Opis:
The morphology of solid phase products of thermal transformation of transition metal acrylates or its cocrystallites is studied. The thermal transformation of the metal-containing monomers studied consists in dehydration, solid phase polymerization and thermolysis process. The topography of the initial compounds and solid phase products of thermal decay, as well as their composition, are analyzed by optical and electron microscopies. The average particle sizes, d$\text{}_{EM}$, are: 6.0-13.0 nm in the case of FeAcr$\text{}_{6}$ (based on the data of electron diffraction, the main product is Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$), 6.0 nm for FeCoAcr$\text{}_{8}$ and Fe$\text{}_{2}$CoAcr$\text{}_{14}$ (Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$, CoO, Fe$\text{}_{2}$CoO$\text{}_{4}$), and 6 nm for CoMal$\text{}_{2}$ (CoO). The material formed consists of nanosized metal particles uniformly allotted in polymer matrix.

In this work, sol-gel method was used in order to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles. $Zn(CH_3COO)_2$·$2H_2O$ was used to obtain ZnO precursor solution. To investigate the effect of organic gelating agents on grain size, various organic gelating agents such as triethanolamine (TEA), glycerin (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA) were used. X-ray diffraction analysis was used for phase identification and grain size calculation. ZnO powders were characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Opis:
The effect of thermal processing prior to severe plastic deformation by extrusion and swaging on grain refinement in ZK60 and AZ80 alloys was studied. The alloys received in direct-chill cast condition were homogenized at 415C and annealed (over-aged) at temperatures from 200 to 380°C. Both the direct-hill cast and over-aged conditions were extruded at T = 300C using an extrusion ratio of ER = 19. Hot extrusion resulted in substantial grain refinement in both cases, the effect being stronger in the over-aged material. The extruded bars were severe plastically deformed at 250C by swaging. Swaging refined further the grain size depending on the deformation ratio (number of passes). At optimal processing conditions the grain size was 450 nm and 570 nm for the AZ80 and ZK60 alloys, respectively.

Structure and magnetic properties of the thermal decomposition products of Fe(III)Co(II) acrylate complex were analysed. The crystalline phases, which were found in the fully processed material, at 643 K, were Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$, CoFe$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{4}$, and CoO and had a mean particle size of about 30 nm. In the intermediate stages of the thermolysis iron was present in a form of Fe$\text{}^{III}$ (trivalent low-spin iron), Fe$\text{}^{2+}$ (divalent high-spin iron), and Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$. The coercivity and remanence were measured versus temperature in the range of 5-300 K, in 1.1 T applied field. Both, $\text{}_{M}$H$\text{}_{c}$ and M$\text{}_{r}$, decreased showing room temperature values of 0.038 T and 7.49 mT, for coercivity and remanence, respectively. At temperatures below 200 K the hysteresis loops were asymmetrical, opened and shifted towards negative field values.

ZnO, Co doped ZnO (ZnO:Co) and CoO thin films were deposited on glass substrates by using the spark discharge technique with Zn-Zn, Zn-Co and Co-Co metal electrodes (tips). The structural and optical properties of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy measurements and UV-Vis spectrometry. Cubic phase reflection of CoO (200) was observed in the samples containing Co. The size of nanoparticles had varied between 38 nm and 200 nm in ZnO thin films. When Co electrode was used, spherical structure had deteriorated and clusters of particles, with smaller radii, were observed. In addition, when Co-Co electrode pairs were used, various cavities with different sizes were formed. Especially, it was observed that the optical transmittance had generally increased with the decreasing spark (charge) voltage, while increasing with the number of sparks. The Co-containing samples were green in color and it was observed that the loss of transmission appears in a specific region in the Co-doped ZnO thin films due to characteristic d-d transition of Co²⁺ ions. The thickness of the films had decreased with the increasing number of sparks. In addition, the band gap energy, E_{g}, evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements has been shifted to higher wavelengths (red shift) for the ZnO:Co thin films.

Opis:
The results of research into the preparation of silver nanoparticles using photoreduction in the presence of hydroquinone as the reductant were discussed. Substrates for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles were ultrafine crystalline gelatine-stabilised aqueous suspensions of silver bromide. The influence of the reductant to substrate molar ratio and the medium's pH to the efficient production of silver nanoparticles were studied. The properties of resultant silver particles were examined using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy was used for the photomicrography of silver nanoparticles suspensions.

The following paper presents the results of the investigation on the influence of the torque on the magnetic characteristics of the Hitperm-type $Fe_{41.5}Co_{41.5}Cu_1Nb_3B_{13}$ alloy, in as-quenched and nanocrystalline state. The methodology of application of the torque to the ring-shaped core is also described. This methodology gives a possibility of achieving uniform shearing stresses in the core. The results indicate that shearing stress sensitivity of Hitperm-type alloys depends on the annealing and nanocrystallization process. This effect should be considered during the development of magnetoelastic torque sensors.

Opis:
For the first time current quantization is reported for antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI) nanowires. It has been registered in current responses on electric field switching as well as on illumination on and off. Current steps determined in all experiments have been equal to each other within the experimental error. It has been explained by the quantized change of free carrier concentration in nanowire. Lateral dimensions of SbSI nanowires estimated from quantum steps are comparable with geometrical data reported for the same technology of material preparation.

Powder nanocomposite of Fe₃O₄/ZnS was prepared by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill. In this reaction natural magnetite mineral Fe₃O₄ was used, together with zinc acetate (CH₃COO)₂Zn·2H₂O and sodium sulfide Na₂S·9H₂O, as precursors for the zinc sulfide ZnS. X-ray diffraction revealed that the sample is composed of small nanocrystalline particles, containing Fe₃O₄ and ZnS. The non-milled magnetite showed distinctive Verwey transition at around 120 K, this becomes suppressed after milling, as a consequence of structural disorder and presence of defects. Moreover, the reduction of saturation magnetization from 91 A m²/kg to 69.2 A m²/kg was observed, as a consequence of the milling process. The magnetization of the Fe₃O₄/ZnS nanocomposite was the lowest (34.5 A m²/kg), due to the milling and to the decreased weight fraction of the ferrimagnetic component. Nevertheless, the Fe₃O₄/ZnS sample demonstrates ferrimagnetic behavior as well, and its structure is less perturbed by milling, the Verwey transition, although less impressive, but is preserved.

In the present investigation, nanocrystalline NiO thin films were prepared by thermal oxidation annealing of DC magnetron sputtered Ni thin films on quartz substrates. The effect of annealing temperature on the films structural, morphological and optical properties was investigated. The XRD analysis shows that all prepared films were of NiO with cubic structure and (200) orientation. The thickness of NiO films was in range of 40-100 nm. The average crystallite size is found to increase from 16 to 36 nm and the optical band gap energy decreases from 3.62 to 3.38 eV by increasing the annealing temperature from 400°C to 600°C. The AFM and SEM results show that the annealing temperature effectively influences the surface morphology of the films.

Multipod flower-like zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires have been successfully synthesized on Si(111) substrates using a pulsed laser deposition prepared Zn film as "self-catalyst" by the simple thermal evaporation oxidation of the metallic zinc powder at 850°C without any other catalysts or additives. The pre-deposited Zn films by pulsed laser deposition on the substrates can promote the formation of the ZnO nuclei effectively. Also it can further advance the growth of the flower-like ZnO nanowires accordingly. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, and photoluminescence were used to analyze the structure, morphology, composition and optical properties of the as-synthesized products. The results demonstrate that the nanowires were single crystalline with hexagonal wurzite structure, grown along the [0001] in the c-axis direction. Room temperature photoluminescence spectrum of the ZnO nanowires shows a nearband-edge ultraviolet emission (peak at ≈ 384 nm) and a deep-level green emission (peak at ≈ 513 nm). In addition, the growth mechanism of the flower-like ZnO nanowires is discussed in detail.

The subject of this study is the phase composition evolution of $Ni_{50}Ti_{50-x}Mo_x$ (x=10, 25, 40 at.%) systems prepared by mechanical alloying in as-milled state and after subsequent heat treatment. During milling a mechanically induced solid state reaction between nickel, titanium and molybdenum was observed leading to the formation of nanocrystalline disordered solid solutions. As a result of heat treatment a creation of NiMo intermetallic phase was observed as well as structure relaxation of previously formed solid solutions.

The zirconia (ZrO₂) is one of the transition-metal oxides with most excellent optical properties which thus attracts great attention in optical engineering. A variety of methods were used for deposition of ZrO₂ thin films on different substrates. In the present work, homogenous, transparent nanocrystalline zirconia thin films were grown by thermal oxidation of zirconium (Zr) thin films deposited on quartz substrate using DC magnetron sputtering technique. The objective of this study is to reveal the effect of thermal oxidation time on structural and optical properties of deposited films. The XRD results revealed the formation of single phase ZrO₂ with tetragonal structure in the films at different thermal oxidation times. The optical constant of ZrO₂ thin films was calculated from the UV-visible transmission spectra. It was found that the increase of thermal oxidation time leads to the increase of transmittance and optical band gap energy of the films. The AFM results showed that thermal oxidation time influences the surface morphology of the films.

In this review paper recent advances in chalcogene mechanochemistry are described. Three selected areas are being covered, i.e. metallurgy, materials science, and medicine. In extractive metallurgy, the processing of copper arsenic mineral enargite ($Cu_3AsS_4$) with the aim of its dearsenification and subsequent preparation of a new anticancer drug ($Na_3AsS_4$) and of copper in nanocrystalline state ( ≈ 20 nm) illustrate the non-traditional prospect of ore treatment. In material science, the new nanocrystalline semiconductors were synthesized mechanochemically, e.g. selenides of zinc and lead (ZnSe, PbSe) and bismuth sulphide ($Bi_2S_3$). Metal and chalcogene were applied as reaction precursors. In some cases, the amino acids (cystine, cysteine) were applied as sulphur precursor, in order to provide reactive sites on synthesized solid (PbS) for bioconjugation and to prevent agglomeration. The concept of nanomilling is described as a way to prepare effective substances for cancer treatment in medicine. In vitro activity of realgar ($As_4S_4$) as an example is described. In all three areas the focus is aimed also on industrial applications where suitable large-scale mills are described. The described examples represent the contemporary aim of mechanochemists - to prepare substances with the desired properties in a reproducible way under easy-operating, environmentally friendly and essentially waste-free conditions.

Nanocrystalline $Sb_2S_3$ particles have been synthesized from Sb and S powders by high-energy milling in a planetary mill using argon protective atmosphere. X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-VIS, and differential scanning calorimetry methods for characterization of the prepared particles were applied. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern shows that $Sb_2S_3$ nanocrystals belong to the orthorhombic phase with calculated crystallite size of about 36 nm. The nanocrystalline $Sb_2S_3$ particles are constituted by randomly distributed crystalline nanodomains (20 nm) and then these particles are forming aggregates. The monomodal distribution of $Sb_2S_3$ particles with the average hydrodynamic parameter 210 nm was obtained. The quantification of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis peaks give an atomic ratio of 2:3 for Sb:S. The optical band gap determined from the absorption spectrum is 4.9 eV, indicating a considerable blue shift relative to the bulk $Sb_2S_3$. Differential scanning calorimetry curves exhibit a broad exothermic peak between 200 and 300°C, suggesting recovery processes. This interpretation is supported by X-ray diffraction measurements that indicate a 23-fold increase of the crystallite size to about 827 nm as a consequence of application of high temperature process. The controlled mechanochemical synthesis of $Sb_2S_3$ nanoparticles at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure remains a great challenge.

In this study, 8 mol.% yttria stabilized cubic zirconia (8YSZ) powders as a matrix material and 0-15 wt% BaO powders as an additive were used in order to determine the effect of BaO addition and amount on the microstructure, sintering and static grain growth properties of the 8YSZ. For these purposes, undoped and BaO-doped 8YSZ specimens were annealed for grain growth at 1400, 1500, and 1600C for 10, 50, and 100 h, respectively. An increase of annealing temperature and holding time resulted in grain growth in all specimens. The grain size of the 8YSZ decreased with the higher level of BaO added. A limited amount of BaO dissolved in 8YSZ, and insoluble BaO reacted with $ZrO_2$ at high sintering temperature and generated the $BaZrO_3$ second sphase compound. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results showed that the $BaZrO_3$ second phase segregated at the surrounding grains and grain boundaries of the 8YSZ. These $BaZrO_3$ second phases had a pinning effect at the grain boundaries and prevented the migration of the grain boundaries of the 8YSZ. In conclusion, the grain growth results showed that the grain growth in the BaO-doped 8YSZ specimens was controlled by a solid solution drag mechanism.

Opis:
Modern methods for modification of properties and protection of material surface, which embrace gaseous phase physical deposition methods, arouse interest of many branches of industry as well as medicine. By virtue of their fine-grained structure, metallic coatings fabricated by these methods have superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance when compared with alloys made by traditional techniques. The paper presents a study of the electrical properties and structure of Al-Si coatings. The coatings were deposited by physical vapor deposition. Targets of hypo-, peri- and hypereutectic composition alloys were sputtered using the magnetron process. The coatings were the resistance element in the dc current circuit and measurements were carried out by the four-point method. Based on current-voltage parameters, the coatings electrical resistance was determined at specified temperatures. It was found that an increase of Si content in the chemical composition of the coatings resulted in an increase of their resistance and the maximum temperature to which the coating heats up. By means of a X-ray diffraction the occurrence of thin film of aluminum and silicon oxides on the coatings surface were detected. The oxide film increases resistance of the coatings and hamper measurements at low voltage.

Opis:
Decomposition of supersaturated solid solution of aluminium alloys alloyed with Sc and Zr have been studied in the work. The binary hypereutectic Al-Sc alloys, hyperperitectic Al-Zr alloys and ternary Al-Sc-Zr alloys were chosen. Alloys were obtained by the melt-spinning. Melts were quenched from temperatures of T = 1000C and T = 1400°C. The crystallization of anomalously supersaturated solid solution ($T_\text{quen.}$ = 1400°C) or the crystallization with the formation of "fan" structure ($T_\text{quen.}$ = 1000°C) are possible. The decomposition of anomalously supersaturated solid solution is continuous, with the precipitation of nanosized spherical $Al_3X$ (X = Sc, Zr) particles. The loss of thermal stability of Al-Sc alloys is due to the loss of coherence of the strengthening $Al_3Sc$ phase. In Al-Zr alloys the loss of strength is due to the formation of a stable tetragonal $DO_{23}$-ordered $Al_3Zr$ phase. After co-alloying of Al by Sc and Zr a bimodal grained structure was observed for the hypereutectic ternary alloy ($T_\text{quen.}$ = 1400°C). Nanosized grains of 50-60 nm were present on the boundaries of 1-2 μm large-sized grains. Transmission electron microscopy shows the formation of nanocomposite $Al_3Zr//Al_3Sc$ particles. The formation of $Al_3Zr$ shell changes the nature of the interfacial fit of the particle with the matrix and slows down the decomposition during the coalescence.

The mechanism and kinetics of Al₃Li/Al₃Sc composite particles formation during aging of triple Al-Li-Sc alloys were studied. The particles of such type consist of two isomorphic phases, ordered by L1₂ type. Composite particles in Al-Li-Sc are formed by epitaxial nucleation of δ' (Al₃Li) phase on pre-existing Al₃Sc precipitates at low temperature aging in the area of existence of Al₃Li phase, and form uniform shell around them. The motive force of such heterostructure formation is the minimization of total surface, elastic and chemical energy of the alloy. Dark-field transmission electron microscopy images of such composite particles taken from superlattice reflex 100 are composed of a dark core surrounded by a bright shell. The mutual diffusion of Li and Sc during the aging of Al-Li-Sc alloys is observed. The dark-field transmission electron microscopy image of the composite particle obtained from superlattice reflection became transparent after continuous natural aging of Al-Li-Sc alloys. The presence of the particle in Al matrix can be only seen due to decoration by secondary precipitations of δ' (Al₃Li) phase. Composition analysis of such transparent particles was carried out using two-beam kinematical theory of electron diffraction. Such composite particles with transparent cores remain in Al matrix even after severe plastic deformation of Al-Li-Sc alloy.

The magnesium alloy ZK60 received from Dead Sea Magnesium in direct-chill cast condition was extruded at T = 350C using an extrusion ratio of ER = 12. The extruded bars were severely plastically deformed at 250C by either equal channel angular pressing or swaging. While swaging led to similar grain refinements as observed after equal channel angular pressing, yield stress and tensile strength values were by far superior in the swaged material. This result is explained by the unfavourable 45° texture component of the (0002) pole figure that develops during the massive shear deformation in equal channel angular pressing. Unlike equal channel angular pressing, the grain orientation after swaging is similar as in the as-extruded condition. Annealing at elevated temperatures indicates very low thermal stability of microstructure and mechanical properties in the equal channel angular pressing material while both properties in the swaged microstructure are as stable as in the as-extruded reference.

One-step mechanochemical approach was used to synthesize nanocrystalline $Ce_{1-x}Y_xO_{2-δ}$ (x ≤ 0.35) solid solutions. X-ray powder diffraction was utilized to characterize crystalline phases of as-prepared products. It was shown that the presence of yttrium suppresses the crystal growth. The effect of yttrium content on the grain size before and after sintering of green bodies at high temperatures was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy. The combination of one-step mechanochemical process and relatively low sintering temperatures resulted in preparation of ceria-based ceramics with wide scale of possible applications.

In this study, nanostructured ZnO thin film coatings produced by sol-gel method have been examined and characterized. ZnO thin film coatings synthesized by the preparation of ZnO sols in the liquid phase from homogeneous solutions with precursor of zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(CH₃COO)₂·2H₂O). Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) has been used as a solvent material and monoethanolamine (MEA) has been used as a complexing agent. The final solutions have 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1 molar concentrations. General morphologies and detailed structural characterizations have been obtained by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Qualitative analyses of the synthesized coatings were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy studies of precursor, solution and final products were carried out to investigate transformation of the chemical compounds from the initial material to the final coating.

Multiferroic bismuth ferrite $(BiFeO_{3})$ nanopowders have been obtained at room temperature by mechanochemical synthesis. Depending on the post-synthesis processing the nanopowders exhibited differences in the mean sizes, presence of amorphous layer and/or secondary phases. Extended magnetic study performed for fresh, annealed and hot-pressed nanopowders revealed substantial improvement of the magnetic properties in the as-prepared powder.

A new kind of nanostructures with the negative curvature defined as the hollow ones have recently used in biomedical applications. In this work, an analytic model was developed to compute the size-dependent properties of spherical hollow gold nanoparticles in shell-core-shell configuration. This model has established to calculate the cohesive energies based on the surface energy consideration depending on sizes of inner and outer surfaces of hollow nanoparticles. The size and geometry of the model particles have been obtained by using the stability diagram and the collapsing mechanism was studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The model has been also applied to the hollow particles within unstable and half stable geometry. The predicted results have been compared with each other and those obtained by solid ones. The theoretically predicted size dependent properties are consistent with experimental observations and the hollow quantum dot calculations. Thus, an atomistic insight into the size effect on the cohesive energies of hollow nanoparticles has been presented.

Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys were prepared by the melt-spinning technique and characterized by X-ray diffraction, magnetostatic and Mössbauer effect methods. The Mössbauer spectroscopy allows to study the local environment of the Fe atoms in the investigated $Fe_{80-x}Ni_{x}B₂₀$ (x=8, 16, 24, 28) compounds and showing the changes in the structure due to the changing of Ni addition. Combination of X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy results confirm formation of different number of phase complex, including the α-FeNi, γ-FeNi, FeB, Fe₂B, Fe₃B in the investigated materials together with increase of Ni content.

Complex magnetoimpedance study is an alternating current technique that can be used to probe some properties of magnetic materials. We report on complex impedance measurements in low-negative magnetostrictive ferromagnetic CoFeSiB microwire. In these wires, the domain structure consists of two parts: an inner core, with domains oriented to the longitudinal direction of the wire, and an outer shell with circumferentially oriented domains. This magnetic structure is modified by AC current flowing through the microwire which produces an additional circumferential magnetic field $H_Φ$ and significantly affects magnetic structure inside the wires. The additional circular magnetization process in wires was studied by impedance measurements as a function of the amplitude and the frequency of the AC current after gradual Joule heating. Changes in the magnetization processes are reflected in the real permeability values and loss factor values.

Amorphous glass-coated microwires are ideal material for miniaturized applications for sensing the temperature, stress and magnetic field. One of the key parameters for future applications is their time and thermal stability. It has been shown that stability can be improved by using nanocrystalline materials that combine good soft magnetic properties of amorphous matrix with high structural stability of crystalline grains. Such nanocrystalline materials are usually obtained by annealing of amorphous precursor. In the given contribution, the influence of dc current annealing on the domain structure and GMI effect in amorphous and nanocrystalline $Fe_{40}Ni_{38}Mo_{4}B_{18}$ magnetic microwire has been studied. The annealing induces additional circular magnetic anisotropy, stress relief and structure homogenization. However, the increase of magnetostriction results in the decrease of GMI. Annealing at optimum crystallisation temperature results in an increase of the relative permeability due to the formation of the nanosized grains. Consequently, GMI amplitude is comparable to that of as-cast state.

The crystal and magnetic properties of $(Fe₈₀Nb₆B₁₄)_{1-x}Niₓ$ (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4) bulk alloys prepared by making use of mould casting technique have been studied by X-ray diffraction, magnetostatic and Mössbauer effect methods. Structural and magnetic properties of investigated bulk alloys have been compared with polycrystalline $Fe_{1-x}Niₓ$ (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4) alloys. The measurements have shown that the crystal and magnetic nonhomogeneity for bulk alloys are higher than in polycrystalline compounds, which confirms many magnetic wide magnetic hyperfine field distribution. The mean diameters of crystallites for $(Fe₈₀Nb₆B₁₄)_{1-x}Niₓ$ alloys was calculated from X-ray line broadening and were bigger than 10 nm. The mean magnetic moment and average magnetic hyperfine fields decrease with increase of nickel concentration in investigated compounds.

Structural phase transformations and magnetic properties of mesoporous MCM-41 template modified with iron and nickel salts were studied by nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The FeNi-oxide or the bimetallic crystal structure is formed for low and high Ni concentrations, respectively. The average size of nanoparticles is about 10 nm. About 70% of particles exist in a superparamagnetic state at room temperature.

Nanocrystalline Ni-ferrite was synthesized by modified precipitation method in which soluble starch is used as dispersing agent and $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ as a precipitating agent. $NiSO_{4}·6H_{2}O$ and $Fe(NO_{3})_{3}·9H_{2}O$ were used as precursors for nickel and ferric oxide, respectively. The obtained nanocrystalline Ni-ferrite was analysed and discussed through structural, compositional and magnetic characterization. Formation of pure $NiFe_{2}O_{4}$ phase with average crystallite size of 21 nm has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The determined phase composition was additionally supported by results of $\text{}^{57}Fe$ Mössbauer phase (MS) analysis and material's nanocrystalline structure by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Thermomagnetic behaviour was studied up to 800 °C. The obtained room temperature magnetic hysteresis loop, recorded by means of a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), exhibits characteristic "S" shape of the soft magnetic material with the measured coercivity of about 10 kA/m and the specific moment up to 40 $Am^{2}$/kg.

Due to its fascinating properties such as high surface area, very good electrical and thermal conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, optical and electrochemical properties, graphene may be the ideal material as a substrate of nanocomposites for applications in electronics. Graphene layer can be used as a conductive matrix allowing good contact between crystallites of nanomaterials. Despite pure graphene, its composites with other species can be of interest. In this paper the results of studies on the effect of methods and parameters of synthesis, for obtaining composites graphene/Fe₂O₃ on their structural properties and electrical properties are presented. A series of experiments was conducted using a commercially available graphene (Graphene Nanopowder AO-3) and iron nitrate. The materials were obtained using two pressure methods: pressure synthesis in the autoclave and synthesis in the microwave solvothermal reactor. The syntheses were carried out in a solution of ethanol. The specific surface area, helium density, morphology, phase composition, thermal properties and electric conductivity of the obtained composites were investigated.

In this contribution a less common experimental procedure is presented, which includes simultaneous application of electrical pulse heating, and longitudinal mechanical stress, applied along the ribbon length, for the magnetic property tailoring. The annealing is performed in protecting atmosphere in a vertical tube furnace by applying a weight at the free, cold bottom end of the ribbon. In these circumstances neither nanometer-size grains nor the concentration-distribution have been developed. The static coercive force, anisotropy and demagnetizing factor are monitored as a function of pulse number.

Nanoparticle $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}Mn_{0.7}Fe_{0.3}O_3$ with the average particle size of 10 nm was mechanochemically synthesized in the single-step procedure. Temperature and field dependences of magnetization were recorded under both ambient and applied hydrostatic pressure up to 0.47 GPa. At ambient pressure, two magnetic transition points were observed: one of the spin-glass like type at the temperature $T_{f}$ ≈ 34 K, and ferro-to-paramagnet transition at $T_{C}$ ≈ 51 K. Under the applied pressure magnetic parameters gradually changed: (i) both $T_{C}$ and $T_{f}$ were lowered with the increase in pressure; (ii) both high field magnetization $M_{5T}$ and remanent magnetization $M_{Rem}$ decreased with pressure; (iii) coercivity $H_{C}$ increased with pressure. The obtained results show that magnetism of a nanoparticle system with high degree of intrinsic disorder diminishes with the applied pressure that is in compliance with the effect of the increased cationic disorder ("internal pressure") in bulk manganites.

This paper presents the combustion synthesis and characterization of one-dimensional silicon carbide nanostructures (nanowires of 3C-SiC polytype with zincblend structure) by means of cathodoluminescence technique. Cathodoluminescence spectra of nano-SiC samples and, as a reference, of a commercially available SiC micropowder are compared. It is shown that the emission band at 1.97 eV which is slightly evidenced in the spectrum of the commercial SiC under 10 keV electron beam irradiation becomes the prevailing band in CL of the purified silicon carbide nanowires.

CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals have been prepared by a two-step solid state mechanochemical synthesis. CdSe prepared from elements in the first step is mixed with ZnS synthesized from zinc acetate and sodium sulfide in the second step. The crystallite size of the new type CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals determined by X-ray diffraction Rietveld refined method was 35 nm and 10 nm for CdSe and ZnS, respectively. Energy dispersive/transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy methods show good crystallinity of the nanoparticles and scanning electron microscopy elemental mapping illustrate consistent distribution of Cd, Se, Zn and S elements in the bulk of samples. UV-VIS spectra show an onset at 320 nm with calculated bandgap 3.85 eV. This absorption arises from the vibration modes of Zn-S bonds. The nanocrystals show the blue shift from the bandgap of bulk ZnS (3.66 eV). The synthesized CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals have been tested for dissolution, cytotoxicity and L-cysteine conjugation. The dissolution of Cd was less than 0.05 μg $mL^{-1}$ (in comparison with 0.8 μg $mL^{-1}$ which was evidenced for CdSe alone). The very low cytotoxic activity for selected cancer cell lines has been evidenced. CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals coated with L-cysteine are water-soluble and have a great potential in biomedical engineering as fluorescent labels.

The main aim of this paper is to show porosity evolution during application of various processing conditions including pressing, sintering and equal channel angular pressure. An aluminium based powder (Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Fe) was used as investigated material. After applying different pressing pressures (400 and 600 MPa), specimens were dewaxed in a ventilated furnace at 400C for 60 min. Sintering was carried out in a vacuum furnace at 610C for 30 min. The specimens were processed by single equal channel angular pressure pass. A significant disadvantage of powder metallurgy processing methods is the presence of porosity. Pores act as crack initiators and, due to their presence, the distribution of stress is inhomogeneous across the cross-section and leads to reduction of the effective load bearing area. The equal channel angular pressure process, causing stress distribution in deformed specimens, made the powder particles to squeeze together to such an extent that the initially interconnected pores transform to small isolated pores. The proposed safety diagram includes the combined effect of stress and strain behaviour during equal channel angular pressure. The "safety line" eliminates and quantifies the effect of large pores as a potential fracture initiation sites with respect to the mechanical viewpoint.

In the current study, $W-5Ni-2Fe-Y_2O_3$ model alloys were produced using a high-energy planetary ball mill. The presence of the γ(Ni, Fe) phase is favored with respect to material properties in this alloy. Therefore, a secondary ball milling method was introduced to obtain a fine and uniformly distributed γ(Ni, Fe) phase. Phase development of mechanical alloyed powders was investigated by X-ray diffraction. The results show that the formation of the γ(Ni, Fe) phase was found after 18 h of a pre-milling procedure. A further secondary milling method produced a uniform microstructure with grain refinement. TEM results also show changes in the lattice parameters of the tungsten and γ(Ni, Fe) phase associated with the solid solubility limits in the alloy produced by secondary ball milling.

Synthetic opals composed of 300 nm silica spheres are impregnated with a Bi₁₂SiO₂₀ melt at 1190 K. Structure and properties of the as-prepared samples are studied by employing the scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical spectroscopy and direct current conductivity techniques. The nanocomposites are found to be multi-phase systems composed of Bi₁₂SiO₂₀, Bi₄Si₃O₁₂ and SiO₂ crystallites with an average linear size not less than 20 nm. Formation of Bi₄Si₃O₁₂ crystallites becomes possible as a result of changing in the Bi₂O₃-SiO₂ molar ratio due to the melting of silica spheres. The Raman intensity redistribution observed by surface scanning may be caused by both composition inhomogeneity and concentration of the exciting radiation field at composite defects. The "red" shift of photoluminescence band is observed. Activation energy of direct current conductivity is estimated as 1.1 eV.

The microstructure and magnetic properties of $Fe_{82}Zr_4Nb_3B_{10}Cu_1,$ $Fe_{80}Zr_4Mn_3B_{12}Cu_1$ and $Fe_{80}Zr_4Ti_3Cu_1B_{12}$ alloys were investigated. Using RALE software the basic parameters of transformers made from nanocrystalline alloys with about 25% and 50% of crystalline phase were calculated. The transformer made from $Fe_{80}Zr_4Ti_3Cu_1B_{12}$ alloys after annealing at 773 K for 1-shows the lowest core losses and highest efficiency.

Electric conductivity of $(Bi_{1-x}La_{x}FeO_{3})_{0.5}(PbTiO_{3})_{0.5}$ ceramics obtained from nanopowders synthesized by high-energy milling from respective oxides was studied in the frequency range 10 mHz ÷ 1 GHz. At room temperatures the low-frequency conductivity was found to be dominated by the contribution from poor-conducting grain boundaries, whereas the contribution in the range 1 kHz ÷ 1 MHz, due to the grain interior, was related by us to the small polaron hopping. Moreover, the electron exchange between ferric and ferrous ions activated at higher frequencies was found to be added to the conductivity above ≈ 1 MHz.

Opis:
We will focus on the important aspect of mechanical activation by grinding in a mill, namely, nanoscale wear of the treated substances and of the milling tools. A new technology called abrasive-reactive wear has been developed that utilizes wear debris as an integral component of the reaction system rather than treating it as a harmful impurity. This technology is applied to the processing of low-grade diamond and silicon by cupric milling tools. Abnormal influence of graphite on abrasive wear degree is established.

The $Cu-Fe_3$ and $Cu-Cr_3C_2$ bulk nanocomposites are prepared by consolidation of the mechanically alloyed powders. The structure and properties (density, Vickers microhardness and electrical conductivity) of them have been studied. It is shown that microhardness is equal to 236 HV and 470 HV for a Cu-5 vol.% carbide phase and for a Cu-30 vol.% carbide phase, respectively. The microhardness which can be influenced by the heat treatment temperature depends on the grain size of the Cu matrix. The electrical conductivity values of 38-44% IACS (International Annealing Copper Standard) at room temperature have been found.

Opis:
The effect of ethylene partial pressure and temperature on the hydrocarbon decomposition rate was studied. As a catalyst, a triply promoted iron catalyst (with addition of small amounts of potassium, calcium and alumina oxides) was used. The mean crystallites size was ca. 17 nm. The processes were performed using pure ethylene or ethylene-nitrogen mixture under atmospheric pressure at the temperature range from 400 to 460°C. The growth of carbon mass as a function of reaction time was measured using a thermobalance. The phase composition of the samples after ethylene decomposition was determined using X-ray diffraction technique. The reaction rate was independent of ethylene partial pressure in the range from 0.25 to 1 bar. The maximal carbon yield for given experimental conditions was estimated.

This paper presents the results of research of C-Pd composite films obtained by the physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition method. These films will be applied as hydrogen sensors. It has been examined whether the substrate has an impact on morphology and topologies of the C-Pd composite and whether the thermal conductivity of the substrate has an impact on the average size of the Pd nanoparticles. Substrates such as Al₂O₃, SiO₂, Si, and Mo were used, and in the physical vapor deposition process fullerene (C₆₀) and palladium acetate were deposited. Some of the samples were examined microscopically, while another part was modified in the chemical vapor deposition process in the presence of xylene. It was found that the average size of the Pd nanoparticles prepared in the physical vapor deposition process is independent of the substrate for all of the substrates used in the present experiment. During the chemical vapor deposition process an increase of the size of the Pd nanoparticles was observed - as expected. What is more, we noticed a weak relation between the size of the Pd nanoparticles and the type of substrate on which the C-Pd composite was deposited.

In this work, the effects of mechanical alloying on the mechanical properties of $BaTiO_3$ were investigated. In order to examine the milling conditions and sintering parameters on the solid state formation of $BaTiO_3$, X-ray diffraction technique was used. After mechanical alloying process, nanosized powder mixtures were produced. Sintering temperatures were 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, and 1200C and sintering duration was 1 h. Besides X-ray diffraction examinations, mechanical properties of the $BaTiO_3$ samples were determined by Vickers microhardness test.

Zinc oxide is a II-VI semiconductor material which is gaining increasing interest in various fields such as biology, medicine or electronics. This semiconductor reveals very special physical and chemical properties, which imply many applications including a transparent electrode in solar cells or LED diodes. Among many applications, ZnO is also a prospective material for sensor technology, where developed surface morphology is very advantageous. In this work we present ZnO nanowires growth using atomic layer deposition method. ZnO nanowires were obtained using controlled physical properties. As a substrate we used gallium arsenide with gold-gallium eutectic droplets prepared on the surface at high temperature. To obtain the eutectic solution there was put a gold thin film on GaAs through the sputtering and then we annealed the sample in a nitrogen gas flow. The so-prepared substrate was applied for growth of ZnO nanowires. We used deionized water and zinc chloride as oxygen and zinc precursors, respectively. The eutectic mixture serves as a catalyst for the ZnO nanowires growth. Au-Ga droplets flow on the front of ZnO nanowires. Scanning electron microscopy images show ZnO nanorods in a form of crystallites of up to 1 μm length and a 100 nm diameter. It is the first demonstration of the ZnO nanowires growth by atomic layer deposition using the vapour-liquid-solid approach.

ZnO films doped with the cadmium (0.4-0.6%) were grown on crystalline sapphire $c-Al_2O_3$ substrates applying radiofrequency magnetron sputtering at the temperature of 400°C in $Ar-O_2$ atmosphere. The as-grown films were investigated in detail using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cathodoluminescence spectra. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the films possess a hexagonal wurtzite-type structure with the dominant crystallite orientation along the c axis. It was found that the small concentration of the cadmium significantly enhances the ultraviolet emission associated with excitonic transitions. We suggest that this enhancement effect mainly results from appearance of the cadmium isoelectronic traps, which may bind an exciton, thereby increasing the probability of radiation recombination. The effect of Cd isoelectronic impurity on structural and luminescent properties of ZnO films is discussed.

In this paper, the mechanical milling process for various durations was used to generate a homogeneous distribution of 1 wt.% carbon nanotube within Cu powder. Effects of milling time on morphology, microstructure, and microhardness of the powder were studied. The results showed that work hardened Cu-carbon nanotube nanocomposite powder with nanosized grains can be fabricated by the mechanical milling of the elemental materials. The addition of carbon nanotubes accelerated the morphological and microstructural evolution during the mechanical milling and influenced the compressibility of the powder. The compressibility behavior of the powder was analyzed using analytical models and used to estimate the strength of the powder. The nanocomposite compacts were sintered in vacuum and showed the maximum relative density of ≈91% at optimum condition.

The electronic structure of the ground state of fullerene-like and wurtzite-like $Zn_{n}O_{n}$ and $Zn_{n - x}Cd_{x}O_{n}$ clusters has been investigated by computer physics methods. A relative evaluation of the stability and band gap width of clusters depending on the number of atoms in the cluster and its geometry has been performed. The model of a fullerene-like $(ZnO)_{60}$ particle with a mixed $sp^3//sp^2$ type of bonds has been constructed. A $(ZnO)_{12}$ cluster of $T_{h}$ symmetry was taken as a base of the model. Within the framework of the B3LYP electron density hybrid functional method with a set of 3-21G(d) split valence basis functions, a numerical investigation of the influence of the incorporation of cadmium (33%) into the ZnO matrix on the electronic structure and the band gap width has been performed.

In the paper we present and discuss magnetic properties of the $Tb(Ni_{1-x}Fe_{x})_{3}$ (x=0.2, 0.6) crystalline compounds and their ball-milled powders. The investigated samples are polycrystalline and crystallize in the rhombohedral $PuNi_{3}$ type of crystal structure. The Curie temperature of the material seems to be independent of particle size and is constant. The coercivity depends on the amount of iron dopant. The saturation magnetization decreases after mechanical grinding which is connected with the reduction in particle size. After 6 h milling time the SEM results show the presence of nanoflakes with thickness up to 100 nm or even smaller. Moreover, the pulverization leads to the observed decrease of magnetocaloric effect.

Opis:
Photoluminescence studies of zinc oxide nanowires produced by a carbo-thermal method on a nickel foil substrate are reported. Two types of as-grown samples: the first - containing only buffer film, and the second - containing both zinc oxide nanowires and buffer film grown in the same technological process, were investigated by means of the temperature-dependent photoluminescence. X-ray diffraction measurements of buffer film show that it is polycrystalline and is composed from wurtzite-type ZnO (main phase) and includes minority phases: rock salt type (Ni,Zn)O and hexagonal C₃N₄. The shape of the apparently monocrystalline nanowires is characterized by hexagonal section matching with the expectations of the hexagonal ZnO structure. The presence of LO-phonon replicas in photoluminescence spectra for the second sample is used as an argument for confirmation that ZnO nanowires are single crystalline. The method of growth of ZnO nanowires on nickel oxide opens perspectives to produce $Zn_{1-x}Ni_{x}O$ diluted magnetic semiconductor nanowires.

Flash lamp annealing was applied to the modification of thin amorphous Si layers on $SiO_2$ and glass. Slow positron implantation spectroscopy was used for the characterisation of the microstructure before and after flash lamp annealing. Changes in the structure down to a depth of some micrometres below the surface observed with slow positron implantation spectroscopy will be presented and discussed.

In this paper the physical properties of two types of Co-doped ZnO nanostructures: tetrapods and nanofibers grown by a rapid thermal evaporation process and prepared by the electrospinning technique, respectively, were investigated and analyzed. Surface morphology of the samples was examined using scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction measurements showed hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure of both types of investigated nanostructures. Both X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering data confirmed high phase purity of the samples. The magnetic properties studied with the use of the SQUID magnetometer confirmed a presence of ferromagnetic order in analyzed nanostructures. The observed photoluminescence spectra exhibited two groups of lines. The first one, in the ultraviolet spectral range, is due to the optical transitions close to ZnO band gap, the second one in the red region is most probably related to the $Co^{2+}$ d-d internal transitions. The influence of native defects on the optical properties is also shown and discussed. All results reported here lead us to the conclusion that in the mixed crystal nanostructures obtained, a fraction of the $Zn^{2+}$ ions is substituted by $Co^{2+}$ ions.

Barium titanate, $BaTiO_3$ ceramic powders were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis and by the Pechini method. A powder mixture of BaO and $TiO_2$ was treated in a planetary ball mill in an air atmosphere for up to 1 h, using zirconium oxide vial and zirconium oxide balls as the milling medium. After 60 min $BaTiO_3$ phase was formed. In both ways $BaTiO_3$ ceramics were sintered after 2 h on 1300°C without pre-calcinations step. The heating rate was 10°C $\text{min}^{-1}$. The formation of phase and crystal structure of $BaTiO_3$ was approved by X-ray diffraction analysis and the Raman spectroscopy. The morphology and microstructure of obtained powders were examined by scanning electron microscopy method. Sharp phase transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric state was observed. The hysteresis loop is very well performed with regular sharp characteristic of ferroelectric materials.

Amorphous $Y_{50}Cu_{42}Al_8$ ribbon was prepared by melt-spinning technique on the Cu wheel. The crystallisation process was analysed by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Differential scanning calorimetry curves characterising two crystallisation stages of $Y_{50}Cu_{42}Al_8$ alloy were measured in non-isothermal dynamic mode at different heating rates. Activation energies of both steps of crystallisation process were acquired by the Kissinger method and are equal to 570± 56 and 290±29 kJ/mol for the first and second stage, respectively. By annealing the ribbon at a given temperature for various times the nanocrystalline phase grains of the sizes of about 40 nm in diameter were created. The influence of the annealing temperature on the grain size evolution was also examined.

The properties of nanocomposite carbon-nickel-palladium (C-Ni-Pd) films deposited on Al₂O₃ substrate have been investigated and the results are presented in this work. C-Ni-Pd films were obtained by a 3 step process consisting of PVD/CVD/PVD methods. The structure and morphology of the obtained films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques at various stages of film formation. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer was used for measuring the elements segregation in the obtained film. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy observations have shown carbon nanotubes decorated with palladium nanoparticles in the final film. The average size of the palladium nanoparticles did not exceed 10 nm.

The structural, cohesive and electronic properties of fullerene-like isolated Zn₄₄Cd₄O₄₈ cluster with consideration of CdO phase clusterization are studied in the frames of density functional theory B3LYP/3-21G(d). It is revealed that an enlargement of CdO phase content in Zn₄₄Cd₄O₄₈ cluster leads to nonlinear rapid increase in cohesive energy and cluster stability, as well as band-gap energy shrinkage.

Se-doped ZnO films have been deposited on the sapphire substrates by the radio-frequency magnetron sputtering technique. An influence of the isoelectronic impurity Se on the room-temperature luminescence of the ZnO films is studied. It is revealed that the Se doping leads to an appearance of the intense near-band edge emission spectrum, which consists of three emission bands. The dominant emission band is related to the recombination of the bound excitons. The radiation caused by the band-to-band transitions of free carriers is observed in the high-energy side of the spectrum (ħω > $E_{g}$).

The structural, cohesive, and electronic properties of a fullerene-like $(ZnO)_{60}$ cluster with a shell of diamond-like structure with $\text{sp}^2//\text{sp}^3$ bonds have been investigated in comparison with those of clusters differing in geometry and composed of the equal number of ZnO structural units (clusters of fullerene, onion, and coordination tetrahedron) within the framework of the electron density hybride functional method (B3LYP) with a set of 6-31G(d) split valence basis functions. The fullerene-like $(ZnO)_{60}$ cluster is used as a model in an investigation of the change in the band-gap width (the decrease in the band-gap width is ≈ 0.2 eV) in the case of the substitution of Zn atoms by Cd atoms (20% of substitution) in the ZnO matrix in ZnCdO ternary structures.

Samarium doped $LaYO_{3}$ nanocrystalline phosphor powders are obtained by polymer complex solution method. Stoichiometric quantities of $La_{2}O_{3},$ $Y_{2}O_{3}$ and for dopant ions $Sm_{2}O_{3}$ were dissolved in hot nitric acid. Polyethylene glycol was added in solutions in 1:1 mass ratio to corresponding metal nitrates to form gel. The gel is combusted and annealed at 800°C for two hours to form nanopowder samples. Crystalline structure and phase purity is checked by X-ray diffraction and show that this material is synthesized in cubic bixbyite type structure for the first time. Luminescence properties of $Sm^{3+}$ doped $LaYO_{3}$ exhibited characteristic orange-red emission coming from the intra-4f-shell $\text{}^{4}G_{5/2} \rightarrow \text{}^{6}H_{J}$ electron transitions with emission decay of 1.5 ms. Energy level positions are derived from emission and excitation spectra.

The structural, cohesive, and electronic properties of a fullerene-like $Zn_{n-x}Cd_{x}O_{n}$ (n=36) clusters have been investigated within the framework of the electron density hybride functional method (B3LYP) with a set of 3-21G(d) split valence basis functions. These clusters are used as a model in an investigation of the change in the band-gap width in the case of the substitution of Zn atoms by Cd atoms in the ZnO matrix in ZnCdO ternary structures. The presented investigations showed that a substitution of Zn atom to Cd (5.5, 11, 16.7, 22 and 33 at.% Cd) leads to reduction of cluster stability and monotonous decrease of energy gap (0.145, 0.259, 0.354, 0.436, 0.586 eV, accordingly).

We report on the photoluminescence studies of ZnO and ZnCdO nanowires grown on SiO$\text{}_{2}$/Si substrates by low-pressure vapor phase synthesis. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements show that the crystallographic structure of these ZnO and ZnCdO nanowires is of wurtzite-type with a high crystal perfection. Surface morphology of samples was determined by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The photoluminescence spectra of as-grown nanowires, nanowires extracted from the substrate and deposited onto Si wafer, and nanowires dispersed in ethanol by sonication were investigated at room temperature and compared to each other. The temperature dependence of the near band-gap photoluminescence emitted by the as-grown nanowires was also measured and analyzed.

The paper is focused on the magnetic and structural properties of RCo₅ (R = Y, Gd, Sm) intermetallics fabricated by high energy ball - milling (HEBM). The investigated samples were first produced by arc-melting as bulk materials and then were milled for 1h in dimethylformamide with balls to powder ratio 10:1. The influence of the HEBM parameters on the microstructure was investigated by a variety of complementary measurement methods. The Rietveld refinement was performed to estimate the dependence of crystallite size and microstrain on type of sample. The hysteresis loops were recorded by SQUID magnetometer at 2 K and 300 K and at magnetic field up to μ₀H=7 T. The impact of short HEBM process is visible as the enhancement of coercivity and simultaneous reduction of the saturation magnetization.

The paper refers to magnetic and structure properties of the $(Fe_{80}Nb_{6}B_{14})_{1-x}Pt_{x}$ (x=0.15, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.6) bulk nanocrystalline alloys prepared using the vacuum suction casting technique. The samples were in the form of rods with diameters ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. It was shown that the optimal Pt content is x=0.4 with the coercive field equal to 0.2 T and maximum energy product $|BH|_{max}=11.2 kJ//m^{3}$. The magnetic properties can be associated with Fe-Pt, Fe and Fe-B phases, depending on the alloy composition.

Nanostructured porous GaP layers of thickness up to ≈ 20 μm were fabricated on n-type (111)-oriented crystalline c-GaP substrates. Studies of microstructure of porous GaP in dependence on electrolyte type and regimes of technological procedure have been carried out by scanning electron microscopy. The samples were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry in visible and near UV spectral range. The investigations have shown that the structure and optical response of porous GaP can be efficiently controlled by technological procedure of electrochemical formation. The shape and dimension of pores can be varied from nanometer-scaled cylindrical pores to GaP nanorods.

Nanoparticles of chalcopyrites copper indium gallium sulfide ($CuIn_{x}Ga_{1-x}S_{2}$ or CIGS) and copper indium gallium selenide ($CuIn_{x}Ga_{1-x}Se_{2}$ or CIGSe) were fabricated sonochemically. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The electrical and photoelectrical properties of the fabricated nanomaterials were investigated.

The paper refers to phase stability of the $(Fe_{80}Nb_{6}B_{14})_{0.9}Tb_{0.1}$ bulk nanocrystalline alloys prepared using the vacuum suction casting technique. The samples were in the form of rods with diameters d=2, 1.5, 1 and 0.5 mm. Heating up to 900 K reveals structural changes that occur at temperatures above 680 K (DSC and M(T) measurements). The phase analysis, using Mössbauer spectra, indicates the decrease of $Tb_{2}Fe_{14}B$ and increase of Fe content in the samples after the heat treatment. The most stable is the alloy with d=1 mm, where the formation of α-Fe phase was not observed. The decrease of d causes significant hardening i.e. coercive field increases from 0.57 T to 2.66 T for d=2 mm and d=0.5 mm, respectively.

The paper refers to magnetic properties of the $(Fe_{80}Nb_{6}B_{14})_{1-x}Tb_{x}$ (x=0.06 and x=0.08) bulk nanocrystalline alloys prepared using the vacuum suction casting technique. The samples were in the form of rods with diameters of d=1.5 mm, 1 mm and 0.5 mm. It was shown that for the alloys with x=0.08 the significant magnetic hardening with the decrease of sample diameter was observed. For d=0.5 mm the coercive field equals 2.46 T and the maximum energy product $|JH|_{max}$=77.2 kJ/$m^{3}$.

The paper refers to computer simulations of interactions between magnetically hard particle embedded into ultra-hard matrix. We used simulated annealing and Monte Carlo simulations in a frame of the 3D Heisenberg model. The performed simulations reveal that the particles show additional exchange anisotropy dependent on "frozen" spin direction in the matrix and the angle between matrix and particle easy magnetization axes. The particle-matrix coupling are responsible for multi-phase magnetic hysteresis shape and exchange-bias like effect.

A Zr-2.5 wt%Nb alloy was processed by equal-channel angular pressing and then tested under creep conditions at 623 K using a tensile stress within the range from 120 to 300 MPa. The results show conventional power-law creep with a stress exponent of n > 3 which is consistent with an intragranular dislocation process involving the glide and climb of dislocations. It is demonstrated that diffusion creep is not important in these tests. For comparison purposes, the experiments were conducted using both the unprocessed alloy and after processing by equal-channel angular pressing. It was found that under same testing conditions the measured minimum creep rates in the pressed alloy with ultrafine grain sizes were faster than in the same alloy in a coarse-grained unprocessed condition.

Opis:
The paper refers to magnetic and structural properties of powders made of Fe-Nb-B-Tb ultra-high coercive alloy. The initial alloy was milled in a low energy mill for 1 h and 14 h. With increasing milling time we observed gradual deterioration of hard magnetic properties i.e. the coercive field decreases from 5.51 T to 0.14 T for the bulk alloy and 14 h milled powder, respectively. However, for the 1 h milling time the micrometric powder reveals quite high coercivity of 2.77 T which is promising for possible applications in magnetic composites.

Opis:
The paper refers to a kind of nanoscale characterization of superparamagnetic materials above and below the so-called blocking temperature. It is propose to apply the Stoner-Wohlfarth model of nanoparticles magnetization supplemented by the two-level kinetic model, determining behavior in T>0. This approach allows determination of distribution of magnetic moments and energetic barriers of magnetic objects based on magnetization curves. In many cases, the determined distribution of magnetic moments can be recalculated into average size of the magnetic objects giving finally a nano/microscaled picture of the material. The proposed method was successfully used in characterization of diluted magnetics, nanocomposites, powders and even for human hemoglobin. In the paper the basic theory and its application to the nanoscale characterization is discussed in detail.

Opis:
Crystalline nanocomposite KDP/Al₂O₃ was obtained by growth of KDP nanocrystals inside nanopores of amorphous alumina matrix (Al₂O₃) with pores diameter of 35 nm. Performed atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Al₂O₃ matrix is filled up with a tetragonal phase KDP nanocrystals in preferred crystallographic orientation [100]. The nonlinear optical response was studied by means of second harmonic generation via the Maker fringe technique employing picosecond laser pulses at wavelength of 1064 nm. The polarization dependent second harmonic generation response was observed mainly due to the macroscopic crystalline structure anisotropy of KDP/Al₂O₃ nanocomposite. The investigation of such type of nanocomposites which combine nanoscale nonlinear optical materials has a great importance since they may improve the performance of entire system.

Opis:
Enhancement of soft magnetic properties in the selected group of amorphous alloys was examined by different experimental methods. It was shown that permeability for annealed samples (at T_{a} for 1 h; 300 K < T_{a} < 900 K) plotted vs. T_{a} shows a maximum at which is 700, 725, 725, and 750 K for Fe₈₂Nb₂B₁₄Y₂, Fe₈₂Nb₂B₁₄Gd₂, Fe₈₂Nb₂B₁₄Tb₂ and Fe₈₂Nb₂B₁₄Dy₂ alloy, respectively. For samples after the optimization annealing permeability is at least 10 times higher than in the as-quenched state. The optimized microstructure is free of iron nanograins and corresponds to so-called relaxed amorphous phase.

In this work we present magnetic properties of the $(Fe_{80}Nb_6B_{14})_{1-x}M_x$ (where M = Ni, Ag, Gd, Tb and x = 0.08, 0.16, 0.32) bulk nanocrystalline alloys prepared by making use of mould casting technique. The applied preparation technique is favorable to nanocrystallization of the alloys with mean diameters of crystallites ranged from about 10 nm to 30 nm. Phase identification reveals a formation of ternary $RE_2Fe_{14}B$ and binary $REFe_2$ phases dependently on the alloy composition. It was found that for the alloys with Ag addition magnetic moment of Fe atom increases from 2.26 $μ_{B}$ to 3.36 $μ_{B}$ for x = 0.08 and x = 0.32, respectively. For Ni addition this quantity decreases with increasing x due to appearing of Fe-Ni (fcc) phases. For Gd, Tb additions the alloys are ferrimagnetic with compensation composition ranged between x = 0.08 and x = 0.16. The both rare earth alloying additions cause a significant magnetic hardening especially in the case of Tb.

In this work, we investigate the formation of silicon nanocrystals in annealed low pressure chemical vapor deposition in situ nitrogen doped silicon thin films $(SiN_x)$ obtained at low temperature (465°C) by using a mixture of disilane $(Si_2H_6)$ and ammonia $(NH_3)$. Results show that nitrogen content in films plays an important role in defining the obtained films morphology in terms of crystallites sizes and their distribution. Indeed, according to the nitrogen content introduced in films, the crystalline state of films varies from a submicron crystalline structure to a nanocrystalline structure. An average silicon nanocrystalline size of 10 nm was obtained for film with x = 0.07 nitrogen content, annealed under a temperature of 850C during 2 h.

Nanocrystalline samples of Fe$\text{}_{80}$Mo$\text{}_{20}$ and Fe$\text{}_{50}$Mo$\text{}_{50}$ alloys were prepared by the mechanical milling method. The structure, lattice parameters, and crystallite size were determined by the X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of the milled products were determined by the M"ossbauer spectroscopy. It was observed that in the case of the Fe$\text{}_{80}$Mo$\text{}_{20}$ alloy a solid solution of Mo in Fe was formed with the lattice parameters of Fe increasing from 0.28659 nm to 0.29240 nm and the crystallite size decreasing from 250 nm to 20 nm. In the case of the Fe$\text{}_{50}$Mo$\text{}_{50}$ alloy there were no clear changes in values of the lattice parameters of Fe and Mo during the milling process, but the crystallite size decreased from 200 nm to 15 nm. Mössbauer spectra revealed different magnetic phases in the mechanosynthesized Fe-Mo samples. In the case of the Fe$\text{}_{80}$Mo$\text{}_{20}$ alloy, the spectrum for the milled mixture indicated the formation of a solid solution. In contrast, for the Fe$\text{}_{50}$Mo$\text{}_{50}$ the spectrum indicated the disappearance of the ferromagnetic phase.

Magnetic nanostructured materials have been found to be very efficient in wastewater decontamination. Among the various synthesis methods, co-precipitation is a rapid and cost-effective technique for the manufacturing of magnetic nanoparticles; moreover, using green chemistry for their stabilization with natural non-toxic capping agents in aqueous solution, such materials become potential candidates as nanocatalytic formulations for water remediation, topic which represents the aim of the present study. Thus, three types of environment-friendly magnetic fluids were synthesized using the chemical precipitation route, the resulted samples being further characterized by various analytical techniques, in order to assess their microstructural features. The results revealed excellent stability in suspension of all samples, the magnetite nanoparticles exhibiting sizes in the nanoscale range with a relatively spherical shape and suitable magnetic properties. Such nanoparticle based products could be the right choice for magnetic responsive and recyclable materials used in the degradation of emerging pollutants from wastewaters.

In this paper the structural and Mössbauer spectral properties of multiferroic ceramic $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ powders prepared by high-energy ball milling of polycrystalline precursor material (mixture of $Bi_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ powders) are presented. Mechanical synthesis was performed by high-energy vibratory mill. The X-ray diffraction methods were applied for the structure characterization of the studied samples. The parameters of diffraction line profiles were determined by PRO-FIT Toraya procedure. The crystallite sizes and lattice distortions were analyzed using the Williamson-Hall method. Investigations of hyperfine interactions in the studied materials were carried out by the Mössbauer spectroscopy. The powder morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques. It was found that during high-energy milling phase transitions, a decrease in crystallite size and amorphization process are observed.

Iron nanoparticles were prepared by selective leaching method. Initially the rapidly solidified AlFe11 alloy was prepared and consequently the aluminium matrix was dissolved from this alloy in 20% NaOH solution. This process was carried out at 0 and 80°C. At lower temperature, the iron nanoparticles covered by thin layer of Fe(OH)₃ were successfully obtained. The size of formed nanoparticles was about 8 nm and the particles exhibited massive agglomeration. It is not limitation of the process, because the application of nanoparticles is as a precursor for production of bulk nanocrystalline materials (metals, alloys and metal matrix composites). At higher temperature, the selective leaching process failed and iron was oxidized to different hydroxides. Aluminium containing waste liquid from selective leaching was used for production of powder Al₂O₃. Initial alloys and products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

Pure barium titanate $BaTiO_3 (BT)$ and BT doped with two different transition elements $Fe^{3+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ at 5 mol.% (BT5Fe and BT5Ni, respectively) as constant concentration in powder form have been prepared by sol-gel method using barium acetate, titanium(IV) n-butoxide, iron and nickel nitrates as precursor materials. The microstructure of BT and the influence of Fe and Ni dopants on it were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction shows that tetragonal phase is dominant for pure BT sintered for 4 h at 800°C. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to study surface morphology and particle size distribution for BT5Fe and BT5Ni, respectively. The presence of hydroxyl defects were verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for $(BaTi_{1-x}Fe_{x}O_{3-x/2}) (BT_xFe)$, where x=0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.07 and $(BaTi_{1-x}Ni_{x}O_{3-x/2}) (BT_xNi)$, where x=0.005, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.07.

Opis:
An electrochemically-gated junction field-effect transistor with metallic conducting indium tin oxide nanoparticle array as active layer is reported. Fabrication of a field-effect device with a degenerative semiconductor like indium tin oxide (carrier concentration $10^{20}-10^{21} cm^{-3}$) is possible by exploiting the high surface-to-volume ratio of nanoparticles and high surface charge density achievable by electrochemical gating. The on/off ratio obtained is 325 although the applied potential was restricted to the capacitive double layer region (to ensure high repeatability) without allowing redox reactions to take place at the interface.

Nanocrystalline materials were investigated by perturbedγγ-angular correlation using the radioactive probe $\text{}^{111}$In. For identifying local structures observed by perturbedγγ-angular correlation various supplementing experimental techniques, like X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy, were applied. In nanocrystalline TiAl alloys different crystallographic structures were observed depending on the conditions of sample treatment. Nanocrystalline Ni samples show a slightly modified local magnetic field in regions adjacent to the grain boundaries. In addition, ordered grain boundary structures were observed. Ni precipitates were identified in nanocrystalline NiCu alloys by perturbed γγ-angular correlation and preparation conditions avoiding these precipitates were found. For nanocrystalline ZnO preparation conditions were found yielding In-doped particles of good crystalline quality.

In this paper the microstructure and phase composition of ausferritic ductile iron alloy were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. In order to obtain the nanoausferritic microstructure in the alloy, the austempering heat treatment was performed at relatively low temperature. As a result, a specific kind of microstructure, containing nanocrystalline ausferrite and retained austenite blocks, was obtained in each heat-treated sample. The volume fractions of phases were determined using different methods: MicroMeter software for scanning electron micrographs, stereological analysis for transmission electron micrographs, quantitative analysis of the X-ray diffraction spectra and magnetometer measurements. All methods revealed a high amount of retained austenite which varied as a function of the austempering treatment parameters. It was shown that the quantitative phase composition measured by X-ray diffraction and magnetometer, in all samples investigated, differs significantly from the stereological measurements and image analysis performed through the MicroMeter software. The possible reasons of the observed differences were discussed.

The aim of the presented research was to investigate the influence of strontium dopant on the structure and composition of $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}CoO_3$ (x=0, 0.1, 0.2) perovskite thin films. Pure and Sr doped LaCoO₃ thin films were grown by pulsed electron deposition technique on crystalline epi-polished Si/MgO substrates. Numerous analytical techniques (scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction) were applied to characterize their phase/chemical composition, structure and surface morphology. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the presence of pure LaCoO₃ perovskite phase in the undoped thin film. For Sr doped thin films $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$ (x=0.2), $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}CoO_3$ (x=0.1) small contents of La₂ O₃ and LaSrCoO₄ phases were noticed. The crystallite sizes, calculated from the Williamson-Hall plots, were about 18 nm for all analyzed films. According to scanning electron microscopy/atomic force microscopy observations, obtained thin films were free from defects and cracks. Atomic force microscopy (tapping mode) analysis revealed the differences in the shape and quantity of surface crystallites for all thin films as a result of Sr doping and different deposition parameters. Atomic force microscopy technique also allowed measurement of roughness parameters for analyzed samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of chemical states of elements of thin films showed that their chemical state was stable across the film thickness and even at the interface with the MgO substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis also allowed to evaluate chemical states and atomic concentration of La, Co, and Sr elements within cross-sections of deposited thin films.

The mechanical performance of ultrafine-grained materials is strongly influenced by the lattice defect structure, i.e. the vacancy concentration, the type, arrangement and density of dislocations, the planar fault probability, as well as the amount and character of grain boundaries. In this paper, the correlation between the processing conditions, the lattice defect structure and the plastic behavior of ultrafine-grained materials is overviewed. For the processing route of severe plastic deformation, the influence of applied strain, hydrostatic pressure, as well as melting point, stacking fault energy and alloying on grain size, dislocation density and strength is studied. For nanopowder sintering techniques, the effect of atmosphere, temperature and time of consolidation on lattice defects and mechanical properties is discussed in detail.

The super hydrophobic materials have inspired a great deal of interest and research in recent years because of their unique water-repellent, self-cleaning properties, and their potential for practical applications. This study aims to create a super hydrophobic clay surface from aqueous dispersions of a long-chain hydrocarbon, Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB), and layered silicate via the solution intercalation method. First, to increase diffusing tendency of $CTA^{+}$ions from aqueous medium to the interlayer region of clay, long-chain hydrocarbon agent was dispersed in aqueous surfactant solution via hydrophobic interactions between the tails of $CTA^{+}$ ions and hydrocarbon chains. Then, the adsorption of the long tailed ions of CTAB on the surface of the clay layers was carried out. Effects of variables, such as temperature, initial surfactant concentration and hydrocarbon dosage onto the adsorbed amount of $CTA^{+}$ ions were investigated by considering the zeta potentials and contact angle values of organo-clay particles. The results show that by intercalation of the long tailed $CTA^{+}$ ions to the interlayer galleries of clay, high hydrophilic clay can be possible to convert to super hydrophobic clay. Also, the static contact angle values of organo-clay particles progressively increase with the increasing amount of hydrocarbon. The static contact angle value of powder organo-clay is about 150°, indicating its super hydrophobic character. XRD pattern and HRTEM images for the organo-clay confirm the intercalated structures.
