Opis:
Profile of enzymes in samples of bacterial cellulose film treated with Trametes versicolor and Coniophora puteana. The paper presents the results of research showing the profile of hydrolytic enzymes synthesized by fungi that cause decomposition of wood during growth on film samples made of bacterial cellulose. The performed analyzes allowed for the conclusion that the presence of cellulose in the culture medium stimulates the fungal cells to synthesize full groups of enzymes that are not produced on the agar-maltose medium. Among the synthesized enzymes, both species of fungi produced two enzymes: β - glucosidase and N-acetyl-β - glucuronidase with the highest observed activity.
Spośród syntetyzowanych enzymów obydwa gatunki grzybów wytwarzały enzymy: β – glukozydazę i N-acetylo- β – glukuronidazę o najwyższej, stwierdzonej aktywności.

Opis:
Results of mycosociological studies in selected forests communities of the Masurian Landscape Park between 1997 and 2000 are discussed. Observations were conducted in 8 permanent plots and 69 supplementary plots (400 m2). Five plant associations characteristic of the Masurian Landscape Park, Peucedano-Pinetum, Serratulo-Pinetum, Vaccinio uliginosi-Pinetum, Tilio-Carpinetum and Fraxino-Alnetum, were examined. A total of 335 macromycete species were recorded. The greatest number of species was observed in Tilio-Carpinetum (198).
Największy udział grupa ta miała w grądach (ok. 35%) i łęgach (45%), najmniejszy w borach (11-23%). Potwierdza to związek liczby gatunków nadrewnowych z bogactwem dostępnego substratu (zróżnicowany drzewostan).

Opis:
Globally, tree-holes are important ecological component of forest and woodlands. Numerous microorganisms rely on cavities, both natural and those excavated by primary cavity nesting birds, mainly by woodpeckers, for their survival and reproduction. However, the fungi occurring in cavities are not well characterized. Specifically, very little is known about the fungal communities inhabiting the woodpecker nest cavities. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the fungal diversity of cavities in southern Poland. The samples were collected from freshly excavated woodpecker nest cavities using a nondestructive method (ND). The spatial distribution of fungal communities within the cavities was evaluated by sampling different parts of a single cavity using a destructive method (D). We detected 598 fungal isolates that included 64 species in three phyla and 16 orders using the ND method. Most of the fungi isolated from the cavities represented the phylum Ascomycota (73.9% of the isolates) with 11 orders, and Microascales was the predominant order (30% of the isolates). The most common species detected was Petriella musispora, which was isolated from 65% of the cavities. A total of 150 isolates (25%) were members of Basidiomycota, with Hymenochaetales being the dominant order (16% of the isolates). The basidiomycetous fungi were isolated from 55% of the cavities. Several taxa closely related to the pathogenic fungi and associated with secondary animal infections were detected in the wood of cavities. We identified different fungal communities in the three cavity parts using the D method. The cavity entrance had more number of species than the middle and bottom parts. The results of this study advanced our current knowledge on the mycobiota in woodpecker nest cavities and provided preliminary evidence for tree cavities being the hotspot for fungal diversity.

The aim of this study was isolation and molecular identification of laccase-producing saprophytic/phytopathogen Basidiomycetes species from different geographic regions with dominant vegetation of Pinus, Abies, and Quercus spp. in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Soil samples and visible mycelial aggregates were collected for fungal isolations. Soil samples were processed using a soil particle washing technique, where a selective Ascomycetes inhibitor and guaiacol, as an indicator of saprophytic Basidiomycetes growth, were used. Most of the isolates were obtained from samples collected in Parque Nacional, José Ma. Morelos (Km 23), Charo, Michoacán, Mexico. Based on sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS4) with respect to reference taxa, identification of saprophytic/phytopathogen Basidiomycetes species was carried out. In total, 15 isolates from 12 genera (i.e., Bjerkandera, Coriolopsis, Ganoderma, Hexagonia, Irpex, Limonomyces, Psathyrella, Peniophora, Phlebia, Phlebiopsis, Trametes, and Trichaptum) and one species from family Corticiaceae were identified. This study will be useful for further investigations on biodiversity of soil Basidiomycetes in different ecosystems. At present, these isolates are being used in our various lab experiments and can be useful in different industrial and bioremediation applications.

The long-term storage of chips in the form of piles visibly decreases the quality of this material. The aim of the research was to identify the colonization by fungi of forest chips intended for energy purposes and the growth of fungi, as well as the changes they can cause in wood during the storage of chips. The first sample for biological tests was taken when a test pile was being raised on the premises ofa power plant (the initial state) and successive samples were taken from the inside of the pile after 30, 60 and 120 days of storage. The surfaces of the samples were observed using a stereoscopic microscope. Wood inocula, taken from the inside of the samples, were placed on a sterile culture medium, incubated for 10 days, and then observed under a microscope. Numerous filamentous fungi, responsible for the soft rot of wood, were isolated from the samples taken when the pile was raised and after 30 and 60 days of storage; however, no traces of decay in these chips were observed under the microscope. For the first time, fungi belonging to the Basidiomycetes class were observed on chips taken from the pile after 120 days. Hence, it is only after 120 days that some of the changes in chip quality, signalised bya decrease in mass, may be connected with the growth of Basidiomycetes.

The diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi and sporocarps abundance were investigated in 2003-2005 at nine permanent study plots in a 50-year-old pine forest. Diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi consist of 53 taxa and the majority of them belonged to the genera Cortinarius, Russula, Amanita and Tricholoma. The most frequent species, whose fruit bodies were found in each study plot, were C. cibarius, L. necator L. rufus, P. involutus, R. aeruginea, T. saponaceumand the most abundant species which made the main part of total sporocarp yield were C. cibarius and P. involutus. The lowest species richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi was in study plots with the densest cover of grasses. Maximum of species over the fruiting period was characteristic for October and for September. It was noticed that some species virtually never occurred together at the same plot (e.g. C. cibarius and H. aurantiaca), meanwhile others occurred together quite frequently (e.g. H. aurantiacaand X. badius).

Opis:
T he paper deals with the succession of basidiomycete macrofungi on abandoned farmland. T T he research was carried out in the unique complex of old fields of different age located on the southwest edge of the Białowieża old-growth forest (NE Poland). T T hese lands undergo spontaneous secondary succession leading to formation of a continental fresh pine forest. Regular observations of basidiomata in 16 permanent plots (11 plots of 1000 m2, 5 plots of 400 m2) representing initial, optimal and terminal stage of vegetation development from psammophilous grassland to a pine forest with 100-year-old tree stand were conducted for three years. Soil and vegetation analyses were also carried out as well as quantitative examination of ectomycorrhizae in root samples. T he series yielded 300 species of macromycetes (including 6 collective taxa) found in permanent plots plus 18 species outside the plots. T T he species composition, spatial distribution of sporocarps, and quantitative structure of fungal communities changed along the successional gradient. Increasing diversity of fungi resulted from persistence of species typical of open areas and species associated with younger trees, as well as accumulation of species associated with older trees and more developed stands. Some species typical of younger phases were replaced with species arriving later in the chronosequence. Species usually occurred long before and after attaining maximum abundance and frequency. Species associated with certain periods of vegetation development could be distinguished, as well as species accompanying the phytocoenoses regardless of their developmental stage. Patterns in structural changes of the fungal community, e.g., in number of species, abundance, frequency and production of carpophores, could also be recognised. T T hey were different in ectomycorrhizal and in saprotrophic fungi. T T he occurrence of the former was influenced mainly by the presence of symbiotic trees and their age, stand structure and soil properties, while occurrence of the latter was affected by microclimatic factors and by diversity of accessible substrates. Changes in fungal communities were consistent with vegetation changes, but were also specific to this group of organisms.
