. With appropriate adaptation measures, countries such as Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia can take advantage of the future changes in weather conditions. A shift in the productivity of the agricultural sector and tourism from south to north can be noted.

Opis:
A fragment of the middle terrace in the VistulaRivervalley, nearby the railway station in Kraków, is formed by fluvial channel and overbank deposits of the PrądnikRiver, which bear a record of various environments affected by changing climatic conditions. The sedimentary succession includes two complexes that differ in lithofacies. The older complex comprises fining-upward deposits (channel sand and gravelly sand with medium- and large-scale trough cross-stratification) and, less frequently, sand with planar cross-stratification overlain by silt with intercalations of biogenic deposits of abandoned channels. Vegetation accompanying the deposition of biogenic layers was typical of boreal coniferous forests, dominated by Pinus sylvestris with a small admixture of Larix, Pinus cembra, Picea, Betula, and Populus. Periodically, the landscape passed into open areas overgrown by woody tundra. The complex developed as a result of activity of a meandering river under conditions of a moderately cool climate. The younger complex includes the sand lithofacies with horizontal stratification and low-angle cross-stratification, overlain by alternating sands and silts. The topmost part is represented by sands with large- and medium scale planar cross stratification. Lack of biogenic deposits and considerable amount of frosted quartz grains in alluvial sediments indicate aeolian processes of greater intensity, periglacial conditions and evolution towards a braided or transitional river. Pollen successions, absolute dating and studies of structural and textural features of the sediment suggest that the time of its deposition may be estimated at a range between the close of the Eemian Interglacial and the Weichselian Middle Pleniglacial (OIS 5e–OIS 3).

Results of the analysis proved that the net primary productivity has a strong connection with the solar insolation. The length of daylight and the level of solar radiation are the driving forces behind changes in growth of primary products, as floral forms are among the first indicators of changes in ecosystems due to global warming. The group of climatic components that have a moderate connection with the bioproductivity of ecosystems of the Polissya are derivatives of bioclimatic indicators related to air temperature, including annual temperature, seasonality, minimum temperature of the coldest month, and the average temperature of the coldest quarter. Seasonality and the annual variation of temperature affect bioproductive processes inversely: the productivity decreases with the increased temperature range between the warmest and the coldest periods of the year and in the middle of quarters.

Since the trends of adverse climate change and integrated urban water management have continued in the twenty-first century, governments and other institutions seek reliable predictions as water resource requirements arise. Although uncertainty is never cut off from the need for a probabilistic movement, through current developments in science and the technology of hydrological modeling on urban water management analysis, researchers can improve the ability to create realistic scenarios that will benefit the water sector it adapts to these changes. Model studies on the combined effects of climate change and the water sector have found that the change can be significant, depending on scenarios and the assumptions of climate change, as well as the degree of urban development. In this work, conceptual analysis of urban water management has been applied to several scenarios of climate change in order to obtain new insights and uncertainties.

The main objective of this article was to determine thermal conditions in the Christmas period and the impact of atmospheric circulation on their formation. The article is based on data on the mean daily air temperature for 16 stations in Poland for the 1966-2014 multiannual period. In this period, no statistically significant changes of air temperature were observed, neither in December, nor the Christmas period. The occurrence of averagely warmer holidays was associated with the inflow of maritime polar air masses from the western sector, while colder holidays occurred with the inflow of continental polar air masses from the eastern sector.

Since China’s environmental policy is defined as top-down “authoritarian environmentalism”, political propaganda and media censorship heavily affect the communication of climate change. Hence, conducting an investigation of climate change communication in the context of China is a valuable exercise. This article uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate how the Chinese Press reported on, and discursively constructed climate change through the employment of a series of discursive strategies, over a 20-year period, 2000-2020. The findings indicate that news reporting on climate change was in consistent alignment with the ruling Communist Party’s environmental policies during these two decades, facilitating the consolidation of the government’s hegemony.

The BONUS MIRACLE project focuses on understanding the of the impact of climate change on water environments, including it’s affects on hydrological regimes and nutrient concentrations. The overall objective of MIRACLE is to initiate a social learning process in collaboration with stakeholders, that can identify new configurations for governance (conceptual, institutional, and practice based) in order to reduce nutrient enrichment and flood risk in the Baltic Sea region. These configurations should be understood as new solutions to protect water resources, ecosystem services and provide win-win solutions. To achieve this environmental modelling of the Reda catchment, Poland, is used as a pilot study for the project. Mathematical models which specified the detailed processes associated with water cycles, including determining interconnections and quantifying variables characteristic to the assessment of the water resource quantity and quality, were found to be useful. Due to the complexity of some models, launching, entering the appropriate data in the correct formats and calibrating the models proved to be challenging. Future developments in the water management sector should concentrate on specific local catchment areas where the application of integrated water resource management principles and the adaptation to climate change are more easily merged with local spatial planning. However, a larger number and higher frequency of measurements would be required.

There is a growing bulk of studies on global climate changes and conflicts. It has been argued that climate change may be a triggering factor to conflicts and wars, especially in societies with poor governance. This study explores the climate-security nexus in Africa. It is argued that the global climate change provides profound state and human security challenges to African governments and people. Scarcity of vital resources in food, water, sanitation and health has challenged political and economic structures, infrastructure and integration. This has also been due to poorly governed states with authoritarianism, corruption, ethnic divisions and fragile, dysfunctional institutions. The war in Darfur is a tragic, but illustrative example of the climate change-security nexus of our time.

The increasing risk of wind erosion in the context of climate change represents a highly pressing issue. This increase is a result of the growing occurrence of droughts and elevated temperatures in the intensively farmed areas. Effective protection against the wind erosion can be provided by windbreaks, especially during the period when the soil is not protected by the vegetation cover of crops. In this report, the authors wanted to compare the methods defining the windbreak protection zones. The optical porosity and the windbreak height were the basic parameters for defining the protection area. The various methods differ among themselves by using the windbreak height parameter or not. The optical porosity of the windbreaks was determined based on photographic documentation. For the comparison, the cadastral area of Micmanice was selected due to the wide network of windbreaks in this locality. A database of windbreak height and optical porosity for each windbreak was set up. Our report thus presents the application of the new knowledge aimed at updating the methods and procedures for assessing the vulnerability of the area by wind erosion. The application of the method involving the optical porosity and windbreak height parameters resulted in a significant reduction of the windbreak protection zone compared to the method omitting the windbreak height.

The British Climate Change Act created the world’s first long-term institutional and legal system aimed at reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions. Following its 2019 amendment, the UK also became the first G7 and G20 country to commit to climate neutrality. The Act, described as one of the most advanced legal acts in the field of climate policy, is still a reference point and source of inspiration for many countries around the world. The model established by it, however, struggles with the credible commitment problem, and the structural problems arising, inter alia, from the aforementioned amendment and the departure of the UK from the European Union may in the future additionally weaken its credibility and have a negative impact not only on British but also on global climate action. The aim of this article is to present the main elements of the British model of climate policy and to signal future challenges to its credibility against the background of the previous experience with the implementation of the Act and the latest emissions reduction targets announced at the end of 2020 and in the first half of 2021.

Opis:
Climate change and its negative consequences represent a common problem for all the people on Earth and are likely to become one of the most serious challenges that humankind faces. As such, mitigation measures and adaptation actions are of particular importance. Although often thought as the two sides of the same coin, the climate change mitigation and adaptation differ from each other, especially in the context of indigenous peoples. Therefore, the first part of the paper centres on the relation between climate change mitigation and adaptation and their consequences for indigenous communities. The newest international treaty on climate change, the Paris Agreement, establishes the global goal on adaptation, which should take into consideration vulnerable groups, communities and ecosystems, and more importantly, should be based on and guided by the best available science and knowledge of indigenous peoples, often referred to as ‘traditional knowledge’. As such, the second part of the paper focuses on the adaptation methods guided by the traditional knowledge. Although examples include indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge from all over the globe, much attention is given to the Arctic Indigenous Peoples as, due to current speed of climate change, the Arctic is recognized as a global climate change hotspot. Although indigenous peoples have been living in their territories since the time immemorial, adapting their ways of life to the difficult weather and environmental conditions, with the current climate change happening so rapidly, their possibilities of adaptation are weakening and climate change renders them more vulnerable, altering their economic and cultural activities and threatening their very existence. However, the current rate of climate change is not the only factor impairing the indigenous peoples’ adaptive capacities. Therefore, the final part of the paper is aimed at presenting what the obstacles to the successful adaptation to climate change are and whether migration should be considered an adaptive action.

Protection of air and groundwater as an adaptation to climate change is currently one of the main economic and social challenges at both the global, national, regional and local levels. This is confirmed by the author's review of the literature in this area. Higher wealth of Polish municipalities is not always consistent with greater municipal involvement in environmental protection and its results, which requires deeper analysis. Factors such as the nature of municipalities and the natural conditions of municipalities due to their spatial location are also important. The subject of this article's research is a comparative analysis (based on detailed indicators of environmental governance of the Central Statistical Office (CSO)) of the degree of involvement of 30 Polish municipalities of varying wealth in air and groundwater protection, as well as a comparison of their natural conditions in terms of forest cover and biodiversity, which should promote better adaptation to climate change at the local level.

Od 1959 do 2000 r. otoczenie stacji meteorologicznej Zakładu Meteorologii i Klimatologii SGGW ulegało przemianom. Do końca lat 60.
The paper presents a study on climate changes in the local scale of Warsaw district Ursynów in the period 1960-2000. Original long-term meteorological records were used as material for the analysis. Meteorological station Ursynów was situated in the south of Warsaw in a place being now inside the University campus. During the period 1960-2000 the nearest surrounding of the station changed from typical rural area to the large city suburb as a result of housing estate and University campus development. The paper presents results of time series analysis of main meteorological elements: mean air temperature, extreme temperatures, humidity and precipitation. Long-term average values of considered meteorological elements changed and the character of changes indicates that surrounding area's development affected local climate.

The paper presents basic information concerning bioclimatic conditions in Łódź based on the Tourism Climate Index (TCI). The index makes it possible to assess in a comprehensive manner, based on specified meteorological parameters, the climatic conditions affecting the development of tourism. The study uses measurements from the weather station, Łódź-Lublinek, taken in the years 1966-2014. The TCI values have a distinct annual pattern with the highest values recorded in summer. The summer season has the highest frequency of days with ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ conditions for tourism. An assessment of the variability of bioclimatic conditions indicates an increase in the number of days with high TCI values pointing to ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ conditions for tourism and recreation.

The Chukchi Sea was sampled in August of 2011, a year of near-normal sea ice among recent years, and again in August 2012, a year of all time record low sea ice. We exploited this sampling to test the hypothesis that different sea ice conditions are associated with differences in abundances or species composition of microzooplankton through an examination of tintinnids and radiolarians. From 18 stations in 2011, and 19 stations in 2012, organisms were enumerated in plankton net tow material, and chlorophyll determinations made (total and ≤ 20 μm) from discrete depth samples. We found that the low sea ice conditions of 2012 were associated with higher chlorophyll concentrations (both total and the ≤ 20 μm size fraction), compared to 2011. However, tintinnid ciliates and radiolarians were much lower in concentration, by about an order of magnitude, compared to 2011. In both years the radiolarian assemblage was dominated by Amphiselma setosa. The species composition of the tintinnid ciliates was similar in the two years, but there were distinct differences in the relative abundances of certain species. The 2012, low sea ice assemblage, was dominated by small forms in contrast to 2011, when large species were the most abundant. We present these findings in detail and discuss possible explanations for the apparent differences in the microzooplankton communities associated with distinct sea ice conditions in the Chukchi Sea.

Global warming observed nowadays causes an increase in geomorphic activity in polar regions. Within the areas influenced by cold climatic conditions, relief dynamics and vegetation development are the main landscape shaping processes. The study is limited to the Ebba Valley (78°43’N; 16°37’E) in central Spitsbergen (Svalbard), where geomorphologic observations and vegetation sampling were conducted in 2007. The valley was divided into three zones differentiated by dominating geomorphic activity and stability of deposits. The settlement and the evolution of plant cover have been documented there. The main factors that control well developed vegetation cover within raised marine terraces are frost heave and solifluction. In deeper parts of the valley, aeolian processes dominate and high differentiation of microsite conditions causes high variability in plant coverage. The area close to the Ebba glacier marginal zone is characterized by initial stages of plant colonisation where disturbance to vegetation is mainly caused by hydrological processes.

Climate change constitutes a major threat to environment and agriculture in developing countries. The study was, therefore, conducted to assess the socioeconomic characteristics of farmers’ perception of agroforestry as climate change mitigation strategy, and to determine the factors influencing agroforestry adoption as climate change mitigation strategy in the study area. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 300 respondents, out of which information from 299 respondents were suitable for analysis. Data were collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and were analysed with the aid of descriptive statistics and probit modeling. Data were collected on socioeconomic characteristics of respondents and farmers’ perception of climate elements and agroforestry techniques in mitigating climate change. Results of analysis showed that farmers were in their active ages and are mostly married. Farmers also perceived that temperature and sunshine hour were on the increase, while they also perceived that agroforestry is soil fertility enhancing. Probit analysis showed that perceived soil fertility enhancement of the technology (p≤0.10), perceived drought controlling capacity of the technology (p≤0.05), farm size (p≤0.01) and membership of association (p≤0.10) were positive determinants of farmers’ adoption of agroforestry as climate change mitigation strategy in the area. The paper concludes that farmers should be encouraged to belong to farming associations, and should be educated on the importance of agroforestry in fertility enhancement and drought control.

Studies associated with climate change and variability are of great importance at both the global and local scale in the global climate crisis. In this study, change-point detection and trend analysis were carried out on mean, maximum, minimum air temperatures and total precipitation based on monthly, seasonal and annual scale in Bartın province located in the western Black Sea Region of Turkey. For this aim, 4-different homogeneity tests (von Neumann test, Pettitt test, Buishand range test and standard normal homogeneity test) for changepoint detection, Modified Mann–Kendall test and Şen’s innovative trend test for trend analysis, and Sen’s slope test for the magnitude estimation of trends were used. According to the test results, the summer temperatures in particular show increasing trends at the 0.001 significance level. Mean maximum temperature in August, mean minimum temperature in June and August, and mean temperature in July and August are in increasing trend at the 0.001 significance level. Over a 51 year period (1965–2015) in Bartın province, the highest rate of change per decade in air temperatures is in August (0.55°C for Tmax, 0.46°C for Tmin and 0.43°C for Tmean) based on Sen’s slope. However, the study showed that apart from October precipitation, there is no significant trend in monthly, seasonal and annual precipitation in Bartın. Increasing trends in mentioned climate variables are also visually very clear and strong in Şen’s innovative trend method, and they comply with the statistical results. As a result, the study revealed some evidence that temperatures will increase in the future in Bartın and its environs.

Considerable climate changes have been observed in the last 50 years – warming in every spatial scale (global, continental, regional and local), changes in atmospheric precipitation and several weather extremes, shrinking of cryosphere and sea level rise. The warming since the mid-20th century has predominantly been due to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, in particular the combustion of fossil fuels, farming and other changes in land use. The paper presents the aspects of impact of climate change for farming and food security and the impact of farming for climate change in Polish and global scale. Agriculture holds a meaningful potential of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and of carbon sequestration. It will be necessary to manage optimally advantageous changes and effectively adapt to adverse changes.

This study evaluates the influence of repeated artificial drought stress on the fine root charac- teristics – including ectomycorrhizae – of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst]. The experimental site consisted of two plots in a mature spruce monoculture stand. The water regime at parts of both plots was regulated by shelters and an isolation trench during vegetation season (spring to autumn) since 2010. Root samples were collected during autumn in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Root analyses revealed the effect of drought stress on mycorrhizal root tips changed over time. While a density of active mycorrhizae was about 34% lower in drought-stressed areas compared to nonstressed (control) areas in 2010, it increased by 15% in 2012 and by 22% in 2013 over both plots. We observed the less pronounced effect of drought on a proportion of active mycorrhizae, but it generally followed the pattern of active mycorrhizae density. The density of nonactive mycorrhizae was not influenced by drought but significantly fluctuated during the course of the experiment. Other root characteristics such as the dry mass of fine roots (< 1 mm), the specific length of fine roots (< 1 mm) and the composition of the ectomycorrhizal community (primarily dominated by Amphinema byssoides, Tylospora fibrillosa, Tylopilus felleus, and Cenococcum geophilum) were also not significantly influenced by drought. Our results indicate the ability of Norway spruce fine roots to com- pensate for repeated drought stress of the intermediate intensity.

The natural environment is being drastically affected by climate change. Under these severe environmental conditions, the growth and productivity of agricultural crops have reduced. Due to unpredictable rainfall, crops growing in the field are often exposed to waterlogging. This leads to significant crop damage and production losses. In this review paper, the morphological and physiological adaptations such as development of aerenchyma, adventitious roots, radial root oxygen loss barrier, and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of crops under waterlogging are discussed. This will help to understand the effects of waterlogging on various crops and their adaptation that promotes crop growth and productivity. To meet the food requirements of a growing population, the development of waterlogging tolerant crops by screening and plant breeding methods is necessary for plant breeders. Better knowledge of physiological mechanisms in response to waterlogging will facilitate the development of techniques and methods to improve tolerance in crops.

The positive dynamics of atmospheric precipitation and the long-term functioning of natural and technical systems for wastewater sludge treatment under the influence of excessive atmospheric moisture does not allow the treatment/drying of precipitation, which provokes soil pollution with subsequent diffusion of pollutants into groundwater, which leads to the degradation of the natural environment components interacting with drying beds. The article is devoted to the adaptation of the process of treatment/drying of wastewater sludge at drying beds. The method includes identification of the dynamics of climatic factors of a long-term chronological series, which makes it possible to predict the effect of atmospheric precipitation on the wastewater sludge drying. The costs for the implementation and subsequent use of the proposed method are absent or insignificant (in the conditions of an increase in usable area during the modernisation of existing drying beds) in comparison with the costs of well-known and widespread methods of deliquefaction.

Opis:
Water is becoming a scarce resource due to the immense intensification of agricultural activity, climate change, and demographic pressure. Hence, information on water use/management and their associated management practices is essential for selecting, planning, implementing, and monitoring schemes that optimise water use to meet the increasing demand related to basic human needs and welfare. This study presents the farmers’ perception of climate change from a gender sensitive perspective to promote adaptation and optimise irrigation/agricultural productivity in a compound surface-ground water system within the Anger sub-basin (Ethiopia). The study results showed that climate change affects water demand and supply routes in which more than 65% of the decrease in lake water level is due to climate change and overuse of surface water. The research findings show that women’s recognition and apprehension of climate change is much greater than men’s. Thus, women’s role in farming is important for ensuring food security at the household level. Gender sensitivity and can play a role in preventing the change in climate through optimising irrigation efficiency and suggesting the need for further research on its application to science. The study demonstrates that women’s participation in agricultural tasks, crisis management, and informal institutions is more vigorous than men’s. On the other hand, the understanding and communication of farmers is based on experience and concerns about the climate impact. Moreover, studies showed that climate change has a potential impact on the access to water supply for agriculture, urbanisation, and the environment. Therefore, there is a need to assess the dynamics of surface-groundwater interaction as affected by climate change and gender inequality to optimise the irrigation system.

Monitoring of progress in the implementation of the Paris Agreement as well as the Katowice Climate Package is not possible without conducting observations and measurements of the status of individual elements of the atmosphere and hydrosphere using a uniform methodology. These measurements in Poland are carried out by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute, which this year is celebrating its 100th anniversary, playing a role of the national hydrological and meteorological survey. Measurement data collected, processed and made available by IMGW-PIB improve the ability to identify and assess potential threats early by using modern tools to detect extreme weather events, and thus allow public authorities and the public to provide up-to-date data on the state of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, forecasts and warnings in both everyday and threat situations. The data collected and processed by the Institute are the basis for determining the level of achievement of the objectives of the Paris Agreement, but also for monitoring, forecasting and planning necessary actions in the territory of Poland. These activities, in order to ensure consistency and correctness of interpretation as well as planning activities implementing the Paris Agreement by recipients and users of forecasting systems all over the world, are carried out in cooperation with hydrological and meteorological survey and services within the World Meteorological Organization.

Global climate change is a fact that affects all components of the environment. The main aim of this research was to conduct the retrospective monitoring of soils in the Trans-Ural Steppe Zone (Russia) and the analysis in changing of key climatic parameters for the periods 1937-1982 and 1982-2019. We investigated average temperatures and precipitation (monthly and annual) using archived data from a nearby weather station, as well as data from NASA and weather forecast websites. We identified a decrease of soil fertility and an increase in alkalinisation processes over the past 37 years for the studied area. Comparison of these periods showed an increasing the average monthly and annual air temperatures (on 1.4°C) and a decrease in the amount of precipitation in the summer (on 4.4 mm) period. We found that a more arid climate accelerates the rate of soil salinization due to the active evaporation of groundwater. Nevertheless, in some areas there were found the soil desalinization due to the change in the hydrologic regime and lowering of the groundwater level. In general, the climate changing in the studied region is consistent with global warming trend. Increased average annual temperature and reduced precipitation in summer period contribute to aridization of the region. Such conditions will more restrict soil fertility due to development of salinization and desertification processes.

Opis:
The paper aims to identify factors under climate change conditions that could impact innovativeness in grapevine growing in Poland. It is shown that today the viticulture cultivation in Poland is of little economic significance. However, based on primary data applied to econometric model, it is argued that driven by climate changes as well as due to other factors, grapevine growing might become a significant branch of agriculture. The estimates of the model, although randomized, suggest that there is a significant probability that in Polish viticultural farms adaptation measures applied as a respond to these factors will result with implementation of innovations and through overall development.

Opis:
W latach 2010 i 2011 wystąpiło w Polsce kilka miesięcy o temperaturze poniżej średniej z wielolecia. Natomiast wielkość ocieplenia w następnych dziesięcioleciach będzie można ograniczyć poprzez skuteczną politykę ochrony klimatu, tzn. redukcję emisji gazów cieplarnianych i zwiększenie ich wiązania, podjęte odpowiednio wcześnie.
In the years 2010 i 2011, there have been several months in Poland with temperature below the long-term monthly mean. However, in the global scale, the year 2010 was record-warm and terminated the globally-warmest decade in the history of direct temperature observations. It was the 34-th consecutive year with global temperature exceeding the 20th century average. Global temperature has been growing for 40 years and since 1960s, each decade is warmer than the former one. However, changes are not regular in time and space - there is a strong natural variability superimposed on the growing trend. Climatic changes have occurred many times in the history of the Earth - there were many cooler periods interspersed with warmer periods. However, mechanisms of earlier climatic changes have been totally natural. Presently, it is very likely that the Earth climate warms up primarily due to anthropogenic increase of atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. Projections for the future foresee further, and more intense, global warming and this tendency is projected to last for at least several decades. In fact, temperature changes are accompanied with changes of all elements of the coupled systems of climate and water resources, and in consequnce - many physical, biological, and human (socio-economic) systems. Climate change impacts, both advantageous and disadvantageous, can be observed already, and are expected in the future, in all regions, sectors, and systems. They depend on the scenario of socio-economic development that drives the emissions of greenhouse gases, and on the climate change mitigation policy. Probability of severely adverse impacts grows with the level and rate of warming. It is estimated that for a larger warming, negative effects would dominate over positive effects. If human activity is responsible for the most part of the recent warming, we can try to restrict the warming in a longer perspective by changing the human behaviour. However, due to the inertia of the climate system, we cannot influence the climate of the nearest decade or two, so that the warming of 0.2 centigrade per decade is expected. The amplitude of warming in 2050-2100 can be restricted by an effective climate mitigation policy, i.e. reduction of emission of greenhouse gases and increase of carbon sequestration, undertaken sufficiently early. Without effctive climate policy, the global warming in the time horizon of the year 2100 will be much higher than the relatively safe increase by 2 centigrade above the pre-industrial temperature. People have already adapted to the existing climate, hence every change of climate requires adaptation to new conditions and generates costs. In Poland, climate change bring opportunities, such as higher, hence more enjoyable water temperature in the Baltic Sea, and in winter - lower morbidity and mortality, and savings on heating. However, there are also threats: increase of frequency of heat waves, intense precipitation, floods and landslides, but also droughts in vegetation seasons, strong winds, and sea level rise. All in all, Poland will not be a big looser in the changing climate, even if problems with temporary deficits or destructive abundance of water can become more severe. It is necessary to benefit of positive changes and to adapt to negative changes. Prudence and diplomatic skills are needed in negotiations with the European Union. The obligations on the Polish contribution to climate mitigation cannot inacceptable delay the socio-economic development. Our country "sits on coal", hence the perspective of high tax on emission of carbon dioxide and the threat of carbon leakage, and in consequence loss of jobs in Poland to countries that do not partake in the global climate policy can be reasons for concern. It would be inacceptable that in Poland the cure is worse than the disease. However, our knowledge about future conditions is very limited and loaded with a considerable uncertainty.

Urban climate and its impact on the thermal comfort of residents are significant aspects in urban planning and the design of housing estates. The aim of this article is to investigate the temperature perception among residents in a contemporary residential area in Lublin during the hottest day, utilising an advanced computer simulation tool – the ENVI-met programme. A modern, densely built housing estate with no significant greenery was selected as a case study. General meteorological and spatial data were used for calibrating the housing estate model within the software. The housing estate model within the programme was calibrated using publicly available meteorological and spatial data, and computer simulations were conducted for Lublin's hottest day on 22 July 2022. Based on these simulations, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) was calculated. The research results indicate that people experience moderate thermal stress in unshaded areas only at 4:00 pm, while in sunny locations, they experience strong to very strong heat stress throughout the day. This article underscores the importance of computer simulations in analysing the urban microclimate and provides insights into tools that can be used in urban planning and housing estate design processes, with the aim of creating more comfortable and environmentally friendly urban environments.

As the global human population continues to grow, the demand for food rises accordingly. Unfortunately, anthropogenic activities, climate change, and the release of gases from the utilization of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are causing detrimental effects on sustainable food production and agroecosystems. Despite these challenges, there remain underutilized opportunities for sustainable food production. This review discusses the advantages and benefits of utilizing microbes in food production. Microbes can be used as alternative food sources to directly supply nutrients for both humans and livestock. Additionally, microbes offer higher flexibility and diversity in facilitating crop productivity and agri-food production. Microbes function as natural nitrogen fixators, mineral solubilizers, nano-mineral synthesizers, and plant growth regulator inducers, all of which promote plant growth. They are also active organisms in degrading organic materials and remediating heavy metals and pollution in soils, as well as soil-water binders. In addition, microbes that occupy the plant rhizosphere release biochemicals that have nontoxic effects on the host and the environment. These biochemicals could act as biocides in controlling agricultural pests, pathogens, and diseases. Therefore, it is important to consider the use of microbes for sustainable food production.

Over the last few years, global temperature has increased rapidly and continuously at around 0.2 °C per decade. Climate change is expected to have considerable impacts on natural resource systems, which, in turn, can lead to instability and conflict, displacement of people and changes in occupancy and migration patterns. Rise in atmospheric temperature due to climate change will lead to loss of glaciers in the Himalayas, which, in turn, may reduce water availability in the rivers of Indus – Ganga plains, especially in dry seasons. The response of hydrological systems, erosion processes and sedimentation in the Himalayan region could alter significantly due to climate change. During the twentieth century, majority of the Himalayan glaciers have shown recession in their frontal parts, besides thinning of the ice mass. Retreat in glaciers can destabilize surrounding slopes and may give rise to catastrophic landslides and floods. The melting of ice is changing the hydrological cycles and is also affecting the ocean currents. Many of India’s coastal aquifers are already experiencing salinity ingress including Saurashtra coast in Gujarat and Minjur aquifer in Tamil Nadu. Increasing frequency and intensity of droughts in the catchment area will lead to more serious and frequent salt-water intrusion in the estuary and thus can deteriorate surface and groundwater quality and agricultural productivity. A warmer climate will change the patterns of hydrological cycle, which, in turn, can alter the intensity and timing of rainfall. Mahi, Pennar, Sabarmati and Tapi rivers will face water shortage conditions in response to climate change. River basins belonging to Godavari, Brahmani and Mahanadi may not face water shortages, but severity of flood shall increase in these areas. In future, there will be a net reduction of groundwater recharge and greater summer soil moisture deficits because higher temperature can shorten the duration of recharge seasons. Production of rice, maize and wheat in the past few decades has declined in many parts of Asia due to water shortage. Linking the concept of sustainable development to climate change can provide a deep insight into the proper methods of long term societal responses to global environmental change.

The agricultural and environmental sectors are plagued with challenges. In agriculture, soil infertility and the subsequent quagmire of poor crop yield, has always been a major problem that limits worldwide agricultural productivity. Major environmental concerns, including Climate Change and Soil Pollution, are receiving continual attention from key stakeholders. Efforts are hence being directed at curtailing or mitigating the devastative consequences of these man-made ‘monsters’. Recently, agricultural and environmental research reveals biochar to be a veritable technology that could be used to deal with some of these concerns. Biochar has the ability to have impact upon important soil properties, such as the raising of soil pH and water holding capacity, the attraction of beneficial fungi and microbes, improvement of cation exchange capacity (CEC), induce high carbon sequestration ability and nutrient retention capacity. Moreover, its large surface area makes it a potential remedy to several identified challenges. This review, therefore, critically highlights the importance of biochar, as well as the various ways of harnessing biochar technology towards global food security and environmental sustainability.

Opis:
This study tried to assess the impact of climate change on water resources of the upper Awash River sub-basin (Ethiopia) using a statistical downscaling model (SDSM). The future climatic parameters (rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures) were generated by downscaling outputs of HadCM3 (Hadley Centre Coupled Model, version 3) general circulation model to watershed level for A2a (medium-high) and B2a (medium-low) emission scenarios at representative stations (Addis Ababa, Ginchi and Bishoftu). These SDSM generated climatic data were used to develop current/baseline period (1971-2010) and future climate change scenarios: 2020s (2011-2040), 2050s (2041-2070) and 2080s (2071-2099). The projected future rainfall and mean monthly potential evapotranspiration at these stations were weighted and fed to HBV hydrological model (Hydrologiska Byråns Vattenbalansavdelning model) for future stream flow simulation. These simulated future daily flow time series were processed to monthly, seasonal and annual time scales and the values were compared with that of base period for impact assessment. The simulation result revealed the possibility for significant mean flow reductions in the future during Summer or “Kiremt” (main rainy season) and apparent increase during “Belg” or winter (dry season). Autumn flow volume showed decreasing trend (2020s), but demonstrated increasing trend at 2050s and 2080s. A mean annual flow reduction (ranging from 13.0 to 29.4%) is also expected in the future for the three studied benchmark periods under both emission scenarios. Generally, the result signals that the water resources of upper Awash River basin will be expected to be severely affected by the changing climate. Therefore, different adaptation options should be carried out in order to reduce the likely impact and ensure water security in the sub-basin.

The article shows the importance of religious and ethical approaches to climate change. Since early 70s we know that ecological crisis can’t be solved only by technical means. In current climate debate we hear not only voices of government leaders and business representatives. We see that in the debate are involved also scientists, philosophers, NGO representatives, writers, and … religious leaders. Consequences of decision that will be made on the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009 have religious and ethical perspectives and the debate must be enriched with these dimensions. Religion and ethics bring values to the climate debate which have the needed potential to affect politicians to make right decisions and ordinary people to change their live style.

Purpose – The aim of the study was to identify the differences in the vulnerability of Polish voivod-ships to climate change, which may pose a threat to the sustainable development of particular regions. Research method – To achieve the purpose of the research, for each voivodship, a Synthetic Measure of Socioeconomic Vulnerability to Climate Change (SMSEVCC) was calculated. The SMSEVCC was applied in the linear ordering of objects characterized by several diagnostic variables, which were later replaced by one diagnostic value. Results – The implementation of sustainable development in Poland is strongly determined by cli-mate change and the associated extreme weather phenomena. The risk varies regionally and depends on the natural vulnerability of a given area that results from environmental conditions and the level of socioeconomic development. Originality /value / implications / recommendations –The paper presents a comprehensive analysis, eva-luation of socioeconomic vulnerability of voivodeships in Poland to climate change. Progress in the im-plementation of sustainable development requires strengthening adaptation measures to climate change, which should be adapted to the specifics of individual regions. An important element of actions for sustainable development should be the increased importance of the economic insurance system.

Climate change continues to threaten humanity’s livelihoods, particularly those dependent on agriculture. Gradual changes in climate pose a significant threat to food security and sustainable agricultural productivity around the globe. This paper sought to investigate the influence of climate change knowledge on the selection of indigenous climate change adaptive strategies. The study was conducted in Vhembe district of Limpopo province, South Africa, in 2021. Structured questionnaires were administered to 300 emerging cash crop farmers during face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics were used to gain insight into the farmers’ knowledge of climate change. A multinomial logistic model was used to determine the influence of climate change knowledge on the selection of indigenous adaptation strategies. The study discovered that most farmers were aware of climate change and subsequently preferred crop diversification and substitution of crops as their ideal adaptation strategies. This study recommends that adaptation to climate change should be a collaborative effort among the farming community.

Opis:
A comprehensive study was conducted to monitor the emission potential from solid waste landfilled in Jordan over a period of 292 days using an anaerobic lysimeter. A 30 kg waste sample reflecting the typical municipal solid waste (MSW) streams generated in Jordan was used to simulate the influence of climate on the emission potential of landfills located in semi-arid areas. The experimental results demonstrated that a significant amount of leachate and landfill gas was produced. The methane content was found to be more than 45% and the leachate produced reached 15.7 l after 200 days. However, after 260 days the gas and leachate production rate became negligible. A significant amount of heavy metal traces was found in the leachate due to mixed waste disposal. Changes in biogas and leachate quality parameters in the lysimeter revealed typical landfill behaviour trends, the only difference being that they developed much more quickly. In view of current landfill practices in Jordan and the effect of climate change, the results suggest that landfill design and operational modes need to be adjusted in order to achieve sustainability. For this reason, optimized design parameters and operational scenarios for sustainable landfill based on the country’s climatic conditions and financial as well as technical potential are recommended as a primary reference for future landfills in Jordan as well as in similar regions and climates.

Opis:
In the current decade, the fact that climate change is a continuous process and that humans have been contributing to this change is indisputable. Therefore, the whole society and the decision-makers who guide the process of application of regional policy principles, are facing a challenge as to which measures need to be taken to minimise the consequences of this change. Although we live in a global world, it can be observed that interactions occur in each unit on an individual basis. As we have more and more knowledge and information on the space, we can indicate which units, regions and spaces have the greatest predisposition to be subject to climate change. Moreover, being aware of the level of risk, we can attempt to implement tools that will help society to accept climate change and properly adapt to it. A space’s predisposition to climate change is not only determined by the weather, environmental or geographical conditions. The literature on the subject indicates three basic determinants of the predisposition, i.e. the exposure, vulnerability and the adaptive capacity. Only all of these elements grouped together can provide an answer to the question about a unit’s predisposition. The article focuses on the indices which represent all three determinants of the predisposition. It should be noted that depending on the availability of data and their aggregation, there is no possibility of using the same indices for all countries. This, however, does not prevent the performance of a uniform analysis for spaces included in the same statistics. The article presents a case study for agricultural land in the province of Warmia and Mazury. Using Ward’s method, four subregions with similar determinants of the predisposition to climate change were distinguished. Three subregions stand out, as two of them have a significant impact of exposure (S.1) and vulnerability (S.2), while the third subregion dominates in terms of adaptive capacity (S.4).

The global warming and subsequent climate change has seriously threatened the glaciers of the Hindukush Karakoram Himalaya (HKH) region. These glaciers provide water to more than 60% people of the 11 countries, including Pakistan. The capital city of Pakistan has witnessed unprecedented urbanisation, population increase, development of new townships and associated economic activities. These challenges, together with climate change, have created severe pressure on the water resources of the city. In this mixed mode research, including questionnaire survey of 20 questions was distributed among the residents of the city online through Google Form. The questions were related to the expected impact of climate change on the availability of water, measures for conservation of water etc. About 205 residents from various parts of the city with different demographic backgrounds responded. This was followed by Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) of the experts and the major challenges to the urban water security of Islamabad with special reference to climate change have been assessed. The research has revealed that the water resources of the city are highly unsustainable. The residents have high concerns about the availability and quality of water. The results have shown that there is a number of governance issues in water distribution systems of the city. There are no organized water conservation strategies employed by City Government. The lack of institutional and policy framework has further complicated the situation. Residents seem willing for metering of water for its conservation. Recommendations have been made to municipal authorities for rational water resource management of the city.

Women constitute one such social group. The article shows that they are disproportionately affected by one of the consequences of climate change, which is the more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events that can lead to natural disasters like floods or hurricanes. The purpose of the article is to show that women’s unequal economic status, as well as some cultural norms in certain regions of the world, increase women’s mortality during natural disasters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article, and conference talk, is to discuss climate change in the context of businesses where the focus is on businesses as a cause, victims, and solution to the climate change crisis. DESIGN/METHOD: This is a conceptual paper focusing on explaining some of the key concepts relevant to the framing of businesses as a cause, victims, and solution to the climate crisis using the so-called business-poverty framework in a new setting. RESULTS/FINDINGS: The findings suggest that the business-poverty framework is useful when framing the discussion around businesses as a cause, victims, and solutions to climate change, drawing the attention to supply of and demand for fossil fuels, negative actions of industry leaders, and superficial reporting in this regard. Furthermore, various risk factors were identified, namely physical, transitional, market, and policy risks, financial and talent-related risks, liability, litigation, and systemic risks. Opportunities to address the climate crisis proactively by businesses entail low-carbon investments, cost management and access to finance, innovation, behavioural, and organizational changes, reputational enhancement, talent attraction and retention, and supply chain resilience. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The originality is to employ a framework used to evaluate business operations concerning poverty in a new context, namely, to address various aspects of climate change business implications relevant to the cause, implication for, and solution to the situation.

Rice productivity and sustainability are threatened by both biotic and abiotic stresses, the effects of which can be further aggravated by dramatic changes in global climate. The most viable option for rice farmers is to use climate change adaptation practices. This study therefore investigated the determinants of use of climate change adaptation practices among rice farmers in Kebbi State, North-West, Nigeria. Data were collected from a sample of 279 farmers selected using a multistage sampling procedure. The results of the data analysis revealed that the farmers used improved rice varieties, intercropping, recommended rates of fertilizers and other chemicals as climate change adaptation practices among others. Education, climate change awareness, and extension contact significantly influenced the use of climate change adaptation practices among the farmers. Other determinants of use of climate change adaptation practices among the farmers were years of cooperative membership, affordability, farming experience, weather information and farm size. It was concluded that use of climate change adaptation practices was determined by socioeconomic, institutional and technological characteristics. It is recommended among others that government policy should be geared towards encouraging the farmers especially the younger ones to acquire more formal education, larger farmlands and more climate change awareness.

Climate change has been observed for many years, being a worlwide source of concern. Reoccuring droughts and changes in precipitation in some regions of the world prompted research into the influence of climate change on the drying up of water. The following study analyses the dependencies between climate change and the drying up of rivers. In the introduction a history of climate change is presented followed by an analysis of global water reasources: their availability, changes in precipitation and their causes and effects. The third chapter deals with the influence of the observed changes on the availability of freshwater in the world. The study ends with the conclusion that the impact of climate change on the drying up of water remains unclear, with the bigger problem being the impact of these changes on the reduction of the quality of water, a fact that may lead to many global problems.

Nature reserves are one of the most important measures in saving biodiversity, however, during the climate change, a real danger arises, that these territories would not be able to fulfill the objectives. In order to mitigate negative effects of climate change in protected areas it is necessary to create and apply management programs, based on future ecosystems needs. The main aim of presented study was to evaluate sensitivity of rare and vulnerable species to climate change in order to suggest measures for better management of nature reserves in the future. According to scientific literature, 12 biological and ecological plant characteristics determining sensitivity of species (limiting factors) have been detected. 73 plant species that are protected in Lithuanian reserves were evaluated qualitatively according to limiting factors of climate change. As the result, it was offered to apply additional protection measures to 47 species in the light of climate change. Groups of plant species that should be affected highly negatively or highly positively were identified. 16% of plant species protected in nature reserves were evaluated as very sensitive to climate change and the condition of these plants may worsen. On the other hand, 14 plant species were given as least sensitive to negative effects and future climate is more favorable to species growth and spread than the existing. The highest danger is predicted for Silene chlorantha (Willd.) Ehrh., and the best condition is predicted for Mentha longifolia (L.) Huds. Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soó. The study also gives recommendations for the protection of rare plants in the future. Different management measures are taken into account: mitigation of the direct effect of climate change (I), improvement of an existing level of rareness (II), respecting the relation to physical and biological environment (III), consideration of spread and geographical limits (IV). Three management intensity levels were suggested according to species sensitivity.

Horticulture and agriculture are sectors particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Most factors of agricultural production, including the length of the growing season, the amount and distribution of precipitation, the occurrence and timing of spring frosts, maximum and minimum temperatures, etc., are modified by the effects of climate change. At the same time, these sectors are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions: methane and nitrous oxide. Reducing this emission can be difficult, because it is permanently related to cultivation and breeding practices. Nevertheless, achieving climate neutrality and stopping climate change will not be possible without the participation of agriculture and horticulture in this process. The article presents: the challenges posed to agricultural production by the EU climate policy; the analysis of the Polish agricultural strategy in terms of its integration with the objectives of this policy; the proposed actions that should be implemented to ensure that Polish horticulture and agriculture can effectively participate in achieving climate neutrality; the results of research conducted among fruit growers from the Sandomierz region. The aim of the article is to discuss the challenges faced by Polish horticulture resulting from the EU climate policy and to present the results of research on the knowledge, awareness and opinions of a selected group of fruit growers concerning climate change and to assess their readiness to take action; 101 randomly selected fruit producers from the Sandomierz region participated in the study.

The energy consumption worldwide by the industrial sector is expected to keep increasing during the coming years; generating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as unwanted byproducts. For that reason, industrial facilities must take concrete initiatives in order to decouple their production growth from their CO2 emission generation in order to decrease their contributions to global warming. Concerned that this is a world-wide problem, Mexican maquiladoras have started several energy-efficiency initiatives. The aim of this article is to present significant results of a descriptive and analytical study that has been conducted into three maquiladoras located at northwestern Mexico of the first two stages of the Cleaner Production - Energy Efficiency program proposed by the United Nations Environment Programme. Findings reveal that, although electrical devices seem work efficiently, it is still possible to address energy waste. Additionally, attaching the energy-efficiency approach to the cleaner production framework was found a complicated task because, unlike emissions and toxic residues, energy inefficiencies are not easily visible, verifiable, or measurable.

The essence of the “strategic planning” is explored and the peculiarities of strategic planning in the agricultural sector are defined. Global climate change as a factor stimulating the formation of new approaches to strategic planning of agricultural development is considered, and the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector of Ukraine is evaluated. A predictive model of changes in the parameters of agricultural production under expected climate change conditions is constructed, and organizational, socio-economical and environmental components of the strategy of agricultural development are outlined and the conceptual bases for improvement of strategic planning for the development of the agricultural sector in the face of climate change are substantiated.

Opis:
Livestock are reared throughout the world, and are an important agricultural product in virtually every country. This animal production systems and climate change are inter-related via complex mechanisms. Animal production influences climate change by emitting greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. It is estimated to be the livestock sector is contributing a significant share of global GHG emissions, accounting for approximately two-thirds of direct agricultural emissions and about 14.5 percent of total human-induced emissions when supply chains are considered. Therefore, globally, there is an urgent need to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that cause climate change by at least 80 per cent in wealthy countries and to protect the biodiversity which underpins food production. Dietary manipulation, ionophores, bacteriocins, covered anaerobic digesters, awareness creation and intensifying research and development are among the applicable methane mitigation strategies. Moreover, research bodies are also organizing to deliver findings at an international level; which focuses on the identification and development of technologies and practices to increase food production without increasing green house gases emissions.

Opis:
Addressing global climate change brings up a number of priority issues. The fundamental issue is the definition of the participants in this process and the scope of their competencies and areas of responsibility. Practice shows that modern global challenges, which include global climate change, cannot be solved individually and in a straightforward manner without the involvement of all stakeholders and the general public. The article discusses actions aimed at adapting and mitigating the consequences of global climate challenges carried out by states and their alliances (as traditional international actors) and corporations and media (as new international actors). It is shown that today state political decisions on the adaptation to and mitigation of the consequences of global climate change are associated, in particular, with the transition to a low-carbon economy. At the same time, specific and effective climate policies are also being implemented by international corporations. Global media implement their own climate initiatives from one side and shape international public opinion regarding the climate challenge from the other side. The author concludes that, despite the active presence of the theme of global climate change in international and national political discourse, as well as in media and in the social and economic projects of corporations, the general attempts to resolve the issue can’t be considered as a well coordinated, and the results are not efficient enough.

Opis:
Uncertainties as to how the climate will change and how it will influence the necessities and trends of irrigation development lead to a number of serious questions to be answered in the near future. How irrigation and water systems will have to adapt to climate changes is a challenge that planners, designers and O&M services will have to cope with. It is widely accepted that air temperature in Poland will increase of 2-4°C, however a total yearly precipitation will not vary yet its pattern during the year may change towards higher in winter and lower in summer. Evapotranspiration and crop water demand may rise due to both an increase in temperature and duration of crop growth cycles. Three main factors are expected to exert an accelerating influence on the development of irrigation: increased frequency and intensity of droughts and long-lasting precipitation-free periods with the high insolation and high air temperatures resulting from climate change; the intensification of agricultural production (e.g. in horticulture, orchards, seed crops), being forced by both domestic and European free-market competition; the necessity of reaching high level of quality for the majority of agricultural products. To mitigate negative effects of climate change and extreme events, appropriate adaptation methods and adaptation strategies should be developed and implemented in existing irrigation and water control systems. A number of technological and organisational steps should be taken to improve operation, management, administration and decision making processes.

In the paper a general safety analytical model of complex technical system related to the climateweather change process in its operating area is defined. First, the system operation at climate-weather variable conditions is given. Additionally, the semi-Markov approach is used. Further, the safety model of the multistate system at climate-weather variable conditions is introduced. The notions of the conditional safety functions at the climate-weather particular states, the unconditional safety function and the risk function of the complex system at changing in time climate-weather conditions are presented. The other safety indices like mean lifetime up to the exceeding a critical safety state, the moment when the risk function value exceeds the acceptable safety level, the intensities of ageing of the critical infrastructure and its components and the coefficients of the climate-weather impact on the critical infrastructure and its components intensities of ageing are defined.

Opis:
In this paper, the long-term variability of global solar radiation in the agricultural area of Lower Silesia is analyzed based on a 56-year long (1961-2016) measurement series recorded at the Agro- and Hydro-meteorological Wrocław-Swojec Observatory (SW Poland). Yearly and monthly global radiation sums with their extreme and mean values were compared with radiation data from Warsaw (Central Poland) and Potsdam (East Germany). The dynamics of variability between consecutive months, seasons and years was also taken into account. The conducted positive trends show a significant increase in the investigated global radiation sums for Lower Silesia and also for Central Poland and the eastern part of Germany. The trends are strongly related to long-term macro-circulation changes in the North Hemisphere, particularly with the phases and sub-phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The relations between the investigated values of global solar radiation and these macro-circulation patterns are very complicated and they very often have an asynchronous character. The first, juvenile stage of the NAO positive phase (the 1970s and 1980s), when annual sums of global solar radiation in Wrocław-Swojec reached only the average level of about 3700 MJ·m-2 and warm half-year about 2800 MJ·m-2 respectively, was cloudy and rainy. This period was distinctly different than the advanced stage of one (the 1990’s and later years) with bigger sunshine duration and smaller annual precipitation, when the adequate radiation sums amount to 3 900-4000 MJ·m-2 and 3 000-3 100 MJ·m-2 respectively.

The paper investigates the relations between Schwartz’s values and beliefs which may reflect skepticism toward science – specifically vaccine rejection, climate change denial and creationism. Recent research on the causes of anti-science indicates that they may be motivational, pertaining to ideologies, worldviews, and one’s moral codes. Therefore, we postulated that value priority hierarchies hierarchies may be predictors of anti-science. Results (N = 509) indicated that Conservation metatype values were positively associated with anti-science, while Self-Transcendence and Openness to change metatypes were connected with support for science. We also found significant differences in value profiles between participants with lower vs. higher anti-scientific beliefs. We discuss the possible motivational underpinnings of these results.

Extreme rainfall is one of the environmental hazards with disastrous effects on the human environment. Water resources management is very vulnerable to any changes in rainfall intensities. A spatiotemporal analysis is essential for study the impact of climate change and variability on extreme rainfall. In this study, daily rainfall data for 36 meteorological stations in Iraq during 1981–2017 were used to investigate the spatiotemporal pattern of 10 extreme rainfall indices using RClimDex package. These indices were classified into two categories: rainfall total (PRCPTOT, SDII, R95p, R99p, RX1day, and RX5day) and rainfall days (CDD, CWD, R10, and R20). Depending on the mean annual precipitation data, the study area was divided into three climatic zones to examine the time series features of those 10 indices. Results showed a tendency to increase in precipitation toward the northwestern part of Iraq, and more than 70% of stations achieved a positive trend for most indices. The most frequent negative trend appeared in eight stations distributed in the western and southern parts of Iraq, namely (Heet, Haditha, Anah, Rutba, Qaim, Nukheb, Najaf, and Fao). A significant positive trend appeared obviously in PRCPTOT and R95p with a rate of 0.1–4.6 and 0.5–2.7 mm per year, respectively. Additionally, the least trend increasing appeared in all precipitation days indices specifically in R10 and R20. Time series analyses revealed a positive trend in all regions under study, except SDII in the southern region. The most significant rate of change was noticed in regions one and two (northern and middle parts of Iraq), particularly for PRCPTOT and R95p 3.26 and 2.45 mm per day, respectively. Only the northern and eastern regions of Iraq experienced a high probability of significant extreme rainfall.

Opis:
Research aim: This paper aims to show the actions that European metropolises are taking to minimise anthropic pressure and to present the attitudes of Polish city dwellers towards climate change. Research problem and methods: The main research problem is to determine to what extent cities, within the possibilities of self-government, can limit, their negative impact on the environment, taking into account the attitudes and opinions of their inhabitants. As research methods, a system analysis, a decision-making analysis, and a behavioural method were used, within which a survey technique was applied. Process of argument: the article presents the process of climate change and its consequences for the state of the environment and the well-being of societies. Actions taken by European metropolises that are forerunners in the implementation of pro-environmental solutions that fit into the vision of the economy and society of the future are presented. This futuristic perspective was juxtaposed with an analysis of the attitudes of the inhabitants of Polish cities. Results of the scientific analysis: The scientific analysis has shown that metropolitan European communities value intangibles, recognising the state of the environment as an integral part of them. Similar attitudes have been noticed among the inhabitants of Polish cities, although they vary depending on the size of the centre. At the same time, environmental awareness is not the same as the willingness to incur costs to protect nature. Conclusions, innovations, and recommendations: Stopping climate change is only possible with the active participation of cities that are forerunners in the implementation of innovative environmental technologies. Polish cities should benefit from the good practices of European environmental leaders, with the participation of citizens in the decisions taken.

Aim: In order to address the question whether a more sustainable society requires a change of purpose or a change of system, we must first resolve the issue of human agency. Is humanity free to choose its own destiny, or is humanity’s future determined by contingency of conditions and choices of the past?   Design / Research methods: On the basis of cumulated knowledge and carefully cited literature, we defend the thesis that human agency is at best a minor factor in the determination of the future even in the short term.   Conclusions / findings: We conclude that significant decrease of resources depletion and greenhouse gas production may sustain humanity in the middle to long term, but the proven lack of human agency allows only to predict the complete demise of humanity in the short term.   Originality / value of the article: We apply the method of dialogue to show historical points of focus with respect to the issue of human agency. This paper is of interest to those organizing projects of socio- and or geo-engineering, since it describes the likely limitations of agency in regards to social structure, and so implies that actions will always have unintended consequences, which will drive more actions.
